Whatever happenned to simplicity?

There were some "Gargoyles" children's books published that were nothing more than comic-style adaptations of some of the early episodes. Some of these were available only in Europe. I think that first image is from one of those books, rather than being from an actual comic book.

103 days left until The Gathering 2007 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee!

Patrick - [<-- The Gathering 2007]

siren hehe I saw that i love that gargoyle guy.

I know what that comic is. Europe has it's own branches of marvel etc. when i was out there I got a superman/supergirl comic that had nothing to do with the american versions and it was written in italian.

so they must of had a european version of the marvel garg comic made over there.

Shara

That's a pretty amusing link, Siren - that "gargoyle guy" (who we've seen review the new comics) does a review of some old merchandise (most of which I'd not seen before) - I never knew they made TV trays, coloring books, and the like.

He points out that the coloring book picture of Broadway watching a Western on TV (the image reminded me of Sheriff Woody from "Toy Story 2" for some reason) is out of character - this is very true but perhaps it occurred before "Deadly Force." ;-)

It was fun translating the scanned page of the French comic - though I don't know much French so I mostly went on the original English version.

Thanks all for the compliments on the video :)

I was doing a search for Gargoyles images on Google and I found a page from a French Disney's Gargoyles comic...It appears to be a comic book adaption of Awakenings, but the other two images on the site are not from the same comic. One is from the Marvel one and the other is a sketch of Broadway.

Anyone know about this French comic book version? Its total news to me!

Ed: I was gonna talk about how Greg was briefly a drummer for the Clash, until he fired himself for reasons unknown even to him. But it didn't make it in.

"If he only had time to tell the boys of the things he'd planned. With the card up his sleeve, what would he achieve? It means nothing." -The only band that really matters.

Vaevictis Asmadi: I don't recall it being used recently. I think one of the Whiptail clan members used to use it in the 90s.

Matt: Oh, I see. Sorry about that. All the same, I don't find it especially odd.

Jurgan: I didn't know that, but all the same there's a lag of several months between 11 September and Greg's first quiet spell.

Harvester: But you know... the thing with that fake article is I came away thinking... wouldn't it be great if they found a hitherto undiscovered Shakespeare play about Gargoyles? Given Shakespeare's take on Macbeth, I wonder what his take on Goliath and Demona would have been if he'd turned his hand to it?

Todd: Although your points are very sensible, I fear that you're preaching to the choir in this comment room.

Lenny: To quote Greg Weisman:

"There are STILL no current plans to release the second volume of Season Two. We still need to get sales up on the first two releases, particularly S2V1. Help SPREAD THE WORD!!!"

Hopefully buzz about the comic and The Amazing Spider-Man will help on the spreading the word front. If enough people are interested in checking out Greg's prior work, maybe it will persuade Disney to go out on a limb one last time.

Is anyone else using this avatar?

<<(I feel especially tempted to apply this to the cases where people were asking Greg about the real-world background of "Gargoyles" in a way that suggested that they'd rather let Greg do the research for them than do it themselves.)>>

I can understand that that is annoying. I wonder if in some cases though, a person asked the question that way to avoid submitting an idea.

Vaevictis Asmadi

I haevn't heard anything new about Gargoyles season Two Volume 2 DVD set I love the sequence of episdoes that have this story-arch of goliath exploring other places around the world in search of remaining Gargoyles. Has anyone heard a whipser about the possibe forthcoming Second Half DVD set?

A few thoughts on how to avoid "giant queues" again.

1. Check the archives and FAQs to make certain that Greg hasn't been asked such a question before.

2. Also check the questions ahead in the queue, to make certain that somebody hasn't submitted such a question already, even if Greg hasn't answered it yet. (This obviously doesn't apply to Gathering reports or reviews of the latest issue of the "Gargoyles" comic, as opposed to genuine questions.)

3. Don't rely blindly on Greg to answer everything. In some cases, the question might be something that you can figure out on your own. (I feel especially tempted to apply this to the cases where people were asking Greg about the real-world background of "Gargoyles" in a way that suggested that they'd rather let Greg do the research for them than do it themselves.)

4. Also urge people to not post more than maybe 2 or 3 questions a day at most.

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

I'm a little ashamed of this, but here goes:

Last night, my friends and I learned of the existence of a site called uncyclopedia.org. Basically, it's a wikipedia that's devoid of facts of any kind. I noticed that they have no entry for Gargoyles, so I've taken the liberty of starting one.

I'm not trying to be malicious or anything, it's intended to be in good fun. The "facts" on this site are ludicrous to begin with (the entry on Gerald ford says that he was arrested in 1976 for attempting to assassinate himself). It's also a work in progress. This is what I've got so far:

http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Gargoyles

Hope to have more later in the week.

"Jurgan: For a long time, Greg was doing 2 questions a day. Greg was only a few weeks behind throughout 2000 and 2001. September 2001 took a long time to get through but only because there were hundreds upon hundreds of questions being submitted around then, many of them for contests.

You can read superstition into anything if you think about it for a while."

I know. I'm not really superstitious, myself, but there's a small part of me that is. I agree, though, that it's easy to find eerie coincidences if you look for them. However, I do know that Greg said that, after 9/11, he couldn't bring himself to care about anything, including answering questions, and that's why he fell so far behind.

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

No, Greg was answering questions very early in the morning of Sptember 11th. He also wrote some things later that evening, but when he was answering questions in the morning in a bad mood the attacks had not yet occurred.

And I am not being superstitious, I just thought it was odd... something that has always stuck with me.

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both human... and gargoyle!" -Macbeth, "City of Stone"

Just looked through the archives for some of this stuff people are mentioning and I don't think there are any mysteries to be found.

Matt: The attacks would have happened around, what, 5AM in California? And Greg specifically said he was writing in the evening. I imagine the 11 September attacks were at least part of the reason he was in a bad mood.

Jurgan: For a long time, Greg was doing 2 questions a day. Greg was only a few weeks behind throughout 2000 and 2001. September 2001 took a long time to get through but only because there were hundreds upon hundreds of questions being submitted around then, many of them for contests.

You can read superstition into anything if you think about it for a while.

Also, I had a look for the answer to Greg's question from Ask Greg on Friday about the furthest behind it's been.

As far as I can tell, he was furthest behind on 5 October 2004, where he was answering questions from 30 September 2002 -- 2 years and 5 days behind!

It's possible he was further behind in the early years though, but I doubt it since I remember him answering questions of mine in 1998 and he was caught up again in 2000.

Oh, and I notice in August 2001 Greg mentions having written a screenplay with his brother as well as a novel, which he turned into his manager before 11 September. Does anyone here know anything more about what happened with it? I assume we'd have heard something if either were going forward. I wonder if it's now worth asking Greg a little more about it and whether he still hopes to get it published?

Ed

That's a wonderful new video, Siren. Great job! After watching it yesterday I was inspired to view some of the source material (City of Stone, in this case). I was reminded again of how well-done and complex the show was.

As others have said, there's a lot of good things happening now. I've enjoyed reading the articles you all have linked. It's kind of hard to believe that new canon material is almost within our grasp.

I'm also looking forward to Greg's possible upcooming rambles on "Hunter's Moon" parts 2 and 3.

"Boy, the city sure is different when it snows." "Yeah. It's colder." - "The Price"

Speaking of possibly inappropriate 9/11 comments, I always found it a little strange that in the early morning hours of 9/11, hours before the attacks, Greg was answering questions and was clearly in a bad mood and ended up saying something like, "I should stop answering questions today because clearly it is not a good day." Or something like that. *shrugs*

I also apologize if bringing that up is inappropriate. Just has always been kinda weird to me.

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both human... and gargoyle!" -Macbeth, "City of Stone"

I think there should be a cutoff for Ask Greg. Something like, if the queue gets up to 200 questions, it should be closed until it gets back below 100. Those numbers are completely random, of course. The other alternative is only to open it when there's something new to comment on. People can submit other questions as well, and when we have a bi-monthly comic, it'll be open very often. Maybe it stays open for a month, and then closed for a month.

On another note, I'm a little unsettled by the fact that Greg's almost completely caught up, as the last time it was this close, 9/11 happened. I'm sorry if that seems inappropriate for me to say that, but a superstitious part of me really is afraid something terrible will happen once the queue is empty.

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

The Ask Greg problem is interesting. With more material that means the queue will be open more and there will probably be more questions flooding in, but even with Todd deleted and FAQing some questions, I anticipate the queue filling up rather quickly and us getting into the same situation we are in now.
Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both human... and gargoyle!" -Macbeth, "City of Stone"

Wow! The first all-new Gargoyles canon material in over a decade is going to be released on my birthday!! Best. Birthday Present. Ever. ;)

Incidentally, I notice that the second printing of Captain America #25 is in stores the same day. Given the enormous buzz around that, hopefully there'll be a few more people browsing the shelves than usual.

Ask Greg: Huge congratulations to Greg for (nearly) catching up.

The suggestion to keep the queue locked up I disagree with though. If Greg chooses to take a break, that's obviously a great reason to keep it locked. But the point of Ask Greg is that people can talk to Greg -- catching up is a means to an end, not an end in itself. It seems crazy at such an incredible time in the fandom not to let people take advantage of this rare opportunity to talk with Greg outside the Gathering in more or less real-time. With the comics and Spidey on his plate there's every chance Greg will have to take a time-out again in due course anyway, so let's enjoy his presence now.

I agree that it would be good if questions could be kept from exceeding... well, I'd say 100 rather than 300, but certainly from there being too many. This may not be possible after September anyway because there'll (hopefully) be new 'Gargoyles' material every month.

'Amazing Spider-Man' sounds, um, amazing. Great title. I've not got into any of the previous Marvel cartoons but I'll definitely be looking out for this one.

The #3 preview page looks interesting but I hope they change the SFX on page 7 a bit before the final issue. Goliath's roar looks a bit too Comic Sans.

I got an "old memories" feeling too . . . which was a cool feeling to get.

We can see these scenes anytime we want, but these characters can only recall them in their memories.

(Unless they have the Phoenix Gate)

Well, now that I've watched EVERY episode, I can finally watch the commentary.
Vaevictis Asmadi

HoE>Glad you enjoyed it and thanks! Yes I used some effects in it. Mainly on the opening scene of Demona, Goliath first discovering the broken gargoyle bits, close-up to Demona's eyes.

I did lower the saturation on a few scenes, added feathering, and airbrush effect (Demona's eyes)

And the "old memories" was my intent, so I am glad that it was understood fully by others :)

Siren - [New Goliath/Demona Music Video! Click my name!]

Siren: That was well put together. The editing really clicked with the whole Demona's POV theme. I guess everyone's a victim from their own point of view.

Quick technical question: was the color supposed to be faded in certain scenes? Early on, you'd used the footage of Goliath from "Awakening, Part One" where he returns to the castle to discover what he thinks are Demona's remains. The color looked even less saturated than what I remember from that scene, and it looked like there was a lot more shading around the edges. To me, it evoked the sense of an "old memory, dark recesses of the mind" type thing, so I'm wondering if it was intentional.

Also loved the way it opened with what's probably my favorite shot of Demona from the whole series.

If God WERE one of us, I think he'd be an adult film director. 'Cause all he does is watch. ( ;

Matt> Thanks! I wanted to try something different this time. And in the end, Goliath finally realizes what he lost.
Siren - [New Goliath/Demona Music Video! Click my name!]

Siren> I must say, that is probably one of your best videos yet in my opinion. I like that you didn't make Demona into the villain or the one at fault, but rather made her into just as much of a victim of life as Goliath is. Very cool.

I second the hope that a) when the queue is empty it is allowed to remain empty for at least a week or two and b) that Greg finds time to finish his rambles before the queue reopens.

Do you think Greg will proceed to do rambles of the comics or will he choose to give it some time?

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both human... and gargoyle!" -Macbeth, "City of Stone"

Of course, eighteen days from now, we'll have to have the queue opened up again, so that people can start submitting their reviews of Gargoyles #3.

(I hope that, once the last 27 questions have been answered, Greg will post his rambles on "Hunter's Moon" Parts Two and Three and thereby complete the second season at last.)

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

I finished a new Gargoyles video tonight. I started making this months ago and only now finished it. It was difficult to make due to pace.

Demona's POV. At first she is apologetic, but as the lyrics move on, she becomes more angry with Goliath. He abandons to be with Elisa. And Demona, always the martyr, feels she is his sacrifice. The video ends in a different way then my usual Goliath/Demona fair. It doesn't end with her being just generally pissed off.

Enjoy!

I've been thinking about what happens when Ask Greg becomes empty again. Since I don't know what happenned last time, I have a humble suggestion: when all the questions get answered, keep Ask Greg closed for new submissions for at least a week. Why? With the marathon pace that Greg Weisman has been answering questions, it is seemingly only fair to give him a break.

I would propose that, whenever the submissions are accepted again, the gate gets shuts off before 300 questions get in the backlog.

Cool revelations.

Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Don't get me wrong, I has an "Awww, poor Brooklyn" moment. But I also realize he is likely not in love, but in lust. He is a little bit insensative to Angela without meaning to be. He just wants her so bad. For all the talk of how "immature" Broadway was a few months ago, he really isn't. Brooklyn was being the more immature one. Not that Broadway didn't have his moments either. But I must say that seeing Angela and Broadway kissing did help Brooklyn grow up. He was saddened, but didn't turn it into a "your taking my girl" fight. He accepted that she had made her choice, no matter how hurt he felt. And that showed a lot of maturity on his part. So the entire experience is actually GOOD for him, because it helps him grow up. Someone who gets to adulthood without ever having their heart broken is not usually very humbled. His pain now is preparing for his joy later when he meets his true love. He just can't see as far as we can. Angela is the first and onle female gargoyle he's met in a 1000 years (not including Demona), once he goes off into the world/time, he will see just how happy he is NOT to be with Angela.

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both human... and gargoyle!" -Macbeth, "City of Stone"

I began coming to this site in December of 2000, at that time Greg was only about a week behind, which I though was pretty normal. I would ask a question and a week later get an answer. I do remember the days of the 2+ years backlog, that was pretty nuts. I remember when Greg would answer a question of mine I would look at the date and try to remember what was going on in my life at the time I asked it.

Anyway, it's wonderful to be nearly caught up. Congrats Greg! Good job.

Greg B> Yeah, I figured it was someone we had never heard of. Never thought for a moment it was someone mentioned by Greg until you said something about it. But you are correct, I think it is too early for Katana or Queen Mab to turn up, especially considering the nature of this story. It'll almost certanly be a human woman.

Matt: "Wow, Greg is only 50 questions behind... THREE MONTHS! He hasn't been that caught up since 2001 or something. Crazy."

If no one minds, I'm just going to totally geekout right now and just say how I LOVED that Greg said "WHOAH! I'm now only three months behind here at ASK GREG! I wonder what's the furthest behind I've ever been?" when he responded to my Comic #2 review! YAY!

As for Brook/Angela/Broadway & Lex relationship thing: I was always fine with Broadway being with Angela, and I guess the only reason why I never felt sorry for either Lex or Brook was those simple lines:

Angela: "I have 15 rookery sisters back on Avalon!"
Brooklyn: (to Goliath) "So . . . when do we go on OUR World Tour?"

I was 8-ish at the time when I heard it, BTW, but still . . . it was definitely a moment when things were looking up for the Clan, sort of similar to the feeling I get when Hudson says, "We're not the last of our kind . . . we're not alone."

Not the exact same feeling, but a positive one nonetheless.

Mind you, when I found out several years later (2003, I think) about Timedancer, well, that made me feel sorry/happy for Brooklyn as well (Happy he was getting a mate and kids, sorry that he'd be stuck for a REAL LONG ride).

And being someone who had only the TGC to live on (but I ain't missing them) until I discovered this site, I felt fine with Lex as well, if only because his big things were technology and baby Alex. He may be mate-less, but he wouldn't be alone.

But now I feel even more happy for him too, knowing he'll someday have a partner as well!

Again, things are looking good!

One thing Greg brings up in the latest answers, a minor issue but goes to explaining in part my biggest gripe with the first two issues. It looks like the darkness of the pages was due in part to printing issues; for some reason the printings were darker than the original art. I'm not completely letting go of my initial complaint, but the fact it was a mechanical issue and not the colorist gives me some hope that future issues will be improved in that respect.
Asatira

MATT> I'm ruling out Katana and Queen Mab. It's way too soon for them, and issues 3, 4 and 5 look like they're going to be the "Double Date" story.

I'm guessing a completely new character whom Greg hasn't mentioned here before.

I'm patiently waiting for him, but I'm still curious as to the species/identity of Lex's mate. It's not a Gargoyle, human, or a child of Oberon. Which means he's either an alien or possibly a cyborg/whatever hybrid.

Heck, just a name would be ideal right now, from a fan's standpoint.

But I can wait until it's 'made canon' in the comic, assuming the comic survives that long.

And why wouldn't it? Things seem to be shaping up.

Back in 1996 (I was 14 at the time) I thought Angela and Brooklyn would get together but it turned out to be Angela and Broadway which I wasn't really sure about it but it grew on me and now I'm glad that they are together.

Also, I thought that Lex and Ophillia would get together but it turned out to be Gabriel which I found out when I first got the internet back in 2000.

I still remember the time I first got the internet I went to find all the websites about Gargoyles about why it was Cancelled ect

On the new page of the comic book with the Gargoyles waking up made me laugh at Angela, it looked like she's dancing and i'm a bit confused how she standing looks like she's missing a leg. Its sweet that she and Broadway woken up holding hand, I expect they do that every time they go to sleep

I'm different from most people. I grew up with the 1960's Spiderman cartoon(which was at least partially Canadian made, BTW) It was my daily lunchtime viewing during the 1970s along with the Pink panther. And as cheesey as some might make it out to be, it still did have it's charm and it did help lay a roadmap for the potential of the character(I also loved the voices - no one can top Paul Kligman as J. Jonah Jameson for me *Grins* Also, for those who don't know and haven't bought this on DVD, Disney bought the rights to this show and did quite a wonderful job at remastering it. (Also of note, if you've ever watched the original Rudolph The Red nosed Reindeer - then you'll recognize many of the voices in the 1960's Spiderman. It's worth watching just for that alone ^_^

Now that I've had a chance to read the article, my opinion about the new Spider-man series has changed. When I first heard about it, I was ambivalent, despite Greg's hand. The article made me happy because Greg's approach sounds so great. Shifting it to a year one approach and Peter in high school, including a focus on the supporting cast, more animation friendly design. All of this sounds great and I'm now looking forward to it. I also enjoyed the "Gargoyles" centered parts of the conversation, especially the humor. I agree with Siren: any Demona-Joker-Venom team-up would mean world's end, right then and there.

Matt> Brooklyn> Well, everyone has their own take on it, I suppose.

Lex's sexuality> I don't recall now when I started to suspect, (though it was definitely before G2K3) but seeing Turf (and the following episodes after it) multiple times had a lot to do with it. Lex just never showed any interest in Angela after Turf, which was a strong piece of evidence, IMO.

"... especially the Avalon clan with numerous unmated female gargs around his age."

- Well, there are 15 female gargoyles on Avalon, and 17 males. We can be pretty sure that most, or maybe even all of Angela's rookery sisters are spoken for, or will be soon enough. Maybe a few of them won't find a partner for whatever reason or find a partner elsewhere, but Brook probably never had much of a shot with any of the females on the Island. Other, larger clans however...

" I once thought that Brooklyn SHOULD have ended up with Angela, but that was when I was younger and more foolishly opinionated."
- The funny thing is, in 1996 I was younger (who wasn't) and more foolishly opinionated myself and figured that Angela would end up with Broadway but for completely silly reasons. The Lex-Angela coupling never seemed right in my head. I couldn't see Angela going for a guy that much shorter than she. And the Brook-Angela coupling didn't seem right because I didn't get how Brook would be able to kiss Angela with that beak of his. Man, I was so stupid! Anyway, by process of elimination I figured Broadway would end up being with Angela. So, I guessed correctly, but it wasn't by any intuitive advantage. I feel so silly looking back on it now, but I was 14, what did I know?
Later, like 1998-2002 I became convinced that Lexington was gay, and it turned out I was right about that one too. But it is very interesting to me that even before Lex's sexuality was outed by Greg W, most people never even considered him as a potential mate for Angela. The arguments always centered around Brook and Broadway. I wonder if everyone kinda had a sense Lex was gay or what? I dunno, anyone have any ideas?

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both human... and gargoyle!" -Macbeth, "City of Stone"

Interview> I don't know much about Spider-Man, and the Gargoyles parts are all we know already, but it's so nice to see Greg getting out there, and to see him involved in a new project that he's enthusiastic about.

Broadway/Angela> I dunno, I thought them holding hands just after breaking out of stone was cute. They do work better than Angela and Brooklyn, just because Broadway is nicer. I don't blame Brook's age or gender, it's just a personality flaw that he'll need to get over. After all, Broadway's a male of the same age and he's obviously a little better about these things.

Yes, Angela/Broadway is also "beautiful gal and fat guy" but I don't mind it, because it's a relationship cliche that is stripped of its annoying aspects because Broadway is just a genuinely nice guy, not like, say, sitcom pairings built on those same physical lines.

Hunter's Moon> Yes, I did have a slight problem with the turnarounds of the male Hunters, but I was never ready to entirely dismiss them, because they did make some sense. The analysis here makes the reasons for the changes in character even more solid, and it shows what smart writers this series had.

Spiderman> The interview excited me. I never used to be a Spiderman fan before the movie first came out in '02, and now we have (or will have, S3 isn't out YET) 2 sequels. Plus, an animated series is coming that I feel will have a strong run in quality television. Greg certainly looks like he knows what he's gonna do with this baby, and it's looking good so far.

Brooklyn> I once thought that Brooklyn SHOULD have ended up with Angela, but that was when I was younger and more foolishly opinionated. Being older and wiser now, I've analyzed the relationship(s) between Angela/Broadway and Angela/Brooklyn, and it actually makes sense both story/character wise that the beauty would end up with the fat guy instead of the 'good-looking stud'. I can see why Greg wrote it that way. It's just more sensible in this case and it makes for better story-telling.

Besides, if Brooklyn didn't leave for 5 minutes and come back with Katana, (and 20 years older, no less) I'm sure Timedancer would've been far less satisfying. :P

Greg's Interview> That was a good read. Not that I'm surprised, but I think this Spider-Man show could be really excellent. I was reading parts of the interview to my husband who is a HUGE Spider-Man fan, and he was just saying "Yes!" to every point Greg was making about how they're planning to handle the show. I'm especially glad to hear that care will be taken to make the designs animator friendly. I like the 90's animated "Spider-Man"; there are good ideas and some well animated episodes. But the designs did really lend themselves to going off model very easily.

Brooklyn> I've actually come to feel more sympathetic towards his plight than I used to. It would be nice if he were a little quicker to recognize that every female gargoyle or gargoyle substitute he sees is not necessarily going to feel amorous towards him. But can you blame the poor boy? His hormonnes are probably firing on all cyllanders and female garg are a pretty scarce commodity at the moment. True, he has now been informed that there are other clans, especially the Avalon clan with numerous unmated female gargs around his age. But they're all far away and Angela is right there. Brook's not bad, or even stupid. He's just a male adolescent and he certainly wouldn't be the first of any species to mistake physical attraction for love. But as Siren pointed out, we know he'll be all right eventually.

VAEVICTIS - Bishansky has already summed up a lot about Jon's transformation into Castaway, but I'd like to go into it in a little more detail.

Note that, throughout the first two parts of "Hunter's Moon" and in the beginning of Part Three, though Jon is shown as being uneasy about the hunt, he never walks away from it. Whenever he brings up the possibility that the gargoyles might not be evil monsters after all, the moment that Jason glowers at him, Jon hurriedly backs down. The most significant moment, however, is after the destruction of the clock tower, when Jon in his reporter persona frames the gargoyles for the act, without even a hint anywhere that he argued with Jason and Robyn about it. He knows that the gargoyles aren't evil monsters and yet he makes it look as if they were responsible for a destructive act that he knows they didn't do. (Indeed, I think that in a sense, Jon's broadcast is worse than anything that he's done or will do as Castaway, because here he's doing something that he *knows* is wrong, whereas, when he becomes Castaway, he believes consciously that the gargoyles are demonic monsters and that he's in the right.)

Note, also, that in the battle at the dam, Jon is still (until Goliath sends Jason flying over the edge) uneasy about the conflict, and yet doesn't lift a finger to halt it. When Elisa asks him if he won't do something to stop the fighting, he only says in a glum voice "I wish I could" - without even a hint that he's made the effort.

Indeed, the one thing that Jon does to help the gargoyles before his transformation into Castaway is not shooting them at the clock tower, while the human characters who *do* support the gargoyles in both this story and the next (Elisa, Jason after his change of heart, Vinnie in "The Journey") do so more actively (Jason actually takes a shot for Goliath, for example).

The Canmores, incidentally, strike me as being almost a twisted version of Batman (as I've mentioned before). There's not only the immediate modus operandi (double identities, acting in their "Hunter" roles at night, and the fact that they don't have super-powers but merely very good training and high-tech equipment, the same as Batman), but also the driving factor. In the same way that Batman fights crime because he saw his parents gunned down in front of him by a criminal when he was a child, the Canmores hunt gargoyles because they saw their father killed by a gargoyle when they were children. But the "twisted" element comes into play here. Charles Canmore is much less of an innocent victim than Thomas and Martha Wayne were; he brought his fate upon himself by seeking out Demona (and he wasn't hunting her because she's a gargoyle criminal bent on wiping out humanity, but because of a pointless centuries-old vendetta). And I certainly can't imagine Batman blowing up a police station to get at the Joker, and then, when he found out that the Joker had gotten away, making it look as if the Joker was the one who blew up the police station.

A side-note about Greg's interview from yesterday: I was interested to see him compare the "Artifacts" script that he'd written for "The Batman" to Stoppard's "Arcadia". There was one element in the Batman episode that especially reminded me about "Arcadia" even before I read that: the scene where the archaeologists were coming up with a lot of speculations about Batman, all wrong (such as that Thomas Wayne was Batman and Bruce was Robin). For me, that echoed my favorite part of "Arcadia", the scenes where the modern-day scholar was convinced that the events in the Regency part of the story were linked to a scandal involving Lord Byron, and ignoring all the evidence that didn't fit his theory!

Interesting Note: My boyfriend also has nice muscles and blue eyes, which is what attracted me to him in the first place. And his name is Jason, and his last name begins with a hard 'C', just like Conover, Castaway, etc. Interesting, huh? He's coming to the Gathering with me also, which is very cool of him. He's been watching some episodes of Gargoyles with me so he has at least a little idea of what is going on (Awakening, The Edge, Reawakening, The Price, so far). Arlo is like a pimple on your ass. You totally forget it exists till you sit down and feel that little pinch of pain that goes up your spine and is terribly annoying. After a few days, it does away, and then comes back on the other cheek. Does that explain it well enough ya think?

I read the interview-good stuff. What really caught my attention though was a new comic page I've never seen before-the one before the already released pages. Not much going on there, though you would think Elisa would know by now not to stand right next to a waking gargoyle heh. And Broadway and Angela- a little too obvious there! No wonder Brooklyn is in a foul mood!

I'm sorry but I just have to share this one little gripe about the colorist...what's with the "Zeus" Goliath? I guess the lightning bolts mean that his eyes are extra bright or something-but that can be easily achieved without those stupid bolts. Other than that the artwork is not too shabby.

Vaevictis> Let me pre-face this with, I'm not yelling at you. I'm not out to get you, or anything like that. Believe me.

Okay, here it goes.

Jason was a strong man. Strong in his convictions. Strong with his prejudices, but strong enough to admit he was wrong and change. He and Goliath have that in common, which is probably what attracted Elisa to him in the first place.

Jon was a weak man. He wasn't thrilled about the hunt, but he made no moves to really stop it, just went along and did as he was told. Then, he was filled with guilt, rage and grief when he thought Jason died. Then, being the weak man that he was, he couldn't face the fact that he shot his brother. He was not strong enough to take responsibility. It couldn't have been him. No, it was the fault of those demons. Those gargoyles. They are evil. So, from that moment on, Jon was cast away in his refusal to accept responsibility for his actions...

... like Demona.

"Life? You talk to me of life? What worth is there in the paltry existance of one useless female? A Simpering pointless girl who never did more than occupy space while I..." - Green Goblin

I've always seen Jon (again with many years to reflect on this) as someone (obviously) not willing to take the blame.

When he thought Jason had died, he blamed the gargoyles for their involvement rather than thinking of his and Robyn's own role. And when he "accidentally" (meaning, he didn't AIM at Jason, but at Goliath) shot Jason, he was much more willing to blame the gargoyles rather than himself.

As for Jason -- he's harder, but I definitely think it has to do with seeing how much Elisa trusted them . . . and then seeing how they were willing to stop Demona and her wicked virus.

But don't forget that there are a few deleted scenes that Greg's mentioned that could help clarify things for you just a bit. Maybe.

The Suspense is Terrible . . . I Hope it Lasts -- Willy Wonka

I finished Season Two. Hunter's Moon was intense. I really don't like the three hunters, they remind me of religious fundamentalists, but mostly they're just genocidal and violent.

I don't really understand how Jon and Jason completely changed their goals at the end. Jon wasn't exactly jumping up and down to make friends with gargoyles, but he clearly felt that killing them indiscriminately was wrong. He also seems to be sort of weak-willed though, maybe he just suffers a massive breakdown at the end and kind of loses it.

But how does Jason go from a ranting genocidal maniac to wanting peace? I can't understand how Elisa could convince somebody to change that much just from telling him the gargs are her friends. It make no sense to me.

Please, if you disagree with my impressions of the characters, please don't get mad at me. It's only an opinion. I'm just curious whether any of you understand more clearly what happened at the end, because I didn't understand it.

Random comment to nobody in particular...

At work the other day, the topic of discussion turned to conventions and, as I was involved, the Gathering was eventually brought up. At one point, I mentioned a QA session with Greg W., when somebody asked how we'd go about seeing Gargoyles in a Kingdom Hearts game. Greg actually pointed to me (for those who've lost track or never knew, I work as a Quality Assurance tester for Square Enix). Initially, I said "write to Japan." BZT! Wrong on my part. I was informed that DISNEY is who we should write to, since Gargs is theirs, and--like with the comic--Disney has to approve everything.

Just thought that might be nice FYI knowledge for those interested.

And given that the first Gargoyles story was a five parter, I would also think that the six issues of Bad Guys would be a long story, but maybe with sub-stories within it.

I'm definitely sensing long story as well, seeing as "the Director" has to collect all these "villains" and create them into a team to fight the Illuminati.

With the Quarrymen coming to NYC, it'll be interesting how this redemption team may help the Manhattan Clan -- and that's with the idea that they'll be in NYC when this miniseries takes place.

MATT - That was an odd little two-parter that Greg had wanted to do but which the execs were less keen on. The cast of "Gargoyles" would be stuck in an actual performance of "Macbeth" in the roles of the different characters in it. Macbeth would be playing himself, naturally. Demona was to play Lady Macbeth (the role that she was hatched for), Goliath would play Macduff and Elisa Lady Macduff. How exactly would Xanatos take advantage of Goliath's absence during the Avalon World Tour?

Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Since miniseries aren't out of the question for Gargoyles, I wonder if Greg would ever consider doing one featuring those stories set between episodes. I'm asking, because it's been mentioned that he wants to use the script from what was to be his run on the Marvel Comics Gargoyles. Anyway, here are the stories I believe he never got to use yet:

- He hasn't mentioned much about it, but the story has Xanatos taking advantage of Goliath's absence during the Avalon World Tour.

- The Avalon World Tour Episode set in the Himalayas, featuring Coldstone. This would be set between Cloud Fathers and Ill Met By Moonlight correct?

- And then of course that two part episode "The Weird Macbeth".

Are there any other stories set earlier in the series he didn't write?

Thanks for stopping by, Greg. Thanks for everything.

There is so much going on to be excited about I'm not sure what to say. I'm thrilled. I am most excited to learn more about Yama. See more of the Ishimura Clan maybe and more of Sora. I'm also interested in not only Yama's relationship with Fang, but with Hunter (Robyn Canmore) as well. Their backgrounds are just so interesting to throw into a mix together.

But, what I'm most excited about is seeing more Griff (hopefully). I'm not a huge Arthur nut, and Pendragon probably isn't my favorite spin-off, but, for me, Griff is the reason I want to see Pendragon. I love the guy.

This is just great, everyone, unbelieveable. I'm almost tempted to go back into the Comment Room archives and look up all the people who gave up on new stories years ago. I know some of them are still here, and I hope the ones who left come back. This is it. And I hope it is just the start.

Happy! I'm going to keep my optimism for the new schedule, with some leeway of course for more reasonable delays. Still wish the approval would go through a little faster; I'd like to get the other titles I read as well as my Gargoyles. I think B&W will work fine for BG. And yay for Karine! That's all I got.

More great news from Greg about the new spin off. The bi-monthly status of the two books in a rotating manner, I hope works out. There are some comics from the past where the publishers have done the same thing. The original TMNT Vol.1 comics from Mirage were suppose to rotate with Tales of the TMNT Vol.1 series. But it never really happened like that. Delays in both books still lingered. NEC with The Tick and its 2nd series Tick Karma Tornado rotated as well. So SLG is just doing the same thing. I can live with the b&w Bad Guys and it being a 6 parter. So we don't have too many comics to buy all the time. I'm used to this as I've read TMNT and Tick in b&w. I mean if you think about it, whenever Bad Guys gets a collected softcover book, SLG can easily make it better by coloring it later for that. That'd probably make aus all buy it again. Theres always that option. Still look forward to more Gargoyles in any manner. I still just cringe about the ability of seeing these issues come out on shedule. I mean literally the whole "Disney needs to approve process" is going to be still an issue ,IMO. I know Greg W. & comp. are ahead somewhat on the main comic series, but I truly believe they need to have at least 2-3 finished issues done for Disney to approve so the comic can come out more frequently. Time will tell.
Thanks to Greg B. expaining Bad Guys to me. I'm still not sure how that comic will do for me, but I'm sure I''ll like it. I'll be there for both books for sure!

The Suspense is Terrible . . . I Hope it Lasts -- Willy Wonka

That's pretty big news and I've gotta say, I'm feeling more positive about the whole comic situation than I did. If everything goes as planned (because 'm not ready to join the unfettered optimism faction yet), having bi-monthly limited series of the spin-off titles staggered with the regular book is an excellent idea. I'm happy to hear that "Bad Guys" is a limite series and may pave the way for more of the spin-offs if thiings go well. I'm glad the main book will remain in color, but the new one will get the time and cost saving measure of black and white priting, which is not at all offputting for me. And I am honestly glad to hear that Hedgecock is making such a huge commitment to the book. He's still not my favorite artist and I do stand by my past critiques of his work. But good for him for making the decision to be a full time comics artist. It's not an easy choice to make, so I wish him well and hope it turns out to be the right choice for him.

I'll still feel a lot better about the whole endeavor when my comic box is stuffed with a few more issues of brand new "Gargoyles" stories. But I agree, this is very good news.

Awesome news! To Karine, you are an inspiration! LOL

I have NO problem with reading a black and white comic for Gargoyles. I am happy to see Disney and SLG is backing Gargoyles so much as to allow a spin-off at all. It shows that even though Disney is behind, they still are willing to see Gargoyles is still marketable. Glad to see we will get even MORE Gargoyles. I wasn't into Bad Guys until recently when I heard more about what it was planned to be. Robyn/Dingo relationship sounds interesting. As does the Fang vs. Yama thing. Yeah, I'm really excited about this :D

THE BIG BAD GOOD NEWS...

Hey gang,

JUST got back from WONDERCON. Made a few announcements there, that I want to repeat here...

GARGOYLES: BAD GUYS

SLG will be releasing a new spin-off of Gargoyles. GARGOYLES: BAD GUYS. This will be a six issue bi-monthly limited series in black and white. I'm writing the title, with art by Karine Charlebois and tones by Stephanie Lostimolo. Covers (as always) by Greg Guler, colored (yes, colored) by Stephanie.

Gargoyles will remain a bi-monthly book (in color). (More on this in a second.) And Bad Guys will come out bi-monthly on the main title's dark months, so for a year you'll have SOME Garg Universe product coming out every month.

Now, I'm sure you have questions... So I'm going to TRY to preempt some of them here:

1. HOW CAN YOU START A SPIN-OFF WHEN YOU'RE BEHIND SCHEDULE ON THE REGULAR BOOK?

Fair question. But I personally am NOT behind schedule on the regular book. In fact, I'm way ahead of schedule. Here's where things stand.

Issue #3 is done and has been for weeks. We're simply waiting on Disney to "approve" the issue. There's no mystery or conspiracy here. There's just, I'm guessing, a guy in an office who is swamped with things to approve and isn't making the SLG properties (Gargoyles, Tron, Wonderland, Haunted Mansion) a priority.

Issue #4 is being colored and lettered and should be done within a couple of weeks. Since it doesn't need to go out for two months, that should give Disney plenty of time to approve it.

Issue #5 is being inked.

Issues #6 and #7 have both been scripted and pencilling has started on each.

Issue #1 of Bad Guys has also been scripted.

I will start on issue #8 of Gargoyles next, then #2 of Bad Guys, #9 of Gargoyles and etc.

I'll stay ahead, and hopefully so will everyone else and what that means generally is that barring something totally unforseen, we should be on schedule from here on out.

And, yes, David Hedgecock had delivery issues Gargoyles #2. But this was due to him having to split his time between a day job to pay the bills and his gig on the book. David has now taken the EXTRAORDINARY step of quitting his day job to dedicate his time to Gargoyles. Since we also have fill-in artists on issues #4-6, David is getting right to work on issue #7 and he will no longer be the cause of any delays.

On top of this, Dan Vado has stated that he has every intention of picking up the Gargoyles' license when it comes up for renewal.

I don't want to get complacent, but really this is all good news. It looks like we should be around for a while.

And I actually think that Bad Guys will help us out. We will in essence become a monthly title (at least sort of), which will get readers in the habit of picking up something Gargesque every month. That HABIT should help. At least that's the theory.

2. WHY BAD GUYS? I WANTED TIMEDANCER*! (*Feel free to substitute NEW OLYMPIANS, DARK AGES, PENDRAGON, 2198.)

The main answer is chronology. I have this timeline. And the Bad Guys story I'll be telling in this six issue mini-series is happening in late '96, early '97. This is the story that NEEDS to be told now. I hope you like it. AND I hope you'll support it. Because if this limited series does well, then GARGOYLES: PENDRAGON is next in line. And after that GARGOYLES: TIMEDANCER. (That's as far out as I've allowed myself to think up to this point.) If the limited series doesn't do well, then it'll be the last one... and I'll eventually incorporate events from Pendragon, etc. into the main Gargoyles book. But I'm hopeful that that won't be necessary. And I hope that those of you who've seen the Gargoyles reel at a Gathering can tell those who have never attended one of our great (www.gatheringofthegargoyles.com) conventions just how cool Bad Guys really is.

3. WHEN WILL GARGOYLES: BAD GUYS PREMIERE?

Karine is inking Gargoyles #5 now -- which shows what a trooper she is, since she JUST gave birth a few days ago! As soon as she's done with G#5, she'll start on BG#1. Our hope is that Bad Guys #1 can come out in the dark month between either Gargoyles #6 & #7 or -- at the latest -- between #7 and #8. We certainly plan to tease and pimp Bad Guys at the 2007 Gathering in Pigeon Forge!

So, if all goes well...

Gargoyles #3 - March
Gargoyles #4 - May
Gargoyles #5 - July
Gargoyles #6 - September
Bad Guys #1 - October
Gargoyles #7 - November
Bad Guys #2 - December
Gargoyles #8 - January, 2008
Bad Guys #3 - February, 2008
Gargoyles #9 - March, 2008
Bad Guys #4 - April, 2008
Gargoyles #10 - May, 2008
Bad Guys #5 - June, 2008
Gargoyles #11 - July, 2008
Bad Guys #6 - August, 2008
Gargoyles #12 - September, 2008
Pendragon #1 - October, 2008
etc.

Is there an element of wishful thinking here? Well... duh. But it's not unrealistic either. This is the plan. I mean to do everything in my power to stick to it, and everyone else involved feels the same way. Can't make ABSOLUTE guarantees of course. But I can promise you that I'm passionate about this project, about making it the best it can be both creatively and financially.

4. WHY BLACK AND WHITE?

This is largely an economic decision. Printing in multi-color costs WAY more than printing in B&W, and that reduces greatly SLG's profit margin and ability to put out the titles without over-extending their resources.

Creatively, however, I was completely behind the decision. Though I feel strongly that the main GARGOYLES title should be in color, I think the subject matter of Bad Guys can work terrifically in b&w. Again, if you've seen the Bad Guys reel at the Gathering, you'll have some idea of what this book can be -- even without full color. Plus we will have color covers, so you will get a sense of what our characters look like in color.

5. UH... I CAN'T THINK OF A #5 AT THE MOMENT.

BUT I'M SURE YOU GUYS WILL. The good news is that I'm getting through the ASK GREG back log at a pretty steady pace. I'm hoping to have the site open for questions shortly. And we'll definitely open it up (at least briefly) when issue #3 hits the stores.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

The following press release came out late last week...

KIDS' WB! ON THE CW NETS NEW SPIDER-MAN
ANIMATED SERIES FOR EARLY 2008 PREMIERE

Culver Entertainment Widens Renowned Marvel Hero's Web from Blockbuster Films
to No. 1 Rated Saturday Morning Broadcast Kids Network

BURBANK, CA (MARCH 1, 2007) - Spider-Man swings back into television action in early 2008 as an animated series from Culver Entertainment to air on Kids' WB! on The CW, it was announced today by Kids' WB! Senior Vice President and General Manager Betsy McGowen and Sony Pictures Television Co-President Zack Van Amburg.

Tentatively titled "The Amazing Spider-Man," the new series is being produced by Culver Entertainment. Greg Weisman ("Gargoyles", "The Batman") is supervising producer, Victor Cook ("Hellboy: Blood and Iron" and "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command") is producer/supervising director. The series will premiere on Kids' WB! on The CW, the No.1 rated Saturday morning kids broadcast slate.

"The addition of 'Spider-Man' bolsters a lineup that has proved to be the Saturday morning destination for kids seeking action and adventure in the most amped-up ways," McGowen said. "We're ecstatic to welcome 'Spider-Man' to our popular cavalcade of super heroes."

"Spider-Man is such an important brand for Sony Pictures and we're thrilled to keep the momentum going by taking it back to television with an animated series on Kids' WB!," Van Amburg said. "It's also an excellent way to launch Culver Entertainment, our newest television company."

Riding the crest of Sony's anticipated summer blockbuster "Spider-Man 3," the new animated series picks up the original web-slinger's mythology at the beginning of his hero's journey - as a not-so-typical 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school. Having spent the summer engaging common criminals with his new-found powers, Peter Parker must conceal his secret identity while engaging a new level of terror - the multi-leveled pressures of teenage life at home and school while combating bigger, badder super-villains in the real world.

"Our goal is to reinterpret these great characters and concepts for our millennium," Weisman said. "We'll have plenty of resonant material for the Spider-Man fan, while engaging the Spider-Man novice with the same thrills we experienced when we were first exposed to the character. Our stories will appeal on multiple levels with plenty of eye-candy, action, humor and colorful characters for the youngest demographic balanced with extensive character development for 'tweens, teens and adults."

Culver Entertainment is a Sony Pictures Television company. Sony Pictures Television is one of the television industry's leading content providers. It produces and distributes programming in every genre, including series, telefilms, theatrical releases and family entertainment for network and cable television, as well as first-run and off-network series for syndication. With more than 25 programs on the air, SPT boasts a program slate that includes the top-rated daytime dramas and game shows, landmark off-network series, original animated series and critically acclaimed primetime dramas, comedies and telefilms. SPT (www.sonypicturestelevision.com) is a Sony Pictures Entertainment company.

A leader in children's programming, Kids' WB! continues to be a unique destination for kids. Kids' WB!, now airing on The CW Network, has been the broadcast home for such cornerstone hits as the blockbusters "Pokémon" and "Yu-Gi-Oh!," Emmy® Award-winners "Xiaolin Showdown" and "The Batman," culturally diverse series "Jackie Chan Adventures" and "¡Mucha Lucha! Gigante," and breakout hits "Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get A Clue!" and "Legion of Super Heroes," among other favorites. Kids and their parents can find more information about Kids' WB! programming online at www.KidsWB.com.

We're still in very early days on Spidey, but I'm tremendously excited about the project. I hope you're looking forward to it, as much as I am.

Found a blog with photo and a little info from the panel Greg was on with me about animation production, though you'll need to scroll down to March 3rd. The blog belongs to fellow animation writer Eugene Son (TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, A.T.O.M., DUEL MASTERS). Limited series = runs for only a set length of issues telling a single story. Everyone commits from the get-go that they will only run this specific number of comics for this particular story and that's it. That's not to say that a limited series can't later relaunch as an ongoing series, or multiple limited series. They just start with a very specific committment.

The main GARGOYLES comic is designed with the hope to be open ended, meaning it could run indefinitely, though it has self-contained arcs.

The writer of that article missed one important detail about the "Bad Guys" series, maybe because it wasn't stressed enough. It's a LIMITED series. I didn't ask Greg why this was on Sunday when I saw him, we were both overwhelmed enough by the weekend.

But I think it might help to have this fact straight before you start asking him questions.
