1. What happened to Garfield's dad?
2. You mentioned in an earlier reply that Gar took his mother's maiden name. Would his dad's name still be Mark Logan?
1. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
2. That would be some coincidence, huh?
What city does Wonder Girl live in?
Washington D.C.
I have one other question and it's a fun one.
Do you see any of the team or Justice League as being "serious" readers? If so, which writers do they like?
By "serious" I mean someone who will crack the classics like Melville, Milton, or Homer, or someone who likes serious fiction like... Toni Morrison or Gabriel Marquez.
P.S.
If people can ask about Catherine Cobert's age then I can certainly ask about this!
Yes, you can. But the difference is that the age questions are objective. I've either done the math or I haven't. What you're asking for is incredibly subjective. I take the question seriously enough that I don't want to just toss out an answer without putting real thought into it. And so it would potentially take hours to answer it for the dozens of characters we have on the series. And I'm just not prepared to do that right now.
But the short answer is yes.
Hi Greg,
I'd like to offer an observation. Every one of the original team has played some role in the traumatic events of Darkest and Before the Dawn - even Wally and Connor who permitted these events to occur by staying silent. I don't see what Wally could have done, but Connor could have spoken up about M'Gann's activities, but he didn't.
I have not seen many viewers respond to Beast Boy, Impulse, and Blue Beetle being drugged, assaulted, kidnapped, and tortured. If I was Gar, Bart, or Jaime, I'd be hurt, humiliated, and beyond furious with Nightwing and the senior class. It's one thing to expect Justice Leaguers to roll with the punches, but Beast Boy is barely a teenager.
I understand that because of the genre you feel the need to keep things moving. Unfortunately, that means certain things get glossed over. (For example, I would have loved to have watched Wally and Artemis's first date.) Personally, I'm willing to give Artemis and Kaldur a pass because they have suffered so much. But, I hope that when the smoke clears, the team will hold Nightwing accountable for his actions
You're assuming that when the smoke clears, that anyone's still alive to hold Nightwing accountable. Or that Nightwing's still alive to be held.
How old was Jason Todd in the hologram/picture that was shown in Depths?
Why did you decided to include Jason in Young Justice instead of skipping over him like in Batman the animated series?
1. Not sure about the exact date on the hologram.
2. We're not basing our decisions on OTHER adaptations.
1. How old is Brucely?
2. I think he was confirmed to be Artemis' dog - did she pick him out or was he a gift from Wally?
3. Has Brucely met other members of the Team?
1. I think you'd need to ask Stephanie.
2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
3. I'm sure he has.
Hi Greg, I have a question that's been plaguing me and I would love if you could shed some light:
You've previously said that Beast Boy needs to touch or see an animal in order to become it [ergo why he can't become a dinosaur, etc]. So my question is, how does he turn into that monkey-human hybrid? From what I can tell it's not a real animal, and seeing that he can turn into a human, and therefore it's not this form he has no control over, how does he transform into that hybrid?
Thanks!
He evolved it himself.
Hey, Greg. Thanks for answering all our insane questions.
Thinking specifically about Young Justice, were there any characters that you meant to be... not very likeable? I mean, obviously the villains are the ones we love to hate, but of the Team or JLA? Like, hypothetically, did you (or anyone else) ever say, 'Ya know what? Lets make [insert character's name here] a complete jerk.'
I'm not looking for validation for people to hate on any one character. I'm just womdering if it was ever part of the thought process in the show.
Thanks a lot!
Not unlikeable, no, but there were characters that we wanted NOT to mesh with the others quite so well. We wanted things like anger-management issues, jealousy issues, insecurity issues, etc. There are, I believe, non-positive qualities to nearly every major character on the show. Hopefully, the audience finds the characters real, and perhaps likes them more for their faults...
1) Did Artemis' poor relationship with her father make her leery of men at all? If so, did this cause her to have a difficult time trusting Wally early in their relationship and/or cause any strain in their relationship early on?
2) You stated that they had ups and downs during their relationship over the 5 year gap. Could you specify a bit? Were there large confrontations or temporary breakups? Or were they just typically small arguments, petty jealousy and/or similar situations?
3) Do Wally's parents know of Artemis' background and are they at all bothered by the fact that she comes from a criminal family?
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these!
1. Probably.
1a. Probably.
2. I could, but I'm not going to. It's a SPOILER REQUEST.
3. Yes.
3a. Not particularly.
Young Justice: Invasion is the only comic series I've bought regularly (came close with the Jaime/Blue Beetle one couple of years ago). Like the TV series it's got a great mix of characters and tells a bunch of engaging stories at an all ages level. I love being able to read a series and share it with my younger brother (So many of the 'normal' series are intensely violent and feature sexual assault so often...).
So, thank you and your staff for making this series so great! It's always sold out at our local store. I'm sorry to hear that it's ending in two months.
What are your thoughts on how to keep comics relevant and get them to people, particularly younger crowds? Are downloads making a difference? Would releasing more series as longer graphic novels twice a year rather than shorter monthlies help? What about the content? Thanks for your time!
I don't claim to be an expert on these topics. Generally, I just write the kind of stories that _I_ would like to read.
Why Quit Kid Flash the Hero life
RESPONSE SPOILER. COMMENT NO.
Issue 23 was awesome! I really liked the new depth that was giving to La'gann's and M'gann's relationship
Thanks.
Why doesn't Superboy have any mirrors?
He doesn't want any.
Just dropping by to say that the latest comic issue was aweseome. It was nice to see Tim again. And the character development with La'gaan and M'gann in the bioship had me squealing like a mad pig- and I got a big laugh out of it afterwards when my friends reacted to the scene by basically saying "Wait, he's actually capable of not being a jerk?". I hope to see more of such development in the show itself. And Barbara... you've just reminded me why I love the character so much. Great job.
Thanks. I'm really quite proud of the Players arc in the comic. And Chris and Zac's work has just been stellar.
Wasn't it a bit hypocritical of M'gann to talk about not "focusing on parties" when she was going to a bridal shower, of all things?
It's called irony.
1. Before Impulse left, it was raining ash, but after he left, it wasn't raining ash, and Happy Harbor looked slightly larger. Was this intentional?
2. I know Crash and Mode are Reach terms, but what do they mean? Like, is Crash synonymous to Cool, and Mode/moded similar to Defeated?
1. Happy Harbor looks larger? I didn't notice that at all. As for the rest of your question, it's a SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
2. ASKED AND ANSWERED - in both the show and here at ASK GREG.
Hey Greg!
I started watching Young Justice this summer and can't get enough of it! I've never had cable tv, so I don't watch many shows, but this is the first show that I've been able to say I keep up with regularly. I particularly love the spinoff series, Black Manta's Celebrity Hot tub, and think that CN really should give it another chance. I hope that maybe someday fans will be able to rejoice upon seeing the likes of Lex Luthor, The Joker, or Queen Bee enter that fabled hot tub.
A few questions:
1. Is Beast Boy's hair black or green? The reason I ask is because in the show, it's black, but in the comics and promotional material, it's a slightly darker shade of green than his skin.
2. If Mrs. Martian didn't get woken up by Martian Manhunter in Failsafe, and died by the same beams the other members "died" from, would she herself slip into a coma?
3. I hope I'm not asking something with an obvious answer, but what was Artemis doing during Image? I was rewatching it the other day and noticed she didn't go with the team to Qurac.
4. It's totally fine if this isn't answered, I didn't exactly expect it to, but what's Gar's birthday? Dc has never given him a birth date in the comics and I was just curious. Hope it isn't a spoiler request.
1. I think it's dark green in all of the above.
2. We'll never know.
3. Does it matter? Anyway, hopefully I'll get to tell that story some day.
4. I generally don't give characters birthdates unless it matters in a specific story.
Hi, Greg. I have some questions.
1. Why was Icon erased from the cover and/or erased from the Issues 21 and 23?
1a. You said it wasn't you who erased him. Who was it, and why?
2. Are Icon and Rocket not going to be in the show anymore?
1. I honestly don't know. I was not given an explanation.
1a. The folks at DC.
1b. ASKED AND ANSWERED. (You know, up in question one. Seriously, why are you asking me the same question twice in the same post?)
2. They are and will continue to be in the television series.
1. How old is Catherine Cobert?
2. When was the android T. O. Morrow created?
3. How old is Lucius Fox?
4. How old is Perry White?
5. How old is Kevin Blankly?
1. At the end of Season One, she was 28.
2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
3. At the end of Season One, he was 52.
4. Don't know yet.
5. More dead than old.
I just wanna let you and BV know that I'm totally in love you YJ. The hiatus are like being on redrawls and watching reruns is like feeding on scraps from the bin. I ACHE with these longs waits and I can tell you right now I'm going to CRY if yj gets cancelled. Is there still hope?
Stay strong. We're back January 5th.
Why is Brainiac called the Collector of Worlds and not Brainiac?
Are you asking for an In-Universe answer or a behind-the-scenes answer?
What's the best way to support Young Justice, you ask?
BUY THE MERCHANDISE!!! That's right, buy our YJ companion comic (in electronic or print editions). (The advantage there is that you get the bonus of more story and character!)
And buy the Young Justice T-Shirt, currently being offered for sale by Hot Topic:
I've already purchased three myself. (That's right; I don't get 'em for free.) One for me, and one each for my genomorphs. So I've done my part!! Have you done yours?
OH, AND HELP SPREAD THE WORD!!!!
Well, I've finally caught up and cleaned out the ASK GREG queue. We'll plan to reopen the site- at least briefly - when Young Justice: Invasion #23 hits the stands later this month. Then again, when DC Nation starts up with new Young Justice: Invasion episodes on January 5th, 2013.
I'm looking forward to reading your responses to the new issues and episodes - and to Black Manta's Celebrity Hot Tub. (If there seems to be a demand, I might be tempted to write more of the latter for this site.)
But right now... I'm going to take a short break.
Who were the two characters you wanted to include in the bridal shower scene in Satisfaction?
SPOILER REQUEST. NO RESPONSE.
When Kid Flash, or Flash are running places, how do they know if they are going in the right direction? When Impulse was running across states, how would he know what state he's in? Like right now if someone told me to run to New York, New York, and I know it's South, & 6 hours by car, Maybe I could find it, cuz it's so iconic, and…a straight line from where I am. But if I had to find the Yukon, (In Canada…It's hard enough to find on a map) or North Carolina, I wouldn't. So how do they know where they are going without directions/GPS. Have they memorized the layout of the whole country? Stop & read signs? Do they have to take main roads to find where they want to go?
-Can Wally run across water?
- Could he do it carrying someone, or would their ears explode?
- Can Superman run across water?
1. Yes to all of the above, probably.
2. If he's built up a big enough head of steam.
3. I would think so.
4. Run? No. But he can fly across it.
Hello Greg.
I've noticed from both your work in Gargoyles, & Young justice that it seems very hard to affect the future by changing the past. It would seem that time travel can affect events, but not people? Like When Goliath went back in time and tried to talk with Demona, but when she woke up in their own timeline, was unchanged. Same with Impulse, he tried/continues to try to change his future, but somehow Nate still remembers what it was like before?
- Would everyone remember the difference in Barts timeline?
- How does Nate remember Bart, if they both said he would never be back to his time line, & so it stuck in the past?...So would then have never met ?
1. No.
2. ASKED AND ANSWERED.
Hello!
Logically Artemis would have had to begin training, or step it up before her death in March.
- How long did she have to decide, & then begin training again?
- When she did decide to go undercover, how/why did she decide on her new weapons? She couldn't just stick to archery, that's a given. So what make her pick her equipment?
-Did she train with Wally, or Dick before their façade took place?
-How many days (weeks?) did Artemis wait before she told Wally?
- What if she said no?
-What month is Artemis's Birthday?
1. You're assuming she EVER stopped training.
2. She's proficient in all the weapons that Tigress uses.
3. To a certain extent, although their regimens are very different.
4. I assume she's trained with Dick on and off for years, but again, see the answer to question one.
5. Tell him what?
6. I'm lost. No to what?
7. I haven't decided. Maybe she should be a Sagittarius.
has robin ever kissed Zatanna well i mean he leaned in first? because we have scene zatanna kiss robin 3 times, but not vice versa.
Over the years? Yes.
Is Happy Harbor's harbor(or haven) an artificicial one or a natural one? I also ask the same question about Bludhaven's harbor as well.
P.s If you don't know. Then I don't mind.
P.p.s Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to answer my "lucky stiff" question.
1. Yes.
1a. I assume so, but I don't know.
Stanford is one of the most expensive universities in the country. How are Wally and Artemis paying for it plus their apartment?
Stanford also offers needs-blind admission. If you can get in, they'll figure out financial aid for you after the fact.
Assuming Sportsmaster knew about about Wally and Artemis's relationship judging from the scene at the cemetery in "Satisfaction," would you mind telling us how he heard about it and how he feels about it?
1. Yes, I mind. Sorry.
2. I think you can guess.
After season one, I figured Roy's serious personality might have been influenced by his programming. After seeing the original Roy, it is clear Roy has always been like that. Since Jim Harper is also a clone of the original Roy, my first question is this:
1) What is the reason for the personality difference between The two Roys and Jim Harper?
2) Was Jim Harper programmed to be a different hero?
3) In Season one, Jim explained to Superboy that he was Roy's uncle. It seems that this was programmed into him. Was this programmed into Red Arrow? In other words, did Roy know about his "relation" to Jim?
4) If Jim Harper were to pick up a bow and arrow, would he be a good archer?
5) Was Aqualad the only person on the Team who would know where Roy was hiding in the final episode of Season one?
1. You see Roy after waking up from an eight year deep-freeze to find his arm amputated and a clone has taken over his life, and you think that gives you some indication of what he was like personality-wise back in the day? Seriously?
2. Well... yeah... (Is this a trick question?)
3. Yes.
4. Not without any training at all.
5. Do you mean before Aqualad found him there or after?
1) How did Aquaman find out about Kaldur's parentage?
2) How old was Kaldur when Calvin Durham assumed the role of his father? Assuming, of course, Aqualad was born.
3) When did Black Manta assume his villainous role? (This is like asking when did Clark Kent become Superman)
4) Do Black Manta's henchmen know his secret identity?
5) Does the Light know his secret identity?
1. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
3. IS it like asking that? I'm not sure I agree.
4. What secret identity?
5. See above.
1) What is Black Manta's civilian name?
2) What is the reason for his animosity towards Aquaman?
3) Is there a reason why you gave Black Manta a sophisticated persona? He strikes me as a high class villain, like Luthor. In the comics, he just seems like an angry guy.
4) I gotta admit, Black Manta has a handsome face. Who takes credit for this design?
5) How close were Black Manta and Calvin Durham before Durham's defection?
1. I don't know.
2. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
3. We played him the way he made sense to us to play him.
4. Phil Bourassa.
5. Close.
How old is the kid that resembles Stephanie Brown and the kid that looks like Virgil Hawkins in Before the Dawn?
I'm not sure who you're referring to. Someone who 'resembles Stephanie Brown'? Do you mean Stephanie Brown? If so, Stephanie Brown is twelve at the START of Season Two. I don't know how old she is by the time we introduced her: twelve or thirteen.
As for 'the kid that looks like Virgil Hawkins in Before the Dawn', I'm not sure why you think I'd have calculated an age for an incidental character just because he happens to look like someone from a previous cartoon show.
sorry about my earlier confusing question, if you remember it.
i checked the unanwered questions and the answered questions, and i can't believe no one has asked this yet.
1)Does anyone besides Roy, Jade, and Lian to an extent know of Roy and Jade's marriage? (I'm ask about if they know about Lian, but that seems too spoil alert - ish
2) Does Sportsmaster know that Roy is Lian's father?
3) When Roy Harper's parents died, why did he live with his uncle?
I'm really sorry if you already seen these questions, but i looked at the unanswered questions and the answered question, using any keywords that could lead up to them, and found that no questions were close to mine
1. Yes.
2. Yes.
3. Uncle?
How old was Jason Todd when he died?
SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
Dear Greg,
First, let me start off by saying that I think Young Justice is one of the best cartoons currently out there. It's so mature and epic and the animation and character design are amazing. I really wish CN would realize what a gem they've got and would start promoting the hell out of it (hm…maybe I should put that on my Christmas list).
For research purposes, I have two questions:
1.Did Young Justice team members who have homes outside of Mount Justice, like Dick, Wally and Artemis, have personal living quarters at Mount Justice as well?
2.Has Nightwing surpassed Black Canary in terms of fighting skills?
Thanks in advance!
1. They had places they could crash, and they kept changes of clothes there.
2. See, now, the Hulk is more powerful because the madder he gets, the stronger he gets. But the Thing can still beat him if he keeps his wits about him.
Dear Greg,
While I lament the fact that we're not going to see more of the delightful young Robin you created in YJ season 1 (because in my humble opinion, he's the best cartoon rendition of Dick Grayson's Robin ever: such an amazing character design, awesome personality and skills and perfect voice actor), I love seeing your version of Nightwing in Young Justice: Invasion. Again, awesome character design there and Jesse McCartney does a great job voicing him. Dick Grayson's obviously grown and matured, but there are still shades of season one's Dick Grayson that I really enjoy seeing. Though he certainly does seem to be becoming more like Batman in terms of the decisions and sacrifices he makes, I like that his leadership style seems more gentle and is geared towards positive reinforcement. He cares about his team and shows it.
Anyway, my question:
As team leader, why doesn't Nightwing go on so many missions anymore? I'm asking because Aqualad, when he was team leader in the first season, accompanied the Team on most missions, but Nightwing doesn't seem to based on what he said in Depths: "After a year of leading this team, I'm peckish for a little action". Is it because the Team's grown so big that most of the time he has to stay behind to coordinate? Because Mal seemed to be doing a good job of that in ep 201 Happy New Year... I'm just wondering because Dick Grayson's my favorite character and I'd love to see more of him. I hope we'll get to see more of Nightwing in action in the second half of the season.
Thanks for putting so much time and effort into interacting with fans!
Can't wait till January! ;)
There's a lot going on. As you've seen he goes on missions fairly often, but sometimes he needs to stay behind. And he rarely goes on 'routine' missions. But you should also keep in mind, that he obviously had ulterior motives for wanting to go on the Cape Canaveral mission - motives that he couldn't reveal, and so had to use misdirection to explain why he was going.
I'd like to ask a few YJ questions that I really hope don't come across the wrong way. They're just a few things I've noticed that may be errors/unclear (or just me being oblivious). Obviously I love the show and the comics, and think you and your team do a great job.
1) In "Bereft", Robin says the soldiers are of the Bialyan Republican Army, but Bialya is a monarchy. Is that an error or was Bialya formerly a republic (or something even more complicated)?
2) In "Common Denominators", after the Cultists abducted Dr. Burr, hitting Robin in the process, Batman asks Robin if he's okay. Robin responds "Feeling the aster. But fine." Shouldn't that be "Not feeling the aster. But fine." or am I misinterpreting 'aster'?
In "Depths", in the scene in the Cave at the end, we hear crying-in particular it sounds to me like male and female crying. Though it looks to me as though Raquel, and perhaps Karen, were crying none of the male characters appeared to be.
3a) Who was crying?
3b) In general, how do you write scenes like this, where you have a number of characters but only a few are seen up close and/or have lines? Does the script detail the reactions for each or is there just a general description of the group's reaction and the details are left to storyboarding/animation?
Can't wait for #23 and the return of the show. Thanks for your time.
1. Bialya is - in theory - a constitutional monarchy, with a democratically elected REPRESENTATIVE government. (Though in practice, it's a dictatorship.) Because of this, propaganda is used throughout Bialyan society, and names don't necessarily reflect truth.
2. No, you're right. That's an error. Robin must have been more addled than he realized.
3a. I think only M'gann is crying out loud. At least that's how it is in the script (and in my memory). But I don't have the finished episode handy to check.
3b. There's no set rule.
Why it took 5 years to find what happen in the missing 16 hours?
Why did it take 116 years to fight the Hundred Years' War?
Because that's how long it took.
Was there a time when Karen was keeping her Bumblebee alter-ego a secret from Mal? After all, their Cave designations seem to suggest that there was a bit of a gap between her joining and him getting involved with the Team.
SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
But since their designations are in different categories, I don't think they "suggest" anything one way or another.
Does Beast Boy get on all right with Lagoon Boy? Gar seemed to want Conner and M'gann to get back together in "Earthlings", so I'm thinking that he doesn't like L'gaan...
They get along all right, but Gar is in need of consistency in his life. When he met M'gann and Conner they were a couple, so he's still rooting for them.
Why was Rocket omitted from issues #21 and #22 of the companion comic when she had been shown with Zatanna in issue #20, who appeared alongside her in that issue?
I have no comment at this time. Mostly because I honestly don't know why.
1) Did Batgirl know Jason Todd before he died?
2) Did Batgirl know any of the other three mystery Team members from the time skip?
1. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
2. I'm not sure who you're defining as "mystery" and who you're not.
Is Superboy's birthday really the 21st of March or does he just pretend it is?
It is.
In season 1, M'gann was 48 years old but her age in human biology was 16. What is her age in human biology in season 2?
About 18, give or take.
Hi Greg,
I'm a big fan of the show and I had a brief question that hopefully does not delve into spoilers.
In the Mount Justice memorial grotto, is there any pattern to the size and location of the holograms relative to each other?
More specifically, are the holograms placed in the order they died? I'm not asking when anyone actually died, if that helps.
Thanks for your time!
No and no.
The sizes are all the same relatively, although perspective (and maybe some flawed animation) may occasionally make it look otherwise.
I've got a few questions... hope you don't mind.
1. In the episode Before The Dawn, you know the scene where Batgirl passes Bumblebee to Nightwing and said that he needed to make a fast exit? Yeah, is that really happening in the comics? Cause if it did, I'd like to read the issue.
2. When did Miss Martian started making people into catatonic states? I'm curious.
3. In the episode Homefront in season 1, was Barbara jealous? At least a little spark of Dick/Babs.
Oh, and representing some other authors and myself from FanFiction.Net who likes Nightwing and Batgirl, we are very thrilled that you made Batgirl hold Nightwing's hand. Just that scene, and we're jumping.
1. I don't know what you mean. It happened on screen. Obviously, you saw it. So...
2. On screen, during Season One.
3. Yes.
4. I honestly don't know what scene you're referring to.
Hi, I'd like to ask a few Wolf related questions, if I may.
In the wild gray wolves live for around 8-13 years (a bit more in captivity). Since Wolf appeared to be the leader of his pack in "Alpha Male" (the title being a hint!), that would suggest he was a fully grown adult (3+ years) at the time. That would mean Wolf would be physically quite old by Season Two, but he doesn't appear to have aged.
1) How old is Wolf?
2a) Does Wolf not show his age and/or have an extended lifespan as a result of the Brain's experiments on him?
2b) If yes, is the same true of humans or other animals enhanced with Kobra-Venom?
In this interview (http://www.aquamanshrine.com/2012/09/aquaman-shrine-interview-with-greg.html) you mentioned that Wolf was Earth-16's version of Krypto, and that you considered naming him Krypto. That would seem to imply there is no "real" Kryptonian Krypto. But in "Alpha Male", when KF suggested that name, M'gann said it was taken.
3) Is there a Krypto on Earth-16? If not, what was M'gann referring to?
4) Was Wolf linked into the telepathic simulation in "Failsafe", or was he just in the room?
Thanks for your time.
1. Well, by your own calculations, he's at least eight or nine - assuming we buy into your calculations.
2a. We'll have to wait and see.
2b. We'll have to wait and see.
3. SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.
3a. She didn't SAY it was taken, she ASKED if it was taken.
4. He was not linked.
