when I came into the picture trying to find the series on dvd, I found one web-site saying that only the first season came out and half the second season, and that was years ago, so me not buying it now didn't affect their decision to not release the second half and the goliath cronicles, that was done years ago before it even crossed my mind. But it does make sence about that, it's a shame that disney won't release it because they won't make money, they should just release it because there are enough fans to at least make their money back, I thought disney was about family entertainment, not making money! silly disney.....although maybe I will buy it one day soon anyway just to have some of it, but it will sadden me to only see half the collection on my shelf

Back to the old Catch 22. People won't buy Season 2 Volume 1 until Volume 2 is also available. Disney won't release Volume 2 until enough people buy Volume 1. Of course, it's been so long at this point, who knows if they'd even release Volume 2 at all. I suspect we've missed the window.

That's precisely the reason why we didn't get more Gargoyles sets. Many fans were unwilling to buy Season 2 Volume 1 on the grounds that the rest of the season wasn't out.

Lack of sales for Season 2 Volume 1 convinced Disney that Season 2 Volume 2 would be a waste of money.

MICHELLE> I really have to second Greg on this one, I don't believe in pressuring fans to buy stuff they might not have the money for. But if you're actively looking for Garg merch to blow money on, the DVD's are a great place to start. The sound and picture quality alone is vastly superior to any of the youtube vids and the special features are fantastic. Plus, they're going pretty cheap on Amazon.

I attribute it to Demona being a horrible judge of character and letting her anger cloud her judgment.

Speaking of anger, I wonder if the link between Demona and Macbeth allows/forces them to feel each other's emotional pain as well as physical pain; if Macbeth was heartbroken (e.g. by Demona's desertion and betrayal), would Demona feel it? And would they feel each other's anger?

Macbeth and Demona were both angry at that time, Macbeth at Bodhe and Demona at Macbeth, so I think that would create a positive feedback loop that would cloud anyone's judgment.

#2 The episodes on YouTube are the cut up Toon Disney versions. The DVD's contain the uncut/uncensored versions of the episodes. Toon Disney really butchered the show.

Normally, I don't play the True Fan card, but in this case I feel I must. Please, buy the DVD's.

I think maybe he's asking WHY Demona allied with Canmore. Which, frankly, is a pretty good question. It would have made more sense to just disappear into the wilderness and let them wear each other down. Best I can figure is she wanted to do the most hurtful thing she could to Macbeth, but it was pretty stupid.

I am trying to find more than just the episode info. I want to find a webpage, or an online shop somewhere, that sell's all things gargoyles, does anyone know at least where to find some images? My fave character is hudson. I don't want to buy the DVD, I can find all the episodes on youtube, and the dvd's don't even sell past the first half of the second season, but somewhere to buy all things gargoyles u.e. coloring books, nick nacks....all sorts of things, I hope you will let me know soon!

Greg Weisman mentioned that one of the writers for "Young Justice" is Peter David (one of the free-lancers, like Jon Weisman). I wonder if this is the same Peter David who wrote "Knight Life", a fantasy novel about King Arthur re-awakening in the modern world and (since he realizes there's no way Elizabeth II is going to step down in his favor) running for Mayor of New York (as the first step to becoming President of the United States). (Arthur running for Mayor of New York in the Gargoyles Universe would make a fun spectacle, though I doubt we'd ever have seen it. I would have liked to see a mayoral race in New York in "Gargoyles", with the gargoyles as a major campaign issue, done properly - an arc over several stories, like Senator Kelly running for President in the first season of the FOX animated "X-Men" series, rather than the one-shot of "Ransom".)

IB: It's rare that we hear "TaleSpin." Most of the feedback about wanting more Disney Afternoon shows ask us about "Gummi Bears." All I can is that since "Darkwing Duck" did well we got "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers." If this book does well there are certainly many great options for Boom! to consider.

Putting aside our Gargoyles promotion to BOOM!, it doesn't make any sense that Gummi Bears would get more requests than TaleSpin. I'm not talking about show quality, just in the nostalgia zeitgeist, TaleSpin seems far more remembered than Gummi Bears.

So it sounds like Ian won't be the guy to bat for Gargoyles at BOOM. I can't blame him though since it's probably an age thing. I stopped watching TV cartoons as a kid around 1993. I would have listed those same shows as my favorites if I hadn't discovered Gargoyles in 2002.

IAN - Thanks for the mini-essay; I'd seen the "Same as it Never Was" episode and also thought it had some striking similarities to "Future Tense" (including the person from the present who's experiencing this future world - Goliath in "Gargoyles", Donatello in "TMNT" - being greeted by one of his former friends in anger with a tone of "If you hadn't gone away, this wouldn't have happened").

Your page also reminded me of my creativity demon (inspired by "Turtles Forever") of Goliath and his clan having an encounter with a group of silly, playful little gargoyles who stumbled into Manhattan through a crack between worlds and having to warn them that the Xanatos and Demona of this world are far more dangerous than the Xavier and Dakota they're used to dealing with (though the Stone of Destiny story with its two new London gargoyles has made that story less likely to be written now).

Ah, I see the source of the misunderstanding. You're not thinking of the seventeenth episode of the series, but the seventeenth episode of season 2--two very different things, and something you should try to make clear if you don't want readers to (logically) reach the wrong conclusion.

So yeah, the seventeenth (17th) episode of the series is, as Jurgan said, "Lighthouse at the Sea of Time". If we're explicitly dividing episodes by seasons, this would make it episode 2.04--the fourth episode of season 2. The episode you're referring to is "Upgrade", which is the seventeenth episode of season 2 (and thus commonly referred to as "episode 2.17") but not the seventeenth episode of the series. If we're listing all the episodes without regards to seasons it's actually episode thirty (30). Do you understand what I'm getting at? One needs to make clear how one is numbering the episodes, or else it's very easy to invite needless confusion.

Again, I don't think "episode 17" is the same one you mean. Perhaps they played in a different order in Italy- episode 17 actually was "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time." Click on my name if you want to see a list of all the episodes in the correct order (or copy http://gargoyles-fans.org/reviews/index.htm into your navigation bar).

As for what you said about Coyote: Keep in mind, Xanatos was manipulating the Pack through Coyote. He had specific plans for them. That means he'd tell them whatever he needed to in order to keep them doing what he wanted. Coyote knew that Hyena was very violent, so he promised her the chance to kill gargoyles in order to get her involved. Also, Coyote himself is more cruel than Xanatos. He was programmed to want revenge (why Xanatos programmed him that way, I don't know), so he might try to go further than Xanatos would have in getting his revenge.

Sorry to keep posting, but I want to make sure I'm clear. "Spilled milk" is an English idiom, and I'm not sure if you know it. It means that there's no reason to get upset when something bad happens, because it's too late to change it.. Basically, what I mean is that Xanatos didn't ever want to kill the gargoyles, but he wouldn't care if some of them died anyway. At this point, I think he's trying a bit harder to keep them out of the way of his schemes, but he's still being pretty callous about it. He probably figures they can handle anything he throws at them without much damage. Truth be told, if he did end up accidentally killing one of them, at this point he might feel a good bit of guilt over it. He did promise that the feud was over and he'd repay Goliath, and I don't think that's a promise he wants to break.

In Leader of the Pack, he wanted to test out the Coyote robot and see how the Pack would perform against the gargoyles with it at the head. More importantly, he wanted a prison break where Fox could act noble and heroic so that she could get an early parole. I think his feeling about the gargoyles was "they probably will survive, but if one or two of them dies... well, spilled milk." Basically, he didn't want to kill them outright, but he didn't really care if they died in the process of one of his plans.

I don't believe that he was in episode 17, but killing them was never a primary concern unless it served some purpose. The episodes I can comment on though:

Awakening: He needed to test the Steel Clan robots against actual gargoyles.

Cloud Father: He was setting Goliath and Angela up to die to lure Coyote The Trickster out of hiding. And to draw him out required a sincere attempt at killing them.

Xanatos was trying to obtain the Stone for himself and give a fake to the Illuminati, but after being told how pointless that was, he went ahead and gave the "original" to Fleur to take to the Illuminati.

The robots were all a distraction, a feint. A way to make Macbeth and Company feel like they accomplished something when in fact they did not. (No sense giving them a reason to investigate further.) Bringing Coldstone and Coldfire in amounts to the same thing. The transport was happening during the day. So X needed witnesses that his attack "failed". Did he have additional reasons for wanting our ColdCouple back in the picture? Well, is he Xanatos?

As for what those additional reasons are? Who knows. But I don't think it was to keep Lex and Hudson safe. Keep in mind, Coyote was ordered not to inflict unnecessary harm on them.

In fact, I believe as stated by others that his reasoning for summoning Coldstone and Coldfire to London was to ensure that they would help to keep Hudson and Lexington safe (as safe as possible anyway).

JURGAN - Actually, it's "Quarrymen", not "Quarreymen". There's no "e" between the "r" and the "y".

ALGERNON - Since Mina was cured of Dracula's infection of her immediately following his death, I think that Stoker really did see Dracula as dead (though I wouldn't be surprised if he *did* have a loophole to provide a possible sequel in mind, simply because it gets done so often).

Incidentally, I've mentioned this before, but does anyone here remember that "Real Ghostbusters" episode where the Ghostbusters met a friendly vampire (he drinks artificial blood) being hunted by a mad vampire-hunter named Van Heldun, descended from a long line of vampire hunters by that name who were the original of Van Helsing? I thought that the depiction of Van Heldun and his famiy seemed like almost a foreshadowing of the Canmore Hunters.

You mentioned Xanatos, I've see he is completely different ih the Goliath Chronicles (that serie DISAPPOINTED ME and I really Disney decide to release the comic books in the other countries, mine too Italy).
Xanatos become in the third serie a good guy, suddenly; but in the comic books he doesn't and I've read the comments of three weeks ago and some fans are agree between them Xanatos is hiding something, something not good expecially for the Manhattan clan.
I hope this question is not stupid, but is it probably we will see Xanatos tricks the gargoyles again, the feud in reality is not over right?

Sorry for the double post, but I really doubt Castaway has any knowledge of Thailog's being in the Illuminati (he might not even know Thailog exists). Keep in mind, Castaway is a lowly 36, just like Thailog and Xanatos. He clearly doesn't know much about the society's larger goals. They funded the Quarreymen, but they're not telling him much. Hacker told him that they want the destruction of all Gargoyles, but he told two contradictory stories to Xanatos and Matt, plus I doubt the Illuminati is into something so petty as outright destruction. Castaway is, for the most part, a pawn of the Illuminati, and he's being kept in the dark about a lot.

Incidentally, there's also the old question of why the Illuminati fund the Quarreymen if they don't really want the gargoyles destroyed. My answer has always been that they understand socio-economic forces. A new species introduced would obviously create a lot of fear, and some of that would manifest as violent hatred. Something like the Quarreymen was inevitable. By creating it themselves, they can channel all that hatred into an organization they control, and rein it in if it goes too far. Of course, such things often get out of hand- I'd like to see what happens if the fanatic Castaway tries to defy his masters.

K709: You don't need to keep apologizing for your English. It's a little shaky, but we all get the idea of what you're saying.

As for Shari, the overall fan consensus is that she's really Scheherazade, the narrator of 1,001 Nights, also known as The Arabian Nights. This is based on her fondness for telling Thailog stories every night, plus she's been specifically described as Arabic. She would have to be much older than she appears, but that would explain how she rose as high as rank #9 in the Illuminati. As for why she's with Thailog, that's rather simple: Thailog is a promising young talent in the Illuminati with a lot of potential, and she's there to keep an eye on him and make sure they know what he's up to.

Yes, maybe the version of Dracula in Gargoyles universe it can be:
1)a vampire like in Bram Stoker' s story
2)but much similar to the storical Dracula Vlad Tepes III.
We know already about Macbeth he is more similar to the storical Macbeth king of scotland than the literally version of Shakespeare.

And a question: why that girl named Shari decided to be Thailog assistant?
What is her real objectives?
Does Castaway know about Thailog's present in the Illuminati?

I clearly post more often when there's new material to discuss -- in this case, its for my recently acquired Mecha-Nation #1 (of 3 in this miniseries d: )

**MECHA-SPOILERS FOLLOW**

[SPOILER] The first issue starts In Media Res with First Wave fighting . . . well, our heroes with a to be decided team name. Team-themes aside, the Mecha-teens go by Stealth, Blast! Tank, Charge, and Fahrenheit. First Wave consists of Flood, Grunt, Crane, Velocity and Pulse. As you probably can tell, each individuals name relates to their particularly unique power (like Fahrenheit able to wield fire and Stealth being able to be camouflaged in his surroundings).

They're still shopping for team names mid-battle as a matter of fact (well, at least Blast! is), which rightly leads to some standard obligatory banter . . . which is SO a rule, according to Blast (his profile lists Dragonball and X-Men as favorites of his, I wonder and hope if he's seen Spectacular Spidey, hehe).

The battle ultimately cuts short and just as Charge calls it out being an entirely pointless battle, First Wave tells our new heroes that in fighting they've quite possibly just slipped their hand and gave away a major hint behind their non-Mecha-identities. Dun Dun Dun.

The story moves on to the next day with Kevin (Stealth), Marcus (Blast!), Zahra (Charge), Ray (Tank), and Fahrenheit (Susie) making their way to school, still somewhat shaken from last night's events. Determined not to out themselves as Mecha-Sapiens, they promise not to 'Metal-out' for any reason to varying successes. We're soon treated to a funny side effect when maintaining one's human form for too long ('the itches').

While the five try to hide in their metal shells, we get some fun social interactions at Glass Lake Senior High, where Susie is very much a popular and is never to be seen by the "freaks and geek." Zehra, a 'freak,' meanwhile has connections at the school she would prefer to ignore, given her (and her teammates) current troubles.

The rest of the issue has fun introductions with the science teacher (who's got a particularly annoying verbal tic) and the school principal, all the while with the blooming mysteries of who the First Wave folk are (and have we already seen them at school?) and what "The Factory" is (evidently First Wave's . . . let's say 'employers'). [/SPOILER]

Overall, a fun first issue that makes me want to see more very soon.

Kingdom Comics -- thanks for the info mage_cat and Landon, especially that timeline of articles . . . yeah, that's a ton of non-evidence, but it is nonetheless curious.

Dracula -- Not much to add, just that I like the topic, especially in thinking about the possible ways Greg might go about using Vlad the Impaler or Bram Stroker's novel (or probably even both) . . . because, yes: all things are true, few things are accurate, yadda yadda yadda d:

(AND to segue to an earlier discussion this week, I just finished reading the first issue of BOOM!s Darkwing Duck -- I do think I'll be reading more :D )

Not necessarily, early on in his exposition Van Helsing explains the that the only way to kill a vampire is by driving a wooden stake through their heart and then beheading them. That's the procedure used on Vampire Lucy and Drac's brides. Yet when it comes time to dispatch the count himself they decide to hack him up with a bowie knife, I like to think Stoker included that as a deliberate loophole in case he ever wanted to do a sequal.

But I hold with those who say that we don't know enough about what the Gargoyles Universe's take on Dracula would be like to engage in speculation on what he would do when he showed up. We don't know how Greg plans to interpret him, how accurate Stoker's novel is in the Gargoyles Universe (for all we know, everybody in it except Dracula was fictional in the Gargoyles Universe), whether the "Gargoyles" Dracula would be identified with Vlad the Impaler (though, after what Greg did with Macbeth, it seems plausible), etc.

Depending on how they're depicted in the Gargoyles Universe, vampires could make good foils for gargoyles. They're also mythical creatures, nocturnal by necessity (assuming that the Gargoyles Universe uses the "sunlight is fatal to vampires" notion), and if Greg plans to use the "vampires turn into bats" idea (a late development in the mythology, triggered by the discovery of vampire bats in South America), that would echo the batlike wings of Scottish gargoyles. At the same time, if vampires in the Gargoyles Universe are able to pose as human while secretly carrying out their hunts for human prey, they would make a good contrast to the gargoyles (the ones who look human-like far more monstrous on the inside than the beings who appear like monsters on the outside). It'd be tempting to imagine any vampires in town, if they play their cards right, making their encounters with Goliath and his clan look like those savage monsters attacking humans once again, rather than Goliath and his clan, as protectors, foiling the vampires in their attempt to drain the blood from their victims.

But until we get hard information, all of this has to be speculation.

But about a hypothetical alliance between Demona and Dracula... we'll see.
Greg Weisman is a good writer and if he will decide to create a version of Dracula in Gargoyles universe and make an alliance between him and Demona, I think he will find the right way.

I tend to think Demona is pretty much willing to ally with anyone if they have something to offer her. Hell she was willing to join forces with the freaking Hunter in City of Stone. That said I also think she only tends to ally with those who have something she needs but can't easily take by force.

Macbeth offered her fragile clan protection, Canmore offered her vengeance on Macbeth for a perceived betrayal and Xanatos offered her all the resources of a multinational company. Thing is, with the exception of Macbeth, she had every intention of betraying them all when it became convenient.

The only person Demona seems to have actually trusted since 1057 is Thailog and we all know how that turned out. Regardless of what Gargoyles Dracula is like, I can't see her allying with him for any longer then she did with Xanatos. Once he's of no further use to her, she'll turn on him.

At this point, the only being I can see Demona getting along with in the long term is Coldsteel. In fact, I'm pretty much expecting him to hook up with either her or Thailog. He seems to work well with other bad guys.

I think that an alliance between Demona and Dracula *could* be interesting, but ultimately, whether or not it's something I would want to see depends on what the Gargoyles Universe version of Dracula is like. Before I know whether I'd want to see a Dracula/Demona alliance, I need to know what Dracula's personality is like, what his goals are, etc. If his personality and goals complement Demona's, then I'll be happy to see a team-up between the two of them, but if his personality and goals don't mesh well with Demona's, then I probably won't be interested. The same applies when it comes to Thailog.

Team-ups can be really cool if the right characters work together. For instance, I thought the Archmage's team-up with the Weird Sisters was entertaining, and I also enjoyed Demona's team-up with Thailog. From the comics, I liked seeing Coldsteel and Coyote working together. Etc., etc., you get the idea.

At present, we don't even know what Greg Weisman's version of Dracula will be like, so that's why I'm not sure if I want a Demona/Dracula team up or a Dracula/Thailog team up.

But if *you* want one, well, I see nothing wrong with that. Good for you.

KO7P> Relax man, Harvester just misread what you posted, It's no biggie. As for the idea of Drac teaming up with Demona or Thailog, there's no real way to judge such an idea until we actually see it in a story.

Honestly, the more I think about the more I think the likeliest place for Drac to turn up is in Pendragon. He'd make a good thematic nemesis for Arthur, what with both of them being "Timeless Kings"*. Plus they've got similar motif's, both having adopted the dragon as their symbol.

Not to mention Drac's already got some prior history in London. I've actually done the math, turns out Old Pog would have been around the gargoyle equivalent of 50 when the novel took place.**

* Well technically "Timeless Prince" in Drac's case.

** I'm assuming the events of Bram Stoker's original novel took place in the Gargoyles Universe, though possibly not exactly the way Stoker chronicled it. All things are true, few are accurate.

I think there's limited value in debating the validity of possible scenario's someone would like to see. As ALgernon pointed out, it's hard to know what ideas would work well and what's just something a fan thinks would be cool without knowing how it might be executed. I can remember a lot of people back on the old AOL animation boards - myself included - getting very worried about what season two of Gargoyles was going to be like because we were getting information about some of the basic story points without any detail or context. Let's just say that when you hear "Sanctuary" summarized as "Demona and Macbeth get married," it sounds pretty ridiculous. And the reverse was true for TGC. We got episode summaries beforehand that sounded great, but the execution was so poor that the concepts were ruined.

I don't think it's necessary to conclude that someone wants to see an idea happen only because it would be "kewl" or that that's even necessarily a bad thing. Gargoyles works on a lot of levels and what appeals to one person about it isn't going to be the same as what appeals to another.

We've seen that Demona can form alliances, when necessary. But remember that she's even better at nursing grudges. I really don't think she'd ever turn to Thailog for an alliance after what he did to her.

"Last weekend at Wizard World Chicago, Christian Beranek gave a detailed overview of how his new Disney publishing division will re-imagine some of the corporation's aging properties."

So as of August 10, 2009, Christian Beranek is the head honcho of Kingdom Comics. I then found this series of unrelated biographical pieces on Beranek: http://blog.newsarama.com/category/features/christian-beraneks-life-of-high-adventure/ Look at his byline for February 12, 2010:

"Christian Beranek is a writer, producer, actor and musician. Currently he is in production on a project for Disney's Kingdom Comics..."

Now look at his byline for February 22 and 25:

"Christian Beranek is a writer, producer, actor and musician. Beranek is working with Disney on several projects..."

Then there's over a month delay until his next article on March 30:

"Christian Beranek is a writer, musician, actor, film/tv producer and webcomic entrepreneur. He co-runs The Webcomic Factory with Tony DiGerolamo and is hard at work on several original graphic novels..."

There's no further mention of Kingdom Comics or Disney. He also refers to himself as an entrepreneur for the first time and "original graphic novels" aren't in Kingdom's purview. No evidence of anything but it's interesting.

If I'm remembering correctly (never a certain thing) Kingdom Comics was supposed to be a new division of Disney. I can only guess that some time after the announcement was made, Disney changed it's mind about starting it, because all I ever remember seeing was news that they were starting it and a general mission statement, no specific titles or anything like that.

Just came back from my comic shop in Phoenix -- I was barely seconds through the door when the main comic store guy singled me out and told me that Mecha-Nation was coming in tomorrow -- before I had even asked if they had even bothered to order it (as I hadn't been in the store since June/July -- whenever Greg Weisman last announced that it was available for purchase online . . . or something like that).

And the last time I was in this shop it was to pick up my two Gargoyles trades . . . so THAT was July/August the previous year (and even that was a first visit in a while as a large chunk of my Gargoyles purchases have been in Los Angeles where I attended college for years) . . . so long story short, I love how this guy just remembers even the most sporadic customer that pops by as well as their typical purchase: This is how customer loyalty is made.

Oh yeah, I asked that they reserve a copy of a second printing of Darkwing Duck -- and from this shop, word is that every issue they had is currently sold out . . . and fast too. (oh, this was is my first visit at the shop where there was no Gargoyles merchandise anywhere *sigh*).

Tangent -- whatever happened to Kingdom comics? Didn't they have a deal with some Disney stuff? I was surprised looking through the BOOM! section of the shop to see anything Mouse related (whether it be classic Disney characters and Disney-PIXAR titles all with our onomatopoeic friends ;)

Dragon*Con -- Atlanta? Really? Wow -- props to the guys over there, I'm super jealous to whoever is able to attend this weekend.

I don't mean to pick on you, but I see a lot of ideas for team-ups that don't have any logical basis other than the sheer spectacle of it. Does this serve the characters, or are the characters being shoehorned into a concept because "Well, gee whiz, that would be kewl?"

Greg B: Your theory last week regarding Peredur is excellent and although I think you're mostly on target, I have to say...I hope you're wrong. If we do ever get an explanation, I want it to blow my mind, and I don't see that happening if it's basically the same development fan X suggested Y months ago*. It happened with the Spectacular Spider-Man series finale reveals, and while I don't wish for you to stop sharing your awesome theories, I do feel they're a double-edged sword.

* And yes, there is a large amount of ego involved in this--I don't like the idea of somebody figuring out a solution to a mistery before I do--so yeah, damn you for being smarter/more imaginative than me and all that. ;)

Greg has said that he plans to eventually bring in practically every fictional or mythological character, so long as it's in the public domain (i.e., no one else owns the rights- so don't expect, say, Lord of the Rings characters). Personally, while I like the mythology, I've never been comfortable with bringing in fictional characters with a clear author, as it seems to suggest no one ever had an original thought in the Gargoyles universe.

Landon: Thanks for the Mecha-Nation update. I've been eager for some Greg Weisman/Vic Cook/Greg Gular/Cheeks material all summer (I blame the lack of complete second season DVD of SpecSpidey . . . I reckon I'll just buy the last four volumes after a few more paychecks come in *sigh*), so I look forward to contacting my local comic shop again tomorrow. Further, thanks also for the comparison of Gargoyles to Darkwing Duck comic sales. Better context never hurts :)

Disney Adventures & BOOM: I've yet to read the Darkwing Duck series, but every mention of it has always made me excited. I do think I'll consider buying any issues I find when I pick up Mecha-Nation in the coming days as well as inquire about the comic's first trade paperback.

And there's this fun thought in the back of my head that if I start to love these Darkwing comics, I might finally save some money and consider getting the Darkwing Duck episodes currently available on DVD (I've been eyeing those sets for years).

Outside of Gargoyles and Aladdin, Darkwing Duck was my next favorite DA show, followed Rescue Rangers and then mostly likely a 4-way tie of Gummi Bears, TaleSpin, Duck Tales, and Bonkers (I remember that show making me laugh, I'd love to see it again).

Gummi Bears holds a distinction in my nostalgia as my first favorite show when I was in preschool (yes, I am that young/old -- depending on your own age, I guess) d:

It's a small world after all, but apparently not when it comes to Disney Afternoon fandoms. Why each fandom is so insular is anyone's guess. Not as much crossover interest as some would assume, perhaps. There are people who like all things Disney because it's Disney, and there are people who like or two shows and don't particularly care about the others.

If SLG had already borrowed money to pay legal expenses, chances are that it was not a question of not *wanting* to borrow money to renew licenses, it was an issue of being *unable* to because of credit lines being tapped out. Banks treat businesses no different than people in that regard.

The "Rescue Rangers" comic book as the first pick-up from the Disney Afternoon after "Darkwing Duck" seems all the more appropriate in light of one of the "Darkwing Duck" episodes, in which Darkwing was inadvertently transported to an alternate universe populated by humans where he was a fictional character - and it turned out that the television series was made by a guy who'd accidentally tapped into Darkwing's universe with some odd invention. Remember the ending, where Darkwing used the device to get home, thereby permanently preventing it from picking up anything more from his home-world, the producer was in despair - and then the device started picking up another group of characters, ending with the cry "Rescue Rangers, away!" It was funny even then, but now, after this piece of news, it seems to be taking on new significance....

My guess is that with superheroes becoming somewhat popular, Darkwing Duck was givening a chance due to being Disney's own super hero. Not to mention that the character is a parody of a comic book hero, and thus adapts well to this format.

Demonskrye - I'm not convinced that Gargoyles wasn't financially successful. You gave a simple profit argument but how do we know Gargoyles wasn't profitable? It costs money to make money and SLG's excuse for canceling the show was Disney raising the licensing fee. Plus there's the new revelation that SLG has been in a legal quagmire. Even if Gargoyles was profitable enough to pay for the new license fee, SLG would still have to spend the money upfront to cover costs. Regarding the legal fees, Dan Vado said "This is money we have already spent, a lot of it borrowed, for which there will be no return and is now affecting our ability to operate." If they've already borrowed a bunch of money, they might not want to borrow more to produce an expensive licensed comic.

Gargoyles could have been both profitable and financially successful in this scenario, yet still too expensive to produce for a small operation with new legal fees. Since Gargoyles exceeded DW in sales out of the gate and maintained high numbers after multiple delays, I don't think we have to convince BOOM! of anything.

Gargoyles Movie: I think if it ever happened that they made a comic without Greg, it would swiftly become apparent that almost the entire readership is against it. It's not so much that it couldn't happen, but that the bad press of trying it would so utterly overwhelm any potential benefit that it would be a complete non-starter. Now the movie could change that equation by making a separate fanbase for 'Fauxgoyles'. Until that grisly day...

Greg B: Usually, but not always. There's the example of 'Buffy Season 8' where Joss Whedon is the "executive producer" but doesn't write every issue. And, hey, I'm an open-minded person... come the day when Greg's busy working on a new season of '2198' and needs to bring in the show's old writers to guest write arcs on the 'Gargoyles', 'Bad Guys', 'Pendragon', 'Timedancer', 'New Olympians', 'Dark Ages' and 'Heroes of Ulster' monthlies... well, that's okay with me. Until that gleeful day...

Demonskrye: You're probably right about 'Aladdin'. Which leaves:

- 'Gargoyles' -- a track record of sales and I can't believe they would have teased for if it wasn't in with a major shot.
- 'Talespin' -- surely a no-brainer, since it's part of the 'heartland' of Disney afternoon shows with 'Ducktales' and 'Rescue Rangers'?
- 'Goof Troop' -- they don't currently have a Goofy book so it may be tempting for that reason.
- 'Gummi Bears' -- this would make a terrific series but I'm not sure how much pull it would get -- always seemed to get overlooked.
- 'Bonkers' -- did 'Bonkers' ever really get the traction of other series? I'm not sure it would especially suit an ongoing anyway.

Even if he didn't write every script, his finger prints were still all over them. It was his baby. Michael Reaves even said this at two of the Gatherings.

Comic books are different. Theoretically, you're producing one issue a month, it's not like say, producing fifty-two episodes in less than ten months.

I hadn't thought of Aladdin probably because it's directly based on a movie and might be thought of as a movie license rather than a TV show license. Disney's current strategy seems to be dividing up their various licenses among many publishing companies (and there's no news yet to suggest how the purchase of Marvel is going to effect this), so Aladdin and other non-Pixar animated movie licenses may be off the table. Or not. We'll see,

Rebel> It would be pretty tough for me to support a Gargoyles comic that didn't involve Greg in some way. I could deal with him taking on a "story editor" role, where he would decide on the basic ideas for each issue and story arc and supervise other writers who did the actual writing, since that's pretty much how a new Gargoyles TV series would be made. But Greg's involvement is the one clear line between what is canon and what is not. It would be a bit of a tough call, since I do want to support new Gargoyles product and the failure of such a comic could easily be deemed a failure of the property rather than a failure of the property without Greg. But I'm not going to pay for something I don't think I'll enjoy in the hopes that it will lead to something I will.

I'd read a non-Greg Gargoyles series if Greg was the story editor and picked the writer himself. I think the sentiment of "ONLY Greg can write Gargoyles!" was already proven wrong with the animated series. If we had, theoretically, a successful Gargoyles comic series with plenty of consistent releases, I'd love to read a storyline written by Reaves or Bates. However, Greg's the only guy that can properly steer the ship.

But yeah, if Greg had nothing to do with it, I'd probably still buy it. To raise everyone's optimism: Ian Brill, James Silvani and Tad Stones all signed at BOOM!'s Comic-Con booth. So they must have had Stones' blessing at some point.

Question for the room--how would you feel if BOOM! put out a Gargoyles comic, but *didn't* ask Greg to write it? On the one hand, I'd feel compelled to buy it to support the property and help show Disney that there is still a sizable audience for Gargoyles, but on the other hand...without Greg, it's just not Gargoyles, is it? I do wonder how the licenses work. Why is it that BOOM! seem to be able to make a success on numbers that SLG couldn't make sustainable? There seem to be a couple of big differences:

1. BOOM! is plain doing more books, so if the licence fee is fixed for a period (which Gargs' was iirc?) then they're obviously getting more bang for their buck .

2. I wonder if plain economies of scale play a part. SLG had four titles in 2006 and all of them dropped away one by one. Going back in for one book (and spin-off) just wasn't viable.

Of course, this is just guess-work.

It's especially sad when you consider that all four of these properties are now major motion picture prospects for Disney: 'Wonderland' and 'Tron' this year, 'Haunted Mansion' by Del Toro and now some form of 'Gargoyles' film.

Demonskrye: Sorry to hear you've been sick; I hope you feel better soon.

Algernon: 'Aladdin' is probably worth a punt too. 'Aladdin', 'Talespin' and 'Gummi Bears'... All sublime concepts with vast untapped potential.

In terms of the choice of what follows up 'Darkwing', it probably wasn't a coincidence that it's the same writer as 'Darkwing'. It may just have been that they offered him his choice of property to develop next.

One thing that I hope Boom realizes is that, even though Gargoyles' sales were good, its sales would likely have been GREAT if it hadn't been fraught with so many delays. I'm not sure what was the reason behind those delays--I know it wasn't Greg's fault, but was it because of SLG or the artists? Possibly a mix of both.

I currently read the Farscape titles that BOOM! puts out, and they come out like clockwork. I really hate to criticize SLG since I know they took a chance on Gargoyles and I appreciate that. But I would love it if Gargoyles could have been with a company like BOOM! to begin with. A thriving company, with a reliable artist, and with Greg doing the writing...? We'd have an awesome new Gargoyles story EVERY MONTH with few, if *any* delays. For Gargoyles fans, it'd be a dream come true, and the sales would be rock solid.

Another factor I hope they consider is that, even though Gargoyles sold well, it would probably sell even better with a 2nd or 3rd tier comic book company like BOOM! than a lower-tiered company like SLG. Many comic book stores with limited shelf space don't even order books from small companies unless someone requests an issue, and even if that happens, they might order just enough for the people who have expressed an interest without bothering to order any to stock on the shelves. Companies like Marvel and DC hog a lot of shelf space in comic book stores, but BOOM!'s definitely got some clout of its own so I think a Gargoyles series from BOOM! is more likely to get shelf space (and thus drawn in casual fans) than a Gargoyles series from SLG.

DEMONSKRYE> Personally I still think this Rescue Rangers announcement is a good sign. As has been established, RR still has a viable fanbase and a good writer working on the book so it still has a good chance of being a success.

And if BOOM do decide to expand their Disney Afternoon line then I think Gargoyles would be one of the first properties they'd look at. They've already done Ducktales, Darkwing Duck and Rescue Rangers, like you said our only real competition at this point are TailSpin and Gummi Bears.

What we do know is that BOOM! puts out a lot more Disney product than SLG ever did, so they're not really comparable.

Since I was busy throwing up while the Rescue Rangers comic was being announced (not a knock against Rescue Rangers; I really was sick all of yesterday), here's my two cents:

If what BOOM wants to do now is expand on the success of the Darkwing Duck comic, Rescue Rangers might have seemed like a more obvious choice than Gargoyles for the next Disney Afternoon series to make into a comic. They're more in the same adventure-comedy vein. And Rescue Rangers features recognizable Disney characters, which is often seen as an asset.

"What makes sense for us to pursue" could work in the favor of Gargoyles. I BOOM doesn't want to flood the market with a bunch of really similar Disney Afternoon titles, Gargoyles might make sense as their next pick. It's still a Disney Afternoon property and can be advertised as such, but it's more drama than comedy, so it won't feel like just more of the same.

I think the biggest thing working against BOOM publishing Gargoyles is that Gargoyles was a comic recently and wasn't financially successful. (At least, not successful enough for SLG to continue publishing it.) Hopefully, BOOM will realize that a number of factors that weren't a lack of interest in the property contributed to the SLG comic failing to be profitable. Actually conveying that information to BOOM strikes me as a difficult task. We would want to make BOOM understand what the SLG comic was up against without making them think that they will be facing similar hurdles if they decide to publish a Gargoyles comic or that the SLG comic and fans' desire to see all new material that picks up where the SLG stories left ff will be yet another headache to contend with.

I seem to remember someone telling me that the Rescue Rangers fandom was getting similarly cryptic but encouraging tweets from BOOM to those that the Twitter Demona was receiving. So that could be a hopeful sign of what BOOM would like to do next.

I think it's a shame that our fandom isn't more in touch with other Disney Afternoon fandoms, mostly because I think it means that they're even more unaware of our existence than we are of theirs. I remember someone saying quite a while back that another fandom (possibly the []Rescue Rangers[/i] fans) "eulogizing" various other fandoms that "didn't make it" and including Gargoyles among their number. Especially when BOOM is kind of reviving the idea of a connection between these shows, being more a part of that larger community could help all of us.

I don't think Rescue Rangers is going to hurt the chances for Gargoyles being published by BOOM. BOOM still strikes me as a very smart publisher and I don't think they would abandon the entire Disney Afternoon concept and the one show that is the most different from any of the other Disney Afternoon properties because one title doesn't perform as well as expected. Even if Gargoyles isn't BOOM's next choice, the two most obvious contenders for the honor are TaleSpin and Gummi Bears two of he programming block's strongest shows (to my mind, anyway)) that would almost certainly strengthen the Disney Afternoon lineup and give BOOM even more incentive to continue expanding it.
