I think they should preview what happened after journey's then up to now. Elisa would be in her thirties, xanatos 50's if we were to follow 10 years later. And goliath would be a year older i think.

Regarding casting of a theoretical Gargoyles live-action/CGI film...doesn't it make sense that Salli Richardson would play Elisa? Let's say Gargoyles gets greelit and starts extensive pre-production in the next few months, filming begins in 2006 and the movie debuts in 2007. Richardson would be 40 by then, but she could still pass for younger than that, she still looks like she's in her prime. There's no reason plot-wise for Elisa to be 27, she could be in her mid-thirties or even 40 if they like. Same goes for Xanatos. He's 40 at the beginning of the series, Jonathan Frakes is 52 or so right now, but who says he needs to be 40?

As for the rest of the cast, have the same actors who voiced non-human characters in the series do so for the film as well.

John Rhys-Davies COULD play Macbeth, but if they wanted to be true to the look of the animated model he'd need to slim down and maybe bulk up considerably. Otherwise I really wouldn't be opposed to a recast.

No reason they couldn't model Demona after Marina Sirtis...just in case they ever got around to the changing-human detail if the movie ever became a franchise (it would be smart to have that detail in there, since I believe the films would take on some of the themes of the TV series, ie racism, and having one of the main villains become exactly what she hates most...Well, it was a stroke of genius when they did that in the series, it may as well be implemented in the films as well). Marina Sirtis has great definition in her face, sharp features just the way most characters' faces were drawn on Gargoyles, so I think with a really good wig or dye job, she could make an awesome live-action Demona.

Tom Wilson's a good actor, seen him in a few bit roles, but I think Matt Bluestone would require recasting if they used him in the movies.

Kate Mulgrew's would be a shoe-in as Anastasia Renard/Titania if the films made it to portaying the Fey.

No idea for Owen. Someone who wears glasses well and can be stuffy. I'm thinking Alexis Denisof who played Wesley on Buffy & Angel, but then I think of the earlier pratfall years of the character. Maybe wouldn't be able to buy into him being constantly cool and collected as Owen.

As for director, oh man, so many possibilities.

Ridley Scott mostly because of Alien and Legend (especially because of Legend), but would you believe I've never seen a second of Blade Runner despite loving film?

Joss Whedon (natch). Paired with Greg Weisman as writer, or having the two of them co-write...that'd be a fantasy fulfilled.

Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For a Dream, Pi, the upcoming The Fountain).

How 'bout Danny Boyle? He seems to be all over the map when it comes to the genres he's willing to work in (Trainspotting--to tie in nicely by giving it that Scottish touch--A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, 28 Days Later, and the upcoming Millions). Has an interesting directing style...

Ang Lee?

Tim Burton. I'm afraid he might favor quirk and style over substance though. Don't get me wrong, I think Edward Scissorhands is his coup de grace, Big Fish had some great stuff going on despite a few minor flaws, Batman (and I suppose Batman Returns) were beautifully dark superhero films, and Mars Attacks! had perfect humor...but then there's that Planet of the Apes remake and Sleepy Hollow (I liked Sleepy Hollow okay, just didn't think it was anything special). Hmm...

While Jon Canmore must clearly have been in a strongly troubled state by the end of "Hunter's Moon", I don't think that we need to invoke a multiple personality disorder to account for his different appearance as Castaway. That was more likely simply a necessary "make-over", due to the fact that he needed to adopt a new public identity in starting up the Quarrymen, with Jon Canmore being wanted for helping to blow up the 23rd precinct police station.

More significantly, the Jon Canmore = Castaway equation strikes me as crucial to Castaway. With it, he acquires a motivation for his actions. Without it, he feels like just a gargoyle-hater springing up out of nowhere for the purpose of providing the gargoyles with a new "main antagonist" now that Xanatos isn't after them any more.

I suspect that the new production team for the Goliath Chronicles didn't focus on Castaway's being Jon Canmore because they wanted to concentrate on the racism issues - and Jon's motivation for going after the gargoyles isn't racism but a combination of adherence to a pointless family vendetta and being too weak to face the fact that he'd seriously injured his brother. If you're going to embark on curing Jon of his hatred for the gargoyles, the issue isn't going to be "different doesn't mean bad", but "take responsibility for your actions rather than blaming them on someone else".

JADE GRIFFIN> Canmore and Castaway are definetly the same. The character model was the same, they just changed the hair and added the mustache, I believe Greg Guler said this at one of the Gatherings.

Same initials. John Castaway - Jon Canmore. Castaway had three red slashes behind his Quarryman symbol.

And in "The Journey" when Castaway lost his temper, he switched from his phony English accent into his real Scottish accent. And we've seen in "Hunter's Moon" that Jon is perfectly capable of changing his accent. He also knew Goliath by name.

But yes, their voice actors were different, but that was because Scott Cleverdon (who voiced Jon Canmore) was not available to do the episode (same thing with Marina Sirtis not voicing Margot in that ep) so they brought in Alan Cumming and he did the voice.

As for the last twelve episodes of "Goliath Chronicles". The knew producers either didn't realize they were meant to be the same or just didn't care. I'm leaning towards the latter as they did have Greg as a consultant, but they almost always ignored his advice.

Hm... On the cannon vs. non-Greg cannon, I have one comment. It never sit with me that Canmore and Castaway were the same. Ppl take it for granted but that would mean the guy'd have a total mental breakdown and adopt a split personality. Castaway has a british kinda accent very different from Canmore's. Does anyone know if it is the same voice actor? Curious. Don't care how crazy they both are. To me, they are two different ppl. If Greg says they're the same, I'll ask about the second personality and if there is a third, a scared little boy wanting his dad back and cowering in a corner afraid of 'monsters' and see what he says... It just never sat well with me.

Not Gargoyles, but I have a new video. Click my name of a Doc Ock video. I was experimenting with a new program and its FX. At times it looks neat and others poor quality. I need to fix it, but with my monitor fuzzing and being I already had to do it over twice because of computer problems, I haven't the patience.

Also I am making a new video that will be a very big complilation, including Gargoyles, but it won't just be Gargoyles. It's a surprise :) Give me at least a week on it. As I said, it's big. It involves getting clips off different VHS and DVD and that alone takes me several days.

Was wondering if anyone had the 1997 t-shirt design of Brookyln going "Yo, Taxi!"

I saw the design on the footage that they put for the Gathering on the DVD, and just thought that it was really cool.

Plus, I was thinking of getting it as a tattoo :)

Re Todd's Cannon Explanation> Yah, I'd agree with that. I "Asked Greg" once if he included the comics, "Disney Adventures," or those "Sky Box" trading cards as cannon. He said nope to ALL of them. So that only leaves what Todd said.

Re the DVD> I watched the Spider Man 2 DVD today, and I saw that it has these "pop up" factoids (trivia that pops up on the screen. I think that would be way cool for each episode of any future DVD releases.

That is all I will say.

In terms of "Gargoyles-canon", I'd go for the following levels:

1. The 66 episodes actually made by Greg count as definitely canon. Although some of the information given in those episodes may not strictly be canon, since some of the things said in one episode later on turn out not to be true after all. (As in, it appears at the end of "Awakening Part One" that Demona was killed in the massacre, but it turns out that she wasn't. Xanatos claims in "Awakening Part Two" that the eggs are all gone - it turns out that they aren't. Demona gives a false story in "Awakening Part Four" that "City of Stone" proves to be wrong. The Archmage appears to fall to his death in "Long Way Till Morning - it turns out in "Avalon" that he survived. And so on.)

2. Things that Greg reveals at "Ask Greg". These will have to be taken with a grain of salt, since Greg can always change his mind (as in shifting his "sequel-series" from 2158 to 2198). Not to mention that if Greg got to do the series again, there'd probably still wind up a few changes in the process of making the fresh episodes (such as when he originally thought of having the Magus volunteer to put the sleeping spell on Goliath and one of his bosses said, "No, have Goliath get so depressed about being the only gargoyle left that he asks the Magus to put the spell on him.").

I'd certainly go with the Jon Canmore = Castaway theory anyway, since it gives an explanation for why Castaway's doing what he does. Without it, he seems more like an anti-gargoyle nut who popped up just so that the series could have a new antagonist. (Of course, the fact that "Castaway" begins with a hard C got the warning bells ringing in my ears from the time that I first saw "The Journey".)

I take non-Greg revelations from Disney with a large grain of salt, and fanfic likewise. They're often amusing, but I don't view them as even remotely canon.

In the "Guide to the Gargoyles Universe", I had all the information from "Ask Greg" in brackets, to distinguish it from the information directly from the series.

I don't have images of all of them... but I've got 1999, 2001, both shirts from 2003, and 2004. Link below.

The 1997 t-shirt had Brooklyn going "Yo, Taxi" and a caption that said "Prepare to be surprised." The 1998 shirt had line art silhouttes of Goliath and the trio. The 2002 shirt... um... I can't remember, but I'll pull my shirts out and look. Everything has been full color since 1999, though. So it actually kind of disappoints me that this year's won't be.

Kathy-- True, this fandom IS blessed with an inordinate amount of talent all-around, but "stand[ing] a chance of being a masterpiece" doesn't alwasy equal "IS a masterpiece," and previous t-shirt designs have been pretty close to masterpieces. ^_- I'm just hoping that this year's staff is going to hold the t-shirt contest entries to the same standard of excellence as previous years, is all. I know that may sound terribly harsh and a wee bit elitist, but if I'm going to shell out the money for a Gathering t-shirt, I'd like it to be something that kicks ass and that I'd feel proud to wear again and again after the convention is over; something that other people will look at and say "Whoa! Cool shirt! Gathering of the Gargoyles? What's that?" Yanno?

PATRICK> Ah, levels of canon. Something I've often thought about.

As far as "Gargoyles" goes, here are my levels of canon for it. You can feel free to agree or disagree.

1. The series itself... From "Awakening Part One" to "The Journey". Can't argue with what you see on screen... unless say for example, who ever custom made Sevarius's suitcase mispelled his name and he decided to use it anyway ;)

2. Ask Greg, Greg's plans aren't canon yet. Close, but not yet. Even he's said so. But for episodic details and stuff, he's a primary source. Also, if he says John Castaway and Jon Canmore are one and the same (even though we've never seen it on screen), of course we believe that to be the case, something like that is canon.

3. Other Disney source material. Depends, some of that was put together by people not as familiar with the show. If it's not outright contradicted by any of the material above... like for example, Elisa's birthday as December 30th... sure, why not. Greg says he doesn't think so, but he hasn't given us a date yet. So, sure. Though on the other hand, Eyrie Building or Aerie Building... Greg says it's Eyrie Building... I believe him.

4. Fan theories... Demona seduced Brooklyn in "Temptation"... sure, why not? ;)

i think Greg has confirmed that Dec 31 is Elisa's birthday, but i know a lot of info on those trading cards was totally false... it really depends more on the information than the source about what is canon, but i good way to look at it is that if Greg says it canon, so do we.

Kathy > Care to share what some of the special treats are? I'm trying to persuade some friends to go this year... but it's not helping my case any to not have more concrete details to share.

An opinion poll > What constitutes "canon" in the "Gargoyles" universe. Is it ONLY the information posted by Greg in "Ask Greg," or does information published in other Disney sources also hold weight? For example, factoids from the trading cards or info in books and magazines that Disney put out during the run of the show... such as the tidbit in the Disney Yearbook 1996 that Elisa's birthday is December 31.

Thank you for your compliments on my videos. I do have 2 anime videos for Mononoke Hime. Click my name to see them. I do plan more. I have tried to find more anime I might like, but no bites yet. I did like Mermaid's Scar (I think it was called that), saw that many moons ago. I do plan on renting Vampire Hunter D and see how that is, but so far, just Mononoke. I might take you up on that and enter those though.
"Ashikata's Lament" is a video I do hold dear. It is by the lead singer of my favorite band, Seven Nations and the song is called "Twelve". It was a friend's favorite song. He passed away several years ago suddenly, so the song makes me sad sometimes. But listening to it one day while my daughter was watching Mononoke it was inspiration. If you haven't already watched it, do so and listen to the lyrics. It is very much Ashitaka's Lament. :)

Though on the actual related topic, it is kind of creepy in Order of the Phoenix when Petunia asks Dudley if Harry threatened him with "his ... his _thing_". Eew.

And I've seen "your" and "you're" switched around ALL the time. Doesn't make someone less then you or stupid. I know you didn't say it does, but it gives that impression. People make mistakes. Even our beloved Gargoyles has animation mistakes. Many of them, usually only seen frame by frame, but that didn't make the animators any less artists. People are people. People tend to make mistakes. We move on. Look at the big picture. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Just noticed the spelling thing...

Todd>If we cared half as much about grammar, I am sure we'd find you making a mistake too. But we don't. Why? Because there are more important things. Like the CONTENT of the post, not the grammar. I was an English Major. I love English. But you know what? I'm not being tested now. My fingers type as fast as my brain comes up with ideas and things to say. Fingers slip or I simply forget or don't know. But so long as my point or the content of my post is getting out there and it's easily readable. I don't care.

When exactly were we being tested on this?

LOTR had a mix of unknowns, up-and-comings, and established actors...

I had heard of roughly 2/3 of the cast before the movies came out. I had also seen works with many of these people in them.

Some that I knew of beforehand: Liv Tyler (Armaggeddon), Elijah Wood (Deep Impact, The Faculty), John Rhys-Davies (Sliders, Gargoyles), Gwyneth Paltrow

Up-and-comings would include Orlando Bloom

There's others I could name, but I can't think of them (as I don't watch for the actors... and I'm not a LOTR film follower type person...)

With Gargoyles, it'd have to be a mix cast... those are the best to use, from all standpoints.

I think most everyone's thought of Sean Connery for MacBeth, too... so.. heh :)

I'd rather get season 2 on DVD first..... :D

My point is that that bit in W.I.T.C.H. struck me as the sort of thing that usually S&P people protest about whenever they come across it in a script for a Saturday morning cartoon. So I was curious as to how it got past them. (And please don't use the word "where" for "were"; I've seen that piece of bad spelling far too often on the Internet.)

Re "Gargoyles" movie: The gargoyles would obviously be CGI; I honestly don't have any strong ideas about the human casting. (Strictly speaking, not all of the LOTR cast were unknowns, by the way - from the perspective of "Gargoyles" fans, John Rhys-Davies certainly wasn't! I certainly wouldn't consider Ian Holm, Ian McKellen, or Christopher Lee unknowns either, for that matter.)

To the best of my knowledge, Elisa was never given a middle name in the series. In fact, the only character ever given a middle name (on screen, at least) was Alex, whose middle name (according to "The Gathering Part One") is Fox.

Is there anyone out there qualified to explain why animated series always seem to have their production teams shuffled around? We all saw how disastrous this can be (The Goliath Chronicles). A lot of my favorite animated shows started out great and went downhill after a season or two with a change in production teams.

Now Greg has turned the tables and is taking over story editing for W.I.T.C.H. season two. Because of his experience with Gargoyles, Greg will no doubt be conscientious of the continuity, but I wonder how many of W.I.T.C.H.'s season one fans will hate what Greg does with season two the way we hate The Goliath Chronicles.

Director: Ridley Scott. He's so good at creating atmosphere that I think he'd do New York at night very well. See Blade Runner.

I think unknowns would be best to play the gargoyles, Elisa, etc. That was how they cast LOTR and it worked beautifully. Although, Laurence Fishburne as Goliath could be interesting...

Okay, random Question: If they were still going to make a Gargoyles movie, who would you pick to direct it and why? Also, who would you pick to star in the roles? The actors who originated the roles are not elegible, bc we would all like to see them portray the roles.

So what does that imply about wizard's duels? Harry and Draco, waving their wands around while their peers look on in rapt attention?

Frued might have a field day with that one. But sometimes a cigar is just a cigar... and sometimes a magic wand is just a conductor's baton with keen special effects. ;)

Hehe I never noticed that either. I think people read to much into movies and cartoons sometimes and find things that really don't mater. I'm sure not many would have known that about the harry potter film unless someone pointed it out to them.

Where as on the W.I.T.C.H show the girls talking about the breasts is an obvious given so they wanted everyone to think these girl cartoon figures where sexy etc..

WHIT - Yes, but it still strikes me as the sort of thing that S&P people would make a big fuss about when it applies to Saturday morning cartoons. And all the more so in view of those reports about how S&P people these days are a lot less understanding then when "Gargoyles" was coming out (in light of Greg Weisman's story about the rejected Loch Ness Monster episode for "Team Atlantis").

Oh, pfft. They're only breasts. Most post-pubertal girls have 'em. It's as clear a "growth" metaphor as Harry Potter playing with his wand under his covers in the film version of Prisoner of Azkaban.

If S&P had called on that, then the larger concern might have been the impacted foreigh objects inpacted in their sigmoid colons.

Well, the main characters of the series are these five young girls who are given the mission of keeping the forces of an evil faerie king from breaking into our world, and have "alter egos" as Guardians. In their alternate forms, they have wings and look a few years older. When they first make their transformation, one of the girls says, looking at her wings, "What have we got behind us?" Another, looking at her chest (which is larger in this form thanks to the "look a few years older" part) says, "What have we got in front of us?" I was surprised that S&P would actually allow a line that would call such attention to certain portions of female anatomy in a Saturday morning cartoon.

I have tried everything. My fiance is a computer tech and he checked it over. It's just hanging onto life support here. We tried the cord thing too. Thanks all for the advice. I do plan to check thrift shops and stuff to find a temp replacment. The monitor is ancient as it is, so it's a shock it lasted THIS long.

But anyways, I've been watching I Love the 90's Part Deux. As much as I hope, I don't think Gargoyles will make it on there. Animaniacs did though. But mainstream wise, they were more popular....just look at the merchandise.

Also, if you click my name and check out the seller's other items link, look for a Gargoyles long sleeve shirt. I posted it today. Unfortunatly, it's only for a young child. My daughter just got her very last wear out of it when Gargs came to DVD....Yes, I sent her to school in it and I told her to tell all her friends to ask their parents for "Gargoyles cartoon"....I have corrupted her so much *rubs hands together*. But my loss (as in her being too big now for the shirt) is another Gargoyles parent's gain. :D I still can't believe how good of condition I was able to keep it in. Because this was how I planned it. I originally bought it off eBay 3 years ago and it was brand new with tags. I let my daughter wear it for 3 years and then I knew if I still had it in good condition, I would resell it on eBay so that another young Gargoyles fan could have it. I usually give the hand-me down clothes to my neices and nephews, but neither they nor their parents appriciate the show as much as my daughter, your guys, or I. I want it to go to someone who actually loves the show. :)

Siren>> My monitor used to get a good chunk of it in the red tones... but it's still working, and is fine. My problem:

I had the monitor sitting NEXT to the outlet that I had my computer plugged into.

If your monitor's doing it on a certain side, check for an outlet in that area, and if possible, unplug anything that's there and move the plugs elsewhere.

My monitor was getting messed up by the active electrical current next to it, thus producing discoloration. I think some major appliances would also screw up the monitor, though I could be wrong.

I hope you figure out what's wrong, or get a new monitor.

Siren > I gave away two old monitors to Purple Heart Veterans right before I moved, so the suggestions to check the thrift stores are good ones. That's where a lot of the donated electronics end up.

Cheap place for a monitor is your local thrift stores. I got a working monitor for five dollars at goodwill. And the money goes to a good cause if you go to one of the charity based thrift stores. Most are smaller or off brands (given away because someone upgraded to something better) but, hey, $5 for a monitor -- can't beat that. Goodwill, at least, allows returns if it doesn't work.

When I got mine, they had dozens of speakers, keyboards, printers, etc. as well, most in the $5-10 range. Used, sure, but if they dont' work, take them back and try again.

Siren, did you try moving the cord? Sometimes if you leave it bent at an angle for any long length of time, the wire will develop an "open circuit" (basically, some of the wiring has a severed or loose connection). If you jiggle it, the display should flicker some if this is the case. If this is the case, and you're one of the lucky people to have a Viewsonic monitor, you can simple replace the cord yourself for like $10. (Make sure you get a shielded cable.) If not, you can easily take it to a computer repair shop and see if they have a similar monitor in stock. If so, it'd be a simple matter of swapping cords, and you're out the door saving yourself a couple hundred bucks.

Vertigo>It flickers with brownish-red. Sometimes it's just little flickers, sometimes the whole screen is tinted in that color for several seconds. Sometimes the flickering lasts a second, sometimes several minutes.

Not totally off yet obviously, but it's dying slowly.

BTW, I relisted the pony at a slightly lower price. I got a lot of visitors. Almost 500, and 5 watchers, but no bids. So I'll give it another go :)

Remember that Ultimatedisney.com contest? The one where you had to guess at least 10 out of 15 images from Disney movies, one of which being a trick image of the Lion King being shown in a Gargoyles ep? Apparently I won and just recieved Disney's "America's Heart and Soul" on DVD. Never heard of it, but I'm sure it's a nice film.

I have now figured out why people decide to take time off from work after being in a car accident... it's just too hard on the body to go back so soon.

Or maybe it's because it's just so bloody cold outside...

Either way, it really sucks to be going back to school after trying to recooperate during the weekend and yesterday.

Creativity Demons/ End of Angels in the Night: I have one. Last week someone said something about transitioning from Gargs '97 to Gargs 2198 and it got me thinking (usually a bad thing). But anyway:

Start with the last scene of "Angels in the Night", and then do the fuzzy-fade out-flashback effect to 2198. One of the characters was telling AitN as a story, and ends with "And that's how peace came about between Gargoyles and humans."
Then another character looks at the storyteller funny and says, "Come on. That's not how it happened. That's just a urban legend like aliens under Easter Island and animals living in the wild."

Greetings from the frozen shores of Lake Erie. I don't know what's up with the weathermen around here, but to me the phrase "high temperature of 14 degrees" sounds like an oxymoron.

Todd > And people say that my creativity demons are evil. You win for today, and with bonus points for putting Elisa in handcuffs. ;)

Shara > Might not be the greatest idea to be sharing info like that in a public forum. There's already enough theorists out there saying that the Emmy voting process is rigged or at the very least severely flawed.

Of course, everyone knows that the absolute BEST way to support the Gathering is to pre-register and come to the convention in August. I'm not sure off the top of my head when that next pre-registration deadline is, but I know there's still time left before at-the-door pricing kicks in.

Be warned, this is a very dark creativity demon.

AN ALTERNATE ENDING TO "ANGELS IN THE NIGHT".

Immediately after the sun rises and the gargoyles turn to stone, the crowd of passengers stops cheering, and Margot signals to the policemen who've apprehended Castaway and his followers. The police promptly release the Quarrymen and give them back their hammers. A few of the police seize Elisa and handcuff her to keep her from interfering, while the Quarrymen advance upon the stone gargoyles and smash them all, to the applause of the crowd. Margot turns to Castaway and comments on how the plot worked - "We duped those gargoyles into thinking that we accepted them, so they'd perch out here in public in the daytime like sitting ducks. Who'd have thought that those monsters were so gullible?"

Yes, a creativity demon that I certainly wouldn't want fulfilled - it'd make a very depressing way of ending the series, on a decidedly permanent note - but it popped into my head and I had to set it down.

Hi kjay, welcome back! The Gargoyles dvd came out December 7th. You can find it at most major retailers except the Disney Store. Or, you can surf through to Amazon via the Gathering of the Gargoyles website and by it from them. (plus we get a cut as a referal fee so you support the Gathering at the same time!)

She lets me vote on the emmys when she gets all that info because she does'nt care anymore. I could probally get the list. Need to ask her though.

Comics site update> Almost done. Got a few more images to imput and size and all that jazz and will be open. Hehe.
