Hello I just signed up for the gathering and I was wondering what time each of the events starts on? Like what time does everything commence on friday, June 27? Thus when should I get there. What time is the banquet, radio play, etc?

I've given this a lot of thought. Until I can see Jonny at a Gathering, and cut him open to determine once and for all that he's a replicant, I think he's just a troll. The best thing to do is pretend he doesn't exist.

WARNING: SSM SPOILERS

I have to say that I'm getting more and more impressed with this show. It's amusing, because the only other thing I know Alan Rachins from was as the voice of my least favorite villain from Batman: TAS (The Clock King. I liked The Nostradamus knock-off from the episode "Prophecy of Doom" more than Tempal Fugate). In this cartoon, he's perfect as Norman Osborn. We've really only seen a few scenes between him and his son, and they're always short, but the scenes convey perfectly what a demanding father Norman is, and how Peter Parker is probably the person he wishes his Harry were more like. It largely has to do with Rachins's delivery.

And now he's involved with the Big Man. I'm starting to get an idea on where Doctor Octopus might come from. But I also can't help but wonder if anything he creates might grow beyond his control. Men of power in most fictional universes enjoy following that trend.

Another solid episode with a lot of different threads running through it. We start getting to know J. Johna Jameson and he's a lot of fun, I especially liked the whole hyperactive 'perpetually ten minutes to deadline' attitude they gave him. Interestingly this incarnation of ole Jolly Jonah doesn't seem to be particularly Anti-Spidey, I don't know if they've completely dropped it or if they're going to incorporate it later.

Also returning are Flint Marko and Alex O'Hirn AKA the future Sandman and Rhino respectively. You know I'm just visualising a scene where Peter stumbles across Marko in the middle of a heist, lets off a quip to the effect of "come on Marko, how many times do I have to whoop your ass?" only to be smacked down by a giant sand hammer. O'Hirn's "ram him with a truck" move is a very Rhino-esque tactic, nice bit of foreshadowing.

When I first heard that Shocker wasn't going to be Herman Schultz I was a little weirded out but this episode erased all my doubts. Montana makes for a pretty charismatic villain with warped sense of honor. by the way, how weird is it to see the bad guy espousing the Moral of The Day(TM)?

We also meet Betty Brant and Robbie Robertson, I'd guessed that Randy from Peter's school was indeed his son but it's nice to have confirmation. big shout out to Phil LaMarr who managed to make father and son sound both reminiscent yet distinctive. Some nice interaction between Pete and Betty but is he trying to get the poor women tossed in jail.

Norman Osborn gets some nice development in this episode, teaming up with the Big Man to set up a sort of Supervillians'R'Us. That's what sets Osborn apart from Spidey's other rogues. Take away Vulture's wing and he's just a bitter old man. Take away Electro's lightning and he's just the school handyman. Take away Venom's symbiont and he's just a dweeb with a persecution complex. But take away Green Goblin's Glider and Pumpkin Bombs and he can still make your life a living hell as plain old Norman Osborn.

Why has the Big Man been recast so soon? I suppose it's better to do it now before Keith David was too established in the role. Can't wait for Spectacular to reach the UK.

On a more sane note: Happy Easter!

Weird thing about Jonny Modlin's latesy Ralph Wiggumism, is that it's not even a real question, he's just repeating information that Greg already knows. Has Modlin ever posted anything that isn't just a parroting of this same point. does he do this in real life?

Jonny Modlin writes...

Hi Greg,
If sales are good for the first two DVD sets of Gargoyles Season 1 and Season 2, Volume 1, Disney may release Gargoyles Season 2, Volume 2 on DVD that will contain the final 26 episodes with the uncut versions along with special features that I will get to complete the entire series of Gargoyles on DVD! I know that I am keeping my fingers crossed and waiting very patiently for Gargoyles Season 2, Volume 2 to get released on DVD. Thank you.

I liked the "clothes make the man" line by Shocker. It definitely reminded me of "Leader of the Pack". I wonder if Greg does it intentially or if the show is already writing itself so to speak. Then emotional ending the money made the episode for me.

Yeah, it is surprising about how many things in the comics we already knew about one way or another. Of course, there have been loads of surprises as well.

"Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" - Macbeth, "City of Stone"

I hadn't known about Keith David no longer voicing the Big Man; pity, since he did such a fine job (and his voice has so much presence).

I hadn't expected Greg to include the catacombs scene, but it's exactly the kind of thing that he would do. It's clear enough where Xanatos got his "I never waste anything" outlook from that he displayed in "Cloud Fathers".

Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

I like that Greg is taking the catacombs scene and re-incorporating it into the series. We no longer have Charles going down there, just his kids, but I think that makes it all the more scary. I've always found the whole Demona vs. Hunters in the catacombs thing to be very chilling and cool. I can't wait to read the dialogue.

Antiyonder here at the library again. Checked out "The Adventures Of Tin Tin Volume 1 and 4", "Buffy The Vampire Slayer Omnibus Volume 1-2" (I'll admit I haven't seen the show and could use some information on when to catch it) and Castle In The Sky (Anime).

Greg B> I was pretty sure myself on that. Just thought I'd double check.

Have to say that I agreed with Norman (like most did on this scene) about advising Harry on responsibility.

Antiyonder> I think the episode made Rand's identity as Robbie's son crystal clear.

*** SPECTACULAR SPOILERS ***

Another terrific episode. I really enjoyed Greg's take on the Shocker, and making him Montana really works in the context of the series. As I've said before, who's Herman Schultz? Who cares?

Lots of pipe laying here. Sandman and Rhino both, plus a lot of foreshadowing on where Norman Osborn is going.

The Big Man is no longer voiced by Keith David, unfortunately. Kevin Michael Richardson is a decent substitute, but I can't help but miss Keith. There's a certain quality to his voice work that Richardson can't quite capture.

Aunt May wants to introduce Peter the neighbor's niece, Mary Jane Watson. She has a "terrific personality". Naturally, Peter shudders.

"Don't go emo on me, bro."
- Eddie Brock to Peter. I'm guessing Eddie's seen "Spider-Man 3"

"Is that not the perfect visual image of life and death? A fish flapping on the carpet, and a fish not flapping on the carpet." - Bill AKA Snake Charmer

Greg's mentioned before that he intends to use characters from the comics for Spectacular Spider-Man rather than going with newly created ones. That said, given the mention of Robertson's son on today's episode, I'm guessing that one particular jock is Randy Robertson. Anyone else think so.

Hey all, tentative good news for #8 being released this week. I ordered #7 online from midtown back in December and ever since they've sent me a weekly newsletter with the upcoming week's new releases. #8 wasn't on it last week despite being listed on Diamond, but it IS on it this week. So that's something of a positive sign, although I would still be cautious. But still. Here's hoping!
Meg

In the Radio Play version of "Hunter's Moon Part Three", which I heard at the 2001 Gathering, Demona's battle with Charles Canmore was expanded. It started at Notre Dame, but wound up heading into the Catacombs, with the Canmore children following; Demona killed Charles in the Catacombs rather than at the cathedral.

* SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN SPOILERS *

Very good episode, with a lot of humor (especially J. Jonah Jameson's characterization - as well as poor Spidey having a tough time getting the garbage smell off him, and Peter's response towards Mary Jane having "a great personality"). I enjoyed its continuing portrayal of how Peter Parker runs into trouble because of his Spider-Man activities - now Harry's upset with him as well. And now we have an alliance between Norman Osborn and the Big Man - that certainly should lead into some great episodes.

Bad Guys Isuue #3 Preview> POTENTIAL FOR SPOILERS! BEWARE!

I'm pretty happy with how these pages are looking. The inking in particular is a lot bolder and more striking than in the first issue and I think it's going to help the comic "read" better as a black and white book. An lots of nice skulls as well, which isn't the easiest thing in the world to draw. I like the bit on page 10 with Jon hesitating in the doorway to the catacombs and Robyn apparently having to yell at him and then take his hand for him to go. It's a nice little indication of his character.

Stationess> I don't recall reading about any plans to show more of the death of the Canmores' father than what ended up in the final episode. I think this is just an original expansion on what we saw in the show, but I could be wrong.

Rambled on Mon, August 14, 2006
CHRONOLOGY REVISED

In the wake of completing the script to issue #3 of the comic book, I decided to take a careful look at my Gargoyles Timeline.

I wound up doing a whole new draft of the document. (It's now 249 pages long.) I actually incorporated some corrections suggested here at ASK GREG by folks like Aris and Matt and Todd and Kathy. Aris, as a few of you may recall, pointed out an error in my math, that shifted Angela's hatching back to 1058 from 1078 . So I fixed that.

Other things have changed as well. BUT NOTHING CANON HAS CHANGED, i.e. nothing has changed from the first 65 episodes of the T.V. series or the first issue of the comic (or the second or third either, frankly -- though you guys haven't seen them yet). Even "The Last" (Team Atlantis episode featuring Demona and on view at Gatherings) is still holding its own. And I didn't change anything just for the sake of changing things -- not even to surprise you despite the spoilers I've already given out.

But some things have changed. So old info currently in the Archives at Ask Greg may or may not be dead on accurate now. But I think the biggest change is that 1058 thing. So nothing too major, change-wise. Lots of new stuff added. Hopefully fun stuff.

Just thought I should let you know.

Phil - I disagree with some of the conclusions on that time travel story. Hitler's disappearance would not have negated computers. There's still the factor of the US Census Bureau. The Census Bureau would need advanced machines to keep track of the growing size of the US population. We needed the Cold War to get the internet, though. Guys, I'm confused about Greg's entry for This Day in Gargoyles Universe History. He states that the Avalon Clan hatched in 1058. But way back on March 4, 2002, Greg said that the Avalon clan was hatched in 1078 - http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=1687 . "Let this mark the beginning of a Golden Age! Between all our clans, both Human and Gargoyle!!!" - Macbeth, "City of Stone"

I was listening to one of a series of Shakespeare lectures on CD today (I'd gotten it for Christmas), about the role of Iago in "Othello". The lecturer, discussing the question over why Iago's engaged in all his scheming to convince Othello that Desdemona's unfaithful, mentions that in Shakespeare's sources, Iago lusts after Desdemona himself, though that aspect is either played down or omitted in the play. I immediately thought of the Coldtrio in "Gargoyles"; it looks as if Greg's gone back to "Othello"'s roots in his adaptation of it (which he's already done - in a different way - with "Macbeth").

Charisma> It isn't that uncommon for Disney TV cels to show up for sale from time to time. I have a cel and layout drawing I bought from Van Eaton Galleries a few years ago when they acquired a bunch of "Gargoyles" cels. My guess would be that these are authentic; I've seen that frame border on legitimate Disney cels before and it strikes me as rather unlikely that someone would go through the trouble of making that many fake cels for a show with a fan following that is not huge.
Demonskrye - [demonskrye(at)gmail(dot)com]

Charisma82 >> Sometimes art cels are sold at conventions, though not too often. Some cels would go for that much depending on what character is it, what pose they're in, etc. As for authenticity, you want to make sure you have a way of finding out if the authenticity is real. By that I mean you may have the certificate and the cel, but you also need to know if the certificate and the cel is real too. Just my thoughts...

By the way, this is The One Known As Mochi. I'm on a public computer and I can't save my info here...

Todd- lol, I had a dream about reading gargoyles #8 last night too. I remember thinking that Greg W. must have lost his mind lol.
Purplegoldfish - [Skydragonn at aol dot com]

I wasn't sure where else to ask this, so I'll post it here. I sometimes search through e-bay just to see what kind of Gargoyles stuff is being sold, and right now there's a boat load of production art cels from the show up for the buying. I was wondering how, whoever is selling these, got them in the first place. And I've also wondered if it is worth the money the buyer is asking for, to get the cels. I think most are going for about $200 or more. It comes with a certificate of authenticity, so I'd hope that they are the real deal. Does anyone else here know about all this & what's your thoughts?

First of all, sorry about the bad spelling.
Second, Macbeth said that anyone, including Xanatos could try to take the stone. So that means Macbeth is expecting trouble.

Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Adam> It's Macbeth. Not McBeth.

And what's this about tactics? For all they know, they're just helping to escort the Stone. Macbeth suggested the idea that others would try to grab it.

Also, Brooklyn, Angela and Broadway elected to stay home.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this and I may not be exactly right because I don't have it right in front of me, but I noticed a minor mistake in Gargoyles #7. In one of the first pages, Goliath said that Brooklyn would lead Broadway, Angela, and Lexington to help McBeth. However, when we see Owen looking in on them and talking to Xanatos, he says something to the effect of "that's right, McBeth, Hudson, Angela, Broadway and Lexington". I don't know if those are the exact words, but Hudson is included in the list of Gargoyles going to Britian.
Also, in my opinion, from a tacticle standpoint, I would have sent Broadway and Angela to Britian with Hudson because that would give them better numbers to deal with anything and it still have left Lex and Brooklyn in Manhattan to patrol the city.

Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Greg B> "I'd hardly call Ultron and Kang B-List villains. If I had to list Marvel's A-List villains, it would include:

Dr. Doom; Magneto; The Red Skull; The Green Goblin; Ultron; Kang the Conqueror; Thanos; Dr. Octopus; Mephisto; The Kingpin; The Mandarin; and as much as I personally can't stand him, Venom"

I agree that this was true back when Marvel was primarily in the business of comics, in recent years however it seems to me that for Marvel's current regime, "A list" seems to equate to "has featured in big summer blockbuster". I'm guilty of this my self, my own litmus test of a comic characters A-List status seems to depend on how well known they are to the general non comic reading public, or how much exposure they've gotten in other media. Over the years Doom, Osborn and Magneto have featured heavily in various animated series and big budget movies. Ultron and Kang by contrast have one rather crappy animated series and a cameo in "X-Men Evolution" between them.

That said, in terms of complexity of character, classic story lines and villains badassitude they are easily on par with guys like Green Goblin or Magneto IMHO. Alas a character popularity sometimes has little to do with how well written they are, otherwise Gargoyles would be one of the most popular TV shows of all time. To be fair though I don't really mind that Kang and Ultron aren't the most popular characters, just means they don't get rammed down are throats constantly so when they do show up it's generally because somebody's got a good story for them.

But if your still not convinced just ask your self this, how do you think Joe Quesada would have reacted if Bendis had came to him asking to turn Norman Osborn into a "hawt naked chick"?

P.S. I'm sorry to hear about A.C. Clark, he was one of the best Sci-fi writers of all time.

I had a weird Gargoyles-related dream last night. I dreamed that I was reading "Gargoyles" #8, and that it was about Thailog trying to capture a baby (who wasn't Alex, but was somehow linked to him) that had been brought into the present-day by the Phoenix Gate, with the clan opposing him. Then I thought, when I'd finished it, how odd (and disappointing) it was that there hadn't been any advancement of the Stone of Destiny elements from #7 (including Shari's recounting of the Stone's past history after it arrived in Ireland), and wondered if it would have to be compressed into #9, before I woke up and realized it had only been a dream.

I sequence the MIDI files, book the gigs, act as a chauffeur, set up and tear down the equipment, maintain the web site, answer his e-mails, keep track of what songs he does, and various other odds and ends. In general, I do everything except get up on stage and sing.

Algernon, Greg B. & Patrick : Criminal? I personally always classified it as more of a legal grey area. Anyway, even if I were to press charges, I highly doubt that he would be convicted. My boss is a disabled Vietnam vet. He's highly respected around here. I, on the other hand, look and sound like a slimy, overgrown weasel. It would look like I'm trying to screw over an American hero. Unless I had an *extremely* good lawyer, I'd have no chance. And I most certainly can't afford a really good lawyer. And if I lose, all it would take is one phone call from my now-ex-boss to all but insure that I would never be able to hold a steady job again. An even if I win, I'd still be perceived as the guy who back-stabbed his boss. Not a good thing to have on your resume. So my only real chance afterwards would be to move. And I'm simply getting to old to start over.

And anyway, there's also the fact that I actually *like* my job. In what other job can you be a typist/receptionist one minute, a salesman the next, and then a chauffeur? And that variety appeals to me. I can't stand being a specialist. That's the main reason why none of my other jobs have ever worked out. This one allows me to be the general everyman I was born to be. There's also the fact of being the sole employee. In most jobs I'd be easily replaceable. Here, I'm *essential*. The show, quite literally, could not go on if I were to quit. And that's precisely why I won't. I like being necessary. Even if I don't usually get credit for it. And I do get some side benefits for this job. For one thing, the very fact that I can post all this right now is because my boss pays for my Internet access directly (Mainly because I couldn't maintain his web site otherwise.) So if it weren't for him, I'd have left this fandom two years ago (Which probably gives you all an added reason to dislike him). He also gives me a bonus if I'm a bit short on my mortgage payment. And I get to dance for free. :) So overall, for me anyway, an annoying boss and a lack of vacations is a small price to pay. I don't even ask for vacations very often. The only other time I can think of was in '97 for my sister's wedding. (I was allowed that weekend off, by the way.)

Rebel : Quite right about me having this job a long time. It'll be 13 years this May. And yes, I am a 'he'. (If I were a 'she', there would be a much simpler solution for my boss problems :)

Antiyonder> I've just checked out Sony's Spidey site and I must say that is an interesting development. I'm still not certain how I feel about it, re-imagining a character for adaptation is one thing but giving Shocker a complete identectomy seems pretty radical to me. I must confess an irrational love for some of Marvel's B-list villains, I'll take Ultron and Kang the Conqueror over Magneto and Dr. Doom any day. Of course I'll have to wait and see the episode before passing judgement, in my experience the only real difference between a good idea and a bad one is often simply a matter of execution.

P.S. The new Shocker's design is pretty badass, which really says something seeing as how his costume is essentially a duvet.

Spen-you need to start looking for a new job ;p I know how tough it is trying to get into the working world--I'm working on it now in fact, so I could understand why you would want to stay. But if you have an abusive boss who makes you feel bad about yourself, no amount of money is worth that.

I tried to get my brother interested in the show way back when and the episode happened to be vendettas. Sigh. The whole time I was trying to defend it, but I think only part I liked was when Vinnie was walking away at the end he was whistling the gargoyles theme.

Algernon> I have no issue with "Monsters". I don't see it as particularly better or worse than most episodes. The two episodes that I do actively dislike are "Protection" - where I felt that I was figuring out what was going on well before the episode got there, which was rare for "Gargoyles", and "Vendettas" - where I felt that the idea of Hakon returning again was not given adequate time. There are some other episodes that I think are just OK, but those are the only two that I just don't enjoy.

Spen's Job > Guys, he's obviously been working there a long time, if he showed his boss an episode while Gargoyles was still on the air (at a time other than the middle of the night). I'm sure he would have already left his job if he thought that was the best thing to do. If he's the sole employee, it's not a good idea to piss his boss off by going on about labor laws. It's easy enough for us to give him advice since we don't know the full extent of his situation, but in real life things are never so simple.

Spen> I don't want to pry into your personal life cause I don't really know you or your situation, but you really should make a point of looking up labour laws or consulting a lawyer. Why do people ::looks at Antiyonder:: seem to be obsessed with why he doesn't like "Gargoyles"? He doesn't, and he doesn't really have to justify it. His behavior, and the way he treats an employee are more important than his opinion on a cartoon show. That requires justification since, as Patrick said, he's breaking labor laws.

Upon reflection, I shouldn't have posted that. This is a Gargoyles comment room, not "Spen's personal rant page". I have a diary for thing that. I apologize to the room for wasting space, and I shall not post anything similar in the future.

Greg B. : No actually, I am not technically allowed VT. Being the sole employee, he can't really afford to let me go for any amount of time. Therefore, it is in my contract that I only get vacations when my boss does. He doesn't like vacations, so that is quite rare.

Antiyonder : Yes. Most of it is my fault; back when the show was first on, about 80% of my conversations had something to do with Gargoyles. Naturally, that quickly became irritating to him. Eventually, we reached an agreement: "If I watch one episode of this show, you agree to never mention it again." I agreed, and mmediately suggested that he watch my tape of either "Awakening" or "City of Stone". To which, he replied "I don't want to waste two hours of my life in your living room." Instead, we would watch the new episode on Tuesday. Now, for the week before this, it seemed to me that we got one great episode one day, and a not-so-wonderful one the next. Monday's episode had been one of the latter, so I figured that we'd be getting a good ep on Tuesday. Wrong. The episode was "Monsters". Needless to say, he wasn't impressed. Worse, he went into a long rant afterwards about how it was a terrible show, and that I have no taste in
television, and that "From now on, if that minuscule pea pod that you call a brain conceives any sort of opinion about anything, you will keep it to your goddamn self!". For some reason, I was a little bitter towards that episode after that. But anyway, as you
can see, he's got a good reason to not like the show.

Happy Saint Patrick's day, everyone!

Mine hasn't been all that good I'm afraid. I finally asked my boss about taking a weekend off in June to attend the Gathering. Here's a transcript of that conversation:

My boss: What is your reason for wanting to slack off for a weekend?
Me: Well, sir, I was planning on attending a convention for a television show.
Boss: What show is it?
Me: ...Gargoyles, sir.
Boss: Forget it.

So I obviously will not be coming this year.

Now I've always wondered, do you think Bodhe change of heart was finally realizing that caving in to threats only lead to more trouble or that he was simpling siding with a blood relative.

Well, at least gargoyles #8 is scheduled to be released the same week as Tron #5.

On the other hand, that makes it close to not getting a new comic within 3 months. I don't want to bring up that argument about delays again. All of those seem like pretty good options. I tend to think Macbeth's or Renard's place are most likely...moreso Macbeth. With Renard, there's a slight risk because of his connection to Fox (if they left the castle, it would probably be because of a fallout with the Xanatoses, and I'm sure Fox might be at least somewhat familiar with Renard's security measures). While the Labyrinth clan and The Manhattan clan are allies, I don't think they'd be comfortable living in such close quarters for very long, especially since I doubt Goliath would want to take orders from Talon. However, I'm sure it would still do in a pinch (they all would, honestly).

If things get really dangerous in New York, they could always hightail it to Avalon for a little while. Though I doubt they'd be comfortable leaving their protectorate (and all their human friends) for long.

Rebel

I have a "in theory" question for the group. If the Manhattan clan were forced to leave castle Wyvern, where would they go? As I see it, they really only have three places to go: Halcyon Renard, Macbeth, or the Labyrinth.

Ah St. Paddy's day, what better way to celebrate the coming of Christianity to Ireland then by dyeing our hair green and getting sloshed outta our brains? Interesting revelation about Gruoch committing suicide, wonder if Macbeth knew?

DEMONSKRYE - Only for today. I'll be back to "bright blue" tomorrow.

In Shakespeare's "Macbeth", it's also suggested that Lady Macbeth committed suicide - though that obviously wouldn't have much bearing on the Gargoyles Universe. So I think that it might be a new revelation.

Odd that the St. Patrick's Day entry for "This Day in the Gargoyles Universe" would be about events in Scotland rather than Ireland - but then again, the Scots are descended from Irish colonists who settled in Scotland. (#8 and #9 of the comic book will probably get into that if they contain more flashbacks about the Stone of Destiny's history, since those same Irish colonists brought the Stone with them; that's how it got from Ireland to Scotland, according to the stories about it.)
