Well, I'm back.
Time to ramble on the Gathering.
Let me start by saying, that as usual: IT ROCKED!!! I had a blast and I'm so grateful to the amazing staff: Siryn, Carol, Jubes, KWSapphire, MAui, Abram, Kess, Jessie and Mr. Andy. You guys all did a fantastic job. You should be very proud of yourselves. God knows, I'm proud of you.
Second, let me apologize in advance. So much happens in these weekends that I'm bound to forget things and people and stuff. But I was very glad to see you all, old faces and new.
Anyway, Thursday.
I got to the airport and immediately got in this ridiculously long line to check in. (I had an e-ticket and couldn't go to the gate first.)
I spotted Greg Guler outside and thought he was checking a bag with the skycap. When he came in I waved him over and he looked at me and said, "Are you checking a bag?" I said no. He said, "Then why are you waiting in this line?" Turns out he hadn't checked a bag, but rather was checking in with the skycap. So I walked outside and did the same and we both were at our gate within ten minutes.
Oddly, my parents were at the very next gate waiting to board a plane to Utah. I had a vague notion that they were going on a trip, but I had no idea I'd see them at the airport. So Greg and my mom and dad and I talked until they had to board. Then I grabbed some breakfast croissants (cuz I like to eat) and Greg and I got on the plane to Atlanta.
We both had aisle seats on an interior row, with a young woman sitting between us who had a faux fur blindfold to facilitate sleeping. She also had perfect lipstick which she spent a lot of time applying -- and I don't usually notice that kind of thing.
Anyway, when the food came she said the desert tasted like Tanning Oil. I also thought it tasted really bad. But she seemed convinced that it actually tasted like Tanning Oil.
We arrived in Atlanta early, but thunderstorms delayed our flight to Newport News, Virginia. Kathy Pogge joined us in the Atlanta airport, and the three of us just sat around talking. I did a lot of just sitting around and talking on this trip -- it's always the funnest part.
Finally, the plane departed two hours late. We tried to reach people in Virginia to warn them, but no one we called answered their cellphones.
Kathy and I sat next to each other on the flight and were treated to a stunning lightning storm. We were flying between two cloud banks and the lightning that arced between them was really amazing. Almost scary, though the flight wasn't even turbulent, so I guess we weren't that close to the storm.
We arrived in Newport News, where Carol had been waiting forever for us. She was great. Special thanks to her for all she did in getting Greg and me there and making sure we were taken care of throughout. Things were so crazed I barely got to spend any time with her, but I'm very grateful.
Anyway, it was a navigational adventure finding our way to the hotel, but we arrived. Immediately saw a bunch of familiar faces, including Jen Anderson and Patrick Toman. I hadn't thought Jen was coming... That was supposed to be a big surprise, but I was more confused than surprised. But I was VERY glad to see her. The con wouldn't be as much fun without her.
We checked in and met back down in the lobby for a VERY late dinner at Denny's. There was Greg Guler, myself, Jen, Kythera, Patrick, Kathy, Siryn and Kelly Creighton. Service was slow, but the food hit the spot. And I was just giddy to be with everyone again.
We got back to the hotel and I tried to crash, although honestly, I was so excited, I don't think I went to sleep until 4amish.
MORE TO COME...
I asked this before
Lady Leto writes...
Dear Greg.....
This is a respond to one of your ramblings. You asked:
'Is there anyone out there for whom City of Stone was your first Gargoyle experience? If so, I'd love to hear from you. Did you have a clue as to what was going on?'
Well I was getting my Dad to watch it with me for the first time. And throughout the whole thing he was asking me many question, most of them pointless like do all Gargoyles have tails? And kept on me about names. (Hudson right, nothing is real to humans till they have names.) So yes even with the flashbacks, "Previously" segment, and a hard core garg fan, he was very confused. I think next time I try to get him into Gargoyles I'll start at the beginning.
Also wanted say that it is really cool how you answer all these question. (I have been to the Archives.) It must take alot of time! And you even put up with the not so great questions! I just wanted to say thanks!
Greg responds...
You're welcome. Too bad about your dad. I was afraid of that. Did it at least intrigue him enough to make him want to see more? Or did the confusion just alienate him from the series?
I finally got my dad into the series! I picked an episode by random, it was Revelations. And he liked it! He doesn't like cartoons at all. We watch an episode each week. His favorite character is Hudson, and episode is 'The Mirror' (he thought Puck was really funny!). Well anyway, maybe I can talk him into going with me to the Gathering in 2003 (since we live in Tampa).
I'd love to see you both there.
For those of you who don't know, the site for G2003 has been chosen: NEW YORK CITY, site of the first two Gatherings ('97 & '98) and, obviously, the setting for the series.
But, hey, Lady Leto, how about grabbing your dad and heading for Gathering 2002 in Williamsburg, VA. It's a lot closer to you both physically and temporally.
hi greg my names martyn, heres my question.
what made you to create the gargoyles and why doesnt toon disney show all the episodes.it only goes up to "turf" and starts back the begining, i dont mind but its getting annoying, so its possible can you give me an addresse on toon disney so i ask them directly.
thanks for taking the time to read and answer my question
martyn
I don't have their address, I'm afraid. Though I suppose if you sent it...
TOON DISNEY
c/o WALT DISNEY COMPANY
500 South Buena Vista St.
Burbank, CA 91521
it would probably get there eventually.
I didn't realize they skipped quite THAT many episodes. I know they've never aired "DEADLY FORCE" for reasons of S&P that I find absurd, but which I'm sure they feel strongly about.
As for 'what made [me] creat the gargoyles'...
Well, I've answered that in all sorts of detail here at the archives. Explore around a bit. And if you have any specific questions, come back here and ask them.
Or come to THE GATHERING 2002 in Virginia and get the full story at the Opening Ceremonies!
Hey Greg,
I'd figure since I just got a call back from Jeff Bennett that I'd better check on you. If you are ok could you tell me how Bill(Broadway) and Thom(Lexington) are doing? I'm really conserned about how ya'll are doing and now more than ever. I know that sometimes the actors go to New York to work and Jeff got a hold of my answering machine, so he didn't elaberate(hope I spelled that right). Well, how have you been let's say between November of 1999 to present day? Since I met you, Jeff, Bill and Thom in November of '99 through Make A Wish.
Well I got homework write ya later, Bye.
Hi Cat,
I've been fine, basically. It's sweet of you to be concerned. How are you?
Thom is fine. Playing a lot of tennis. Doing a ton of radio commercials, at minimum.
I haven't talked to Bill or Jeff since (either) the 2001 L.A. Gathering or when I used each of them on the now defunct Team Atlantis show -- all this past summer. But I'm sure they're doing well, or I'd have heard.
Keep in touch. (Any chance we'll see you at G2002 in Virginia this summer?)
Greg
I live in Virginia Beach VA and want to attend the 2002 "Gathering"...but...*feels stupid*...is there a website or other place I can find out specific information on the event?
*Get the feeling I'm asking a question with an incredibly obvious answer...but I'm fairly new to Gargoyles fandom.*
The Gathering 2002 has been moved from Virginia Beach to nearby Williamsburg. The web page is (as far as I know) currently under construction. So your best bet for the most current info is to post any questions you might have to the Station 8 Comment Room. Con chair Siryn stops by regularly to answer questions, and I'm sure when the web page is ready she'll post it's addy there.
Who made the praying gargoyle?
If you come to G2002, you'll find out.
Hi Greg,
Sorry to hear about Team Atlantis. Is there any chance you tell us what you had planned for the Gargoyles/Team Atlantis semi-crossover episode? Also, would you be able to post scripts from the series if you have them available? I suspect not, but no harm in asking.
I don't have computer files for any scripts except the two that I wrote. And I won't be posting those either. But if you really want to know more about them, come to G2002.
I'm very sorry to hear that "Team Atlantis" was cancelled. I really was looking forward to the series. Especially the episode you wrote with Demona and Fiona Canmore.
Out of curiosity, will that script ever see the light of day anywhere?
Come to G2002 and find out.
DrFaust> Oh come ON! You don't think Greg is going to say anything about that episode until it actually airs, do you?
Well, now it won't be airing unfortunately, it won't even get made. But all will be revealed in Virginia Beach next summer. And we'll have some interesting items for sale at the auction.
So what happened in Paris, 1920 that was so significant to the Atlantis and Gargoyles universes?
Come to G2002 and find out.
