From what I understand, compared to the first one, the second didn't do anywhere near as well. Hell, to this day I still find at least one person at random who comes up to me while I'm wearing either a garg shirt or one of my con shirts and asks me about the show. Invariably they're surprised when I tell them that it's out on DVD. I still find people who don't know about the discs and certainly don't know about the comics let alone anything else. I firmly believe that it's possible to get the word out to more people. And heck, what about spreading to other countries? There's an idea.

Considering Amazon keeps selling out of DVDs and restocking, I'm starting to think at this point Disney had no intention of finishing the DVD releases and just wanted us to buy more DVDs.

I hate to sound so negative but I never trusted them from the start because they didn't post any actual sales figures, we just had to take their word for it that it didn't "sell well enough" whatever their definition of that may be.

It's not a bad idea per se but in all reality the one thing that will make Disney stand up and take notice best is sheer numbers. The second DVD just hasn't sold all that well. That's the main reason we've not seen the rest of season 2 released. At least that's how I understand the situation. If anyone else has a different take on things, feel free to chime in.

First off, I just found this site and, I like it a lot. This thing has everything. As for about Season 2 Vol.2 I know were all like. In a panic about this. But, has anyone even thought about starting a petition to get Disney to realese the rest of the series out on DVD? I really think thats what we should do. Right now me and a friend of mine have started a petition to keep the show Dragon Booster going. Maybe we can start 1 for Gargoyles as well.

MATT - I just watched "Deadly Force" myself. The part where I'd thought I heard the name "Atkinson" was just after Dr. Sato said "400 watts" to the guy with the paddles, at the start of Act III. But I'm wondering now if I heard some other word or group of words and mistook it for "Atkinson".

VAEVICTIS - Yes, Gawain and Ragnell are married in Green. In that book, their marriage lasted for seven years, after which Ragnell died or disappeared; one option that Green lists is that she withdrew to a forest in Wales and there gave birth to their son, whom Green suggests was Percival (inspired by the fact that there was an actual medieval legend about Gawain having a son brought up in secret known as "The Fair Unknown").

In the conventional medieval texts, Percival is the son of King Pellinore; after Pellinore was slain (by Gawain, ironically), Pellinore's widow went into hiding with her new-born son Percival, whom she kept deliberately ignorant about the very existence of knights (until, when he was a teenager, he saw a few knights riding through the woods and decided that he wanted to be one of them - though initially he mistook them for angels). But that's another story.

Hi guys, I have a question. I read in the Wiki and the archives here that Greg considers Percival to be the illegitimate son of Gawain and Ragnall. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Ragnall his wife? I don't know whether Greg is changing that detail, but since he said he got the idea from R.L. Green, which I haven't read yet (still waiting on the inter-library loan request) is anybody who read Green able to shed light on this?

Sorry for the double comment but Vox just made an interesting parallel between gargs and firemen. Firemen used to wear the big red uniforms and such but these days they have to wear more gear that's all black and yellow and face masks. They look like monsters coming at you during a fire so a lot of the time, someone seeing them would be scared and want to run at first. That's kind of what happens to gargs because they want to help people the same as firemen but people still freak when they see them. Just like kids have to be educated to not panic when they see a fireman, people have to be educated and learn that gargs aren't monsters.
When Vox was a kid they brought a fireman in, dressed in full gear so the kids would know and, hopefully, not be freaked. That's part of what inspired this idea.

Kythera - Thank you for putting it clearer than I did. The tattoo was only for 6 and we ended up with 8 as people invited themselves as it was. I know Andrea isn't giving up the scan of it, and none of us really want her to.

Ethan - Sometimes they are friendly to information about other conventions, sometimes no. Make sure you know the boards guidelines and if there's nothing banning it... I'd give it a try! If you found a place where the interests are similar, then by all means, BRING IT UP! I have a couple tattoo ideas. I jokingly told my brother that I think the image of Demona on the t-shirt I was wearing last Friday, with the background cropped out, would look good on the back or shoulder (especially if one leaves the grooves in, which would make it look like she's scratching your back), even though it would probably cost a lot for someone competent to do it (since I also chatted with someone at the con who had a black and white tattoo, because her artist couldn't get the right shade of blue). Now I'm giving it serious thought. My brother already thinks I'm nuts (especially since I also told him how hot I think that image is). Sunday night after the Masquerade, he was drinking beers in our hotel room. I checked on him at about 9:30, and I told him: "Dude, come hang out. This is great!" He came and hung out for about five minutes, and then went back to the room.

I'm still not entirely sure why he came. Well, I know WHY. Because he asked and I wasn't going to turn him away (one more conventioner). But I'm not sure what spurred the interest in the first place. Hopefully, he doesn't think I've joined a cult. But I'm sure he does. I think the second question at Blue Mug-A-Guest freaked him out. ( ;

Matt, funny thing is. You can stomp on my toe or stick a needle in my arm, and I won't care. But mouth pain....oh hell no. Watching that novicaine needle go into my mouth is worse than any horror movie. I've been dealing with the tooth pain pretty well, but there are times I just can't take it.

Con flyers>> Gathering flyers, at least for this round, are in the final stages of review and should be available very shortly (as in tonight/tomorrow morning). Been doped up on Loratab a lot from massive tooth aches...6 of them actually. 4 impacted wisdom teeth and two absesses over my two front teeth which now need root canals because my old dentist f***ed them up :(

Deffinetly. It won't be done in one shot though. The outline will have to be done first and the outline will take 1-2 sessions. The coloring may take up to 4 session I was told. But I have a high pain tolerance, so I am aiming for 2 sessions. Do the boning on one session and the wing membrane on the other. Its gonna cost $100s but my tax refund should do it.

I don't think waking from stone sleep is painful. Pain is a signal which usually means something is being damaged, and it serves mostly to warn the animal that something is wrong. It seems unlikely to me that gargates would not evolve some way to wake up without causing even minimal damage. And since they have to wake up and it is involuntary, pain wouldn't serve much point.

But I could be wrong. Does anybody know of an animal that routinely (like, everyday) goes through an involuntary and necessary, but painful, biological process?

KingCobra-- I think what Jen is trying to say politely is that Andrea did that specific design FOR THAT GROUP, FOR THAT OCCASION, and I get the feeling that they are disinclined to want anyone else horning their way in to the Fellowship of the Phoenix Gate Tattoo of Gathering 2007.

That's not to say you're not allowed to get your own Phoenix Gate tattoo, but theirs commemorates a specific, special event and by wanting to copy theirs, you are effectively cheapening their experience and the significance of *their* tattoos, as designed by Andrea. It would behoove you greatly to bring in a screenshot, or comission someone to do a unique design just for you.

@Siren- If no one can remember which videos won which honors, Nikki said she's putting together an awards site that would list everything (and possibly have a way for those who didn't attend the con to either watch the winning videos themselves or contact the creators for a viewing link, etc). She said it'd take about a week, given she's still got to settle accounts/taxes/etc.

If I were a betting woman, I'd say your Cell Block Tango won something; it was sure to be a real crowd pleaser. Ambitious editing, funny, you said yourself it was won of the best videos you'd made, right?

Well, we'll find out soon enough (if the internet fails to produce, you'll get an award ribbon mailed to your house eventually). But if anyone can remember any of the other video awards/videos they liked, I know the editors who didn't get to go would appreciate it.

Since we're talking about the ink I suppose it's worth plugging the shop that did the job. It's Southern Draw Tattoo and they have a couple shops in Tennessee. We went to the one in Pigeon Forge which was located across the street from the hotel where the con was taking place. The artist who did all our tattoos is named Phil (I don't see him listed on the website's staff page). The shop was very clean and the guys there were very cool. Phil said that he had never before done the same tattoo for this many people.

I found out about the group getting tattoos a little after the fact (I knew Jen was getting one). I was tempted/jealous, but I don't think I need another one just yet.

Any decent tattoo artist should be able to copy whatever design you bring in. They make a stencil of it, and go from there.

As for the recovery process. I got mine on Sunday, along with Jen, Gore and the rest. You wash it with soap and water once a day, and you put ointment on it three times a day for a week or so. Mine is peeling now, but don't pick it at.

As far as the eye-glowing thing is concerned: I'm wondering if getting out of stone sleep at dusk is painful at all. There might be some adrenalin going through their system at the time, since it looks like the eyes glow for a moment when they break out of the stone skin. Unless they're like me, and hate waking up.

It could be a hormonal shift with a 10-year wait after egg laying, but it's probably the sensory cues of hatching eggs that induce lactation. I'd guess that it's a combination of hearing and scent more than sight, since scent produces strong responses in most creatures (including humans) and other egg layers respond strongly to the sounds the babies make as they hatch (in some cases inducing the only parenting behavior a species exhibits).

Spoonvonstop> Something like this came up before, and Greg has only said that Avalon provided everything the clan there needed; he's being quite mysterious on this point. So, somehow, the baby gargs were fed, and got diapers and clothes and stuff.

Gargoyles are fertile periodically, in tune with the cycles of the Earth, so it is possible that their milk production is the same way. But they could also be hormonally stimulated by the sight of the eggs hatching together. Any female of the appropriate age to have laid an egg (or as a biological effects triggered 10 years ago by laying an egg) would be susceptible to be influenced by seeing all the eggs hatch. I imagine that just as at the intervals when they conceive eggs in the fall, that hormones are surging within them. In this case they would lead to parenting instinct, extra protecting instinct, and lactation. Possibly the hatching eggs also emit a smell that acts along with the sight of them hatching.

Women who have never been pregnant are sometimes able to induce enough lactation to breastfeed. This is called "induced lactation". A woman who has breastfed before and re-starts is said to "relactate". If the nipples are consistently stimulated by a breast pump or actual suckling, the breasts will eventually begin to produce enough milk to begin feeding a baby. Once established, lactation adjusts to demand. This is how some adoptive mothers, usually beginning with a supplemental nursing system or some other form of supplementation, can breastfeed. There is thought to be little or no difference in milk composition whether lactation is induced or a result of pregnancy.

Purplegoldfish- That's quite a good question. I've heard (I don't have sources at the moment) that it's possible for a woman who hasn't just given birth, who has never even been pregnant, to begin to lactate if given enough stimulation.
I'm thinking that if gargoyles breast feed, as their anatomy suggest, that behavior must be triggered, not by giving birth, but by the hatching eggs. Any fertile female in the clan would then be eligable for mother duties when everyone hatches, as opposed to those who laid the eggs originally/recently. I'm not exactly sure what part of the hatching would stimulate this behavior, but that seems more practical and more in keeping with everyone being the eggs' parents.

Totally off topic stupid thing that came into my head:
Sooo, how does the gargoyle breast feeding thing work? In the gargoyles universe, I'd just call them the only extant successful non-insect, land-based luminescent creatures, since of course there'd need to have been plenty of not-so-successful ones behind them to support their development anyway. Right, that's along the lines I was thinking of. It's difficult to think of a mechanism for Gargoyles for many reasons, including the fact that (other than some insects) we only really have sea creatures creating bio-luminescence. But! that's better than nothing, eh?

Oops. Forgot this. The adenosine triphosphate(ATP) you mentioned is required for the luminescent reaction. It goes like this: luciferin + luciferase(enzyme) + ATP + O2 --> light (and a few other things). So fireflies don't use the system that I theorized for the gargoyles, where a separate ion is involved in starting the reaction. Not sure where the ATP fireflies use comes from, but a contracting muscle would use ATP, not supply it.

But nerves telling cells to release calcium ions to the photogenic organs in the gargoyles' eyes would be a viable alternative to a direct hormonal trigger.

It's not quite known how fireflies control their lights, though there are theories. One is that the firefly controls the flow of oxygen into the luminescent organ; another proposes neural control. @ Kth- I had a question about your theory- why would adrenaline be needed to release calcium ions? It's been years since I took biology, so this may be a stupid question: would it be possible for calcium ions to be stored and released without the go between of adrenaline but rather just with muscle contractions etc? I was reading up on fireflies- when a male firefly releases its luminescent chemicals, it also releases adenosine triphosphate, a chemical used for muscle contraction in animals. Then again, the comment was only briefly mentioned in a conclusion and, since my ISBN is not at school right now, I can't access any online science magazine subscriptions to find evidence to back up that statement.

And this probably doesn't help at all, but I thought it was an example of weird things animals can do with thier eyes. Four species of Horned Lizards shoot blood out of their eyes when threatened.

Off current topic: I was reading Greek philosophy and i read that daimons (which is translated in our time as demon) had a different significance for the Greeks. For them a demon wasn't a creature of evil, but the messenger of the gods. An intermediary between gods and men.
The daimons were not immortal, but they weren't mortal either. Just another little coincidence between the true demons and Demona. She is not actually immortal, she just cannot stay death, which is slightly different.

I think I've seen a theory somewhere that hormones are involved in causing the eye-glow. Since in some bioluminescent creatures, a trigger (usually calcium ions) is involved, this is entirely probable.

It is possible that in gargoyles, adrenalin (or another emotion-related hormone) causes the release of ions to the luminescent cells, which incites the luciferin + photoprotein(O2 and catalyst) --> light reaction. The more ions released, the brighter the light, to the point where vision would be impaired if the luminescent cells were located in the retinal tissue.

This process does require new luciferin brought into the system either through diet or direct synthesis by the creature, though nobody seems to know how it's synthesized (they just know it is).

A couple of days ago, I was in a bookstore and noticed a new book on the shelves, a "1602" spin-off focusing on the Fantastic Four. I glanced inside it, and was amused to notice a scene where Shakespeare's working on the play "Macbeth" and arguing with somebody else about it; the argument involves the portrayal of Macbet in the play, with the indication that Shakespeare knows that Macbeth wasn't really a villainous tyrant but is going to wind up having to portray him that way so as not to offend James I. (The person whom he was talking to also advocates that he bring the Three Witches into the play.)

On the same page, it also showed the Thing dressing up like Falstaff, complete with a fake beard.

Well, I spoke up at the Banquet Q&A to point out the "eyeshine can't be the same because it is reflecting light, not the eyes actually glowing" bit when someone asked the question then. Whereupon Greg Weisman told everyone I'd have an answer to that by the next Gathering. So, um, I could use help in that, preferably in the form of being pointed to book names/authors or reputable websites dealing with things related to the topic, especially bio-luminescence or any commentary from people who know what they are talking about in this general subject matter. Sound rebuttals to previously aired theories would be nifty, too.

Those mirror-like cells don't emit light, only reflect it. And any optical system which focuses light in an image-forming way onto a reflective back-surface will effectively reflect that light back towards its source, and since it's directed in one general direction (at the light source) rather than in all directions, it appears brighter than a flat object (lambertian surface). That is why road signs (and some animals' eyes) are so easily-lit by headlights at night -- but it's probably not why Gargoyle eyes appear to glow; in fact we think they actually *do* glow, not just appear to. Actually, I think one of the Gathering specials on the DVDs shows a clip from a biology panel where they are discussing the eyeglow phenomenon. It would seem from that clip that there is general agreement that when the eye glow is the brightest, it severely interferes with their vision...

Now that I'm done with that on-topic ramble, I'll mention that I've posted my con journal (8 days of Gathering goodness and Smokies sightseeing) and go to sleep. Sleeeeeeep.

I'm no biologist and a stranger to the biology panel, but I found this tidbit on line.

"The distinctive "eyeshine" given off by wolves and raccoons and crocodiles, among many other species, comes from the "tapetum lucidum", a mirror-like layer of cells in or behind the retina. This structure is found mostly in nocturnal animals, for whom it serves as a kind of light amplifier. The retina captures some of the light that enters the eye, but some passes through. The tapetum lucidum bounces it back at the retina, giving the animal a second chance to "see" it."

So maybe the Gargoyles, being a nocturnal animal, could have a tapetum lucidum that collects or absorbs light, and then they can control when it emits light -- like when they are going through extreme emotion.

A question brought up at the con about what was the physical process behind gargoyle eyes glowing. Greg said he wasn't sure and that'd be something for the biology panel.

Lemme throw out my own thought on this. It's an adrenaline thing. The gargoyle gets excited, adrenaline enters the blood. That reacts with some other chemical in the eyes and produces a glowing effect.

Any ideas from the regulars who attend to the gargoyle biology panels?

Hello I just got back from my first Gathering and I had a really great time. Everyone I met was very friendly. I first learned about the gathering from the season 1 DVD I did not know it was going on for so long or I would have went sooner. I learned some good stuff in the panels I went to like drawing better as some interesting material to make tails out of. I got to meet Greg and he is a real cool guy I got to get my but kicked in air hockey and in laser tag by him and he even signed a Phoenix gate I made. The radio play was very entertaining and Thom was very funny in it. I did not know about the Gargoyles comic book until recently so now I need to get them all before the 5th one comes because I know what happens from the radio play and it is very awesome. I always love dressing up in costume and this just gives me another chance to by sides Halloween. I dressed up as the gray gargoyle Hal that had wings that can extend and I won best in show. I thought that was cool for being my first con. Now I will have to defend my title. I have already registered for The Gathering 08' in Chicago I just can't wait. Next year I will have to bring some extra cash so I can buy some of the great art that was there. Hopefully I can bring some of my own art as well.

I have no problem with the comics title, I just figured on bringing up the subject for the fun of it. Got back from the Gathering late last night!

I came, I saw, I got tattooed!

Had a blast this year, but then, I do every year. I was in this year's Radio Play, as Broadway. As everyone knows now, it was #3, #4, and #5 of the comic. Nah nah, I know what happens in #5 and you don't! ;)

Seriously, go buy it, and encourage others. #5 is going to be good. We can't talk about it, but all I'll say is that there were collective gasps from the audience.

At the con Greg mentioned that #5 was still at Disney waiting for final approval. He didn't expect there to be any problems with the approval given that they've already seen the script. However we won't get a release date until Disney approves the comic.

Odds are the comic will be released in the last week or two of July.

There is a couple of things I have noticed. According to what I can gather, slg released all their comics they scheduled for June except for Tron. I gathered this by looking through the blog/new releases rss feed.
Given that slg hasn't been bothering to update their new releases page to show exact dates for release of their comics, does anybody have an idea on where to go to find out when issue #5 gets released?

I've done some research on the egg-turning issue, and found more support for the need to turn gargoyle eggs. This is in addition to the information given at the Gathering, which stated that if left too long in one position, the embryo's pressure on a hard-shelled egg would cause the shell itself to bow outward and eventually crack.

Reptile eggs don't need to be turned because the shells are permeable to moisture; that is, that the egg absorbs water from outside to keep the baby inside from drying out and dying, and from sticking to the shell membrane. In fact, some reptiles secrete a sticky "glue" while laying to prevent the eggs from shifting around at all.

By contrast, bird eggs have hard shells that permit air into the egg, but aren't that good at moisture transfer. Thus, if a bird egg is not turned, the embryo settles to the "bottom" of the egg, the moisture between it and the inner membrane dries up, and it eventually sticks. At best, the resulting baby hatches deformed; at worst, the embryo can't finish developing properly and dies.

Gargoyle eggs being of the hard-shelled variety, I'd presume that the situation with them would be the same as for bird eggs, at least at night.

Harvester of Eyes - It was a double CD set done for the Dallas 1999 Gathering. They were songs that would be theme appropriate to the show, certain scenes or characters-mixed with bits of dialogue from the show. Several copies were auctioned off at the Gathering, but alot I just mailed to fans that wanted 'em(Ended up making about 100 copies). If you'd like a track listing, let me know

Now, I'm wondering how busy Greg would be between Gargoyles and The Spectacular Spider-Man (The new title for the cartoon). I'm home from the Gathering, and have had my first non-pancake breakfast since Friday! For everybody who didn't get to go, Pigeon Forge was kinda strange- sort of Vegas w/o all of the stuff that needs to "stay there". But my god the pancake places.....

Antiyonder- I definitely think it would be either of the first two, though Masque is certainly the leader of any of the options. It just sounds like a Gargoyles episode title, plus you'd get a nifty overarching thematic tie between everything.

Just a thought I was kicking around for the three parters we'll be getting. If #3-5 were to have been a single episode, then what would the title be? So far, some choices I guess would be Invitation Only, Masque, Bash or Double Date.

Gore-wow! didn't know anyone still hung on to those CDs. Nice to know there's one person still enjoying 'em - like part of me made it to the Gathering after all ^_^ One of these days maybe I'll get ambitious and put together another one. My audio skills have gotten considerably better since I did that first one. Although I wonder how many of the 100 copies of the original one are still kicking around or are in a landfill somewhere.

OK, so I haven't reviewed the comic yet like I planned. I still plan to do it, though.

Now my plan to wait and buy #5 and #6 together to save money may be difficult, if I'm surrounded by "OMG BEST ISSUE EVAR!" type posts when it comes out.

Just got back from the Gathering, and enjoyed myself immensely. I was very impressed and surprised with just how regular and down-to-earth Greg, Thom, and Karine are. Great people. I'll transcribe the journal as soon as I can. My cousin is getting married this weekend, so we're having extra houseguests for most of this week. Hopefully, by next week I can get that typed out (and hopefully the week after that, I can have all my pictures organized).

To Bishansky, Matt, DTaina, and Sadistic Cow: Sorry I didn't get a chance to chat with each of you as much as I wanted (we were all busy; I was off checking everything out myself), but it was great to finally meet you all. Hopefully, I'll see you again in 2008.

The sky is overcast here. To those who are doing the post-con thing in Tennessee, hope you're having better weather.

Well, SLG has yet to update their site and it's almost July. According to diamondcomics.com, Gargoyles #5 does NOT release next Wednesday. So if that's true, then we're down to the 11th, 18th and 25th. Come on 11th!

Looks like we can look forward to a fairly official Gathering 2008 YouTube promotion! Here's to it not getting deleted, and to an even larger attendance next year (go internet pimpage). I'm looking forward to reading everyone's Con journals over the next few days. Hopefully a few people went to see the Music Video Contest instead of mini-golf (though I can understand the allure)- I can't wait to find out what people thought of this year's submissions. I've watched a few online over the past months, and it feels like the quality of videos and editing has improved, even in just this year.

For those interested in entering the competition next year (assuming g2008 hosts it again!), I've been working on a detailed beginners' guide to using Windows Movie Maker.

Well, I had a great time at my best friend's wedding this past weekend. While Gargoyles #5 is making you tear up a bit, I almost teared up myself in my car on the way to his house. Maybe for fun I'll write up a journal for my weekend sans The Gathering.

I'll be working on my Gathering Journal later today, but I also want to say that those of you who couldn't make it really missed out on a lot of fun. The Radio Play of Issues 3, 4, and 5 was spectacular. Issue 5 is going to blow you away. It was worth the 11 years of waiting! I'm man enough to admit that during that one scene my eyes teared up a bit. Wonderful stuff, Greg really outdid himself. Seriously.

Unfortunatly we can't talk about anything for a few more weeks, sorry everyone.
