VoLpE> There are questions that get asked repeatedly, and I'm inclined to be patient about those.

My patience runs thin not because someone asks a question that has been repeatedly asked before, not because someone asks the same question repeatedly, but when someone appears to be asking the exact same question -the exact same poorly written question, I might add - repeatedly, doesn't really listen to people's responses, and never contributes anything else to the discussion.

Demonskrye - [<---Music Videos at The Ink and Pixel Club]

Regardless of whether or not a question is repeatedly asked or not, I don't think it's fair to assume that any fan, no matter how fresh or old, knows the answers to everything. If someone asks something simple, then just answer it simply. Then if they're interested in checking it out, just point them towards the 'Ask Greg' section and let them know that it's the nucleus of FAQs. I don't think think there's a need to get cynical or nasty, esp. in a place that's supposed to be a haven for Gargoyles fans to interact and find socialization.

Just thought I'd say that.

I think I heard Greg's voice in Episode 1 when he played the crowd person who said, "Well, that doesn't make any sense." in regards to Speedy and Kid Flash.

Just caught "Welcome to Happy Harbor" . . . not going to do a full review, but here are a few bullet points:
Opening credits/theme! Hopefully this while satisfy all those AskGreg-questioners who've been bugging about this since "Independence Day" aired.

Kid Flash wondering how wrong it is that he finds himself hot. d:

Superboy ripping off a ruined shirt to reveal a new black shirt underneath. Having Read YJ #0, this was only that much more funnier XD

The Team constantly underestimating each other's ability to hear (or mind-read). Kid Flash reminds the group that Superboy has super hearing and even Red Tornado reminds the group that he isn't an oblivious bucket of bolts

Speaking of Red Tornado, I had a small hunch that Greg Weisman would cameo as his voice (since its been mentioned that he's one of Greg's favorite DC characters, and even was temporarily given the chance to write that RT miniseries before it was canceled), but while the voice actor sounds familiar (it's good ol' Jeff Bennett, isn't it?), I'm doubt it's Greg pulling a Donald Menken ;)

Again, fun stuff :D

"An explanation of cause is not a justification by reason." C. S. Lewis

"Happy New Year everyone!"

I believe there should be a comma between "Year" and "everyone."

"I have bought the DVD's"

Apostrophe is possessive, meaning "something belonging to the DVD." Plural has no apostrophe.

"of Gargoyles Season 1 and Season 2, Volume 1 at Amazon.com and Season 2, Volume 2 of Gargoyles has not been released on DVD."

Run-on sentence. Revise into "...at Amazon.com. Season 2, Volume 2..."

Also, the ".com" after "Amazon is not necessary. Most people will know that "Amazon" refers to the website.

Also, repeating "of Gargoyles" is probably not necessary. The reader can infer that the discussion is still about the Gargoyles DVDS.

"by the way has sales been picking up"

Since it is the beginning of a new sentence, the "b" in "By" should be capitalized.

There should be a comma between after "way."

"Sales" is plural, while "has" is singular. It should read "have sales been picking up..."

"for Gargoyles Season 1 and Season 2, Volume 1"

It would be easier to simply say "the existing Gargoyles DVDs" rather than repeating the full titles of both volumes again.

"on DVD"

Unnecessary. Season One and Season Two, Volume One of Gargoyles are not currently available in any other format.

"for Disney to release Gargoyles Season 2, Volume 2"

Confusing. Change to "so that Disney will release Gargoyles Season 2...."

"on DVD"

Again, unnecessary. DVD is the only format being discussed here.

"to complete the series and how"

Another run-on sentence. Should be "...to complete the series? And how.."

"many copies that needs to be sold for"

Should be "...many copies need to be sold of..."

"Gargoyles Season 1 and Season 2, Volume 1"

Again, "the two currently available DVDs" would be simpler.

"Are they going to release a complete series set of Gargoyles on DVD by Disney?"

Redundant and awkward. If it's going to stay, change to "Is Disney going to release a complete set of Gargoyles DVDs?"

Sometimes I wish the march of technology would slow down a little. I don't want to have to go out and buy a Blu-Ray player, so soon (just a few years) after I bought a DVD player. And I hope that when I do, they won't come out with something to make Blu-Ray obsolete shortly after that.

Incidentally, I came across a Disney Donald Duck comic on the Internet which does its own take (different from the familiar version, but well-researched) on a well-known legend tackled in "Gargoyles". Here's the link:

http://disneycomics.free.fr/Ducks/Rosa/show.php?s=date&loc=D950792

As the link's name implies, it's written by Dan Rosa, the author of "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck", and shows more of his interest in history.

Greg> That's too bad. While it's possible that fans asking their local comics retailers to order the statue for them could have helped sales, I don't know that it would have done much. A high priced item like that is going to be a little riskier; fans who might happily pick up a comic or t-shirt to help support Gargoyles might be more hesitant to plunk down around $200 for a statue. A Demona would have been great, no doubt, but it's cool that we got Goliath to begin with.

And yes, if anyone still wants to pick up an Electric Tiki Goliath (and has the money to do so), now is the time.

Demonskrye - [<---Music Videos at The Ink and Pixel Club]

To those of you who haven't picked up Electric Tiki's Goliath, but want to, I suggest you move fast, because there are only two hundred of them and, sadly, that's all we're ever gonna get.

Several months back, I wrote to Electric Tiki and they said if Goliath sold well, they'd consider Demona as their second stature. Well, I wrote to them again the other night and got this response...

***

Thanks Greg. We're proud of the way he turned out and glad you are too. Unfortunately sales don't warrant us continuing with a line so Goliath will be solo.

best,

Electric Tiki Design

***

Sales, btw, meaning that not enough retailers placed orders for him. So, this isn't on us, the fans, for not buying enough. I don't think. But, well, it is what it is.

Now, let's keep our fingers cross for Boom! to not only get the license, but be as satisfied with it as they currently are with "Darkwing Duck." That is our best hope at the moment.

Greg Bishansky

Tony> More to the point, DIsney now owns Marvel, and while they still seem okay with some other comics companies having Disney licenses, DC is Marvel's main competitor, so I doubt they'd be willing to license anything to them.

Greg Weisman has relationships with both DC and Marvel, through writing comics for both of them and producing animated TV shows for both of them. Greg is the only one who knows for certain, but as far as I can see, this hasn't translated into either publisher showing any interest in Gargoyles. Marvel even has a pre-existing relationship with the property; they published the original Gargoyles comic. Yet we have zero evidence that they're the least bit interested in doing anything with the property again.

BOOM! is the only publisher that's currently producing comics based on other Disney Afternoon shows and the only one we know of that's aware of the Gargoyles fandom. It would be nice if Marvel or DC - more likely Marvel - took an interest in the comics license, but I don't see that happening.

Demonskrye - [<---Music Videos at The Ink and Pixel Club]

TINI> Okay... how shall I put this.

DC is owned by Warner Bros.

Gargoyles is owned by Disney.

Corporate politics most likely won't let such a thing take place. They are direct competitors.

Trust me, Boom! makes the most sense.

Greg Bishansky

Now that Desdemona is back in the Clan, Id just love to see interact with Demona! Greg said she still doesnt know all the story regarding her sis after the massacre.

I was just wondering if Greg might have talked to DC about purchasing the Gargoyle license from Disney like SLG did. I'm guessing if they like his work with YJ, maybe they would like his work with Gargoyles comics and make more money for them potentially.

PHOENICIAN - I haven't been keeping up with the "Young Justice" discussion(largely because I don't have cable), but I read your review of #0 of the comic book and enjoyed it.
One thing caught my eye; the mention of a couple of super-villains called the Terror Twins, whose individual names are Tommy and Tuppence. Agatha Christie wrote a few mystery stories about a husband-and-wife team of detectives and secret agents named Tommy and Tuppence (who never achieved the fame, though, of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple); I wonder if whoever came up with the Terror Twins gave them those names as a hommage. I don't know enough about the DC Comicverse to know if the Terror Twins are pre-existing super-villains or an invention of that specific comic book, and I know (since you said so yourself) that you're not that familiar with it either, but I'm sure somebody in this comment room knows more.
Todd Jensen - [merlyn1 at mindspring dot com]

So . . . I just picked up and read both Darkwing Duck #8 and Young Justice #0 -- I've enjoyed this most recent arc in DWD, and I'll say the ending was more than satisfactory. A shame there wasn't another Gargoyles cameo, but the easter eggs in these last four issues have been insanely abundant (not to mention hilarious).

As for YJ #0, this comic was written by Greg Weisman, so I'll actually do a review for this one :D

(Haven't said this in a while, but . . .)
***SPOILERS BELOW!***
My continuing caveat with these Young Justice reviews is that I barely know a lick of DC lore. Frankly, it was Spectacular Spider-Man that most effectively introduced me to the Marvel Universe, despite me watching/reading other Marvel properties years earlier.

So if there's any inside jokes/easter eggs/homages here, I'm not likely to notice them.

Nevertheless, from the moment I read the first page, I was immediately pulled into the story. Maybe it was because I saw the two-part premiere, but even if that's the case, I don't think accessibility will be an issue for this DC newbie.

Anyways, this comic takes place between the last two scenes of "Independence Day" Part II . . . July 5th to July 8th. It really is perfect timing this issue came out this week, just days after Part II re-aired, and a couple of days before the new episode goes on the air.

The first couple and last few pages transition between television-to-comic and comic-to-television with such ease, I'm kinda wondering if both were written at the same time. ;)

Anyways, onto the story . . . this one mostly focuses on Kid Flash and him taking in the stray . . . you know, Superboy.

I am definitely reminded of the awkward moments Superman realized he has a clone, and that abandonment feeling lurks everywhere Supey goes, starting at Kid Flas-, er, Wally's home in Central City.

After a day of vegging in front of television (I'm gonna guess that Wally was giving Superboy a crash-course on pop culture), Kid Flash gets a letter from Batman (without crushing Superman's hope that it might have been Superman looking out for him) with a cash card dedicated to Superboy's "expenses." They make their way to the mall and 'Forever Sixteen' to get Superboy something to wear that isn't a solar suit . . . I smiled when Superboy only bought black shirts, justifying the classic cartoon trope of wearing the same thing every episode.

Unlike Aqualad or Robin (who are either patrolling in the ocean or stuck at the Wayne Mansion), it doesn't take long for Kid Flash and Superboy to find trouble, aka the Terror Twins, Tommy & Tuppence Terror. They seem the particularly physical sort for simply robbing a jewelery store, but it doesn't take long for Kid Flash and Superboy to get them away from their appointed hostages and well, the mall.

But before things really heat up, the Terror Twins get timid and make tracks (tee hee) . . . and not to Kid Flash and Supey's credit. We're treated to the Flash and Superman, who treat the duo with news that Batman has made his decision as well as another moment of silence (though not as awkward) from Superman.

All in all, a fun issue, and I gotta say, I'm liking the friendship that's developing between Kid Flash and Superboy, which was short of getting hostile when the two originally met in the two-parter -- now, Kid Flash is giving Superboy a 'bro' punch on the shoulder . . . and immediately regretting it. d:

Can't wait for the -- (check issue number) -- um, first issue!
Kris > Yeah, digital formats are the future, and to some extent DVDs are already in the process of being fazed out. Re: getting a "Complete Gargoyles" on DVD

While a complete package could look very cool, increase awareness of the series, and finally satisfy those of us who've wanted to own the whole thing on disc in an official capacity for years (heck, I don't even own pirates of the second half of Season 2, haven't re-watched those eps either on YouTube or anything)...I'm wondering if it even makes sense anymore.

DVD still seems to be a while away from being a dead format, but given that it's all going digital and the need for a physical disc format (DVD or blu), as opposed to just high quality files downloaded through your computer/iPad or PVR/DVR/TiVo, is seeming like a more and more oudated release model, is there a point ?

As much as I love shiny packages, I've kinda stopped buying stuff on disc. It's huge waste, there's no way around that. Even if you get the cardboard (like Season 2 Part 1's slipcase) and the paper (the inserts, the DVD cover, the disc labels) made from recycled paper(and I doubt they're using vegetable or soy-based inks for the printing--probably still petroleum), there's still the cellophane/plastic wrap that covers each copy of the release, the metal and plastic that makes up each disc, the gas to ship it all around North America, the energy that went into the manufacturing of all these in the first place...

I know not everyone's there yet, I know not everyone has a PVR or is into downloading, so maybe this'd be asking a lot of fans, to stop pining for series completion on DVD and look toward the future at what a release format for Gargoyles will realistically be in a few years. Admittedly, until/unless Disney puts Gargoyles and its other titles into a "permanent" (no such thing) repository online--cloud memory, I guess would be the term?--DVD or blu-ray is the only current viable way to guarantee you own the show for the remainder of your life/can pass it on to kids/nieces & nephews/illbegotten heirs/etc, short of keeping a reliable external hard drive or memory stick.

As usual, sorry if anyone's already posted these ideas previously. My once-a-season drop-in. I saw more pics of the Goliath Electric Tiki statue and got all nostalgic (also, still don't have the second TPB of the main SLG comic. They still have the rights to trades/reprints ? I was hoping for an all-in-one, maybe with Bad Guys included. Maybe a cool, hopefully-not-too-overpriced hardcover). Is it seriously sold out ? That's awesome. Shipping in June 2011 ? Have they determined the limited run # ? 200 statues ?

You're never to old to enjoy RR or DW:). I'd suggest at least giving the upcoming issues of each series a browse if you can afford to.

"I think that Gargoyles would be a great addition but does it fit the direction and demographic they are looking for."

Well, the show itself was greatly different than the shows it aired among, so it could still work. Besides, if the comic were to succeed, they could greenlight some of the spinoffs and make the Gargoyles comics it's own line (Their equivalent to Marvel and DC so to speak).

I understand the last comment it makes more than logical sense. I understand that many in this room experience that most all of us are Disney Afternoon fans even if we are not Disney fans right now. I think this premise that success for shows like Chip N' Dales and even Darkwing Duck in comic book sales means attention for Gargoyles. The problem with Gargoyles and what we love is that it is so different from not only all the the shows at that time but it was so different from the rest of the Disney Afternoon line up. I mean you look at that Disney Afternoon 20th anniversary poster and Goliath really stands out. Just from my perspective
I loved Chip N'Dales and Darkwing Duck was great but I wouldn't buy the comics I have out grown that, I would probably buy Ducktales but that is so Classic is ageless. I think that Gargoyles would be a great addition but does it fit the direction and demographic they are looking for. I mean no one can underestimate the sales or the Gargoyles universe fandom but who knows what Boom Studios is looking for and they may be just as likely to produce comic book versions of Talespin or even Bonkers. After all Boom has access to the numbers we have seen here and yet no Gargoyles comic.

dres - [escodr3s at yahoo dot com]

Algernon> For a while we've been trying to alert other fans to the DVDs and the trades, I'm thinking we should try on a larger scale. Increase awareness on the current Disney Afternoon comics (Darkwing is doing well as is, but Rescue Rangers could use help in that regard) and DVDs (I mean they seem to have sold well enough for further releases, but is there any evidence that many fans were unaware of the DVDs).

I mean I figure that getting Disney's attention in the Disney Afternoon as a whole would in turn get Gargoyles some attention.

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]
Algernon's comment about Norman Osborn: One of the neat things about Dark Reign is that it gives Osborn the chance to expand his horizons beyond tormenting a twenty nine year old who still lives with his mom.

Now that we've got the count down out of the way there's a topic I've been mulling over and I want to get the room's opinions. I think it's fair to say that Disney releasing Gargoyles Season 2, Volume 2 this late in the game is... unlikely. So I was wondering what it would take to convince Disney to release the complete series via digital distribution of some sort? A good example of what I'm talking about is the way Marvel's making their new Avengers 'toon available via I-Tunes. I don't claim to understand the mechanics of such things but I figure it's got to be cheaper then mass producing physical DVD sets.

Of course, DVDs should still be our ideal goal but perhaps this could act as a stepping stone. If Disney can find a way of making a modest profit off the series with minimum investment, it might encourage them to try something a little more ambitious next time.
