Thank you for the Young Justice youtube videos. Also, I would like to invite everyone in the comment room to check out my review vlog on blip.tv. My brothers, best friend and I are pulling together a series of reviews about stuff we find fun. We're new at this, and we're no Nostalgia Critic...yet, but we're having fun with it and would like to get as many viewers as possible. We haven't done anything Gargoyles related yet...but we plan to eventually. Also, my brother wears the Hot Topic Gargoyles t-shirt in his reviews and in our joint skits, so there is subtle "spreading the word". Please check us out: http://Dinosaurhunter.blip.tv/

I think she'd take a more organic/naturalistic/holistic approach to the environment, as do most gargoyles culturally. But she's also big into expediency and certainly not immune to hypocrisy.

Paul> Ah, King's Quest VII. As a mythology geek, I found the realm of Eldritch and the kingdom of Etheria to be a huge in-joke. It is an otherworldly realm of faeries and mystical and magical beings ruled by Oberon and Titania, but it's primarily based on the mythology that gave Shakespeare a name for the faerie queen. I almost prefer to think of the depiction as the way things would be if it were primarily Queen Titania's domain rather than Lord Oberon's. Heh.
Actually, a really weird thing when you compare it to the Gargoyles interpetations of the Shakespearean faeries is that towards the end of the game, Oberon, Titania, and Mab are all working together to hold back the destruction of the realm (Mab is basically a dream/sleep goddess in that continuity). In addition, they all look quite Greco-Roman in appearance, and Titania in particular is most definitely closer to a Titan than a faerie queen in terms of her lineage; she's a niece of Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos, as well as the sister of the Dreamweaver (which, given his slighly "off" personality, I suspect is more a representation of Phantasos than Morpheus or Phobetor if he's not a conglomeration of all three of the Oneroi).

I'm sure there are references to Oberon in other sources besides "King's Quest" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream," but those are the only two references I know of besides Gargoyles, and neither of them mention Avalon.
So yes, I'm inclined to think that the reference to Oberon as the king of Avalon is a reference to Gargoyles.
Oberon is older than A Midsummer Night's Dream, and I don't think that Avalon is ever mentioned outside of the King Arthur legends (and Gargoyles, of course). I wonder if Oberon ever makes an appearance in any of the legends about King Arthur? I don't think so.

Richard Jackson - The GargWiki goes over the non-Shakespearean history of Oberon http://gargoyles.dracandros.com/Oberon :
In the 13th century, he made his literary debut in the medieval romance Huon of Bordeaux, where he befriends Huon, one of Charlemagne's paladins. He is here described as the son of Julius Caesar and Morgan le Fay, and the height of a three-year-old child, due to a curse placed upon him as an infant. He assists Huon on his adventures, and at last, when the time comes for him to die, makes Huon his heir as ruler over Avalon and the faerie-folk.

So Ben Edlund might have just done a lot of mythological research. Of course, The Tick aired at almost the exact same time as Gargoyles, so it could have been a tribute.

Maybe it's kind of a long shot, but does anyone know where Greg Weisman came up with "Pukhan" as a clan name? I know he's said the Pukhan Mountains, except there aren't any Pukhan Mountains. There's Pukhan Mountain (singular). Pukhan is a well known mountain, but it's nothing special in a country that's 70% mountains. It's not even the biggest mountain, so I wonder how he focused on that one.
I noted on Pukhan's page on Garg Wiki that "Pukhan" means "North Korea." If you stopped 10 Koreans and just said "Pukhan" to them, they would think you were talking about North Korea, the rogue nuclear armed failed state. So, Greg has a canon-in-training- clan called "North Korea Clan." I just have this image that Greg was asking a Korean or Korean-American animator what would be good name for a Korean gargoyle clan and the guy said "Pukhan" as a joke, knowing it meant North Korea, but he could explain his choice by saying that it's a mountain name. A cursory search and being unfamiliar with the Korean language, Greg would not know the difference. I know when American sailors on the Pueblo were detained by North Koreans in 1968, they wrote a confession where they said that they paean the North Korean regime and the meaning checked out, but the North Koreans were unaware it was pronounced as "pee on."
I don't know how high the Pukhan Clan is on Greg's priorities to introduce them if he ever started the comics again, but I see as being highly, if unintentionally, inflammatory. The name means "North Korea Clan."
I could nitpik about another thing, but Greg Weisman was technically correct at the time in the late 90s when he came up with Pukhan Clan. Before the revised Romanization of the Korean language in 2000, it was called Pukhan Mountain. But now it's Bukhan Mountain, because it's a "b" sound. This is "p" in Korean () and this this "b" in Korean (). I hope those characters show up on this. But I grind my teeth every time I write "Pukhan" because it's not a "p" sound. It would be like that city in Alabama being called "Pirmingham" all the time.
I know people who live or are from countries that were represented in the World Tour were probably irked (probabably a tiny bit, I like to think they were more flattered) when Gargoyles took artistic license with their homeland, like a gargoyle beast being the Hound of Ulster or the Dreamtime being represented as an enhanced virtual reality and I wouldn't care if license was taken with Korea's geography. But they didn't encounter IRA Clan in Ireland or Penal Colony Clan in Australia, so I draw the line at the name and the feelings it could stir up.
Then again, I suppose I could just Ask Greg or bring it to his attention. Anyway, just my ramble and rant. Where else will something so esoteric be appreciated?

Anthony Tini> Superboy may be biologically Kryptonian, but in terms up his upbringing (such as it is), he probably knows even less about Krypton and his heritage than Superman does. I've never seen a full episode of Smallville, but if what Clark is looking for there is someone who shares his past or can tell him more about the world he came from, Superboy isn't it.
Supergirl might be, but we have not evidence that she exists on Earth 16, yet.
If he wants people he can talk to about the pressures of being a hero, he's got the League. Even if he wants someone who shares just the physical experience of being a Kryptonian on Earth, Superboy doesn't quite fit the bill. He's still figuring out what he can and can't do, so Superman would be in the position of answering his questions more than comparing notes on things they alone know about.
Clark's line in the last episode, about how he would just be a reminder to Superboy of everything the kid is not, may have been an excuse, but I think it's at least partly true. All of the members of Young Justice (Is that even officially the team name?) have a lot to live up to, but being not just the son but the clone of quite possibly the greatest superhero in the world has got to be a crazy amount of pressure. Something Clark may need to work out is how t give Superboy the guidance he needs without expecting the kid to be exactly like him.
Anthony Tini: But then Superman wouldn't be human if he were to accepting. Part of the appeal of the character is that unlike other superheros Superman doesn't have to struggle to understand humanity because he is human. That is at least just as much human as he is alien. If Superman was accepting of Superboy then he would be to perfect and not quite as fully human.
Concerning Superman/Superboy relationship: I think Superman is definitely being a dick, but I understand his point of view. Yet, while I understand it, I definitely don't agree with it. From what I know of Superman from the "Smallville" frame of reference (yes, I know, not a very good reference) is that young Clark seems to yearn for some connection to his home, a fellow Kyptonian, someone, anyone to talk to and when Clark had that person in "Smallville" from time to time it seemed to help him a lot and he learned and grew to be the man he is today, fighting for truth and justice. So with that in mind, one would think that he would WANT to be there for Superboy like he hoped and yearned for that someone was there for him. Yet he chooses not to and in my opinion that's messed up.

I'm not really sure what the whole hatred of
"Hello, Megan!"
is about, honestly. Over the course of five episodes it's been said just three times - hardly enough for it to even qualify as a catchphrase - and yet by the fan reaction, it would seem as if M'gann has scarcely said anything else.
Of course, the fan reaction to M'gann in general has annoyed me on virtually every issue, so I'll stop here. But suffice to say that every issue with this series, from the roster to the neologisms to the cries of sexism, have been so blown out of proportion by constant fan whining and nagging that I've grown to love every single minute aspect of this show, if partly out of spite. Rebel>
I feel pretty silly for missing the more obvious parallels between Superboy and Thailog, especially since both are clones. I don't think Superman's initial reaction to Superboy was quite as bad as Goliath's response to Thailog, but it's taking Supes a lot longer to come to terms with the violation that being cloned is for him and deal with the fact that Superboy exists and needs guidance. For all his teen angst and surliness, Superboy has hero potential. With Thailog, it became clear pretty quickly that he wasn't going to be fighting on the side of the angels anytime soon. I know we've had discussions here before about what might have happened if Goliath's first reaction to Thailog had been a little more measured. I still maintain that being indoctrinated with what's probably an nth degree version of the Xanaos world view from birth meant the poor boy never had a chance. Even if Goliath had taken in under his wing, it would have taken a lot for Thailog to get past what he had already been taught.
Demonskrye >
Huh. That's interesting. When I saw the second half of the "Young Justice" pilot movie, my first thought was that Superman's feelings towards Superboy were actually more reminiscent of Goliath's feelings towards Thailog. And the sense of rejection on Superboy's face reminded me of Thailog's reaction to Goliath's first words upon seeing him.
But yeah, I guess in a way it's sort of evolved into something else. I can certainly see how Superboy's feelings towards Superman are similar to Angela's early feelings towards Goliath when she she discovered that he was her father. Superboy craves validation, attention, and to a certain extent "special treatment" from Superman. Superman does not hate Superboy but he does feel terribly uncomfortable around him and doesn't want any type of parental role in his life.
Young Justice> The following doesn't directly refer to anything in the latest episode, but I'm using spoiler tags, just in case.
Does anyone else think that the Superboy/Superman relationship (or lack thereof) is reminiscent of parts of Goliath and Angela's early relationship? It strikes me that both Goliath and Superman are essentially good people (though we don't know t much about YJ Superman, I suspect that he's reasonably similar to most past interpretations of him and not just a jerk in a cape) who suddenly find themselves fathers of teenagers. Goliath only gets tripped up when he's worried that he might start giving Angela preferential treatment because she's his biological daughter. He loves Angela, is thrilled that she and her siblings have survived, and is actually a pretty decent father until he the biological parentage issue surfaces. Superman is just completely at a loss. He's so thrown by how Superboy came into being and the sudden responsibility of having a "son" that he can't even begin to deal with it.
Agree? Disagree?
