Comment Room Archive : Gargoyles : Station Eight

Bit late into this, but its been a busy week so I've got an assortment of comments for different topics d:

Firstly, I picked up the third issue of Chip & Dale Rescue Rangers . . . lots of fun moments here, but I'll just say: (potential)[SPOILER] Zipper for the heartwarming-win! [/SPOILER]

Secondly, finally caught the last two episodes of Young Justice . . . won't repeat too much, just a few thoughts to add to the previous/current discussions:

(again, potential)[SPOILER]
--Superboy/Superman continues to be utterly fascinating for me.
--Did not notice Flash's tendency to collect souvenirs, I'll have to watch some of the eps again me thinks d:
--Superboy may be able to stick a landing, but the landing always takes a beating, lol
--I too enjoyed Canary's first appearance, but probably because I recognized Vanessa Marshall as the voice actress and not-so-much for recognizing the character. That said, she's great so far, nice to see that there's things to learn even when you're the strongest person in the room d:
--And I guess as a reverse to some of the folks here, I did not notice that Peter MacNicol was voicing Dr. Ivo
--Totally didn't spot Captain Atom in the most recent ep, likely because I've never seen/read anything with him in it. Despite Greg Weisman's history with the character, I just never bothered looking into the guy. Make that more side research in the weeks to come d:
--MONQIs had me laughing, at least Superboy's reaction to it
--I did notice Gotham is Connecticut, at the least definitely New England . . . [/SPOILER]
Oh, and anyone know when does issue #1 of the comic come out?

Anonymous: That "All humans look alike" bit made me chuckle :)

ASK GREG Queue: Maybe its just me, but some of those questions waiting to be answered just seem set on getting a rise out of Greg. Whether its about Young Justice, Spectacular Spider-Man, Gargoyles, whatever. I enjoy reading a smart-*ss response as much as the next guy, but sheesh folks >_<

Off Topic: I wonder if this is the last post for the week? Will anyone be tempted to respond before the room wipes? ;)

Rebel: [SPOILER] - J'onn appeared to be there chiefly to provide contrast between his relationship with his "mentee" on the team (a healthy and caring one) as opposed to his tenuous one with Superman. Superboy wishes that his progenitor would come and visit him for no other reason than to "see how [he is] adjusting," but Clark's lack of experience as a father-figure and unwillingness to cope with the reality of his clone continues to render that impossible.

- While I initially just laughed off the "I hate monkeys" line (Nolan North's reading was hilarious), I realized a few hours later that the MONQIs somewhat resemble the G-Gnomes that kept Superboy's mind under lock-and-key, which would certainly explain his antipathy.

- Dinah's Canary Cry is strong enough to kill several normal human beings at close range. She saves it as a last resort - hence why she's instead trained herself to be one of the single greatest martial artists in the DC Universe - and would certainly never use it in a mere sparring session. Doesn't Greg sometimes post credits on Ask Greg? If he does that we can find out the names of all the voice actors that we couldn't catch from the credits.

[SPOILER] Amazo was pretty awesome. Loved his voice. Also I think he served a wonderful purpose. Thanks to Amazo anyone who is a DC newbie now has a pretty good idea of what sort of powers many of the Justice League members have. I did not, for instance, know that Black Canary could do some kind of crazy Banshee scream, but now I do.

"This boy needs his father." What a poor choice of words, Batman. I could've guessed that would have set Superman off.

Loved that moment when Kid Flash saw Miss Martian with all those arms and they both screamed.

Out of curiosity, I wonder why did Aqualad say it would take awhile for him and Miss Martian to catch up? Miss Martian can fly or levitate, I'm sure she could have caught up with Robin too.

While I'm not fond of the recurring theme of little word twists in each episode, one thing I *do* like is how Kid Flash seems to collect a souvenir in each episode so far. I find it amusing.

What was Batman doing in Metropolis at the beginning of the episode? Does he have an office in Metropolis too? Looks that way.

I wonder what was the point of having Martian Manhunter show up for training. Not that I mind him being there, of course, but normally characters aren't just thrown into a scene without a reason. His line, "The technology bears the signature of Dr. Ivo" could have just as easily been delivered by Batman. Maybe he's just there to remind viewers of who he is so when Amazo says "Access Martian Manhunter", DC-newb viewers know who is being talked about. I noticed that Captain Atom was hanging out in the background during the truck loading scene and he's another of the Leaguers that Amazo copied. Hmmm.

Kinda would have liked to see Robin spar with Black Canary too. The way he was laughing at Superboy getting his butt kicked, I'd have liked seeing him try his hand. Though I have a feeling that out of the entire Young Justice team, Robin would have been the most able to hold his own with Black Canary, banshee scream and all.

"I hate monkeys." I found this line really funny. And as much as I dislike the word plays, I did get a chuckle out of Superboy's, "You're Ivo? I'm whelmed." Mostly because it was Superboy saying it and it referenced an earlier episode.

I like Black Canary a lot and I can't wait to see her do some more training with the team. Especially when they start to get good enough for her to use her powers on them. I liked how both Superboy and Kid Flash weren't enough of a challenge for her to do that scream.

It's cool to see Superbody growing and maturing. Though I feel like we've kinda seen this already. In a way, "Welcome to Happy Harbor" had a big similarity to "Schooled." In both episodes, Superboy writes someone/something off as being not worth his time, and overreacts, but by episode's end he's changed his mind. I like seeing episodes like this but I also liked him in Drop Zone when he was a bit more mellow and occasionally wry.

No closing tag from The Light this time. Hmmm.

A good episode overall. You can already tell this is shaping up to be something masterful. I'm excited to meet Artemis next week and see Speedy again, though I guess by then he'll be Red Arrow. [/SPOILER]

If he had watched Linkara, he'd know that only twice has a comic been so bad that Linkara has ACTUALLY burned it. The Marvel Gargoyles...some of them are bad (some are not...it depends on the issue) but none of them are bad enough that Linkara would burn it. He's fairly respectful to his comics, and doubly so to his donations.

So, Patrick, I guess I'm saying that Linkara wouldn't actually burn the issue so the value of your copies would remain the same.

Sorry, Chip, I didn't really think it was really a spoiler, after all (hence the sarcasm). Any of us up to date on the goings-on of Greg Weisman's work (and I doubt anyone here isn't) would have known who that was, despite not being shown on-screen at all.

As to what you and Samuel have been putting in spoiler tags (which you really don't need to in this case), you should think back to Greg's previous series. You figured out the actor; the actress was the redhead.

I have read that humans who don't spend a lot of time observing... say, chimpanzees... think that all chimpanzees' faces look the same, and vice versa. It wouldn't surprise me if the same applied to humans and gargoyles.

Does anyone beside me watch Last Angry Geek's Comic Book Issues? He doesn't positively review issues, he gives them a rating on a 5 star system. He factors in characters, art, storyline, etc.

His schtick is not tear apart bad comics. It is review comics be they good or bad to give people an idea of what to expect. I think he is the guy that would help give positive press to the SLG trades because they are all great stories.

I agree with Demon and morff, Linkara may be a fun review for Gargoyles fans but might not be all that great to pick up new/renewed fans.

Re: Linkara review> I think getting a review from Linkara is only a good idea if he says something positive about either the TV series or the SLG comic books. Preferably both. If he doesn't, then as Demonksrye said people will just get the impression "Gargoyles comic = bad" or, worse, "Gargoyles = bad".

Does anyone know whether Linkara is a fan of Gargoyles? (And I mean more than just "He probably saw the NC review".)

Gargoyles senses of perception: It kind of makes sense for gargoyles to be a wide variety of colors given that nocturnal animals typically have very poor color vision. I bet gargoyles actually think all humans look the same. n.n

Good points...if we do ask Linkara to review one, we need to make sure that it's properly bad instead of just not being up to Weisman's standard. I've only gone by the scans and I don't think I've even read them all, though, so I can't say which ones to choose. Any issue stood out above the rest of being terribly done?

I have SOME of the Gargoyles comics, and I rather liked them. I thought the whole "Gargoyle Egg" storyline was interesting, as was the story of how Elisa became a cop by arresting the wrong guy.

But to "tear them apart," no, that's just wrong. I like them. Personally. I can't speak for anyone else.

At any rate, they are heads and tails above The Goliath Chronicals.

I'm not sure I'm on board with the sending the Marvel comics to Linkara idea. For one, while I realize they are neither canon nor as well written as the SLG comics, I don't think they're horrible comics. They're fairly standard licensed comics for the time. I don't know that anyone at Disney was particularly concerned about making sure that Marvel had all the material they would have needed to make the comics feel like episodes of the show and I don't know that Marvel was making the comic a top priority eihter. They may not be great, but I don't think they're on the level of some of the stuff Linkara has reviewed.

Second, and possibly more important since its less a matter of personal taste, I'm not sure that a Linkara review is the kind of publicity we want for Gargoyles. I'd be worried that the message being conveyed would be "Gargoyles comics = bad," even if Linkara makes it clear in the review that there are other Gargoyles comics aside from the ones that Marvel produced or we the fans try to make that point in the forums.

We already had a Nostalgia Critic review of Gargoyles and I don't know that it translated into a huge wave of interest in Gargoyles (though correct me if I'm wrong). I just don't see why we would want to spend time trying to get a version of the property that we don't think is very good more attention in hopes that it will lead people to look at the show and the SLG comic.

I didnt meant that the Critic should do the review. I meant that LAG's review could be a continuation of the site's review of Gargoyles in general.

Bad or not, I wat to keep at least one copy of each of the Marvel comics as part of the collection... I may have extra copies of some issues though. I'd have to check.

I commented on a video a while back about the episode and also suggested the TPB's as a future episode. It could also serve as a continuation to the Critic's review of the Gargoyles show. He's getting better with every episode and I think he would really give CB I & II the praise it deserves.

What does everyone else think?

So, I had an idea. Does anyone out there still have the Marvel "Gargoyles" comics, and are they willing to part with them? I parted with my copies back in 2003, you see.

My idea is that maybe we can donate these things to Linkara at Atop the Fourth Wall. He tears bad comic books apart, and the Marvel comic was pretty bad.

Thoughts?

That is a good point.

I suspect that gargoyles can see much better in darkness (or near darkness) than a human can. Especially when their eyes are glowing. In brighter conditions (like a well-lit warehouse) they may not be able to see very well at all. Perhaps Goliath cut the power to the building to give Broadway and himself an advantage over the guys with the laser guns. As for Brooklyn turning on the closet light, I wonder if he had to do that because he wasn't in battle mode. His eyes were not glowing, so his vision wasn't as enhanced.

What about their night vision?

In deadly force, Goliath cut the electricity of Dracon's base to shut all the lights out and while all the humans freacked out and were blinded by darkness, Broadway was obviously either able to see OR they were guided by the noise.

Brooklyn in HIGHT NOON had to turn the lights to the closet to improve his vision.

Another example of the gargoyles sense of smell was in Bad Guys when Yama commented that Fang smelled like humanity, ozone, and fish.

Although Miss Martian has been a bit ditzy so far, she's had some wonderful character development in the last two episodes. It's been subtle, but I think she's starting to get some confidence and is discovering a place on the team.

But the bottom line is, they're all acting like teenagers. Often comic books portray teenagers as practically adults, both mentally and physically. Young Justice is thankfully taking a more realistic route and the characters are sometimes just as grating as developing kids can be. My favorite character so far is Robin because he's such an egotistical little snot.

I think lots of people (not just s8) are expecting a familial, mature team like you'd see in an ongoing comic series with dozens of issues already released in a decades-old continuity. On the contrary, these heroes are very inexperienced in a young DCU with 22 episodes of character development to go in just the first season.

That was vague; you're right. What I meant in that instance, though, was that if I had a young daughter I wouldn't want her to emulate Miss Martian. So far she's defined by the male characters around her, but she's only really been in two episodes. She's Martian Manhunter's niece; she has a crush on Super Boy. I haven't yet gotten the sense that if she were on her own she would be a particularly interesting character. She is, however, clever, which I like about her, even if she has an annoying catchphrase. If she continues to develop as a character who stands by her decisions [SPOILER] like when she destroyed the Stikk robot [/SPOILER] I'll grow to like her a lot.

For the time being, I'm going to stand by my opinion. Your argument is very valid. Although, while we have a dialogue, what's your opinion on Miss Martian? Like you, I have a pretty immense respect for GW, which is why I was so disappointed with her characterization. Demona and Elisa were such strong, respectable women that I kind of expected to see a similar quality in the female characters in YJ. Right now the only female characters have been Killer Frost, Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Hawk Girl, and Miss Martian. (also, is this character Hawk Girl or Hawk Woman, does anyone know?) So, when I was thinking about strong female characters, I didn't have much to choose from. Maybe Miss Martian will develop much in the way that Maggie the Cat has.

Actually, now that you bring up SSM, I realize I was about 50-50 on the female characters in that show. I didn't like how MJ was perfect and I found Gwen Stacy to be overbearing. I loved Sha-Shan Nguyen, Glory Grant, and Felicia Hardy. In listing them, I realize now that all three stood up for themselves and what they believed in. Aunt May was also pretty wonderful. She was adorable.

Hmm, what is the show called? It's called "Young Justice" and not "Justice League." That's like complaining that Storm and Jean Grey don't have big parts in "Spectacular Spider-Man."

She's a Martian. A young Martian. She probably has lived a very, very sheltered existence. How do you expect her to behave? Like Lara Croft? Like Hillary Clinton?

Black Canary will be in this week's episode, and Artemis will finally show up and join the team in next week's episode. So why don't you hold off, be patient and wait?

In his memo for "Upgrade", Greg Weisman suggested that Wolf would have greater smelling and hearing post-upgrade, but he wanted to downplay that for fear it would come off as silly on screen.

I'm not sure if gargoyles' sense of sight or hearing has been addressed at any Gathering, but some things can be inferred from the shows themselves: For example, Bronx has a much sharper sense of smell than the other gargoyles (as evidenced by the many situations in which Bronx "picks up the scent"), and the gargoyles in general don't seem to have particularly sharp vision, as evidenced by the fact that they didn't see all the statues in "City of Stone, Part Two" until they got closer to the ground.

It makes sense, I think; gargoyles are nocturnal by necessity, and nocturnal animals generally have poor vision. (I am reminded of bats who use superior hearing to compensate for poor eyesight. Come to think of it, Broadway mentioned that he had good hearing in "The Silver Falcon" as well.)

It's not entirely on topic, but apparently the mutates have good hearing too. (Or at least Derek does.) In "The Cage," Derek was about half a minute away from landing on the roof of Gen-U-Tech when Elisa asked to see Dr. Sevarius, and the security guard said "You just missed him," but he was still able to overhear that conversation.

I've noticed in the unanswered questions queue that some Hispanophones are taking exception to the Spanish spoken in the episode "Drop Zone" as being not grammatically correct or badly translated from the script's English. I don't speak Spanish, so I can't really comment. If Young Justice ever features Korean, then I can comment.

Anyway, this reminded me of Greg Weisman's ramble on the episode "Bushido". He said that he wanted to have the opening in Japanese with English subtitles and then when Goliath and company arrive in Ishimura, the Japanese gargoyles and humans would have switched to English as a courtesy. However, this was suggested too late in the game. Anyway, I wonder if "Drop Zone" was Greg Weisman's chance to finally have a foreign language spoken in one of shows with subtitles? If that even occured to him or if that was his ambition?
