One other question that needs asking.
1. Why did you make Ma'alefa'ak the name of a type of Martian animal instead of Martian Manhunter's evil twin brother like in the mainstream comics? I mean, I know he was responsible for the Martian genocide which you took out, but he was awesome on "Justice League: Doom" and he could be used for another important role on Earth-16.
SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Hi Greg, I'm a big fan of your work and the artwork done by Phil Bourassa (hope I spelled that right) for Young Justice. I'm excited for Cold Hearted and I'm still freaking out over the end of Misplaced, but I have a question about Klarion's magic circle. Why is it that none of the wizards he summoned were not surprised by being summoned to an island by a Lord of Chaos? The episode was amazing, but that just seems a little surprising that none of them didn't at least jut look around for a second with a WTF look.
They were expecting the summons.
Do Captain planet, the Flaming C, or any other parodies exist on earth-16?
Is Captain Planet a parody?
As for Flaming C: ASKED AND ANSWERED.
As for anyone else: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
In Misplaed before escaping did Klarion call the team armadillos?
Yes. Yes, he did. I think he meant to say "Alligators". But he's kinda chaotic in his thinking.
1) Did Vandal Savage adopt different identities over the years?
2) Did he adopt new looks?
2a) If so, how did he manage to make do with such prominent and distinctive scars across his face?
1. Yes.
2. Not particularly, though I'm sure facial hair came and went. And you should have seen that perm he had in the 70s. ;)
2a. He'd just flat out disappear for decades between identities and change locations. Until at least the mid-20th century, there was really no way anyone could possibly identify him.
Who is the leader of the injustice league? Hope its joker
Count Vertigo is basically the field commander.
Hi Greg! Thanks again for both the show and your willingness to answer questions.
On Earth-16, did Giovanni Zatara ever work with an assistant named Tong as he did back in his original ACTION COMICS appearances, or have you dropped that little bit of Mandrake the Magician rip-offery?
SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Hi Greg sorry about my last question, not fully aware that was rude but I alot of people didn't like Brent's joker so I just to ask. Anyway...
1. How old is Count Vertigo
2. How old is Hugo Strange
3. (Not making any requests) will we get to see Cheetah?
1. Count Vertigo was 35 in "Coldhearted".
2. ASKED AND ANSWERED.
3. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Does Artemis Box? And also will we get to see her use boxing glove arrows?
1. A bit. She's more of a kick-boxer and mix-martial artist.
2. Nope.
1.Since Wally is turning 16 in the episode coldhearted and the show is going along with 2010s calendar, does that mean he was born in 1994?
2.(a)When's Artemis' birthday?Has it passed?
(b)If it has passed, does that mean she is also 16 or is she a year younger than Wally(born in 1995)?
1. Unofficially, yes.
2a. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
2b. She is still 15 at the end of Season One.
Hi, Greg! :) Me and my family love this show. I talk about it all the time during shcool. All the heroes you show in Young Justice had convinsed me to buy my first comic book (the new 52 made it really easier, though!!!) Thank you for answering these questions and um I'm really really sorry if these questions are too spoiler-ish or if they have been answered before...
1. To my wiki knowledge, I don't think Megan has ever been with Superboy. Or Wally with Artemis. What made you choose these two people to go together. Basically, what made you decide on the pairings?
2. Does Artemis have a mentor bond with Green Arrow, or is the niese thing just a cover and that's it?
3. Were the main team's personalities made just for the show or were they influensced by the comics? Because I googled Superboy once and he was shown to be really outgoing and cheerful, which surprised me.
4. Captain Marvel shocked me when he transformed into a kid maybe even younger than me1! He's so cool. But when I searched his name in wiki, it said he has a twin sister and a lot of sidekicks and goes to an orphanage school (thats so sad!). In the show, though, he lives with an uncle(?) I think. So, um, where is Captain Marvel timeline-wise? Was this when he was already adopted and before he found his sister?
Thank you very much for your time!
1. Felt right to us.
2. The niece thing was a cover, but they did quickly develop a mentor/protegee bond, which you'll see more of if you pick up our companion comic book, particularly in issue #16.
3. Both.
4. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Are Superman and Wonder Woman in a relationship on this earth?
Is it really any of your business? Can't their private lives remain private. ;)
Or if you prefer a serious answer: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Belle Rave's Wall made from Krytonite &/or Lead
No Kryptonite. There may be lead mixed into the steel alloy. I don't know.
1.) How well known are Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson? To clarify, would they be easily recognized if someone happened to pass them on the street or are they mostly out of the limelight?
2.) Was Bruce Wayne's adoption of Dick Grayson well-publicized?
3.) What is Bruce Wayne's position in Wayne Enterprises? Does he have controlling stock?
1. Bruce Wayne is a public figure - though hardly a Hollywood star type. Dick is pretty much unknown.
2. Not particularly.
3. He's CEO, but not COO. And, I'd think so.
Hey Greg Why are you trying Kid Flash with Artemis since we all know who she really is it more likey end up with Icicle Jr?
You seem to be assuming that what took place in the main DCU is a lock for Earth-16. And that's just not so. Heck, it doesn't even seem to be the case for the new 52 Universe.
and another comment about "misplaced". that scene where zatanna/nabu says "no" to zatara's request to release her... it's been a long time since any animated show has made me go "wow". who storyboarded that shot of her? it was perfect from the tilt of her head to her stone cold eyes.
There's just no way for me to remember specifically, I'm afraid. But the credited board artists for 119 were: Charles E. Drost, III, Paul Harmon and Jeff Johnson, and the credited revisionist was Owen Sullivan. Throw in director MIchael Chang and Producer Brandon Vietti, and the odds are that one of those six talented people (plus the animators) gave you your "wow"!
Are there any more servants in the Wayne household, or is Alfred the only one?
Just Alfred.
How old is Professor Ivo?
He's 62 at the end of Season One.
1. In Homefront how did Kid Flash and Superboy get encased in metal?
2. How long has Wonder Woman been active as a heroine?
3. Could you give a translation of the spell Kent Nelson used to protect Kid Flash from Klarion?
4. Are the designations of the Light based on the order they joined?
1. Molten metal, i.e. Superboy's motorcycle, heated by Red Inferno and rapidly cooled by Red Torpedo.
2. ASKED AND ANSWERED.
3. "Certe toto sentio nos in kansate non iam adesse!" I don't have the exact translation from the Latin here with me, but it's more or less along the lines of "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas any more."
4. Yes.
Do you know why the scene in "Misplaced" where two hoodlums are spray painting on the school, and are stopped by Miss Martian were cut from the broadcast version of the episode, but included in the digital releases, such as iTunes?
Length issues. We had to trim time from a handful of episodes that originally posted BEFORE we had an official length for DC Nation (which is shorter in order to make room for the shorts).
Recently DC has announced that, due to what I assume are years of legal issues, they are going to stop calling Billy Batson's alter-ego "Captain Marvel" in the comics and call him "Shazam" instead. Now, if this were any other New 52 issue such as "Will any new Teen Titans appear in Young Justice," I wouldn't even bother asking because of how obviously spoiler-ific it is. However, for this particular subject, I can't help but wonder: Will Captain Marvel's name be changed to Shazam for the show? Would DC let you keep his old name even if you wanted to?
We have no choice BUT to keep it as is, i.e. as Captain Marvel. Every single line of dialogue is already recorded, etc.
Hi Greg!
In Revelation and Failsafe, and later on Disordered, Wally seems to grow a bit closer to Artemis. Yet, they haven't had any interaction at all after episode 17 (just that bit on Misplaced about Teeklr), and it's like nothing ever happened. In fact, Wally is back to flirting with M'gann and all. So, I was wondering if you could say why he's acting like Failsafe never happened (without spoiling anything of course). Thanks in advance!
I thought it was pretty clear from "Disordered" that he doesn't WANT to acknowledge what happened. He's afraid of it.
Hey Greg! Just here with a few questions
1) Are the YJ comics more of a way to explain the events during/in between the shows to the viewers. Things that may not have been mentioned or clear enough. OR would you say they serve as more of a way to get information and story lines out there in order to base future episodes off of them? maybe both? just curious.
2) Do you ever get annoyed by the questions, responses and posts that fans put out there? ex. heated (and occasionally baseless) fan pairing wars, "hating" on particular characters, ect.
3) this may seem silly to ask, but do you have a favorite character amongst the group? or one that you find the most interesting
4) It is always fun to guess at new characters and appearances on the show, but do you ever worry that too big of a group will take away from the development of each individual character?
1. Either, both, neither. Mostly, it's just another outlet for us to tell stories set in this universe with these characters.
2. You're new here, aren't you?
3. ASKED AND ANSWERED.
4. Of course, but we have to be true to the universe we're developing. Believe me, there were at least SEVEN more MAJOR characters that we wanted to add to Season Two that will NOT be appearing at all on the television series because there just wasn't any room for them. So they'll have to be saved for the comic book and/or a potential Season Three (if there is one).
hey Greg!
i think its great that you let fans ask questions, especially since you must get frustrated when fans go and ask the same questions over and over, so i checked and double checked the archives before asking this, but if its a repeat, i apologize.
1)in many comic books, more adult like topics are discussed. (ie: child abuse, drug abuse, pregnancy)and i know you have cleared the subject of Wally's child abuse multiple times, but are such topics allowed to be discussed at such a children oriented network?
2) I've heard of other comics books and shows that the public in that such universe is convinced that superheroes don't have secret identities, is that true of earth-16?
3)in the most recent episode, it was shown captain marvel saying Shazam! and transferring to the adult universe, and rescuing his pilot. i assume that the lightning that struck him destroyed the plane, but did the lightning not affect Amber, or did she somehow fall out of the plane beforehand?
thanks for taking the time to answer these :)
1. It depends how they're handled.
2. Some characters have secret identities; some do not.
3. The magic lightning had NO effect on the plane. On the adult dimension, the plane was back in its hangar in Fawcett City. In the kid dimension, the pilotless plane eventually crashed into the ocean. This question has already been ASKED AND ANSWERED. For a fuller response, check the archives.
Hey, Mr. Greg Weisman,
I made a mistake on my last posting. That last one was actually my sixth posting, not my fifth. The one Iâm doing now is my seventh posting.
Iâve got a quick interesting question I need to ask you. Has a prequel movie (which would probably focus on the Justice League, with the sidekicks in a minor role) ever been considered by your team to help lead into the beginning of the events of Season One, or to help connect the plot elements of Seasons One and Two?
Thanks for taking the time to read this question. Hope to find out how you will respond. Oh, I almost forgot, on my fifth posting, the one I did last night with the list of names, Wizardâs first name was misspelled. I meant to say William, not Willaim.
No, it hasn't been discussed. I'd love to, of course, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Hi Question about Kid Flash and Artemis:
What were they doing together that they walked in together in the beginning of "Revelation"?
Nothing significant. For all we know, they weren't together and simply entered the hallway at the same time.
1. Going off from what someone previously asked, can Artemis speak as many languages as her father and sister?
2. I was just wondering, do you think that in general Artemis is confident in most social situations, or more shy/awkward?
3. How would you describe Artemis' relationship with Roy presently?
4. Who is Artemis' closest to on the team?
1. <shrug>
2. I think she actively PROJECTS confidence, which is not the same thing as having it. (Same with Wally, by the way. It's one of the things I see them having in common.)
3. With Roy? Mostly non-existent. That might change now, after the revelations of "Usual Suspects" and "Auld Acquaintances" but I can't talk about that now, as it's a SPOILER.
4. Zatanna, probably. Though I think she's close to M'gann and Robin and Aqualad - and even to Wally in their strange way. This is NOT meant to imply that she gets along badly with Superboy and/or Rocket, but I don't think they're as close.
The entire team (except Artemis)saw how Wally reacted to Artemis' death in the simulation in "Failsafe." It would be apparent to all of them that Wally wouldn't have reacted that way unless he had very strong feelings for Artemis. Black Canary found out about it. So, isn't it reasonable to think that someone on the team told Artemis about Wally's reaction to her death and that Artemis would realize how Wally feels about her?
It's not reasonable, but I don't see it as an absolute either. Nevertheless, it wouldn't surprise me if M'gann hinted at it to Artemis. My gut is that it would only tend to confuse and trouble Artemis MORE not less.
If you could, would you have put your Spectacular Spider man on the team?
I'm afraid that kind of hypothetical just has no meaning to me.
Why does Robin have two different kinds of batarangs? One kind is similar to Batman's while the other is more circular. Is there a reason for this?
Different tools for different tasks.
Were the alien ships in Failsafe based on any alien race in the comic? If so who were they?
They were not.
1. What was the gem in Misplaced called?
2. Where did Ultra Humanite get his scar across his mouth?
3. Do you know why Young Justice Invasion only has 20 episodes instead of 26?
1. Ambre Jeune Perdu.
2. It came with the body. (For more on this, see issue #19 of our companion comic book.)
3. That's how many Cartoon Network ordered.
Hey Greg!
I recently saw this line from an interview with Steven Bochco in the early 80's, talking about Hill Street Blues (which currently has its first two-and-a-half seasons on Hulu Plus, by the way):
"Maybe the biggest problem with Hill Street, in terms of popular success, is that it is a show that demands to be watched. And most people do not watch television. They simply are in its presence."
I love that quote. What an insightful way to encapsulate about what was essential and great about Hill Street Blues, without going into all the details of what made it so outstanding. Just leave at this: unlike nearly anything before it, in many ways it was a show that demanded to be watched. I think that characteristic also applies to Gargoyles as well, no doubt due to the major influence Hill Street Blues had on the show (as you've often mentioned).
Nowadays, that quality, of being a show that "demands to be watched," is characteristic of so many excellent shows that appear on HBO, Showtime or AMC (before hitting DVD boxsets and iTunes), places where popular success isn't the one and only yardstick. And again and again, we've seen how this kind of series can flourish in the atmosphere of creative freedom offered by these outlets.
Can viewers hope that someday soon, that kind of environment will produce an animated serial drama that has the same level of quality, complexity and acclaim as these channels' current headline series? If so, what might it take for that to happen?
Hey, Zach. Long time no see. I'd heard that quotation about Hill Street before, and couldn't agree more.
I appreciate you think Gargoyles falls in the same category. It's flattering and certainly what we strived for. I don't pretend that we were as good as Hill Street Blues, but no one can accuse us of not going for it.
As to your question, I like to think that W.I.T.C.H., Spectacular Spider-Man, Young Justice and Young Justice: Invasion also qualify. At least at Gargoyles' level. So I think it's already possible. But that's just my - apparently not so - humble opinion.
I know this is all about the young heroes but will Batman and Wonder Woman have any interaction?
By now, hopefully, you've seen that they already have. And if it weren't for that fact, my response would have been SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT. So why clutter the queue with this kind of question?
I don't mean to pick on you, Caterina, but I'm trying to EDUCATE Ask Greg posters as to what MAKES SENSE to post.
Does Zatanna like Robin the way he likes her? Because she was ok with his flirting but I don't see a big connection with them.
Then you're not looking very hard.
I didn't mean to disrespect Aquaman in my last post. I didn't mean that he was less of an effective hero it is just refreshing that the other members of the league are not so overpowered that they make him look weak in comparison. I would also like to thank you for having YJ updates. It is a very interesting way for fans to look at the production process of animation so keep it up!
Thanks.
1. In Misplaced I noticed that Wotan's magic was red when it was orange in Revelation. Not to nitpick but was he harnessing the power of chaos instead of the magic he normally uses?
2. When Martian Manhunter uses telekinesis to enhance his strength is he the same level as some of the heavy hitters of the league or is he closer to Aquaman's strength level? I don't like to ask who is stronger then who I am just trying to find out what is Aquaman's combat prowess in the league is.
3. What were the Pentagram symbols in Misplaced based on?
1. Don't ask the color deficient guy.
2. Combat prowess and raw strength are two different things. Superman's the strongest of the Leaguers. Icon, Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are up there. Aquaman and a telekinetically enhanced Martian Manhunter and a Quantum-energized Captain Atom are close. I'd put Red Tornado, Hawkman and Hawkwoman just behind them. Neither Flash nor Plastic Man nor Zatanna nor Atom have super-strength, but their powers can sometimes give them more oomph. At the "bottom" are folks like Batman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Black Lightning, Rocket, though of course, they're all way stronger because of their training than the average human being. And of course, you have the Green Lanterns, who can use willpower and rings to mimic strength too - and maybe even top Superman when they're on their game. Same - in his own way - with Doctor Fate. I think that covers the whole League.
3. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
I am really off my game in asking questions or writing them anyway. Why is it that when Wotan casts magic some of it is nonverbal and other times he uses Latin to cast them?(SUCCESS!) For example in Revelation he summons lightning against the team without speaking, but when he fights Doctor Fate he uses several incantations.
Actually, Wotan did speak to summon the lightning in Revelations, using the Archmage's old spell, in fact.
But in any case, Wotan has many tools in his toolbox.
Hey,
Just wanted to put it out there. I thought it interesting that although Zatanna and Zatara are probably Catholic, they practice magic. If you want to get technical, the Catholic Church is against the use of magic. (I am Catholic)
But I know this is a fictional story, so the rules can probably be bent a bit :)
Keep up the good work! Love the series!
I know a LOT of Catholics who consider themselves Catholic but don't follow EVERY tenant of the religion. (For that matter, I'm a Jew that doesn't follow many tenants of MY religion.) It doesn't have to be a 'fictional story' for that.
Even though their not Dating dose Wonder Woman has feeling for Batman
It depends what kind of feelings you're talking about.
How old is Dr. Serling Roquette?
Serling is 22 as of the end of Season One.
First, I just have to say this is most definitely the best DCAU show since Justice League Unlimited finished. There's something in it for everybody; there's just two questions I've got for you...
1) Is Wally eventually going to learn to be more imaginative with his powers? When they amount to being able to "Run really, really fast", it's really easy for him to turn into just another comic relief.
On another note, I really like what you're doing so far with Superman being extremely awkward around Superboy and so far being a terrible role model... it kind-of really fits him, IMO. And, on a related note to that, my second question: Are we ever going to see the Kents in this show?
Technically, we're not part of what most fans consider the DCAU, but thanks.
1. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
What is the color of Rocket's powers? Is it blue or pink? Cause in Revelation it was pink and misplaced it was blue. I know weird question
I don't know. I myself am Red-Green color deficient, so I'm not the best person to answer color questions.
Do Kid Flash and Robin hang out together as Wally and Dick, seeing as they are BF's?
Sometimes.
Great show. Please keep up the excellent work.
YJ questions
Did Martian Manhunter ever assume detective John Jones identity?
Can Aqualad control the temperature of his water power?
How did Bibbo get a diner? Is this from the comics?
Other than the Secret Society, did Spider-Man's Sinister Six inspire The Light?
1. Uh, yeah. If you've been watching, you've seen John Jones already in "Targets".
2. I doubt it.
3. On Earth-16 he owns a diner.
4. Not at all. The Sinister Six is an attack squad. The Light is the polar opposite of that.
1)How do feel abou batman and wonder woman being a couple? And about WW and superman?
2)Any chance of a TV movie for YJ?
1. It all depends on how one develops the characters, but I'm not one of those guys that feels like either couple is an absolute must-see. Nor am I the type to think either is anathema.
2. No one's raised it over here.
How did you cast Alyson Stoner as Barbara Gordon?
How? Uh, Jamie Thomason and/or his talent coordinator called her agent, I assume. If you're asking how did we DECIDE to cast her as Barbara...?
I'm not sure I remember, but there were a handful of actresses who auditioned for Miss Martian (including Lacey, Mae and maybe Alyson) who didn't seem quite right for M'gann, but who were really good nevertheless and whom we kept in mind for future rolls.
If I found out about leaks of a show being posted on youtube, is there anyone I could tell about it? I just feel gross knowing I'm part of a fandom that would do things like that.
There's really nothing to be done, I'm afraid.
1) Could you please tell me the blood type of every DC character that has appeared on the show and arrange the list by astrological sign and birth date excluding those characters who were born in a leap year?
2) What happens next?
Greg Weisman says:
"I haven't tracked this with the kind of specificity you're asking for."
[Response recorded on April 13, 2012.]
Greg Weisman says:
SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
I was just wondering has Chad Lowe replaced Rob Lowe as the voice of Captain Marvel or will Rob Lowe return in the future to voice the character? Was there a reason for the switch in the first place?
Greg Weisman says:
"Rob was no longer available, and Chad - with Rob's blessing - kindly stepped in."
