I'd say that a fair amount of those could very well be people who don't want to buy one part of a story until all three are available. Which, after everything that happened with the third DVD would be quite a silly idea, but there you go.

Actually, I personally am not 100% caught up with the comics myself. The reason for this is that since Amazon has been quite unreliable with the comics, and I personally don't trust SLG, I have to get the comics at the store. The nearest comic book shop that carries the comic is in Iowa City. That's a two hour round trip and with the price of gas, I end up spending more just going to the shop then I do for the comic itself. So for that reason, I only get the comic when I have other business in Iowa City. That's roughly every other month, so I should be caught up by August. But even then, I'm almost always an issue behind.

Well, I just paid for my registration to the 13th Gathering in Los Angeles. Kinda a big step, but I decided to put my money where my mouth is and make the commitment. I have a year to save for airfare and hotel... Do we even know the dates for the 2009 Gathering yet?

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" - Macbeth, "City of Stone"

MATT> You are remembering right.

Sigh.

And this is why we don't have the third DVD.

Greg Bishansky - [<---- The Twelfth Annual Gathering of the Gargoyles]
What would David Xanatos do? Well, he wouldn't sit at his computer bitching and moaning, that's for sure.

Demonskyre> Well, right before we started the Radio Play, Greg asked who among the audience had not read #7 and #8 and about a third of the audience raised their hands. I know my jaw dropped. Similarly, about a third of the attendees of Opening Ceremonies had known about the Hot Topic t-shirt and not purchased it.

On the other hand, it seemed that a third of the people at Opening Ceremonies were attending the Gathering for the first time, which was awesome.

Anyone else want to back me up or correct me here? Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly.

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" - Macbeth, "City of Stone"

Matt> Can I ask how you got the impression that a third of the Radio Play audience had not ready issues #7 and #8? I'm not doubting you; I'm just wondering what gave you that number and that impression. Also, about how many people were in the audience for the Radio Play? Everyone who wasn't in the cast or significantly fewer than that?

I agree that it is cause for concern that a lot of Gathering atendees seem unfamiliar with the comic. I'm sure they're all aware of its existence, so I'd be very interested to know why they aren't reading it. Mind you, I don't think we should should be wasting time ranting at people who have decided that they don't want to read the comic because they didn't like the story, because they didn't like the art, because they're happy with where the TV series left off, because they prefer a fanfic version of the rest of the story, because they don't like comics in general, or whatever (even if I do think that last reason is somewhat silly). Ig someone is a fan of "Gargoyles" but isn't into the comic, that's fine. I would just be interested to know if that's the case with anyone and why. I'd be more interested to know if there are people who aren't reading the comic for reasons that we could actually do something about, such as availability issues.

Dark Ages> I'm among those who are happy to hear that the next planned spin-off is "Dark Ages". I have no problem with any of the others, but "Dark Ages" has always been my first choice for which spin-off I would want to see made. (Weirdly enough, I think "Bad Guys" ties with "New Olympians" for last, which only means that they are the series I have the least amount of interest in out of a set of potential comics that are all highly interesting to me.) I've long been interested in knowing about the Wyvern Clan's life before the massacre. And I think this is one of the better series to do as a comic spin-off. The concept is easy to get, many of the characters will be recognizable from the comic, and most of the characters who aren't will probably be new to the new readers as well as the longtime fans. It's something I feel newer readers will have an easy time diving into. Though "Bad Guys" has grown on me, I still think it is pretty confusing for anyone who has limited or no familiarity with the show and expects to know what's jappening from having read the main comic, assuming they're even doing that.

Shameless Plug> Please consider checking out "The Middleman" on ABC Family. It is based on a comic written by one of the former writers of "Lost" (who is very involved in the series) and drawn by a very good friend of mine. It's fot a kind of Buffy/Men in Black vibe, if you had to describe it in terms of other properties. It's on Mondays nights, usually 8 PM Eastern, though it aired at 10 PM last week. It's fun and if you get into it I can explain some of the in-jokes to you.

Demonskrye

Dark Ages > I am very pleased to hear that Dark Ages will be the next spin-off. To be honest, Bad Guys and Pendragon are probably the spin-off ideas that interest me the least, and Dark Ages is one of the spin-off ideas that interests me the most, so I'm happy to hear that we'll be getting Dark Ages before Pendragon. Now let's just hope the license gets renewed!

Metropolis > Wow, that is great news. I've seen Metropolis before and I really enjoyed it. It will be great to see the footage that was lost.

"I'll pay for this! I mean, YOU'LL pay for this!" -The Sheriff of Rottingham

There is little point in worrying about all this. All we should be worrying about is supporting the property. Buy the comic, spread the word about the comic (and the t-shirt and the Gathering), buy extra issues of the comic if you can. Buy extra copies of the TPB and donate them to local libraries or leave them in public places like Starbucks.

Stop worrying about the future of the comic, worry about the present. No day but today. If we don't worry about the comic sales now, there will be no future for the comic. And the sales are totally up to us. SLG and Disney and Greg and the artists have to worry about deadlines, contracts, formats, etc. We can do nothing about that, so let them worry over those details. Our job is comic sales and advertising, so lets do the best job we can do.

Alright?

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" - Macbeth, "City of Stone"

I'd love for the comic to be monthly but the work would have to be much better compensated than it actually is to justify the extra time the artists (and Greg, for that matter) would need to take away from their dayjobs. SLG would also be out of pocket twice over funding the upcoming issues.

Kingdom may stump up more cash but would the bump in sales make up for the bump in costs?

Ed

Meg, I'm not sure if the reason Gargoyles was originally envisioned as a bi-monthly comic was due to the ability of an artist to keep up with a monthly schedule. Someone else here might know the reason Greg and/or SLG went that way.

Maybe it was so it'd be easier on fans' wallets ? Expecting them to shell out every other month instead of monthly ? Maybe it was because all the new Disney books were an untested property and six issues a year is more cautious than committing to twelve ? Maybe Greg forsaw the delays that might take place with Disney's approval process early on and decided a bimonthly schedule would give them enough room to still get the book out on time despite the dude at Disney taking his sweet time stamping an "Okay" on each issue ?

I have no idea, but someone else here probably does.

Although it might build more reader confidence and make/keep more current and new readers attatched to the series if it was coming out every month, given the track record so far...I really don't think there should be any announcements about them trying to go monthly. Keeping it unofficially bimonthly seems smart.

Kris - [plekopleko at hotmail dot com]

dph>"Greg Weisman may have a Dark Ages story that he wants to tell, but (I hope I'm wrong) I don't think it'll sell well."

Really? See, I tend to think that Dark Ages would be among the more popular spinoffs. Timedancer (Brooklyn) and Pendragon (Arthur) might be draws because of the individual characters involved, but I think that a spinoff with recognizable characters from the show such as Goliath, Hudson, Demona, Coldtrio, etc. would sell better than Bad Guys (who except diehards know who the main characters are?), 2198, or New Olympians.

Another pro to Kingdom taking over the Gargoyles comic might be that they would be able to afford a bigger name artist than SLG could.

Question: does anyone think SLG might take a chance on Gargoyles as a monthly, if an artist could be found that could keep to the timetable? It might influence more people to buy it if it has a regular monthly schedule....

Meg

Meg - <I, too, would love 12 and 6, but I don't know that BAD GUYS is selling well enough for SLG to take a chance on another spinoff. > It depends on if the cost of the license goes up if they do a spin-off. If the cost of the license is the same if they do one series or two series, then doing a spin-off won't hurt. Greg Weisman may have a Dark Ages story that he wants to tell, but (I hope I'm wrong) I don't think it'll sell well. I'd be happy with 6 and 6 (or just 6), but I would love to see 12 and 6. The only way I would be happy with the license going to Kingdom comics is if more money was spent on advertising.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happened to simplicity?

dph>I don't disagree that Gargoyles wouldn't fare well under Kingdom. Obviously, Disney won't be as focused on Gargoyles as SLG is, etc etc etc. I think if Gargoyles gets the axe at SLG, Kingdom would NOT pick it back up, it would be allowed to die. So we have to hope the SLG license gets approved. (Plus, I think SLG has looser S&P than Kingdom would.)

I, too, would love 12 and 6, but I don't know that BAD GUYS is selling well enough for SLG to take a chance on another spinoff. We might just be reduced to the main title after this. Plus, we'd have to find an artist for it in addition to an artist for the main title, since Charlebois said she can't feasibly do more comics. Maybe they'd bring Hedgecock in for the spinoffs, as he would have far more lead time, though I doubt that would happen. Maybe we'd get an artist who can put a book a month out, and and then he could alternate the spinoff and the main title....

Meg

I modified the pop-up blocker so that it wouldn't act on Station 8, and I still can't see the questions needing to be approved. So I don't think that's the problem. And I don't want to have to change browsers to something I'm less familiar with. I'm afraid that, until I learn what the problem is (and I don't want to do that much experimenting; I'm not computer-savvy enough to feel comfortable about that), someone else will have to approve the questions in the queue.
Todd Jensen

If one has no idea how a browser works, it doesn't matter which one one uses. The problem won't miraculously disappear just because Todd suddenly uses another browser (one he even knows less than his current one).

Or more likely, the problem will probably disappear, but just because the default settings of the two browsers are different, and there is a reason why pop ups are usually blocked.
Firefox just doesn't do it per default and needs a plugin for that (unless the user has the basic knowledge of Firefox and knows where to find the Javascript on/off option).

If Todd uses the Internet Explorer, there is an option, too, where one can turn off the pop up blocker, there even is an option which only allows specific pages to do pop ups (a feature Firefox needs a plug in for).

So, the IE option to manage the pop blocker is under Extras (if you can't find that menu holler) - Popupblocker -Popupblocker Options and in there add s8.org to the allowed sites, that should solve the problem. (The menu names might vary slight).

Btw, I use neither IE nor Firefox and think that no specific browser is the solution to a problem, rather the education of the user solves problems.

Todd: Here's an easy way to try a different web browser. Go to www.getfirefox.com and click on the 'Firefox 3 Free Download' button. The next page that loads will have instructions on how to install the program. Or just save it to the desktop and double-click on it there if that's what you're used to. After you install the program, another icon will appear on the desktop that will let you start 'Firefox', an alternative browser to the internet. It's like Internet Explorer--the blue E on your desktop--and works almost exactly the same way. Many people that are experienced with the internet use Firefox almost 100% of the time, but you don't have to worry about that. Just use it when going to Station Eight if you don't want to try to fix your first browser. It may be a little slower at first than what you're used to.

Todd : First off, I'm extremely sorry to hear about your computer problems. I'm hoping you get them resolved very soon.

However, for the interim period, you're quite right that we will need someone to "maintain the station" for a while. If no one more qualified steps up to the plate, I would be willing to take the reins temporarily. My e-mail address in below, in order to work out the details I'd need in order to make the transition as quick, painless, and unnoticeable as possible.

Spen - [spen at catlover dot com]

Meg - I'm not sure that I like the Kingdom comics alternative. Given Disney's lack of spending money on advertising for gargoyles, I'm not sure sales under Kingdom comics would fair any better. If anything, moving Gargoyles to Kingdom comics puts it more in danger of being canceled that with slg. A lower profit margin would mean more to Kingdom comics that to slg. I think spin-offs are a key part of the gargoyles comics. If Kingdom comics can do 12 issues of the main comic in color fairly profitable per year, then I see no problems with spin-offs being economic necessity. However, if Kingdom comics can do 6 issues of the main comic in color and 6 issues of a spin-off profitably, then I see no problems. However, like others, I just don't think a Dark Ages comic would sell as well as any other potential spin-off. If economically feasible, I'd like to see 12 issues of the main comic and 6 issues of a spin-off per year.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happened to simplicity?

On readership>Some people also just don't enjoy comic books. I have a friend who loved the show but doesn't want to read the comic because comic books as a medium just doesn't (don't?) work for her. Other people also may have fond memories of the show but are fine with their memories and the show being a valued part of their past. And yet others might have become so attached to their fanon version of what happened after the show ended that they'd rather not see/have little interest in the actual canon.

And honestly, with so much negativity surrounding the book in the first few months/issues, fans who loved the show (the source material) might not have wanted to invest in what was being portrayed as something very inferior, a pale imitation, something that would ruin their memories, etc.

But remember: the sales rank of the comic has been steady, though, even without hardcore Gathering fans buying (although think of where we might be if those people WOULD buy). The comic is probably in far more danger of being canceled because Disney wants to end all its licensed-out comics in favor of Kingdom than any other reason. And boy, was that bad timing for Gargoyles. Now the spinoffs, I have a bad feeling we're not seeing any more of those. But the main title is in no danger of being canceled due to low sales on SLG's side, at least (which you would think would be the side that matters).

I'm most excited for 'Pendragon', but all the spin-offs should be fun and I'm glad Greg's being led by his passions. If the time is right for him to tell that story, I'm sure it'll be fantastic. I suspect DA will be more commercial too, although Pendragon probably has a greater break-out appeal since Arthur has his own fanbase.

Matt: That's quite staggering. I hope it's not that people are trade-waiting. Or perhaps the habit of the cons is stronger than an active interest in ferreting out the new material.

Todd: Try Edit and Select All in case it's hidden? Which browser are you using at the moment?

Sorry for the double post, but I am going to need to resign from my post as the question-clearer for "Ask Greg". I recently had to switch computers, and something about my new computer's features keeps me from reading the questions when I click on the "approve questions" link. There's just a blank screen with "approve" and "delete" below it, and no visible words. So I'll have to step down in favor of somebody whose computer *does* allow him to read the submitted questions.

And sorry for printing it here, but I can't remember Gorebash's e-mail address.

Todd Jensen

MATT - That is troubling news. I wonder what the problem is. Fans not aware that the comic book exists, or unable to get it because they can't get to stores that have it?
Todd Jensen

I'm most excited to see Hyppolyta, Hudson's Mate and various other Wyvern Clan members that didn't survive to the 20th Century. Seeing Demona's Second would be awesome too. Anyway, whatever part of the Gargoyles tapestry Greg wants to show us, I'm sure it'll be enjoyable. The most important thing is making sure the books numbers stay strong.

Which I'm very concerned about. It seemed like about a third of the people who attended the Radio Play this year hadn't read Issues 7 and 8 yet! This was shocking to me. If a chunk of the hardcore fans have not picked up the comic, we are in trouble.

You should still think about the current restorated version. The material currently found is apparently in a real bad state and in a lower resolution, meaning the picture quality will probably suffer quite a bit.
I have the current special edition and it's really a great movie, the missing scenes have their story inserted as text, while the music that would be playing during them runs, and since Metropolis uses text inserts to tell its story, it doesn't feel that jarring.

Though I'll also get the complete version once it's available.

As for the Gargoyle spin off, I don't have a preference, as long as the main series continues, the story is great and the graphics bearable.

Glad to hear "Dark Ages" is intended to be next. I would like to see some of the backstory of Castle Wyvern and the clan prior to the start of the main series.

Hmm, favorite medieval movies and series. Surprisingly, not a lot. Gummi Bears, Flight of Dragons, Monty Python's Holy Grail, A Knight's Tale (even with the throwing of historical accuracy to the wind), Dragonheart, Quest for Camelot to a degree. Not that much that's stood out and stood up well.

I'm glad Greg's decided to tell a "Dark Ages" tale for the next spin-off (should it happen). More interested in that than "Pendragon" at the moment.

While I'd almost prefer to just pick up the probable trade paperback collection for the Gargoyle spin-offs, I can't help feeling the need to support the comic by buying the monthly issues. I guess I can always buy the trades later and try to sell the single issues (or give them away, depending on finances).

And thanks Matt for mentioning that. The sort of news I'd been waiting for.

I've thought about seeing the Director's Cut of "Kingdom of Heaven," which a friend told me was a lot better than the theatrical release. I jsut read an article that over ONE HOUR of footage thought lost from Fritz Lang's 1927 masterpiece METROPLIS was found in Argentina. It appears to be a COMPLETE cut of the film, at 3½ hours.

I can't wait for when they restore it and make it available on DVD/blue ray. I have been waiting to see this film for ages but always held off in the vain hope that the lost footage would be found. I was right! I may have to wait a little longer, but it will be worth the wait.

Speaking of middle ages stuff, I don't think anyone has mentioned a huge (IMHO) announcement that Greg mentioned at the Gathering. After Bad Guys #6, if the contract for the spin-off miniseries' is renewed Greg will be doing a Dark Ages story instead of Pendragon. He says he has this story that is just dying to be told and wants to tell it ASAP. It won't be the "pilot" for Dark Ages, but apparently it'll span much of the length of time between 971 and the Massacre in 994. After that he'll do Pendragon and then Timedancer.

This and other Gathering tidbits coming soon in Matt's Gathering Journal... which I hope to get to this weekend.

It's been said that out of some of the planned Gargoyles spinoffs that Dark Ages may not have the same appeal as others due to being in the medieval times rather than the present (or the mid 1990s-2000).

That said, when you were growing up, which favorite shows/movies or any entertainment in general did you enjoy that were set in the medieval times?

I enjoyed The Sword In The Stone, Gummi Bears, The Princess Bride and the Dragon Warrior (known also as Dragon Quest) games.

I know this is a bit late, but I haven't really had time to fully read the room until now, and I wanted to say something about Jonny Modlin.

Battle Beast : "Hey every... I think mr. Modlin has either ADD or another mental illness.." Speaking as someone who has ADD, I think I can say with some surety that Jonny does not have ADD. My reasoning for this is quite simple: Jonny appears to have a one-track mind. A person with ADD usually has an eighty-three track mind, and a train that leaps from one track to another without warning and for no conceivable reason. Besides that, there's the matter of Jonny's persistence. Most people with ADD would not be able to keep up this sort of prolonged trolling. Someone with ADD would troll along the same lines as Kevin Conner: post fourty times in two weeks and then lose interest and never come back again.

Of course, this is all coming from the mouth of a failed psychology major, so take it with a boulder of salt.

Con report will come probably tonight.

Regarding the speculation on who would next pick up the main book... The reason I'm not even offering to take it is that I can't afford to. The wage is... well, let's just say I'd need to be able to finish a page in a maximum of two hours to compete with the salary I'm getting in the "day job", and a maximum of 3 hours to make enough money to live on it. A page takes anything between 5 and 10 hours to do (and sometimes more in the case of heavy BGs), from initial sketch to finished inks and tones. I simply can't afford to have this as my day job. I would LOVE to do this, to only draw Gargoyles, but the kids and mortgage come first.

That said, if I found another job that took me less time and paid the equivalent (or a better) salary that would allow me to draw Gargoyles without burning out, I'd be there in a heartbeat. This is why I'm keeping an ear out for any news in the realms of storyboards and comics. I'll be at SDCC -- wouldn't it be awesome if I were able to charm a publisher into hiring me so that I'd be able to do only comics and live from them?

I'm learning a bunch of shortcuts when it comes to working on comics, and I end up saving more time as I advance in pages, but it's still very time-consuming. Oh well, all I can do is get my name out there and find the job that will allow me to draw what I love and not starve.

Meg > Ah...well in that case, probably not. I wasn't very familiar with what Chris Jones was up to, so I didn't know he was that busy. It's not surprising though...a guy with his talent would almost certainly be very busy.

Given that Hedgecock is leaving, and Charlebois, Jones, and Guler are all probably too busy...that leaves Nir Paniry or Gordon Purcell, or another artist who we aren't familiar with yet. I'm betting it's going to be a new artist.

Rebel
GOLIATH: I SHOULD SAY SOMETHING SHAKESPEAREAN NOW.

@Merlin Missy- Great Con report. I think the best place to post it would be to Ask Greg.
Spoonvonstup - [<-- Gargoyles Music Video Database]

Do you think we could actually get Chris Jones as a regular on pencils, though? From browsing his online site he seems to be a) very busy and b) very involved with DC. Given all that, I don't know if SLG could realistically snag him for Gargoyles full-time. On a fill-in basis, sure, but ongoing would seem to be tough.

If Gargoyles stays with SLG, I think it's more likely we get another Hedgecock-type, someone who isn't established in the business yet and who wants to cut their teeth on Gargoyles. Which doesn't have to be a bad thing; Hedgecock certainly improved and I think he was the best penciller on staff, so to speak, by the end of his run.

Meg

The correct spelling of the name is Greg Guler, with an "e".
Patrick - [<-- The Gathering 2009]
"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men." - Willy Wonka

I lied. If it were up to me, Greg Gular would be the main artist. Period. Of course that's not gonna happen, he's too busy with his own stuff (I think Greg said Gular was working on Phineas and Ferb) to do it all the time...but still *Sigh*.

Rebel> You're right of course...it doesn't matter who designs Katana. It matters who's going to be drawing her full-time in the long run. (Assuming we are renewed.)

Chip - [Dragonhunter723 at yahoo dot com]
"Whenever you find a man who says he doesn't believe in a real Right and Wrong, You will find the same man going back on this a moment later."--C.S. Lewis

Well...assuming the license gets renewed, or the comics continue through Kingdom Comics or some other way, I would like for whoever is going to be the official ongoing artist do both 11 and 12. I think this is important because whoever will be the main artist for the comics should get the privilege of designing Katana, Nashville, and Fu-Dog...since he/she will be the one who will have to draw them the most in upcoming issues. For all we know, the new artist could be someone who we haven't even seen yet.

If the license doesn't get renewed (or if Greg and co. don't know if it will be renewed by the time it is time to choose artists for 11 and 12) then I'd be fine with having two different artists do 11 and 12. Jones and Charlebois would be fine with me...I like the art of both of these artists.

Rebel
GOLIATH: I SHOULD SAY SOMETHING SHAKESPEAREAN NOW.

Crzydemona> Coolio. Thanks.

Rebel> Chris Jones was actually going to be my guess, he's experienced and probably isn't bogged down by the time constraints of Karine or David. I actually like Karine's art better than his though, I hope that she can do at least one issue. I know that we're all looking forward to seeing Katana, and the question in my mind is: who gets to design her? If she appears in 10 (which I kinda doubt) then we get a Katana designed by Gular...which would be SWEET!

If it were up to me...(and, of course it's not)...I'd have Chris Jones do #11, and Karine do #12. What do you guys think?

King Cobra>I wouldn't be surprised/disappointed if Charlebois took over the title, no. But her release schedule with BAD GUYS hasn't exactly been the model of consistency, either--there were what, six months between 1 and 2 and a fill-in for 3? Which is totally fine--I'm not hating on Charlebois, I enjoy her art and from what others in here have said she's super busy with other jobs (and I'm sure Gargoyles doesn't pay enough for her to quit her other jobs in favor of a title that we're still not sure will continue past #12), but if they gave Hedgecock the ax because he couldn't get stuff out on time, we're really going to need an artist who can get things out like clockwork.

Gathering> It sounds like a great time was had by all. Congrats to the winners of the video contest, masquerade, and auctions, the radio play cast, the authors and artists in this years anthology, and anyone else who deserves congratluations.

Speaking of the anthology, are copies still available? I'm curious to read what people wrote, plus I believe I have a credit in there for helping out with some Latin translation for KingCobr's sumission.

Hedgecock Departing> Like a lot of people, I have mixed feelings. Hedgecock's work was improving and he clearly did care about the material. I think he still had room to improve and remained somewhat inconsistant from panel to panel, but I can't deny that he got better over the course of the series. However, regardless of my feelings about Hedgecock's art, he was having chronic deadline issues on a book that is suffering from an inconsistant release schedule already. We've already got Disney taking their time in approving the book and the art taking longer than it should to be finished just adds to the problem. But I don't want to end things on a bad note and Hedgecock is always going to have a place in "Gargoyles" for designing some of the first and most exciting new characters to come out of the fiction.

Unfortunately, I doubt Guler has the time to pencil the whole #10-#12 arc, awesome as that would be.

Jonny Modlin> This will be the last thing I say on the subject and I'm going to talk about him rather than to him, since I've only once seen him do anything close to responding directly to what another person said and I'm still not entirely convinced that he's not a bot.

Since this guy popped up again, I've done a little quick googling, which turned up very similar repeated questions regarding other shows coming out on DVD. That didn't surprise me. But what was notable was what I didn't find. I didn't find much of anything else. Certainly nothing to indicate that this person had a life outside of asking about DVD releases. But also no conversation about any of the cartoons beyond asking about the DVDs. No discussions of which episodes are good or bad and why, no guesses about what might come next in an ongoing story, not even so much as an indication of a favorite character. Which has led me to a conclusion (one that does assume that Jonny is an actual person, which I'm not completely convinced of). Jonny's not a fan; he's a collector. He's someone who just likes to habe lots and lots of DVDs for whatever reason. Maybe he watches them all a bunch of times, maybe he never even watches most of them once. But he just likes having that big library and complete sets of DVDs. And that's fine. It doesn't excuse his annoying behvior, but there's nothing wrong with just wanting to have a lot of DVDs. I know I probably own more than I should and have a few that I have't got around to watching. It's just a different way of looking at the object, as a collectable or status symbol rather than a copy of a favorite show.

Anyways, that's the conclusion I've come to, and the end of my saying anything to or about Jonny.

Demonskrye

Yeah, I was kinda upset to hear Greg say #9 would be Hedgecock's last. I've always liked the art and as others have noted, he has only improved. That being said, getting there comics out in a timely fashion isn't just nicer for us, it's important to the future of the series, so if Hedgecock can't make the book work in his schedule then I'm glad we are moving on to someone who (hopefully) can. We'll have to wait and see who that is...
Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" - Macbeth, "City of Stone"

I never had a strong enough opinion of Hedgecock's art, whether positive or negative, to comment on it. But I do think that it was a good idea to replace him, if he was having such a trouble meeting deadlines. The irregular schedule certainly couldn't have done the comic much good (especially in light of the occasional remarks I've seen quoted here from people who said that they didn't want to buy any comics from a company that couldn't bring them out on time). I hope that the new regular artist will not only be good, but also do a better job of meeting deadlines.

I might add that I always felt slightly uneasy about Hedgecock after reading his bio in the first issue of "Gargoyles"; its tone was too flippant for my liking.

Hi everyone this is my first post and it's about my first Gathering, which was AWESOME!

To all the people I met, it was great talking with other fans of the show and finding out some answers of rumors I've wondered about, such as Hudson and Broadway being related.

The only down side was having to leave after the masquerade and driving more than seven hours (blecch) and then going to work on Monday (yecch) on very little sleep (hand me the Kaos energy juice please).

Anyway, the Gathering was fantastic and it was great being part of the radio play and the masquerade. By the way can anyone send me a picture of me in my costume? I was the tourist gargoyle and I forgot to get a photo.

It's to bad to hear Hedgecock's leaving. I admit I was hard on him this time two years ago, but he's improved since and you've got to give him some credit for putting a lot of work into the comic. And as said, he gave us the designs for a lot of the new cast of characters which is not a bad thing to leave behind.
Asatira

Not to mention Pog, Lunette, Merlin, <WITHHELD>, <WITHHELD>, <WITHHELD>, and <WITHHELD>. And as Lumpmoose said: Shari, Staghart, and Coco. Not a bad legacy at all. Those are some pretty darn important--and cool--characters.

Man, wouldn't it be something if we got Greg Guler for the whole 10-12 arc? Man, that'd be sweet.

I have mixed feelings about Hedgecock leaving. On the one hand, he was very devoted to Gargoyles and I appreciated that dedication...I remember reading a long time ago that he actually left his job to give more time to Gargoyles. That really impressed me, and I kinda liked having such a devoted Gargoyles fan as an artist for the comics. But on the other hand, I was never very fond of his art...it's not that he wasn't talented (which was made even more evident by his improvements in #7 and #8), I guess I just never really liked his style very much, and I was never very confident that it was a good fit for Gargoyles. Despite this, I'm still a little sad to hear that he's not going to be the artist anymore, simply because I know he probably really cared about Gargoyles.

I hope we'll see more stuff in the future from people like Chris Jones, Greg Guler, and Charlebois. And I wouldn't mind Paniry popping in to do a few issues now and again. His style was very unexpected, but refreshing.

"I guess that online quiz was right when it said I was hedonistic." -Me, writing in my con journal after I had taken photos of the aftermath of the tornado.

Kris> Yep, that's my sister again (Phoenix-Talon). Elisa two years in a row. I was Officer Morgan Morgan in last year's play...so...I had a date with my sister...um...glad that didn't work out.

That reminds me: Greg said at the Gathering, during the comic panal, that issue #9 is David Hedgecock's last issue, as he has been unable to keep up with the deadlines. I think that that's a shame, as his artwork was really growing on me. Karine said that she "let out a fangirl 'squee'" upon seeing the stuff that Gular has done for issue #10. So all in all, the upcoming issues are a mixed bag. We lose Hedgcock, but we get at least on issue done by Gular.

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" - Macbeth, "City of Stone"

A minor spoiler was also leaked after last year's Radio Play. The name Quincy Hemings was only revealed in #5 and someone mentioned it in their Gathering journal. Greg didn't punish us for that. Lets just not talk anymore about the cup.

And anyway, I still think "The Green" is a great episode, though I don't think it'd be one of the better Radio Plays

Pre-registration page should be fixed now. Might need to do a refresh in your browser to see it. I'd had two sets of numbers transposed. Mistakes can happen when you're working on ZOMG number of things at one time in the days leading up to a con. ;)

Well, now we know with some certainty that the Stone of Destiny, and possibly also the mystery cup in question (I'm guessing the holy grail?), have speaking parts in #9.

"if silent this time" in #7 and #8...? Eh? Can't wait to see the radio play and find out who played them!

"The story is told... though who can say if it be true... "

Liking that cover for The Gathering 2009 page. It marries something I love (Gargs) with something I often like and find cool depending on the incarnation and writer (Spider-Man), and something I like for its kitchy appeal (Marilyn Munroe and especially that dress and pose). My favorite's still the James Dean-esque one (or was it modeled after Grease?) with the teenage gargs on a bike. The Spectacular Spider-Man dude is very cool for participating.

Spoonvonstup >> Thanks for the 2007 Radio Play links. Watched 'em all while having the comic in hand. Fun!

Lotta folks did well with it, but that one dude doing the Canmore boys and Thailog and possibly others was awesome (Emambu--I'll get it right by watching the credits). The girl playing Elisa (Phoenix-Talon), while not a soundalike, had the speech patterns/beat of Elisa's voice down perfect. Bronx's gargbeast sounds were perfect and amusing (Bridgette/Idgiebay), and I thought Brentwood sounded scarily spot-on and hadn't heard Thom Adcox's name called during the roll call, so was surprised to see it in the credits. Also see that Gorebash (Martin Hacker), Greg B (Broadway), and King Cobra (Malibu) were in there, very cool.

It was gracious of Thom to let someone else tackle Lexington.

Be fun to hear more after #9 comes out.

Looking back over those three issues of the comic also had me reflecting on the artists we've seen work on the series so far (I haven't seen the guy who filled in for Bad Guys yet, not until I get #3).

David Hedgecock has become more of a fit for the book since he started and has improved quite a bit. Although I remember #3 being my favorite of his earliest issues. It feels like the show, just styled in his own way.

Nir Paniry is still my favorite Gargoyles comic book artist aside from Greg Guler. Visually, #4 is my favorite issue. Probably the biggest departure from the look of the series over all the other aritsts, but I love it. I remember some complaining about the male gargs and mutates looking too jacked, but I dunno, I think it works for 'em.

Karine Charlebois did fine with #5, but I think her stuff in Bad Guys is phenominally better. She's second JUST under Paniry in terms of how well-suited she is to her title.

I probably missed a cover artist or two--didn't Randy Green do one of the covers, like for issue #2 or something ?

CRZYDEMONA - I hope you didn't leak anything you shouldn't have when you mentioned a rock and a cup in the radio play. Well, the rock was probably safe to mention, since the Stone of Destiny played such an important role in #7 and #8, if silent this time - but since I don't recall any cups in #7 and #8 - I hope you didn't give anything away about #9's contents.

I SURVIVED GATHERING 2008!

Despite all the crazy things that go on while planning things, this was easily the smoothest running convention we've ever had. SUPER CONGRATULATIONS to the Con-Chair, Susan Leonard, for putting on such an amazing show. No way I'm letting her escape now, I've already talked her into joining the 2009 staff as our Guest Coordinator. :)

Christine> The Anthology looked GREAT! I can't wait to settle down for a few minutes and read through it!

RADIO PLAY> While the story didn't really work as well in chronological order, I still enjoy it. The weather thing was a bit creepy though. ;) The only thing I have to say about the story was that I never expected us all to be upstaged by a rock and a cup! :P

I had a GREAT time casting it with the gang. It just reminds me more that Casting is something I'm passionate about and need to look into on a more professional level.

Spectacular Spider-man DVD> Damn it! They changed the cover a little and took some of the fun out of it! It was set up a little bit more like a comic book cover (it was darker too... you know... NIGHT of the Lizard and all), but eh... I think they took some of the dynamics out of it because of it. blah.

Gorebash> Found it then lost it?? WTF? Next time just try to get on the plane naked and blame them for losing your luggage that they have to let you on like that. :)

PurpleGoldfish> We had a documentary crew film the radio play, BUT... we are all sword to secrecy again like last year. Once issue #9 is out we will post it somewhere. Keep you updated! :)

Chip> Way to cut me out of the Casting line up! :P

MacbethFan/Chip> I don't know the detailed catagories, but my daughter won "Best Overall Video" with this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTPl3CHgQs4 I know Spoonvonstup won some stuff too.

GATHERING OF THE GARGOYLES 2009! We are going to be in Los Angeles again. Please click on my name below if you want to register at the Early Bird prices. We are going to have a TON of guests and lots of fun! (and yes... the artwork on that front page was done by Spectacular Spider-man's Lead Character Designer, Sean "Cheeks" Galloway... yay!)

Just walked in the door a few minutes ago. Had a great time the Gathering again this year, but I was expecting that, since I had a great time last year. My complements to all the con staff.

It was nice to be able to hang out with a few people more than I was able to last year. It was also nice meeting some other people in person. Unabridged con journal will be going up in the LJ as soon as I have a chance to decompress, likewise with pictures, once I've sifted through the crap and gotten the red out. The censored version will be posted to ASK GREG once I figure out some "clean" expletives. For now, though, I need to seek sustenance.

Christine: Haven't had a chance yet to really sit down and read the Anthology proper, but I do like the art Kythera did for the cover a lot.

Lumpmoose> The main thing is to keep it away from direct sunlight, as that tends to cause the linework to deteriorate. If you do go with Van Eaton Galleries, you can ask them for more info about proper cel care. They're always really nice when I call them and I'm sure they'd be happy to answer your questions. They'll also frame the cel for you if you want, so you don't have to worry about figueing out what sort of matt and glass and so on is best for it.

Gorebash> Ugh, what a nightmare. I hope this gets sorted out soon. Sending luggage retrieval vibes your way.

I thought that the Anthology was fantastic! I am a little biased, though--cuz I've got a story in it. I thought that all of the stories in said Anthology were pretty darn good, and I got to see some of my favorite fanfic authors contribute. And the art was cool too. I was pleasantly surprised by my brother's "Star of Arabia" at the bottom of every story.

Demonskrye: Thanks for the heads-up! I've been looking for a good Gargoyles production cel. I've never owned a cel before. Are there any special care guidelines?

I'm thinking of getting Greg to sign it at CONvergence. Does the plastic fold up off the background? Then he could use a metallic marker on a spot on the background not covered by the characters or a Sharpie on the plastic itself, I suppose. Is that a massive faux pas for a collector's piece like that? I don't plan to resell it but I also don't want it to be "ruined" by any sense of the word since it is a piece of art.

FYI: There's a live auction going on right now with scads of Gargoyles cels: http://search.liveauctions.ebay.com/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&ccn=Collectibles+%26+Memorabilia&sacti=24784&sacat=0&lc=1&ahid=3227&isl=0&fis=1&satitle=gargoyles&fgtp=

They all have that annoying frilly border but seem to be legit (but who knows, it's eBay). The lots are moving slowly, so it may be a few hours before more come up.

Yes, Happy Canada Day to our Canadian commenters!

Since we can't all win a nice Gargoyles cel at the Gathering auction like Gore, I thought I would point out that there's a Gargoyles cel for sale over at Van Eaton Galleries. It's got Goliath and Hudson in the midground standing next to each other facing forward while Lex lands in the foreground, as seen from the back. If I had to guess, I'd say it might be from "Thrill of the Hunt." The pose on Lex is a little awkward, but I personally kind of like that in a cel because it makes it clear that it's a real production cel and not a sericel. The price isn't too bad as cels go. I've already got a Gargoyles cel of my own, so if you're in the market, feel free to take a look.

How did the music video contest go at the con?
MacBethFan

Yes, I did do an English accent, I did all kinds of weird accents in High School plays, and I know I'm good at them. Clearly I impressed the casting judges (Keith, Thom, Greg, Josh, and Karine) though in the Audition, Keith told me to slow down.

As for the changes in the readings of 7&8, it was just the inflection, Keith and Thom were both voicing Lex/Thailog/Goliath in my head, but they put different emphasis on different words and interpretations than I had, so that changed my perception of the comic.

Keith loves voice acting, and clearly loved doing the play...once he was up to speed on what had happened so far, he gave 700% to his preformance of Goliath. He was good, and very professional.

Thom played Lex exactly how I've been interpreting it. Like a guy who has a crush on Staghart, but doesn't realize that he has a crush, because he's not yet aware of his orientation. Thom knows Lex through and through, and I think that Thom has been reading the comics...though I can't say that with certainty. His "I'll call you Amp" got a reaction from everyone in the room. What that reaction was...I let you find out when it comes up on Youtube.

Chip - [Dragonhunter723 at yahoo dot com]

Chip, thanks for the reports. I have questions!

"I got to play Griff in the Radio Play, which was awesome as he's my favorite character."

Did you put on the voice/accent, and if so, how do you think you did ? Did you get any feedback ? Just curious.

"Keith David played Goliath and Thailog"

If the recording of the radio play gets put out (I'd love to see/listen to any previous ones done for the comics, if anyone has a link), it's almost like you can have a partial vocal track to go with the comic. Which is...something I've always hoped one of my favorite comic book continuations of a TV show would do. Like for Buffy, Firefly/Serenity, or Gargoyles, if they stuck a CD in there with most if not all of the actors back as a surprise to the fans or even if they marketed the heck out of it and charged more for a separate special edition of the comic...I'd be all over that.

Does Keith David seem to enjoy doing the radio plays ?

"and Thom played Lexington, which changed the way I read 7 & 8."

What, specifically, did his voice work change from how you originally interpreted the dialogue for those issues ? Important context, or just the way you heard Lex's voice, despite the likelihood that we're all imagining Thom's Lex voice any time his character speaks in the comics.

And okay, I'll admit, I'm curious how he read the parts referring to Amp, heh.

"Keith hadn't been reading the comics, so during rehersal Greg had to explain to him what had happened in #'s 3-6. My sister played Elisa, and managed to get embarrassed working with Keith's Goliath. :)"

Hah, that's cute. Man, who wouldn't. Guy's voice is hot.

Jonny Modlin> No, Greg made no such announcement. In fact, I believe he has already squelched such rumors http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/latest.php?rid=772. I think that if that had happened, I would have gotten online AT the Gathering and would have told EVERYONE!

Shara> As to the other things at the Gathering, I've already given the rundown on the current situation with the comic...we had fun, got to scope out the Art for BG#4 ahead of time. The Radio Play was issues 7,8, & 9 told in Chronological order (Which incedently was not the way it should have been told: the comic version is better...not that it sucks; but once you read 9 you'll see why it was told this way) I got to play Griff in the Radio Play, which was awesome as he's my favorite character. Keith David played Goliath and Thailog, and Thom played Lexington, which changed the way I read 7 & 8. Keith hadn't been reading the comics, so during rehersal Greg had to explain to him what had happened in #'s 3-6. My sister played Elisa, and managed to get embarrassed working with Keith's Goliath. :)

The Masquerade was awesome, I slapped together an Archmage+ outfit at the last second and got Third Place in the Canon Characters category. Karine Charlebois, who was one of the Judges, had this totally wicked Robyn Canmore/Hunter outfit, which I think should have been Best in Show, but of course she was a judge, and not actually in the contest. I had to leave right after the Masque, so I missed the closing ceremonies. (I don't think anything major happened.)

There were other little things that delighted me, which you'll read about in my con-journal, but those were the major impressions from my POV...oh wait, I had a story in the Items of Enchantment Anthology, which was pretty sweet, and I am extremely proud of said story: Aswan. Even if some people (we won't name names) didn't like it.

**Ask Greg related**

Jonny Modlin writes...

Hi Greg,
Did you announce the DVD release of Gargoyles Season 2, Volume 2 at The Gathering of the Gargoyles 2008 during opening ceremonies? Thank you.
**End Ask Greg related**

Johnny Modlin - Just how ignorant are you? If, during the gathering, Greg Weisman had anything new to say about any new gargoyles dvds coming out, how likely do honestly think it is that nobody would have mentioned it so far?

Back from the con. Lost my luggage. Have yet to get it back. I'll start playing phone tag with the airline tomorrow.

Won a 2-layer cel from Eye of the Beholder that was raffled off!

I'll post a con journal to ask greg later this week.

IF YOU ATTENDED THE GATHERING, PLEASE POST YOUR CON JOURNALS TO ASK GREG. You can post it one day at a time or all at once. That's up to you.

DPH> Sorry, but sometime no news is simply that: no news. There is simply no no news as to whether or not the comic has been renewed. Greg said that he was hoping to find out by the con, but at last check, the ball was still in Disney's Park so to speak.

Dan Vado is trying to get the comic license renewed at the same price as last time, but with Disney starting up their own comic company (Kingdom Comics) the folks at disney are debating whether or not they want to keep licensing their properties to other companies...and if they do, do they want to keep doing it at the same price. If they jack up the price of the Gargoyles License, then SLG will have to drop it though. Greg is still hopefully optimistic though. The odds are good that SLG will be allowed to renew, and if not...then we'll finish our (very good) run of 12 issues, and 6 Bad Guys, and set to work on trying to convince Kingdom Comics to put out Gargoyles. It's not all bad, though it's not great either. Just be hopefull, and if you're religious: Pray. That's all we can do for now. If you'll excuse me, I need to go work in my con-journal.

Wingless - The only reason I got my 2006 con journal out relatively quickly at first is I made a point to keep a journal as I went along, writing down what happened as I stopped to take the time to write. Of course, sometimes events get a blurry so I wouldn't put a rush out on seeing con-journals just yet. What surprises me is the lack of news. The saying "No news is good news" does not seem to apply here yet because the 'news' I was looking forward to hearing is Disney approved the license renewal.

Spoonvonstup> A lengthy con journal takes time, certainly. But right now, I wouldn't mind just a quick rundown of some of the highlights and any interesting info revealed (that has been deemed OK to share).

Algernon> I would't be surprised since the YouTube video of last years radio play was an officially snactioned Gathering deal. However, since it contains material from the comic that has yet to be released, I assume that it will be like last year's video and not go up until after the comic comes out.

Demonskrye: - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

Well, I guess if we're being practical about it, it does take quite a bit of time to put together a Con journal (at least any kind of entry that would be worth writing and reading).

I agree. It definitely works SO much better in the non-linear format.

DPH> Stop trying to use math to figure out how long it will take to draw the comic. Nor the approval process. This is all done by human beings... not machines. People are NOT computers.

Posting from Chicago.

The Radio Play was, well... awesome. That being said, this story in the linear format didn't work. I think everyone here now gets why Greg told the story the way he did.

What would David Xanatos do? Well, he wouldn't sit at his computer bitching and moaning, that's for sure.

"Come along. You belong. Feel the fizz."

Patrick's post last night indicated that the radio play was the Stone of Destiny story from the comics. Since someone else here raised the question: how did the script handle the non-linear aspects of that story (jumping around to different times - not just in the present, but all the way back to Macbeth helping to steal the Stone of Destiny in 1950, and King Arthur and Macbeth's coronations before that)?

Came by because I was catching up on posts from last week (after getting back from camping in Quebec, a couple hours outside Montreal) and saw someone on Television Without Pity's boards mention that Amazon put a placeholder up for Season 2 Part 2 and "Season 3". Liked Greg's response to that (I keep forgetting to check out Hill Street Blues. So many TV shows, even some quality ones still that I haven't checked out on DVD yet).

Looking forward to any trace of news from The Gathering.

My comic shop never got in my copy of Bad Guys #3. I dunno if the issue sold out (which would be awesome for the comic) or if Diamond just messed up and didn't ship it. I know I pre-ordered it. It's been over a month and a half, so I guess I'll order it online soon (either from Slave Labor or Amazon, I'm not sure yet--which would benefit the comic more?). Would like to have it before Bad Guys #4 comes out.

Do you guys know what's up with Bad Guys #5 and 6 being available for pre-order at the same time last month ? What's the deal with that ? I don't see any info about it in Greg's rants. Are we getting two issues in one month, or is Slave Labor just making sure it keeps all its readers on board/committed until the end of the mini-series ?

Issue #4 was finished last week; I'm currently halfway into #5's roughs, and I've got just about a quarter inked. Just so you know.

Guess what Friday was, besides the opening day of the Gathering? 6 weeks since issue #4 was sent to Disney.

If you believe it will take 8 weeks/2 months for issue #4 to be approved, that gives issue #4 a release date of July 23rd or July 30th. If you're an optimist and think that issue #4 has been approved after 6 weeks, that gives issue #4 a release date of July 9th or July 16th. If you're a pessimist and think issue #4 will take more than 8 weeks to get approved, then you can believe issue #4 won't be released in July. Either way, I can consider highly probable that issue #4 will come out in July.
