I know that Disney isn't totally giving up on the Gargoyles franchise, but is there anything specific they are giving up on? And is there anything special in the future for Gargoyles? Because i am getting a little tired of the same episodes and comics. Thanks for taking the time to read this.
You're ALREADY tired of the comics? Some of them JUST came out.
Disney has no current plans for Gargoyles. The good news is SLG is still interested in making more Gargoyles and Gargoyles-related comics, but need to make a new licensing deal with Disney before they/we can start.
Dear Greg,
I have watched Gargoyles ever since it came on back in the nineties. It was a shame to see it end with the Goliath Chronicles... Will you try to revive the show, and if you do, when?
We have revived it... as comics. Please pick up the three trade paperbacks.
I just found out about the Gathering being the last. Unfortunate, as I never got a chance to go there. :(
Also, this is an issue I thought I'd ask. I looked around in the archives but no cigar. If it was answered, I simply didn't notice, and I apologize beforehand if this is the case. If you were ever unable to continue the Gargoyles in any way, shape or form other than cartoons, comics, DVD's and such, how would you continue the story? Maybe publishing them online in deviantArt or a website of its own in story or comic form? Would you be willing to do that, if it were to come to that? Thanks again.
PS: Did you know that newest web sensation the Nostalgia Critic has reviewed the Gargoyles show? He gave it high praise. Feel free to drop by here:

Yes, I've seen the Nostalgia Critic's review. It was pretty cool.
As for your main question, it's just a completely unworkable hypothetical. It assumes I give up at some point on doing Gargoyles again in a commercial medium. That's just not likely to happen -- ever.
Okay, in the period of just a few days, I have been rocked by two incredible pieces of news.
1. Last Thursday (8/27/09), Vic Cook and I were informed that in exchange for some concession vis-a-vis the live action Spider-Man features, Sony returned the television rights (including the animated television rights) for Spider-Man to Marvel. This took place the day before ComicCon, I'm told. But I was only informed of it this past week.
2. Today (8/31/09) comes the news that Disney has purchased Marvel outright.
NOW, before you ask -- before you post a thousand duplicate and/or overlapping questions to ASK GREG -- let me be clear: I have NO IDEA what this means for either Gargoyles or The Spectacular Spider-Man. Neither of these developments are by definition good news or bad news. Shocking news, sure. But how it will play out for either or both properties is a complete mystery to me. As soon as I have ANY information on either property, I will post it here at ASK GREG. Until then, don't ask. Seriously. Just don't. There's just no point in bogging down the queue with questions I have no answer to. Thank you for your cooperation.
Hey Greg big fan, Awsome work on the Spiderman series it truely is the best. But my question was about the gargoyles series. I recently revistited the show and watched it from beginning to end and i was seriously impressed. I know that disney has the rights and all that, but have you ever tried/considered to re-pitch the series to them? perhaps thats simply not how things work but i find it dificult to see how such a powerful storyline couldnt be profitable.
I've pitched and repitched Gargoyles to Disney many, many times. No luck beyond the DVDs and the comics we have now. But I haven't given up.
what do you think/is the future for gargoyles are there and plans to continue the "saga" after the last few comics are released or is Gargoyles dead in the wind.
-thanks for reading
<sigh>
No one checks the archives...
Anyway, we are hoping to do more, but much depends on the sales of these most recent trade paperbacks.
But in any case, Gargoyles will NEVER be "dead in the wind" as far as I'm concerned.
Since Disney has provided a deal to stream their shows on Hulu, is it possible that the Gargoyles animated series could be on Hulu?
No idea.
There was time, so long ago, in cities far away that Gargoyles were one of the most watched cartoons in the land. Many seem to ask the same questions on release dates, but I am curious if there was anyway to contact the "mouse" other than by sales. Is there an email address, or physical address that one could "write too", and maybe get the corporate heads to see that the fan base has never left? They have created the sci-fi through movies and tv series in the last few years, I would have thought Disney would want to be in the "game".
I am 28 now and remember rushing home from school just to watch the latest and greatest of this fantastic series.
Anyway, with out the brilliance of the creators and writers, I don't believe this series would have done as well as it had...well with the exception of season three. It was okay, just not up to the standards of seasons 1 and 2.
Well, I'm sure there are e-mails and addresses you can write to. I don't know them. But a little research could probably reveal them to you. If you do write, I'd recommend being respectful as opposed to hostile. But I still say the best way to get Disney's attention to the property is with one's wallet.
Will there ever be a new gargoyle series on tv?
I hope so.
Greetings, Mr. Weisman. First off, let me say that it is an honor to be able to speak to you, regardless of whether my question is accepted or not. I truly wish I were able to meet you someday being a writer myself! If only my living in Puerto Rico were not so bothersome... (why not make a Gathering here? :3)
Anyways, on to my question. We all know the story: for reasons beyond us, Disney canceled the legendary Gargoyles TV show we all know and love, and then we got a certain spin-off fiasco. Then, literally a decade later, we get a gratifying notice: the comics! (which I will definitely buy this summer, hopefully, even if it's only the Clan Building trades.) But now, sadly, Disney's gone EPIC CANCEL on us. Again. Therefore, I must ask this question. Apologies if it has been asked, by the way. Here goes:
Has it crossed your mind to consult other animation companies, such as Viz, Funimation, Man of Action (creators of the excellent Ben 10 series) on acquiring the license off Disney, or perhaps giving the series a new animated show on a different genre, such as anime or CG? Hell, I'm pretty sure people would pack the theater if it were to be turned into an anime or CG, especially given the highly impressionable teenager crowd of today that's into these genres.
If you ask me, Gargoyles is definitely not doing well under Disney's wing- I mean, it was virtually untouched for a whole decade and more and would have been thrown into the dark hell of obscurity were it not for the fans-i.e. us, and I'd like to take the chance to thank the fans for doing everything the fandom has done.
Thank you very much for your time, sir. It has been an incredible privilege that you even read this letter. Greetings from Puerto Rico, God Bless and please keep giving us great stories to enjoy.

Lares, P.R.
PS: Did I mention your Spider-Man series is awesome? If not, there we go. :)
First off, thanks for all the praise.
You're welcome to organize and hold a Gargoyles Convention in Puerto Rico. I'd be happy to attend too.
The reasons for Gargoyles being cancelled are NOT beyond us. I've laid them out many times, and you can find them by looking through the ASK GREG FAQ. Calling "Goliath Chronicles" a spin-off, isn't really accurate either. It was a third season, rebranded, and with different behind the scenes talent running the production.
And again, to be accurate, Disney didn't cancel the comics. Technically, SLG did, because they could not afford the license under the terms Disney was offering. But sales of the trades will determine whether we'll eventually be back.
And, yes, this question has been asked and answered MANY, MANY times, so check the archives for fuller answers. But briefly, there's no way Disney would release the animation license to another company. And bashing Disney's efforts doesn't further our cause.
I'm loving the effort and detail put into Spectacular Spider-Man! It's incredible how this show stays close to the comics, and somehow does its own thing! I can't find anything negative to say, and I'm accustomed to always finding something bad to say.
But I am curious...what was the reasons behind putting this show (in the USA) on Disney XD? The show started on CW, and it was doing well (wasn't it?) on that network, then BAM...Disney has the show...and their decisions to torment us with how long we have to wait for the season 2 episodes seem so...stupid. What happened? Why Disney?
(We are talking about the same company that screwed us all on Gargoyles after season 2 aftreall, Mr. Weisman...)
Wow... where to start.
First, thank you for the compliments.
Second, Disney did NOT "screw us all" after season 2 of Gargoyles. That's patently false. One could argue about how good a job they did or didn't do with the show, but no screwing was involved. For more information, read this: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/faq.php?s=realworld
Third, as for Spidey, the show aired originally on KidsWB, which was a programming block on the CW. Halfway through our season, we learned that CW was dissolving the KidsWB block and selling (renting?) the space to 4KidsTV. So KidsWB became CW4Kids. Sounds like nothing more than a minor name change, but that's not true. CW4Kids was a totally different business entity. I had ZERO involvement in or direct knowledge of the negotiations that followed with either CW4Kids or with DisneyXD (or with Cartoon Network or any other channel Sony might have talked to), but I think it's safe to assume that DisneyXD offered Sony the best OVERALL financial deal, which doesn't necessarily mean the biggest episodic license fee. There are other FINANCIAL factors too that I'm sure were considered. But... and I hope this doesn't shock you... it is ultimately all about money.
Hey Greg lets just say if the comics are sucessful and thier that popular. Do you think we will have a new series of Gargoyles or a remake of season 3? In the future I hope we get a live action movie of Gargoyles and hopefully there will be new products such as games, toys, cups, keychains, posters, etc.
Anything's possible.
I've been a huge fan of Gargoyles since I was a little girl and I have felt Disney shot itself in the foot for never really appreciating this amazing, revolutionary series. My question is does Greg think Disney has lost it's drive for quality and dedication to good animation and ideas in recent years? And is there anyway to negotiate with Disney to jump start this series for present generations? Thanks so much Greg! Your work gave me history and adventure in my childhood!
Check the archives.
Hi Greg,
this is the first question i post in YEARS... sure feels weird...
Anyways, with the comics being quite a success (for us - thank you so much for making this dream come true), I finally hope I got how the "spin-offs" were intentioned. Somehow I allways got the idea of them being "real" spin-offs, with as many episodess as Gargoyles. I'm happy BAD GUYS has come out in this form and this capacity, it suits the story, theme and place in the Garg-universe.
With the future of the comics being on-hiatus though, I would love to hear if you have thought of releasing the other spin-offs on potential mediums.
For example, I just read into the 2198 storyline, and it came to my mind that it would make a quite interesting computer game. Not that I want to limit my question to this, but today there are so many different ways of telling a story, that hold many opportunities in character development and storytelling (be it computer games or a youtube series or "Alternate Reality Games" for the Internet, that consist of prequels or spin-offs, as was done with Dark Knight or LOST or Cloverfield - for the film version of WATCHMEN, there'll even be an animated panel-retelling of the chapters - kind of like what is done at the Gathering with the voice-acting
I know Disney still has to give the OK, but have you ever thought about releasing one of the spin-offs on a totally different medium than Comics or TV? And if you did, would it change the "course" of the story?
I hope this is not too off, since I know you're fighting for the comics to stay alive and the DVDs to be released, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
Thank you so much,
Have a nice day.
I'm always open to trying new things. But no company has approached me about it. And it isn't as simple as saying Disney would have to okay it. Of course, they would, but their okay would be contingent on being paid a considerable sum of money... up front.
Just one more question, if I may? Do you think that there will ever be another Gargoyles series?
I hope so.
Since the cancellation of Gargoyles with the other stories that you have created have you tried to take the ideas for any of the spin offs to other companies such as Scifi, Cartoon Network, etc to try to get a new series or one of the spin offs produced? I loved Gargoyles, as well as, your work on other series, loved the Goliath Chronicles and would love to see the completed spinoff for King Arthur and Gryph. Do you have any plans to work on any other series in the future other than Spiderman, yours or others?
Boy someone could stand a little meander through the archives. Not saying who. But someone.
Anyway... DISNEY owns Gargoyles and all its spin-offs. Period.
But we are continuing both the original series and at least one (and maybe more) of the spin-offs in comic book form. Check it out!
I'm very happy doing Spider-Man for now, but odds are I'll work on a lot of other series (hopefully), you know, before I die or whatever.
Hi Mr. Weisman ^_^
I'd like to know if the show would ever come back. I know that it was canceled/terminated and I'm hoping that some time in the near future that it will come back with new ep's and the canceled/terminated will change to coming back. Will this EVER happen?????? I was a big fan of the show and still am and would love to see it back on the air.
I would also like to know why the show was even canceled in the first place. The show rocked, wasn't too violent, no swears, top notch charactors, first rate story line and with humor for all ages that everyone from the six yr.old to the college student could find humourous. Why would a show with such promise and talent be canned???????
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND FOR TAKING THE TIME TO WRITE BACK TO ME. ^_^
Sincerly:Jewl/IrishPhantom
I'm going to refer you to the ASK GREG FAQ and ARCHIVES for the answer to both those questions. They've both been answered before in copious detail.
will gaegoyles ever return to tv
You never know.
Hi Greg,
Thank you for all of your work in this series. I have been watching gargoyles since it first came out and they are my favorite cartoon of all time. You really are a genious. I wanted to know if there is anyone I can write and beg to bring the show back to life. I know one person won't matter but if seeral do maybe Disney would realize what they are missing.
Thank you, by the way I just ordered 6 of the new comics, I cant wait to read them. I had no idea you started making a comic. I am very excited, thank you.
The comic is -- for now at least -- our way of bringing the show back. Supporting the comics, the DVDs and the Gathering with your wallets is the best way to get Disney's attention.
Greg, I am A huge fan of both W.I.T.C.H. and Gargolyes, the best shows on TV. I'm glad they are at least runing reruns of them both, and I hope that'll continue for a long time. I am also a huge fan of Disney World, een going at least once a year since I was 3. Do you belive that there will ever be any continuation of either seires on TV? and even if not I want to thank you for you work on two incredible shows.
WITCH continues on in comics, and now Gargoyles does too.
how can we bring back new episodes of gargoyles. you say we need to see the show but it comes on at 2:30 3:30am central time and whos gonna watch t.v. that late. is there another way to bring back the show
<SIGH>
Yes, for the umpteenth time (see the archives if you don't believe that I've answered this ad nauseum) we need to SPEND MONEY. Buy the DVDs. Buy the COMICS. Attend the GATHERING.
And we need to SPREAD THE WORD to THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of people so that some percentage of those people SPEND MONEY. Buy the DVDs. Buy the COMICS. Attend the GATHERING.
will the show come back with new episodes
Greg Weisman says:
There are no current plans for a fourth (or even a real third) season of the series on television, but you can look to the comics to continue the series, picking up right where Hunter's Moon left off.
Before I ask my question, I'd just like to say that I've been a fan of the series ever since its original run in the 90s, and I think the work you and everyone else on the crew did was (well, 'is', actually) brilliant. Especially during the first season and the first half of the second season.
Now, that I've take up excessive time with some praise. I'd like to know: now that you have ball rolling for the series again with the comic book series, is there a chance that we could ever be seeing new episodes someday?
There's always a chance, but I'm focused on the comic for now.
if you had the chanc would you turn the comics it to the a new eppsoid of the searies
Sure.
Why did the creators of the show stop making the series?
Greg Weisman says:
The short answer is that it didn't perform up to Disney's expectations. It did well enough, to the degree that it could be considered a hit (at least before The Goliath Chronicles). However, Disney really wanted it to outdo Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and it failed to succeed at that.
