
It is entirely possible to obtain digital copies of ancient texts. I'm not 100% clear on the process but (if I remember and have time) I'll poke my head in the rare book room on campus and see what they have to say about it down there. I doubt it would have been technically feasible in 1994 and even if it was, once something has been digitized, it's that much harder to keep it out of the hands of others. There's something to be said for the security of having the only copy.
