I'd take Xanatopia with a grain of salt, in any case, not only because it was all just an illusion of Puck's, but also because it was much too "cliched cartoon super-villain" in tone for Xanatos. He's a lot more subtle than to go for the kind of blatant tyranny of everyone out in the streets huddled around fires while the soldiers march through the streets blowing up your shopping cart and trampling all over your family pictures. (As Greg once said, Xanatos isn't out to take over the world because he doesn't need to; he's already able to get almost everything he wants anyway.)

I'm looking forward to issue #2.

REALLY eager for issue #3 and beyond, however.

Wow. I just read back over the second paragraph of what I typed, and I think it's one of the most poorly written things I've ever done. Damn this heatwave.

"In the song, 'She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain When She Comes,' why do they announce so cheerfully that they intend to 'kill the old red rooster when she comes'? Is it some kind of ritual thing? Or is it that they just hate the old red rooster... and now they're just using the fact that she's comin' round the mountain as an excuse to kill it?"

When I was voting for Virginia Governor last year, they also needed a vote for county commissioner on the same ballot. Since I knew nothing about either candidate (I had only been following Kilgore and Kane), I wrote in my own on the line provided. So Batman got at least one vote for Spotsylvania County Commissioner. And thanks to my brother, Captain Crunch got one as well. ( ;

I would imagine that there are Society members in several of the world's governments, but I'm primarily basing that on Matt's speculation that even the president works for the society, but that was back when Matt was properly introduced which, based on what Todd said, I think back then was to make Matt's suspicion about flesh-and-blood gargoyles really existing more credible. But at the same time, I think the best way for the society to go about its mission would be to have Illuminati as senators and parliament members. There are several things I've been wondering about as far as possible storylines for the new comic. I guess I can add this one to my list of "I can't wait to see what Greg does with it."

Ok, well, if Xanatos is "throwing his vote away" I won't feel too bad that I am also. God forbid people vote for the candidate they think is most qualified.

*Do* we know that the Illuminati Society is trying to move the world towards any specific form of government?

It's worth pointing out that we know very little about the Illuminati (it wasn't even until "Vows" that we found out that they existed - in fact, Michael Reaves said at the 2001 Gathering that the original point behind Matt's pursuit of the Illuminati was to make it convincing that he'd suspect that the gargoyles were out there; if the guy believes in all-powerful secret societies, he'd be likely to also believe in living gargoyles). The only close looks at them that we had in the series so far ("To Serve Mankind" doesn't count) were in "Vows" (where all that we learned was that Xanatos is a member of the Society and that the Illuminati has been around at least since 975 - and clearly is very well-organized if they're able to carry out instructions issued to them a thousand years before the instructions are due to be carried out) and in "Revelations", where we do learn that Mace Malone and Hacker are members, that the Illuminati have some interest in the gargoyles (or claim to), and that they secretly run the Hotel Cabal. And there's the mention of Duval in "The Journey", which only tells us who the head of the organization is named.

All that we know about the Illuminati's goals is that Duval wants to make things right - and that could mean just about anything. And for that matter, Duval's just one man; we don't know what the rest of the Illuminati think of his goals. Are they in accord with him, or are the rest of the Illuminati members plotting for their own personal benefit behind Duval's back without him knowing it?

To bring us back on topic: In the gargoyles universe, what kind of government do you think the IS is trying to move the world toward: almost pure capitalism, government leaning towards capitalism with some social program, the medium, government leaning towards socialism with some free market, or pure socialism?

Actually, I thought we didn't get out of the Great Depression until WW2 started in Europe where we started drafting people to fight in the war, making supplies, and created virtual non-employment.

Matt: It depends on what post you're voting for. At least in a two-party system you can lobby for changes within parties and then vote for a straight choice. Whereas with multi-party systems, you vote for what is probably still a compromise party and then the politicians decide between themselves who they want to deal with, potentially putting back the same old compromise candidates into place every time. Obviously, this is much less pressing an issue for something like the post of American president where he is the executive branch, but even then, splitting the vote doesn't give the victor much of a mandate... and it allows the main parties to be taken over by whoever shouts the loudest and stays in the ring.

Jurgan: Government-run health systems have flaws too, though. If my dad hadn't had access to private insurance through his company, he'd be dead right now because there wasn't the capacity to treat his heart complaint otherwise. My brother waited for years for an operation to allow him to hear because the decision-makers at the time had criteria which favoured signing children with less severe hearing losses than natural oral children with no hearing loss. The government doesn't necessarily do things any better or worse - like any bureaucracy, corporate or otherwise, it can and does stagnate, and then you may wind up with no alternative choice.

Kaioto: It's probably 'weird' because it disingenuously assumes that all people interact with the tax system equally, and that all the sums for a person, or country, add up to 0 - unlikely, unless the person or country exists in an entirely self-sustaining, hermetically sealed bubble. The tax system affects not just acquisition of services, but the size of the economy, the ability of the government to collect revenue, the ability of people to provide their own services (and the distribution of those people by wage, geography etc.), the effect on the environment, the effect on product prices and competitiveness with the rest of the world, trade relations, the effect on the political consciousness of the citizen, their charitable acts etc. And even then, different people under the same tax system have different experiences: it's not like Joe Bloggs is just paying his five penneth in Capital Gains instead of fuel duty. Either tax offers advantages and disadvantages both to the individuals affected and to the economy, society and environment as a whole. Bloggs may pay more. He may pay less. He just won't be paying it at the pump, which was my observation to begin with.

matt: You do know I was being sarcastic, right? I've probably been watching too much Stephen Colbert. Trust me, I'm not voting Libertarian, and it has nothing to do with throwing my vote away. While I'll go with them on a lot of issues relating to civil liberties, the argument that an unencumbered free market can solve any economic problem was disproven pretty dramatically by the Great Depression. I can't see why people still cling religiously to pure capitalism. As for wasting votes, in South Carolina I actually feel like I have more liberty to vote for anyone I want in the presidential election; since the state is virtually guaranteed to go Republican, my vote is irrelevant either way.

You are quite right, that old political argument was just something I couldn't let go. Perhaps I should have written about the cel I acquired on e-bay the other day from the Eye of the Beholder episode of Goliath and Elisa dancing as Beauty and the Beast. I can't wait to see it when it arrives in person, and look forward to framing it so I can display it with other cels from the series I have at home! BTW does anyone have any idea where I could find cels from Hunter's Moon Pt3 (Kissing Scene) or Heritage (Hug Scene)? I have other romantic themed animation cels from other series with Superman and Lois Lane, as well as Batman and Catwoman etc, and would like to have those of Goliath and Elisa who are my favorite couple!

In a perfect world it would not matter what political party a candidate was affiliated with, and the voting public would be able to mark their ballots for candidates whose views coincided with their own on issues that mattered to them secure in the fact that their candidate had a chance for success. The hard fact is that the USofA is a two party system, and winning candidates come from the Democratic or Republican Party period. Like it or not! If you care about the environment the truth is a vote for someone like Ralph Nader running as a third party candidate is a wasted vote because he is unelectable. The wisest course if you want anything done for the trees, or to stop the war in the Middle East for that matter, you are best served looking at the Democrats for help because they at least have a chance to win (barring another ballot disaster) and as evidenced by Al Gore's current status as a movie star for his global warming movie actually might do something for the environment you support. Wake up people, face reality, by all means care about all the issues, but actually cast your votes for someone who might actually be in the Oval Office after the next election whose position on issues you care about mirrors your own. That way when the next President takes the oath of office the rest of us might have something to listen to besides you complaining about how the issues you are supposedly passionate about have not been addressed! Think of it this way, we could end up with 8 years of Jeb Bush!
Susan L - [lotsoflabs@comcast.net]

Yeah, Libertarian is the way to go. My brother is a card-carrying member of the party and I agree with them on more issues than not. The worst part about being a Libertarian is that everyone bitches at you that you are throwing your vote away which is ludicrous. I hate when people say that no matter who they vote for.
Matt - [O'Fallon, Missouri, USA]

You're right- I'm incensed about the Capital Gains Tax I had to pay on the $25,000 or so I made last year (at least two-thirds of which was in student loans). And the Corporate Income Tax is crushing Jurgan-Goes-to-College, Inc. And the Death Tax (the most unfair name for a government program since No Child Left Behind)! Oh, dear, I don't know how my children will be able to survive on only a percentage of my $50 million dollar estate! They'll probably have to stand in privately sponsored soup kitchen lines!

Still, at least I'm getting great benefit for my money (that I earned!) from private health-care corporations. Sure, my girlfriend is still paying hospital bills from two years ago to a major corporation currently involved in a class action lawsuit for price-gouging uninsured patients, but I'm sure if the government provided her with health insurance they'd find a way to screw it up worse... somehow. I'm comforted, though, every time I see an ad for a prescription drug, to think of how efficiently pharmaceutical companies are using my money by coming up with new drugs that are just as good as pre-existing ones (like when the makers of Claritin lost their patent and invented Clarinex, which was almost identical) and then advertising it so thoroughly that millions of people become convinced they must have it even if they aren't really that sick. That's the beauty of the free market, which is why this fall I'm voting Libertarian.

Jurgan - [jurgan6@yahoo.com]

Kaioto - What it makes it worse is how the media call the more 'advanced' (I think that's the term they use) nations the ones that provide more services for the citizens. In general, Americans (at least those who pay taxes) agree we've overtaxed; the problem is nobody can agree on what to cut. I believe federal grants and student loans for continuing education are generally good for the economy in the long run, but some of the other social spending I question.

Raising the minimum wage does nothing for those who don't have a job except give them an excuse for why they should be receiving more benefits. (I don't believe in *a* minimum wage, but in different minimum wages for different types of jobs. See, I believe the current minimum wage should stay the same, but add another layer to it by saying if a job requires x amount of skills/training and/or x amount of experience, a higher minimum wage is set for that job.) I also strongly disagree with shipping jobs overseas that require college education. If we keep shipping high paying jobs out of America, the average income in America keeps declining. The only way we can have cheap shoes in America is if somebody overseas makes pennies/nickels on the dollar compared to us unless I'm wrong about shoes still being made by manual labor.

Ed >> See, the wierd thing is that nothing in life is free. What Americans don't pay in gas taxes, they pay in Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax, Corporate Income Tax, Sales Tax, Death Tax, Excise Tax, etc. Ad Nauseam.

And what they don't pay in taxes, they don't get in government services and have to pay for in the private sector - like healthcare, insurance, and pensions / retirement plans.

Of course, the flip-side is that the corporate / private business sector does gives you a much higher cost-benefit than the public / government managed sector, so you do wind up with more of your own money in the long run - but people are always working to change that every generation.

Kaioto: I'm no apologist for the BLiar/Brown tax & spend jollies, though I think fuel duty is at least preferable as a tax target to people's pensions which is their first port of call. It just always catches me by surprise to see people talking about low prices of petrol when by just about all international standards, in countries where petrol taxation is used as a tool of environmental policy -- Europe, Japan, Korea, even NZ and Australia -- it's remarkably cheap.

Getting from the airport to Pigeon Forge sounds like it'll be a lot like getting from the airport to Williamsburg was in 2002. I rented a car for that. I hate paying a fortune for a taxi or spending hours riding one of those shared-ride shuttles. The only place that really is more convenient is NYC.

I sent two e-mails to the staff@gatheringofthegargoyles.com and have not recieved a reply. Correction: I was making percentages based on a 100 pence baseline, while the numbers I was looking at 85 pence as its basis.

So actually the UK VAT on petrol makes up about 15% and the Fuel Duty is about 60% of the final retail price of Petrol.

My bad.

Marty "Kaioto" Lund - [creaturecomics@comcast.net]

Ed >> Dude, if the U.S. Federal and State governments charged us a tax rate of 300% on the pre-tax cost of "petrol" over here, we'd be paying $8 a gallon too.

The United States takes somewhere around 33% of the $3/gallon price of fuel as a tax.

The United Kingdom takes 13% of that $8/gallon price at a Value Added Tax and 51% of it as a Fuel Duty.

So lemme see:
Pre-tax Price Taxes Charged Final Price
US $2 $1 $3
UK $2 $6 $8

I don't think it is fair to say, "We pay more than you," when the truth is "Our elected officials collect more taxes from us to buy our votes with wasteful social programs spending.

We just don't like taxes in the US nearly as much as the UK does. ;-)

Marty "Kaioto" Lund - [creaturecomics@comcast.net]

Perhaps we should organize a website devoted to figuring out a major carpool to Pigeon Forge. I'm pretty sure I'll be driving. If anyone lives anywhere between St. Louis and Pigeon Forge, maybe I can pick them up on the way.

tvshowsondvd.com is reporting that Gummi Bears might well be seeing the light of day this coming November(14). Although Disney hasn't officially announced it, a "Reliable retailer" that has also reported the second volumes of DUcktales & Resue Rangers has pointed out about our squishy little bouncy bear friends. Personally, I can't wait. Woo woo!
Wingless

I'm always vaguely amazed by what you guys think of 'expensive' petrol. Here, the norm is (the equivalent of) over $8 per gallon.
Ed

According to mapquest, I'm about 585 miles away or 8 hours, 59 minutes away according to map quest. I'm thinking about 2 tank fulls one way or 4 tank fulls the whole trip, my tank holds about 15 galloons, so I'm looking at the cost of 60 galloons plus 4 meals on the road. The question remains what the cost of gasoline will be, if I can go.

Abby & Ellen - There are more of us "mature" fans" out there. I remember meeting a handful that just walked into the Gathering in LA in 2001 and chatted with us while we were out having dinner one night. I think they were as surprised at the varied ages of the fan base as everyone was. But hey, that's what's so great about the show.

Merchandise news - Someone recently gave me an unopened 3d Gargoyles paint by numbers set - didn't know these things existed.

Kinda Sad about the death of Japanese actor Mako - who was the voice of Aku in Samurai Jack and more recently Uncle Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender. It didn't click in til someone mentioned it but he was also in the Conan movies as well. Mindblowing. Such a great unique voice. He had such a great character in Avatar-despite being connected to the "villian" in the series. (I use villian in quotes for a reason, and i think you'll know why when you see the series - Like Gargs, not all is black & white in Avatar. A sad loss :-(

Wingless

Wingless >> I couldn't tell you with any degree of certainty what the hold-up is, but keep in mind that SLG had to go back to press with Gargoyles to meet reorders coming in from Diamond. Reprints take a lot of time since you usually wind up at the end of a queue. My local comic shop still hasn't gotten their restock of Gargoyles #1 yet - and they still owe me 5 from my initial order.

It is also probably one of the worst times of the year to need to get something printed - convention season. Trying to get an unscheduled print-run in when people are trying to get stuff out for Comic-Con, Gen-Con, Origins, Otakon, etc ... that's a pretty tall order. I'm not particularly surprised that its taking a while now that stocks have pretty much been blown through.

Marty "Kaioto" Lund - [creaturecomics@comcast.net]

Gorebash> That's what I thought too. I read that Greg approached Disney and they pared him with SLG *BECAUSE* they had already appoached about the other three titles.

Re: Transit from Airport for G2007...

These are linked from the G2007 site, but here's a list of Taxi Services from the airport site... I have no clue typical fare for the trip...

http://www.tys.org/taxi.htm

And I found the following with info about getting from Knoxville to Pigeon Forge...

By Plane--Knoxville McGhee-Tyson Airport. 2055 Alcoa Highway, Alcoa 37701 (tel. 865/342-3000) is about 45-minutes northeast of Pigeon Forge and ten miles south of downtown Knoxville. Major car-rental companies are housed at ground level on Concourse B, near baggage claim. It's about a forty-minute drive into Pigeon Forge; take Route 321North toward Maryville and then Route 129. It is also accessible via Interstate 40.

If you're not renting, there are a couple of options available, which offer service between the airport and Pigeon Forge area hotels and motels. Rates start at $59.80 per hour, not including gratuity for Chariots of Hire (tel.800/287-5934; 865/522-8108), which provides town car, van, and minibus service between the airport and points throughout Tennessee. Reservations are required. Meet your driver outside the security checkpoint after you deplane.

Taxis are available outside baggage claim; expect the fare to run about $50-$55 into Pigeon Forge.

By Train--There is no train service into Pigeon Forge or Knoxville, the closest metropolitan area.

By Car--The principal highway routes into Pigeon Forge are I-40, I-75 and I-81, connected to Pigeon Forge by State Route 40 from the west (Nashville); I-81 from the east (Roanoke, VA); I-75 from the northwest (Columbus, OH); I-75 from the southeast (Atlanta, GA); and I-59 from the southwest (Birmingham, AL).

Patricia Lovelady - [Patricia.Lovelady@gmail.com]

The 2007 hotel looks pretty sweet. The suites are cheaper than regular rooms in LA, hah. Maybe I can save up and score a Jacuzzi room.

Any details on getting from the airport to the hotel? It's a 40 mile drive so any idea what that's going to cost via Taxi?

I'm tempted to drive it, but it's a 1,000 mile trip if I do. That's 3 tanks each way so the savings over flying isn't very big. Taking airport parking and taxi costs into consideration it maybe worth the day-long journey.

Any clue what the bus/train situation is getting to Pigeon Forge?

Gorebash

There's a new article up at CBR which features the history of SLG (publishers of the Gargoyles comic book). The article says that Gargoyles was the first title Disney approach SLG with (after Greg approached Disney) and that started the ball rolling for SLG to aquire licenses for other properties.

I had thought the deal for the other properties was already in the mix and Gargoyles got added on later.

General comments: I finally picked up Volume 3 of "Batman: The Animated Series" a few days ago, and was going over the bonus features. There's commentary on a few of the episodes, and I was pleased to learn that writer/story editor Michael Reaves is one of the people providing commentary for an episode he worked on called "Read My Lips" (the first appearance of the Ventriloquist/Scarface). I look forward to watching and listening to that.

You're lucky to not have a 40 gallon gas tank and live in new york city where the gas prices are over $3.00 a gallon. But on long distance trips I tend to save some money cause gas prices get cheaper when you get out of new york. I wouldn't know if the gathering is a possiblity until after october.

If I found a full-time job where I'm making lots of money and paying debts off and still have some cash left over, I might go. G2007 is close enough that if I start driving at 8am, I *might* be able to get the hotel by 8pm, assuming of course I don't get lost in Memphis on my way there. Of course, I would have to factor in the cost of gasoline to see if it would be cheaper to drive vs fly. Right now, it costs about $40-$45 to fill my gas tank up in Arkansas.

Hmm, interesting: expedia won't let you book flights after June 22, 2007 right now. Prices for me flying the weekend before are $467. I don't think I should consider flying unless prices go way down.

The only reason I haven't booked at the hotel yet is because there's the POSSIBILITY of using my friend's vacation house that is in the area. It's a mix of checking where it is and if it's available, that stuff. Will know either way in the next couple months since you guys have got me thinking about it.

"Word of advice, book your room as soon as humanly possible after you've paid your way to travel there."

Depending on the hotel, you might do it even earlier than that. This year, I booked my room before my flight, and the hotel said that, with at least twenty-four hours notice, I could cancel with no penalty. Different hotels may have different rules, though, so you should check on that first.

What's with all the Chuck Norris jokes? Am I missing something?

<How common is it for the rooms set aside for the convention to be filled up, though?>

I can only speak for the conventions where I was involved enough with the hotel to know what the numbers were. In 2001, 2004, and 2006, the original room block was filled and then some. This past year, the hotel took reservations at the block rate until we hit 40% *over* the original number of room-nights that we contracted for.

<Does the gathering 'lose' money if all the reserved rooms aren't used?>

Yes, the Gathering can potentially incur additional costs if the block of rooms set aside for the convention does not fill to a certain percentage. It's a bit of a balancing act to decide how many rooms to block. The more guest rooms you fill, the less you'll pay for meeting space.

<Oh yea, another question: Does the hotel match up names of people who pay at the gathering rate against the gathering staff's list of people who registered to attend? Just curious if non-con-goers try to take advantage of the gathering's rate.>

No, the hotel doesn't cross-reference against our pre-registration list. I suppose someone who's not coming for the convention but knows that it's happening could call reservations and say "I'm with the Gathering group", but I think the chances of that happening are pretty slim.

Patrick - [<-- The Gathering 2007]
"Chuck Norris is the reason why Waldo is hiding."

I'll say this - I booked my Gathering 2006 hotel late and couldn't get the convention rate for a couple of my nights in Valencia. It wasn't cool. I also had to pay on site registration costs. Also not cool. An ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure.

Besides, if you need to cancel a reservation a couple of weeks out from the Con, I do not believe the hotel is going to hose you.

The Gathering 2007 group rates are good until the room block is sold out. There is zero chance that they will decrease, but if you wait too long and all the rooms set aside for the convention fill up, it's almost certain you'll pay more if there are still any room left in the hotel. Dragged my tired tail home from San Diego last night after some vacation and four days of ComicCon. As usual, it was enormous and I didn't remotely get to see or do everything. Unfortunately, I got in mid-Thirsday and missed Greg's panel. But that was OK because I swung by the Slave Labor booth later on to see what was up. There were two slightly shorter than life size standees of Goliath and Demona and eventually, Greg, David Hedgecock and Will Terrell were all there to sign stuff. I grabbed a promotional poster and all three kindly signed it. I'd never met Greg Wiesman before, so it was quite the momentous occasion. I mentioned that I was a Station 8 visitor and he actually remembered me, which is impressive considering how little I've been posting lately. Greg wrote "Welcome to the clan" for me, which I imagine he does for everyone, but it still left me with a happy goofy smile. So Greg, if you happen to read this, thanks again. It was great to finally meet you.

Put in a subscription order for Gargoyles (beginning with #2) at Star Clippers (a comic book store in University City, St. Louis); they'll inform me by phone when each issue comes in.

One could raise the question that what really killed Charles Canmore wasn't so much Demona as the Canmores' insistence on pursuing the family feud long after it had ceased to have any true meaning. (It's worth noting, also, that the Canmores' pursuit of Demona wasn't based on her being hostile towards humanity and plotting repeatedly to wipe out the species, but simply because of the feud.)

And the Canmores' blowing up the clock tower is a particular black mark on them, not only because they wind up endangering the humans below (which weakens any justification that they can make about undertaking the Hunt to protect the public) - though, to be fair about it, Robyn did go for a "surgical strike" - but also because, instead of fessing up afterwards, they put the blame on the gargoyles for their act. (Granted, it's more to get the city's help in hunting down the gargoyles than to avoid being arrested for their action, but it was still an ignoble act.)

At least, though, they did have more depth of character than Gillecomgain, Duncan, and Canmore did (though I suppose that one can find traces of something to pity in them if one looks hard enough - Gillecomgain being saddled with a harsh father, Duncan growing up in a world of palace intrigue that made it impossible for him to comprehend the possibility that Findlaech and Macbeth really might not be scheming to cheat him out of the Scottish throne, etc.).

I'm still waiting for my Gargoyles Comic... I HAD thought ordering straight from the source would be faster...

My take on the modern day Hunters/Canmores is very simple: they are more dangerous because they're very fanatical about their cause, and for the most part very unbending in their hatred. HOWEVER, as shown with Robyn and Jason, they have the potential for nobility and changing their attitudes. Had to be pretty much hit over the head, but they changed their minds. Then there are members who are like John, who are lost without this cause, or use it as an excuse for their own shortcomings or mistakes.

Got back from Comic-Con yesterday. Wish I'd been able to drop by Greg's panel, but I'm glad SLG made a pretty decent effort of supporting Gargoyles and the other Disney titles (there were two cut outs of Demona and Goliath at one entrance to the booth).

Battle Beast> Yeah I totally agree! Now I can actually do something other than watch TV (well, it's not that bad if I'm watching My Gargoyles DVD's) :)

Ellen> Thanx, I just hate breaking into a conversation so I always apologize *chuckles* :)

Todd: I agree with what another poster had to say. I think the Modern day canmores were far more dangerous because of having been raised with a certain set of beliefs for most of their lives. Plus, if I remember correctly, Demona killed their father and so revenge also played (if not magnified)a part in their conviction to keep doing what their ancestors had done for many years before. So much so they were not afraid to hurt or kill innocent lives (including the Gargoyles) And (of course :p) They had far more deadlier weapons than those of the Hunters that came before them.

Finally:

About the Volume 2 DVD for season two: I'm with all of you who say you wish they would release Volume 2 of the Second Season DVD Set. I'm hoping that perhaps with the success of the Comic Book, Disney will release those remaining twenty-six episodes. But that might not be possible either :(...could it?

Jason, Robyn, and Jon Canmore hunted gargoyles...
A) Because it was a family tradition
B) To avenge the death of their father
C) Because they (erroneously) believed them to be demons
D) All of the above

My answer would be D, and I see nothing noble, pure, or terribly smart about any of those reasons. Fanatical devotion to a cause without a clue in the world WHY the fight started in the first place rarely leads to good things, as we've seen all too clearly in the real world in recent years. At least two out of the three Canmore siblings came to their senses.

Voice Actor sightings: I stayed up way past my bedtime last night to watch the pilot of "Eureka" on SciFi. Saying it's a strange show would be putting it mildly. It reminds me a lot of "Men In Black," but with romantic tension thrown in with the usual "Odd Couple" buddy-cop dynamic between Marshall Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) and DOD Agent Allison Blake (Salli Richardson). Matt Frewer is in the show, too. He was the voice of Jackal on "Gargoyles" and here he plays a guy who's apparently modeled on the Crocodile Hunter. :P

Just a reminder: The Gathering 2006 still has a few t-shirts left in Adult M & L, and the deadline for Anthology orders is next Monday, July 31st.

HARVESTER - I've sometimes wondered how much the war with Scotland was about gargoyles even for the English allies. Even after Demona and her clan had publicly deserted Macbeth, the English still went ahead and sacked Castle Moray rather than going after the gargoyles and ignoring Macbeth. And they evidently stayed around long enough to help Canmore defeat Lulach after all the gargoyles were dead except for Demona (who had fled Scotland).

The English would have had other reasons besides gargoyles for supporting Canmore. For one thing, he had family in England (Macbeth mentions them when banishing Canmore there in "City of Stone Part Three"). And it would probably also have been good politics to help Canmore onto the Scottish throne, because then the English would have somebody in their debt ruling over Scotland. I think that Bodhe was mistaken about the English being only interested in killing the gargoyles (though if they had given that impression during their invasion, it turned out to be good strategy for them, since it led to Bodhe's advice that Macbeth abandon the gargoyles, followed by Demona's indignant betrayal of Macbeth).

Jurgan: In a sense, he did tell us. Not directly, but: "You are the tricky one, so we'll make certain you stay put." ( ;

Todd: In a sense, I think that the motives of the Canmores we see in "Hunter's Moon" are more pure than those of their ancestor's, since they have no material or political goal in mind. I don't think Canmore in the eleventh century hated gargoyles as much as he did Macbeth. I think his vendetta was always against Macbeth, but he knew that Macbeth had powerful friends, and so maintained the anti-gargoyle persona of the Hunter to keep his English allies.

Mayelin: I'm wondering how many of these people who bought the comic were fans of the show who simply forgot about it for several years. And if so, what if those people wanted to refresh themselves with the first 65 episodes? My point is, hopefully the sales of the comic will spur demand for the DVD.

At this point, I'm not sure I want any hints about what's to come in the comics. After ten years of Ask Greg, we've probably gotten more spoilers than I'd like. I'm sure it was necessary for Greg to throw us the occasional bone in order to keep the fandom alive all this time. Still, wouldn't, for instance, the arrival of Queen Mab have been more impressive if we didn't know it was coming? Or, to make a more concrete metaphor, imagine if, sometime around City of Stone, Greg had told us all that Owen was really Puck. Then we'd have spent the rest of the season waiting for it, and wouldn't have been blown away when it actually happened onscreen. My point is, we already know a lot of what is to come, so I'd rather Greg keep anything else under his hat and let us keep a few surprises.

Sorry for the double post, but I was reading "Castle" by David Macaulay today (a very good book about the building and use of castles - part of a series that has also included books on medieval cathedrals, the pyramids of ancient Egypt, and cities in the Roman Empire). The castle in the story is a fictional one built by Edward I in northern Wales, called Aberwyvern - and this time around I found myself staring at the "wyvern" part of the name. (Which is all the more interesting, since when I first saw "Awakening Part One", many of the 10th century scenes such as the feast in the great hall reminded me of the PBS animated version of "Castle".)

I don't mean that only Demona is evil; of the Manhattan clan, only Demona is evil (Never mind Thailog, they don't know about him.)

There certainly are other evil Gargoyles (The Japanese one was for a time. Yama, Kai, I forget it's name.)

Battle Beast - [Canada]
that is all I will say.

The Original hunters were less dangerous. They only battled over a seat. The Canmores are willing to harm anyone and destroy anything just to avenge their father. Their one track minds make them belive that all Gargoyles are evil when in fact only one is.

Gillecomgain (SP?) didn't go around killing peasents and shooting the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Robyn did. She blew up innocent criminals who may have been in the building and injured captain Chavez. (By innocent I mean the criminals were not involved in this battle.)

Like Demona, the Canmores wanted blood for blood. For Gillecomgain (SP?), killing was a part of his job.

Does that make sense???

Battle Beast - [Canada]
that is all I will say.

Todd> I think that Jason, Jon, and Robyn are most certainly different than the original Hunters. For example, when we first see them in the back-flash as teenagers, they argue that they don't get why they have to hunt down Demona. It wasn't until they saw their father die because of Demona that they took on the vendetta. This reminds me of how Goliath sought revenge after the Hunters nearly killed Angela (and he went even more bonkers after he thought that Elisa had died). So, the Hunters sorta bring out the theme that no one is immune from being consumed by prejudice and hate. People can change over time, for the better or for the worse.

The new Hunters were portrayed in a more complex context than the Hunters from back in the day. Their internal motivations aren't just about power, but about getting the Gargoyles because they blame them for their father's death. Jason, Jon, and Robyn help you to see that revenge just brings on more pain. It's like an endless cycle. This echoes what the Weird Sisters said about vengeance in "City of Stone." So yeah, that's my take on the question (THE END) :0)

Ellen> I'm kinda frustrated with Disney. I send them e-mails every now and then about a release date for Season 2 Vol.2. They must hate me by now. Oh well, whatever. Anyways, their response is always the same. They thank me for my interest (well duh! I'm a fan). And then they say that they don't know when they're gona put the last half of Season 2 on DVD. Maybe it's just a nice way of saying "in your dreams"? But seriously though, I'm upset about that.

April> I'm glad you got the comic. I was really happy when I got my copy. I was like "YES, THERE IS HOPE FOR THE WORLD!"

Mayelin - [dulcemiel83@aim.com]

I think the modern-day Canmores are all the more dangerous because they are fanatics. They're not doing what they do for power or gain. They're doing it for belief, and because they really think they're doing the right and noble thing. They never really thought about it, never HAD to think about it because it was brainwashed into them right from the cradle. They've got the whole higher-purpose and unshakeable convictions groove on, and that's the scariest kind of motive.
Christine

April: No apologies necessary. :)

Todd: I think you have a very good point. While Jon goes off the deep end and becomes Castaway, Jason emerges in Hunter's Moon as a great tragic hero, and Robyn would go on to lead the Bad Guys. That's a lot of positive karma for those two.

Spooky: As of now, there are no plans to release Volume 2 of the second season, because Volume 1 didn't sell well enough. As Greg W would say, spread the word among your friends and fan communities, and help boost those sales!

Ellen

April - [violet_twister8@yahoo.com]

Here's a new question this week, inspired in part by Greg Weisman's recent rambles on "Hunter's Moon" at "Ask Greg".

We saw in "City of Stone" that the original Hunters (Gillecomgain, Duncan, and Canmore) were motivated as much by power-hunger and greed as by a dislike of gargoyles (indeed, their driving cause seemed at times more the early Canmores' rivalry with Clan Moray over the succession to the Scottish throne than a vendetta against the gargoyle species). The present-day Canmores, however, were motivated purely by the feud against the gargoyles, and only brought suffering to the humans in Manhattan as an unintended side-effect of their war (as in the scene where they blew up the clock tower). In fact, they displayed nobler qualities at times than the original three Hunters (who were among the more straightforwardly villainous "bad guys" in the series), such as Jason falling in love with Elisa - enough so to choose to rescue her on the eve of the destruction of the clock tower even if it meant passing up the opportunity to gun down any surviving gargoyles after the attack.

My question is - are the Canmores better or worse than the original Hunters? On the one hand, they had greater depth to them than the original Hunters (who had very few - if any - sympathetic features to them), could rise to noble moments that Gillecomgain, Duncan, and Canmore were (so far as we can tell) incapable of achieving. On the other hand, their single-minded pursuit of the gargoyles based on a pointless feud (how pointless can be determined by the fact that they could no longer even remember how the feud had started) caused just as much damage (if not more) as the actions of those enemies of the gargoyles with more conventional "super-villain motives" of greed for power and wealth.

What do you think?
