Adam> I can see what you are saying about Griff. He is very passionate and strong willed. However I can see why he would be passovered for second. Someone who is at odds with he's clan, even if it's for the greater good, would not be put into a leadership position. But I can see him in charge of the Camelot Clan someday.

@GregXB - stop reading my brainpan, you.

Additionally (speaking of symmetry) I think it would be nice if the Maza boy plays a significant role in all of that somewhere (although I'm sure those will start out on anything but the right foot).

Here's the problem with most fanfic writers: they seem to think Dominique is a second life. It isn't. Demona spelled it plainly in "High Noon." She's a gargoyle. Dominique is just a tool to help her in her goals. She'll use the form because she changes into a human, whether she likes it or not, but Dominique is not another life for her.

Adam> I really don't think so. Likely, whoever was in charge of the clan back then thought Una was the best candidate. Honestly, if Griff hadn't disappeared...Una probably would have chosen Griff as HER second when she took over, so passing Griff over for Una likely had nothing to do with being a slight against Griff, and everything to do with Una being qualified for the role.

Okay, Taina's artwork and the Formspring crew's take on Greg's Weird Macbeth idea (an idea I am longing to see animated) had be dig through the archives to find this little gem.

http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=605

I am now reminded of Lady Macbeth washing blood off her hands constantly. Blood that isn't actually there over guilt.

My thoughts have always been that the Space-Spawn would make Demona an offer, she would betray the Resistance, and this would lead to something far worse than the massacres of her clans. And in this moment, she would have her epiphany and finally do the right thing. Once the action calms down, I could easily see her retreating into guilt as all her sins have hit her and she faces what she's done.

My theorized relationship between her and Macbeth would come after (or during the latter part of) this, of course. But I suspect a ton of guilt, pain and a lot of mental and emotional healing will come with the package.

Phoenix: I think it's funny that you're comparing Moe to Brooklyn because I'm pretty sure they had the same voice actor in the Latin American dubs. I know Oberon had Homer Simpson's voice actor in the dubs (which was hilarious to watch!) It's been ages since I've seen those dubs!

HELLO, sorry, no update photo's. However, and again, off topic from whatever you are all talking about (expect that of me if I Come here :/)

I was watching The Simpsons Movie the other night and...I realized, Moe reminds me a lot of Brooklyn. Like, a LOT. I know it's not the same voice actor but yeah. They talk similar, their attitudes seem somewhat similar or their dispositions, whatever. Their expressive eyes, I think probably because, as a gargoyle, Brook has those larger eye..bone..things...and Moe does as well. Add on top of that, Moe's longer mouth XD so yeah, and Brooks beak.

I honestly couldn't help but to share that. They..seriously, remind me of one another.

Todd> I knew you'd chime in with some historical stuff along those lines sooner or later. Thanks for the info.

And for the record, I always thought that 'barghest' sounded like an amalgamation of the words 'gargoyle' and beast' more or less. Appropriate, perhaps.

"The Hound of Ulster" suggested that gargoyle beasts might have given rise to the "black dog" legends of the British Isles (Greg Weisman even mentioned that an earlier draft of the episode had used "Barghest" - a kind of "black dog" associated wtih northern England - as an alternate name for the Hound), though from what we know of their history, that might have been difficult to achieve if their numbers died out when they appear to have done. Maybe the legends about "black dogs" were updated from their original settings as time went on, or a few of those dogs were really members of the Third Race in disguise rather than gargoyle beasts. (Fu-Dog looks more like a lion than a dog, so we can't credit those tales to Brooklyn's Timedancing after they teamed up.)

I've done a search but I couldn't find anything, so before placing a question that's possibly already been asked in the queue I thought I'd check here.

I'm just wondering about Teekl's gender, Teekl being Klarion's cat/familiar. Does it have a gender which is thus far unconfirmed by Greg, or is in fact genderless? In past comics it's been male and female, so I wanted to know whether anything's been confirmed in the YJ universe.

Thanks. :)

The lack of beasts among the 998 rookery could be just a simple matter of more males or females being laid. So Bronx all of Bronx's beast rookery siblings could have been male.
Adam - [carl006_1999@yahoo.com]

Thanks for the welcome Matt.
You mentioned the Hound of Ulster which I think is the perfect example of why the Beasts died out in the British Isle's. The original Hound was killed by Ireland's greatest hero despite being a protector himself. The Garg Beast biggest drawback is the fact that they can't verbally defend themselves. Therefor humans will almost always perceive them as monsters that need to be destroyed. I'm pretty sure if Goliath couldn't speak that Elisa would have shot him even after he saved her.

No, Brack, I think you are right on. And you make a good point about inbreeding being a factor in their decline. Low numbers are bad, but when nearly everybody is somewhat closely related to everyone else, that is worse. I'm sure even Bronx and Boudicca are not too distantly related, first or second cousins probably. Boudicca does share some similarities to Chaw in the snout and tail, afterall.

The British Isles seem to have a problem maintaining beast numbers. I wonder why that is. Even with no massacres, it seems that they were dying out in Scotland. Greg has never mentioned if Loch Ness has any at all and we know that they are extinct among the London Clan, though who knows when that happened. It is all pretty ironic because one of the most famous beast in Gargoyles Universe history, the original Hound of Ulster, lived in British Isles. I guess after that, they went downhill.

Good thing the Xanadu Clan has been protecting the species all these centuries. I imagine that in that clan, the beasts outnumber the gargoyles!

Anyway, yeah the more I think about it, the more I suspect that for the time being at least, Bronx was the last beast in the Wyvern Clan. Perhaps there was an old one or two living there still, but they may have been too old to fight and thus Goliath didn't consider them to be "watchdogs" anymore.

And welcome to the Comment Room, Brack!

Hello everybody. First timer here, just discovered the web sight as well as the SLG comics. I found Matt's question very intriguing. I was thinking that perhaps all three of the Avalon Beast could be biologically related to Bronx. One fathered by Chomp and the other two by Bronx's older bio-brothers (assuming he had any).
I was thinking that the lack of Beast may have caused inbreeding among the surviving members of the species. Not necessarily between brothers and sisters, but between cousins maybe. My guess is that as of the 988 mating cycle there were two "families" of Beast, most of them moving on or dieing off before the massacre.
However I am still learning about Gargoyle reproduction, so if any of my thinking is wrong please let me know

Just another end of week thought/theory from Matt inspired by a brief discussion we had here recently:

In 994, was Bronx the only beast among the Wyvern Clan (aside from the three beast eggs in the rookery)? Sounds unlikely but given the number of beast eggs, we can deduce that the total beast population (including those too old or two young to mate) was probably ten or less. Half of those, like Comp and Chaw, left to form the splinter clan between 988 and 994. How many could that leave? A handful; maybe four or five tops. We didn't see any other beasts at the Castle, and that isn't enough to say for sure, BUT Goliath did tell Hakon, "I see you've met our watchdog..." refering to Bronx. The way Goliath says it implies that Bronx is the only one.

What is interesting to me is that if the Clan had survived til the hatching and maturation of the 998 rookery, Bronx and Boudicca would've likely become mates anyway (as the other two beasts would've likely paired off as they did on Avalon) only this time Bronx would be a generation older rather than Boudicca.

So there ya go. Thoughts?

Chip: I did notice, and it was quite enjoyable. While the text-only format took away what would've been the primary draw of the episode to me - having the various voice actors/actresses reading Shakespeare line-for-line - it was still a rather impressive and elaborate undertaking. Some specific kudos:

- Demona's reaction to finding herself bowing to the audience with Macbeth and Goliath. Priceless.

- Demona's "Lady Macbeth" profile pic. MAJOR kudos to whoever drew that.

- The fact that Sarah Williams ended up playing Hecate. Gotta imagine Jareth is both majorly ticked at the Sisters for involving her and...a little turned on by the costume. ;)

- Peter's response that when he died as Banquo, he was hoping to see Gwen again...rang very true for me. Man, that kid needs hugs.

- Anything. At. All. Said by St. John Devereaux. "think that those gargoyles are really good actors! I must invite them to some truly open auditions for next year's Shakespeare in the Park!" Oh, and his utter horror at having said the name of the Scottish Play onstage.

- The general framing device that only the cast is aware that they're playing "Macbeth" (albeit in semi-trances) whereas the audience still thinks they're playing "As You Like It" and reacts accordingly.

Great stuff, great stuff.

I'll tell you, ever since talking with Greg Weisman about Bodhe at the last Gathering, I've been fascinated by the character. Coming just from "City Of Stone" we saw only his cowardly nature, but with the information revealed in the comics we were able to really start understanding the character as more than that. The GargWiki has been updated with lots of his in-universe history, so I won't be redundant here, but suffice to say that Bodhe was never assassinated because he never needed to be. He was a threat to no one who wanted power. It is better to "be reasonable" than oppose someone who kills your friends and family for their own gain. The fear of further recrimination has lead him not only away from vengeance, but from justice as well.

Actually, Bodhe probably had the strongest claim to the throne of anyone at the time. The Gargoyles Universe version of him was obviously too spineless to ever try to do anything about his claim, but I always did wonder just how the real Bodhe managed to keep himself alive in Maol Chalvim's Scotland. He must have been one world class ass-kisser.

Hufflepuffs are great finders

Sorry for the double post, but thanks for that link, Bishansky. It was great fun (and reminded me that I should watch my "Gargoyles" DVDs again). Pity that the scene from the "Bad Guys" comic book where Falstaff and his gang turned up (or Kenneth III?the Grim's quote from "Hamlet", for that matter) didn't fit the format.

Incidentally, the sources of the speeches from the "Spectacular Spider-Man" rehearsal scenes:

"By the pricking of my thumbs...." - "Macbeth", of course.

"Presume not..." - From "Henry IV Part Two", where Prince Hal/Henry V parts ways with Falstaff (but how well it suits this Harry just as well as that Harry).

"Reputation!" - From "Othello", Cassio's lament after Othello sacks him for public drunkenness and brawling (arranged by Iago, of course).

The "bottled spider" speech - from "Richard III".

"Smiling villain" - from "Hamlet", though I doubt Shakespeare intended it to be performed the way that Sally performed it. :) (I've said here before that I think the line "A man may smile and smile, and be a villain" applies wonderfully to Xanatos.)

"Doubt thou..." - from "Hamlet", a love letter Hamlet wrote Ophelia, which Polonius is reading aloud (with some criticisms).

The "giant's strength" lines - from "Measure for Measure".

"Your noble son is mad..." - from "Hamlet" where Polonius is giving his tediously long report on Hamlet.

Oberon's introduction of Titania as his "once and future queen" in "Ill Met By Moonlight" makes that scene as much an Arthurian tribute as a Shakespeare tribute. (And the episode is set on Avalon.)

The Green Goblin's equation with Puck was a neat touch. The donkey's head materializing over Flash's reminded me of a Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck cartoon where a similar effect was used on Daffy after he unwittingly gave Bugs a million dollars and then realized what he'd done.

Again, thanks for sharing that with us, Bishansky.

Since Gruoch was Kenneth II's granddaughter, she had a better claim to the throne (assuming that Scotland would have welcomed a female ruler at the time - most likely not, since a hundred years later, the English nobles refused to allow Matilda to succeed her father Henry I to the throne, leading to a war between her and Stephen, the man they chose to be king of England) under the laws of primogeniture than either Duncan or Macbeth.

Which ties in with why Duncan didn't want Macbeth to marry Gruoch - and why he was so keen to get rid of Gillecomgain after *he* married Gruoch, once Duncan and Gillecomgain's alliance broke up.

Even in 1020, primogeniture wasn't very well established in Scotland, as evidenced by Duncan's fears that Macbeth might become king (even though Duncan's claim to the throne was stronger than Macbeth's).

And Gillecomgain specifically refused to assassinate Macbeth after Malcolm Canmore was born because Macbeth was an heir to the crown... even though, according to primogeniture, Canmore would have had more of a claim to the throne than Macbeth.

Adam> I can think of two possible answers. The first is that Scotland did not, at that time, practice primogeniture (the inheritance of first-born male descendants) but rather tanistry, an elective system. Kenneth III was probably Kenneth II's appointed heir. (Incidentally, Maol Chalvim II is the first case of primogeniture being used in Scotland to determine the succession.)

The other possible answer is that the crown went to whoever had the most followers/support/armies, and that was Kenneth III.

Algernon> Funny.

Adam> Good thought on the Terry Chung math. Never thought about it before.

As for Thailog's plans, who knows? I doubt he is just making fresh clones as that would be somewhat redundant. Keeping in mind that "all things are true" but "few things are accurate" we could make the guess that instead of "Future Tense"'s Thailog Shock Troops, maybe Thailog will create Thailog's Shock Troops. Basically cybernetic clones that are a mindless army, giving Thailog total control. Thailog is no dummy. He doesn't want to create another one of himself, and with the exception of Brentwood, the clones ended up being a failure despite his programming. What he needs is the "wonders of genetic engineering" combined with "the glory of robotics". To me that screams shock troops ala "Future Tense". That's my best guess.

We also know that most of the Goliath Chronicles were based off canon-in-training ideas (though some were wildly mutated like Timedancer becoming Ranson). Still, in Genesis Undone, an episode where Sevarius gets his hands on the Manhattan Clan's DNA with the help of Thailog in an adventure involving the clones, the genetic material was grafted together to create a stupid, ugly thing called Little Anton. I don't think this is in Greg or Thailog's plans, but I do wonder if combining the material is something Thailog might do. I can't think of a good purpose, that doesn't mean its impossible.

Maybe he'll even combine the two ideas. Combining the material from two or more members of the Manhattan Clan and then applying cybernetics to obtain complete control over their minds.

One thing that does occur to me as I write this is that Thailog specifically wanted material from everyone... including Bronx. What if he plans to combine Bronx's genes with everyone else to create beasts that are generally more obediant, but with some more complex thought and the ability to glide. Weird, huh? But just the kind of fun Sevarius likes to have.

Gargoyles need not apply.

Adam> Good points. We can assume that one of the beasts on Avalon is Chomp and Chaw's last egg, another is Boudicca and, as far as we can tell, unrelated to Bronx, but the third could be related to Bronx through a biological sibling or whatnot.

Of course, that begs the question why didn't Boudicca mate with the male beast if he is unrelated to her.

Regardless, Greg has said the other two are mates, and while that is subject to change, we have to work with that canon-in-training info for now.

It really puts into perspective how dire the situation was for beasts in the Wyvern Clan (not to mention throughout the British Isles). Beasts should show much faster population growth than gargoyles because they can lay a fourth egg. If you are getting rookeries with a mere three beasts, then you know they are in trouble and likely headed for local extinction.

Matt - [Saint Louis, Missouri, USA]
"I was so totally wrong..." -Lexington, "Thrill Of The Hunt"

Considering Angela said that she had never seen a gargoyle egg, it makes me wonder if the other two beasts on Avalon are mates. It is possible that the other two beasts are closely related to each other. Bronx's parents would have eggs in 938, 958, 978(Bronx) and 998. Assuming the ones from 938 and 958 are still alive, either one could be the parent to the other beast on Avalon. Plus, the beast from 938 could have an egg hatched in 978 and be Bronx's rookery sibling plus "nephew". It could alse be the on of the reasons why the Avalon clan has just three beasts. Just a thought.

Somewhat recently Greg posted a Transformer episode he submitted that was never picked up. Among the artworks mentioned in it was Bisin's Quantum Lady. I'm pretty good with Google, but I found nothing. Now I find the Ask Greg quote. Can anyone direct me to the referenced art?

Credit where credit is due- Before Greg started answering again, I was surprised at big batch of questions answered by 'helpers'. If you ever played the game Dragon Age: Origins (with the Shale expansion that came with new copies of the game), Shale is a rock golem of sorts who goes on long tirades about pigeons for that exact same reason ;)

Of course she (yes the golem ends up being a she) doesn't shed her skin as gargoyles do and thus has the evidence all over her any time she has been stuck in one place like a statue...

SomeGeek
http://www.squidoo.com/thegeeklens-cartoons

Todd> I would think the gargoyles would see the pigeons doing - you know - on other statues at night, and just put two and two together and realize the same thing was happening to them while they slept. Or maybe they'd notice pigeon droppings from time to time if they ever looked at a piece of their stone skin. An intelligent being doesn't actually have to see what's going on to get a feeling it's going on, and develop some annoyance/resentment over it.
Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

Blaise's signature reminds me:

I sometimes wonder how seriously we should take Greg Weisman's remark that gargoyles don't like pigeons. Yes, it's nor hard to guess why that would be - but the pigeons would commit their humiliations upon the gargoyles while they're in stone sleep, and thus unaware of it. The pigeon droppings would be on the thin layer of stone shell that goes flying in all directions when the gargoyles awake. Thus, the gargoyles wouldn't be conscious of what the pigeons do to them.

(I'd still like to see a scene where Bronx goes charging after some pigeons, barking savagely at them - and it's a good thing for them that he doesn't have wings.)e

Hufflepuffs are great finders

I think the quickness of the top ten is largely attributable to the fact that most people would be familiar with this weeks theme. Past weeks have involved themes that only certain posters understand, which is unfortunate. I believe that if we are going to stray from the traditional top ten, we should strive to use something that everyone can participate in. Given the nature of the site, if it isn't a common knowledge progression (A,B,C, 1,2,3, etc.) we should stick to Gargoyles themes.

To continue last weeks topic, I wanted to say that without more information (that Greg has not likely come up with yet and is even more unlikely to reveal) it is impossible to figure out how gargoyle reproduction on Avalon is going to work out. The whole problem is similiar to the issue of how aging affects the Mayan Pendant wearers. At first Greg stated that the price of wearing the pendants was that they age during both day and night rather than just night. This is a cool idea, but it lead to so many headaches in regards to the reproduction and cycles of the pendant wearers that eventually Greg just decided that the magic of the pendants compensated. The Avalon problem is even more complex and difficult. I think Greg will eventually decide that Avalon's magic compensates as well and Gargoyles will produce eggs normally there (though 24 times slower compared to the real world). As others have noted, this would mean that the Avalon Clan would have no eggs to bring to Queen Florence Island in 2198... if they remained on Avalon. I think it might be prudent for the Avalon Clan to send the eggs to the real world (under safekeeping of a trusted clan, no doubt) for a time so that, from the perspective of those on Avalon, the incubation time is very reduced even though the eggs still did their ten year cycle. Even this solution only moves the problem from the adult female to the egg and still requires a lot of math on our part, especially in regards to returning hatchlings and their age. they'd be crawling around when they would normally have years remaining in the egg. How would it all affect their cycles?

Another idea that occurs to me is that since Avalon is removed from Earth and its seasons, it could well be removed from its cycles and rhythms as well. What this means opens us even more questions since in that light Avalon gargoyles may be capable of reproducing at any time or be totally infertile... The answer would probably lie somewhere in between.

The problem for us is lack of information. We have very little. Two important bits though are that Angela had never seen an egg until Egwardo (which amazes me anyway since I would've thought she had ample chances to see them in Chac Ix Chel and Ishimura at least) so we know there are none on Avalon. This indicates that even though the two other beasts on Avalon have been capable of mating, they have not produced an egg. The other information we have is that the eggs that Katharine, Tom and Magus took to Avalon waited until 1058 to hatch. They were not little time bombs set to ten years. They had to wait to the next available cycle of the Earth even if that meant that they were in their shells a bit longer (and Greg has mentioned that the travel may have stunted their development a bit anyway). The point is that even from the evidence we do have the Earth's cycles DO take place on Avalon. The two beasts on Avalon are old enough to conceive, but have not because of the Earth cycles and Ophelia can conceive in 2007 even though she is significantly younger than female in the real world would be able to do so. How things develop from that point is up to debate.

Wow, quick top ten today.

Blaise> That is weird. Did you fix it?

A couple of minor TV Gargoyle observations. Canada's Disney XD finally ran through the Goliath Chronicles episodes once. First off, they skipped the dreaded "To Serve Mankind"(Eg*n P*x episode). That, and - we all know how they edit the word "Terrorist" out of "City Of Stone" episode 1. Well, "Angels In The Night" includes the word "Terrorism" and that is left untouched. Strange those censors.

Hi all! It's been a while. I just wanted to stop by and mention something I just found out.

WIKIPEDIA MISTAKE> While browsing Gargoyles related items at Deviantart, I came across a write-up of the series someone had done in which all the characters were listed out. Glancing through it, I found that it described Brooklyn as being "the youngest member of the clan." Surprised, I asked the contributor about it and they said they had gotten the information from Wikipedia.
I checked and, sure enough, Wikipedia described Brooklyn as the youngest of the clan; a description that was contributed sometime back in December! And, of course, no citation (or even request for a citation)! Well, I went ahead and fixed it, but I was rather surprised at that glaring piece of misinformation.
The only place I can think of where someone would take away the idea of Brooklyn as the youngest would be the Awakening book adaptation Stone Warriors Rule! where he was described as such (though where the authors of the book came up with THAT, I have no clue). Mind you, the Trio as a whole seemed like they were written much younger in that book, but still....
I don't know. I guess I'm used to people mistaking Lex for being the youngest, but Brooklyn?!

At any rate, that's all I have for now. Until next time! ****There is a loud slurping sound as Blaise is sucked back into the book. The book then slams shut and flies back to its place on the shelf.****
