Todd>> Aahh... all right, then. In that case, yes, I think that the series would have been better off to have ended on "Hunter's Moon." Great cliffhangers to go out on, good storytelling and animation to bracket the series (the other end being "Awakening").
"Angels in the Night"... I don't know how those people thought that *that* would be a good way to close the series. I suppose that there is no easy way to close a series as complex as Gargoyles, but at least "Hunter's Moon" conclusively ends a chapter (to take off of Brooklyn) believably. "Angels in the Night" was like closing a steel trap on the series - it finished it off all right... very painfully.
And no need to apologize, Todd - it's just misinterpretation, and on my part. ;)

ALEX GARG - I'm sorry about having used the words "high note" for "Hunter's Moon", since it's clear that they were misleading. I agree that things aren't that great for the gargoyles by the end. Let me rephrase my meaning a little, to clear up the misconception that I'd given rise to.
What I meant by "high note" was the quality of "Hunter's Moon" in terms of storytelling, as a very effective and dramatic three-parter. And it seems even more that way by contrast to the mediocrity of the bulk of the Goliath Chronicles episodes, including "Angels in the Night".
What I was really trying to say (and I could have done so a little better) was - would it have been better for "Gargoyles" to have ended with a great episode like "Hunter's Moon", or a so-so episode like "Angels in the Night"? I'm sorry if I gave you the wrong impression, Alex.

Well....I finished my second video today, but I'm not as excited about this one. Demona's Rage starts good and gets better as the video goes on. This one starts good and kinda lags in the second half. The beginning is good, the middle is good, but the last half is just ok (in my view anyway). I may tweak it some more later on. Still have a couple more ideas for more videos, but I think I want a funny one next. I've done action, I've done romance (the second one, titled, "Goliath and Elisa" is the romantic one), now I want comedy.
First, though, I want sleep. Siren, I'd like to email you to talk about how I might improve my second video, if I may....what do you think?

TGC vs. "Hunter's Moon">>
Matt: "Blaise's post has really made me wonder if maybe we should all pull out our old tapes of The Goliath Chronicles, blow the dust off them and pop them in the VCR and watch them with a completly open mind and fair judgement."
For the longest time, a friend of mine could not understand why I liked Gargoyles as, in his opinion, it was the worst show he had ever seen. I, of course, was floored by the accusation and wanted to know where he came up with that one. He said he could only remember a few episodes, but after pressing him for details I learned that the only exposure he had to Gargoyles was TGC. So he, having an unbiased opinion when viewing the show, seems to confirm that TGC is just... awful.
Well, okay, maybe one person isn't confirmation, but it's evidence enough for me. I've seen the TGC episodes and, in my opinion, they're horrible. "The Journey" is okay, I can't stand the rest. I hope that if Disney does bring the show back, they 1) have Greg on the team and 2) resume the series from "The Journey."
I like "Hunter's Moon," but I don't think I'd call it the high point of the series. Certainly it was a great note to end the season (and the series) on - excellent cliffhangers; but as I think matt pointed out, it's far from a "high note" in the characters' lives. I think the better-than-normal animation is due to the fact that, as Greg has said, the episode was originally meant to be a straight-to-video deal following "The Reckoning," the supposed-to-be ending of the season, so that somewhat offsets the praise I have for it - it wasn't *supposed* to be an episode [most of the previous assuming my memory is serving me well]. Still, that doesn't suddenly make the animation bad, and I'm glad it turned out to be an episode.
Anyway, my input.
Oh, going back to the mentioned friend of mine - I sent him my episodes of the first two seasons coming up on a year ago to try and change his opinion; he has yet to watch them.

I liked the basic concept of "For It May Come True", but thought that it could have been executed better. I've mentioned this before, but I believe that the premise of Titania's "alternate reality" should have been one where the gargoyle species itself had never existed. It would have fitted in better with Goliath's musings over "Would anyone notice if *we* were to stop?" - my emphasis on "we". (And Goliath wouldn't have wished safety only for himself and not for the rest of the clan.) Also, it would have had an interesting link to the situation in the "real Gargoyles Universe" in the episode, where Castaway and his followers are endangering the entire city to get at the gargoyles to satisfy a personal feud. Some part of Goliath, deep down inside, might be wondering whether New York would have been better off without the gargoyles, if their presence had given rise to all this damage by the Quarrymen (yes, I know, blaming the gargoyles for the Quarrymen is like blaming blacks for the Ku Klux Klan or Jews for the Nazis, but it's easy to forget that if you're in a gloomy frame of mind), and Titania's vision could have, in this case, shown him something of how without the gargoyles, things might really have been worse in New York, and there'd simply be some other menace around in the place of the Quarrymen.
(I might add that Christine Morgan did a rewrite of that story once, which had a particularly funny bit where Owen was describing the humanized Goliath to Xanatos as "one of your workers in Section 7-G".)
BATTLE BEAST - The Quarrymen were an idea of Greg Weisman's and not of the new staff; I think that they'd have worked better if Greg's plans for them had been adhered to by Leward and the rest (such as, not only Castaway being really Jon Canmore in disguise, but also the Illuminati being behind the Quarrymen for their own reasons, and a lot of the Quarrymen being ordinary basically law-abiding citizens who'd joined up because they were afraid of the gargoyles, instead of having them all being thugs and violent criminals.)
Poor Greg had to answer another question today from somebody who apparently mistook "Ask Greg" for an "Ask Jeeves"-type site (the person who asked him about sites to the west and east of Montreal).

My 2 cents on TGC: I saw only a couple of episodes (alas, "The Journey" was not one of them), and agree with the comments here that they were far inferior to the original series in many ways (animation, character and story development, continuity, etc.) Still, I must admit I found the *concept* behind "For It May Come True" interesting (ducks around a corner to hide from flying tomatoes). I know it contradicts the original story (in "Vows," Goliath's actions are crucial to Xanatos getting his fortune and breaking the stone sleep spell), but I found it an amusing variation on the "It's A Wonderful Life" idea (I understand that some would find that another reason to dismiss it; that concept has been used in so many other places).

Matt: "even if they are no longer canon. to the people that matter (Disney) they exist. we may as well know our enemy..."
I don't even think anyone at the head office of Disney even cared about Gargoyles. If they did care and they actually watched Seasons 1 and 2, they would have never made Season 3 on the cheap.
The best message that can be sent about Season 3 is that when Season 1 is realised on DVD Boxset (please let is be unedited and as a decent price; around $40.00), is that we buy it out. It Season 2 is realised (probably broken up into two DVD (26 episode) Boxsets), we buy them out.
But we warned people about how bad Season 3 is to make sure that DVD sales don't reach anywhere near the first two seasons.

I'll not be watching Goliath Chronicles again any time soon. I've suffered through them enough making SVCDs two years ago and DVDs of those episodes this past year. That's enough Chronicles for anyone.....watching "Seeing Isn't Believing" will give you nightmares...mainly of how bad the animation is.. *brrr*
It's done! I finished my video, titled, "Demona's Rage", last night. I look at it and want to add a few things here and there, but, for the most part, it is finished. Since I am using the trial version of Screenblast, I can only render in video for windows format. This make my video a whopping 915mb! I can cut that down to 187mb in MPEG2 format and down to 81mb in MPEG1 format. I'm so excited!!!! I've not been this excited about Gargoyles since I made my first vcd of City of Stone 2 years ago. Yay!!!! :D
Siren> Thank you soo much for answering my questions and for doing the videos in the first place. If I had not viewed them, I know I would not have started work on mine again. Thank you!!!

The definition of "Hunter's Moon" as a "high note" (at least, in my case) is based not on the prospect for the gargoyles so much as on the quality of the writing and storytelling - lots of effective drama, some echoes of "Awakening", etc.
A lot of things bothered me about the Goliath Chronicles, even before I discovered that Greg Weisman had left the series after doing "The Journey" (and I only learned that after I'd seen most of the episodes) - in fact, once I learned that Greg had left, I couldn't help but think that that explained a lot. Some of the show's strongest qualities were gone, such as the feeling of an overall developing story; also, I strongly missed the historical/legendary/literary elements of the first two seasons. Two things stood out to me, in particular:
1. One of the biggest disappointments that I had about "Ransom" was the fact that the mayoral race element turned into a one-shot story. I was expecting (and consequently hoping for) the mayoral race to be an arc - much like Senator Kelly running for President in the first season of the FOX "X-Men" animated series, in fact - and so was disappointed when they arrested Doyle at the end and said nothing more about the upcoming election in the other episodes.
2. While much has been said about the way that Goliath's trial was mishandled (on the grounds that the authorities shouldn't have recognized Goliath as an intelligent being able to stand trial), the part that most galled me when I first saw the episode was the resolution - Goliath conveniently tricking the real thief into confessing over a tape recorder and then playing back his "confession" in the courtroom, equally conveniently managing to avoid replaying his offer to the crook to go into partnership with him. It felt like the writers were taking a desperate "easy way out".
And probably the worst thing about "Angels in the Night" remains its "idiot plot" tone - everybody being so ready to believe Castaway and his followers about the gargoyles blowing up his building without remembering that Castaway's own record (such as the heavy artillery in "For It May Come True") was questionable at best (as one reviewer noted, Margot's willingness to swallow Castaway's story in light of his past actions questioned just how much of a moderate she really was), Castaway being reckless enough to attack the passenger train to get rid of Angela and Bronx, his being aware that the gargoyles protected the innocent, Xanatos being able to tamper with Castaway's trap without Castaway knowing, and Xanatos believing that the gargoyles moving to another city was an option (or that Goliath would ever agree to the move).

Blaise's post has really made me wonder if maybe we should all pull out our old tapes of The Goliath Chronicles, blow the dust off them and pop them in the VCR and watch them with a completly open mind and fair judgement. do we hate TGC because Greg didn't work on them or because the animation got worse or because of dumb changes? maybe we are. of course the entire plot and dialogue of some episodes are unforgivable, and in some episodes certain events push belief even for a sci-fi/fantasy series (the ability to make laser guns is one thing, the ability to make a suit that makes you invisible is another...) and some episodes are just so full of odd errors that they become annoying (particularly animation errors such as size changes from scene to scene). i guess another thing taht bothered me is the abandonment of main story threads, for instance, besides The Journey and a tiny mention in Broadway Goes to Hollywood, there is almost no development of the Braodway-Angela relationship, even Goliath and Elisa seemed to go back to the way they were before the Kiss. i dunno, but sometime soon i'm gonna pull my TGC episodes out and go over them again, it may be painful, but we can't just ignore them, even if they are no longer canon. to the people that matter (Disney) they exist. we may as well know our enemy...

****Blaise walks into the Room.**** No frills tonight--I'm running low on funds (and struggling just to make the rent for next month). Ah, the life of the actor....
Anyway, on with the comments!
BATTLE BEAST> Did you get my e-mail? I sent it last week, but haven't heard anything back yet. (Actually, I'm still kind of surprised I won...).
BETTER SERIES ENDER> Well, if the series had ended with HUNTER'S MOON...I don't want to say I'd have been happy (I wanted to see more, damn it!), but I would have been somewhat content. This episode really had that "open-ended closure" Greg said he wanted with "last episodes" (be it of season, series, or his work on the show). Moreso than even RE-AWAKENING and THE JOURNEY (other episodes Greg intended to have "open-ended closure").
Actually, since Greg seems to have intended THE JOURNEY to work as an ending as well, let me dwell on that a bit. Mostly, it's alright, though it doesn't work as well for me as HUNTER'S MOON for a variety of reasons--most were the result of Greg not being able to be Supervising Producer (Goliath's narration at the beginning, his gliding off at the end) and the new animation studio. But it was still a nice continuation and gave a taste of the way life was going to be like for the characters.
Now as for ANGELS IN THE NIGHT...when it first aired, it was something of a breath of fresh air, actually. The animation was noticeably better than most of TGC (although despite being WD-Japan's, it still seemed different--it had the brighter palette that differentiates TGC from the main series), Xanatos had a bit of the old schemer (sp?) back in him, and Castaway and Goliath finally met face to face. The Beatles reference was kind of fun, too. Of course...after awhile other things grabbed my notice: the contrived nature of the plot, the mischaracterization of Castaway and the Quarrymen, the lost opporunity of revealing Castaway's true identity, the readiness of people (like Margot) to accept the gargoyles, the pat ending, etc.. Oh yeah...AND NO DEMONA!
ANGELS' problems were much the same as the rest of TGC. Though, frankly, we should be grateful for even the version we got as opposed to the version they had originally come up with (I'm still wondering what was supposed to happen to Broadway, Angela, Hudson and Bronx).
TGC IN GENERAL> Actually, this is something that's been knocking around my mind for quite some time. The ways in which TGC is different from the main series.
What made the stories so different? We know that Lewald and Thomson probably didn't have the time to familiarize themselves with the old series, but they had three writers from the old series on various episodes (Adam Gilad on RANSOM, Lydia Marano on RUNAWAYS, Cary Bates on BROADWAY GOES TO HOLLYWOOD and ANGELS IN THE NIGHT). Yet even those episodes seemed different.
And then the animation. Even ignoring the different animation studios and character designers, the color palatte seems so much brighter than the original series. Even on the one done by WD-Japan. Why is that? Did someone ask that the colors of the series be brighter?
And why did they put those narrations at the beginning of each episode? Not that listening to Keith David is a bad thing (it isn't) but was it necessary to have him tell what "today's episode is about"--even when the episode proved somewhat different from his speech (as in RANSOM)? Couldn't that time have been spent in the plot of the episode? Were they put there to lend credence to the subtitle? Okay...but why the subtitle in the first place? Couldn't it have been "GARGOYLES: The Continuing Adventures"?
I apologize...I'm really starting to ramble here. It's just that there are so many changes, especially in the little things, that make me wonder "why?"
Well, enough of my random thoughts. I've still got lots of classifieds and job sites to go through between now and my next visit. Until then, farewell. ****Blaise folds himself into the shape of a paper airplane and throws himself out the window.****

After seeing how TGC turned out, it would've been better for Gargoyles to end on Hunter's Moon. A couple episodes had some decent ideas but they were mangled in the execution (Goliath's trial and Hudson going blind in his other eye). It was just painful to watch them...
On the other hand, if TGC were not produced, would there be an outcry of people wanting the series to come back(much less the yearly gatherings happening)? Couple of other forums I've lurked at complained of how nothing was resolved at all and some argued it was sabotaged(not going to argue if it's true or not, just saying what I've read elsewhere). If it ended on Hunter's Moon, it still left a lot of unresolved issues but ended on a good note and people may of just let it go eventually. But TGS resolution nearly broke everything Gargoyles stood for and didn't have a note to end on, which probably ticked off fans and (guessing) gave someone the motivation to start up the gatherings, a group of people to do TGS, etc.. Without TGC, we might not of had any of these events, which led up to the DVD. And if enough copies get bought, who knows?
Of course, I'm assuming a lot of stuff here. But it makes you wonder about the what ifs...

ok, a high note, sure, we've been waiting a long time to see Goliath and Elisa kiss and for the Clan to move back to the Castle, and a cliffhanger, most certaintly, but it was not a good episode to end a SERIES with. there are a billion loose ends and unfinished business. not that the Goliath Chronicles could do any better, but many of you seem to be saying that Hunter's Moon makes a better SERIES ender than Angels in the Night, and i strongly disagree. Hunter's Moon is a great season ender, but it needed a good season to follow it up, and unfortunatly it didn't get one. Angels of the Night ended a series, there was no intent for more episodes to be made after it.

i'm not sure why you guys keep saying that the Hunter's Moon was such a high note in the series! i think it was a good Season ender, and had some good things happen (Goliath & Elisa, back in the castle) but Hunter's Moon also began probably the most difficult part of the Clan's lives since the Wyvern Massacre. at the beginning of Hunter's Moon, they talked about how good of a life they had, at the end, it was turned upside down. i dunno, just doesn't seem all happy to me... i mean the entire world thinks they blew up a building or something. the whole city is after them and they have to trust Xanatos, of all people, to keep them safe...

I agree. I think it probably would've been for the best had the TGC never been produced. Just about everyone who has seen the TV saga from episode 1 to 78 would agree, the series would have been better over all ending on a high note (a.k.a. Hunter's Moon).
To me personally...it's...the clones! I would respect the TGC a bit more had they not killed off the clones. Everything else I could sit through despite the bad dialogue and storyline. But when the clones died, it burned a huge hole through some, otherwise, half-decent animation.

sorry bout the DP, but....
I viewed the Goliath Chronicles for the first time about 2 years ago. Until that time, Gargoyles had ended with Hunter's Moon for me. I remember watching journey when it aired, but I couldn't remember much of it at all (actually, I thought for sure that it was ransom until 2 years ago). I have to say that I am sorry I bothered to record season 3. My dvd set does have chronicles in it, but really, it's only in there for the sake of completion. Would it be better to have left it after Hunter's Moon?
Yes... and no.
Yes, because after seeing how the Goliath Cronicles took the Gargoyles series down quite a bit, I wish they had just left us guessing what happens next...
No, because we would have wanted to see how everything turned out for the gargs, what with being exposed and everything. If they had managed the Goliath Cronicles better(Not called them the Goliath Cronicles for one thing. Why WAS it called that anyway, apart from Goliath suddenly deciding to give a moral away at the end of each story?) tthen perhaps the series could have ended on a high note, instead of just some episodes that didn't exactly make sense all the time, ie Thailog and why no one seemed to ask why he survived without a scratch on him! Oh,and why he started to degenerate exactly the same time as the other clones. (surely his would have started months before theirs, he's been around much longer than they have!
Ok, enough ranting.:P

I liked "The Journey" a lot - Macbeth's final appearance in the series, defending the gargoyles, Margot getting more fleshed out as a character, Vinnie increasing in stature from a mere comic-relief figure to somebody who could stand up to Castaway, not to mention the introduction of Castaway and the Quarrymen - but the rest of the Goliath Chronicles still felt an anticlimactic way of ending the series. If "Gargoyles" had ended with "Hunter's Moon", it'd have ended on a high note, which is more than can be said about the way that it ended with "Angels in the Night".
The one big advantage of it ending with the Goliath Chronicles was that "Angels in the Night" resolved the one crucial dangling thread in "Hunter's Moon" - the fact that the gargoyles had been exposed to the public and its hostile response. Though, the way that "Hunter's Moon" ended, I wonder whether, if there'd been no further episodes after it, we'd really have paid as close attention to that; the big focus is more on the gargoyles back in the castle, the feud with Xanatos over, Goliath and Elisa's kiss.
This won't come as a surprise to anybody who's attended the last couple of Gatherings, but I got an eye-opener at "Ask Greg" today when Greg Weisman mentioned about Demona, in that "Team Atlantis" story, using the Praying Gargoyle to "bring to life" the architectural gargoyles in Paris. Whoa! I had no idea that the Praying Gargoyle was multi-functional. (I wonder if Demona's made provisions to repair it again after Goliath destroyed it at St. Damien's.)

i liked The Journey of course, and i liked Broadway Goes to Hollywood, but those are the only episodes i ever felt went with the flow of the first two seasons. the other episodes were either so bad they were not worth watching or so funny that i still crack up about certain things years after i've seen them. when Proteus is posing as elisa for Goliath in the alley for instance, i laugh about Elisa's faces all the time, esspecially when she takes Goliath's hand and growls! ROFL!

Brookona: In the future, you might want to not type in all capital letters. See, to those that frequent IRC, all capital letters equates to yelling.
Todd: Honestly, while I don't care for TGC all that much as a whole, it wasn't really THAT bad. It could've been alot better if they had a decent animation team. As much as I cringed at the cheezy animation, it WAS starting to get better (Broadway Goes Hollywood). Personally, I found "A Bronx Tale" funny as hell....but thats probably because I can relate to Bronx in that episode since I've got three dogs. :) Plus, we wouldn't have gotten to see Goliath smack around Castaway in the "finale". :D That I enjoyed VERY much. :)
However, it probably would've been better in the long run to end it with the Hunters Moon trilogy.

Just to liven things up here a little:
Do you think that it might have been better if "Gargoyles" had ended with "Hunter's Moon" and the Goliath Chronicles had never been made?

There's still time to help me with the quantitative survey about animation I'm doing for my grad project! I got an acceptable turnout, but a few more responses could definitely help.

Nick>I've used several video editing programs. Screenblast is my favorite for the money. Hey, if I could afford a better program for $300, I'd jump on it, but for around $100, Screenblast gets the job done well. I just wish there was more transitions and FX then what they have. They have a lot, but they could have so much more. One person I know has a program that gives the video a Monet look. Another FX they have is watercolor. And a few more shape transitions besides square, circle, triangle. A heart would be nice. And a transition that shatters. Screenblast.com does update with new transitions and whatnot. They have some cool flames I downloaded.

Wow, Screenblast is fun to play around with. And I am finally getting work done on that video. Don't know if I'll get done in 46 days (hey, my time is limited), but if nothing else, I'll have my craft perfected for next year's contest....if there is a contest next year..
