HELL YEAH!!!." Dragomir does a happy dance around the comment room, flashing his prize for all to see. "With this DVD in my clutches, and the power contained within, I could...Dare I say it? RULE THE WORLD! MAHAHAHA!"
Demona and Xanatos stand close by, watching the fledging villain laugh maniacally in silence. "Hmmm, do you think he's capable of pulling that off?," Xanatos questions his former partner in crime. "Let us hope not, what with all the new villains who are bound to appear in the comics, we'll be up to our eyeballs in new rivals enough as it is. Last thing we need on our hands is a deranged Gargoyle fan with a magically endowed set of DVDs," Demona replies, eyes narrowed into slits as she glares at Dragomir, lighting flashing around him and his all powerful DVD volume.

"Gabriel! What happened to your pants!," Angela cries out in surprise, blushing hotly. Gabriel growls and covers himself with his wings as he answers, "Some fiend named Dragomir stole them! Said he needed them to prove to his combanions that I wear pants! RAAAR, when I get my hands on him..."

Everyone> I watched the episode where Hudson has to keep Goliath safe from Demona until the sun heals him last night, you know, the one with flash backs about their hunt for the Archmage? It strikes me as odd that Hudson could outwit Demona like that, I mean, she's a thousand years old, you'de think that would she would have so much experience under her belt that Hudson wouldn't have been able to pull that little stunt before she killed him. I mean, isn't Demona technically older than Hudson, since she was awake throughout all of the centuries and actually grew old before the Weird Sister's restored her youth? Though I guess the Manhattan Clan is technically ancient as well despite the fact they weren't awake during all that time and did not age. I guess I'm over analysing, just strikes me as strange that Demona wouldn't have learned everything that Hudson was saying she had yet to understand (I'de say waiting for a one thousand year old spell to break before exacting her revenge is pretty patient, lol).

I also like MacBeth's outfits, his black leather jacket he wears in battle mostly though. Demona's Future Tense body armor is sweet as well.

Dragomir, I think you are assuming too much to say that everyone else has gotten over what happened. You were "attacked" for being someone you weren't because you were seriously obnoxious in a very similar way (something that hasn't changed).

Jalapena: Well, check the ASK GREG archives for the full story, but as best I can recall it all started with Keith "Goliath" David having heard this one singer who used the exclamation "Jalapena" as a substitute for "Halleluja." So Mr. David would come to GARGOYLES recording sessions and exclaim "Jalapena!" every once in a while. That was when "the bet" was made--Voice director Jamie Thompson (sp?) turned to Greg Weisman and bet that Greg would not be able to work "Jalapena" into a script. After LOSING that bet, Jamie then bet that Greg wouldn't be able to pull off any of the other characters saying that word, and...well, let's just say I don't think he would do too well in Las Vegas (heh). As for what it might mean, in-show, your guess is as good as mine. It's obviously a swear word (though I would have preferred something with a more Gaelic sound, personally).
The Clones: While I don't think it's what Greg W. had in mind, I did like your descriptions of the clones as "dark reflections" from a purely speculative point of view. Personally, I think (given what we know of the future) the clones will eventually (repeat: EVENTUALLY) become allies of the Manhattan clan (maybe friends in a few cases). I would like to see them develop full personalities of their own--become neither carbon copies or "dark mirrors." That would be the hardest to pull off, of course...but that also means it would probably be the most interesting.
Xanatos' plans for the clan: Remember, in the episode LEGION Xanatos collected a computer virus. That was the last we heard of it (so far). Why? Because he hadn't yet found a use for it. But he has it, just in case. That's a big part of the way Xanatos operates--he aquires anything that's unique and could prove useful. He may not have a use for it at that particular time, but you never know what might come up in the future. It was the same way with the gargoyles at first. C'mon, wouldn't YOU want a team of "super-powered" underlings following your commands? And when they didn't work out, he tried to come up with substitutes like robots, mutates and a certain clone (who may have made Xanatos re-think the whole "build your own gargoyle" thing).

DEMONA AND ANGELA> Again, I'm getting into this a little bit late, and others have already voiced most of my own thoughts concerning this, but...there are two things I feel I should add:
1) Demona and Angela actually spent a lot more time together than one might initially think. The events of THE RECKONING take place over the course of at least THREE MONTHS. And at least one night a week, every week, for those three months, Angela was guarding Demona's cell. That's at least twelve (12) all night conversations, and maybe even more. That's maybe not much time in the bigger scheme of things, but it's enough to learn a little about a person (even in spite of oneself).
2) One of Demona's problems is that she's not as cold and calculating as she likes to think she is. Demona is a very emotional individual and (no matter how much she might want to think otherwise) her actions are ruled by those emotions.
Part of the reason Demona allowed herself to be captured in THE RECKONING was to "turn" Angela. I'm sure Demona tried to tell herself it was because she was a "new" gargoyle and therefore the easiest to sway from Goliath, but in actuality she just wanted her daughter on her side. And, over the course of those 12 "visits," I think Demona may have started to genuinely like Angela, in spite of D.'s desire to be cold. I think that was real pain Demona felt when Angela said "I hate you." More importantly, it was pain that was NOT tinged by anger.
I'm don't believe that Demona will come back to "the side of the angels" during Angela's lifetime, but I do think that Angela WILL have some effect on Demona (mostly positive...I hope) even as only a memory.

ACTION FIGURE COMMERCIAL> Oh...my...gawd.
Oddly enough I was just thinking about the action figures and their commercials last week. I knew there were at least two, each with a different tagline, both cheesy (the second one was, "Night falls...adventure calls!"). I also remembered that the first one (the one linked) had straight narration, the other had rhyming verse ("Dark Demona's out to slay/those she loved but did betray" like that) and a chorus that would chant "We are Gargoyles" over and over again. Boy, they could have done SO much better.
As for the toys themselves, I only have one--Brooklyn, and you can tell from the bi-lingual box that he's from the French part of Canada (thanks again, Battle Beast!). I didn't buy any of the toys when they were out because...well, things like the umpteen versions of Goliath and the commercials kind of discouraged me. Nowadays, I kind of wish I had bought them back when they were cheap and plentiful (three copies of each--one to keep on card, one to play with, and one to hold onto for years, then sell for big bucks!).
I've often wondered, though, why Kenner decided to do the things it did--countless Goliath's, weird molds/repaints, and character versions that did not even appear in the show (fire/ice/waterstorm gargoyles). I mean, it's nice to attract casual shoppers, too, but keep the actual "built-in audience" pleased, too. And couldn't they have put character cards on the packaging (like TMNT, Transformers and G.I. Joe)? I know I would have loved that.
I think Greg W. posted a memo from Kenner in the archives detailing their concerns about an action figure line for GARGOYLES (among them seems to be a concern that the monsters are the good guys!).

Okay, I think I'm about as caught up as I'm going to get for right now, so it's back to RL until I have more to comment on. I don't know Dragomir. I don't think Demona would enjoy whaling all that much. She doesn't strike me as the seafaring type, and even if she were, I think she'd enjoy killing humans more than whales.

And your theory is interesting, but I'm gonna have to agree with Greg B. I think that Demona was just stung by her younger self saying "I do not wish to be you!" Demona doesn't take that sort of thing very well. Look at what happened when Goliath was honest with her in the last part of "Awakening," and said that if she hadn't conspired with the captain in the first place, the massacre never would have happened.

Todd: One of the things that I wonder is how much time passed between "Hunter's Moon" and "The Journey." Hudson's remark in the first act of "The Journey," about how the city was a tinderbox, suggests that it wasn't too long, perhaps a week at most. This does lend credence to the theory that they had the Quarrymen planned for a while. And if Castaway approached them, this suggests that they had an organization planned, but couldn't decide on who its poster child should be. And then Castaway showed up on their doorstep, so to speak, and solved their problem.

I'm sure Xanatos had full intent to use the clan for various acts various schemes. Keep in mind, the only gargoyle he had experience with prior to Goliath was Demona. So, he may not have been aware of Goliath's nobility and morality.

Xanatos is extremely smart. I'm sure his plans made sense, but became moot once it was clear he would not be able to control Goliath as well as he'd like.

But, Xanatos is hardly your typical cartoon villain. Who's to say he doesn't have any schemes in mind that he could manipulate the clan into?

As for Thailog. I think he is a bitmore vengeful, but his plans for his three fathers are less about revenge and more about pride. Thailog is out to prove his superiority to them. He's the bastard son with something to prove. It's not really about vengeance.

And as for Demona looking for acceptance from her younger self... ummmmm, no. I highly, highly doubt it. Demona is full of self loathing. Witness the "If I must beat this lesson into you" line. I'm sorry, but at this point, I don't think Demona is looking for acceptance from anybody, save probably Angela... though she'd much rather convert Angela.

She's not really interested in acceptance. Just her war against humanity. And with humanity dead, gargoyles ruling the world and her ruling the gargoyles... at least that's what she likes to tell herself anyway.

I believe Demona had an alterior motive to going back in time besides her main goal of convincing her younger self to use the Phoenix Gate to conquer the world. I think Demona was secretly hoping to find acceptance from her younger self. I suspect Demona believed that the only person capable of understanding why she became what she is and forgive her for her crimes was herself, which of course didn't turn out that way, which resulted in her getting pissed off enough to want to beat up herself. She was mainly interested in corrupting her younger self, but at the same time she hoped she would forgive her (and when that didn't work she decided to beat "herself" up as punishment for her crimes). Deep breath....sigh...complex lady that Demona...lots of problems. But thats why we love her. (:

Count me as another person who hopes to (eventually) see the comic explain why the Illuminati are funding the Quarrymen.

The reason why I'm so curious about that is that, based on what little we know about the Illuminati, they share one definite thing in common with Xanatos: they want to control rather than to destroy. So it seems, on the surface level, odd that they'd be providing financial assistance to Castaway in his efforts to slaughter the clan. On the other hand, Xanatos provided assistance to the Pack in its efforts to kill the gargoyles, as a subtle means of advancing his own agenda, so the Illuminati's backing is plausible.

What would really be interesting would be if it turned out that the Illuminati's real motives for supporting Castaway had nothing (or very little) to do with the gargoyles, a la how Xanatos's big scheme in "Leader of the Pack" of breaking the Pack out of prison (or having Coyote, pretending to be him, doing it) and sending them off to fight the gargoyles was really about getting Fox out of prison. What if the Quarrymen are one big misdirection tactic, with Castaway not suspecting a thing? (Though "Revelations" does indicate that the Illuminati were interested in the gargoyles long before the Canmores came to New York.)

One thing that we can be certain of is that the Illuminati must have been planning the Quarrymen for a very long time; even they couldn't have made all those uniforms and hammers in the period between "Hunter's Moon" and "The Journey". It sounds as if they must have had it waiting for just the right moment....

Greg B: I can't help but wonder what that epiphany might be. Demona had that revelation in the finale of "City of Stone," and chalked it up to being tricked by a spell. So her denial mojo is already working overtime.

Dragomir: There's proof in the mortal world that humans and gargoyles can coexist, as well. The Ishimuran clan has been doing it for centuries. In some ways, it sends the message better than the Avalon clan, since there are only three humans on the island, and they've only been living there for about 50-odd years, as time passes on Avalon. Demona probably doesn't know about the Japanese gargoyles, but if she did, she'd find a way to rationalize, most likely by saying that they've been corrupted by humans.

Growing up on Avalon with Tom, Catherine, and Magus has given Angela insight into the good side of humanity (but only time will tell if Demona will ever realize this). I just think it would be easier for Demona to learn from someone who she hasn't harmed and who hasn't harmed her. Disagreeing is human nature, lol

As for my theory about Demona and Macbeth. Well. It's just my theory, there isn't much in the canon that supports it. But Greg has said that Demona would have two more great loves. I have no clue on who the first one would be... most likely a new character we've never met.

But, I do think sometime during 2198 or after. After the defeat of the Space-Spawn, maybe. At some point Demona has her epiphany, well in the future. And I think Macbeth will end up being there for her.

Honestly, right now he is still suicidal, so this will obviously develop slowly and realisticly. I do think Macbeth is capable of one day forgiving her. He is an honorable man, it would take a lot though. A lot of time definetly.

But also, in the Gargoyles universe, characters who fall in love have this deep, intimate understanding of each other. They're soul mates. Xanatos and Fox are obvious. Elisa and Goliath. Broadway and Angela. I'm sure Brooklyn and Katana too.

Well, who can understand Demona better than Macbeth? They're both immortal, intimatly linked, and according to Greg Weisman on the audio commentary, Demona was a little in love with Macbeth when they were allied.

And when Demona is redeemed, someone who actually suffered because of her would need to be the one to forgive her. Angela is not qualified in my opinion, because Demona never actually made her suffer... as far as we've seen. Macbeth on the other hand had to walk away from his wife and son, and if Demona hadn't betrayed him, they probably would have beaten Canmore. Yeah, Gruoch and Luach would have died eventually, but the latter most likely not at Canmore's hands.

Also, the sheer irony of it would be irresistable. Having spent over a thousand years despising humans, Demona falls in love with one. And Macbeth is not a bad guy. He has a sense of honor, is noble, even though he's a little screwed up, but I think he's capable of it under the right conditions.

And Demona always, always has been the Gargoyles Universe version of the Shakespearan Lady Macbeth. It was very intentional on Greg's part.

This is just my theory, but I believe if this is what Greg has in mind, he can pull it off.

Oh, and in Shakespeare's time, "to die" meant to have an orgasm ;)

In fact, dinosaurs are still among us, as birds, the last living vestige of dinosaurs, and mammals were greatly set back by that extinction event. 3/4ths of egg-laying mammals died out, and a lot of placentals did too, but not as many, so it is theorized that placentals had a head start on dominating the post-Mesozoic world.
In any event, the K-T Event (which yeah, was probably an asteroid or comet) did clear the way for the dominance of birds and mammals (and gargates!).

I have a cool theory about what Thailog's actions might be if he does indeed become the master villain in the comics, bear with me a moment please and tell me what you think of it.

I believe that Thailog will become a mysterious figure in the comics, manipulating events behind the scenes without letting it be known that he is the cause of it all (like he usually does, but to a greater extent). I believe that Thailog will acquire a large fortune somehow and use it to become the financial backer of the Quarrymen! Providing them with weapons and money to fund their hate driven operation! Now why would Thailog aid a bunch of gargoyle haters? Simple, for his own benefit! First of all, John Castaway will not know Thailog's true identity until its too late for him to do anything about it, Thailog will never meet him in person and will do business with him coverty (over the phone, internet, hired thugs, etc).

Now for Thailog's motives, money for example. Thailog will amass a great fortune to feed his greed by playing on Castaway's hate for gargoyles, manipulating him into buying ever more expensive weapons and technology (the infamous Quarry hammers for exmple). Furthermore, by using the Quarrymen as his pawns, Thailog can exact his revenge on Goliath, Demona, and every other gargoyle in Manhattan for ruining his plans for the clones without letting his presence be known (I'm sure he's pissed that Demona took full control of Night Stone Unlimited as well).

Finally, once all of his enemies have been destroyed by Castaway and his goons, Thailog can disappear or even have the Quarrymen killed once their usefullness is over. I can picture Thailog sending Castaway a new piece of equipment straight to Quarrymen HQ and having it self-destruct in his face, taking out everyone and leaving no evidence behind that can be traced back to him. Clever as always. (:

I suspect the good guys, and maybe even Demona, will find out before Thailog's plan is complete, but I still think that it is a plan Thailog would follow through with to the best of his ability. By turning public opinon against the Manhattan Clan, and spreading fear of gargoyles through the streets, Thailog can bring all of Manhattan to his knees. I'm sure he wouldn't care about how humans think of gargoyle kind as long as he can keep himself out of the crossfire and make a profit while doing it. Not to mention finally ruin his fathers Goliath and Xanatos (I also think thailog would try to buy out Xanacorp and Night Stone anonymously using the fortune he acquires by conning the Quarrymen with whatever he has left over from his first fortune). Tell me what you think guys, am I nuts? Or close to the truth...MAHAHAHA!

I wonder why it didn't occur to Golaith to simply bring the young, still benevolent Demona back home with him and leave evil Demona behind? Oops, nevermind, just answered my own question. If he did that he would still eventually have to face bad Demona again since she is immortal (plus, bringing good Demona back with him wouldn't change what her other self was destined to do, he may even wind up with another evil Demona on his hands if something happened to set her off). Avatars: (Yes, I'm slow, it's been a bad week) As you see, I've changed my avatar. I've seen that most of you use a one character avatar that's not necessarily favorite character. I would really like to seem more of Delilah in the comic book. I think she could prove to be a very interesting character considering where she came from. I'de really like to see how Elisa reacts to her.

And I kind of relate to her in a way because I see her as a confused soul who doesn't really know what to make of herself (and is obviously not a very good fighter), is somewhat sheltered, but has potential. (And it was either her or Maggie, but I haven't seen anyone use Delilah yet.)

Toys: *Looks at Wingless's list of toys* DAMN. I Wish I kept mine in the boxes. The only one still in the box is Elisa, and that's cause I bought it off Ebay. But I have a bunch of them lying in my closet and destk, and ALL of them are missing at least one piece, lol.

My fave is the goliath with the hinged cloth wings. I also have the one that "roars" when you press a button (He looks more like Thailog), and the ridiculous fire Goliath, though it's still pretty cool.
I also have Hudson, two Bronxes(one's purple), ugly armor Xanatos, and Coldstone.
And apparently, I used to have two Goliath's which have disappeared. Cause I found some strange armor pieces in my old toy bin the other day that's supposed to fit over the figures. (ones' a bull and one's a griffin thing, does anyone remember these? I think the purple Bronx was one of these too-he came with a lion armor covering-Which I lost) Stupid kids lose everything ;)

Matt: What I meant was that the earliest mammals were very simple creatures, and couldn't really do much in the way of evolving, because dinosaurs were dominant. The mass extinction 65 million years ago removed that obstacle.

I love that concept of time being immutable and unchanging. It stops any of the usual questions that plague a time travel story, but leaves some with one unusual question; what about the first time? but there was no first time and I am fine with that.

I think one of Stephen Hawkings ideas fits nicely into the equation here. He doesn't like the ides of the grandfather paradox, so he came up with, what he calls, his Chronologoical Protection Conjecture.

It is a conjecture because it cannot be tested, so it cannot be a theory, but he says that if a person tried to go back in time and kill his grandfather, that the universe has a "mechanism" to prevent this from happening and prevent alternate time lines from occuring. Something would happen to stop the grandfather from being killed and he would die when he was suposed to. Maybe the grandson would realize at the last second, when it was too late, that an unmarked grave he had noticed as a child was in fact his.

I think that works in the GU, Demona goes back to change things, but the universe didn't let her.

Unlike Back to the Future and Star Trek, you cannot go back in time, change some stuff, then return to a different future. Everything has already happened, so you can't change it. Time makes perfect loops.
Example: In MIA, Una and Leo are pissed at Goliath because one night in 1940, Goliath shows up, takes off with Griff and never returns. So Goliath goes back to 1940 to see what happens. He meets the English gargs and takes off with Griff. In the course of the night he realizes that because Leo and Una told him in 1995 that Griff never returned home in 1940 he knows that Griff will not return home already. So, he figures Griff probably died that night. But he got smart and realized he could use the Gate to take Griff back to 1995, and that, of course, is what he did. So, Griff never returned home in 1940. Goliath didn't CHANGE the past, he PARTICIPATED in it.
There was never a timeline where Xanatos didn't send the coin to himself or Demona didn't give that speech to her younger self or Griff died in 1940. All these things have always happened.
If Goliath and Elisa and Angela had shown up in Xanadu on the World Tour, the Clan might have some records of Brooklyn having visited there a long time ago and leaving with Fu-Dog, even though Brooklyn hasn't even begun his Timedance yet. In the Gargoyles Universe, Brook was already there and gone. If Goliath had known to ask Kai about it, he may have discovered that Brook had already been in Ishimura, even though Brook himself wouldn't know it yet. Brook's Timedancing won't change history, it will fulfill history.

Yeah, I saw the ending to Vows in this morning's episode of gargoyles (I agree they are pretty much over, but they both harbor lingering feelings that neither will admit or own up to). I felt so sorry for past Demona (how the hell would you react to meeting a psychotic version of your future self? I'de freak). I'm still confused by how the Phoenix Gate operates though. It can take you anywhere in time you desire, but apparently you can't change any events unless it was destined by fate to work out that way, correct?

Goliath couldn't save Demona from her dark future because it wasn't meant to be and thus the timeline corrected itself somehow, right? But Xanatos was able to make himself rich in the future by having that ancinet coin mailed to himself a thousand years later, followed by a second letter explaining how he did it. I think that is how its supposed to work, tell me if I'm wrong though (time travel on gargoyles has always been tough for me). If my theory on the gate is correct though, couldn't Goliath have left Xanatos and Fox behind in the past without fear of them changing the timeline? If they aren't destined to make any changes, then leaving them there wouldn't do any harm to history no matter what they did (though it would have been out of character for Goliath to do so I suppose, him being the good guy and all).

Of course, Demona was on a quest for vengeance even before she suppressed her guilt over the Wyvern Massacre; she embarked upon it partly to punish the humans for snubbing the gargoyles (plus - I believe - misinterpreting the aftermath of the massacre that she saw in "Vows" as the result of treachery upon the part of the castle's human inhabitants; note that Demona-1995 says only that it was done by the humans, and doesn't specify that the humans in question were the Vikings).

And further on the point of Angela "redeeming" Demona.

At this point, the only person who can redeem Demona is Demona.

Ironically in all this, her quest for vengeance against humanity isn't really even about humans when you get to the heart of it. It's about her not owening up to her responsibility in the Wyvern Massacre. I love Demona, she is my favorite character, but to be blunt... Demona is a fuck up. She's fucked up badly. More than once, more than twice. A lot.

The truest statement about Demona is that she is her own worst enemy.

And for that matter, I honestly don't think Angela is even qualified to "forgive Demona for her sins". She hasn't suffered because of Demona's actions the way others have. That may change in the comic though, we'll see. But really, I doubt Goliath will live to see it. That leaves Macbeth... and I have my own theories on these two.

Dragomir: I meant the ending to "Vows." The one that, I mentioned a week or two ago, more clearly symbolizes the ending of Goliath and Demona's relationship than the episode ending on the DVD.

Are you referring to favorite visual moments from the show? A few of mine are the scene in "Temptation" where Demona closes the Grimorum after casting the spell (and after careful consideration, I've decided her waist is somewhere between 16 and 20 inches); the fight between Demona and Hudson in the cemetery in "Long Way to Morning" (her wings unfurling behind that angel statue is just gorgeous); the scene on the rooftops in "Eye of the Beholder," most notably the slow-motion shot of Goliath stopping Fox from tearing out Elisa's throat, and the shot of Fox reverting back to human form (magnificently edited audio track on the latter); the slow-motion sequence in "The Price," right after "Macbeth" destroys the Hudson statue; I like the altered look of just about everything in "Future Tense"; that shot at the beginning of "Hunter's Moon, Part Two" of Demona standing on the rooftop is one of my favorite shots of her in the whole series (the effects of the wind were just perfect).

And please don't call her Angie. ( ;

As far as I know, the episode ends with Demona and Thailog falling into the flames, and Angela crying over her mother's apparent demise, boy was she ever wrong, with Goliath trying to comfort her by explaining that she brought out a spark of good in Demona that hadn't been there for a long time. Talon agrees to take the clones under his wing, pun totally intended, and teach them how to think for themselves. If there exists an alternate ending to the Reckoning in which Demona and Thailog discuss some secret plan, revealing that they had faked the whole thing in order to plant spies amongst their enemies, I'm afraid to say I have not seen it.

Una's eggs> Assuming Leo and Una have produced an egg for each of their three breeding cycles (which is a pretty good assumption), they should have one child born in 1958 (Broadway/Angela/Lex's age), one child hatched in in 1978 (Bronx's age), and one egg due to hatch in 1998 (same time as Tachi). That will be their last child.

Like Greg said, I'm sure gargs can have sex anywhere they want to. As for them laying eggs, well, they are Gargates, and Gargates lay eggs. So do most of the vertebrates including most fish, most amphibians, most reptiles, most (if not all) dinosaurs, all birds, and some mammals. Frankly, it is mammals who are the oddity in the natural world. Egg-laying is the norm, mammals are freaks.

Samson is indeed descended from Broadway and Angela. He is either Artus or Gwen's biological grandson or Lance's son. This would make Samson Angela's great-grandson or grandson, which would make him Demona's great-great-grandson or just great-grandson. Since Delilah was made using Demona's DNA, he is also distantly related to Delilah's descendent also named Delilah.

And yes, Wolf is a Mutate, just as much as Talon or the others are.

I doubt that Thailog would go to such lengths to kill the clan. He had them right where he wanted them, he had no need to fake his own death and have the clones infiltrate the clan (which didn't work because they live with the mutates now). Thailog is a true mastermind with a talent for complictaed schemes, but not to the point at which it becomes WAY too complicated. When Thailog has an enemy trapped, he kills them, not set them up for unnecessary Trojan Horse scheme to do what he planned to do in the first place. I agree that Thailog's the man though, he's outsmarted every other major villain on the show except the long since dead Archmage.

I just finished watching Vows on Jetix this morning. Did any of you notice that when Demona kicks Goliath in the face, blood briefly splurts out? Uncensored action ladies and gents, gotta love it. (:

I think Demona set Angela free because Angie is the one person on earth Demona can't stand to have hate her. She can bare Goliath's resentment, as well as that of the whole clan, but cannot stand the thought of being hated by her one and only daughter (you saw how crestfallen she looked when Angie cried I hate you. Demona's not ready to turn good any time soon of course, but she may change her methods in time for Angela's sake. Don't give up on her yet Angie! We're all rooting for ya!

Is Samson a descendant of Angela and Broadway? (I only ask because I think there is a GFW fanfic in which he proposes to Demona, which would be WEIRD if they were related).

Does Wolf count as a Mutate since he's gentically altered? Or does the term Mutate only apply to genetically altered beings like Talon and Maggie? (jungle cat face, bat wings, lightning bolts, etc)

Demona and Angela: I've developed the view that Demona does love Angela, would make sacrifices for her, but the love is a very self-centered one. In the scenes where I've seen the two together and having a "moment", Demona is trying to sway Angela over to her views. She probably has a very possesive love of her daughter as well. I don't think Demona really sees Angela as an individual, and may be trying to do a mix of shielding her from the dangers of the world and making Angela like herself (sort of like parents who try and force their children to follow the career path themselves couldn't). This is why I'm glad Angela is pretty much an adult: while she wants a close relationship with her parents, she's very much her own person and makes her own choices. That must frustrate the hell out of Demona.

I remember that there was one theory (I forget who by; it was a long time ago) that Demona and Thailog's fight was actually staged so as to trick the clan into taking the Clones in for some later big "Trojan Horse" scheme of Thailog's.

The one difficulty that I have with that theory is that it does seem a rather roundabout way of getting rid of Goliath and his clan. To explain my point better, here's a hypothetical conversation between Thailog and some new (uncanonical) associate.

ASSOCIATE: So why are we going to stage this big breach between you and Demona that'll help the gargoyles get away just when we have them all?

THAILOG: Because this way Goliath and his clan will be deceived into allowing the Clones into their midst.

ASSOCIATE: And why do we want that to happen?

THAILOG: So that, at the right moment, the Clones will bring the gargoyles down from the inside, allowing me to win.

ASSOCIATE: So what you're saying is that we have the gargoyles prisoner and at our mercy, but allow them to escape so that we can trick them into adopting the Clones, who'll then betray them to us?

THAILOG: Exactly.

ASSOCIATE: But we already have the gargoyles prisoner and helpless. Why go to all this trouble to let them escape and capture them again when we could off them now?

(And, yes, I know that it's the Mutates who take the Clan in, but the conversation is a little simplified here.)

Siren: It's funny you should mention Demona's feelings about Goliath. One thing I always found intriguing was in the episode "Vows," when she takes her younger self to 994, and is telling her about the Phoenix Gate. She starts to tell herself not to share it with Goliath, and then pauses and simply says, "do not share it!" Something about the way Marina Sirtis read that line always made me think that it was tinged with regret. She couldn't bring herself to say not to share it with Goliath because it was too painful for her to be reminded of what she once had. But I think too much has changed and they both know it.

Greg B: As I said last week, there is something that Demona loves more than Angela and that's her revenge. It's all she's had to sustain her for 1,000 years. I think it was love for her daughter that led her to push that button, but she didn't try to save Angela herself. She told Goliath to, and once she had made him capable of doing so, she goes and puts Thailog through the wall (and she didn't care whether or not he shot the rest of the clan, she just wanted to break him in half). Later on, she repeats what she'd said to Goliath earlier ("I told YOU to save our daughter!") because her primary objective was making Thailog pay. Of course, that's all in a smaller context. Revenge against an ex-lover/business partner and revenge against an entire race are two different things. But it illustrates where her priorities lie. Which ties back into what you said about selfishness. I think there is genuine love, otherwise she would not have acted at all. But she left the heroics to someone else, because she had something else on her mind that was more important to her.

As far as the incident in St. Damien's is concerned, Demona definitely has a history of throwing shit to cover her escape. And so far, the gargoyles have never failed to catch whatever it was she was throwing. I think she figured with their track record, the odds were good. ( ;

I'm starting to think Thailog might be the most intelligent character on the show. Not only has he played Xanatos (who is himself a master at manipulating others), but he also managed to throw the wool over Demona's eyes.

Hi everyone. I like this new topic, right up my ally, lol. I agree that Demona hates Delilah not just for possessing her DNA, but for having Elisa's DNA mixed in as well (That DEFINATELTY got her P.OED. Then again, i think most women would be pissed off if their boyfriends created submissive clones of themselves). I think Demona still carries a torch for Goliath, but its obviously a small one seeing as that she chose her own vendetta against mankind over patching things up with him (She probably thought of Thailog as her ideal "Golaith" before he betrayed her).

I think Angela is the one person in the world Demona cares for more than her revenge or herself. If she didn't love Demona more than her own vengeance, why bother collecting the stone gargoyle to protect her from the effects of the virus? Demona only threw the canister because she knew Goliath would catch it (but of course she didn't intend it as a good will gesture of course, she was hoping it would distract him long enough for her to escape). Demona cares nothing for the other gargs, but Angela is the daughter she never knew, and in her own twisted way, she was hoping to protect her from suffering at the hands of humanity (probably thinks of Angie as a naive girl who has yet to feel humanity's hate, and doesn't know any better because she grew up on Avalon). Demona would have attacked Thailog if he had tried to shoot Angie a second time, but I think she was still hoping to get Thailog to back off without a fight (that is until Thailog introduced her to a certain female clone...)

I doubt Demona will immediately turn over a new leaf at Angie's suggestion, but if given time for their relationship to grow, Angela may eventually get Demona to give up her age old quest for personal revenge (though I suspect that even then she'd have a bitter place in her heart for humanity, just not enough to seek their destruction). Demona's loneliness may be the key to her redemption.

I hope Demona redeems herself before the 2183 spinoff, but even if she doesn't, i like the idea of her teaming up with samson and company for the common good (lots of friction and tension in the ranks, lol). Isn't samson a descendant of Angela and Broadway? Thus making Demona his great, great, grandma or something?

4 so, just to be clear, when Goliath, Elisa and Bronx arrive on Avalon, not only should there be Boudicca, and the other two beasts, but there should also be the first now mature pup of the beast pair and their second egg, waiting to hatch in 2038. is that correct?

i know the math is kinda crazy, but the way i figured all this out was by saying 10 years on Avalon is 240 years in the real world and just adding from there so:

1078 real world- eggs hatch
+240 (10 years on Avalon)
1318 real world- gargoyle beasts mate and lay egg
+240 (10 years on Avalon)
1558 real world- egg hatches
+240 (10 years on Avalon)
1798 real world- beasts mate again
+240 (10 years on Avalon)
2038 real world- second egg hatches

is all this right? its entirely possible, despite my checking, that i could've goofed up somewhere, so please correct me if i'm wrong on anything.

Ugh. God, you're really going to make me do the math, aren't you? Let's start by saying that I'm not confirming that any of this happened. I'm just striving to address your calculations.

1. The natural gargoyle cycle would dictate that an egg would not be layed until 1328. Eggs are layed on even decades. They hatch on odd decades.

2. An egg layed on Avalon in 1328 would hatch in 1578.

3. Moving forward, the next egg would be lain in in 1828.

4. That egg would be waiting to hatch in 2078. Nevertheless, by your calculations, when Goliath and Elisa first arrived on Avalon, there should indeed be a pup that hatched in 1578 and an egg that was laid in 1828.

So, I was right originally when I said that there is a grown Beast that was the child of the Beast pair, AND there is an egg waiting to hatch. I forgot about the time inconsistencies though, so, as Greg said, that egg will not hatch until 2078.

A whole bunch of Oberon's Children

The funny thing is, Ophelia and the other female gargoyles on Avalon will lay their eggs in 2008, just like Angela, Turquesa, Obsidiana, and (possibly) Sora, Katana and Delilah, but unlike them, those eggs won't hatch in 2018, they will hatch in 2258! This means that the Avalon Clan won't be able o stock up other Clans for a long time, but since in the years those eggs take to hatch the Avalon females will go into heat several times, they may end up laying their second batch of eggs before the first batch hatches! They are gonna need a big rookery, cuz its possible, even likely, that there will be several generations of eggs waiting to hatch at different times. Another thing to consider with the Avalon time difference is that when the Space Spawn attack in 2198, everyone on Avalon will probably still be alive since only 8 years or so have passed there! In other words, even Katharine and Tom are likely to still be alive in 2198!

I know that she'll still hate us silly humans, but I'm not sure she'll still be out to get us. I would say that demona does love angela. Its like the mothers that give away there children and later wonder what would have been. In this case demona wants to get closer to angela but doesnt know how to aproch her to do it because of the tension between her and goliath.
Or like a child of a divorce relationship. They dont know which parent to be closer with and Theres always tension between the mom and dad.

I pretty much agree with you Greg B. Demona cares about herself first and then Angela. She wants Angela to believe ever word she says. If Angela did, maybe Demona could care for her more, if she could find a gargoyle ally in her own daughter.

Another line that strikes me is to Goliath, "Save OUR daughter!"...I was surprised she referred to Angela as "our daughter" rather then "my daughter", being Demona's selfness. It kinda brings back the idea that Demona still does carry a torch for Goliath, if only a little bit. Dealing in child custody issues, I know all too well when a couple breaks up, the words "our" and "we" are out the door. Its "mine" and "my".

Demona does love her daughter, but is so blinded by her experiences and problems she created, and her denial, she doesn't see that far ahead of her own nose.

Here's an idea for a debate topic.

Yes, another Demona topic. But a little different, I guess.

Just, how much does Demona love Angela? Does she genuinly love Angela?

I was debating this with Revel on the phone last night, and believe it or not, he had the more cynical view on it. But it got me thinking, he made some good points.

Personally, I think that Demona does indeed love Angela. I just think Demona cares more about herself (as well as hates herself, but that's another topic).

I cited an interesting bit of wording from Demona's Hunter's Moon Floppy disk diary... "The Praying Gargoyle will protect me, my daughter, and my kind from the plague." Maybe I'm overanalyzing this line, but she listed herself first before she listed her daughter and even her kind. Hell, saying "My daughter, my kind, and I" would have worked.

And, well, she was ready to let Thailog shoot Angela. Yeah, she tried to stop it, but she didn't actually go berserk until Thailog brought out Delilah. Delilah's existence seemed to piss Demona off even more than any threat to her daughter.

Revel said that he thinks Demona loves Angela like she'd love a treasured a possession. She doesn't really get the whole "mother" thing yet. She still barely knows Angela. I'm not sure I agree with him, but it's an interesting POV.

And, very telling is the end of "Hunter's Moon". When she tossed that vial, risking Angela's life along with the rest of the planet's so she could escape. You couldsay she gave Goliath an opening to catch it, but Greg said she was being very nihilistic. If the vial broke, than so be it.

My personal opinion. I'm not quite as cynical as Revel is. I do think Demona genuinly cares about Angela. But Demona is also a genocidal sociopath. I don't think she'd die (and I mean, really die) for Angela at this point.

We'll see how their relationship develops in the comic. All we know is Demona is still scheming against humanity in 2198

I remember the gargoyle that Matt quoted from. Was it me or did that gargoyle have a Welsh accent? Being Welsh I enjoyed seeing a character from Wales (I think) in the show. I would definitely have liked to have heard more from that gargoyle to decide.

Another good figure to work with as a custom gargoyle...Nightcrawler figures. He already has the feet and tail. Also check the cheap wanna-be figures at places like KBee and Big Lots. They often have cheezy toys, but taken apart and Frankenstien them together with other figures, paint them...they can look pretty badass

Oh yeah, and I forgot one of my favorite builds, Demona's 2nd in her CoS Clan, the red guy with the breastplate. I made the brest plate out of sculty and used various Goliath, Lexington and more sculpty pieces to make him. Hes cool!

Gargoyles Toys> I also had the black-haired Demona. Shes kinda weird looking, and mine doesn't stand up too well. I always wondered if they were getting Angela and Demona mixed up or something? Who knows? I also have the large Hudson, now he IS cool. He doesn't have a sword, but he looks great. I have him perched atop my wardrobe.

As for the action figures, I have tons. Almost all of the ones that were made. I agree that Bronx looked the most authentic. I ended up buying many extra figures on eBay for cheap and started building custom gargoyles. It's amazing how diverse a clan you can build when you combine parts from the various characters and repaint them. I ended up building about 10 members of the Avalon Clan, including Boudicca, Ophelia, Angela and Gabriel. (Angela is the easiest custom gargoyles toy ever, just sculpty some longer hair and repaint. I also filed off Demona's armor and added another shoulder strap for Angela). I also built some random gargoyles from other Clans. I LOVE my Zafiro figure, the snake body and feathered wings look great. I made an English gargoyle that is kinda a bull w/ wings. Not something we saw, but i like him. I also made the red gargoyle beast from Ishimura. I think my Coldstone and Thailog figures are half finished...

I remember trying to make sculpty gargoyle eggs, but it was harder than I thought it would be. Whenever I tried to harden the eggs in the oven they would start to flatten out like cookies, lol.

Sorry to post again so soon, but I was running a Google search on action figures while eating breakfast, and came across something interesting. Maybe people already knew about this, but click the link in my name and see if that doesn't look familiar.

Oh, and I did find one site where someone was cataloguing his collection. It's amusing. He said he lost interest in the show during the World Tour, which is unfortunate, because he probably didn't get to see the second season's very strong finish. But anyway, a few of the figure details confused me. Such as Strike Hammer Macbeth. Why would he have a "stone blaster" weapon when he would never attack a sleeping gargoyle? Maybe it was a gun that used stones as ammunition. Or maybe he wanted to help fix highways.

Broadway is the nice guy of the clan, but Hollywood would cold and distant. Wow. I remember that commercial. My sound card is still busted, but I got the basic idea of it. In fact, that was probably a mixed blessing. I do remember the dialog in the commercial with the Demona action figure making me cringe the first time I saw the commercial.

Does anyone know of any sites where they've got pictures of the action figures? I know that toy companies usually don't pay any attention to detail, but black hair on Demona?

hi Chameleongirl, I'm an Australian too. I remember that the Kenner figures were available here in most major toy stores, in Melbourne, some time after they came out in the US. I don't think they ever replenished thier stocks when they were depleted, but I remember that there was one or two of the least popular figures always floating around, I haven't checked for a while though.

I had to go through ebay to get my Applause small pvc figure set. I also bought the big Demona and big Goliath. And I have an animation cel of Goliath gliding through the air. Its from TGC, but you cannot tell by looking at it.

The Gargoyles toys were never really available here in Australia - at least, I never saw any.
The sister of a friend of mine got a whole heap, but that was while she was in England as a nanny.

Last year I managed to snag Xanatos in armour and Demona. I also found a slightly mauled Lexington at a flea market in Melbourne (he's missing his tail!).
I agree that Lex is the most on-model - except for the fact that his arms are seperate to his wings.

I have much too much gargs stuff. Got all the figures, including the large & small Applause figures(thats the PVC ones) - there were 9 of the little ones and 6 of the big ones-that's the set that had the black Demona hair one. I just bought a set of Garg pogs of a friend of mine ina pog binder(i didn't know they had pog binders-oy) and one of the 2 Puz 3D garg sets-really want the other one). The Kenner figures I have still in the boxes hanging on my wall. Got the Vehicles, The Ultimate Goliath(15 inches tall-signed by Keith David:-), the binders, the pencils, the backpacks, the cards, stickers, glases, placemats, doormat, castle, games, puzzles, keyrings, danglers, videos, toothbrush set, bronx alarm clock(looove that), Goliath Bank, Comics, Coloring Books, Other Books, Mugs, Kite, Towels, Bed roll, Thermos & lunchbag, Only thing I don't have are original cels. but Gee, Still for someone who just turned 40 a week or so ago, I gotsta be insane.

I have most of the "normal" looking ones. I never did get all those fire/ice ones...it was like WTF? They never were fire/ice, etc.

Anyways, out of all of them

Bronx was the MOST true to his design. Lexingtom came second. Demona third, if it wasn't for the bit of armor she had. Elisa in her jumpsuit was so bad. And no-neck Brooklyn...don't get me started. Hudson wasn't too bad. Ditto on Broadway. I have the big winged Goliath, with the hinges on his wings and button on his back so his wings open, besides the armor on him, he looks pretty close.

I wonder how they might have looked if another company made them. Whoever does the Batman ones does a good job. It would have been nice if Kenner went more for great designs that are true to the animated form then just how much s*** they can put on them.

BTW, Bronx is always on my desk :) I love his little glider backpack long ago. The best Gargoyles toys though were the little PVC ones they sold as a big set at the Disney Store. Xanatos's hair was a little off, but the others were all great. Anyone else have the giant PVC of Demona with black hair? I got her.

Oh, man. That commercial is one of those memories where you have to see it and it all comes flooding back. There were pretty decent toys out at the time. I found and claimed the two Gargoyles toys in the office storage area: a Steel Clan robot and a huge Goliath. I remember seeing a knockoff giant gargoyle at the Kay-Bee where I usually got them. And I love how the cool weapons, like the bike and helicopter, never lasted more than one episode each.

Heh, that toy commercial (and the toys themselves) got so many things wrong, not that it's any surprise since that's pretty common in screen-to-action-figure adaptations. Goliath's eyes are red, Xanatos' armor is silver and just plain wrong design-wise...they refer to Xanatos as "evil" three times. The dialogue was wonderfully cheesy.

Not like I could get a great look at them in the commercial, but Lex's toy seemed to have the best likeness (despite being too big).

The rest of the Clones though are nearly a blank slate. Who knows which direction their personalities could take? I see no reason why Hollywood would become a techno-guy, and I see no reason why he wouldn't. We simply don't know enough to guess how they would develop. But they are not neccesarily just the Manhattan Clan through the Looking Glass, that cartoon clone cliche is below the level of Gargoyles, I think.
And for the record, Thailog DID NOT program them to have aggressive tendencies, he explicitly states that all they need to know and all he programmed them with was "Obey Thailog." If Thailog orders them to attack, they attack, if Thailog orders them to have Tea with the First Lady, they'll do that too. They are not inherently aggressive.

I'd suggest trying to find the quote where he says that there is some pressure to find a mate to be clear on exactly what he said. In any case, I think the pressure to find a mate might be equally, if not more so, an internal thing. I doubt the older generations are actively telling the younger gargs to pair up, and besides, the Manhattan Clan is severely lacking in eligible female gargoyles, so I doubt anyone is gonna be upset if Lex can't find one. First of all, just because there is a change in one cell type or tissue doesn't mean all the cells in the body have to undergo said change, even though all the cells in the body are genetically identical. So, the skin of a gargoyle could very well have turned to stone while the hair and internal organs did not before the Spell was cast. Before the Spell, I think that the skin was LIVING tissue UNTIL dawn. Once it solidified, it was dead skin and was shed the following dusk. I don't think the dead skin turned to stone. Therefore, I don't think dead hair would have turned to stone either. I think that in those pre-Spell days, living gargoyle skin was the only tissue that hardened during the day. At dusk it would be cast off as dead skin, much like we cast off our millions of dead skin cells each day. Same thing, except gargs do it all at once.

Oh, and the egg due to hatch in 1998 on Avalon is not Bronx and Boudicca's. It belongs to the other male and female Beasts. Boudicca was old enough to lay an egg when they did, but didn't because she did not have a mate yet. And since even garg-beasts are monogamous, the single male beast did not inseminate both the females. And just to throw it in, one of the other beasts besides Boudicca is VERY likely to be a biological sibling of Bronx. I've been crunching some serious gargoyle population numbers lately and that is one of my conclusions.

I guess that depends on how well Talon, Maggie, and Claw raise them. If they teach them enough to HAVE their own wills, then I don't think it will kick in. Especially if they teach them to see Thailog for what he really is, which may also emotionally scar them since they will find out they were created only to serve him. There may be some reprocussions to it for them. And some may deal with it differently then others.

Matt: What I was challenging was the idea that before the Humility Spell, only a gargoyle's outer layer of skin turned to "stone." It just seems to me that since turning into "stone" is a biological process, it's something that would affect all organic tissue. There are different types of cells in the body, but the DNA in their nuclei is the same regardless of the cell. I don't know if that's any clearer, I'm just trying to explain why I think that before the Humility Spell, gargoyles just turned into solid "stone." I don't know about the hair, but if the outer layer of skin turns to "stone," and that's dead cells, I think it would stand to reason that hair would follow suit. And I feel like a noob for asking this, but is the egg that's on Avalon in 1997 Bronx and Boudicca's?

Dragomir: "The Reckoning" is one of my favorite episodes. I especially love that shot at the end of the second act. It's like looking at a negative photographic image of Goliath's clan.

Anyway, I don't think Demona wants anything to do with the clones. They'd probably remind her of Thailog. One thing that I'm wondering might come up in the comic is that at the end of "The Reckoning," the clones all think that Thailog is dead. Therefore, they could no longer fulfill their primary directive, and so there was a moment where they didn't know what to do, until Talon offered to take them in. So, I'm wondering, if they discover that Thailog is still alive, will that directive kick back on in their minds?

I don't particularly care for this whole Character Vs Character lists. Mostly because Gargoyles was more Character based than Action based. It's what made it so great and so different.

I personally would love to see Dark Ages come to be, learn how Demona, Iago, Goliath, and all the rest grew up, but don't wish to give my hopes up until the first comic proves popular enough to last. I hate comics that start up only to be cancelled three issues later, but I'm sure that won't happen with gargs. Just not so certain if Greg will get the chance to do all his spinoffs, hope he does. matt: you made an interesting statement about there being pressure on gargoyles to mate. This naturally made me think of Lex and his situation. Does anyone think that the other gargs of his clan might put pressure on Lex to mate? I know what Greg W. has said about Lex and the fact that he isn't fully aware of the fact of his sexuality himself, but I wonder if other gargs putting pressure on him might be a factor in him coming to a better understanding about himself. It makes me wonder if he (or other gargs in a similar situation) might even take a mate just because of the importance producing offspring is.

Of course...judging by Greg W.'s many responses to Lex's sexuality and whether or not it would be expressed in the comic books...I'm sure this is very hypothetical, but still, I think it would make such an interesting story.

Does anyone know how old Fu-Dog is when the Timedance crew arrives back in New York? I can't find it anywhere in the archives and I'm thinking Greg never mentioned it.
The reason I ask is because I've made a "timeline" showing which generation every gargoyle named in the show and in Ask Greg belongs to as of 1998. The only gargoyle I don't have an age for is Fu-Dog.
It's pretty neat, for me anyway, to look at when certain gargs are certain ages in relation to each other. For instance, it wasn't til I put this thing together that I realized Nashville could be a ROOKERY father to both Gwen and Lance. Another observation is that Brodway, Angela and Lex will be 200 years old when Samson is hatched, so its debateable whether they'll live to see this happen. The oldest gargoyle on my list is, not surprisingly, Hudson, but we know at least one gargoyle from each generation for the next 180 years! If anyone has any questions about this, feel free to ask. I like talking about it, LOL.

Heres a topic for ya, one I hope will interest all of you. The clone clan is bound to resurface in the comics, and assuming they don't turn good due to Talon's teachings, what sort of personalities will they develop now that they have grown smarter? Thailog is the exact opposite of Goliath, he's greedy and self-serving instead of noble and loyal. Here is a short list of what I think the clones will be like if they develop personalities of their own, but remain true to their creator's malevolent programming, or hook up with Demona. These personalities are based under the assumption that the educated clones will not be able to accept being mere copies of the Mahattan clan and will seek to replace them, or if they simply rejoin either Thailog or Demona (maybe even strike out on their own?)

Malibu= Brooklyn is rebellious and outspoken, but gets along well with the rest of the clan and is a good leader. I believe that Malibu would be servile to Thailog, the perfect yes man to do his bidding. Malibu would be domineering toward the other clones and act out Thailog's orders without question to win his favor. Scenario, "Malibu, prepare the others for battle, Thailog proclaims. "At once Lord Thailog," answers Mal submissively before screaming, "You heard the master you wretched worms! Get to work!

Brentwood= Lex is shy, trusting, and a natural computer wiz. Brentwood would be a battle crazed lunatic with an outspoken personality and a lack of interest in technology unless it involves learning how to fire a laser gun. He'd be less naive and more paranoid than Lex, but lets his fists do the talking despite his small size. Brain Vs. Brawn.

Hollywood= Broadway is poetic and good hearted, an easy going guy with little tech experience but good with his fists. Hollywood would be the techno wiz of the clones but would lack Broadway's emotional ties with his brothers and would be distant and cold.

Burbank= Oh, this one was tough. Since Hudson is wise, patient, and sagely, I guess Burbank would be an impatient, quick tempered barbarian (not much different from back when he was first programmed).

Delilah= now of course, if Demona reclaimed the clones, she would waste no time in blowing Delilah's head off. But assuming that Thailog beat Demona to them,and the clones were still loyal to him alone despite their enhanced intelligence, Delilah would once again be his concubine. She was smarter than the others to begin with, and programmed to serve Thailog completely, so she may not change at all. However, if Talon's lessons rub off even a little, I suspect she may become a threat to Thailog and try to overthrow him, using her feminine wiles to throw him off track (doubt it though, Thailog's too tricky for that).

Anyway, feel free to reply to my ideas for the clone's new personalities. Remember, this is all assuming that they do become smarter but retain their aggressive tendencies and programmed loyalty to Thailog (or simply decide there isn't enough room for two gargoyle clans in Manhattan).

Assuming that the two "bachelors", (I'm going under the assumption that they're not gay for topics' sake) left Avalon for whatever reason, then there would be no problems with anyone being left out in mating with a female, and possibly mating. Maybe some of the Avalon Eggs would eventually grow up to explore the world, though whether they end up in Manhattan or elsewhere is beside the point.

A very, and I mean VERY slow week. We had more posts on Sunday of this week than we did in the entire week in 2003.
I really hesitate to say that ANY topics were discussed, but I'll list those things that seemed to get the most posts (and by "most posts" I mean 2 or 3).
We briefly discussed what Walt Disney himself would think of "Gargoyles" at the beginning of the week, and a few posts later we it was Tuesday and we discussed why Macbeth was after Merlin's Scrolls and Excalibur and using correct phrasing when asking greg questions. Todd corrected several people's spelling throughout the week, and deaths of pet ferrets was mentioned and the condolences for them were given. Thrilling week...

We had several instances of spam posters in the Room and so much of the talk focused on spam online. This topic led to discussions on what to do with junkmail and telemarketing calls. Many funny ideas were mentioned on dealing with these annoyances. It was also humourous when we discussed eating gargoyles, though, admitedly, a bit creepy as well. Wingless suggested that Garg-omelots might be tasty, and they could "feed 20"!

I should've mentioned that I knew Greg W had said gargs imprinted on one another and mated for life, I just wasn't sure if that was more a matter of policy (natural tendency) or popularity (the social norm). Was curious if there were rare exceptions.

Was browsing the Ask Greg archives a bit and just read this response from December, thought it was interesting...

"The show may not be returning to the air anytime soon, but with the new comic book series coming out, I am less and less inclined to give away ANYTHING. As it is, I know I've already given away WAY too much. Certain things that would, I believe, have been amazing surprises, are now only going to be interesting to the hardcore fan from the standpoint of execution. "Did he pull it off or not?"

The thought has crossed my mind to change things so that I can surprise you all. But I made a conscious decision not to change things for that reason. Some things may change, as nothing but the canon 65 are etched in stone. So if I come up with a better idea, I may go with that better idea. But otherwise... "

It's interesting that a few or maybe even many future-continuity details some fans are taking Greg at his word for might be altered with the comic.

Greg has also stated that due to the limited number of gargoyles left in the world, there is some pressure to pair up and mate. I'm sure there are many gargoyles that don't produce children (either because of sexual orientation or just not finding a mate or not having an available mate) but, again, generally speaking it seems gargoyles are inclined to find a mate and have their three children for the good of the species if for nothing else.

As for the Avalon Clan, I would think that aside from any of the females being lesbians, all the females will find mates among the boys. As for the remaining boys, I imagine they will either stay single or opt to go out into the world as Angela did to find mates.

Greg did say something in the G:2198 Prize about in the period between 1996 and 2198 the more populous Clans transferring members over to the Clan that were struggling. I don't know the exact quote since I don't have it with me, but I imagine the Avalon Clan may end up becoming something of a "lifeboat Clan" because Females there can live to go through many more 20 year cycles, it seems likely they could have more than 3 eggs each. Their population is geared to swell in the next hundred years and many of those gargoyles will certainly leave Avalon to boost the numbers of the smaller Clans, like Manhattan and Labyrinth. I would guess that it is also members of the Avalon Clan who will found the New Wyvern Clan.

Gargoyles don't practice polygamy. They mate for life, they "imprint" on each other. Greg has said this.

17 males on Avalon, 15 females. The term, "life is unfair" comes to mind.

Maybe the two remaining Avalon gargoyles are gay. Maybe not. Maybe they'll find mates elseware. Maybe not. That's life.

So as Matt figured, once Angela has left the ratio or female to male gargoyles on Avalon looks like this:

15 Female Gargoyles
17 Male Gargoyles

There's either gonna be some serious competition among the last three of the male gargoyles to mate, two lonely bachelors left over at the end, or with any luck two of the male gargoyles are like Lex and will end up attracted to one another...Though if any of the female gargoyles are gay that'd REALLY throw a wrench into mating options.

I suppose they could simply leave and search the world for other clans, right? Has Greg implied whether the remaining Avalon gargs are stuck there permanently or not?

And now it's got me thinking--do some gargoyles stay single? (Demona sorta falls into that category, but she's such a special case and she WAS mated with Goliath, so then again not really) By choice, by simply not finding someone suitable for them? Or are they overwhelmingly more in tune with their instincts than some humans and will almost CERTAINLY seek out a mate for breeding or at least companionship?

I guess if all the Avalon gargs are straight, another way you could solve the male surplus is by sharing. Are polyamorous relationships a part of gargoyle culture? Greg probably hasn't touched on that one. Should I be submitting these to Ask Greg once it re-opens?

The 36 Eggs taken to Avalon included:

By 1997, when Angela is gone and is now in New York, the population is:

And Dragomir, I think it'd be cool to switch to Thailog, or maybe search the avatar list and find someone who is never really used (like Hudson, Dracon, Stell Clan robot, etc) and make them your own. You don't have to choose your favorite character, god knows Cuchullin isn't mine, but the avatar has become distinctly me here. The Demona avatar is many many people here.

Oh, and I think it is very likely that the Ishimuran Clan is larger than the Avalon Clan. Greg has described the Ishimuran Clan as a "full Clan" meaning, probably, a multi-generational naturally thriving Clan. The Avalon, circa 1990s, is only one generation and theres really not many gargoyles there. In the future however, the Avalon Clan will likely expand much quicker than other Clans because it seems likely the Avalon gargoyles will be having more children due to the time differences.

Dragomir -- Regarding Thailog and injury from the fire, Greg W states in the "Ask Greg" archives that he "wasn't planning any long-term damage -- not with [Thailog's] healing factor."

Avatars -- I chose the Grimorum pages mainly because I'm a writer. The off-red text color simply complements the colors in the avatar.

Words and their meanings -- Isn't it called the "Modesty Spell" rather than the "Humility Spell?" After all, the spell was originally cast to avert scandal rather than to humble anyone, if I recall correctly.

Matt, thanks for the more accurate answer. That is alot of gargoyles, lol. I honestly thought there was only one gargoyle beast egg that survived the massacre, the one that hatched into Boudicca. Sorry for the double post. I checked my math. I was wrong. The other Beasts on Avalon besides Boudicca have only mated once, meaning there is an egg due to hatch in 1998, but no adult Beast yet.

When Kath, Tom, Magus and the Eggs arrive on Avalon there are indeed 36 eggs.

The humility spell is what allows a gargoyle's clothing to turn to stone along with its body, corret? I've personally always thought that a gargs body turned completely to stone during sleep, including internal organs (otherwise we would have seen lots of blood and guts when Hacon smashed the Wyvern Clan, yuck). I can't explain how they breathe during sleep, maybe they don't need to, kind of like how some animals cease breathing during hiberation. Perhaps they can produce their own oxygen from the solar energy they absorc during the day (kind of like a plant...maybe not).

As for Oberon's children Biology 101, I find the answer is as simple as natural magic being able to manipulate dimensional borders. It is all theoretical physics and potentiality, which is what I work with in a finally finished book of mine. Just want to get the durn thing published! Anywayz, the ppl in my book can put on a mask, as like the Chillins of Oberon do. The potentiality exists that everything can and does happen, just not in any given single dimension, but little instances and groupings in each one. To be able to manipulate that does not require a new biology but instead, an inner way to tap that dimensional potentiality. That is the true nature of magic to me. That's where it comes from. Any other theories? If anyone is interested, I could ressurect what Fred Perry (Gold Digger, Antarctic Press Comics) has for theories on iron affecting magic. Been a while since I saw that.

I've always used this Brooklyn Avitar because he was, and is, my favorite character. (That and the fact that there ISNT a avitar of my real favorite garoyle, the little green one who sits next to Demona as she receives her name.)

I've used Orange since, oh, as long as I can remember; I changed it from something else... red or green maybe... I link to change it up every now and again...

I can say, however, that I don't think it's what Greg W. had in mind, considering what he's already said about it.
And I know that I, personally, don't particularly care for the idea that the gargs' internal organs didn't turn to stone originally. I think, since their creation/evolution, the gargoyles *entire physical body* transformed *completely* to the stone-like substance naturally. This includes the hair, because--dead or not--it is still a part of the body (attached to/growing out of). In my mind, the humility spell only affected clothes and items that are technically separate from the gargoyles physical body.
Mind you, I'm just saying what feels right to me. I have to admit, I never bothered much to figure out the details about it. Gargoyle biology, Oberati biology, I haven't seen anything that requires more than the slightest suspension of my own disbelief. In my mind, if it works, it works (kind of the way I feel about my TV set).
I do admit to some interest on the subject of gargoyle procreation, though.... ;-)
BTW, Matt--I hope I didn't come off sounding too confrontational above--I don't mean to "diss" you or your thoughts, just state a little rebuttal to them. I'm just very tired right now, and ANY conversation is taxing at the moment.

AVATARS> Way back in the halcyon days of yore (1997), when Todd was still Cagney the Cat, I posted with the same text color, but a different avatar.
I was the Renaissance Hunter. Why? Because his cloak was red (my favorite color) and he was masked and mysterious (we don't even know the guy's NAME). I've always loved masks and mystery so it seemed like a good choice. Of course, I've also always loved wizards (took my net-name from one), so when the Room was re-vamped and the Ren. Hunter no longer an option, I went looking among the wizards of the show for a new Avatar. I think that, at the time, Young Magus and the Archmage were a bit too prevalent for me, so I settled on the Old Magus. I think it fits me--I sometimes feel older than my years (and not always in a good way).
As for everyone else, yeah it's kind of hard NOT to associate them with their avatars.

OSCARS> Sadly, I hadn't seen most of these movies (just "Corpse Bride", "Howl's Moving Castle", "Star Wars", and "Goblet of Fire"--the other three movies I saw, including "Serenity" weren't even nominated). I did like some of the comedy in the show--the funniest stuff for me was in the first half-hour. I especially loved Tom Hanks' too long acceptance speech, and the "Who's Hosting the Oscars" movie. And Ben Stiller's "invisibility" act was fun, too.

That's all I can really think of to say right now. I'm going to try to relax and let this cold work its way out of my system. Taking your theory further, would the skin under the hair turn to stone? If so, when they awoke, wouldn't thier hair be ripped out?(like how thier clothes would be torn off) Or at least cut by the flying shards of stone? I imagine a lot of bald gargs gliding around, lol.

I had also never considered stone sleep to mean anything other than a complete internal tranformation. If the internal organs remained un-changed, the heart would still be pumping, carrying oxygen through the blood stream, so they would still need to breathe to get the oxygen.
But when they are stone, it looks like thier nostril cavities are completely closed over. And thier "growl" before freezing shows that the inside of their mouths do turn to stone. So, does thier tounge count as an internal organ? What about teeth (in the same context as hair)? If the inside of thier mouths did not turn to stone, then they could continue to breathe, and you could say that once the Humility Spell was cast, the inside of thier mouths turned to stone as well.
But that would mean that before the spell was cast, the inside of the mouth did not turn to stone, which I think would be problematic to a sleeping gargoyle. What if he/she took a deep breath and breathed in thier own non-stone hair and suffocated? lol, but seriously, an interesting thoery, got me thinking.

Ooh, Avatars appear to be popular to debate today. Wish I was more original with mine, but Demona is my fave character. The only other who comes close to rivaling Demona as my fave is Thailog, who is by far the most delightfully evil villain on the show. He shows no remorse or pity for anything he does, even Demona has deeply buried feelings of regret (as well as a genuine love for her daughter Angie). But not Thailog, he's the one character on the show I would hate to see turn good. What can I say? He was born to be bad...MAHAHAHAHA! Maybe I'll choose him as my new avatar, I am a guy after all, even if I think he's dumb for choosing money and a cloned concubine over having the hottest garg gal in the series as his mate (Guess he didn't inherit Xanatos's or Goliath's luck with the ladies, lol)

A more correct spelling (according to Oxford's "Dictionary of Celtic Mythology" by James MacKillop) is "Gae Bulga", though I've also seen it as "gae bolga." The entry in the DoCM reads: "Terrible weapon of the Ulster Cycle, which entered the victim at one point but made thirty wounds within. Deeply notched and characterized by lightning speed. Gae Bulga was made from the bones of a sea-monster killed in a duel with another monster of greater size. Although usually the possession of Chuchulainn, recieved from his female tutor Scathach, Gae Bulga also appears in the hands of other heroes. How it was used is still a matter of some conjecture. When Chuchulainn uses it to kill Ferdiad, he casts it from the 'fork of his foot', i.e. between his toes. Also used to kill Connla."

Whole room> Does anyone know how many Avalon Gargoyles there are? Both male and female. Oh yeah, this question has probably been answered before, sorry if it has been, I know that Broadway and Angie are without question a couple now, but why did they make so many scenes in which Angie seemed to show more than friendly concern for Brook during battle? For example, when Angie came to Brook's aid after he was knocked down by Demona in her mecha suit. It seems silly to me to have moments like this when Angie had chosen Broadway already.

List of things I hope to see in comic:
1) Thailog returns as a cyborg (or just badly scarred by the flames Demona dumped him in)
2) Demona forming her own clan of outcast gargoyles from around the globe (exps Coldsteel, Yama, and perhaps one or two avalon gargs gone bad. Afterall, if the original Wyvern Clan could produce Demona and Iago, then the avalon clan may also have black sheep of their own.
3) Angela in her hot new oufit (Goliath's little girl is all grown up)
4) Tension between Goliath and Xanatos now that they share the same home
5) Whether or not Lexington is destined to become an evil cyborg like in Future Tense
6) Demona and Angela interacting as mother and daughter
7) Lex beating Brooklyn and Broadway at Xbox, lol

And yeah, the color things are funny too. I have always chosen green. When I first saw Gargoyles, I wrote my first fan fic, creating the character of Siren. Back then, I had limited online access and this was long before Ask Greg. So I had no idea about gargoyle biology. That female gargoyles eyes glow green and males glow white. So Siren's eyes glowed green, because her human eye color was originally green, hence, I used green. And have always been Siren and always use green.

- I think when you hit the center of the Earth, gravity would be equally (or nearly so) pulling you in all directions, so you'd effectively be weightless. As you continued your trip through the Earth, the center of the planet would continue to be "down" so after the core you'd have to start digging up. So, to answer your question: No, you wouldn't.

I know that gargoyles are biological creatures and I know internal organs develop in the egg, but the real question is, why does non-living material, such as hair turn to stone. The Humility Spell seems like a likely response to me. As for the organs, I think its possible the Spell has an effect on them as well.

I'm not sure why I first picked Coldfire. I now I wanted a female avatar since I'm a girl (I think I've only RP'd one male character ever). I may have used one avatar previously, but at the time Coldfire wasn't being used (I think Desdemona was). When I started participating again about a month ago, I slipped back into a comfortable avatar. I even think the color's the same. What can I say, I'm a creature of habit.

Re: Avatars

I like that every regular here consistently uses the same avatar and color. Easy identifiers. I'm more possessive of my color (grass green--hands off! Heh), than my avatar.

I'm pretty sure I've never used a different avatar. I started out avatar-free, but then picked Wolf for the Clancy Brown association. I think I started really posting here and not just lurking around the time the HBO drama Carnivale had begun. Then when it got cancelled exactly a year ago, I dropped the avatar periodically. Now I'm using it again, dunno why. Just kinda like it.

Aside from Clancy Brown voice acting him and Hakon, werewolves and/or mutant man-wolves are a cool mythological/sci-fi creature *in theory* but they're usually not pulled off very well. The stories they're in are often pure cheese or just not very well written horror/sci-fi/fantasy. Even in Gargoyles, the manwolf is arguably one of the worst characters. Okay, not so much the worst, 'cause every supervillain team needs someone to fill the muscle/all-out-thug role...maybe Wolf would've gotten better character development later on. But probably not.

heh, since we're talking about Avatars I'll just use the one I had when I first came here .. my lovely Bronx :) we should have more Gargbeast/Animal avatars like Boudicca or the Ishimura Beast (Ishi for short).. or maybe that dog from Awakenings.. and such..

Dragomir: I've always used Demona. In the TGS CR, I have used other things, mostly to get a feel for something that I felt fit me.

Matt: Concerning your points on the humility spell, I disagree. Things like internal organs are formed in the egg, and I think would therefore be subject to the biological process that governs a gargoyle. I think the spell only applies to material things.

OMG, guys, have you checked the guest list for the 2006 gathering. Now we have Bill Fagerbakke and Jeff Bennett coming to the gathering too. This is most definetly going to be the best gathering ever which is why i want this to be my first gathering.

I aggree with Greg's and Jens.

Julie uses Opehlia and like Ophelia Julie is the type who tries to see things from both sides and keep the peace.

I don't know how I fit with Robyn. I just use her since I cosplayed as her for 2003...that and I got to see Sheena Easton in concert at the 2004 Mardi Gras at Universal Studios

Matt: Honestly, I never thought about it, but I also didn't mind it that much. "Hound of Ulster" was one of my favorite World Tour episodes, and me having a very strong Irish background, like just about anything associated with Ireland.

Honestly, I know that my choice of avatar is probably not very original, but I've never stopped to think about what messages I might be sending with it. I do it because I love the character.

LOL, yeah Siren. See, thats what I'm talking about. I totally identify you with the Una avatar. It's almost like a face in that you recognize someone by it as well as by their tone, etc. Thats why I get so annoyed when people switch avatars constantly or even every once in a while. It's like they are wearing masks and every few weeks or whatever they put on a new mask. Sure they are the same person, but I identify them differently.
I originally used the Gabriel avatar, but it was used by several other people, so a few years ago I switched to Cuchullain mainly because no one else uses him. In the last five years only one other person, "Question" has used the Cuchullin, and by now i'm pretty attached to it, almost possessive of it, hahaa.
Another example is Todd with King Arthur. That avatar is SO Todd in my mind that it is jarring to see anyone else use it. I identify the avatar with Todd.

I for one also link a person's avatar and font colour to that person's personaulity and overall essence. I think I used Elisa to suggest that I 'come in peace'. Matt, I think you see yourself as a regular guy, but wants to make a good impact due to the shiny stick thingy. Greg B's avatar suggests to me a subtle control, humour and alure, while patricks, a creative but sensitive person lol. Anyways, enough from me. Bye everyone.

And I get so confused when avatars are used by multiple people. Like the angry Demona, I keep having to go back to read what that person said
I do sometimes look at my Una avatar and then what I say that is often joking around or whatever and think they just don't fit. But Una looks like a unicorn, hence why I always use her. And she is hardly ever used here, so its a little different.

Hey everybody.

I have a couple topics that I help on to 'cause last week was already packed pretty full of conversations.

First off, the silly one. Does anyone else feel sometimes that we get a skewed impression of people who post here by what avatar and color they use? It occurred to me that no matter what Patrick is talking about and no matter what his tone is, I always seem to associate him with the "Happy Puck". Same thing with Greg B, in my mind, he always has that Xanatos smirk when he is posting. I wonder, does anyone else feel influenced to look at people differently based on what avatar they use? If so, I wonder what you guys think of me using Cuchullain.

The other topic is something I've been thinking about for a while now and considered bringing up last week since we were sorta discussing it then. I'm particularly interesting in what Whit has to say given his medical expertise.
Okay, about gargoyles turning to stone. I'm beginning to wonder how much an effect the Humility Spell has had on this process.

To me, it does not make sense that the non-living parts of a gargoyle (like their hair) would turn to stone. If it is non-living, why would it petrify at dawn? Greg W has said that a gargoyle that dies at night will remain as flesh (albeit dead) come dawn, so why should hair turn to stone? Is hair more alive than I think it is? Is gargoyle hair different than mammal hair?

So, keeping that in mind, we know that the Humility Spell, which was intended to keep gargoyles clothed when they awake in the morning, basically comes down to turning things to stone with a gargoyle that the gargoyle considers its own property. Thats great, its a very simple explanation for why clothing turns to stone.

Heres what I wonder: Does the Spell, intentionally or not, affect more than something like clothing?

Lets say we go back to some early gargates. They've evolved the stone hibernation thing as a protection and probably energy saving and energy collecting feature. My guess is that they evolved this ability from the Synapsids, or mammal-like reptiles, sometime in the Triassic, but that is a topic for another day, and I won't go into my reasoning for all that here. The point is we have some early gargates and this is way before the Humility Spell has been cast. I don't think that its likely their hair, if they had any, turned to stone. And what is more, I don't think their internal anatomy turned to stone either. I think when dawn came only their out layer of living skin became stone. All their internal organs and their non-living parts, such as hair, remained as it was.

Fast-forward to the Roman Empire and we have the Humility Spell cast. I think it was not until this point that gargoyle hair and internal organs began to solidify as a by-product of the Spell. Obviously, a gargoyle would consider its kidney to belong to him, thus it tuns to stone as well.

This solves a major problem, namely what was being discussed last week. How does a solid stone gargoyle react to the passage of time in order to wake up at the appropriate time? In my hypothesis, most of the gargoyle remained flesh and the biological clock continued ticking inside the stone shell. During the day, the shell would absorb solar or thermal energy and the flesh body would transport waste materials to the stone shell for getting rid of in the morning. A good system, and one that doesn't stretch believability too much. Once the Spell was cast, the entire gargoyle, clothes, hair, kidneys and all, turned to stone as dictated in the Spell. So, the magic now compensates for the morning wake-up and all that, I presume.

This is another example of magic spell's coming out slightly different than they were intended to.

Anyway, I'd love to hear what you guys think. I'd esspecially like to hear Whit's thoughts since he is so fascianted by pysiology and magic.

Crash has Brendan Fraser in it, so I want to see that more, even if the part isn't that big, from what I heard anyways. But I didn't really get myself too involved with Oscars this year. Nothing really interested me. And the movies I liked (Narnia, King Kong, Batman Begins, Corpse Bride), hardly were noticed. But that's been pretty much the record for the while. Whatever movies I like, get snubbed by the Oscars. One of Corpse Bride's songs should have been nominated. As well as the scores for all those movies. More and more, I just feel the Oscars have gotten totally corrupted. Its not what it use to be.

Wow, the cover is great with Steph Lostimolo's colors! It's like the colors from the animation but with a lot more tone and detail, and the eyes are look as though they're actually glowing!

I agree, that comparison is very cool. It sort of makes Steph Lostimolo's version come alive, I cannot wait to get my hands on these comics. Ahh, now I can sleep, goodnight.

I think CrazyDemona made it. The first image features how the cover was colored for an ad, then it shifts into what the actual colors will be like when the comic is printed. Cool effect and it's nice to be able to compare.

Re: The Oscars

Most years I don't give a shit, some years I skip it, but considering the host and the fact that some of the nominees in various categories were more interesting this year than in most others, I watched it all (except for the Red Carpet pre-show, since I was at work while that was on and it's usually pretty annoying). Of the Best Picture noms, I'd only seen Brokeback Mountain and Crash and was cool with either of those winning. Both are great films. I think I was hoping for Crash a little more just to see an upset, plus Canadian Paul Haggis directed (but then, Brokeback has a Canadian connection or two as well, what with Alberta standing in for Wyoming and I think one or two of the cast members being born here well).
Also glad Ang Lee won for Best Director. 'Bout time. Was very happy to see Rachel Weisz win for Supporting Actress, even though she was the favorite anyway. Been liking her work for years and The Constant Gardener is incredible.

I also liked that "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" from Hustle & Flow won for best song (though only three nominees, so you can see how seriously the voters take THAT category). It was pretty awful performed on stage like that, but in the context of the film and with the actors singing it, it really worked and meant something for the characters. And didn't hurt my ears.
