Yeah, when you count the eye patch, the armor, and the 40 years of age, the only things completly new to us about Brooklyn are the weapons (the blaster and swords)... oh, and the family.
Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"But what do you call each other?" "'Friend...'" - Tom and Brooklyn, "Awakening, Part One"

****A great ball of flame erupts in the center of the Room. The flames subside just as suddenly as they came, leaving an immense pumpkin in their wake. A grinning, ghoulish face then materializes on the pumpkin's surface; eyes, nose and mouth, all lit from within by an unearthly light. The mouth slowly opens...and Blaise spills out onto the ground, covered in pumpkin seeds and goop.**** Well, I've had cleaner entrances, but I figured this was an appropriate way to say:

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

BROOKLYN'S EYE-PATCH> I'm sure someone already noticed this, but since it deals with the Halloween themed episode "Eye of the Beholder," I have no problem repeating it.
When Brooklyn finally returned from his "TimeDance" he had apparently lost his left eye somewhere in his 40 years of travels and covered it with an eye-patch (yet another indication--along with his armor and weapons--that Brook had taken a few levels in "Badass"). Of course, we all recognized his armor as the exact same ensemble he wore in "Future Tense." But, a while ago, I remembered that Brooklyn dressed as a pirate for Halloween in "Eye of the Beholder." What's a stereotypical item of pirate garb? That's right, an eye-patch. I watched the episode and sure enough, Brook was wearing one.
Guess which eye it covered.

Until next time! ****With a wave of his hand, Blaise attempts to remove the pumpkin seeds from his person. Unfortunately, he only succeeds removing himself from the seeds. With no Blaise to hold them up, the seeds collapse to the floor.****

You make a great point about Demona's foreknowledge of the massacre and its effect on her actions.

But still, it was her choice to make and she made the wrong choice. Hindsight is 20/20, of course, but even in hindsight Demona couldn't acknowledge that she had done ANYTHING wrong, except perhaps to trust the Captain. That is Demona's true crime.

Had Demona climbed up to the Castle that evening and found her Clan massacred and all the humans gone and realized she was at least partially at fault, the situation could've been somewhat repairable. She could've greeted Goliath and Hudson, she could've joined them and the Trio and Bronx in liberating the camp and saving the Princess. Maybe she would've been turned to stone alongside them, but at least she would've been trying to make things right. And if things had changed enough that the Magus never cast his spell, I think Goliath would've been dissapointed in Demona, but I think he would've forgiven her. He was unwilling to break all bounds with Demona as a member of the Clan and his mate for some time after awakening even though he knew what she did and that she lied about it, so I'm sure he would've forgiven her in the tenth century. After that, we get a lot of what if scenarios going wild, but my point is that Demona's biggest crimes have always been her lack of integrity, her unwillingness to accept the blame for her wrong-doing and her taking it all out on various scapegoats.

Happy Halloween!

"But what do you call each other?" "'Friend...'" - Tom and Brooklyn, "Awakening, Part One"

I've often thought as well that Demona's style of retribution against the humans of Castle Wyvern (the evidence is that most of the castle's household - and even many of the refugees, such as Tom's mother - didn't like gargoyles, though I've sometimes wondered how many of them really disliked them and how many were copying Katharine's attitude out of flattery to her) was disproportionate. Their response towards the gargoyles was social ostracism; they were not actually trying to kill the gargoyles. (Though I've sometimes wondered whether Demona feared that they were heading for the massacre that her future self had showed her in "Vows". Note that Demona-1995 does *not* mention which group of humans killed most of the clan, only that it was humans who did it. It would have been easy for Demona-975 to jump to the wrong conclusion and think that it was the humans in Castle Wyvern who did it, rather than outside invaders like the Vikings - and realize her mistake too late.)

Incidentally, happy Halloween, everyone! (And I advise everyone *not* to try trick-or-treating at Demona's house. You'd definitely get the trick.)

Todd Jensen - [merlyn1 at mindspring dot com]

Oh, I gotcha. The way you worded it made it sound like it was Katharine's fault.

MATT> I wasn't being a Demona apologist. I was pointing out that Demona had no right to subject all those people to that just because Katharine was a bitch.
Greg Bishansky

Greg B> You are sounding a little bit like a Demona apologist... which is really unlike you. Katharine may have been a bitch, but she didn't betray the Castle to the Vikings, Demona and Robbie did. Being ungrateful and disdainful isn't a good thing, but she didn't pull the trigger. In any case, Robbie at least should've been nonplussed by the behavior, she is royalty afterall. I suppose he was just spoiled by Malcolm's respect for him decades before.
Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"But what do you call each other?" "'Friend...'" - Tom and Brooklyn, "Awakening, Part One"

Very, very, very sorry Mr. Bishansky but I do not understand, exacly, what do you say.
And I hope my english it is understandable, is there something that I've wrote and you did not understand?

K7OP

You know what always gets me about these Demona debates? No one ever brings up the innocent humans who must have been killed, raped and captured during the Wyvern Massacre just because Katharine was a bitch.
Greg Bishansky

Yes, it is true Algernon.
She hates the humans because they destroiyed during the centuries all of her kind, she loves her daughter and she wants all of good for her kind. But yes, her hate made her very, very mad and furious.

K7OP

I love Demona, she's probably one of the most complex, well written, fascinating and downright sexiest characters in all of pop culture, if not all fiction. But as much as I may personally adore Demona, there's no getting around the fact that by any reasonable standard she is a sadistic, racist, power mad, genocidal mass murderer, or in a word; evil.

People often compare her to Magneto, but where Magneto seems to sincerely believe that conquering or wiping out humanity is the only way to protect mutantkind. Demona on the other hand seems to use "protecting the gargoyles race" more as a rationalisation for her own malice and blood lust then anything else. Just ask yourself if any of the following seem in character for Magneto...

1) Murdering and mutilating helpless bystanders merely for his own amusement.

2) Activating a doomsday weapon designed to wipe out all sentient life on Earth, including mutants.

3) Developing a murderous vendetta against an avid pro-mutant rights human simply out of spite.

Demona has done all of the above and has yet to show a sliver of remorse for any of it. I love Demona as a fictional character but if she were a real person, I would want her hunted down, chained to a rocket and launched into the freaking sun.

Algernon

PATRICK> Is it impossible that she won't one day gain followers?
Greg Bishansky

Greg > No, she's the Unabomber. On a lone crusade with no followers to do her bidding while she hides in a cave.
Patrick
"A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men." - Willy Wonka

It will be very good for her, Antiyonder.
If she did take the rest of her clan out from the castle, things could be different from now. But she did not do this, she gives the fault to Goliath and the humans, even the massacre of her second clan, she gives the fault to Macbeth, Malcom and other humans.
That it is: at 70% is her fault.

K7OP

K7OP> In all honesty, Demona's Anti-Human mentality is just to cover her guilt in the role in the Wyvern Massacre.

Presumably if she is to redeem herself, it will begin when she takes responsibility for her mistakes.

Antiyonder

The fact is, Demona is the Osama bin Laden of gargoyles.
Greg Bishansky

K7OP> Is Demona sympathetic at times? Certainly. But she is ultimately making matters worse for both herself and her species. In most cases, she doesn't act to defend herself or other gargoyles, even if she sees it as self defense. She escalates the conflict. And in any number of ways, she has become that which she hates. You say that she wants to protect her race from the violence of humanity, but you neglect to mention that her idea of how to do that is to kill all of humanity.

I doubt the Manhattan Clan will find many occasions where they would want to fight alongside Demona. She's just not trustworthy. They could never be certain that she wouldn't start blasting civilians instead of chasing down the bad guys. And we know that even as far into the future as the year 2198, Demona is still considered dangerous. That is one case we know of where she fights alongside some of the (future) Manhattan Clan and other gargoyles, but that's a case where the fate of the whole world is at stake. Even then, it seems that no one really trusts her.

Demonskrye - [<---Brenda Chapman and "Brave" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

She is very confused in her conscience, unconsciously.
She is not evil at all, she wants that her race has live alone by the humans. She wants protect her race by human's violence.
I think, some times we will see her and the Manhattan clan against a common enemy, like the quarrymen. Maybe with time passing, she will stop to attack the Manhattan clan and decide to be their ally against human hostility.

Demona most likely looks upon Goliath and his clan as traitors - they're protecting the species determined (in Demona's eyes) to slaughter every gargoyle on the planet, and acting as an obstacle to her attempts to wipe out that same race and keep gargoyles safe.
Todd Jensen - [merlyn1 at mindspring dot com]

MATT> Also, the one thing to keep in mind is that magic is not an exact science. It could depend on what Demona's intent is as the time. What's her definition of "protecting the protectors?"

As the Archmage would say: the law that cannot be broken can surely be bent. No mortal magicks are allowed on Avalon, but he found a way... one might think he would not have been allowed to enter Avalon, period.

Greg Bishansky

Yeah, I agree. She couldn't exactly take him to a hospital or she would risk exposing them.
Gargoyleslady - [kendal dot renfro at yahoo dot com]

I don't think that's a question that Greg will answer...he generally considers hypothetical what-if questions to be pointless. I disagree; I find them very interesting, but no one can force him to answer.

I tend to think it would depend on how much longer it would be until sunrise. If sunrise was hours away, I think she'd help Broadway hobble to a hiding place in the bushes or something and then go get Goliath. If sunrise was less than an hour or two away, I think she'd elect to stop the bleeding as best she could and stay with him until the sun rises (and then stay with him until it sets).

Rebel

I've read the memo for The Silver Falcon and one question came to mind: If Broadway had gotten shot in Central Park, would Elisa have to leave him to go get help or would she stay with him until sunrise? I decided to ask here first before submitting it to Greg's queue line.

Daniel B> About Katara, I think her behavior makes perfect sense. I mean just think about the end of Season 2. Even after all the trouble Zuko caused her, she trusted that he might be changing and even offered the spirit water to him. Then he turned around and betrayed her; if he hadn't Aang probably wouldn't have (almost) died.

I perfectly agree with this, but my main point about whether her behavior makes sense is refering to the idea that several viewers and fans of Katara view her as a morally perfect girl who would never give into her petty emotions.

To me it's probably one the best examples of the audience ignoring preestablished moments and crying foul about how the character's actions don't make sense.

I mean she actually made fun of Toph's eyesight because of a petty argument, so her threat to someone who endangered her friend is perfectly in character.

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]
Algernon's comment about Norman Osborn: One of the neat things about Dark Reign is that it gives Osborn the chance to expand his horizons beyond tormenting a twenty nine year old who still lives with his mom.

Right, Sir Griff!!!!
Brian Bartoccini

Matt & Antyonder> I always figured that Oberon's immunity did extend to the Manhattan clan, simply by accident rather than by design. Oberon said that Goliath and HIS CLAN were immune. Goliath considers both the Manhattan and Avalon clans as his, so the immunity extended to the letter. And Oberon never used his magic directly on the Manhattan Clan when they attacked him. He animated statues, or his hair, or simply swatted/grabbed at them. Considering that he's more powerful than Puck and Puck was able to transform the clan from a distance, it would have been all to easy to transform the gargoyles into say...pigeons. But he couldn't because he had unintentionally made them immune. That's also why they didn't fall asleep when all the humans (and even Cagney) did. At least, that's how I saw it.
Sir_Griff723@yahoo.com - [Sir_Griff723 at yahoo dot com]
Cheese, it's as good an answer as any.

It is me, Brian Bartoccini.
So with the praying gargoyle a person can bring to life gargoyle stones. That is very interesting. If some of like this will happen in comic books, I want absoluty know about it.
Demona using some gargoyles against Manhattan clan? That will be very interesting too.

K7OP

Antiyonder> I always figured Oberon allowed himself to attack the Manhattan Clan because they attacked him first and his decree really only accounted for the Avalon Clan. Gargoyles living in Manhattan, despite their affiliation with the Avalon gargoyles, are not members of the Honor Guard and not by law immune from Oberon's magic.

Demonskyre> That would seem to be a very specific spell. Greg has repeatedly said that the Praying Gargoyle has multiple uses, but all are to "protect the protectors". It seems to me that that is even more reason why its powers couldn't be used against the Manhattan Clan. In Greg B's story, they are running around protecting humans from the statues afterall. I'm not saying these statues would have the intelligence to figure out the nuances here, but I just can't imagine that the creators of the Praying Gargoyle simply said that whoever is holding the talisman can make it do whatever they want. I don't think they would include any clause that allows them to harm a gargoyle, even in self defence. They would've had to see the problems that could bring. No, it seems to me that unlike the statues Oberon animated, these gargoyles couldn't directly attack a living gargoyle.

Obviously, a living gargoyle could assault them however. And I think it says a lot about Demona's intentions and the Manhattan Clan's character if the Clan isn't threatened by these statues, but takes risk to save their true targets anyway. It reminds me more of Demona's spell in "City of Stone" in that respect.

Matt

About Katara, I think her behavior makes perfect sense. I mean just think about the end of Season 2. Even after all the trouble Zuko caused her, she trusted that he might be changing and even offered the spirit water to him. Then he turned around and betrayed her; if he hadn't Aang probably wouldn't have (almost) died.

And just look at the later episode where she goes looking for her mother's killer - her behavior is very similar. Now I admit that her character does change in that last season - possibly the writers trying to deepen her character - but it's done in a way that, to me, makes sense. I liked her a lot more that season since she seemed more realistic instead of just the group mommy.

Daniel B
"Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." (Psalms 30:5)

Praying Gargoyle> It's possible that whoever made the statue worked some kind of clause into the magic that accounted for the idea that the threat that gargoyles needed to be protected from might be another gargoyle. Unfortunately, that would leave the door open for a gargoyle to use the statue to attack other gargoyles under the guise of "protecting" herself or himself.

Of course, we're debating how accurately the statue was portrayed in a non-canon story, which is kind of silly, though fine as long as it stays fun.

Demonskrye - [<---Brenda Chapman and "Brave" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

I wanted to add another discussion, albeit off topic. Now since some of you here are fans of Avatar The Last Airbender, I was wondering what you thought of the ending to The Western Air Temple where Katara delivers her death threat to Zuko.

Now I myself found it to be pretty poor behavior on her part, but understandable. Not to mention it makes Zuko's acceptance into the Gaang more realistic, and adds an interesting subplot (Her forgiveness of Zuko).

But what bothers me is how a good majority of the fandom seem to think that her behavior is completely out of nowhere. Sure it's unappealing, but several moments in the show make it clear that she is prone to such behavior:

A. The Boy in the Iceburg- Went yelling at Sokka, she shouts loud enough to shatter an iceburg.

B. The Waterbending Scrolls- She yells at Aang because he's following the scroll's instructions pretty well, and he's not even making fun of her.

C. The Waterbending Master- Ok, getting mad at Pakku for his sexist beliefs in perfectly understandable, but a water whip to his back is overdoing the anger.

D. The Chase- She and Toph bicker back and forth. No big deal, except that Katara pokes fun at Toph's handicap.

Matt> But would those statues, magically powered by the Praying Gargoyle, be able to go against the very magic that gives them life?

Like most magics in the Garg Universe the rules can be worked around. For instance, Oberon decreed that Goliath and his clan are immune to his magic. But:

A. While he can't put them to sleep with his sleep command, but if he brings a statue to life, said statue can attack the clan.

B. Elisa was effected by his sleep spell, because he didn't know that she was viewed as a member of the clan. So she's still victim to his magic because of a technicality.

Antiyonder - [antiyonder at yahoo dot com]
Algernon's comment about Norman Osborn: One of the neat things about Dark Reign is that it gives Osborn the chance to expand his horizons beyond tormenting a twenty nine year old who still lives with his mom.

I agree, Todd.

But I'm not saying that Demona wouldn't use the Praying Gargoyle against other gargoyles. I'm saying that I'm not sure if it is even possible to use it that way.

Yes, noble objects (and beings) can be corrupted. But to paraphrase the Weird Sisters, you can only compel an object to act against its nature for so long. Obviously, Demona can use the Praying Gargoyle to animate stone gargoyles. And obviously she can order those gargoyles to attack other gargoyles. But would those statues, magically powered by the Praying Gargoyle, be able to go against the very magic that gives them life?

How much does it matter who is holding the Praying Gargoyle?

Matt - [St Louis, Missouri, USA]
"But what do you call each other?" "'Friend...'" - Tom and Brooklyn, "Awakening, Part One"

Demona seems more intent on revenge than on the protection and well-being of gargoyles (even if she may at times use the latter to justify the former). One scene (though we only learned about it after Bishansky wrote "Rhapsody") sums that up more than anything: the scene in Brooklyn's first TimeDancer adventure where, after Demona reports on yet another group of gargoyles massacred by Constantine and Gillecomgain, True suggests that they hold a Wind Ceremony for the slaughtered gargoyles, and Demona retorts that, no, they should get revenge instead. I think nothing shows more how eaten up by revenge Demona is that she won't even think about giving her own people a proper funeral service (I think it may be - especially when you think about it - one of her most chilling actions in the series, more so than even most of her out-and-out acts of violence).
Todd Jensen - [merlyn1 at mindspring dot com]

In an effort to jump start the conversation. What do you think John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono would do if she ever met Jon Castaway and his Quarrymen?
Vinnie - [tpeano20 at hotmail dot com]

MATT> All things, even good things, can be corrupted. In my story, Demona clearly had control over it, and one of the themes I was going for was showing how far she had fallen... that she took this great gift to her species and corrupted it. It was all very thematic... at least in my head.
Greg Bishansky

Greg B> Greg's recent response about the Praying Gargoyle, though not anything new to us, got me thinking about your Rhapsody story. In your story, Demona uses the Praying Gargoyle to bring architectural gargoyles to life (again). That is all well and good, but since the purpose of the relic is to "protect the protectors", isn't it a little odd that some of these living statues would end up attacking various members of the Manhattan Clan?

Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers looks pretty good! The style is a fine fit for the property and the artwork has a lot of appeal and energy. Can't judge too much about the story just yet, but as long as it at least provides good, straightforward adventure, it should be fine.

I hope it does well, as more successful Disney Afternoon titles increase the chances of more Disney Afternoon comics in the future.

My personal theory is that Xanatos learned the Clan was living in the Clocktower as far back as "Eye of the Beholder". In the episode, Xanatos places a tracking device on Goliath. Hours pass. During that time, Elisa changes into her Belle gown and G & E are joined by the Trio and go to the block party. It seems to me that it is quite likely that Goliath returned to the Clocktower before he went to the block party and encountered Xanatos again. He probably spent a good amount of time there in fact, and you know Xanatos was paying attention.

So why didn't Xanatos somehow use this information while the Clan continued to live there for nearly a year afterwards? Well, for one thing, in the same episode Goliath did help Xanatos save Fox's life. He may have been inclined to cut Goliath and Company a break, much as he did after "City of Stone" and "Hunter's Moon". Moreover, it wasn't like Xanatos ever wanted to destroy the Clan or anything. He wanted to control them. Secretly knowing their home base would contribute to his control. And clearly he had the means to get in contact with them (through Elisa) if needed.

Anyway, Xanatos isn't an idiot by any means. I'm sure there were plenty of clues even before the tracking device was in place. If Elisa could think of the perfect place for the Clan to go when leaving the Castle, I wouldn't be surprised if Xanatos could too.

Hello all: I brought a silly football related question. Who would the s1 clan root for in a game between the Vikings and the Giants?
Taleweaver - [rfootman at gmail dot com]

Nobody knows. Xanatos clearly knows about the clock tower being the gargoyles' home by "Hunter's Moon Part Three". Puck knew where to find the gargoyles by "Possession". But that's all we know.

Puck *might* have found out about the gargoyles living in the clock tower when he was putting Goliath through the wringer in "Future Tense", and passed the information on to Xanatos as Owen, but that's just a speculation. We don't know for certain.
