Hello......(Echo). I guess this will be the last post for the week considering how dead the CR is at the moment.

TODD> "The panel from "Fables" got my attention; the Frog Prince, in his knighting speech, invokes not only King Arthur and Prester John, but a great lion. I wonder if that was an allusion (carefully handled to avoid copyright issues) to Aslan."

Totally thought the same thing when I saw that, "Great Lion on his stone" indeed.

Never make fun of 80s cartoons. 80s cartoons are no laughing matter. 80s cartoons are more serious then AIDS.

Sorry for the double post, but if anyone here would like to read my "Prince Valiant Annotations", they're here:

Thanks for the link, Demonskrye. I enjoyed reading about the various Arthurian comics, most of which I'd heard of (I'm especially familiar with "Prince Valiant" - I bought the entire reprint by Fantagraphics, as well as a biography of Hal Foster, and even wrote a discussion of the various legendary and historical elements in it - not just the use of the Arthurian cycle, but of the background history, such as Attila the Hun, the Vandal sack of Rome, and St. Patrick, or the allusions to the stories of such writers as Rudyard Kipling and Lord Dunsany).

The panel from "Fables" got my attention; the Frog Prince, in his knighting speech, invokes not only King Arthur and Prester John, but a great lion. I wonder if that was an allusion (carefully handled to avoid copyright issues) to Aslan.

According to Toon Zone, the upcoming Batman The Brave and The Bold episode is the one written by Greg W. It's coming on at 7:30 PM tonight (soon from where I live), but if you miss it, it's on again Saturday at 8:30 PM. Info on the episode:

Sorry for multiposting but I am watching the 'bronx tale' episode of goliath chronicles and had an on topic question. Did Frank Welker voice this episode? Somehow the voice work in this bronx heavy episode does not seem right. Not the same quality as older episodes.

Taken from the JD-Wiki:

"In Freehold, New Jersey, in 2007, a woman supposedly saw a huge creature with bat-like wings near her home. In August of the same year, a young man driving home near the border of Mount Laurel and Moorestown, New Jersey reported a similar sighting. He claimed that he spotted a "a creature resembling a gargoyle with enormous bat-like wings" perched in some trees near the road."

Now, what does THAT quote indicate...? ;)

I agree with Rebel on EVERYTHING she says!!

I apologize to anyone who feels that this was an inappropriate forum to post my .torrent link. I feel the need to defend my action.

The files I posted did not orignate with me but with someone else who posted a COMPLETE gargoyles episode torrent. This and similar torrents were all I found in my breif search for these episodes which I wished to watch again.(some for the first time to my incredulous delight!)

I personally already own both of the published dvd sets and intend to buy the third immediately upon its (hopefully) eventual release. I only wanted the files that currently are going unpublished, and largely unaired. I downloaded JUST these files and announced my own torrent file called Season 2 Volume 2 along with a comment pleading for downloaders to purchase the 2 existing dvds.

Someone encoding Gargoyles episodes aired freely on television and sharing them with others does not offend me morally or ethically. Nor do my own actions; downloading an enjoying the files, sharing them with others, and inviting a known fanbase(this forum) to share and enjoy them with me, give me pause.

That said, a forum is a public space, and I sensed a tone of disapproval in the posts after my link. I understand that because of this sites direct affiliation with Greg that linking here might have been inappropriate. I apologize for this and nothing else.

Todd> Does your book have El Chupacabra in it? What's your opinion on it? Real or not real? I don't think it is because I know somebody who has goats and he would have said something by now if they were dying mysteriously.
Kendal E. Renfro - [kendal dot renfro at yahoo dot com]

I looked up the Jersey Devil in a couple of books I have on mythical creatures in North America; nearly all the stories about it have it marauding at night, but one or two suggest (the description didn't make it clear) that it might occasionally come out by day.

The length of time between sightings (the Jersey Devil was apparently around in the early 19th century, when both Stephen Decatur and Joseph Bonaparte - Napoleon's brother - saw it, but later on showed up again in the 20th century) would certainly rule out its being a gargoyle unless it was Demona; the Jersey Devil was described as having red eyes, but other features (such as hooved feet and a head shaped like a mule's with horns) would rule out that identification.

Todd Jensen

Eric Lindberg - Thanks for the interview and the link! There was a lot of great, in-depth information.
Landon Thomas - [<- Gargoyles News Twitter Feed]

GREG B> Small clarification, there are no gargoyles living in the Pine Barrows in the present day. During the 18th an 19th centuries, who knows?

I that said the Jersey Devil is always described as a unique solitary creature and as we all know, gargoyles living in solitude are extreamly rare. Any Jersey Devil as gargoyle theory would have to account for this.

Another possibility is that the JD* is actually a Third Race halfling. Most legends tend to describe it as the offspring of a demon and mortal woman reminiscent of Merlin.

Algernon
"To Guy Fawkes, the only man to enter Parliament with honest intentions" - Greg Bishansky

The Jersey Devil just might have been Demona during her wanderings, but the pictures I've seen of it don't resemble her at all. It doesn't look much like Brooklyn, either, which rules out the possibility that he became its original during his TimeDancing. I'll have to look back over the stories about it to see if it was only seen at night or during the daytime as well; if the latter, that would definitely rule out its being a gargoyle.
Todd Jensen

ROBBY BARROWS> There are no gargoyles or clans in the Pine Barrens.

The current clans are:

* The London Clan - London, England
* The Ishimura Clan - Ishimura, Japan
* The Mayan Clan - ChacIxChel, Guatemala
* The Pukhan Clan - Pukhan, Korea
* The Xanadu Clan - Xanadu, China
* The Loch Ness Clan - Loch Ness, Scotland
* The New Olympian Clan - Mount Thanatos, New Olympus
* The Avalon Clan - Oberon's Palace, Avalon
* The Manhattan Clan - New York, U.S.A.
* The Labyrinth Clan - New York, U.S.A

Now, as for the Jersey Devil... I have no clue. But I think the chances of it being a gargoyle are very, very, slim

Greg Bishansky

In the Gargoyles Universe, could the Jersey Devil actually be a Gargoyle part of a Gargoyle Clan living in the Pine Barrens? Or could it actually be a demon in the Universe? What would your thoughts be?

TODD> "1. Driving the Romans off Hadrian's Wall at the beginning of the 5th century (with a mention that three hundred years earlier, they sold Hadrian the stone he needed to build the wall)."

That sounds like a McDuck alright. ;)

ROBBY> Last we heard, SLG was negotiating a deal with Disney to produce Gargoyles graphic novels. IF such a deal went through presumably, it wouldn't involve Marvel.

Algernon
"To Guy Fawkes, the only man to enter Parliament with honest intentions" - Greg Bishansky

I went down to Starclipper Comics today (the comic store where I bought the issues of "Gargoyles" when the comic book was still running), and bought a copy of "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" by Dan Rosa there. It's great reading (especially if you've read other Scrooge McDuck comics from Disney, or saw "Duck Tales"), but I think that the first chapter would especially appeal to "Gargoyles" fans. In it, the young Scrooge as a boy in Scotland learns about one of his ancestors, Sir Quackly McDuck, who fought for Macbeth in "the civil war of 1057"; Macbeth rewarded Sir Quackly with a chest full of treasure, but unfortunately, Sir Quackly, eager to keep it safe, while walling it up behind one of his castle walls, accidentally walled himself in with it (with the implication that, once he was trapped, Macbeth's enemies were able to overthrow him).

In an appendix to the first chapter, Rosa printed two pages of a history of the McDuck family he had originally planned for the story (but dropped after understanding that the story had to be specifically about Scrooge himself), including among their other deeds:

1. Driving the Romans off Hadrian's Wall at the beginning of the 5th century (with a mention that three hundred years earlier, they sold Hadrian the stone he needed to build the wall).

2. Almost being the first royal house of Scotland, but when the MacDuck almost crowned king made a speech about "Scotland's birth, forthwith, to include the girth of all earth north of the Firth of Forth", the Scottish lords thought that he had a lisp and decided upon Kenneth mac Alpin instead.

3. One of the McDucks helped King Malcolm II (the Maol Chalvim, son of Kenneth II, who had a cameo in "Avalon Part One"
and a larger role in Brooklyn's first Timedancer adventure
), carrying out espionage for him during a war with the English (with the remark that he "knew all the Angles").

4. When the Normans landed in England in 1066, the English under Harold Godwinson contacted another McDuck who had the patent on longbows; unfortunately, they failed to read the fine print in his bill of sale to learn that arrows cost extra, with fatal consequences at the Battle of Hastings.

Hi all. A while back, I mentioned that The Initiative Show, a pop culture podcast that I am involved with, was doing an interview with Greg Weisman about Gargoyles, the comics, and The Spectacular Spider-Man. Just wanted to spread the word that the episode is now available.

Look for The Initiative Show podcast on iTunes. The interview with Greg is in Part 2 of the episode "November Shot."

It will also be uploaded soon to www.theinitiativeshow.com

Additionally, you can check us out on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?tab=1#/pages/The-Initiative-Podcast/154540820096?ref=sgm

GREG B> True I'm sure Greg could handle Japanese Mythology with the proper respect. But like you said someone is always going to complain and big public image conscious corporations like Disney tend to give the whiners more credence then they're worth. Just look at all the controversy surrounding the "Frog Princess".
Algernon
"To Guy Fawkes, the only man to enter Parliament with honest intentions" - Greg Bishansky

ALGERNON> Well, it's doable. Greg would likely be respectful, he always has been.

Fans seemed to like his take on the Spear of Destiny and the Crown of Thorns in the Radio Play, and we both know that's tied to a deity with more political power than he should have.

I think I've only heard one complaint against many people who enjoyed it. So that's good.

No complaints would be preferable, but they're always going to be some stupid cry baby who takes offense at anything and everything.

Greg Bishansky

ROBBY> Interesting question, Incorporating the Kami into the Gargoyles universe might be a little tricky since they're an important part of the Shinto faith which is still the dominant religion in Japan. So there's a risk of generating some controversy there.

That said I'm sure Greg could do some great stuff with Japanese mythology as he's done with Norse, Egyptian and Arturian legends. The only time I think he fell down in adapting an existing mythology is in the "Hound of Ulster".

Of course being Irish, I've had the story of Cú Chulainn drilled into my head since pre-school. Irish mythology was probably not a priorty of the Californian school system while Greg was growing up.

An internet petition is rarely worth the paper it's printed on.

The best way to show Disney there's a demand for Season 2 Volume 2 is to buy Season 1 and Season 2 Volume 2.

And pirated torrents are completely counterproductive. Seeing that kind of stuff link-posted here makes me a sad panda. :/

Paul> I couldn't disagree with you more. The Captain did think that the gargoyles wouldn't follow the Vikings, but only because Demona agreed to do her best to make it that way. When Goliath and Hudson would've returned, they would overrule her and the whole clan would've gone to rescue the humans. Hakon was right to claim that leaving the gargoyles alive was a foolish chance, because they would've. Now, destroying the bulk of them certainly certainly gave them cause for vengeance, but to a gargoyle a bold and decisive attack on their protectorate may have been cause for revenge anyway. Remember that when the Clock Tower was destroyed and Angela injured, Goliath sought revenge ven though no gargoyle had died. And it is worth noting that even after Goliath suffered such a serious blow, he still was concerned about saving the humans. Had they not cared about the humans, Goliath would've followed Coldstone's advice and abandoned the Castle or followed Demona's advice and send the whole clan against the Vikings, but protecting his protectorate, including the humans that inhabit the Castle, was all too important.

Gargoyles may not always care about human politics, but in every way, according to gargoyle politics, Hakon declared war on the Wyvern Clan. Goliath went for revenge for the death of the clan and the sacking of his protectorate, but also to save the humans, who were a part of his protectorate as well.

And I find it ironic that you would use the Wyvern Clan as your example of gargoyles disinterest in human politics as they were heavily involved with human politics from the moment Hudson allied with Malcolm in 971 til the fall of Castle Wyvern and beyond. Demona and some remnants of the Wyvern Clan remained involved in human politics until 1057.

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"For science, which, as my associate Fang indicated, must move ever forward. Plus there's the money... and I do love the drama!" -Sevarius, 'Louse'

The Captain seemed fairly certain that the gargoyles would leave the vikings alone if the vikings left them and their castle alone, and it did seem like Goliath and the other survivors were primarily motivated by a desire to avenge the victims of the Wyvern Massacre, not to save Princess Katharine and the other prisoners. I'd say that you guys are right; gargoyles simply aren't interested in politics unless it directly affects them.
Paul - [nampahcfluap at yahoo dot com]

DEMONSKRYE - Neither do I. Macbeth, though, would probably have reason to take an interest, since the Stone of Destiny story in the comics implied that he still took an interest in Scotland's well-being (eager to see the Stone returned to Scotland).
I might add that I was delighted to find out about Macbeth's lasting loyalty to Scotland in that story (he fights on the Scottish side at Bannockburn and participates in the 1950 theft of the Stone from Westminster Abbey, as well as watching over the Stone in 1996), since it showed that he hadn't been completely consumed by his feud with Demona. He'd kept other things alive, such as love for his old homeland.
Todd Jensen

I'm honestly not sure how much of an attachment Goliath and the clan have to Scotland as a region/country. My impression is that tenth century gargoyles did not travel outside of their home protectorate all that often. Saying that this land was Scotland and that land was England and that land over there was something else may have struck them as just more of the human obsession with naming and limiting things and no concern of gargoyles. Despite his assertion that human problems eventually become gargoyle problems, I kind of doubt that Goliath is going to be particularly concerned with the various world governments until they start having a direct effect on the fate of his clan and his species.
Demonskrye - [<---"Half-Hour Commercials" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

I wonder how Goliath and his clan feel about Scotland (since their awakening in 1994) gradually becoming more autonomous, even getting its own Parliament in 1999. I think that Macbeth would be pleased with that development. As for Demona, she'd be entirely indifferent.
