What I would love to see Disney do is first release season 2 in a big box set which some bonus items, such as an animation cel reproduction. Later on they can start releasing the second season in seperate 2 disc volumes. Probably would never happen though.

I am torn right now. I'm tired of studying, and want to watch Gargoyles, but one of my friends agreed to watch it wtih me next weekend. I don't know if I should wait, because I have a ton of other DVDs/comics/games I could continue on, or just watch it twice... I am so tempted to just watch it twice :)

Jade Griffin>re: the comic book. The problem is it has to be non-profit etc. Not to worry we are currently in compleation of our comic book website. We have some artists who have worked for marvel etc.. working on it. It's a fan run project with no money involved etc. It's ok if it stays fan based and the comic is not printed.
www.ka-blamo.com/gargs is the current site location.

If you guys want to take it a step further and try to get other companys to pick up the comic we tryed that it's really difficult because of copyrights and disney and yadda yadda. but you can try. Or if you want you can help us out on our online comic project. Just email me and I'll get your more info.

PATRICK - I find Dingo's "Central American war" remark rather amusing, since later on in the series, two members of the Pack (though not Dingo himself) proceed to get involved in a conflict (though not a full-scale war) in Central America - Guatemala, to be precise. Although I seriously doubt that anybody on the production team had foreseen "The Green" at the time that they gave Dingo that line.

It's one of those intriguing little lines that take on extra significance in the light of later episodes. Another that I can think of is the bit in "Upgrade" when the gargoyles foil the Pack's bank robbery, and Wolf shouts at them "This isn't over!" - which were the exact same words that Hakon shouted at the gargoyles after they beat off the Vikings' first attack on Castle Wyvern. Wolf's inheritance must have been beginning to kick in even before Hakon's ghost began to pull him to that cave.

Being the contact on the GargoylesDVD site has an unexpected consequence-- people come to me with questions I don't have answers to! The latest concerns the DVD being released in the UK. As far as I know, there are no plans to release the DVD outside the US. Is that correct? Is the best advice for foreign fans just to harass Disney?

Thanks for the help, guys!

I really hope that Disney decides to release season 2 on DVD. :) I just hope that this time that they actually include the Gathering diaries that they neglected to include on the S1 DVDs. Besides, a commentary track for the Hunter's Moon and Avalon trilogies would RULE! :) Maybe they could even include (or release seperately) a soundtrack CD! :)

Patrick: I'm not positive about the 12 days of Christmas, but if I were to guess I'd say it's the 12 days AFTER. I know that the 12th day after Christmas is the day of Epiphany (Jan 6th) which celebrates the wise men coming to see Jesus.

Does anyone know when the "twelve days of Christmas" start? Is it the 12 days leading up to Christmas, and the 12th day of Christmas is Christmas Day? Or do the 12 days start on Christmas?

Re: The Pack > I think virtually all of the members - Fox included - were ex-mercenaries. Dingo quips that he's gotten so out of shape that he "wouldn't last a week in a Central American war." And Xanatos tells Owen, "I created the Pack to be much more than just a T.V. show." I think his true intent all along was to form a brute squad, not compete for ratings with the WWF.

229 days left until The Gathering 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Shal - Gotta hate those burgles. My house has had three such events (nothing ever taken, two folks scared off by the alarm).

Anyway, pulled from the end of "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time," Robbins' concluding line is I think what you're looking for:

"The written word is all that stands between memory and oblivion. Without books as our anchors, we are cast adrift neither teaching nor learning. They are windows on the past, mirrors on the present, and prisms reflecting all possible futures. Books are lighthouses erected in the dark sea of time."

Kristen, D. Taina> Happy Birthday!

NO DVD PLAYWER?> If you don't have a DVD player right now, don't worry. I bought Transformers: The Movie almost two years before I got my DVD player. When I finally got to watch it, it was that much sweeter!

COMMENTARY> I forgot to add what eps I'd like to see commentary on.

- COS 1, 2, 3, 4 (natch).
- The Mirror
- Avalon 1, 2, 3
- Pendragon
- Bushido
- The Green
- MIA
- The Gathering 1, 2
-Hunter's Moon 1, 2, 3

I still think pre Avalon should be one set, and the rest another or two.

OVERPRICED CARTOON SETS> Transformers, G.I. JOE, JEM, MLP... they are ALL priced at OVER $90 Canadian ($73.46 American) where ever i've looked. I can't afford that!

So, I went to Amazon.com and bought MLP and Transformers season 2 part 1 for around $44 American ($60 Canadian) and saved $30, even with conversion of currency and shipping! (Although, I had to save for four months to afford them...)

That is all I will say.

Hi every one, and Happy Holidays to all - I used to have a Gargoyles quote calligraphed and framed - until my house was burgled - The quote was about books being lighthouses - I never thought to memorize it as 'having it in plain sight' would mean that I could look at it whenever I wished - My folly indeed.

Is it possible some one out here knows the quote I speak of? If you do and could email it to me or post it here I be ever so grateful! {my e-mail is thundersinger@yahoo.com } Thanks ever so much.

Kristen: Happy birthday to us! :D I'm twenty-two years old today. I'm getting old. :P

As for Season 2 on DVD, I'd break it up into three parts: Pre World Tour, World Tour, and Post World Tour. That would make the World Tour DVD a bit more expensive than the rest, though... Any ideas?

I got my DVD at Wal-Mart on Thursday. I searched the mall, Blockbuster, Video Avenue, and finally Wal-Mart, even though I'd called several times and they always told me it hadn't arrived yet. But it was my last hope, so I went. It was partially hidden behind some other DVD that had fallen off its shelf, but when I caught the "GAR"... I just let out this huge gasp and I thought I'd faint. I quickly removed the DVD that was in the way and just gawked at the Gargoyles DVD (my precioussssss...) After two days of searching, there it was... right there in front of me... I grabbed it and kissed it and leaped for joy. There were seven copies left when I got there, so I don't know what that means. Well, the Spider-Man 2 DVD had an entire section filled with DVDs that hadn't sold, so having only seven left for Gargoyles may be a good thing...

So I went home, happy as a clam, threw everything aside and sat down to watch the DVD. The first thing I did was watch the commentary. I was a bit disappointed that Keith David didn't talk much, and that he wasn't in the first two episodes (Greg didn't tell us about that... LET'S GET 'IM!!) but he was there, and he was enjoying the episodes, so I'm happy. :D Then I watched the Original Show Pitch. That picture of Goliath in the subway train still makes me laugh! And then I watched the Gathering of the Gargoyles featurette. It's just as wonderful and it makes me happy that I'm (hopefully) going to the Gathering next year. I still have to watch the episodes themselves... I've been so busy with the special features!

All in all, a wonderful DVD, and the animated menus are beautiful even though Goliath's too small in the first disc menu and like someone else pointed out, Bronx had Demona's snarl. But I can't complain. I'm happy happy happy, and I hope we get season two! And maybe season three as well, but only for the sake of having the complete set.

Does anyone know why some of the voices sound different in Awakening? I suppose there are several versions of those episodes, but it took me by surprise.

Funny how the subject of DVD reviews comes up. I was just thinking we should add them over on The Strip our off-topic area at the Gathering of the Gargoyles Forum.

So why not? Leave your review, thoughts, comments and so on and encourage others to do the same!

Speaking of reviews: I picked up a copy of The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat - voiced by our own Thom Adcox. Hee-larious. My husband commented "I wonder what they were smoking when they came up with this show?"

If you haven't seen the show by all means check it out! We've got a link to it on Thom's Credits page.

And don't forget, early-bird registration prices end on December 31st.

Greg Bishansky > I like your break-up of Season 2, but I hope they don't go for a 4-part release. That would hurt. It seems to me that slim, low-episode releases are more common for shows that're currently airing or only recently finished (the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men Evolution, Invader Zim, etc), whereas vintage cartoons are more commonly put out in boxed sets (that're often absurdly overpriced, but I'm not getting into that). I think someone's mentioned this already, but I'd like it if they go with Transformers/G.I. Joe-like releases. Two parts to a season maximum. Ideally having Season 2 in one massive boxed set would be insanely cool, but there's really no way for that to be as profitable to Disney as spaced out cheaper sets, is there? Oh, and if they do give us releases that have more than two discs per set, I hope they go with the packaging style that Fox Home Entertainment has been using for a lot of their releases within the past couple years, the slipcases (see: Firefly, Futurama).

Having watched "Awakening", most of it for the first time since the original airing, some thoughts:

All the voice actors rock. Except I'm a little worried about Salli Richardson. See, I know I loved Elisa originally, thought she was one of the best women of animation I'd seen/heard. But she feels like the weakest component at the moment. Maybe Richardson's performance will grow on me later, maybe she grows into the role eventually. Maybe I just need to see some mushy Goliath/Elisa future-relationship-implying scenes to get me on her side again.

Was it a mistake to have Demona try something as drastic as killing Goliath this early on? I mean I guess she made up her mind about him over those 1000s years that he definitely was a fool, let her twisted, blind opinion of him being responsible for the death of the Wyvern clan really set in...but she sure didn't give him much of a chance to explain his position on the us vs. them deal. The modern-day happenings of "Awakening" takes place over, two, maybe three days at most? (I know you can probably figure this out easily by counting the sunrises, but I forgot to try, even though I remember being curious before watching the whole thing about the time span). I guess I should wait until I get to "Temptation" to see how it all flows, but she defintely doesn't try to get Goliath back after that, right? Afterwards all her efforts are pretty much concentrated on destroying humanity, correct?

I also wonder how well Xanatos's amoral slant will hold up. He's pretty much attempted to kill the gargoyles right off the bat, so it's kinda funny that they're even willing to come to an uneasy alliance later on in the series. What was his purpose in having them go on those disc-retrieving missions, anyway? It's pretty much implied that he wanted to study their efficiency and anatomy for aid in developing the Steel Clan, but did he expect much else out of aquiring them? When he says something to the effect of, "Goliath is becoming too difficult to control", it sounds like he expected the clan to be pretty easy to manipulate. Having met Demona beforehand though, he MUST'VE known they weren't lesser creatures where intelligence was concerned.

Speaking of the Demona/Xanatos alliance, does it go into how they became sometimes-allies later in the series? Did he really learn about Castle Wyvern and the clan's curse from the Grimorum, or did Demona contact him and persuade him to buy the castle?

I enjoyed "Thrill of the Hunt". I didn't when it originally aired. I was always a fan of some of The Pack though (not Jackal and Hyena), just not their introductory episode. Is it ever said how exactly The Pack was formed? I know Xanatos financed them, but beyond that? They're basically the equivalent of wrestlers with their own action-adventure series, but who were they beforehand? They like to hunt, so were some of them game hunters/bounty hunters beforehand? Otherwise I don't really get why a whole group of celebrities is so corrupt that they'd do everything the members of The Pack go on to do later...Don't worry, I'm not questioning this too heavily. As well thought out as the series is, it's still a cartoon and I don't expect every minor detail to have been explained. But if Greg and his writers did explain any of what I'm wondering about anywhere in the series, even in a vague throwaway line, I'd be curious to know about it (you can just tell me "Wait for episode X", though. It'd be cool to rediscover stuff I've forgotten or may not've ever known about due to missing some episodes).

I loved the show's original sales pitch. It was the first thing I watched, since it only seemed fitting to start at the very beginning. I'm not a fan of the Hunchback-of-Notre-Dame-like Gargoyle underlings, but I kinda liked Goliath's original design. He's a lot bigger and more bestial, genuinely scary in the right light. I'm happier with the Goliath we ended up with though, it's better that they have him more human-looking, arguably what passes for handsome even, if Elisa's attraction to him is to be more acceptable/believable.

Gonna save the "Awakening" commentary and the Gathering footage 'til after the Season 1 finale.

Hi lori! Nice comments on the show. Anyway, there were three seasons created (78 episodes in all). Greg Weisman only worked on one episode of the third season though, and since it's all his vision, some people feel like there's only 66 episodes that are really true to the spirit of the series. As for season 2... I guess we're going to have to wait and see how Disney responds to the sales of season 1.

Season Two: I'd love commentaries on the multi-parters, plus maybe "Vows", "Grief" (since Greg could explain the changes he'd have made if he had his time over, admittedly more for the benefit of fans who haven't seen Ask Greg), "Future Tense" and "The Reckoning". All the backdoor pilots would make for interesting commentaries too. I'd really love if they put "The Journey" on the season 2 DVDs as well but I guess that's very unlikely.

One feature for season 2 though... that cut scene between Elisa and Jason in the clock tower. Is my mind going, or did Greg say that the actors recorded it? If so, wouldn't it be great if there was a feature to play the episode with the audio inserted at the appropriate point (obviously with a placeholder image, perhaps the text of the script directions), so we could watch the scene as aired or with that cut scene. That's the feature I'd really like. But I guess the audio has probably been lost by now.

KAYLLE - I'm uneasy about submitting a lot of DVD reviews to the "Ask Greg" queue, given how full it is already; it's still at the 640+ mark, and likely to stay that way for a while, I fear, unless Greg has the queue closed again. On the other hand, they'd be a better thing to fill the queue with than all the questions of the "How much do the gargoyles weigh?" variety (seeing those makes me suspect that too many of the question-submitters out there see things in an overly statistics-related manner).

It'd be neat to have a "City of Stone" commentary, though I'm not holding my breath for it. One thing that ought to be in it would be some comments on the way that they took the reverse angle on Macbeth from Shakespeare's play. (Greg mentioned once that John Rhys-Davies, when he first read the script for "City of Stone", thought that they were taking a revisionist approach towards Macbeth, until Greg explained to him that their take was based on the original historical Macbeth. After that, he became very enthusiastic about it.)

Vanguard, Shara, and all> Interesting that you should bring up the comic idea and sending it to be taken up by another company. My favorite comic company is Antarctic Press, link below. I actually asked them if they could or would do it. The Editor in chief emailed me and said that if I could assemble a creative team i.e. writers and artists and send them a sample, essentially me doing all the leg work, he thought it would be a great idea.
Antarctic Press, btw, does true American Anime in comic format. IOW, manga:) Not to say others don't. Just that AP is my fave:)

It's about time that this cartoon received a decent DVD treatment! The plot quality, character development, voice acting, and animation work truly mixed together to create something far greater than the sum of its parts.

Has there been any word on when the next season will be released? And, pardon my n00bishness, but how many seasons were created while the series was still on the air? Thanks in advance for any responses.

"I would hope the execs would not be stupid enough to put "Eye of the Beholder" on a separate DVD than "Vows". "

As long as the the two episodes are on the same set, I see no problem with them being spread over two DVDs.

Just got through watching the bonus features on the DVDs. It's obvious the commentary was taken in a very informal environment and it works better that way.

GXB, like you, I agree the best place for any commentary would be on the City of Stone episodes. I would hope the execs would not be stupid enough to put "Eye of the Beholder" on a separate DVD than "Vows". There is no reason they couldn't sell all of Season 2 in two packages. (The TF fandom had 4 disc packages for their season 2 episodes)

I just hope enough copies are sold and gargoyles dvds don't become shelf-warmers. :-(

I got my DVD! Yaaaaaaay!

This week has pretty much been awful for me, schoolwork-wise, so I purposely picked the shipping option that would deliver my DVD on Friday afternoon, when I was likely to have my work done <g>. I didn't get finished until about 1 am Saturday morning when one of my dorm-mates took pity on me and helped me debug my code. He happens to be a fan so when we were done (despite the fact I still had a paper to write) we watched the Gathering documentary and Deadly Force, which he'd never seen, as a reward.

And I made it onto the DVD! I'm the silver one in the intro, at about 9 seconds in! I'm a little disappointed that they cut away before the wings sprang open, since I've never seen what they looked like, but hey, I'm on a DVD! (Although incidentally, if anyone has video of the wings, I'd be curious to see it.) Okay, so my one-second-of-fame aside, I really liked the documentary. I thought they did a really great job showing how much we love the show and why without making us look too much like crazy fans.

And I absolutely love the commentary. It's like having Greg, Frank, and Keith in your living room watching with you! I was laughing out loud at some points, and really impressed by the depth of thought that went into seemingly minor details.

Another thought: If there are a lot of fans in the Boston area, maybe we could get together and watch the DVD? I'm a student in Cambridge, and generally when my friends and I want to watch a movie we just find an empty lecture hall and use the projector. (That way we get to watch on a large screen with a good stereo, instead of someone's small TV in a cramped dorm room <g>.) Would people be interested in doing that? I'm leaving for Christmas break this week, but maybe we could organize a showing in January?

The worst possible break is having any part of City of Stone on a different DVD than the rest. Although, which episodes go with it is tricky. On one hand, it's a nice follow-up to VOWS (but VOWS needs Eye of the Beholder to be on the same DVD), but it's also nice to put "High Noon" on that same DVD.

The whole question really revolves around worst possible places to split episodes apart. "Eye of the Beholder" needs to be on the same DVD as "VOWS". Every part of any multiple parter needs to be the same DVD. "I'll Meet by Moonlight" through "The Gathering Part 2" really needs to be on the same DVD. Bad splits on episodes would really ruin the experience.

*stops to ponder how episodes are split apart.* Hmm. The only thing I might have done different is put the 1st 5 episodes on one DVD, next 4 on the 2nd, and last 4 on the 3rd and add more bonus features to each DVD, but that's just my taste.

ARGH! Wal-Mart finished my frustation today!!!!! The Palm Coast Wal-Mart just got Gargoyles on the shelf today!!!!!

Aw well...It gave me a chance to get another family to notice it. A father was arguing with his two kids about what DVD set to get. They complained how he checks the ratings. I mentioned to him about Gargoyles and the kids are a great age to start seeing it. That it was a show about real issues and lessons without talking down to the kids and parents. Not sure if I sold it to him. He didn't pick it up, but at least I might have planted that seed into his head :)

I watched somemore of the MLP DVD... I felt silly watching it... but to balance out the fact that it's a girl's show, I then watched "Deadly Force" and "Die Hard" right after. ^_^

DEADLY FORCE> I would have loved to hear a commentary on that ep. It got me wondering, if there is a next set, (I pray there is) what ep's deserve commentary?

Maybe Greg could let the fandom choose one or two eps we'd like to see comentary on... that would be cool. (There is no easy nor logincal way to break up season two into two parts, even though "Avalon" seems to be a natural break in the season. I did the best I could. Three parts works fairly well.)

Season 2 part 1 - 20 eps - Leader OT Pack - The Price

Season 2 part 2 16 ep's - Avalon -Eye of the Storm

Season 2 part 3 16 ep's - New Olympians - Hunter's Moon III

Suggestions?

That is all I will say.

About the comic all I have to do is convince Disney to give the rights to comic publisher like Image or Top Cow, they do good work and right now several retro comics are doing well Street Fighter, GI-Joe, and Darkstalkers are selling quite well. Devils Due Publishing is another comic company that the Gargoyle comic would do well by the publisher.

The novel series would do well if these books provide new material and insights into the Gargoyle world and new characters as well, hey it worked for Marvel.

My copy of the Gargoyles Season One DVD came in at the local Blockbuster's, and I picked it up this afternoon. It was a bit less expensive than I'd been expecting - only a little under 19 dollars! Unfortunately, I haven't watched it yet - I still don't have a DVD player - but at least it helped send a message to Disney and support the fandom.

I just looked at dates for the 'summer in vegas' stuff...

One fandom's looking to either July 16 or July 23rd for the event. The Gathering's July 29-Aug 1. The biz frat is Aug 3-7.

I might just have to look for a job in Vegas... it'd make this summer sooo much easier..... lol. Move there once, and don't have to think about how much rent I'm paying out in roughly a week's time. lol.

I need a job... ugh.

I really hope Disney does go ahead and give us season 2. Even if it ends up as a 4 disc set... or 3 disc set.. however it happens, I hope it will.

Plus, Greg and Frank referenced enough of the second season eps to make me want to see it... seeing as most of my favorite eps are from season 2.

I've already watched all of disc one... watched eps 1-5, then the commentary, then eps 6 and 7.

The sound quality on this thing is awesome.... it's wonderful... it helps that the sounds themselves are great :D

Is it just me or does the fade in/fade out deal (it's not exactly a fade... it's a build in and out thing) with the logo, coupled with the music, give anyone else goosebumps because it's awesome?

Re: Vegas.... right now.. 2 fandoms + my biz frat all have conventions in Vegas.... the frat's is during the week of, but before, the Gathering. The other fandom's trying to plan a get together either the week before that, or the week of, just before the biz frat.

loads of fun.. heh.

Sorry bout the double post....

I just finished searching the dvds on my computer and did not find anything extra. It looks like there are no eggs to be found. Hope I'm wrong tho...

I don't know if they had room or not, but I believe a DL dvd can hold 8.5 gigs. These discs read as having a around 7 gigs. I don't know if that includes the macrovision tho, so it could be that there was no more room. At any rate, I'm thinking of compiling all my Gargoyle stuff and making a companion bonus features disc.

Well, my dvds off of Amazon came in Thursday. First thing I did was pop the second disc in and watch the Gathering featurette. That looks like one cool place to be. Unfortunetly, I won't be able to attend this years Gathering, but, there's always next year!

As I said, my dvds came in Thursday, but I didn't get a chance to watch the episodes until last night. I only watched the first 2 parts of Awakening and the commentary for the first episode. Three things jump out at me.

1. Everything is much clearer. It is a little bit disconcerting for the first couple of minutes because Gargoyles has NEVER been this clear for me.

2. The extra sounds just jump out at you. There's all kind of background stuff that you can hear now.

3. Not only is there extra sound, but some sounds have actually been changed from the original episodes. At least the first part of Awakening. I didn't hear anything different in the second part, but in the first when the first attack on the castle, Hakon yells "Fire!". In the original episode, it sounds different. Like this yell is deeper. The next one stands out even more! After the attack and the vikings are running away, the castle guards and all yelling and whooping, but, I didn't hear one say "Who needs the Gargoyles?!?". I did hear the "They'll think twice before coming back". And finally, when everyone in the castle is being escorted out after the vikings have taken over, Someone pushes the Magus and says, "Move...Now!". Well, in the original, it sounds like Clancy Brown (the voice for Hakon) says that line, but in this version, it sounds more like the actor who did Dracon's lines.

Call me nitpicky if you want, but this is stuff that is noticable to me. It doesn't REALLY detract from the set, it just causes me to pause for a second. I love the dvds and would love the second set even more. One thing that occurred to me was, if Disney does a second set, would they do it in one set, or would they break it up. I think we'll get 2 parts to season 2, just like Transformers or G.I. Joe. I don't care as long as the second season is released.

Well, I think I'll go buy a few more off of Amazon now.

BattleBeast>Stormy said exactly what I would have :)

Thanks Stormy!

And let me tell you all about MY Gargoyles DVD adventure....It was HELL! First off, let me explain where I live....In the black hole of Florida. Palm Coast originally started out as a retirment town. Now it is a small city. But unfortunatly, no one told retailers that because all we have is ONE stinking Wal-Mart which is on the other side of the 95 bridge and takes about 10-15 minutes to get to due to traffic. So I figured I would pre-order it at my Blockbuster that is 2 minutes from my house. I made out their little paper, said "Cya December 7th!" and left. Tuesday finally comes, right after work, I run over (literally). They don't have it behind the counter. And they don't have it on the shelf. They don't even have the paper I made out. They have NOTHING! So when I finally pry the only working car from my sister's hand, I go to Wal-Mart....guess what! They don't have it either. They had every other DVD released that day except Gargoyles!!!!! Was I mad? I was devasted! And fuming!
The next day, I have no car. But my fiance is over, but he's too tired from driving all day to bring me to Daytona to get my Gargoyles! The nerve! ;)
FINALLY, Thursday I am able to get to Daytona. I go to Best Buy and check the Sci-Fi section, NOTHING. Disney. NOTHING. Family. NOTHING. Even Anime NOTHING...And then it was like the angels sang from above and this great beam of light shined down onto the SciFi TV Shows!! I go over and look and look and look! Ready to scream in frustration! And then it's like it appears. ONE. JUST ONE Gargoyles Season 1! It was mine! My precious! I snatched it, told every customer and associate within that aisle and all the way to the cashier, how much Best Buy made my day because they had Gargoyles. And telling them all they need to buy it when it comes in again just to see why I am just so happy.
And so there's my moment of insanity...One of the many.
Anyways...got it! Great art! Love the disc art and love the insert. Using the old pictures from Force of Goliath and The Hunted VHS worked out real well. Fit right into the cover and menus. GREAT GREAT GREAT menus!!
LOVED watching the Gathering!!! And Greg!!! Thank you so much for the pitch!!! I love to see development! I loved the development art we saw. For the most part, I was glad on the changes. There were a few that I could have seen work with the show, and I could deffinetly see where some of the dropped-comedy show was at. But I am very glad with the way it turned out in the end. And it's simply fun to see how it all started!
I haven't watched the commentary yet. I will do so tonight. I give tons of props to Disney for making the DVD as they did (even if they did squat in advertising). The Gathering was done so nicely. Thank you Disney for being respectful to the fans!!!!
Well, I am off to watch it now :D :D

Hey look what I came across just now,

http://www.dracandros.lunarpages.com/Jebgarg/registry/

It's The "Gargoyles Fan registry", which no longer takes in new members, but I was thinking it could be agreat resource for anyone trying look up old members of the fandom slipped away over time. They could go through the registry and look for them. Also someone or several people could go through the entire registry and email (the ones that are still working) the people with information about the DVD. (I know it's a mammoth of a job but we want to let the people who have slipped away from gargoyles know about the DVD.

About Amazon.com ratings: Those ratings can be a little misleading. The things that are at the top are usually accurate, but when you start getting into items that have a lot lower rank, those rankings aren't accurate. Say a DVD is rank 1000, and another is rank 1,500. The two DVDs may actually have the same amount of sales, so that means everything in between also has the same amount of sales. As soon as someone buys item at rank 1123, it shoots up to rank 1000, and everything else drops by 1. It would probably be safe to say the top 500 sells a number of items every day, but below that no one may buy that item for a number of days, so the ranks can be misleading.

I'll try to dig up the article I read on this recently.

Let me be the first to greet your return, Tigershard:) Welcome back and can't wait to see everyone again this coming Gathering! Yes, Gatherings are real friendly places. We had in Montreal this year ppl walk in from heresay that a con was on! And we were very glad to see them come. I wasn't part of the con staff but discussed what could be seen and heard and bought at the con and made 'em feel right welcome.

By now you can see the dvd 1st season of gargs is out. It's a big step for us!

Who did you used to know in the fandom? Maybe we can help you track them down:) It's sad that your friends don't understand. We sympathize and have all been there. But yer back now! Welcome, again! *leaves you a chocolate truffle*

This is my personal Reawakening, my first post here in 6 years. When Gargoyles first started, I was in 5th grade, and would rush home from school every Friday to catch it. I drifed away from the fandom near the beginning of high school, due to the sudden increase in complexity and stress in my life, and the fact that the show as cancel made me a bit depressed. I've never forgotten the gargoyles and my love for them, every so often I would dig out my tapes and watch a few episodes. One of my favorite possessions was my Brooklyn key chain, which I lost freshman year of college when the chain broke.
One thing I have always wanted to do was attend a Gathering, and now I finally have the chance.

I want to go to the 2005 Gathering, but I don't know anyone in the fandom anymore. So my little Gargoyles-related life history is my way of saying hello again to everyone. A few people have told me so far that the Gatherings are a friendly place even for those of us who haven't been part of the fandom for awhile. Still, I would like to get to know some people again. It is kind of hard to keep my love of Gargoyles to myself, and my friends just don't understand it.

I'm 21 years old, just graduated from University, start graduate school next month, and the thing I want most right now is Gargoyles to be part of my life again.

Jennifer -- Yes, that did sound weird. It piqued my curiosity too, and I went to check it out. I was mollified to see the creator describe the series as an "action/comedy" (as opposed to an action/drama) consisting of "22-minute stories" (as opposed to a series that, in many ways, consisted of a single 1,452-minute story). As for the characters, maybe we can just maintain that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Patricia > I found that same quote. It's just rather abstract. I'm still looking around to see if anyone has deciphered the apparently top-secret equation that is used to calculate the numerical rank.

I've found a couple of explanations for how the ranks apply to books, but there's so many, many books on Amazon, the rankings go into the hundreds of thousands, so it's tough to tell whether the same stats would be applicable to DVDs.

That Jake Long thing looks pretty interesting, actually. While it's entirely possible that there's a 'Gargoyles' influence (and it may be that some of the same people who were around when 'Gargoyles' was developed also have a handle on this), I'm not sure there's anything underhand or worrying about it. Any litany of strange (urban) magical creatures would be likely to include gargoyles. Anything vaguely quest-like might well include hunters. Anything Chinese-related might have a reference to Fu-dog. Of course, if the Disney executives were influenced by Greg's ideas than that's still good because it means they (1) remember them and (2) think there's mileage in them. Meanwhile, if this action/fantasy series does well it may stand to reason that they could try out other action/fantasy series. Plus, this seems like a really nice idea for a series.

I think Fox must have learned that Owen was Puck about the same time the rest of us did, at the end of "The Gathering." I could even imagine that she demanded a lot of answers out of him, since Titania didn't really stick around to explain. At any rate, by the time we reach "Possession," it seems like Fox knew.

Re: DVDs on eBay > You know, I bet there'll surely be some shady sellers who've already been selling those homemade "All 78 episodes" sets on DVD-R who won't hesitate to use the official first season DVD as a chance to spiff-up their packaging, too. Recorded media on eBay is a real gray area as far as seperating the bootlegs from the genuine thing.

Amazon rankings > I think there must be some sort of mathematical formula that calculates these rankings that's a lot more complex than just being a tally of units sold in comparison to other items. Sales for the current day probably carry a lot of weight. Think I'll do some sniffing around and see if I can find an explanation anywhere of what the figure truly means.

Yes, but the question asked in the archives is, "Did Fox know about Owen being Puck BEFORE THE GATHERING?" What I want to know is, does she know at all? Even now? If so, when did she discover it? It's been a while, so if it did occur I may have forgotten the details of it.

It took me until yesterday to get the DVD.

So now here's my review. It was awesome even though I had hoped to be included in the Gathering report primarily since I had signed the waiver form while I attended it on the Saturday.

Who else besides me thought it was funny that when Hudson was channel-changing in Awakening pt. 4, what should appear but a LION KING clip and yet Greg didn't pick up on that during the audio commentary.

Unless the eBay seller is actually buying their copies FROM Disney, there is an unlikliehood that it will be reported back to Disney how many they sold. And frankly, price doesn't bother me here this time. The more money Disney gets from Gargoyles, the better for us, IMO.

But I would avoid using eBay and any other private method of buying Gargoyles. Like from flea markets. As said before, you don't know if it's the real thing. Any fool can take the picture of the DVD from Amazon and use that in their listing. The next thing you'll know you either have a good looking bootleg or maybe even a real bad looking one.

The best bet is to buy from big retailers. Amazon.com, Overstock.com, Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, KMart, FYE, Virgin Stores, etc. They HAVE to report each and every sale, thus Disney will know.

If you buy the DVD on eBay from a private seller, you're probably doing nothing to increase the sales figures that will be reported back to Disney. You have to be making the initial purchase from a retail outlet, not buying a copy that someone is reselling. And the other thing I would worry about on eBay... am I getting a genuine DVD, or a ripped copy?

Jade > Regarding reviews in local newspapers and entertainment/sci-fi magazines and such...I looked in both my local Toronto papers, no mention. The Bourne Identity sequel got most of the DVD Reviews column space. What people should do is e-mail their entertainment columnists, pester them to review the set. If you've got cash, maybe offer to send them a set for reviewing, since it doesn't look like Disney promoted this thing and probably didn't send out a lot of preview copies.

Things I've found you can do IN-STORE to perhaps help the sale of the DVDs? I've been a stock clerk/cashier in the past so I know how annoying this can be, but who cares--MOVE the DVD. If there're 4 copies in the kids' section, take one and put it under "G" in the sci-fi and/or anime section. If the store has neglected to put any on the new releases shelf? Take a copy and shove one of the billion copies of Spider-Man 2 aside. You can do this subtley. Pick it up as if you're planning on buying it, wander around, browse a bit, then conveniently forget the DVD in obvious places. As long as no one catches you messing up the order of the store, who's it really hurt, y'know?

Speaking of stores, it's a huge shame that the Disney Store doesn't seem to be carrying this series. That's pretty much unforgiveable. It's like the 20th Century Fox conundrum--the Fox TV network is evil for canceling tons of brilliant, short-lived shows (Firefly, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Brisco, Futurama, Keen Eddie, Wonderfalls, Undeclared, etc), but Fox Home Video is great for releasing some of the most thorough boxed DVD sets on the market, and often getting those canceled shows out pretty quick too. Hate some of the components, not the parent company I guess.

Todd > BONE is a great little series and a wonder of the self-publishing world. I was very surprised at how much it grew from its humble happy-go-lucky beginnings in the first volume or two. Still have yet to pick up that last trade paperback collection, but I may not bother. It seems like it'd be more worthwhile to sell the previous trades on eBay and get that amazingly-priced mega-volume. Although I've heard Scolastics Books is releasing the entire series in color starting early 2005, and while I have nothing against black and white comics, I think Bone is suited to color.

matt > That's pretty funny that the people you were chatting with thought Lex was probably gay without having seen Greg Weisman's comments on the subject. There really was no indication of it though (dunno if they would've been allowed to show or even imply it and I'm also not sure how long Greg had that little detail for Lex in mind). Greg thankfully never implemented any cliched giveaways. Not that there'd be anything wrong with a flamboyant gargoyle, just that it's cool that Lex is just your average young joe like the other two member of the trio, who happens to swing that way. And yeah, Keith David's voice is hot.

Anyone in Canada (specifically Ontario) still need to buy their DVDs? I phoned a lot of places before buying mine yesterday.

HMV - $31.99
Music World - $36.99 (ouch!)
Future Shop - didn't have it yet
Sunrise - not in yet
WalMart - clerk said they won't be carrying it...WTF? She's probably wrong, but whatever, moving along...
Rogers Video - won't be carrying it

Zellers had the best price (only three copies when I went in). $24.99, even beats out Amazon.ca's price of $27-something. I was tempted to buy the other two copies, but I figure I'll let them sit there for a few weeks and then scoop them up for gifts or library donations or whatever).

If you buy a copy on eBay, is it going to be recorded in Disney's sales records? I'm not sure exactly how that aspect of online auctions works, but I'd be leary of buying them from anywhere that isn't likely to send a clear message to Disney. I'm all for saving money, but at this point we need all the measurable sales we can get.

Does anyone know how that works?

An even cheaper place to buy is apparently eBay, where some copies are being sold for less than $10 (how are these people making a profit? Or are the copies stolen or something?).

Wingless had the clever idea to check the boxed set ranking at the Canadian Amazon. I just checked now at the US one and we're at 80. I wonder what we were at during peak buying hours yesterday? Strangely enough, the boxed set listing didn't show any of the stars and reviews from the main listing.

Hi everyone. This is my first time posting here, so I'm sorry if I'm interrupting convo when I shouldn't be O.O I know this has nothing to do with the current conversation, but I have a question and someone suggested that I ask it here in the comment room. I searched all over the archives, and asks some other gargfans, but no one seemed to know the answer for sure: does Fox know that Owen is Puck? One would figure that after all of this time, she must, but at the same time I cannot pinpoint anything specific to prove this. When Owen revealed himself, Fox was with baby Alex and therefore unable to witness his other form. Does anybody know the answer, and can provide evidence to back it up?

In relevance to the conversation at hand, I was searching high and low for the DVD, but could not find it :( I FINALLY found it today at Tower Records, for $19.99!! :D

Whoo! Got my DVD today, soooo happy! DVD Passions sold out (though I have my suspicions they didn't carry many =S), MusicWorld didn't seem to have ever had them (that's no surprise), and I finally got it at HMV, which had I think 4 left *that I saw* (I suspect they also didn't carry many)... still, it's just exciting that it's finally here!

And what a set it is! I can't express how happy I am with the fact that the cover art is holographic! The disc and leaflet art are GORGEOUS *salivates* and the menu animation is fantastic, I'm glad they put so much effort into it! I've only watched Deadly Force so far, but the sounds seem to be a lot clearer (I noticed some clothing ruffling that I had never heard before).

OH! The featurette was very well done, and I can't tell you how happy I am that I made it on the DVD! Even though it's about 3 seconds of footage, it was a very flattering thing to see ^^ (I'm the guy in the Thailog costume walking straight towards the camera after the RadioPlay section). I was even happier to see that so many people got to be on the DVD, even if they didn't have anything to say! The cosplayers all look awesome, and I recognized a whole bunch of familiar faces =)

Nez and David (my Rookery brother and sister from the Clan Olympics) got some nice drawing close-ups, as did ChameleonGirl =)

Yeah, I've started ranting now. *runs out*

I bought mine yesterday from Amazon. Will have to wait to get it in the mail though.

Also, the last I checked tonight, it had the #213 DVD ranking.

On another note, I've been thinking: should we have a letter writing campaign to publishers of fantasy/science fiction books to drum up interest in a novel from Greg Weisman?

I got mine today. I must say I'm annoyed that I went to MusicWorld, CDPlus, AND WalMart Canada and none of them had it or had even heard of it. Finally HMV had it.

I'm the one in the army jacket standing next to a blackhaired guy, and the one in the Megatron T-shirt talking about garg biology and their glowing eyes, and again near the end saying how the characters of Gargoyles are like real people.

Greg posted his resume at "Ask Greg" in response to somebody's question, and revealed that one of the things that he'd worked on was a feature-length animated version of "The Tempest" for Disney (which presumably was scrapped before it saw completion). I've got to admit, this doesn't surprise me at all. (Though it does remind me again of how I hope that, if "Gargoyles" ever returns with Greg in charge, we'll get to see the introductions of Prospero, Ariel, and Caliban in the Gargoyles Universe; I still think that their presence is obligatory in a series which has already made use of the casts of "Macbeth" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream".)

Well, I ordered 2 copies of the DVD, and will be getting a third soon... one copy is on a two-day delivery, so I should have it by the weekend. JOY! ^_^

Literally every Wal-Mart, Target, Sam's Club and other assorted stores in Tampa Bay haven't heard of the Gargs DVD (or even knew if it was coming out yesterday!)... the only partial response I got was from the Best Buy on Dale Mabry, but the clerk I spoke to said they couldn't even hold a copy for me overnight ("Sorry, sir... it's just store policy.")

<growls> And people wonder why I won't go back into work for retail...

In any case, Meikai and JJ, and any other Florida Garg fan... could you all drop me a note at my email? (just removed the _AT_ and replace with an @...) Please?

For everyone else that's enjoying the DVD, can't wait to see my copy soonest!

Yeah, Gore, I couldn't figure that out myself, since neither Golden Girls nor RotK had *any* reviews on Amazon. So how does Amazon know customers love them?! But now the reviews have disappeared for Gargoyles, too. I seem to remember this happening once before, as some sort of server glitch? Riverdale > You were almost more animated in the footage they included than the cartoon clips. ;)

The difference between "Golden Girls" and "Gargoyles" is that one is a show about ancient beings who live together and try to make sense of contemporary society, and the other is a show about gargoyles. ;)

On my way back from my elective yesterday, driving along the Bedford Highway into Halifax, I noticed a familiar font out of the corner of my eye. So I turned my head (briefly! I was driving) to see that I wasn't crazy, that someone had posted a sign in their window using the Gargoyles title font.

So if you're ever in Bedford, Nova Scotia, driving along Highway 2, take a look out for "Doobie's Smoke Shop", and tell them you like their sign.

Dan: There doesn't appear to be any easter eggs on the DVD, probably because there simply isn't enough room. That's probably also why the Gathering featurette is only 14 minutes.

A dual-layer DVD usually holds about 4.7gb, and both DVDs use _all_ of that available space. The 13 episodes account for 4 hours and 46 minutes. The featurette makes it a nice and tidy 5 hours total. ('course then you add in Greg's pitch and that clean number theory goes out the window).

Anyways, I dug through the DVD anyways and didn't see anything.

No sales figures yet. Probably won't see anything like that for a little while.

But if it's music you're after, Carl Johnson, who composed the music used in the show, has made the tracks available through his website swanderfulmusic.com.

(They're so popular that any site shown on the air is down within seconds from everyone trying to check it out.) If someone were to call in with a question (make it a simple one), and then make a quick plug at the end...that would definitely get ALOT of attention.

Believe it or not, there was an old-timer from the fandom who stopped by the chat room last night who swore up and down he did not know about the DVD. We all thought he was pulling our legs at first. "What DVD are you talking about?" So yes... just because the wait is over, we can't stop spreading the word. :)

i purchased one on Amazon yesterday and plan to get at least one more in stores today...

i'm just really hoping this works, nervous in fact...

one funny story, i was in a gay chat room yesterday and decided to ask if anyone remembered Gargoyles, and many guys did! i told them that it had come out on DVD and several expressed interest in purchasing it. one guy said, "i'm in love with the leader one, his voice is hot" i told him that was Goliath voiced by Keith David and he said he went off to find pictures of Goliath, lol. another guy said, "Demona is my mommy" i had no comment for that one. and i was surprised to hear a couple guys ask, "wasn't there a little yellow gargoyle who was playing on our team?" i told them about Lex and asked them how they knew and they said "gaydar".

anyway, as many of us have been saying for months now, if you ask people about it, you'll be surprised at how often people remember and were fans, and you really could get a few more DVDs sold. so don't be shy, spread the word everywhere. a gay chat room may not seem like an obvious place to bring it up, but it works!

My notes on the DVD:

Was anyone else as disturbed as I that there's a Power Rangers commercial on my Gargoyles DVD? That's like inviting a murderer to speak at his victim's memorial service. Well, maybe not that bad, but it's still very annoying to me.

Of course the episodes are great, but there's really nothing new to say about them. And I haven't listened to the complete commentary, but Greg did mention "Ask Greg" at the beginning of Awakenings Part 5.

The Gathering featurette was very cool. Although I don't post very much, I read the Comment Room every day and I fell like I'm acquainted with most of you. And I've never been to a Gathering, so I'll second Demonskrye's request for a Who's Who in the Gathering video. If you're in the video, let us know where. And instead of describing yourself or quoting lines, you would be easier to find if you give the minute:second from the DVD timer.

Heya, long to lurker to AskGreg, though I've never spent much time in the comments room. I'm thrilled that so many are buying multiple copies, but when you come down to it, there may not be enough 'rabid fans' (i.e. the people that come here) to make enough of a dent. I think you're going to have to court the geek population with advertising to make a difference. That's the same demographic that brought Family Guy and Firefly back solely via DVD sales. I'd suggest advertising on:

1) Fark.com: http://www.fark.com/farq/classifiedad.shtml
You can link to Amazon.com for $75 because it's an e-commerce site. However if you link to here: http://www.dvdtoons.com/database/1455 you may be able to get away with the $25 cost for a classified. I'd suggest something like "One of the best animated series ever finally comes out on DVD" with a 'Spiffy' tag. I already tried submitting that link yesterday through the normal methods, but it was rejected.

2) Wilwheaton.net: http://www.wilwheaton.net/textads/
For only $10 you can get a text ad. It costs less than Fark's and may even be seen by more people.

3) Slashdot-type sites: http://www.ostg.com/advertising/
This is the big boy. It probably costs hundreds or thousands to do a banner ad, but if you contact them, they may be able to strike a deal given the circumstances.

My point is there's some really inexpensive ways to get the word out. I think there's a large number of geeks out there who remember the series fondly but have no idea the DVD has come out (or haven't thought about the show in years). They're the ones who can make a difference through the holiday season. Perhaps a Paypal account could be set up for fundraising. I'd do it, but I'm busy with college and am not quite sure how this fandom around here works. Just my two cents.

That's not a bad showing considering we started yesterday in the lower #300's. Now we just have to watch it through the holiday season and make sure Dec. 7 wasn't just a flash in the pan.

Got mine today from the local Suncoast. They only got 6 in, and 4 were reserved. On top of that, they misplaced them in the regular Family section, instead of the Disney family section. Also, funny thing happened at the Disney Store, I went in to ask about Gargoyles, I barely got the "Do you have Disney's Gar-" when the courtesy clerk cut me off saying "We don't have it, and we won't carry it, go try Suncoast!". I got the impression that she had been asked about it a lot. A good sign.

My report:

I went to Hastings to buy the Gargoyles DVD this late afternoon. (after 4pm). It was located in the "Family & Children"'s section. Good news. When I picked up my copy, there was only 2 others left on the shelves.

I got through listening to the commentary tracks earlier, and I have to say....WOW! What amazed me was that Disney allowed Greg to say "Bronx kicks ass!" but they wouldn't allow "Margo's a bitch!". :D Still, the comment was very amusing. :) Sheesh, I'm still in a state of shock that I have my favorite series of all time on DVD! :D If I ever attend a Gathering (definitely won't be the 05 one due to lack of funding), I am SO getting Greg to sign the cover. :) Hell, it might not be a bad idea for an address to be provided that we can mail out covers to, to get them signed (thats if Greg feels up to it).

That being said, it might also help things a little if we all started e-mailing the marketting people at Disney that we've all purchased the DVDs, how much we thank them for their release and how much we've enjoyed them. This is simple politics people, and if they see a large response to the release, the more likely that we'll get more extras if they choose to release seasons 2 and 3.

You know... this is probably the most times I've posted in a 24-hour period since before the first Gathering. And I'm still feeling blown away by that documentary.

There's still a few hours left to order from Amazon.con and have it count toward the December 7th sales tally, since they operate on Pacific (west coast) time.

And over in my Livejournal today, Allaine said "you might want to mention that approximately 120 days have passed since Gathering 2004 ended. Since there are 354 days between the end of G2004 and the beginning of G2005, we're over a third of the way there now."

And he's right, because there are currently 233 days left until The Gathering 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada. So once you've bought your DVD, and taken care of your Christmas shopping by getting copies of the DVD for your friends and family, don't forget to begin making plans to attend next year's convention by purchasing a pre-registered membership. The prices are low right now, but as always they go up as of the first of the year.

Good news: I was browsing through different categories on the top selling DVDs. Gargoyles is #39 under "Boxed Sets." In that category its above DVDs like Buffy Season 6, Star Trek Season 1, and Simpsons Season 3.

Also good: 138 reviews! 8 reviews in one day, pretty sweet!

Bad news: With the sales rank, we went from being #123 to #128. Not a huge fall, but still.

Hey, everyone...

I just watched the little "Gathering of the Gargoyles" documentary on the DVD. Very cool, and very nicely editted. They really did a great job of showing the fandom in a friendly, positive light. And in thinking about the whole fandom as family thing, I just want to publically give major kudos to Kathy, Zehra, Christine, Greg B., Aaron, Hudson, Riverdale, Whit and Stormy, Fan, Kanthara, and all the other people (I sort of lost count about halfway through) who provide such excellent commentary. Oh yeah, Greg Weisman and Keith David, too. ;)

I haven't watched any of the episodes yet, but from what I've seen of the menus and the clips during the documentary, I'm sure I'm going to be amazed by the crispness of images and the sound. I've never seen the playback look this clear and sharp before. Even without the extras, this DVD set would be well worth the money. I bet I'll never watch my first season VHS tapes from the Disney Afternoon again.

Demonskrye's DVD Adventures> The hunt began once I got off work. I intended to make some Amazon purchases regardless of whether I found it or not, but lack of patience meant hitting the brick and mortars.

Here's what I found:

Suncoast - Had it, but sold out. I'm not sure how many copies they ordered, but I'm guessing it was a fairly small number.

Disney Store - Didn't have it, didn't appear that they ever did. Their only DVD space is a single spinner rack and a shelf with the red boxes that I think are exclusive to the Disney stores. I didn't bother asking about it.

Tower Records - Success!...but in an odd place. The Tower near me just remodeled, so the "New Releases" section, which is still marked as such, was entirely full of Red Sox DVDs. I found the real New Releases section, but no Gargoyles. I browsed around some more and finally found it stuffed in the children's section. Correctly alphabetized, but not with any new releases. I picked up a copy immediately.

Newbury Comics - Stopped in to do a little more shopping. I wasn't really looking this time, but I didn't see it in the New Releases section.

After that, we went home. I watched the Gathering segment and put faces with a few names (though I don't know who everyone is yet; anyone want to do a who's who guide?). Later, I saw an ad for the GBA "Kingdom Hearts" on the TV. (Not Gargoyles related, I know, but I do so love that game.) After Andrew finished up on the computer, I ordered four copies on Amazon, most of which are going to friends.

Life is good. Read my article please.

Best Buy won... They had 5 or so other copies when I got mine at around 7ish.. heh.

Wal-Mart didn't have it.. so I just skipped by the other 3 walmarts on my way to Best Buy and got it there.

It was where the other new releases were.

Oh, btw... my local walmart didn't even have the Matrix box set out......... And no I'm not kidding.

Anyways.. I got it. heh :) It shall provide for some entertainment next week.. during finals. yay.

My friends and I bought all the copies of the DVD in stock (admittedly they didn't have too many copies) at 2 local Target stores this afternoon (and I finally bought a DVD player along with an adapter so I could watch it on my ancient TV). I watched parts of "Awakening" and "Deadly Force" (just to see it unedited); I hope to watch the Gathering feature later this evening. The original show pitch was fun to watch too.

Hey... It's nice to finally meet some of you for the first time! ^_^ I don't know who I am looking at (I know Keith and Greg) but all the fans in Montreal... I can't tell you from Adam... But still nice to see faces for the first time!

DISNEY has got me REALLY pi$$ed off. I was at my local WALMART at 8:00 AM to get the DVD. Well, They didn't have it. So I talked to the DISNEY REP checking stock there to see if she knew about it.

BB> Do you have a DVD called Gargoyles?

DISNEY REP> What's that?

BB> Well...

DISNEY REP> What kind of movie is it?

BB> It's a T.V. Show.

DISNEY REP> I'm just the DISNEY REP. I don't know about non Disney stuff.

BB> It IS a Disney show.

DISNEY REP> Oh really? I'll go check my book. *Waits A few minutes* OH Yah! It is comming out today...

SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IF WAS COMMING OUT TODAY. SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW GARGOYLES WAS DISNEY!!!

ARRGH!

But I still got it at my local Future Shop ^_^

That is all I will say.

As of 7pm this evening
the amazon.ca ranking for the Gargs DVD fell back to #18 - but hey, still top 20!

Can't beat that. Well, I suppose we could but I already ordered 5 copies. 2 of which I'm keeping and the rest are Christmas presents. Which one of us wouldn't wanna find a Gargoyle under our Christmas trees(or for that matter, instead of the trees). ^_^. Santa-I want Goliath for Christmas!

Ok, I'm gettin' silly now, I'll stop-but I dont wanna have to wait for my copy. I'd go and buy one but we're getting a freezing rain storm...if I had skates I suppose I could skate to best buy and get one.....

Just got back from Best Buy with my 2nd copy of the DVD (the first was ordered this morning from Amazon). I looked in all the logical places first, like "New Releases" and "Disney DVD", but couldn't find it. So I went up to the clerk to ask and she said "Gargoyles? Ummm..." But then another customer who was standing nearby (and who bore an uncanny resemblance to CrzyDemona's husband) said "The cartoon, right? It's over here." And then he led me over to the "Sci-Fi / Horror" section of the television DVD aisle and pulled it off the shelf for me. There were only four copies left.

And that's my little "In search of the Gargoyles DVD" adventure.

Ok folks, I got a chance to watch the DVDs and I have to say Disney did a TOP NOTCH job on them! The menus are AWESOME! The entire thing is animated. They even used the original TV theme (Not the one used in the show, but the one that uses the woodwind instruments.) which IMO is the best one of them all. My only beef is that when the gargs "awaken" on the menu, Bronx has Demona's "scream" instead of his own. Still, its a VERY MINOR problem that can easily be ignored. The "Sneak Peaks" menu item you all saw was the choice to watch the "Aladdin Trilogy" "Bionocle 2" and "Spiderman" trailers again. The only bonus feature on the first disk is the audio commentary track for the pilot episodes. I haven't had a chance to watch all of it yet since I had to goto Orientation at the University of Memphis today so I'll write up a final version when I get done. So far, job WELL DONE Disney! You've restored my faith in your company. :)

Went down to Blockbuster Video (the one within walking distance of my apartment) today; they didn't have any copies of the Gargoyles DVD, but I finally persuaded the check-out clerk to order one for me. Should be in next week.

As a piece of side-news, I got an unexpected treat of a delivery in the mail today - the one-volume edition of "Bone" by Jeff Smith, which is a lot of fun. (When I read it, incidentally, I find myself mentally casting Gilbert Godfried as the voice of Phoney Bone.)

Well, I just got back from searching the city for a copy of the dvd. Nobody had one and now, I don't have one. *sigh*

Get this, Walmart had a sticker for it out this morning (11:30), but there were no dvds out. I figured they hadn't put it out yet (there was a big ole pile of boxes with stuff in it). I went back after work (5:15). Not only was there no dvds, but the sticker had been removed! I asked about it and the worker said that they may have it, but haven't unpacked it yet. Said that they had a lot of stuff to unpack.

That's kinda funny to me, though. If you have it and just haven't unpacked it yet, why remove the sticker? *double-sigh*

Guess I'll just have to wait on the amazon order. Oh well, maybe Walmart sold out.

Just got back from the Amazon my friends -- went their via the Gathering 2005 site at www.gatheringofthegargoyles.com -- where I purchased my copy of the GARGOYLES SEASON ONE on DVD. I'm pretty excited. Nervous too.

I want to thank all of you who are supporting this product. Supporting this property, this fandom and my emotional state.

But let's try this. Everybody contact SOMEBODY from the fandom whom you haven't heard from in a while. Someone maybe who attended a Gathering in 1998, maybe. Or someone who used to frequent Station 8, but just sort of drifted off. Search these people down. Odds are they'd love to get the DVD, but if they've been out of the loop, they may not know it's available NOW!!!

If all of you contact just one lost fan, it would really help to spread the word!!

Thanks!

Anonymous>> Goliath doesn't come off as the type to physically "repremand" his charges. I'm sure their discussion of the event involved some stern language, but I tend to think that Goliath let the emotional weight of what happened punish Broadway more than he could.

Alex: "Recent and historical sales", eh? Sounds like they've been sure to make it clear as mud. :) Thanks for the info though.

Gorebash: Thanks for the pictures! I don't suppose they'll be delivered here for some weeks yet so it's nice to see. It looks very nicely designed. I like the art on the inserts, and it's great to see those features there.

Only niggle is the spelling "MacBeth" instead of "Macbeth". Of course, these sorts of glitches are probably DVD traditions: my favourite was on the UK (and maybe US) '24' discs which have a clock decoration on the DVD that starts with the 12-hour clock and ends with the 24-hour clock.

Can't wait to see it "in the flesh". :)

HAPPY DVD DAY!

Lynati:<Just what is your point of view?> I already said that I don't share your point of view, so you wouldn't understand it. Your to narrowminded. <I asked you a straightforward question, Vinnie, I didn't quote you or repeat words of yours in a twisted fashion. No one has "shoveled words" into your mouth, not me, not anyone else who has asked you to stop or questioned your motivations.> At least not that you'll admit. <Ridiculing everyone who speaks in other than support of you does not, in fact, make their actions ridiculous...or amateurish. And why do you keep mocking the "low level" of insults you are garnering, do you WANT people to insult you more viciously?> I didn't start anything all I wanted was to post my countdown, but it was your the constant Whining in this CR that actually worked me up. Maybe I did get a little crazy but this CR does that with it's whiners for tradition whenever it suits their purpose.

<But is it attention for the DVD that you want, or attention for yourself?> The DVD definitely! <With a daily countdown already ongoing in both Comment Rooms, it has enough CR publicity.> There can never be enough publicity. <If you really wanted to help sales I'd suggest focusing your energy in printing up fliers mentioning the DVD release and posting physical copies around where you live, and stop flooding the rooms with unnecesary repetition of something patrick has well in hand.> Who says I'm not printing up fliers?

<You said Ask Greg, why would anyone assume you meant a system that was *no longer in place* as opposed to one that has been up for months? and insulting someone's intelligence for your lack of explanation is really...it really doesn't reflect well on you, Vinnie. I am just about to purchase the Gargoyles DVD Season 1 set. I don't know if anyone's reading this around the afternoon. The comment room was the first place I thought to join in celebrating the release of the Gargoyles set. When the Gathering approached, I didn't know whether to make plans or save the cash to go. The casual interest in Gargoyles that aired on TV I remember happening after 2003. That's when I noticed web sites created for the Gathering 04. My casualness started to flicker into a torch during the summer, I only became totally understanding this after this year's October 1st airing of 10 episodes. I had to see the whole month of marathons (and all were recorded but a pre-recorded set is far more desirable, for picture quality and eliminating those TV bugs) and I couldn't expect how much fun it was. I have seen from the web sites the experience overall the fandom seems just as high as my feeling. Let's talk.

Call me stupid, but how does one search by rank on the Amazon site. I see the top 100, but it doesn't go beyond that. any suggestions-I wanna watch how this goes.

A lot of the fans got into the DVD, very cool stuff.

Those of you who want to see what the goods look like, I've scanned the cover, insert and discs and you can view them by clicking on my name.

I've watched the con featurette and a few bits of Awakenings 1, and the thing that stands out the most for me is the quality of the audio versus watching it on tape or TV. This is very sweet, and it'd be really awesome to see the second season on DVD.

Hi :)
I just wanted to let you know that the German fans also try to support the show as good as they can. Some of us already ordered the DVD at Amazon.com, others will in the next days.
I hope, we can help at least a little :)

My DVD shipped on Saturday (Dec 04)

Yes, I'm a bad person and ordered it a few months ago, but I had to make sure that the order included another limited DVD and shipping to overseas is just too expensive to do it single item.

#151 now in the DVD category.

FYE was a bust... the location near my office didn't get any of their shipment of new releases in today, and they seemed really pissed about it too. The clerk I talked to had been waiting for "Gargoyles" himself, and I wasn't the first person today who'd been in to look for it.

Guess that means its on to Best Buy after work.

Well, here's my contribution to the "Get Out The Sales" effort. Click my name.

This was originally supposed to be a review of the DVD, but unfortunately, I couldn't get a preview copy in time. I wanted to make sure we had something up in time for the actual release, so this was my solution. I'll still be doing a review, but it'll have to wait until I get back from vacation. I didn't end up mentioning Station 8; it seemed unecessary after I tossed my first draft and I was still concerned about flooding "Ask Greg". I did include a link to the Gathering site, since I figured they'd have no problem with a little extra traffic.

The store hunt starts when I get off work. I'm also picking up about five copies from Amazon for various people.

Patrick: Does that list of top DVDs give numbers though? I mean, it could just be that there's a lot more competition than there was before compared to a few weeks ago. Still, if it's one of Disney's strongest performers in a competitive environment that has to be a plus.

Gorebash (and also for those who couldn't/haven't grabbed an immediate copy)>> The Gathering featurette is very nice. It has tight editing, a good structure and plenty of fan interviews. They did a really good job with it - definitely something worth bragging to non-fandom friends over.

Yay!! Today's the day!! Everyone, buy the DVD like you've never bought before! :D

The Amazon Sales Rank right now is 276. You can find it right below the star rating and the number of reviews. I've been watching it every day, and the highest we've gone is 109... that was sometime in September, I think. It dropped to 5,000 at one point, but it stayed at 400-500 for most of November and December.

So yeah... let's try to get that DVD on that Top 100 Sellers list!! :D I'd buy it from Amazon, too, but I don't have a credit card. Damn it!

I'll be stopping by the local Blockbuster Video to purchase a copy sometime this morning; I just hope that they'll have it in stock. (And after I buy it, I'm going to have to look around for DVD players, since I still don't have one.)

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch made not a mention of the release in its DVD section; the big focus was on "Bill Hicks Live", with lesser attention given to 24 and Matrix releases. (Though I didn't really expect that much attention being given to "Gargoyles" by them anyway.)

I've been eyeing that beautifully packaged Aladdin deluxe edition too. I hear they're going to release a boxed set of the three films though, so I'll probably hold out for that (the sequels aren't as great as the original, but along with the *sometimes* impressive TV series that takes place after The Return of Jafar, they make up a favorite Disney franchise of mine).

All right, I'm doing my part today. I posted at Television Without Pity, hopefully find a few more places to post (AGAIN most likely, though it probably won't be too annoying since I haven't done the rounds for Gargoyles since October) and I'll be ordering off of Amazon.com. I should probably order from Amazon.CA instead since I can buy from them in Canadian dollars and receive free shipping too if I buy a few books along with the DVD set, but I don't think that would add to Amazon.com's sales figures. And Amazon.ca's Gargoyles sales figures probably won't be watched by Disney since there're just less people in Canada and the sales won't be as great.

I'll copy/paste Greg's latest post to everywhere I post the news since desperation/encouragement from the creator usually helps.

Ooh, I just realized I can probably zip over to Wallmart or the mall before work to get the DVDs if I really don't wanna wait until tonight.

WAHHH!!!

I SAW the box for the SW... 24 season 3 was ON THE FLOOR (like, on the shelves)

Nothing of the new releases was cleared... nothing.

I saw boxes that said "RELEASE DATE DEC 7, PENALTY IF OUT BEFORE THEN" inside one was Carnavel (or whatever). Inside another was a thick box with anime-ish graphics on the side....

I figure it was one of the bottom boxes... I would've gone through them (there were no workers in the area... at all) but I didn't feel like it. :\

I got there at 12:30.. and wandered. I left at 2:10. Now I'm here at 2:30 (10 mins to walk from car to room).

:\

I did ask someone at like.. 2.. where it was... "Oh I don't know... stock's normally put up during day shift." grrr...

At least I got the other stuff I needed....

Oh.. I did see one thing on the shelves... the Aladdin Special Limited Edition Box thing.... is it worth the $40? Granted it might not be there tomorrow (though it was there today... from 5:30p on til 2:30a....) but general thoughts on it???

Instead of running around tomorrow night.

I'll probably still run around tommorrow night.

Hmm... If I leave NOW I'll get there right at Midnight..

when I was in there at 6pm, they didn't have the shelves cleared at all.. nothing. I know they'll put out the Matrix box and various other things before they even think about Gargoyles... hmm... *twiddles thumbs*

I really wonder if they'll have it.... when Halo 2 came out, a friend and I went to get it (for her) and it took them 10-20 mins after midnight to get it out on the floor. it was funny. heh :D

Hello Kristen. I haven't been around in a while so I haven't had a chance to get familiar with the fresh faces. As to your question: I know it sounds like a cope out, but it is entirely up to you. If you feel you can write it one way more convincingly than another then do so. That's the beauty of fiction you can do what you like.

FYI> It has been a while so I'm not sure if this has changed, but usually discussion in this CR steers clear of fanfics. I'm sure the more active members can post a link to forums and CRs that are more germane to your literary pursuits. Anyone can feel free to correct me.

Sad as it may be, I took a trip to the 2 closest WalMarts. Neither had the DVD out, but one did have their "New Releases" section empty and the signs already posted where tomorrow's releases would be on display. This particular store had the DVD listed at $15.95 I believe, which I did to a double-take on.

I'll be buying 10 or so copies from amazon tomorrow morning, but I plan on making an afternoon trip to get an immediate copy. I'll double-check that price then.

Vinnie: [Well that depends on your point of view, and I don't share your point of view!]
Just what is your point of view?

[I never said that, but then again people like you seem to like shoveling words into other peoples mouths.] I asked you a straightforward question, Vinnie, I didn't quote you or repeat words of yours in a twisted fashion. No one has "shoveled words" into your mouth, not me, not anyone else who has asked you to stop or questioned your motivations. Ridiculing everyone who speaks in other than support of you does not, in fact, make their actions ridiculous...or amateurish. And why do you keep mocking the "low level" of insults you are garnering, do you WANT people to insult you more viciously? The comment rooms generally have a policy against personal flames, and have actually been doing really well recently in not breaking it. Or possibly people just lack an "incredible amount of time" on their hands in which to do nothing else but think up witty insults for someone who wouldn't be able to truly appreciate them or respond in kind*.

*Ironic, isn't it? ; )

[It does get attention though!] But is it attention for the DVD that you want, or attention for yourself? With a daily countdown already ongoing in both Comment Rooms, it has enough CR publicity. If you really wanted to help sales I'd suggest focusing your energy in printing up fliers mentioning the DVD release and posting physical copies around where you live, and stop flooding the rooms with unnecesary repetition of something patrick has well in hand.

[I was referring to the old setup at 'Ask Greg', but then your propbably not smart enough to realise that]
You said Ask Greg, why would anyone assume you meant a system that was *no longer in place* as opposed to one that has been up for months? and insulting someone's intelligence for your lack of explanation is really...it really doesn't reflect well on you, Vinnie. Especially when you speak in present tense "I don't" - not *didn't* - "have time to go through the list" when the only list available to go through is the new system one.

Patrick>> Methinks Wal-Mart's big enough at this point to establish its own time zone if it so wants to.

Although,

Vertigo1>> Your Wal-Mart must have pre-empted. I was at the Bristol -Mart a couple of hours ago and all they had was space cleared in the "New Release" section; but the price tag had the release date set at 12/*06*/04, so perhaps there was confusion in places. Though, as you said, not that there's any reason to complain ;)

In any event, guess where I'm going to be at midnight...

Well, guys, tomorrow -- December 7th, 2004 -- is the big day. The GARGOYLES first season comes out on DVD.

I know I'm preaching to the converted, but I can't emphasize enough how important it is to the fandom that this DVD sells well.

Good sales on the first day, particularly a nice Amazon turnout, are important, but what's more important are PHENOMENAL SALES over the next month or two.

If you can't get it at Amazon, get it somewhere else.

If you can't get it tomorrow, get it soon.

But get it. And more than that get everyone you know to get it.

Get strangers to get it.

Yes, I know we're all a bit disappointed in the way Disney has somewhat failed to support the DVD with advertising. But as I've always maintained... the burden is on the fans. They need to prove to Disney that Disney needs to spend money to make money on Gargoyles.

They need to prove to Disney that the fandom is rabid and large and ready to support the property with actual dollars and cents.

A very small part of me feels bad about asking you to spend money. But keep in mind if this DVD doesn't do EXTREMELY well, it will be very difficult to convince Disney to support the property in other ways -- including a second season on DVD, let alone new and original material set in the Gargoyles Universe.

By the way, we did get a nice write-up here:

http://www.silverbulletcomicbooks.com/rage/index1.htm

Check it out.

But mostly, take advantage of this opportunity to demonstrate your love for the show. Again this is NOT just about money. This is about SPREADING THE WORD WITH RELIGIOUS FERVOR!!!

Good luck to us all.

Anywho, the story is set in May/June 2003 (around the time of the Buffy series finale), so in the Gargverse it'd be quite a few years since Gargoyles were kinda accepted back into society.

What I'm wondering is, do you think Demona could've gone down the path of redemption within *counts on fingers* about 6 years? I mean, she's had centuries to build up this hatred to humans. Do you think it's possible this could be resolved within 6 years, or do you think she'd still have a harsh tone (not necessarily bitter hatred) towards humans?

So far she's only talking with one human, and it's a friendly relationship (a bartender at a demon bar). I'm wondering if she's being out of character by the way she talks to him in my story. I have no idea.

So please, any feedback on this would be good. Thanks.

Hey, everyone.

If your local store is acting clueless, print out their web site's listing for the DVD and take it in with you. If they don't have it in stock, that should at least be enough to clue them in that they do have the ability to order it.

I did some quick surfing around, and every place I checked had it listed on their web site. That includes Best Buy, Blockbuster, Wal-Mart, Target, and FYE.

Just a few hours left until December 7th!

Vashkoda: Thank you, on both accounts :)

Walmart: I was at one not too long ago (an hour) and I looked through the DVDs.. didn't see it. Gotta love Alabama... unlike one time I might actually be near-last to get it! hah!... I think I'll end up at BB getting it, though.. more likely to carry it. :)

Prices: Though looking at that list.. I might hit up Walmart on the way up to BB & Target.... heh.

Sam Goody: hmm... I'm not one to think of looking for tv show dvds there... because it's a music store... plain and simple. heh. True they do have some of the more popular cultish type shows that are good for humor, but I wouldn't count on SG carrying them ;)

PATRICK - After that stunt of Puck's, he'd better make certain that he doesn't run into Demona while he's Owen and away from Alexander so that he can't use the "training/protecting clause"; there's no way that she's ever going to forgive that little stunt of his. (Actually, I don't think that there's anything that Demona believes in forgiving.)

Re St. Nicholas/Santa Claus: I'm still a bit surprised that he would have made an appearance in "Gargoyles", since I find it hard to imagine him in a serious adventure setting - though he did also make an appearance in an episode of the "Men in Black" animated series. (In it, his elves were aliens, but Santa himself wasn't - as Agent Kay put it, there are some things bigger than even the Men in Black.)

If St. Nick is a Child of Oberon, he'd obviously need special permission from Oberon to leave Avalon on Christmas Eve to make those rounds. But I suspect that the Santa Claus of the Gargoyles Universe is something else entirely.

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a series of letters purportedly from Father Christmas (the British version of Santa Claus) for his children in the 1920's and 1930's, dealing with his adventures at the North Pole, which have since been published. In them, his chief assistant was an accident-prone polar bear, in whose wake disaster always seemed to happen. For example, Father Christmas's hood gets blown off by the wind and winds up on top of the North Pole; Polar Bear climbs up the Pole to retrieve the hood, the North Pole breaks under his weight, Polar Bear falls into Father Christmas's house, making a big mess. Or Polar Bear is sniffing about in the cellars, finds the master switch to the Aurora Borealis and turns it on much more full-blast than it's supposed to go - the Northern Lights burst forth with such intensity that the moon falls out of the sky and the Man in the Moon lands in Father Christmas's garden. Or Polar Bear insists on taking a much bigger load of Christmas presents down the stairs than he can actually carry - I leave you to imagine what happened next. Gradually, other characters became involved, including the obligatory elves as workshop assistants, and raids from the goblins who want to steal Father Christmas's toys (they especially like carrying off toy trains and railway sets). The letters have since been published, and are worth reading (they should be in all good bookstores around this time of year - Tolkien's being the author obviously helps with the sales).

More recently, a chap named Jeff Guinn published an amusing little book entitled "The Autobiography of Santa Claus" covering Santa Claus's adventures from his days as St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, to the present day, narrating his evolution into the familiar figure of today, including the part where St. Nick has to solve the problem of how to come up with eight flying reindeer after Clement St. Moore popularized the notion in his poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (also known as "The Night Before Christmas"). One of his assistants in the book, incidentally, is King Arthur, who actually joined forces with Santa after the Battle of Camlann here (and even runs the local toy workshop in London before Santa decides to relocate all of his operations to the North Pole; the two of them befriend Charles Dickens in the 19th century, and serve alongside Mrs. Claus as the initial audience for Dickens' first draft of "A Christmas Carol" - the three of them like the story, though Mrs. Claus advised Dickens to make one minor alteration, changing the name of Bob Cratchit's little lame son from "Little Fred" to "Tiny Tim").

One final seasonal thought: what if somebody tried to get Bronx to wear one of those "antler headsets" that they sometimes make for dogs and cats? (I seriously doubt, of course, that Bronx would be at all cooperative.)

No idea, but I'm not complaining because they put the DVDs on the shelf a day early. Best Buy has done the same thing with Farscape and Stargate SG-1 DVDs in the past.

What I find funny is that Sams Club ISN'T carrying Gargoyles....seeing as Wal-Mart owns them, you'd think they'd carry the same stock of DVDs.

Hi folks. Just popping in to say that I went looking for the DVD just now and when I asked about it at Sam Goody, the two guys behind the counter said that they loved the series and would buy it, but that it was not on their list at all. I said, it's coming out tomorrow. They were like, well, its not on our list.

Great, just great. I hope my Wal-mart carries it, or I'll be waiting on the Amazon shipment.

I haven't been around much lately; school is, as I said earlier, trying very hard to kill me. But I did want to say how happy I've been at the level of publicity the GargoylesDVD site has been getting. I set out to spread the word, but you guys spread the link so far! As of this minute we've had 291 unique visitors since October 19th (a glitch in my server lost the count before that date), and, if my stats can be believed, from 24 different countries! That's awesome! In the last six days alone we've had 49 visitors.

Three cheers to everyone who's helped spread the word, either by sharing the gargoylesdvd.com link or just by telling your friends about the DVD! We've come so far! Tomorrow's going to be awesome.

Guys, he's already admitted twice that he's only doing this for attention. So stop paying attention to him. He's not going to listen anyway and will just keep insulting whoever talks to him every chance he gets. And here I thought he was a nice guy, but I was wrong.

Now really, let's drop the subject. It's not worth it. Besides, we have more important things to care about, like the Gargoyles DVD.

On a lighter note, the DVD's coming tomorrow!! Finally, after all these years! I hope I'll be able to find it here in Puerto Rico. Maybe Wal-Mart, or Blockbuster...

We have 130 reviews. It's highly unlikely that we'll reach 150 by tomorrow, but hey, we've got 130! But it's not too late to leave a review if you haven't already! And don't forget to pre-order tomorrow through the Gathering website!

Whoohoo! Just less than 10 hours until December 7!!!! Can you tell I'm excited? I survived my midterm, now I just have to survive the rest of the day (supposing I don't die from the sushi I'm gonna eat for lunch, considering it's raw fish (stupid health and safety people don't know what they're talking about)).

Anyway, enough of that ramble. Just thought I'd come in and say hi to everyone, and to say that we should all buy as many copies of the DVD as possible (although we're all planning on doing that anyways).

Guess maybe I should stop rambling before I make a fool out of myself (although I'm guessing I've already done that... including in this one... *sigh* oh well, at least it's fun doing it!!).

In case I don't get to come and visit again before the day... Merry Christmas!! And Happy Holidays to those of you who don't celebrate Christmas! (I would type them out, but my spelling's horrible, and I wouldn't want to upset anyone by misspelling their festival.)

To the annoying poster - Really, I had a different way of handling it in the old system. Really simple HTML editing plus a massive search-and-replace enabled me to keep track of the number of each question in the backlog. In the old system, I could download the entire backlog, do the minimal html edits, and do the massive search-and-replace to have each question numbered in under 20 minutes. From there, it was a simple matter of finding each question and determining what number it was.

Long-time lurker and occasional poster here with a question: is it better for the sales to buy the DVD set from Amazon.com, or would it be better to actually go to a store and buy the DVD's? On the one hand, if the stores lose their DVD's quickly, then they'll think it's a hot item and order more. On the other hand, if the stores are sold-out, then that might mean that a lot of people who would have bought the set had they seen it would not have a chance, and I know we'll all buy it no matter what. Actually, I may simply decide this based on which one's cheaper, which I'm betting is Amazon. Hmm... maybe I should just skulk around Best Buy and try to convince passers-by to get it...

On another note, looking at the topic of discussion, I found a nice article about the evolution of the Santa Claus image. It has a lot of good information, including a debunking of the myth that Coca-Cola invented the modern image. Click on my name to go there.

Santa Claus / St. Nicholas / Kris Kringle > I kind of like the idea that the job and the title passes from person to person over time, like the Dreadpirate Roberts and James Bond 007. I suppose there must be a fair amount of magic involved, too. Jolly Old St. Nick would have to be able to warp the fabric of space-time itself to get all those stops made in one night.

"Sanity" Clause> I'm inclined to belive that Greg would have used "St. Nicholas" as opposed to "Santa Clause." But then again I can see an Oberon Child who adapted themself to the legend of the real saint. I don't know why they would do that, because most of them *puck excuded* don't like humans.

That is all I will say.

"You can't fool me; There ain't no Sanity Clause."> (Apologies to the Marx Brothers) A long, long, loooong time ago, there was a discussion in the Comment Room about how Mr. Claus might be handled in the "Gargoyles" universe. Based on how Macbeth's backstory was handled in "City of Stone", we generally guessed that "Gargoyles" Santa might be based more on the original St. Nicholas with a few of the later parts of the legend and possibly a gargoyles or two thrown in as well. So I'd expect some alterations to the modern version of Santa. Maybe he'd be dressed in the more traditional furs as opposed to the red and white suit, since that little detail was brought to the world courtesy of the Coca-Cola company. That being said, I'm not sure the censors will allow St. Nick to restore three boys to life post-murder and pickling (one of the saint's miracles performed).

I think the elves probably evolved out of the "helper figures" that Santa seemed to pick up in various legends. Frequently, these assistants to St. Nick took on the job of handing out the non-toys to children who had been bad. The elves are also a convenient answer to the question of how Santa makes all those toys in time.

I'm guessing the reindeer just provided a convenient means of propulsion for the sleigh. Their ability to fly may have come later on as the Santa legend grew in popularity and Santa had to travel farther while still making all his deliveries in one night. I also tend to think of them as a rather exotic mode of transportation, though that may not be the case in the part of the world where the reindeer story originated.

"Exotic mode of transportation>" I wonder....Nah, too silly.

::Demonskrye lets the thought hang and leaves the Comment Room, trying hard to get the image of a gargoyle-draw sleigh out of her mind.::

Patrick -- I can only imagine the blackmail Puck used to force Demona into that get-up. It's enough to make me feel sorry for her. :D

Speaking of spiking Amazon, I'd like to reiterate an issue that Patrick and Abby raised last week. Patrick wondered whether an Amazon order placed right after midnight *Eastern Time* on December 7 (tomorrow) would be recorded by Amazon as a December 7 sale. Abby pointed out that Amazon is headquartered in Seattle, and therefore operates on Pacific Time. A perusal of the Amazon web site does indeed show that the company's auction services are based on Pacific Time, as is its ordering advice for holiday delivery. As a result, I'm inclined to believe that any orders for the Gargoyles DVD placed before midnight *Pacific Time* will be recorded by Amazon as preorders dated December 6. Anyone have any thoughts/further information/clarification?

I was wondering whether you'd find a way of working in an "Annie" parody on the day before the DVD's release, Patrick - and now my suspicions have been confirmed.

Today, December 6, is St. Nicholas's day, commemmorating a 4th century bishop in Asia Minor noted for his generosity who wound up becoming the historical original of Santa Claus. I still wonder on occasion just what that Santa Claus story that Greg Weisman had planned to produce for "Gargoyles" would have been like.

To the annoying poster - It is really easy with the current Ask Greg system to keep track, especially since you can search through the unanswered questions and it's pretty easy to keep track of how far back a particulat question is in line. July 24, 2003 (Question #585 out of 641) is the last Gathering 2003 Journal. The 1st one is 5 from the top. 641-584 = 57 questions until the last Gathering 2003 journal hits. Probably not going to happen this year. But it will happen next year. :-)
