Vaevictis: Hi! The best way to contact me is to try the feedback thing at my site, to send me a message through AIM (it's the same as my e-mail address), or to post a comment here. So, what do you need? :P

Look! Up in the sky!

That old lady in the picture just scarred the hiccups out of me. Thanks.

I stumbled upon this pic and thought I would share...any of you guys here notice anything odd in that picture of those beautiful young madens?

Demon@> Wow, grats on that man. Gargoyles forever!

On an interesting note, here's something I have to talk about that I find strange. Over the past few weeks, my government teacher has been saying stuff like "Quiet humans" "All humans accounted for" and "You silly human" to the class. She never talked like this and I wasn't the only one to notice. Weird. Makes you think doesn't it?

Warcrafter - [grafixfangamer1 at sbcglobal dot net]
Humans are such easy prey for a gargoyle!........oh, and my new gamertag on xbox live for 360 is "I am Goliath"

Lynati > Yeah, VHS isn't the best place to get a screenie.
Can I please have permission to use some of your screencaps, anyway? :) For example the Boudicca pictures on your site are more appealing than the one on the Wiki.

I did find a contact thingy on DTaina's site, that supposedly connects to her email inbox, so I'll see if she replies.

Of course, any quality in the actual pictures will be countered by the fact that I'll be turning them into avatars in mspaint. :p But since I watched the World Tour I've kind of thought maybe I'd like to change my avatar (again) to one of the Mayan females.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Jurgan :Thanks!! I apreciate your concern actually ;). It is ilegal to sell a fanart painting, here at least, but i didnt sell it. It was some sort of competition and the thing that i paint was not important itself but it was to be an example of what i could do. If i would have sold it because the one who purchased it was actually interested on Demona or the way the painting look like...then i would have to take care of Buena Vista layers right now :P
TiniTinyTony: hehehe weeellll...nooouuu..but i can plan now on getting the comics (once i find a stupid place that would bring them) withouth fading after seen the final prize with shipping and all.

Demon@
My only clan is the eco and darkness

Demon@: That's great news, and congratulations, but I'd be careful if I were you. Is it really legal to make that much money off of fanart? I don't know how this works, to be honest. You can't make money off fanfiction, legally, but I see fanart for sale at cons all the time, so maybe it's different, somehow. Does anyone know any more about this? I don't want to be a buzzkill, but I'd hate to see you end up on the wrong end of a lawsuit.

Vaevictis Asmadi: Yeah, most of my caps are from before when the DVDs came out, and taped-off-TV rarely gives excellent quality. I'm in the process of re-doing them, but I have a lot on my plate right now, and remaking the old caps hasn't been a priority compared to putting new character references up, which hasn't been a priority compared to everything else I am working on.

Taina's got her AIM listed as DTaina in her LJ, which is public and so safe enough to repeat. She used to be on quite often in the late afternoon, central time.

Lynati

does anyone know what happened to the gargoyles fans uk site i can't seem to find it anymore, some times it sucks being a uk fan (can't afford to go to the convention in the US)

Vinnie> It's Titania. Not Tatania.

Renard/Anastasia was a human relationship. She was in human form at the time. With the mortality, weaknesses and frailties of a human. She would need to transform back into her "fairy" form to not be human.

Greg Bishansky - [<---- The 11th Annual Gathering of the Gargoyles]
Fidel Castro dressed up like Marilyn Monroe and gave JFK a case of syphilis so bad it eventually blew out the back of his head.

Demon@> Will all proceeds be going to the "Get S2V2 on DVD fund"? :P

And if someone is requesting avatars to the webmaster of this site, can you request some non-Gargoyle related ones like an X-wing or something?

TiniTinyTony - [tinitinytony at hotmail dot com]

All the talk of defining G/E's romances has me wondering what about defining Renard and Tatania's romance. We know that Tatania isn't any more human then Goliath. So what would R/T be defined as?
Vinnie - [tpeano29 at hotmail dot com]
Remember the old Gargoyles comics!

Avatars> When I first got mine, I wanted a Brooklyn (I DO like Lex, but not as much as Brooklyn) avatar, but I didn't want one that someone else had.

Avatars> The way the Comment Room works, all the avatars are hosted on the site. So you'd have to first ask your screencapper of choice for permission to use the screencaps, then modify them down to avatars compatable with the current ones, then ask Gorebash if he'd like to use them and will host them. If you're only looking to make avatars for the Comment Room. I'd actually ask Gore first since the whole exercise would be pointless if he declines to use them.

It'd be nice if the room allowed for people to use their own avatars, but there's no way to do that currently.

Demonskrye

Actually, the cleaned up art on the wiki is less grainy than the screencaps on Lynati's site. But the wiki images are by DTaina, right? I don't know how to contact her.
How would I upload avatars to this comment room, anyway?

Vaevictis Asmadi

Anyone here watch the videos made by James Rolfe (The Angry Video Game Nerd)? For those unfamiliar, his videos are satrical review on some of the older video games that just don't hold up. Most of the games reviewed (Except for Castlevania 2 and Double Dragon 3)are based off already existing frachises like:

Who Framed Roger Rabbit (NES)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)
Karate Kid (NES)
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (NES)
Top Gun (NES)
Rocky (Sega Master System)

Or video games designed for preaching purposes like Wally Bear & The No Gang or the various unliscened Christian games like Super 3D Noah's Arc.

Of course the reviews are done for fun, and he doesn't outright hate some of the games he reviews.

That said, those of you who've played Gargoyles for Sega Genesis (I've always been a Nintendo gamer back in the day), would you say it warrents a negative review AVGN style?

VA: Making avatars is actually pretty easy. The only "difficult" part is making the sizes consistent. As you can see by scrolling around, not a single image is the same size, so it throws the comments out of alignment.

Blis: I, like several others, tend to lurk and only chime in when we have something to contribute. If you didn't get an answer, then we genuinely don't know who that person is. Perhaps some more details will help?

Johnny I don't think most stores have really stocked the DVDs since shortly after Season 2 vol 1 was released. This has been a major problem for alot of people. I read people on other forums complaining that their were stores in their area that didn't even have the DVDs in their system. From what I can tell, right now the series is relying on internet sales. Which is another part of the problem with people's lack of awareness of the DVDs.
Ozzie Arcane - [ozziearcane at wowway dot com]
"Hello Booby, this is a trap!" - Eggplant Wizard from Captain N

Hm, I'm beginning to see why sales are lacking on the second season DVD. Just spent the better half my day trying to find a store to purchase it to no avail. Tried every Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Suncoast, Circuit City, even every independant store I knew of and was referred me too. All I found were alot of excitable clerks that fondly remember the show themselves and kindly offered to order me a copy. So I recommended they start carrying it, as Gargoyles is one of those shows that everyone remembers fondly, if you remind them about it. At this point I'll just be grabbing a copy off Amazon, as much I'm inclined not to. In any case, just curious if anyone else experienced similar hurdles.
Johnny

Blis> As Jurgan said, it's not uncommon for people to not respond to a question they have no real input on. I've never heard of this person, though your description is a little vague. Their could be any number of people named "Leah" who own some kind of chat or other.

The best way to make friends in the comment room is really just to participate in discussions. If you don't have anything to say on one topic, you can try to start up a new one. But people really like it if you respond to a point they make.

Demonskrye

Avatars > Hm, I only have paint, but I'd like to try making a few avatars anyway.
Do you think it's OK to use screenshots from Lynati's website, should I ask her first?

Vaevictis Asmadi

You're being a little pushy, Blis. You asked if someone knew this "Leah." The reason most people didn't respond is probably because they didn't know. I know I don't. We're generally a friendly bunch, but if you want us to talk we need something to talk about. If we've got nothing to say, don't expect people to post just for the heck of it.
Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

Finally, someone noticed. I asked befor if anyone knew a chat owner by the name of Leah?
I also wanted to make sure if I was dead or people just forgot who I was. Now I know. I think its going to be hard to make friends on a COMMENT room.

Blis

I just saw an episode of Disney's House of Mouse where they were retelling A Midsummer Night's Dream. In it, they cast Goofy in the role of Puck, and Oberon was voiced by John Rhys-Davies (I think- I didn't see the credits, but I'm pretty sure it was him). Mickey/Minnie and Donald/Daisy were the main two mortal couples. Just thought some people here might find that interesting, especially JR-D doing more Disney Shakespeare.
Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

VA> Well, to answer your question, it depends on your patience. If you have a good quality source, and pretty good experience with a graphics program, it'll go by pretty fast. If not, expect some time on trial and error.

Let's see, the last update to the avatars was about this time last year, and it was the comics version of Demona, Goliath, and Hudson. Perhaps its time to add some more?

Asatira

Man... I wasn't complaining, I was just asking if anybody knows how difficult it was to make the avatars. I'm not actually expecting anyone to make new ones just for me. I was mostly just poking around for something to say because I like to hear myself talk.

Jurgan> It's cool, man. I was mostly just joking around. I know what you are talking about. That can be annoying. But yeah, I was in a weird mood last night and it seemed funny to me that everyone's comments were expressing negative opinions of something or other, so I said that. Maybe my tone wasn't clear. I don't care if people express negative opinions, it just seemed we had a wave of them on a wide variety of topics.
Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age, between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" -Macbeth, "City of Stone"

What the hell are you talking about, Matt? In the last few pages of posts, I saw one person complaining about the art (in very vague terms) and two people saying they had some concerns about it, and a bunch of people discussing youtube videos. How in the world does that make it a "whine, bitch, and moan" comment room? Are we not allowed to offer any criticisms of the comics at all? If not, count me out of this room. People will disagree on things, and there's no reason we have to be positive all the time. For that matter, I find it incredibly annoying, though slightly humorous, for someone to complain about how much people are complaining.

Then again, it's always annoyed me when we get off-topic and someone makes some SUPER IRONIC and HILARIOUS comment along the lines of, "Gee, when did this become the (subject of the day) comment room?" If you're not interested in the current conversation, then either start a new one or don't participate. We're not required to stay on topic or follow some sort of quality guidelines for posts. So why do people complain so much when the room temporarily isn't going exactly the way they like? Either get involved in the conversation, start a new conversation, or step aside, but don't just sit there complaining about other people.

Sorry, but this has been bothering me for quite some time.

dph: I would never go after the videos-I think they help sales more than hurt them.

It looks like someone already reported twilightgaurdian-the episodes were removed. What really annoyed me though is the amount of comments this person got saying things like-"Thank you for making it possible to watch these episodes!" There were also a lot of comments asking where they got the episodes from-I answered a few of them-but the poster never bothered to mention the DVDS-he/she was acting like the Gargoyles Messiah who magically got the perfectly unedited episodes on youtube. I could tell by the comments that the majority of people didin't even know there's DVDs available.

I've just read Greg's response about recording podcasts as commentaries for the Season 2, Volume 2 DVDs. The poster used Ron Moore's Battlestar Galactica podcasts as an example. Those are officially sanctioned by Sci-Fi, though. I better example may be RiffTrax: http://www.rifftrax.com/ Those are humorous commentaries from MST3K alums for major movies without any studio participation or approval whatsoever. There's really nothing stopping Greg from making commentaries like that right now. He'd just need a microphone and mp3 upload space on a website and then indicate in the recording somehow when to sync up the track. Like RiffTrax, the only legal snag he'd have to work around would be to ensure no source audio makes it way onto the commentary.

Someone may have suggested this before, but it seems like a great solution to me. In fact, there's nothing keeping Greg from commenting on episodes that haven't yet made their way to DVD; they'd just be a little tougher to sync since there are commercials and different edits.

Lumpmoose - [lumpmoose at Googles dot fancy dot dancy dot email dot service dot com]

None of the comic book stores around here are willing to start a "pull file" for me unless I'm getting multiple titles every month. So those who are reporting the same thing aren't encountering anything unique. I think we're just running up against the idea that they're only going to make the extra effort for you if you're a "regular customer"... and one $3.50 comic every two or three months does not fit the definition.

Oberon forbid Puck to use his magic except in training and protecting Alexander. Changing forms requires using his magic, so he can't do it often.

Actually, instead of trying to get them removed, advertise for the DVDs by posting a comment. If they are so popular, take advantage of the popularity instead of inconveniencing them. They will just re-submit the videos shortly after removal. If they like it enough, they'll buy it. I *still* bump into people that have NO idea there were DVD releases!

Purplegoldfish - In order to get videos removed, you have to have a youtube.com account. Login with your youtube.com account, and under the video, click "Flag as inappriate". Then, for the reason, choose "Other terms of use violation". If we were the copyright holder, we could click on the directions for submitting a copyright infringement notice.

But, if you do that, you'll have to keep coming back every so often to keep the videos freshly removed.

Well, we know the setting and we know that Coldstone and yetis are involved, but we knew that already, and even for people who have not read it in the archives before now, it does not actually reveal a plot -- only setting and a few characters.

Considering the vast number of mythical creatures, I really doubt that Gargoyles will cover all of them. Maybe the majority of the famous ones, but it couldn't possibly do all of them.

Vaevictis Asmadi

I definitely wouldn't say that we'll NEVER see any more one-shot issues after 6. Greg has said that one of the advantages of the comicbook format is that the length of stories can vary depending on how much space they need. I think three-parters will be the standard, but we'll continue to see the occasional two-part and single issue stories, and probably some longer than three parts.

I'm not sure I like seeing these Previews ahead of time, though. I'm sort of undecided, but I imagine there are others who don't want to see them either. We've already instituted a rule to include spoiler tags for the current issue, so how 'bout tags for future issues as well? If we're talking about either the current issue or future issues, I think we should write "SPOILER: ISSUE #X" beforehand.

Yetis...well, this is not really surprising that yetis exist in the gargoyle universe-we already know the loch ness monster does. Though I think there should be at least one mythological beast that doesn't really exist in the world lol.

Tony: Do you where it says that Puck showed himself to Xanatos as Owen in a dream? I don't know the ASK GREG archives as well as others, but I'm pretty sure that Xanatos was conscious when Owen revealed himself. Least, that's the sense I got from Puck's exposition in "The Gathering."

Jet: "It could blow sky-high the moment it hits." Spike: "Kind of makes it interesting."

Tony> Puck never said he appeared to Xanatos in a dream. He said:

Fidel Castro dressed up like Marilyn Monroe and gave JFK a case of syphilis so bad it eventually blew out the back of his head.

Well, don't most of Oberon's children freely transform back and forth between human and their true form, where Puck does not? For Puck mentions that he appeared to Xanatos in a dream, where Xanatos chose Owen, so Puck remained as Owen and never became Puck, until forced to by Demona's hand in "The Mirror", right? Is that all safe to assume and make sense?
TiniTinyTony - [tinitinytony at hotmail dot com]

It's also perfect, since most graphic novel collections are about six issues. Since we had a two-parter and then a three-parter, throwing in the series' only single issue story is a good way to fill up a graphic novel.

I think from here on out, it's all three-parters, which is definitely cool with me. Two stories per graphic novel.

Tony> New Girl in the Labyrinth does look kind of Indian/Middle Eastern. Who knows, maybe she was present during the Tibet adventure.

Interesting theory. Thought crossed my mind, but I didn't think too much of it.

Re the news about Gargoyles #6: I've got to admit that I'm not entirely surprised by that. I thought that Greg would want to tell the lost "World Tour story" - and it wouldn't be too difficult to make into an issue of the comic book, since it was originally designed as a comic book story rather than an animated episode.

It should make an interesting intermission between #5 (which would be the end of the Double Date story) and #7 (which would start the next big story).

Silly thing ate my comment.

Anyway, I just mentioned that Coldsteel being the commentator seems unlikely as it would have to be someone who is there throught the entire episode. While Iago would likely spend most of his time in Cyberspace. I theorize that it'll be whoever the main antagonist is of the story. Perhaps someone who is pushing Coldstone into letting down his guard? Letting Iago take over?

I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

Matt> I can remember that several people (including myself if I'm not mistaken) predicted that Reunion would feature Coldstone... I don't think anyone guessed that it was the missing World Tour episode flashback though.

Actually I guessed it a few weeks ago (April 16th section). Though I didn't provide my reasoning. That being that it seemed like the story was intended for comic format in the first place, so there would be no point to splitting it to three issues.

I just don't see how Coldsteel could count as an "executive assistant." Guys like Owen, and Vogel are executive assistants.

Not going to deny the possibility of an eventual Thailog/Coldsteel team-up, but I think if it is him, Greg would have worded it differently. Besides, I think Coldsteel is schedualed to team up with Coyote 5.0 some time.

I think it's a new character. Greg did say we'd be meeting some more. There are plenty we didn't know about. Cedric Harris, Tri Chung, and "New Girl In the Labyrinth" for example

Thailog's new executive assistant> I don't think it's Sevarius. At first I was thinking, maybe Delilah, but obviously, whoever this assistant is, he or she has to have knowledge of Goliath, Elisa, Angela and Bronx's visit to Tibet. Delilah didn't even exist yet, so I doubt it. I doubt Sevarius has that info. So, it's got to be someone from Tibet, and, as far as we know, none of the characters we know are from Tibet. So, I'm betting it's someone new.

It could be Coldsteel, he'd know. But, I doubt it, because I can't see Coldsteel being referred to as an "executive assistant."

They're in Tibet. (I thought they were in South America for some reason...) But that's cool. I'm a big Coldfire fan so it'll be neat to see that. though I was kind of hoping it'd be the cast in Puck's Macbeth... but oh well, this is nice too. Makes me curious about the plot and who Thailog's executive assistant is. (oy, I'm sure it's obvious to everyone else, though. Poor ignorant me.)

It'll be interesting to see how Othello and Desdemona react to Angela for the first time. (Something we didn't see in "Possession".)

It's not a problem for me, because they've always had it when I went to buy it, but it disproves your assertion that all comicbook stores will order anything you ask them to. Sorry for the double post.

I just went over to SLG's site, and played with their Store Locator. It does not list any stores in NY state, and yet, I can find their books at my local comic book stores. So, don't use that to determine whether local comic shops carry it or not.

Also, just so everyone knows how this works. Comic book stores order their product from Diamond Distributors. They pretty much have the monopoly on distributing comics. They have a catalogue which comes out every month called Previews, and you can find comics from just about every company in there. SLG, DC, Marvel, Image, Antarctic Press, IDW, Dark Horse, you name it.

The ordering process is the same with SLG as with any other company. They write down what they want, and how much they want.

There is no excuse for them not wanting to order the comic, even if it's just a single comic just for you.

I'm not calling anyone in here a liar, or anything. But these reports about stores refusing to order it make no logical sense.

Greg Bishansky - [<---- The 11th Annual Gathering of the Gargoyles]
Fidel Castro dressed up like Marilyn Monroe and gave JFK a case of syphilis so bad it eventually blew out the back of his head.

I have been reading comics for nearly twenty years now, and I have never, not once, heard of a comic book store that will refuse to order a certain title from a certain comic book company.

They may not want to stock the comic, but if you ask to set up a file, or a pull list, and you want this comic, they will order it. Comic shops are typically not wealthy enough to pick and choose like this.

Ask to set up a pull list, or a file, or what ever your local shop calls it, request "Gargoyles", and they will order it. Even if it's a single copy just for you. They will order it.

Greg Bishansky - [<---- The 11th Annual Gathering of the Gargoyles]

I doubt I'll be ordering online anymore. I had a moment of serendipity a few weeks ago when I stumbled across Big Monkey Comics on Jefferson Davis Highway. They apparently stock SLG titles even though SLG doesn't mention them on their website. At least, not when I did a search there.

Vaevictis Asmadi: Thats the thing though, when I ordered the first two issues I had them in my HANDS in two to three days (their shipping center is up in kentucky, and I'm just north of Memphis, TN). This is the only time I have EVER had to wait this long for (aside from one mail-in rebate...but thats another story entirely!).

Patrick: Thing is, its already bought and paid for. I'd try to cancel the order, but the other part of the order got here over a week ago. Honestly, this would be so much easier if SLG had a retailer here. When I went around searching for a retailer, the only stores I know of either hadn't even HEARD of SLG, or didn't want anything to do with them. (and yes I inquired....but they wouldn't answer. Go figure.) As for ordering from SLG, I'd pay twice as much in shipping costs vs. ordering from Amazon.

I just may call Amazon and light a fire under someone's ass.

JURGAN - Good question about the history plays. They were a specific genre (common in Shakespeare's day - at least during the early half of his career) that consisted of dramatizations of English history (generally post-1066). "Macbeth" was considered a tragedy rather than a history because Macbeth was a Scottish king, and to the English, the Scots were foreigners. (They kept this attitude even after James VI of Scotland became James I of England, under whom Shakespeare wrote the play.) "Julius Caesar" and "Antony and Cleopatra", though based on real historical events as well (and much more accurately handled than "Macbeth" was), were also considered tragedies because they weren't part of English history.

(One of the closest equivalents to the Shakespearean history play that I can think of today is the musical "1776".)

On to the Romances, Shakespeare's concluding plays. These consist of "Pericles", "Cymbeline", "The Winter's Tale", and "The Tempest". "The Tempest" is the one that's most likely to get incorporated into "Gargoyles", because of Prospero, Ariel, and Caliban (even if Greg Weisman hadn't specifically mentioned in "Ask Greg" that he was going to bring them in, I would have suspected it, on the grounds that a series that incorporates figures from "Macbeth" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream" almost *has* to include "The Tempest" as well).

The other three plays would be more likely to get in in an "analogue-ish" fashion. One parallel that is present (though I think that it's coincidental) is the notion of the father-child reunion. "Pericles", "Cymbeline", and "The Winter's Tale" all use the notion of a father being separated from his child or children (a daughter in "Pericles" and "The Winter's Tale", sons in "Cymbeline") when they are babies, and then reunited with them years later when they're grown-up. And, of course, we saw just that with Goliath and the Eggs (particularly Angela).

In January, Tron #3 was 231 with 5,372 copies being sold.

In December, Gargoyles #2 was 205 with 6,919 sold

In November, Tron #2 was 231 with 6,661 copies sold, and Haunted Mansion #5 was 292 with 3,519 copies sold.

VA> A good point. I think there is a tendency, when talking about how people will react to gargoyles if and when the initial panic subsides, to act as if gargoyles were merely a different race rather than a different species. And that's understandable; as humans, we've never had the experience of running into a different species on such an equal footing as us. (I'm sorry to say our track record on how we treat animals we believe to be even close to us in terms of intelligence is not stellar either.) So we look at it from terms we can understand more easily, But as VA points out, it's not exactly the same thing. Despite what certain pundits try to tell us, a person who supports same sex couples being able to marry is not necessarily going to be in favor of people marrying highly intelligent parrots, trees, or tractors. Obviously Goliath is a lot closer to a human being than he is to a parrot or a tree or a tractor (though he does process solar energy like a tree). But there's still a hurdle there that's bigger than the ones an interacial couple may have to cross. And heck, even interacial couples don't always have it easy. They are generally accepted in modern culture, even celebrated sometimes. But you do still sometimes get the "Why can't you find someone nice who's more like you in the racial department?" question. And if "Gargoyles" continues to be as good as it's been in the past, I don't think Elisa and Goliath will only have to contend with human disapproval. We tend to idealize gargoyles 'cause they're cool and all, but they aren't a hive mind and I imagine some gargs are going to be less than thrilled with a human/gargoyle couple. Probably not anyone in the Manhattan clan; they know oth Elisa and Goliath and are probably pretty clued in to how they feel about each other and why they should be together. But I can see some gargoyles who have never or only briefly met Elisa and Goliath being less accepting. There's also the issue that the survival of the gargoyle species is in question, so choosing a "mate" who cannot help to grow the population might seem downright irresponsible to some gargs. (I imagine Lex would face the same problem.) Greg's never made life too easy for these characters, so I imagine Goliath and Elisa will have more difficulties in their relationship than how silly Goliath would look mowing the lawn behind a white picket fence.

Vertigo1 >> I doubt you'd be stuck with "this item usually ships in 4-6 weeks" from the SLG site directly. <<Actually, I don't know about the "kill the beast" mentality. NY is a pretty liberal city.>>

Just because people are liberal, doesn't mean they are open-minded. A person can be tolerant towards racial minorities or gays just because their parents taught them that way and they never thought to question their elders.

Tolerance for a totally different species, or accepting that it is just as intelligent as humans simply because it can talk, is leagues away from tolerating a minority of one's own species.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Todd: Quick question: Since, as I understand it, in those days most tragedies were written about historical events, what makes something a tragedy and not a history, or vice-versa? Macbeth, of course, was not historically accurate, so were the "histories" more accurate? If not, why can't I call any play based on historical events a history?

"What we didn't see, and what myself and others would've liked to see are the peaceful anti-gargoyle types and the violent pro-gargoyle types."

I think Margot covers the former of those, though she wouldn't be the only one. We might see some sort of "Gargoyle Control Act" in the city council or state legislature, and large groups both supporting and opposing it peacefully. Of course, if they're too close together they could break out into a riot. I could see the Qmen trying to instigate a riot, if they could make it look like the pro-gargoyle side started it.

I don't think there's any shame in saying you watched Power Rangers- I'm sure most of us did at some point (please no one post saying, "Nuh-uh, I never did!"). At times I liked it, especially earlier on, but eventually I realized how painfully repetitive it was. I'd estimate four out of five episodes were exactly the same, except for the civilian parts. And all that damn stock footage with the zords, and they fought every giant monster exactly the same way. They should have limited the zords to every other episode. An even bigger problem, though, was that none of the Rangers had individual personalities. They did when they were civilians, but their fighting styles were not in any way affected by their personalities. Wow, I've gone off-topic preaching to the choir, eh? What I was getting at was that there were some things I liked in Power Rangers, but I don't think I ever chose to watch it instead of Gargoyles. Actually, I'm not sure I could. In my local syndication scheme, both of the shows were on Fox, so there's no way they could have competed. Weird, considering Gargoyles was intended to match up against PR.

Continuing my posts on Shakespeare and "Gargoyles", I now turn to the history plays. All ten of these take place after Demona and Macbeth had to leave Scotland in 1057 and were roaming the world, so it's possible that either of them might have been in the area during some of the events that the history plays were based upon (though, since Demona was still turning to stone in the daytime until the events in "The Mirror", and would have been keeping herself well away from humans if she could help it, she would have been far less likely to get involved in, say, the Wars of the Roses, than Macbeth might have been). The thought of Macbeth having an encounter with Richard III, in particular, is one that I find appealing.

(As yet, we don't know where Macbeth and Demona were during the events of those plays - all that we know about their movements prior to the 20th century is that Demona was in Florence in 1495.)

There's also always the possibility that Brooklyn might have been deposited by the Phoenix Gate in that time period (though, like Demona, he'd only be able to witness the ones that took place at night), or that Puck or another one of the Children of Oberon in disguise was in the area (though probably as only an observer).

We do know one piece of the history plays that has made it into the "canon-in-training" section: Dingo's real name being Harry Monmouth (an a.k.a. of Prince Hal/Henry V). Which makes it very appropriate that (also in the "canon-in-training" section) one of the antagonists in "Bad Guys" was to be named Falstaff.

(The history plays consist of two relatively minor ones - "King John" and "Henry VIII" - and a cycle of eight plays involving England's descent into the Wars of the Roses: Richard II, Henry IV Parts One and Two, Henry V, Henry VI Parts One, Two, and Three, and Richard III. For the most part, the eight-play cycle has been phenomenally influential over how we popularly perceive this period of English history, with one exception: in Henry VI Part One, Shakespeare portrayed Joan of Arc as a witch in league with the Devil, who isn't even a very effectual assistant to the French - every time that she liberates a town from the English, the English speedily recapture it. At the time that Shakespeare was writing the play, the English were still sore at her for turning the tide of the Hundred Years' War against them. At least his mud-slinging at Joan didn't stick the way that his mud-slinging at Macbeth did.)

Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Speaking of attitudes on gargoyles after Hunters Moon. I seem to recall a discussion we once had in here about there being more than the two "sides" in the issue we saw in TGC. Obviously, we have the Quarrymen who are the violent anti-gargoyle types, and we had the PIT crew who were the peaceful pro-gargoyle types. What we didn't see, and what myself and others would've liked to see are the peaceful anti-gargoyle types and the violent pro-gargoyle types. Just a thought that occurred to me this morning...

Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troops and Aladdin got past 65 episodes.

Now that I think about it, Lilo and Stitch is the only other recent Disney show to even reach 65 episodes. But yeah my point is that that Disney and well as other networks who make programming for kids have rediculously highered their expectations. Whatever happened to that idea, that if you try too hard to achieve a goal, you're more than likely to fail?

Back in the days, wasn't there a standing rule from Disney about its series having 65 episodes, no more no less, no matter how popular? Or is that just an urban rumor?

Blaqthourne & Crimson Fury> From what I've heard, the un-Americanized/dubbed version of Power Rangers is actually a decent show--for those who enjoy Super Sentai shows. I guess it would have to be since it's been running since early-1992 and new episodes are STILL being made.

I'm not saying it's a bad show. Still Gargoyles is without question better in the character and story department. I was pointing out that it isn't the competition which killed the, but the companies decision.

IMO, when Gargoyles was just starting I believe Disney was still in their mentality of aiming for the entire family. Sure back when they were still going for entertaining the entire family rather than just kids/teens they were concerned about money and ratings, but they kept a clear head. For instance, Darkwing Duck was changed from a spy type to a superhero show because they felt the concept lacked heart.

Now back to the point I was trying to make. Was Disney wrong for wanting the show to garner money and ratings? No. Were they wrong for unrealistically high expectations? I would think yes. It seems like compared to the early 90s, a cartoon has to be a full blown fad to get respect from the network. Meaning just good, great or successful isn't good enough.

Today for instance Kim Possible is the only Disney cartoon of this decade to get to episode 65 and beyond. American Dragon will end before getting a 55th episode. It might seem like I'm exaggerating, but remember the Disney Afternoon. Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers, and Talespin weren't as big in ratings as say Ducktales, Darkwing Duck, Goof Troops or Aladdin, but they at least got to episode 65 before ending. To go outside of Disney, Mighty Max is another example. While it wasn't as popular as other shows of the decade, it was still good enough to make it to 65 episodes, whereas today the series would most likely have been haulted at 26/39 episodes.

I mean Power Rangers outdid Gargoyles in the ratings from the beginning (Not that I'm saying that higher ratings necessarily mean better), so Disney should have tried using another Japanese show to compete with Power Rangers.

Now if they simply continued Gargoyles past Season 2 with the same creative team and continued syndication then the show would have at least had more episodes and maybe be the Transformer, Ninja Turtles and Batman of the late 90s.

That's what I was refering to. Though, it is also due to Disney's poor managing choice as well. From what I hear, Gargoyles was at least still a hit before the Goliath Chronicles aired. I'm just saying if Disney stuck with the creative team and Greg for the 3rd season, the show would have at least seen another season or at least have the same familiarity as Ninja Turtles and Transformer.

And lets face, when's the last time a character driven show maintained it's quality with an entirely different creative team?

Shakespeare, comedies> I know Greg has mentioned a few times Bottom's role in the existence of the actual play for Midsummer's Night Dream. There's of course the stuff on the front page for Ask Greg about The Tempest, and a few answers in the archive (I know I've asked two in the past). It's a bit harder to pin things on the other plays that are as much fun as MND and Tempest, because they don't have such obvious magic aspects. I like the idea of mistaken identities, and the humor that causes. So I can't say too much off the top of my head. I need to look them up.

And speaking of the Labyrinth girl, I know I was half-joking over a week ago when I suggested she might be related to Margot. But reading back over the comic a third time, what she says to Al on the second-to-last page suggests that she might be related to someone who has a narrow-minded view of gargoyles. I'm not saying it's Margot, but the way she's sitting when she says "it's not that..." to Al suggests something. Just a thought.

Phoenician-actually, I don't know about the "kill the beast" mentality. NY is a pretty liberal city.

I just thought of something-if I were to find out that a new race of sentient beings existed, and I learned that one of them hooked up with a human...I'de be curious. I would want to know details, see pictures. I think if G and E's relationship was made known to the public, they would constantly have to deal with a media circus trying to get at them. Elisa's reputation and career would most likely be shot. I think this is one of the reasons she's afraid to hook up with Goliath. She can never be seen with him by anyone except their closest friends and relatives.

*SPOILERS*

I think this ties into what morgan said to her in #3. His innocent remark struck her on so many levels.

"Whoa, Tiny, you mean there's more than one of you?" "My name is not Tiny! I am Goliath!" - Elisa and Tiny

Some thoughts over further possible elements of "Gargoyles" from Shakespeare, this time from the tragedies.

"Macbeth" and "Othello" have both already gotten in, of course. "Hamlet" provided Ophelia's name and a couple of quotes (Elisa doing her version of the "There are more things in heaven and earth" line in "Heritage", and the Xanatos Program parodying the "Alas, poor Yorick" line in "Future Tense"), Xanatos quoted "King Lear" in "Vows" (the "Reason not the need" line - which is particularly cheeky of him, since in the original play, Lear was saying that to one of his daughters), and Gargoyles #2 had quotes from "Romeo and Juliet" in the library scene.

As I've mentioned before, I think that Thailog echoes Edmund from "King Lear" in the role of the scheming illegitimate son. We know that Greg planned to incorporate further material from "Romeo and Juliet" in the form of Terry and Sphinx of "The New Olympians" as counterparts to the star-crossed lovers and Queen Mab as Oberon's mother. (And there's that two-parter about the characters getting stuck in a performance of "Macbeth" that Greg wanted to do as well.)

There is one element in #3 that I think just could wind up getting involved with Shakespeare's tragedies.

* SPOILERS BELOW *

Greg once did a ramble about "Titus Andronicus" (Shakespeare's first tragedy, a sort of Elizabethan "slasher-play" set in ancient Rome), in the course of which he commented that one of the characters, Queen Tamora of the Goths, had a perfect name for a "Gargoyles" character. Now, the nameless woman in the Labyrinth in #3 does have a certain Goth-look about her - a different sort of Goth from the kind found in "Titus Andronicus", but still, I find myself wondering this. What if her name turns out to be Tamora?

Purplegoldfish > Yes, the gargoyles are certainly based, loosely, on humans. I was going to say, how could they not be, since humans are the only sentient race we have as a model. But I guess they could be based on the personalities of a animal species such as cats or bears or snakes, kind of the way Bronx is based vaguely on a dog.

But of course, even if they had been based on an animal species, in terms of personality traits, to some extent no fictional race can avoid being based on humans, since we are the only sentient race we know of. We have no other concept of intelligent life for comparison. We have no way of imagining what other forms of intelligence there could be, how different they are from us.

And of course, as Greg has said, he is not interested in telling stories about the "other," so gargoyles and fae are intentionally similar to humans.

Purplegoldfish, I imagine something similar as well. For me, if greater Manhattan found out, I imagine something similar to the Beauty & the Beast song, "Kill the Beast!"

So kinda obvious, since B&tB was part of the Garg pitch. Nevertheless . . . .

Again, another reason why TGC tanked: they merely called Elisa a "Gargoyle sympathizer" or something of the sort.

"I'm wondering, Elisa finds Goliath attractive, but is she thinking of him in human terms? For all his similarities, he's not human, but there's a temptation to see him as a human with wings."

I think she is thinking in human terms. How can she not? She was born and raised a human-she's only known of the gargoyles' existance for a few years. I think maybe she's attracted to him at first simply because of his unique and exotic appearance. Some women go for exotic. Of course, goliath isn't the same way-he knows humans exist so she's not exotic to him. She's probably pretty for a human in a shrug sense to him. Humans are a dime a dozen. I wonder how attractive he finds her as a human after "The Mirror" though. Does she become more beautiful to him because he loves her, or is she in gargoyle terms, the equivalent of a very ugly gargoyle lol.

Back on topic- G/E's relationship is very unique, that's what makes it so compelling. We understand how and why they became so close because we watched the episodes. But what would an outsider think (within the show)? An average joe who lives in Manhattan that's heard about the gargoyles and doesn't know what to make of them. What would they think if they found out about G/E-repulsed? I'm sure a lot of people would be. I also wonder what outsider gargoyles would think.

Vaevictis- I'm not saying that humans and gargoyles are the same. I know they're a totally different species. But gargoyles share the one trait that science claims seperates us humans from the rest of the animal kindom-the ability to communicate through speech. I think the first time Goliath opens his mouth and Elisa says "You can talk?" is when she starts to become drawn to him. So basically what I'm saying is, from a design point of view, gargoyles are BASED on humans-as opposed to resembling little talking bears or something. I'm not saying gargoyles are humans with wings, I'm just giving reasons of why a human could be physically attracted to one of them.

Whew, okay I gotta stop with these long posts :)

Purplegoldfish - [skydragonn at aol dot com]
"Whoa, Tiny, you mean there's more than one of you?" "My name is not Tiny! I am Goliath!" - Elisa and Tiny

<<Gargoyles are sentient and similar to humans in all ways except appearance and culture.>>
I disagree. Gargoyles are not mammals, they are quite removed from humanity. Despite considerable similarities (speech, emotion, intelligence, morality, etc.) gargoyles are an entirely different species and so, would be both biologically and *psychologically* distinct from humans.

I also feel it is important to point out that almost all examples of inter-species breeding are of animals kept in zoos, where they exibit a wide range of behaviors never seen in the wild. Wild animals can interbreed but it is much, much more rare.

But I agree that the relationship between Goliath and Elisa should not be compared to bestiality. There is no real-world equivalent, it is most similar to fantasy examples of humans marrying elves, gods, nymphs, werewolves, etc. Except that in this case there is no biological compatibility.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Today, April 23, is the traditional birthday of William Shakespeare - and therefore (to me) the ideal time to ponder the question of which new Shakespearean elements will get into "Gargoyles", now that the comic is under way.

I'm going to do a series of posts (today and tomorrow, at least) which will look into the different plays of Shakespeare's and speculate on how they might be incorporated into the Gargoyles Universe. We know that some of Shakespeare's work has already gotten into "Gargoyles" in two different ways: directly (Macbeth, the Weird Sisters, Oberon, Titania, and Puck as characters) and metaphorically (such as the ColdTrio being modelled on Othello, Desdemona, and Iago). (There's also a third way: Shakespearean quotes. But I won't get into that just now.)

To start off with, I'll have a look at the comedies.

These will most likely get into "Gargoyles" mainly in a metaphorical sense, since the characters in Shakespeare's comedies are mainly people whom you wouldn't expect to survive into modern times (the obvious exceptions being Oberon, Titania, and Puck - and they're already in).

I've sometimes thought that there's a certain general similarity between Demona and Shylock, in the sense that both are members of a persecuted minority who turn upon their persecutors in an embittered mood for a vengeance just as bad (if not worse) as the original persecution - though that's such a common concept that I suspect we'd still have Demona the way that she is in the series even if Shakespeare had never written "The Merchant of Venice". (And there is one substantial difference: Shylock is fueled only by the anger over being mistreated by the Christians in Venice for being a Jew. He doesn't have the "buried guilt" element that Demona has, which fuels her hatred all the more.) As a side-note, I suspect that if Demona had ever seen or read "The Merchant of Venice", she'd have thought that Shylock was being singularly unambitious: just one pound of flesh from one Venetian? Demona certainly wouldn't settle for just one pound of flesh from one human (well, maybe if that human was Elisa); she wants to wipe them all out.

Greg Weisman suggested that Brooklyn and Katana's relationship would be like that of Benedick and Beatrice in "Much Ado About Nothing", which ought to be fun to see.

There is one off-stage legendary figure in Shakespeare's comedies who could show up in "Gargoyles": Herne, the leader of the Wild Hunt. He gets mentioned in "The Merry Wives of Windsor", though he never appears as an actual character (but then, neither does Queen Mab in "Romeo and Juliet"). Of course, Falstaff shows up in "The Merry Wives of Windsor", and we do know that Greg had planned for a namesake character in the "Bad Guys" spin-off, though the inspiration for him would be far more likely to come from the Henry IV plays where Falstaff is far better handled. ("The Merry Wives of Windsor" is almost the Falstaffian equivalent to the Goliath Chronicles, except that Shakespeare actually wrote that play; his acting company didn't hire somebody else to write a play featuring Falstaff who wasn't as familiar with the old fat knight as Shakespeare was.)

NEXT: The tragedies.
