I really enjoyed much of season one of Young Justice, but I was... disturbed by the Wally/Artemis relationship and its resolution. Though Artemis had many great storylines at the forefront regarding her family, the Wally/Artemis storyline seemed to focus mostly on HIS feelings and not really hers, which combined with Kent Nelson's comments about how Wally needs to "find his own spitfire" gives the relationship a very bitter taste of using a female character and her romantic attention as a tool to aide a male character's growth and/or something to be consumed to make him a better person.
We're never really given much reason to understand what appeal or advantages the relationship holds for her. I mean, the narrative hints/tropes are there and so I suppose there follows an audience expectation along the lines of "two people fight to mask their sexual tension" but I don't think just having the trappings of the trope without examining any kind of deeper emotional connection or commonality works. As it stands, it mostly just seems like they hooked up because That's How These Things Go and we were supposed to cheer for it for those same reasons.
Emotionally, it felt hollow and, frankly, problematic for the reasons I mentioned.
My apologies if this isn't the proper forum for criticism, but this has really been bothering me for a while.

"To begin with, I think you need to go back to Artemis' introduction in 'Infiltrator'. She saw a cute boy enter and that made her insecure, so she cracked a joke. He reacted VERY badly to being embarrassed, and that put them at odds, but I think that both were attracted to each other from moment one. We tried to show that without telling it - or at least without being on the head about telling it.
Then they challenged each other. Not just her challenging him, but him challenging her. And I think she came to admire his intellect - even when it was misdirected, as in 'Denial'. There has to be a reason that she kept at him. If he was of no interest to her, why would she bother? Then you have Kent Nelson. Both Wally and Artemis HEARD what Kent had to say, and it wasn't lost on them. But they didn't want to cop to it, because both felt the other didn't like him or her. So that insecurity pushed them both further into denial.
Then you have 'Bereft'. Here, as I've discussed before, they meet again for the first time without the negative first impression. They genuinely like each other, trust each other and are attracted to each other. When their memories return, so do their insecurities - neither will risk being the first to admit they like the other. But it's not like they forgot that (positive) time spent together. And it's not like their deaf to Robin's 'Get a room' line either.
And so on. Artemis saved the day in 'Homefront'. But she couldn't have done it if Wally hadn't provided the science. (And given her interest in science, revealed in "Denial", I think that would mean something to her.)
Plus, let's not forget the double-whammy of 'Failsafe' and 'Disordered'. Here we reveal just how intensely Wally feels for Artemis, and just how much interest each has in the other. The trick is neither is prepared to take a risk. Rejection from Superboy (such as it was) is nothing compared to the fear Artemis has over being rejected by Wally.
Wally meanwhile is afraid to admit his strong feelings for Artemis, so maintains focus on the safer Miss Martian. Artemis does the same toward Superboy. Both then have to be disabused of the notion that their crushes are viable. I tend to think that deep down, the revelation about Conner and M'gann's relationship was less of a shock to each then it seemed. They didn't want to admit to themselves what they were probably sensing deep down. One reason for Artemis' extreme reaction to the knowledge, I think, is that she was trying SO hard to think that Superboy was a possibility BECAUSE Wally clearly seemed NOT to be, and so she wanted to have something she could use to push Wally out of her mind.
So in 'Coldhearted', Wally learns some big lessons. Miss Martian is out of the picture - and that helps clear his mind. But mostly, he matures solidly in the episode. Now he's ready to behave differently. And in 'Insecurity', he's willing to take a risk. And Artemis rewards that risk taken, by meeting him part way. But she has other bigger insecurities in the way, and they REALLY get in the way, so that by the time we get to the beginning of 'Usual Suspects' - they're still at odds. But one of the reason they are SO at odds, is because for them, the stakes seem very high.
So when the truth finally comes out, it's a HUGE relief. She sees that he accepts her. He doesn't even have to say it. She can see that he does. And he sees that the reason she's been a pain have little to do with him. The deck is cleared.
Then they partner up in 'Auld Acquaintance', and they're a good team. All of which leads really easily into the kiss on New Year's Eve. (Another excuse to do something that they otherwise might have been scared about.)
From there, it's fairly clear sailing. I'm not saying there weren't any ups and downs during the five year gap, because there were. But they both know they have a good thing now. And they stick with it.
The irony is that a lot of fans seemed to think this was about opposites attracting. But we never saw it that way. In fact, we saw it as quite the reverse. Artemis and Kid Flash had so MUCH in common, it was nearly impossible for them to get together. But once they did, it felt very right."

Do you happen to know the ratings of each episode, does cartoon network tell you them,becuase I checked the wiki and theres nothing about the ratings. Not that I care about the ratings, I am sure they are really good but I would just like to know becuase I want Young Justice to stay on air for a long time.
Would ratings effect how long the show will stay on air?

Greg, I'm really sorry about how some of the fans have been talking to you on this web-site. I think that world of comics and animation and sci-fi fandom is populated by a lot of misfits who don't seem to fit in anywhere else. For these people, Young Justice is their happy place, and when you mess with their happy place, they get mad. This is especially true of the "shipping" fans. Mess with Wally and Artemis and they'll bite. I'm not excusing it; I've just been pondering the vociferous reaction of some fans to the changes in Young Justice cast. And I have come to the conclusion that these kinds of fans are not going to go away. This psychological make-up is what makes them fans in the first place. If it is any consolation, you and Brandon have managed to create something that people obviously care about.
2) Paula, Artemis' mom, was once a super-villain. Did she fight any current Leaguers? If so, which ones?
3) M'Gann's brain blast which we saw her use in "Image" is a formidable power - especially since most super-villains (or heroes) don't have a defense against that kind of power. Why doesn't she use it more often? Wouldn't it solve a lot of problems?
4) This is a spoiler request, but it's soooo benign... One of your designers drew this great picture of Wally and his mom at his kindergarden graduation but it was not ready in time to be included in "Coldhearted." I wonder if it still might appear on the show at some point?

I just read a comment there about shows being leaked on youtube. Not taking away from what you creative guys do but I think a lot of the blame should go to how the industry is structured. Taking Young Justice for example, If you live somewhere like America were Young Justice is screened on tv, catch up service on the Cartoon networks website(probably), available for purchase digitally from Itunes or Amazon or on a region 1 DVD, then there's no excuse. But due to international copyright laws that's not the case for those outside of the US, the show hasn't been made available to purchase in any way.
And it goes both ways. There are popular european tv shows, particularly british shows that US citizens want but can't purchase due to the DVD region system. Or if they can they are expected to wait for two-three years possibly, indefinately. Look at Gargoyles. It's only been partially released in the US, there's been zero releases to the rest of the world.
The best way to discourage piracy, in my opinion, is to make content available universally, so people are actually able to purchase the SAME content at the SAME time. If not through DVDS then digitally. I don't know why the entertainment has such a problem with this?

Anyway, I haz a question. In the episode 'Auld Acquaintance', why did Red Arrow wanted to know something about Aqualad that he hadn't told anyone else, and how did he know that someone broke his heart? Silly detail, but I like silly details^^

He wanted to confirm that Aqualad was controlling Aqualad's body. And he knew about Tula because Aqualad had told him.
The irony for me is that Red Arrow didn't understand how the Starro-Tech worked. If Aqualad HAD been possessed, Klarion would have had access to all Aqualad's memories and would still have been able to answer the question.
WAIT A MINUTE!! DOES THAT MEAN AQUALAD IS CURRENTLY POSSESSED BY STARRO-TECH?!!!

Hello Greg, my question concerns Blue Devil's coloring. When he first appeared in "Revelation," Blue Devil had white hair and yellow horns. His next appearance in "Agendas" shows him with black hair and white horns, which matches up with how he appeared in the comics. Was there a production error, or was this intentional? What color are his hair and horns supposed to be? Thank you.

Uh, Yuri played La'gaan in Season One, when all he had was one line. We were paying him for Garth, and we get a second voice free.
So now, Season Two comes along. La'gaan is older, so we had the option of recasting, because his voice could have changed. But who better than Yuri, so why recast?

It would be a shame if Garth couldn't even communicate verbally with Robin or Kid Flash.
3b) If Garth and Tula can speak English, did they know a fair bit in "Downtime" or did they only learn some in the months/years afterwards?

I read your interview about "Young Justice" at http://tv.ign.com/articles/122/1223871p1.html last evening. I enjoyed it, but the part that stood out to me the most was your comments on Vandal Savage and his fellow members of the Light as seeing themselves as the heroes and the Justice League as misguided people holding the world back from its proper direction.
That reflected one thought I'd had about the Light for a while (even though I've still only seen the first eight episodes of Season One on DVD, and read about the others on the Internet). Their name had gotten my attention, because the word "light" customarily has good connotations. And their talk in the episodes that I'd seen about "seeing the light" strengthened my suspicions that their goal wasn't conventional super-villain taking over the world, but something more - that these were people with some kind of vision for what the world ought to be like, which they were ready to achieve by any means possible, no matter how moral or ethical those methods were, a kind of "for the greater good" mentality (as "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" put it). Your interview strengthened that suspicion about the Light - which will certainly make it a group of interesting antagonists.

In this series as far as I have seen Conner dosen't wear glasses like he did in the comics. He looks the same when he's working with the team as he did when he went to school, s-shield shirt aside. I know YJ is a covert/black ops type team but one would think that Conner got his face caught on a camera somewhere.

1) Is the Brain gay? I suspect that you may not answer this one, but nothing ventured, nothing gained, so I thought I'd ask.
2) How did the Brain become a disembodied... well, brain?
3) Two previous posts had you give Wonder Woman's age as 90, then 85. Was the difference because you'd already started working on the post-timeskip timeline?
4) For your production bible, do you assign real names to characters who traditionally lack them (Bane, the Joker, the Brain, etc.)?
5) How does the Light recruit supervillains to work for them (apart from the League of Shadows and the member's own forces)?

AHHHHHHH! The season 1 finale and season 2 premier just blew my mind.
I smell some serious Greg Weisman subterfuge (or perhaps suprafuge if you ask Robin).
I can remember my tiny heart breaking the first time I saw "Future Tense" on the Disney Afternoon. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Same goes for "Failsafe".
You're not getting me again. I am already preparing myself for this to be an alternate reality (even though I know you've said that is something you avoided in Gargoyles) or something. I may have spotted a small clue that affirmed this in the final scene's time stamp.
Not guessing, just looking forward to enjoying whatever you have in store.
Also, loved the Black Spider cameo. Very clever. Spectacular Spiderman was an awesome show and the new Ultimate Spiderman is GARBAGE. Just really, really bad.

Hi Greg! I looked through the archives and found that you previously mentioned that the first couple seasons of Gargoyles cost $400k-500k per episode to produce.
Assuming the cost of haven't changed dramatically, it seems as though animation is cheaper than the standard scripted network show. Given that, I'm surprised there aren't more animated shows on the major networks, especially with anime so popular in the US now, particularly among older audiences.
I think the only weakness to Young Justice is that it feels like the stories are big enough to fit in a whole hour, but are being condensed to thirty minutes. Again, assuming the cost of animation is in the ballpark of what it was for Gargoyles, an hour-long show doesn't strike me as financially prohibitive.
1. Can you say how much Young Justice costs to produce? A ballpark would be fine if you can't/don't want to give exact numbers.
2. What are your thoughts on the lack of non-Fox/non-comedy prime-time animation? Do you think this is something that can change in the future?
3. Do you think we might one day see hour-long dramatic animation? Did you ever consider making YJ an hour long?

Your assumptions are faulty. Animation and anime have not - in this country - hit the kind of critical mass among adults that you seem to think they have. A few comedies, like Simpsons and Family Guy have worked in primetime, but others have failed. Even the great BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES - which was a huge success in the afternoons - didn't fare well in primetime.
In addition, costs HAVE changed dramatically. Budgets have not, but that means we have to learn to do more with less, generally.
More important is the issue of shelf space. An hour - per conventional wisdom - is a LONG time for kids to sit and watch an animated show. We're told, with some evidence to back it up, that they get bored. And kids still define the economics of most animated product. So if you are going to use up the VERY limited shelf space that any network has with an hour show, it darn well better kick some major butt in the ratings. Because otherwise, for nearly the same money, they could put on two shows (if not four) and have twice (or four times) the opportunity to grab the audience.
In fact, the trend isn't to longer shows, but to SHORTER shows. 11 minute episodes.
So with all that in mind:
1. No. That's proprietary information I'm not authorized to reveal.
2. Yes, I think it can change. But I won't pretend it would be easy to change the corporate culture that doesn't believe in this notion at all. What it takes, of course, is one network taking a chance on one show that's SO GOOD, that it's a hit in defiance of that culture and all conventional wisdom. That would break the floodgates. The inevitable result would be a lot of crap would go on the air, fail, and the conventional wisdom would come back into play with a vengeance. The one hit would be the "exception that proves the rule" and that would be it for awhile. That's what happened after Simpsons. (Who remembers Fish Police?) But the door would be open at least a little. Over the very long haul change is possible.
3. One day? Sure. In fact, I hope so.
3a. I'm not saying it's never crossed my mind. I'd love it, of course. But (a) it's not up to me, and (b) it's never been a realistic possibility.

I'd put Red Tornado, Hawkman and Hawkwoman just behind them. Neither Flash nor Plastic Man nor Zatanna nor Atom have super-strength, but their powers can sometimes give them more oomph. At the "bottom" are folks like Batman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Black Lightning, Rocket, though of course, they're all way stronger because of their training than the average human being. And of course, you have the Green Lanterns, who can use willpower and rings to mimic strength too - and maybe even top Superman when they're on their game. Same - in his own way - with Doctor Fate. I think that covers the whole League."

Since the video game is multiplatform, will there be any differences between any of the console versions than the others?
For example, will the nintendo DS or Wii version be drastically different from the PS3 or Xbox 360 version of the game since they have different graphics and control systems?
Also, why is Zatanna shown as an adult on the game page, but everyone else still as a minor?

I just saw someone's question about an error in the France timestamp in Misplaced and you telling him you can't be wrong because you were too careful. Obviously, you were not as careful as you thought because he was completely right. It says November 5 4:09 CEST when daylight savings in France and all other EU countries ends in the last Sunday of October. It should have been CET.
I kinda feel bad for the guy who just asked you a question about an obvious error of yours and you answered acting like you're above small errors like that. Hey, it happens to everybody, you could've been more polite and just admitted your mistake.

8.) Last but certainly not least, Wally and Artemis’s romance on this show is not only my favorite on the show, but might be my favorite romance on all the show’s you’ve produced. That’s no small feat amongst company like Goliath/Eliza, Fox/Xanatos, Peter/Gwen, Spider-Man/Black Cat. As a Wally West fan (my favorite of the Flashes), you and the YJ crew have also done something I didn’t think possible. Make me want to see him end up with someone besides Linda Park. Not that I wouldn't mind that as a detour, but as long as all roads end with him and Artemis together I'd be happy. I also thought Wally scooping her up before their first kiss and Artemis being fine with it was adorable as well. I’d also be remiss if I didn’t give major props to Jason Spisak and Stephanie Lemelin. Those two have had cracking chemistry from day one Artemis showed up. Whether it's them bickering or in the more tender moments, they deserve just as much credit as you and the crew did for bringing this relationship to life. I imagine it was probably a joy to watch them interacting at the table readings and/or voice recordings. Anyways this one wasn’t a question so much as me giving you and the crew a pat on the backs for creating one of my favorite romances in animation. I look forward to where both Wally and Artemis end up going in Season 2.

Well, since you wrote this, Mattel offered the opportunity to get Miss Martian and Superboy (in his standard costume) in the six inch size via pre-order. Unfortunately, they didn't get enough pre-orders to justify it, so they cancelled the offer. I was pretty bummed, actually. But the fans spoke to their disinterest in the product at that price-point, so there's not much for me to get all Loboish about.

Flash is more likely to see Kid Flash back in Central City. And as you've seen, Artemis and Green Arrow have regular outings in Star City. But both stop by occasionally. Superman, during Season One, didn't view Superboy as a sidekick.

Ok, my question is about the "death rules" in your shows, AKA the conditions under which you could kill a character off (for example, you said in your Gargoyles' rambles that you could show Othello and Desdemona in "City of Stone, Part 1" because A)the audience already knew they were dead and B)it already knew they'd be back as Coldstone, otherwise you couldn't have personalized the victims of the massacre; you also said that, even though you killed off the Magus in "Avalon, Part 3", you couldn't actually say outloud that he was dead).
So, the question is: under which conditions you could actually kill a character off in Gargoyles, W.I.T.C.H. and Young Justice?

Well, you seem to have already answered your own question vis-a-vis Gargoyles. And I'm not going to reveal anything along these lines for Young Justice.
That just leaves W.I.T.C.H. And I can't remember killing off anyone in W.I.T.C.H. Though we had characters who were already dead.

I wanted to know if Rocket kissed Aqualad on the cheek as a friend or was that the start of there relationship? Personally I hope Aqualad keeps his head clear because being a leader of a team is already enough to worry about. For example Batman has always been solo and he knows its dangerous to be in a relationship because your putting that person your with a risk.
My second question is how old would you say these new teen superheroes your introducing Blue Beetle, Wonder Girl, Lagoon Boy are they all around the same age as the Young Justice team 16-17?

My qyestion is about "Agendas"...what was the Leauge's decision on age for membership...chronology, biology, or simething as simple as legality - the age of aduthood where that person is from?
For instance, Gipsi is a nomad who isnt under one juristiction..how would you catagorize her (I tried to think of a character that I assume you are not going to use...Im not asking if she is GOING to be in the Leauge...just if it were possible under the rules you set).

1. First and foremost, the decision was to take things on a case-by-case basis. Since, living in the world that they do, there are always going to be exceptions. But generally, they decided on the biological/chronological age of 18 as the cut-off.

Hi Greg. I just wanted to say that I know how frustrating it can be working on a show that draws from so many years of comic book mythology and has so many diehard fans. You can't please everyone and those who are not pleased seem to be the most vocal. That being said... Young Justice is AMAZING. You have managed to make so many characters in the DC Universe (or is that Nation?) that I once thought of as superfluous or one-dimensional... utterly fascinating. Auld Acquaintance was an amazing ending for the first season and I can not wait for Young Justice Invasion. As I said, I know some people aren't pleased with things like Zatanna being young enough to be on the Team , the addition of Icon and Rocket or there being 3 Green Lanterns on Earth simultaneously, etc. But DC (like Marvel) exists in a Multiverse and this is YOUR reality. The rest of us are lucky enough to get a peek at it. So... get on board or get out of the way!

My question is about Aquaman...now I have never been oneof those "Aquaman's powers are lame" guys (in fact I contantly chastise my nephew for saying so), and I have been an avid advocate of not giving him the old Superfriends "water bolt" power in the comics...simply because it didnt make any sence given what was already estabolished about the charicter & Atlantis
My question is...why havent you given him this power in your show...now it seems to make less sence not to. If some or most Atlantians can use "hard water" magic, why cant he know just that one "trick," so to speak?
