Why does it seem that Aqualad is the only Atlantean with gills?

Greg responds...

He's not. The episode was set in the city of Poseidonis, where most of the population doesn't have visible gills. In Kaldur's hometown, most folk have visible gills.

Laura 'ad astra' Sack writes...

{Apologies if this is a double post}
Downtime: reactions/questions:
I enjoyed the recent episode. I can't say it was one of my favorites so far, but by definintion not every ep can be...

Main story-
1-I applaud the use of an Atlantian language, but Kal and Aquaman's speach seemed oddly stiff, almost robotic. Was this intentional to show the formalities of royalty?
2-The switch to English was nearly seemless. I didn't even notice it at first and then almost thought it was that Atlantian was used for formal situations like talking to royalty and spells. I jumped back and caught the flash in the pot switch over. (Added little meta moment of her asking if it worked and how would she know.)
3-I also liked the reverse of expectation that it seems the king's brother is loyal.
4-I did feel That Black Manta reporting to The Light was anticlimactic. All his taunting to Kal about it being lesser to serve seems hypocritical, and it wastes having a voice with the acting chops to pull a "If I can't have it no one can!" scream without sounding like a petulant child. Ironically I could have happily accepted all this as a great reversal of expectation, but after The Light being in just about every episode as the big bad behind the curtain I've got a little fatigue on them. I need to see the cast dealing with unrelated crimes too.

The rest of the story-
5-the animation continues to impress, I'd almost say it is a clear gemlike quality to it. Very expressive, very detailed (for animation) and still very clean. The interaction between Conner and Megan especially showcase it. {And also brings up a few questions; Did they kiss? How much does Red Toranado get? (I'd wager more than they'd guess if his wife and daughter come over from the print version) Why does Conner watch static? etc.}
6-Bruce continues to seem very intuned to people, including the ones closest to him. It takes me a while to get used to that, but I'm liking it. When it came to the basketball game, complete with smile, a thought had occured to me- is this an intentional reference to early Batman? I have not read the early Teen Titan stories, but I know the increasingly strained relationship beteen Dick and Bruce was an issue. But I also (again largely without reading) know that in the days before dark 'realism' took hold in comics they had a much easier relationship. Given how young Dick is in this series, it this an intentional connection to that stage of the relationship in the orignal form? And if so, (probably heading into No Comment territory), is the breakdown of that relationship the future in store?
7-Flash family was a hoot. I love seeing functional families getting equal playtime in fiction, and it reinforces they sense that we are in a fully functioning universe with history.
8-Artimas and her mom was intriging as well- Everytime you see a parent aware of that sort of extra-caricular activity you get curious, but the love is clear. Add to that that we know she has a past with the League of Assasins - seeing her actually having a home with a parent and a school life caught me by surprise.

Looking fwd to the next installment!

Greg responds...

1. Neither.

2. Thanks. We were definitely shooting for seamless.

3. Me too.

4. <shrug> "WE LIKE OUR SHOW."

5a. No.

5b. More than most - but he doesn't have a wife or daughter.

5c. I don't think he was WATCHING static. I think he was thinking, and he didn't mind the white noise as a background. (My fourteen-year-old son goes to sleep to white noise every night. I fear for his eventual college roommate, really I do.)

6. I never bought into the comics I read (in my teens and early twenties) that depicted Batman and Robin (i.e. Dick, pre-Nightwing) having this incredibly strained relationship. It always seemed forced to me. Like Batman was suddenly made to act like a jerk to predicate Robin asserting his independence. It seemed unnecessary. Robin/Dick can grow and evolve and become independent without Bruce suddenly acting like a prick. (I mean, my dad is a great guy. And yet, somehow I managed to grow up without him suddenly acting like a jerk.) Just my opinion, of course, but the YJ crew tended to agree with me, so we went a way that felt more natural to us.

7. Thanks. We had fun showing that scene. (I'm personally a big fan of Jay and Joan.)

8. No comment.

I just watched Downtime. I take it that the scene with subtitles was to show that the Atlanteans do not speak English and the English dialoge was "translated."

1) How did you create the Atlantean dialoge?

2) When Aqualad and Garth stole the uniforms of Black Manta's men, what did they do with the men themselves? Did they take them someplace with air or did they just let them drown?

Greg responds...

1. "ASKED AND ANSWERED."

2. I'll leave that to every viewer's interpretation.

Hi Greg,

Loved "Downtime." One thing I've noticed about other episodes is how dark they are visually, as in some cases it's pretty hard for me to make out some of the actions of characters in whatever warehouse or jungle they're fighting in. But there were lots of great undersea colors that made this episode gorgeous to look at.

Had a quick question about the Atlantian language used in the episode--we get that segment of Aquaman greeting Kaldur in it, but then it's pretty much all English after, albeit in that very formal tone. I know the practical side is that doing an entire episode in a made up language with subtitles would be just plain weird, but to your mind were all characters speaking Atlantian to each other during the underwater sequences? Or is English somehow a fallback language, that friends use with each other after formal greetings?

Greg responds...

They were all speaking Atlantean throughout the Atlantean sequences in the episode - except for Manta, his men, Superman and the Justice League Computer - but thanks to Lori's translation spell, all we heard was English.

Hi Greg, im greatly enjoying Young Justice. The character design departament surprise me every episode, Black Manta never looked more menacing and bad ass. Atlantis looked beautiful and the magic spells looked great, but im really dissapointed becouse compared to other characters like Mera and Aqualad, the king Aquaman seems to be a little weak if he only has his classic powers. Is Aquaman capable of using magic like the other Atlanteans ? thanks a lot for a such a great series, keep it up

Greg responds...

Aquaman has no magic, though he does have a version of his classic fish-telepathy and he's WAY stronger than most other Atlanteans.

Also, keep in mind, we were focusing on Mera and a few of her TOP pupils at the Conservatory. Most Atlanteans have no magic powers, as I'm sure you noticed.

Hey there Greg.

Just watched the episode "Downtime" and I think that episode just redeemed an awful lpt of Aquaman's famous (Albeit unfair) uselesness.

What I have to ask is, is the team's name Young Justice, in the show? I looked into quite a lot of responses and didn't see a question like this so I thought I'd ask.

Greg responds...

No. Young Justice is the title of the series, NOT the name of the Team, which is simply called "The Team." As it's not a public team, there's no need for a fancy name. Besides, we figured all those folks who are still mad at us because we're not doing the comic book Young Justice might appreciate that we weren't compounding the mistake by referring to the Team by this "unearned" name. Though they probably won't appreciate it.

Hi Greg,
In the episode "Downtime", I noticed the initial couple shots of Gotham were very similar to some shots in Brandon's movie "Under the Red Hood". I was wondering if art was reused to lower costs or whether the art was developed separately but shared some common inspiration.

Greg responds...

The former... less to lower costs than because when it came time to edit the episode, we just felt we wanted an establishing shot of Gotham that we didn't have. So...

Good catch. (Damn you!)

Mera said she was "with child" in Downtime. Was that just writing a character who speaks in a refined way or is there an S&P ban on using the word "pregnant" for cartoons? I remember that Owen used the word "expecting" to refer to Fox's pregnancy.

Greg responds...

Just writing in character. If there's a ban on "pregnant", I'm not aware of it. (Doesn't feel like a controversial word at all.)

Hello, again. I actually have questions this time, most of them pertaining to the latest episode, 'Downtime' (which, by the way, I loved: again, the romantic in me was excited to see Garth and Tula's relationship animated at last, even if they had very brief and subtle moments -- and I actually liked the triangle with Kaldur there, too).

1. Immediately following the beginning credits, we see a red-eyed, green-skinned, humanoid-fish creature chanting and practising magic. Is that Lagoon Boy making a cameo, or just a nameless guy based off of his appearance?

2. How old is Garth?

3. How old is Tula?

4. Are either Garth or Tula more skilled in wielding magic than the other, or are they equal?

5. This question NOT pertaining to 'Downtime': How old is Roy Harper?

Greg responds...

1. Lagoon Boy at age twelve.

2. Sixteen.

3. Sixteen.

4. Garth is the top of his class, able to access the "Power of the Tempest". But Tula is very good, able to do everything that Kaldur can do - but without the water-bearers.

5. Eighteen.

Hey Greg, I wanted to ask about Superman/Superboy; since the premiere, Superboy's been wanting Superman in his life as he is a clone, while Superman doesn't seem to want anything to do with him, and even snaps at those like Batman when it is brought up or even him being referred to as a "father" or Superboy as his "son". I think I could understand: out of nowhere, someone cloned him and he feels violated. But Superman acting this way is very un-Superman-like; even if he was cloned and even if he doesn't want to be a father, he could be a brother or simply a friend, because in the end Superboy is there, he IS him at a young age, and wants to be like him. So he should be in the boy's life because if he isn't, he could go the wrong path and something might happen and Superman would HAVE TO accept guilt for it, which seems to be the current situation judging by each one of their attitudes toward one another and the situation, regardless of the rest of the heroes. I like this character next to Batman, but even I want to slap the Man of Steel for acting this way. With that said, here's what I want to ask:

1) When will this Superman/Superboy situation change?
2) If what I suggested is wrong, then why is Superman acting this way?
And 3) to you Greg and the team; what led to this decision to have Superman act this way on the show (or at first on the show)?

Thank you and keep up the good work.

Greg responds...

I should probably just write "ASKED AND ANSWERED" to this entire post, but...

Let me start by REITERATING that I just flat out don't agree that Superman's response here is somehow UN-Superman-like. That, admittedly, is an interpretation many fans share, but I'm ALSO a fan, and I just don't agree. Especially since we haven't SEEN Superman's complete response (only the results of it), as the series is told from the POV of the teens (in this case, Superboy).

What Superman SHOULD do is debatable. I get you wanting to "slap" him, but I think you're being incredibly insensitive to Superman's POV on this. He's rationalized that the kid is better off without him. He's wrong, I agree. But it's understandable given his current feelings of violation. How useful could he be to Superboy, emotionally or otherwise, until he gets his own head on straight?

And Bruce, well meaning though he might have been, didn't do either Clark or Superboy any favors by positioning the issue in father/son terms. I think THAT little speech said more about Bruce Wayne's father issues than anything else.

As for your questions:

1. "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT."

2. I'm NOT saying you're wrong. Just that myself and pretty much every person working on the series disagrees with you. But it's all just opinion. You're entitled to yours. I just wish people would stop viewing the issue in such black and white terms. To me, the drama is in the greys. And it is very, very grey.

3. It felt honest.

(Somewhat incidentally, it also seemed to match up with Superman's less than stellar history in the comic books as a mentor: "Hi, I'm your cousin Kara from Krypton." "Great, cuz. Let me stick you in an orphanage." But that was a secondary bonus. The main answer is still: "It felt honest.")

Just watched Downtime and it was a great episode! I'm impressed by the amount of detail in the choreography and backgrounds, and the number of voice actors you had in the episode. While I thought cutting from scene to scene of each YJ member during their downtime would be a bit choppy, it was actually very insightful, and it made it very realistic to see each of their lives.

How do companies decide what kind of budget to give to cartoon shows? Some older cartoon shows (ie from the 90s) had worse animation as the series progressed. I noticed the even the batman's animation wasn't as good as its earlier days(although still never went that bad).

Have you or brandon watched avatar the last airbender? I feel your show is taking some cues from the show (ie, the water sorcery, the diverse locations the team travels to each ep).

I have a question about aqualad. He obviously does not live at mount justice so would he not return to atlantis when he's not crime fighting? So wouldn't that mean he sees tula and garth still? Or is he that busy?

Greg responds...

Let's answer these in reverse order.

As I've MENTIONED BEFORE, Aqualad DOES go home to Atlantis (the continent/country) between missions. He just doesn't live in the city of Poseidonis, so that, yes, a couple months had passed since he had last seen his friends. He was surprised that it had been that long. But time flies, you know...

I don't know about Brandon, but I've begun watching Avatar with my son Benny. We're near the beginning of Season Two. I like it. I don't know how much of an influence there's been, since we started YJ before I started watching Avatar.

The way companies decide on budgets is an arcane science beyond my pay grade. But guys like Brandon and myself make it our mission to squeeze as much onto the screen from whatever budget we have.

I mean no disrespect since i am a fan of the new aqualad.
I'm just curious.

Greg responds...

Well, there were many inspirations. Cal Durham, obviously, but also the Arion series which demonstrated that not all Atlanteans are Caucasian. There was the need for further diversity in the series. And the fact that Garth was dead in the comics (at least for now) and had, in any case, left the name "Aqualad" behind to become "Tempest". So it felt like the name "Aqualad" was up for grabs. We liked the parallel universe notion of the Road Not Taken for the two characters, leading to an Aqualad/Tempest team-up. It all just seemed... right.

YJ Update

Seems like a good day for an update on production...

Episodes 101-109 have aired.

Episodes 110-111 are in the can, ready to air in June.

Episode 112 is in post-production. We do the Sound Mix tomorrow.

Episode 113 is in post-production. We should be locking the edit later today.

Episodes 114-119 are in Korea being animated.

Episodes 120-124 are in Korea in layout, while final models are being completed here.

Episode 125's storyboard is in checking and track. It's slightly too long. Brandon and I will be cutting slivers out of it before it ships.

Episode 126's storyboard is in revision.

Episode 201 is in script.

Episode 202's outline is waiting for notes that should come in today.

Episode 203's outline is being edited by me this week.

Episodes 204-210 are in outline.

By the way, in case it isn't obvious: NO, WE HAVE NOT DONE OVER TWO HUNDRED EPISODES. The first digit refers to the season. The second two digits refer to the episode number for that season. So, for example: episode 111 is the eleventh episode of the first season and episode 203 is the third episode of the second season.

Hey Greg,

Sorry I haven't been keeping up with the "Young Justice" reviews. Work's been keeping me busy and frankly, there's only so many ways I can say "this is freaking awesome" before it gets old. Rest assured I've thouroghly enjoyed "Infiltrator","Denial" and "Downtime" and am eagerly awaiting more. Quick question though.

1) In "Downtime", Garth and Tula say that they haven't seen Kaldur in about two months. If he hasn't been back to Atlantis since he joined the team, then where has he been living?

Greg responds...

1. He's been to Atlantis. Just not Poseidonis. (I mean, think about it. That's like me saying I haven't been to Washington D.C. in two months, and you asking, "Gee, then if you haven't been living in the United States then where have you been living?" But I never said United States. I said Washington D.C. They don't equate.)

In any case, he lives at his HOME, which obviously is in a different Atlantean City. For more info on that, check out issue #5 of the Young Justice companion comic.

I've only got two for questions you today.
1.I've noticed there was no timestamp when it switched to Happy Harbor?
2.Please,tell me. Did miss Martian and Superboy share a kiss. Please tell me.

Greg responds...

1. We tend not to put a second time stamp when action is more or less continuous in one location and or we're intercutting between two locations and we've already stamped both once. And we had already stamped Mount Justice. And we were never actually IN Happy Harbor. (FYI, Mount Justice is right next to Happy Harbor, but it's not a legal part of the incorporated township, so we make a distinction between the two.)

2. By now, you have more information. Either way, I'll leave that to your interpretation.

Hello, Mr. Weisman. I had a few questions after watching Downtime.
1. Was the "Atlantean" lanquage derived from an existing lanquage, or was it invented wholecloth?
2. Topo's story speaks of Ocean Master, but Prince Orm was in the episode. I had always understood Ocean Master to be Aquaman's disgruntled half-brother. Is Ocean Master someone else on Earth-16?
3. Is Bruce Wayne at all concerned that Artemis might recognize that Dick Grayson is Robin while attending Gotham Academy? I realize that Clark Kent gets away with it, but neither the sunglasses nor the mask really covers all that much of Robin's face, and he doesn't put nearly as much effort into playacting the different roles as Clark does.
4. Who won the Bruce Wayne vs. Dick Grayson basketball showdown?

Hi Greg, I've got questions regarding the YJ episode "Downtime".

1.Were any Atlantis guards and Black Manta's men killed during the battle?

2.If yes to Q1, why did Aquaman only mentioned the injured guards and not the dead ones?

3.What foreign language was Aquaman and Aqualad speaking in this episode?

4.Was that Jeff Bennett voicing Alfred? if not who?

5.Was that really Patrick Warburton voicing that TV ad before Artemis' mum turns off the TV? It sounds like him. If not who?

The two stories in the second half of "Clan-Building", the Stone of Destiny tale and Brooklyn's first TimeDancer adventure, featured a lot of early Scottish history (including a few tidbits that hadn't made it into "City of Stone" and "Avalon Part One", such as the reconciliation of Gillecomgain's peasant origins in the cartoon with his being a kinsman of Macbeth in actual history). Did you get Tuppence's help for researching them again, or did you turn to other researchers this time? (I remember your mentioning having Kathy Pogge's help with the Stone of Destiny story.)

You said a few questions back about Megan that "She was certainly hit on by Wally, but *I don't agree that she was belittled by the boys*"... I take issue with the idea that what Wally is doing doesn't belittle her since he's basically harassing her. So far I've really like the show's take on it (especially Artemis shouting at Wally in episode 7) but I'm now a bit worried. Please tell me this doesn't mean he's going to keep getting away with it? I was really hoping for some pay off on how he has been treating her which (as someone who has been in that situation and really hated it) is quite bad.

A lot of the ineraction Megan has had has been her as "the outsider" as the "girl" of the group until Artemis showed up and like I said, while I did like the shows treatment of it I can't agree some of it wasn't belittling.

On a more positive note you were right in said question about her development over the coming episodes. She's a fantastic character!

Greg responds...

It depends what you mean by "getting away with it". I mean there will clearly be a payoff eventually, but I can't say it will satisfy you given what you've written above.

I would AGREE that some of what Wally's doing is belittling of M'gann, BUT he doesn't know that. And it's certainly NOT his intent. I think Wally actually thinks he's making progress with M'gann. That what he's doing is working. This isn't the act of a guy who knows he's not in the game but continues to harass a girl who doesn't want the attention. This is a case of a guy who VERY much thinks he's IN the game... and that in fact, any second, she's going to fall for his charms.

As for M'gann, I don't think she's as bothered by Wally's attention as you may think she is. I don't think she feels belittled by it. That's not the same as saying some of what he says and does isn't belittling, but as a literal alien to the culture, trained on Earth customs by DATED television, she's more perplexed by it than in any way upset. Some of his lame lines go right over her head. Some don't, but she finds him amusing and even sweet, considering that she isn't interested in the slightest.

I think the main problem that these two have is that M'gann thinks its so obvious that Wally's not in the running that she hasn't bothered to tell him. She assumes he knows. But he's too dense to see the obvious. I'm not blaming her or him. It's just a disconnect. And disconnects are where drama, conflict and, yes, even comedy comes from.

Hi Greg, I was wondering do you like Will Friedle's voicework as Ron Stoppable and the Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes)? I asked because Will brings a LOT to both of those characters, they are both very very funny and I really can't stop listening to their voices. Plus it's all because of Ron that I am a HUGE Jaime Reyes fan. Will also said in interviews that I've read, he really enjoys voicing both of those comic relief characters and that they are a whole lot of fun.

To top it all off although Kim Possible is indeed over, I still have very HIGH hopes Will Friedle will continue his work as the Blue Beetle (Jaime Reyes) in future DC cartoons and movies(You don't have to comment for this paragraph, but you can if you want). Anyway thanks for your time.

Obviously, I get irritated. I think I've been incredibly incapable of hiding my irritation recently - even with folks who aren't abusing the system and have really done nothing wrong. And, for the record, I regret that. But I'll admit it has been tough, cumulatively, to stay sanguine on my end. I've been doing this (producing cartoon shows AND answering questions about them) for nearly two decades, and though of course I've dealt with the occasional obnoxious poster here at ASK GREG, I've NEVER faced the overall level of rudeness here that I've faced since Young Justice was announced.

I do not mean to group everyone in with that. Plenty of polite folks have posted too, including plenty who don't love what they're seeing on the series (which of course never thrills me, but doesn't make me crazy). But I'm afraid this time out the polite folk are in the minority. And the rude folk are kinda killing my mood and coloring how I read everyone.

Ugh I just saw another person complaining about the spanish in Drop Zone, and as a person who not only learned Spanish as their first langauge, but also studied it in school not out of laziness but for a better understanding of the language, I can assure you that it wasn't half as bad as some people are trying to make it to be.

There were some strange phrasing, but that like you said that's perfectly explained by there being tons of different dialects of the spanish language.
As for the accents not being perfect, I could be wrong but I assumed that for the members of Kobra spanish wasn't their first language.

Greg responds...

Yes! Thank you!

Bane's supposed to be a Spanish-first-language speaker and so is his one henchman (who has one line). But the Kobra Cultist was an Anglo, who spoke Spanish (at least well enough to be understood by Bane).

Again, I'm not saying we didn't screw this up. I really have no way of knowing. But I know we tried very hard to get it right, and I'll admit to being a little stunned at the notion that we got it SO wrong.

So I appreciate the support.

Hey Greg, about the question if you guys did get the spanish wrong, its my first language and yes you guys got it VERY wrong. Yes spanish is spoken a bit different between different countries, I'm familiar with them its not much different than say Brittish or Aussie dialects that its still basically english that an American can understand, not sure where the accent was supposed to be from but grammatically it made absolutely no sense as if they had just used google translator (its actually insulting to google translator) and I had to read the subtitles to understand what they were saying

Now this sounds like I'm upset or bashing that the spanish was wrong, but I'm not I actually didn't think too much of it and I just assumed not much thought was put into it, I'm sure this happens in tons of shows all the time and to me it sounds like perfect japanese/chinese etc while a fluent speaker is going "what?" I'm just surprised that so much work went into something that came out so wrong. So just letting you know. I'd be happy to provide my email and I'd do a much better job and for free, though I assume theres a ton of legal issues not to mention NDA's that probably don't allow it but just in case I could let me know.

Greg responds...

Yeah, that's not going to work.

I don't know what to tell you. My own Spanish is limited to the three years I took in high school in the mid-70s, so all I can do is trust the FLUENT Spanish speakers that we have working on the series. They obviously disagree with you... or they're playing a big joke on me and the production.

Since we're on the topic of language, I've seen complaints on-line about the Atlantean being bad Greek in episodes 108 and 109. But that seems truly unfair. For starters it was NEVER supposed to be modern Greek. It's the Atlantean dialect of ANCIENT GREEK... keeping in mind that the Atlanteans and Ancient Greeks are separated by millennia and that languages are living organisms that change and grow as time passes.

No one's mentioned the Arabic we used in episode 109, which we also tried VERY hard to get right. I don't know if that means we succeeded or what?

Frankly at this point, I'm surprised more people haven't complained that we got the Martian Language wrong in episode 109.

Starting with episode 109 of Young Justice, can you list the character you are focusing on each episode?

Greg responds...

Well, it's not as cut and dry as it was from episodes 103-108, where we were making a concerted effort to highlight one of our leads each across six episodes.

As for 109, which has aired, by now you probably know that the focus character was pretty much Miss Martian, though we hope we gave good screen time to all the other leads except Aqualad (who's unconscious for most of the episode).

Cartoon Network has already teased that 110 features Red Arrow.

Why did Speedy become Red Arrow instead of Arsenal? It makes sense if he broke off from Green Arrow and in not the best of terms he wouldn't be calling himself just like his mentor but rather make a name for himself. Or was it something DC mandated because he hasn't used the name Arsenal since One Year Later?

Greg responds...

There were no mandates. Brandon and I made the choice. Where would the IDEA of "Arsenal" come from at this point? He's not using an arsenal, is he? He's using a bow and arrows.

Red Arrow just felt more natural a transition for him.

I'm just wondering, is there any particular reason you chose Batman to be your Justice League's leader, rather than Superman who seems to be the "traditional" choice?

Greg responds...

When was the last time Superman led the League? Has he ever, actually? I mean obviously he's an important figure within the League, but leader?

Anyway, Batman seemed the obvious choice - to us at least. He's the strategist.

But keep in mind, it's not a permanent appointment. We've been following the League in the series so far from early July through early September. That's only about two months. Over time, the League will certainly have other leaders.

Hey Greg! I am a big fan of both the Spectacular Spider-Man and Young Justice. I am hoping that Young Justice does not suffer a similar fate that the Spectacular Spider-Man did. Like a lot of people, I am racking my brain trying to figure out who Artemis is. However, instead of simply throwing a name (or group of names) at you and asking you if it's her, since, knowing you, you would probably say "no comment," I thought I'd try a more subtle approach. So here goes:

1.)In the mainstream comics, is Artemis in any way associated with Green Arrow?

2.)Roughly what decade was Artemis first introduced?

3.)Will Artemis's identity be revealed by the end of the first 26 episodes?

These next two questions don't have to do with Artemis, but I thought I'd ask them anyway:
4.)Why did you decide not to have Robin in the episode "Denial"?
5.)Given the current ratings for Young Justice, would you say that the chance that Cartoon Network would order more episodes is good?
I am hoping that you answer each of my questions, even if some of them are no comments. At least that way, I would know that you are taking the time to read my questions. Thanks for your time, and I can't wait for March 4's episode "Downtime"!

Greg responds...

1, 2, 3. "ASKED AND ANSWERED."

4. First, to establish that these characters have lives outside the Team to varying degrees, and many are still having adventures with their mentors. Secondly, to make it clear that not every character will be on every mission. Thirdly, for the pragmatic reason that one less player means more screen time for the others. As for why Robin specifically was chosen, it was felt that he knew Wally too well and would create a better bridge for him to the rest of the Team. With Robin gone, Wally becomes more isolated - which is good drama, you know?

Like the answered poster before me, this is more of a comment (make that plural, 'comments') rather than a question. Firstly, I would like to say that the show has proved amazing, in terms of animation, storytelling, dialogue, and character portrayal. So bravo, and encore! Anyway, there are several issues I'd like to comment on in particular, some positive and some admittedly negative:

1. When I'd heard that Aqualad was going to be team leader, I confess I was upset. But the way that played out was done very well, and I like Kaldur in the role. He's proven to be strong, wise, and levelheaded. If/when Robin takes over, I won't be disappointed to see him bearing the title either (though I hope Kaldur doesn't die in order for that to happen; not that I've seen or heard any hints that say he will, but when dealing with DC Comics, one can never be too careful) -- but in the meantime, I'm impressed with Aqualad as leader.

2. I like Miss Martian's character. I was afraid her personality would be gotten wrong somehow, but you've written her spot on. I was also fearful that her voice wouldn't suit her; however, Danica McKellar really brings out M'gann's naivete and innocence. While I'm at it, the same goes for Roy Harper: he's my top favourite DC hero, and you've really done him justice by bringing out his angry, rebellious side, but also making sure to show that he still cares for his friends. And Crispin Freeman is amazing as Roy.

3. I love the romantic triangle between Superboy, Miss Martian, and Kid Flash (I'm a sucker for romance). But the recent Kid Flash/Artemis hints from 'Denial' are killing me. I'm not fond of Artemis's character (sorry, but there it is), and she and Wally seem painfully mismatched to me. I just can't see Wally with a 'spitfire.' Not a fan...

4. I've heard Wonder Girl is going to show up, and I have my fingers crossed that it's going to be Donna Troy. I suppose it will be exciting to finally see a Wonder GIRL (Wonder Woman's had plenty of screentime) on an awesome show, either way -- that is to say if it's Cassie Sandsmark and not Donna. But I'll still be disappointed if it's not the latter. That said, the hopeless romantic in me also has my fingers crossed to see at least some, if not plenty of, romantic tension between Roy Harper and Donna Troy.

Greg responds...

1. Great!

2. We agree!

3. Sorry, but there is no triangle and there never was. Not in any of the characters (or creators) minds. Kid Flash is oblivious to Miss Martian's interest in Superboy. He doesn't know it, but he was never in the running. Miss Martian is not quite sure what to make of Kid Flash's hitting on her, but she never had any interest in him beyond the platonic. She likes Wally but was ATTRACTED to Superboy (and vice versa) from moment one. I think that's what happens sometimes. Sometimes two people just lock on. I'm not saying it's "Love at First Sight". But it's teen-crush at first sight. And it's moved forward from there. (Deeper feelings may come later.) People have accused us online of following a trope of good girl falling for bad boy, but they're missing that moment in "Fireworks" when they both immediately click. At that moment, M'gann had no idea Superboy was a bad boy. He was - to her, anyway - just, well, hot. Her ideal. As for Supey, Miss M. was pretty much the first girl (as opposed to woman) he had ever seen, and he locked on her as well, though he had no idea what to do with those feelings... and at times acted badly in part because of them (and because of his density). I mean you don't want a girl reading your mind, when what's on your mind is her, and you're not sure if she reciprocates. Every time he behaves badly, he struggles to make it right. And she seems quite empathetic toward his background and baggage, so she gives him a chance.

As for poor Wally and whether or not he winds up with Artemis (whom WE love, even if you don't)... you'll just have to wait and see.

Denial

And with our latest episode, I have realized that I really, really like this show. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the pilot a lot. I didn't much like the third episode, but after that it started getting better and better with every episode. So, now, by episode seven, I can say that I've officially warmed up to "Young Justice." More on this later, now on to the episode itself.

Kid Flash finally receives a much needed episode focusing on him. Okay, we knew he was stubborn, we knew he was a sleaze, but we focus more on these things. His skepticism of the supernatural was front and center. Although, I have seen a lot of people misinterpret what the moral of this episode was. A lot of people saw it as "magic is real" but I disagree, that is a very, very simplistic way of looking at it without putting in any effort to think about it. The lesson of the episode had more to do with being open minded, that there are some things that cannot be explained, and that taking a leap of faith is often necessary. And, once again, I find myself referencing "Babylon 5" with the following quote.

"Faith and reason are the shoes on your feet! You can travel further with both than you can with just one."

And no, that is not about subscribing to a religious belief, hell that quote was written by an Atheist. I myself am Agnostic, I have no actual religious beliefs of my own, I do not subscribe to any, but I still have faith that there are things beyond our understanding out there.

But back to the episode. I will admit to being quite unfamiliar with Dr. Fate. I've seen him on "Justice League" and "Justice League Unlimited" but that's where my knowledge of the character ends. This, however, was an altogether different depiction of him, but I think I liked it a lot more. I loved Ed Asner in the role of Kent Nelson, I loved how affable he was with just about everyone, particularly Madame Xanadu in the teaser.

I also loved Kent's advice to Wally about finding a spitfire of his own. I agree with that one whole heartedly. Again, getting a little personal here, but I am not attracted to women like Miss Martian at all. I don't know why, I'm just not. I've always been attracted to the spitfire types. I love women with fire in them, the type of woman who can and will kick my ass. That's what Artemis seems to be, while Miss Martian (and to be fair, I am probably still underestimating her) is more the type to want to be Superboy's very own June Cleaver. I guess this sums up why I have always preferred Peter Parker with Mary Jane Watson instead of Gwen Stacy (well, Romita's Gwen Stacy).

Okay, on with the rest of the episode.

Doesn't seem like Wally is listening to Kent's advice. But, he's young, he'll grow. One thing that I have seen a lot that does bug me is people saying he has feelings for Miss Martian. Um, no he doesn't. The only feeling for her he has is in his pants. Otherwise he wouldn't have so blatantly hit on Black Canary right in front of Miss Martian (not that she cared) two episodes ago.

Wally wearing Dr. Fate's helm was really, really cool. Although I can't help but wonder about why that thing is on his shelf with his other souvenirs. Shouldn't he have handed that over to the Justice League? And isn't the robotic eye on his shelf a camera feeding images directly back to T.O. Morrow? Doesn't Morrow work for the Light? Yup, there's some pipe laying.

Klarion the Witch Boy was wonderfully creepy as a villain. I've only seen him before in an episode of "Batman" back in the late 90's, when Batman teamed up with Etrigan the Demon. I'll admit, I thought Klarion was quite lame then, and would always change the channel when that episode showed up in re-runs. But I liked him here, he seemed a lot more sinister, and downright creepy. Of course, I also always enjoy hearing Thom Adcox' voice. And, is it just me, but aside from Lexington, he almost always seems to voice bad guys and psychos. Don't get me wrong, he's great at it, but I always think of him as Lexington first... well, I suppose there was evil Lex in "Future Tense." And Thom is kind of a bad boy in real life... ;)

Let's see, in this episode we had Jeff Bennett as Red Tornado and Abra Kadabra; Thom Adcox as Klarion; Cree Summer as Madame Xanadu; and Ed Asner as Kent Nelson. Almost a mini "Gargoyles" cast reunion. Marina Sirtis already confirmed she's appearing down the line as Queen Bee. And I doubt Weisman will resist casting Keith David in this show. So, I'll have my fingers crossed for Jonathan Frakes, Bill Faggerbakke, Salli Richardson, Brigitte Bako, Tom Wilson, Clancy Brown, and... okay, this list is beginning to get comprehensive. You get the idea.

Artemis is really growing on me. I had a feeling I would really like the character before she appeared, and I was right. She's my favorite character on the team. And I love how she is the only one on the team that doesn't let Wally get away with his crap. Hopefully he'll wise up soon and love that too.

This episode hit some personal chords for me, and like I said, finally really warmed me up to this show. Don't get me wrong, I was enjoying it prior to this. But there are shows I enjoy, and shows I warm up to. I enjoy "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" but there is nothing really special about it, and it's really, really lowbrow. But I enjoy it. But, after nineteen episodes of that, it's safe to say I'll never warm to it. And I think the big reason why I was hesitant about this series up until now is that I warmed to "Gargoyles" and "Spectacular Spider-Man" right away. I expected the same of this series, but it took longer. Maybe that's because I've spent most of my life as a Marvel Zombie (although Marvel is slowly decapitating this particular zombie). But, at this point, I can safely say that I love this show.

Greg responds...

The robotic eye is non-functional. Give them all a little credit. They'd have checked. And trust me, the League knows where the Helmet is.

Hi Greg! Will any animation errors be corrected before DVD release of Young Justice? I rarely catch them, but since Kid Flash was talking at the time, it was noticeable. During Infiltrator, while guarding the woman, his goggles switch between on/off his eyes, then back again, while he’s telling off Artemis.

If any others have occurred I missed them all, but someone out there might have spotted something else that pulled them out of the moment. Thanks!

Greg responds...

No. It's too late to correct any animation errors.

Hi Greg. I'm loving Young Justice so far, and was rather surprised with some of the things you've been able to show, especially in the Bane episode. I don't know if the standards have changed recently, but I’m used to seeing grittier subjects being only alluded to. I really like it! I think it makes their circumstances seem more real and dire. Since I’ve already given my favorable impressions in earlier questions, I wanted to mention two things which I have found to be minor annoyances, mostly because they happen so frequently:

The first is Megan’s use of youthful vernacular. It’s awkward. Since you write these kinds of lines naturally for other characters, I imagine it’s intentional to make her seem more alien. I just don’t know if it’s having the intended impact. The strongest example I can think of is after receiving an explanation of something in their plane, Megan responds to herself, “Like, duh, Megan!” Apart from the slightly awkward usage, and her not saying “like,” much, it gives me a negative impression of her when she does that. I tend to associate that kind of speech with bubble-gum, ditz caricatures. This may be contributing to the negative reaction I’ve seen mentioned a lot here towards female portrayal in the first few episodes. Artemis and Black Canary certainly don’t paint any negative pictures about women.

The second thing I've found slightly annoying is Robin picking apart words in every single episode, even if it’s just leaving off a prefix rather than a whole conversation about it. I don't think it would bother me if it happened often rather than always. I look forward to YJ episodes, and never know what kind of story to expect, but I also go in thinking, “Okay, what’s Robin going to say this time?” Since nothing else is so consistent (at least at present), it stands out a lot. It’s not a huge deal, but the frequency it’s used elevates it to catch-phrase notoriety, and it doesn’t seem like the sort of thing I should immediately call to mind when I think of Young Justice (Like Flintstones & “yabadabadoo”). I don’t know how you feel about catch-phrases, though.

I hope this fan feedback is worth something to you, even if you disagree. I’m sure I’m not the only viewer who feels this way. Keep up the good work!

Greg responds...

She never says "Like, duh, Megan!" Never. She says, "Hello, Megan!" Now, you may be shrugging and saying "What's the difference, really?" But there's a big difference. Particularly, since one of your complaints is the "like" which in fact she never says. I think the reason she's saying this is already fairly obvious, but if not, it will be.

And I'll stand by our portrayal of women in this shows (and all my shows) as diverse and not monolithic. You don't have to like everyone of the female characters I write and produce, but I won't be bound or forced to portray them all in the same way in order to avoid any whiff of criticism.

As for Robin, the fact that you're asking yourself "Okay, what's Robin going to say this time?" positively THRILLS me. Catchphrases (assuming these qualify) don't bother me. I like 'em. And they're hardly limited to The Flintstones. Even Gregory House has a catchphrase.

Ultimately, my answer is "WE LIKE OUR SHOW."

By the way, I do appreciate that you were able to write up your criticisms without being rude or obnoxious. I may not agree, but I respect the way you presented your arguments.

Having said that, I am STILL going to ask: DIDN'T YOU SEE THAT BOTH OF THESE THINGS HAD ALREADY BEEN RAISED BY POSTERS BEFORE YOU? Did you add anything to the discussion or just inadvertently hammer me with the same complaints because you didn't follow the guidelines and didn't look to see that others had beat you to it?

Enjoyed the latest episode- Denial. One question- (multiple parts):
What that Madam Xanadu, ~the~ Madam Xanadu of the DCU or just a shout out?
I read the recently ended series, and assuming that the series was not a departure from her previous characterizations, that Madam Xanadu was an immensely powerful magical being from an elder species to humans. (Can't remember what they were called, but they thought Atlantians were newbies, and when humans finally started upright they were primitive animals.) That and also Morgan LeFay's sister.
The lack of the signature "Enter freely and be unafraid" sign would point to a shout out, but the comment about her being ideally suited points the other way. If it is her- is she a young human with magical aptitude or an ancient magical being who somehow seems to have forgotten?

Greg responds...

It was Madame Xanadu... but there's obviously more to her story than we've revealed so far.

If a character (like the Joker, for example) appears in the YJ comic book before he/she appears in the show, who designs him/her? The comic book artist or the show's character designers?

Greg responds...

It depends on (a) whether the character is already designed for the show (even if you guys haven't seen him or her yet), (b) the character's significance, (c) how much free-time our character designer Phil Bourassa has and (d) how tight the deadline is.

Joker was designed by Phil, for example. Psycho-Pirate (who is the main villain of the Free Comic Book Day issue) was designed in the basic style of the series by Mike Norton with input from myself, Brandon Vietti and Phil.

1. will we be seeing a lot of focus on Wally's development in this series of Young Justice, or will his 'time' be coming later? right now he's been coming off to me as the most immature of the cast and pretty self absorbed (like his bad treatment of M'gann, objectifying the girls etc.). I always liked that in the comics Wally got a lot of development on these things (and it's nice you didn't just do a rehash of JLU Wally), but of course it mostly started *after* he was Kid Flash, so I have no idea how that fits into your plans.

2. how much say do you guys have in the tie-in comics?

Greg responds...

1. We plan to develop ALL our lead characters (and many of our supporting characters too).

2. A lot. We're keeping in close contact with DC on issues 1-6 and the Free Comic Book Day issue, all of which are being written by Art & Franco. Issue #0 and issues #7 and forward are all being written by myself and YJ staff writer Kevin Hopps. Greg responds...

Really, that's how you ask that question? You know just because it's the internet doesn't MANDATE that you HAVE to be rude. It's not like that's a rule or something. I mean think about who you are writing to. One of the creative leads on the show. How did you PICTURE me responding to that characterization. I get that you don't like it. I can even respect your desire to express that, but learn some manners, dude. GROW UP!!

You know I've been doing ASK GREG for over a decade now, and I've had obnoxious posters before on everything from Gargoyles to Spectacular Spider-Man, but I have to say the general rudeness level on Young Justice is just beyond the pale, these days. I don't want to over-generalize. Plenty of folk with manners, too, but the level of some of you is just making me want to stop. The question asking function is closed for now - not for this reason, but to allow me to catch up on the backlog while we're in reruns - but if this general level of rudeness continues when we reopen for questions, I may have to seriously consider changing the rules to this site.

Cuz I'm getting pretty tired of getting annoyed and cranky EVERY TIME I try to answer questions here. And, at this point, if some of you are TRYING to annoy me, cut it out, because (A) it's like shooting fish in a barrel and (B) you're going to ruin things for everyone else.

In any case, what you saw was Mike Norton's interpretation of a Phil Bourassa design. Both of which, I like, by the way. But if you want someone to blame, blame myself and Brandon Vietti, as no design goes through without our approval.

1) Do the Young Justice members still go to missions with their mentors when they are not acting as a team? If not, what implications have exactly the fact that Artemis is the new Green Arrow's protegee? I ask it because Green Arrow remarks than he took Artemis because Roy wanted to act solo.

2) Why has Speedy/Green Arrow a member name and acces to the Zeta-tube? The numbers had to be given after the Cadmus incident (provided that Superboy is b04) and at this moment Speedy had made the decision of leaving the "group".

Infiltrator comments:

1- Last one first- I noticed in the credits that three characters had special creator credits- Batman, Miss Martian and Cheshire. Why do some characters have special credits? (I get that some contracts might have been less 'work for hire' than others, but I can't imagine Kane (or his estate) having more control than Schuster & Segal did back in the day (or their estates now), especially considering that Superboy was not one of the specially credited characters, and IIRC Schuster and/or Segal's family actually won in court that they owned the character and he literally died in continuity until DC could sort that one out.)

2- Artimas' interaction with Cheshire and the Light reminds me a little of Cass (Batgirl) and the League of Assasins. More interesting is that she has some sort of relationship with Cheshire, when in the print universe Roy was err... involved with her.

3- Interesting- M'gan has siblings (of some sort) on Mars. I figure asking if she's a White or Green Martian is a "Wait and see" type of question. Would it be a legit question to ask if Mars has a living population in the YJ universe? (just to be clear, if so, I'm asking that ;)

4- What made you have Roy choose Red Arrow over Arsenal as his new code name?

5- Do I read correctly that Speedy, Robin and Aqualad where aquanted with Speedy before the League membership debacle? They, and by extension the rest of the group, seem to relate to him as a friend and someone they worked with in the past and not someone they crossed paths with once.

6- The destroyed weapon- did the stolen data survive the destruction of the device? I would assume that Star Labs stuff would have been downloaded, but the partial attack on Wayne Industries could still be in the device.

Greg responds...

1. This practice is the call of DC Comics legal department, and I'll admit it's a source of curiosity and sometimes perplexity for us as well. I mean, we'd love to credit EVERY character's creator, but we have so many characters it could get a little crowded on that card. And we're not entirely clear why some get the credit and some don't. Great question, though. If you learn a definitive answer, please let me know.

Kid Flash and Robin are very good friends. But July 4th was the first time all four of them had been in the same place at the same time.

It depends on how Green Arrow is written. This notion of him being a dog, who constantly sleeps around on Dinah is relatively new (to my old eyes, anyway). Sure, if you write him that way, he doesn't deserve her.

Infiltrator

Another week, and another new episode of "Young Justice." This series just gets better and better. The line-up is finally complete as Artemis joins the team.

I had a feeling Artemis was going to be my favorite member of the team, and the episode did not disappoint. She was intriguing from the get-go. Who is she? How come no one seems to have heard of her before. When Green Arrow introduced her as his niece, something just felt off. Well, the theme of the show seems to be Secrets and Lies, and so far they're doing it beautifully.

At the end of the episode, when Cheshire and later Speedy... er, I mean, Red Arrow, had their little confrontations with Artemis, I cannot say I was surprised. But still intrigued.

The League of Shadows served as this episode's antagonist. I think that was Sensei issuing the orders, but at the end he was speaking to the Light, and one particular member I don't think we've heard speak before this episode. If Sensei called him master, than I think we can safely identify him as Ra's al Ghul. Ra's knows Batman's real identity, and I cannot believe for a second that the attack on WayneTech wasn't a ploy to hack the Batcave.

As for the other new characters, I really, really liked Cheshire. I am interested in seeing her relationship with Artemis explored, not to mention that being a sucker for dark-eyed brunettes, she was hot. And she kicked a lot of ass.

I spotted the evil Spider-Man character, who wikipedia tells me is named Black Spider. After Weisman's previous series, "The Spectacular Spider-Man," I got a kick out of seeing him. I especially got a kick when I realized who was voicing him. None other than the spectacular Spider-Man himself, Josh Keaton. I'd recognize that impact grunt anywhere. My brother recognized him too.

No idea who the third assassin was.

It was nice to see Speedy again, and even nicer to see he has gone his own way as Red Arrow. But best of all was not just seeing him being an angry jerk. He still cares about his friends. That icy warning to Artemis at the end was the best development he's had all season. Looking forward to seeing more of him.

But, by far, the biggest surprise of the episode was Wally NOT hitting on a girl, specifically Artemis. He's hit on everything else that lacks a penis, but not Artemis. I wonder if that will change, or if he is always going to see her as his buddy's replacement.

The biggest laugh of the episode goes to the segments showing why telepathically linking a group of teenagers together is a bad idea. It reminded me of that episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" where Buffy gained telepathic powers.

But this episode left a lot of questions. I understand why Artemis is lying. But why was Green Arrow lying about who Artemis is? Was Batman in on it? If now, you'd think he'd vet new recruits better. Was the Light talking about Artemis at the end, or are we being misdirected? Well, it's either her or Superboy, who was created to be their weapon. I've noticed the Light don't seem broken up about him being in enemy hands, and you'd they would.

Curious...

Greg responds...

That wasn't Josh Keaton. Think about it. All he did was grunt. As much as I love Josh, there's no way I would spend the money to hire an actor just to grunt. With all the grunting in this show, I'd blow out my budget. So Black Spider was grunted by some male already in the cast for THAT episode. I honestly can't remember which guy did that particular bit of grunting.

So that "impact grunt" that BOTH you and your brother recognized as Josh... sorry, but no.

The third assassin was Hook, most famous in the comics for being Deadman's killer.

Wasn't the whole reason Martian Manhunter came to earth because his species had been wiped out? How can Miss Martian have eight sisters on Mars?

Greg responds...

She doesn't. She has twelve sisters. And seventeen brothers. And something like 300 cousins.

And the Martian race is still alive and well in the Earth-16 Universe. (From my point of view, killing them off wasn't the greatest addition to the Martian Manhunter mythos. It's stealing from Superman's schtick. Superman is the last Kryptonian. Martian Manhunter wasn't the last Martian for years and years, until that notion was added or retconned or whatever you want to call it into J'onn's backstory.)

And that's NOT why Martian Manhunter came to Earth. At least not originally when he first appeared in 1955 and not in our continuity either. He was brought here as a result of a Zeta-Beam accident.

Wow. Revealed way more than I planned to. Oh, well.

Can you list the countries that air Young Justice and the Channel that airs it in that country as of now? Also can you tell me the countries you plan to air Young Justice in the future and the channels that will air it? I asked this because I have friends overseas that may want to watch this show.

Greg responds...

I'm sorry, I just don't have any of that information.

Young Justice Question Time!

I maybe the first one to mention this, but The Light seems to be very similar to The Venture Brothers' Guild of Calamitous Intent's Council Of Thirteen. The Council is also a secret group of supervillians who meet their underlings in a dark room and hide their identities behind screens (and officially assign heroes supervillians).

1. Did you know about The Council Of Thirteen when developing YJ? Or is it a coincidence? Parody? Or a homage to your channel mate's show on Adult Swim?

I was just struck by this idea the other day:

2. Did/Does Miss. Martian have a crush on Superman? Does she really like the boy or just the "Super"? It only makes sense that she would have a crush on the "Original" as well as the "Imitiation".

When Miss. Martian first meets Superboy she compliments him on his shirt, and then in YJ#0, SB runs out a buys a dozen more just like it.

3. Does Superboy only wear the "S" T-shirt for himself, Superman, AND Miss. Martian?

I've been wondering this for a while and had to force myself to wait until Artemis' debut to ask but.

4. Why make both minority characters blond and have light colored eyes?
4.a. Do Aqualad and Artemis dye their hair?

You had to tell us that Artemis is half Vietnamese instead of it being obvious from looking at her. You have to tell us, instead of showing us. I get that Aqualad is from Atlantis and therefore should be "exotic" looking. He looks like a cross between Sisquo the rapper who's biggest hit was "The Thong Song" and Spyke Storm's nephew from X-Men: Evolution. But Artemis is blond, blue eyed, and has no accent. Nothing that sets her apart from Wally, Dick, & Speedy. Nothing that says 'I'm Asian American". I'm sure this isn't a case of let's have ethnic characters, but not TOO ethnic..........

I'm kind of underwhelmed by the opening theme for YJ. I was really hoping for a catchy opening theme (with original animation) like W.I.T.C.H., Spectacular Spiderman, or Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes'. It took me a while to realize that you all but fresh clips of the current episode in the opening, but it's still really short.

5. Is there a reason why the theme is so short?
5. a. Do you have any say in how long the theme is or is it just up to Cartoon Network?
5. b. Does a shorter theme mean you get more time for actual story telling?

I was kind of hoping to hear Jesse McCartney sing the YJ theme. Which brings me to this, since Batman: The Brave & The Bold's "Mayhem Of The Music Meister" has established that Black Canary can sing. And Robin's voice actor is a singer....

6. Why not have the Birds duet? And the rest of the cast sing?

7. Any chance of Ace: The Dark Canine and Krypto: The Super Pooch showing up?

I watched "Infiltrator" last night and being from Miami....Whooo!!! Thanks for the shout out! But there's no such thing as "Miami Beach University"...

8. Is Miami Beach University supposed to stand in for the University of Miami? And did the League of Shadows destroy it as a test? To get valuable information? Or revenge?

This brings me to the character that most irks me in the series: Speedy. He's such a stuck up jerk, I can't stand him. He thinks he's all that but hasn't really proved himself. He really doesn't play well with others. Speedy goes in and rescues the doctor and she tells him not to leave the weapon behind. He leaves it anyway instead of using the explosives he had with him to blow it up. Next he dumps the woman on the YJL and leaves them to clean up his mess. To do what exactly? Run home and blog about how he's a Lone Wolf now and no one understands him? He doesn't even see through his own mission, that being rescue the kidnapped scientist and neutralize the threat to her life. Next, he makes a big show of "changing his name and distancing himself" from Green Arrow, by becoming Red Arrow. Really, picking another color word and your mentor's last name, does not a separate identity make. Finally, at the end we're supposed to believe he really cares about someone other than himself, just cause he threatens Artemis a teenage girl? Where were you when the real battles were being fought? Jerk!

9. Had Speedy not quit, would he have been a good leader for the team?

I don't think so, he'd have pushed for leadership since's he's the oldest, while Batman would've wanted Robin. But no way 18 year old Speedy would take orders from 13 year old Robin. Plus, I'm sure the first time the other kids didn't listen to him, he'd throw a prima donna tantrum and abandon them. Aqualad is much better suited for the job.

I'm enjoying the show a lot, especially the more grounded in reality approach. Batman's not going to be punching out Darkseid and Robin won't be fighting 10 feet tall villians made of cinder block. Nothing out of the realm of what a normal human can handle.

10. Will we see the kids go on patrol and handle regular street level crime?

11. How come there are no previews for next week's episode during the credits?

Thanks again for answering my questions.

Greg responds...

1. I've never seen Venture Brothers.

2. No, I think her crush is on Superboy. Stay tuned.

3. I don't think I understand the question.

4. Shrug. It just worked out that way.

4a. No.

5. Cartoon Network mandated the length of the main title.

5a. See above.

5b. I don't think so. But it's hard to say. We get the specs all together.

5c. Again, what exactly are you asking here?

6. Does it really seem to fit the tone of this series?

7. "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT."

7a. I know there's no such thing as Miami Beach University. That's HOW we were able to use it and destroy a building there. Couldn't have done that to a real college.

8. Don't overthink the connection to any particular real university.

8a. Test and to get info.

8b. I like Red Arrow, warts and all. But you don't have to.

9. LOL. Given the previous paragraph, I can't believe you're asking that.

9a. On a side note, I can't picture Batman pushing for Robin to lead just because Speedy's suddenly in the picture. It's not like he pushed for Robin to lead without Speedy. And he pretty much praised the Team for choosing Aqualad to lead.

10. "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT."

11. I don't remember.
