Wow. The new Gargoyles dvd is really great. My favorite episodes are definitly the 'City of Stone' four parter, the 'Avalon' three-parter, and the excellent world tour episodes! I can't wait to see Gargoyles season 2 vol. 2! Also looking forward to the new Gargoyles comics quiete a bit!

Todd/Skiff's destruction>> The skiff is apparently destroyed in the first battle sequence, true, but the pan of the coastline right before Goliath, Angela and Bronx make their way to shore begins with a badly damaged but mostly there skiff, enough to be repaired.
Alex Garg - [fiatnox@gmail.com]

No problem :), I remember Greg said that was Nichols voicing her in Brother's Keeper in one of his posts, and if you listen hard you can tell. Hmm, I'm not sure about the nurse.
Purplegoldfish - [skydragonn@aol.com]

Purplefish: Oh, really? She sounds so much like Marina in Her Brother's Keeper. So I'm guessing the nurse from Deadly Force is voiced by Nichelle Nichols, too? You know, it makes sense. Thanks! :P
D. Taina
"Orday rewindum tapus!" - The Heroes Awaken Game

DTaina: Actually, the diamond Exchange lady was voiced by Nichelle Nichols, and in Cos she was voiced by Marina Sirtis. Probably a way to save money to get actors already in eps to voice minor characters.

I too noticed the younger Hudson model in "Vows"-only after I watched the DVD.

Heritage: The one thing that annoys me to no end in this ep is the "magical" red patch/es over gargoyle Raven's eye/s. Sometimes he has the red patch over his left eye, sometimes his right, and sometimes both...AAAgghhh! Make up your mind! It shifts throughout the whole episode, it's very distracting!
But recently I couldn't help wondering if this was intentional, sort of like the reflection "glitch" in "The Mirror", sine Raven is a child of Oberon...but if it was, it wasn't a very good idea.

Purplegoldfish - [skydragonn@aol.com]

Stephen Hawking has a motorized wheelchair. There are no "hoverchairs" in real life.

""We have so little to do and so much time. Wait a minute. Scratch that. Reverse it." - Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder)

Perhaps Grandmother had a part to play in summoning the skiff back to shore (or reassembling it).

On the topic of the skiff, Was it man-made (or Gargoyle-made), or was it constructed by one of Oberon's children?

And Chameleongirl, who are you calling a sheep shagger.... ;)

Mr. X

SPEN - Yes, I'd noticed Keith David's voice as the narrator for the Biblical quotes in "Walking the Bible" as well. It was certainly a lot of fun to hear him there.

I hadn't noticed the similarity of the woman in "City of Stone" to the Diamond Exchange lady in "Her Brother's Keeper", but I have thought for some time that the man who's talking to the Weird Sisters in their policewoman disguise about how he's lost a whole night bears a very strong resemblance to Billy and Susan's dad in "The Thrill of the Hunt", and have been wondering if they're supposed to be the same guy. (Given the "Gargoyles" policy on re-using its "bit characters", I think that it's very likely.)

I watched "Heritage" on the DVD yesterday. One thing that I noticed that I'd either missed before or forgotten about is that there's no explanation about how the gargoyles and Elisa got back to the skiff; it goes missing during their fight with the sea monster in the start (in fact, if you look closely, the skiff is apparently destroyed in the battle), and all four of them are simply washed up onto shore without it.

Todd Jensen
"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Leo: I forgot to mention this in my last post. They look the same, yes, but they are also voiced by none other than Marina Sirtis. Coincidence? I think not! :P

I saw the Beatles tonight. Man, what a great show!

They even sang "Imagine," which was the best song of the lot. That's brought tears to my eyes. I olove that song.

No, I only saw "Rain," the Beatles Experience, but they even sound Exactly like them!!!

If you like the beatles, you'd LOVE this show.

"One must do what one has.......I suppose"

I don't think someone being a parapalegic is really something to be "parodied." Also, I'm not aware that Renard was really a genius- he ran a company that made a lot of good things, but I don't know how many he did personally. Xanatos has a company at least as large, and he may be shrewd, but hardly a genius. And I don't think Hawking has a hoverchair. Also, he can't speak on his own and uses a voice box, while Renard does not have that problem. Yeah, I see a connection to Hawking, but no more than to Franklin Roosevelt, or any other prominent person in a wheelchair.
Jurgan - [jurgan6@yahoo.com]

Some random thoughts on Outfoxed, was Halcyon Renard supposed to be a parody of Stephen Hawkings-the reknowned genius who also has a hover-chair or am I just imagining the similarities between the two.

Can't wait for Season 2 part 2

Ack, that's supposed to be "modern" not "moder"!
Spen

This has absolutly nothing to do with the current disscussion, but I thought I might as well bring it up. I was watching "Walking the Bible" on PBS the other day, and the narrator was Keith David.

A couple of notes : In the moder day part of "Vows" at the end, Hudson has the 975 model instead of the modern one.
Is it just me, or is the woman who is interviewed by Travis Marshall in "City of Stone Part 3" the same woman from the diamond exchange in "Her Brothers' Keeper"?
Amazingly, the moon wasn't full during "Double Jeporday".

Spen

Sorry if I upset you, Matt. The truth of the matter is that I've gotten cautious around questions after one particular case, where an entire set of questions had to be deleted because of one "idea question" in the middle. That question was whether the Praying Gargoyle had other functions besides keeping the gargoyles safe from the plague that Demona was going to unleash in "Hunter's Moon". That was so subtle that it slipped right past me, but Greg felt that it was an idea masquerading as a question, or dangerously close to one, and so had to have it removed. After that, I've needed to be extra careful about deciding whether such-and-such a question is an idea or not.
Todd Jensen
"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Matt: Todd said "dangerously close" he din't say that it was.

And when you compare "Did demona attempt to assisanate (i e "interact") with Hitler?" and "Did the Nokkar interact with the Lost Race" they are similar "yes/no" questions. But the Nokkar question is just a bit more general as to skate by the cutoff (which is subjected to interpretation by Greg).

So, you do have to be careful wqith any question that would be answered with "yes", "no" , or an implied "I haven't though about that"

Leo

there ya go, Todd. just throw out all the interesting questions that are not really ideas anyway and keep all the FAQ, laundry lists, and dumb questions in the queue.

when you think about it, almost ANY question could be interpreted as a question masquerading as an idea. maybe we should just shut down Ask Greg forever, since asking anything would break the rules.

not meaning to be mean or disrespectful to you, Todd. i don't envy your job at all, but it annoys me when you let crappy questions through and throw out good questions that i doubt Greg would have any issues with. and i understand why dph got upset with you bringing up his question in particular in this room, i mean hes a regular poster afterall. dph's question is just following a natural thought process, we know Nokkar's race has been around a long time and the Lost Race was around a long time ago, so did they encounter each other? hes not theorizing on that encounter at all, and if/when Greg gets the question i think Greg can nip it in the bud if he wants to by saying "not saying" or whatever. i think this is a prime example of what Greg was talking about in the intro to Ask Greg. we know Demona has been alive the last thousand years or so, so its cool to ask what was she doing during WWII, but asking if she tried to assasinate Hitler IS an disguiesed idea. by your logic, you should throw out "what was Demona doing WWII?" because you say it puts the idea that Demona was doing something during WWII in Greg's mind, but its not, we know Demona WAS doing something, and we know Nokkar's race and the Lost Race were around at the same time too, Greg has told us this, so asking if they met is not an idea IMHO because it simply clarifies information we already know.
now if dph asked "did the Lost Race become extinct in a war with Nokkar's people?" THAT would be an idea, and i'd fully support you booting that one.

again Todd, nothing personal, just don't feel dph's question should be booted unneccesarily.

"Breath deep, seek peace." -James Gourney, Dinotopia

For that matter, once I'm in the business of inspecting questions again to see if they match the rules or not, I'm not even certain whether that question will be acceptable anyway; asking whether Nokkar's race had dealings with the Lost Race sounds dangerously close to an idea disguised as a question to me. I already set up enough of an "Ask Greg" storm over failing to recognize another "idea disguised as a question" from a few years back; I don't want to go through that again. So I'm going to be erring on the side of caution from now on in deciding which questions get through and which ones don't.
Todd Jensen
"Gargoyles" - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Matt - <http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/archives.php?lid=32>
From the answer that I received, I concluded that Nokkar's race came into being probably *before* the Last Member of the Lost Race died. That opened the door for me asking if Nokkar's Race had interactions with the Lost Race. Only other thing I could think to ask is if any members of the Lost Race are alive as of (insert date) and use lots of dates. That would annoying for him to answer and frankly, waste my time. I fail to see the harm in revealing when the last member of the lost race died unless that event 1)is sometime in future (ie. after the events of the Journy) and/or 2)that event caused something else to happen - something so big that it changed
the entire universe of the gargoyles forever. If it is a case of the former, it would be nice to know.

Anyways, Todd, I did ask a question about characterization.

dph_of_rules
Whatever happenned to simplicity?

i honestly have to say that whether Nokkar encountered the Lost Race is something i never considered, but is actually an interesting question. i'm glad you thought to ask it...
now, if someone asked "why did you take Gargoyles off the air?" or "why did you give Angela to Broadway?" THEN i would be upset...

hopefully with Ask Greg being opened for only a few weeks it'll limit those questions that are actually annoying and already been answered.

matt - [ewoks11@hotmail.com]

Todd - < already people are posting questions about such topics as whether Nokkar met any of the Lost Race> Why generalize? Just go out and say I asked those questions instead of saying people in general. I believe none of the questions I just asked will have any bearing whatsoever with the current planned upcoming comic.

Wow. Greg Weisman posted a funny link.

Todd: Re: 3D Goliath. LOL Yeah, it kind of makes you want to toss things into his mouth.

Leo - [<- Pimping Demona Taina's pan collection]

The queue's been open again for a few hours and already people are posting questions about such topics as whether Nokkar met any of the Lost Race - sigh. I wish that people would focus their questions more around, say, the motivations of the major characters than around the peripheral elements of the series' background. (Besides, now that Greg's coming out with the comic book, I doubt that he's going to be divulging information about the Lost Race at "Ask Greg". He probably regrets even mentioning its existence at all.)

About the DVD: how do people feel about that 3-D representation of Goliath in stone sleep at the beginning? I find it a bit on the freaky side - but then, converting characters from 2-D to 3-D animation feels just a tad unsettling to me.

Happy New Year!

Gorebash, Todd and I are briefly opening the submit function at ASK GREG. I plan on posting some ramblings soon on "The Gathering, Part One" and "The Gathering, Part Two" and "Vendettas". And I'd love to get your rambles on those episodes as well.

More than that, I'd like to get your response to the new DVD that came out last month.

I also don't mind getting a few legit new questions, but PLEASE... be reasonable. As of now, I'm still nearly two years behind in answering questions. Gore is planning a major retrofit of the site, but until then, it doesn't help to flood ASK GREG with questions that have already been answered or that could be answered much more rapidly in the comment room.

We'll be closing the submit function down at the end of January, 2006. (I don't want to get too much further behind.)

Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you about that DVD,

Greg

Speaking of video games, I got the game Gun for Christmas (pretty good, but I'd beaten it after three days- probably a better rental). In it, you meet a virtuous prostitute whom I immediately recognized as having the voice of the lovely Kath Soucie.

Heather (my girlfriend) and I have finished all the DVD's currently out. She's never seen the series in its entirety, but refuses to watch my old scratchy tapes, and frankly I don't blame her, so it'll be a while until we finish. At some point, I'm going to go through and write rambles on all the eps. which I'll eventually submit to Ask Greg. Heather is fascinated by Owen and was really hung up on the Magus since Awakening Pt. 2. She was convinced that the Magus and Katharine married and had children, passing the Grimorum down through the family until it reached great-great-etc-grandson Owen Burnett. So I knew she'd be very upset over what came up in Avalon, although she still liked those episodes. But she's still convinced that there's some connection between Owen and the Magus (I guess they kind of look alike, and they have the same voice actor, although when she pointed that out, I then began speculating on how Brooklyn was really the Magus's son turned into a gargoyle, and Bruno got his job with Xanatos because he was Owen's nephew, and the same for Vinnie while Owen was at Cyberbiotics, etc.). Also, she pointed out that Jackal kind of looks like the Magus, which I never noticed before. She's also sure the Vogel is Owen's brother. All good theories, and probably much similar ones were brought up back in 1995, but I think the reality is much more interesting, and certainly more creative.

Greg (& Todd): I'll dig through and find it and respond asap. My e-mail account on s8 got hammered with spam in December (10,000+) and the spam filter i'm using was set to be a little more agressive in what it picked out. Todd> thats pretty bad, but nothing beats the infamous "two Hudsons and a Bronx" scene from Kingdom...

and as for "Vows" that should not be on the DVD, or if it is, only on a blooper/alternate ending sorta place...

matt - [ewoks11@hotmail.com]
"Breath deep, seek peace." -James Gourney, Dinotopia

I thought that the old ending to "Vows" was flawed, in that it suggested that Goliath and Demona would get back together, something that we know is not supposed to happen.

I was watching "Avalon Part Three" on DVD today, and noticed a little animation error. Arthur has a sword at his belt, even though he's not supposed to recover Excalibur for another twelve episodes. (It might be an empty scabbard reserved for Excalibur, but I could see the sword hilt stuck in it a few times.) It's all the more embarrassing, since Greg mentioned that they specifically equipped Arthur with a mace rather than a sword during his fight with Macbeth so that the audience wouldn't think that it was Excalibur. It looks almost like a repeat of the notorious goofs where Hudson's shown in "pre-Wyvern Massacre" settings with his sword at his belt.

Todd: I probably missed you saying this before, but what'd you think of the old Vows ending?

Gorebash - [gorebash@s8.org]

Well, the DVD's been working fine for the past couple of days, so I suspect that it was only a temporary glitch. Thanks for all the advice.

I've gotten up to the Avalon three-parter by now, and hope to see "Avalon Part Three" some time today. Having noticed how much sharper and clearer the picture is on the DVD than on my old tapes, I'm really looking forward to seeing all those details of King Arthur's sleeping place in the Hollow Hill (one of my favorite setting designs in "Avalon").

I still get a big kick out of the Archmage time loop, including the way that the original Archmage keeps on driving his future self up the wall. Probably the biggest highlight of all is:

ENHANCED ARCHMAGE (to the Weird Sisters): Meet me again in 975 years' time.

ORIGINAL ARCHMAGE: 975 years???

The enhanced Archmage promptly glowers in silence at his original self.

Xanatos is coniving maybe, but hes also profit orientated. whether that profit is in money or personal goals, hes always after something.
my bet is that he is probably trying to sell the US government technologies on military contracts. he may also be pumping money into Genu-tech for cloning and stem cell research and applications thereof.

was playing the PS2 game Dragon Quest VIII when I came upon a battle with the main villain, Dhoulmagus. He's your typical Dark Wizard, just dressed as a jester. After I beat him, he changed into a gargoyle! Save for being mostly feathery/furry, he fits the gargoyle description perfectly.

Hey...it's a half step above Demona's measurements.

Todd> Here's some of my advice. Before playing a disc, it may be best to place a d-skin on it to protect it from scratches. If there happens to be scratches on the disc, place about two drops of Maxell scratch remover on the scratchs and wait for five minutes. Then take a cleaning cloth and buff out the disc (make sure to wipe from the middle of the disc, downward) Then spray Maxell cleaner, polish and sealer on the disc and repeat wipe again(middle, downward) Then again, you don't have to take my advice

DVDs went out to friends and family over christmas. Was playing WoW the other day and made a comment about all the books in a given room and how useless they were without pictures and who needs to read, etc.. and a friend says something like "Hey, after watching 'Lighthouse' you should know better". That a friend would make a Gargoyles reference (having watched the DVD) made my week.

Finally saw all of Firefly and then Serenity. After hearing Greg talk about the show at the con last year I decided I had to check it out. Great casting. I'll say this: thank god I watched the series before the movie and, me being me, wish I hadn't. Same exact feeling I had after watching the last episode (or 3, cause you saw it coming) of Cowboy Bebop.

Spen: Try clearing out cookies set for s8.org from your browser, if you can. My guess is you hit up the imageless CR and that set a cookie that isn't being unset properly. You've tried clicking on the "show images" link in the left menu, yes? Or when you say text-only are you literally only seeing text and no color or layout?

Todd: Dust, fingerprints, scratches, and condensation can be common causes for skips. Cleaning the surface with strokes perpendicular to the tracks (as if you were tracing over a line the length of the disc's diameter from the middle out) will usually fix things. ( You clean in that direction because scratches, even tiny ones that a dust rag or cloth can cause, can have a greater effect if done in the same direction the disc is read. ) Condensation can happen if you've got a cold DVD (it's been outside) and you put it into the DVD player without it first warming to room temp. It happens. One other thing that causes DVD skips is your DVD player overheats. This happens a lot with mine. One solution is to just power it off for a little bit. Another is to make sure you've got good air circulation around your player (no VCR or other unit sitting on top of the DVD player).

One person in the group gives a quote, and nobody can possibly identify it. Finally, after everyone's feeling frustrated and at wit's end, they demand that he just tell them where this quote comes from. The person replies, "It came from an anime series that got cancelled early enough in production that they only made one episode that never aired and threw the tape with the episode out, but I found the tape in their trash and discovered the quote from there. Hudson/Broadway> alright! gargoyle heredity, my favorite! i've actually put a lot of thought into the Hudson/Broadway relation and into what Hudson's mate looked like. i've even done several drawings based on what we know (the first one i drew was nearly 5 years ago, not long after i first came to this site!). heres what we know about this family:
-Broadway obviously inherited his build from his father, and perhaps his mother as well. likewise, he inherited his wing type from his father and perhaps his mother as well.
-Broadway has three horns running down the midline of his head, Hudson has identical horns, but has two pairs of them running down each side of his head. i think this means that Hudson's mate probably had some sort of horn running down the center of her head, perhaps even a crest like Ophelia. take a look at Ophelia's crest and horns and judge for yourself, thats only one possibility. anyway, the combo of Hudson's horn type and his mate's horn placement is probably what gave Broadway his horns. this blending of features happens often it seems. both Gabriel and Angela have horn structures that are blends of their parents horns, and Gabriel's wings could be seen as a blend of Othello and Desdemona's wings, or perhaps they are from a grandparent.
-features Broadway has that Hudson does not include coloring, lack of hair and ear type. its likely Hudson's mate had these features, but not absolute. Gabriel has several features that neither of his parents have, such as "chin horns" and a different end to his tail. however, coloring seems to be something that comes from one parent or another, not recessive or carried from a grandparent.

knowing all that, i think that most likely Broadway's mom had his coloring, his ear type, and some sort of horn running down the center of her head, but not neccesarily like Broadway's horns. furthermore, she probably did not have hair, which would make her interesting to see because she'd be our first hairless female gargoyle. other than that, we can only guess about her tail, wings and any other features she didn't pass to Broadway. anyone feel like drawing her given these parameters?

as for garg heredity, i look at it this way: for any given feature (wing type, ear type, coloring, whatever) a gargoyle when conceived is 25% likely to inherit from their mother, 25% likely to inherit from their father, 25% likely to inherit a combination of their parent's traits, and 25% likely to acquire a new mutation or have something from a grandparent. that theory more or less explains the features we see in the few gargoyles we've seen who we've also seen a parent(s). Greg W once said that gargs look like the same sex parent except with the opposite sex parents coloring. Angela sorta follows that rule, but Gabriel does not, he has his a more brownish-blue coloring (as opposed to Des's brown and Othello's blue) and he has his mother's hair color (assuming shes not being possessed by two of the Weird Sisters). Greg also said that some gargs end up looking just like their same sex parent (this explains the ubiquitous re-used gargoyle models, particularly the rusty-colored guy with the breastplate from Awakenings, City of Stone, and Avalon.)
i think my 25% theory explains the things we see a little better, but i'm open as always to comments, criticisms, and suggestions.

and if anyone wants to draw out Hudson's mate i'd LOVE to see it!

hmmm... secks isn't Swedish or German is it? *ponders*

this has probably been discussed numerous times. but when I was watching the Avalon series the other day. I remembered first time I saw Gabriel that I thought he was related ,not his son persay... to Coldstone/Othello. of course Greg later confirmed this at Ask Greg . I also knew of course Angela was Golliath's Daughter from the start, but was surprised to find out that Hudson and Broadway were father and son. we don't know what Hudson's mate looked like. but I don't really see a resemblance between H&B except. same wing shape and maybe body build . thoughts?

also, when Re-Awakening first aired I thought Coldstone was Brooklyn or Broadways father..:p just due to the coloring and and the horns .. oh well, that was a long time ago. *shrugs*

Thanks, Bishansky. I was hoping that that would be all that it was - just a little dust, and nothing more than that.

Todd. Probably a bit of dust on the disk. Or the occasional glitch in the player. Not big deal

What I'd like to know is what Demona would do to humans whom she discovered discussing her cup size. :)

On a more serious level, I'd like to pose this to anyone who knows more about DVD players and how they work than I do. I was going through the new "Gargoyles" DVD today, and watched the DVD of "Protection". During Act III, the picture started jumping badly. I wasn't certain if something had happened to the DVD or to the player. A little later on, I decided to watch "The Cage" on DVD (and later "The Price") and both times, the picture didn't jump. I don't know what might have gone on there (though I did gently dust the DVD on which all three episodes were on between "Protection" and "The Cage", and maybe that did some good).
