Comments for the week ending March 6, 2011

Congrats Battle Beast! I admit that for the past year I was always watching that signature of yours waiting to see the latest update ;)

Something reminded me a week or so ago of 1928's The Patriot's status as a lost film (could have been a news article during the Oscar season), and I seriously did think about your Best Picture gauntlet when the topic came up :)

Major kudos . . . tell me that this qualifies a call to the people at Guinness :D

SORRY EVERYONE, BUT I HAVE TO GLOAT.

I DID IT!!!!

On March 10th, 2010, I started a challenge to watch all 475 Best Picture Academy Award nominees in 365 Days. NOT ONLY THAT, but I watched ALL 10 OF THIS YEARS Best Picture nominees, too, making it 485 FILMS!

Well, as of 7:47 PM, March 6th, 2011, I DID IT!!!!

AND, I DID IT FOUR DAYS UNDER!!! ALL 485!

I started on March 10th, 2010 with "Up in the Air (2009)" watching AT LEAST a film per day, and I finished today, March 6th 2011, with "The Great Zeigfeld (1936)". Actually, the final film was "The Patriot (1928)", but since it is a lost film, I could only watch the trailer.

I am sooooo proud of myself! I had to gloat! What an accomplishment!!!

BUT THANK GOD IT'S OVER!!! *collapses*

I DID IT!!! I WATCHED ALL 485 BEST PICTURE NOMINEES IN ONE YEAR!!! GO ME!

My thoughts on the Light...
The Light member featured in Downtime gave me an Owlman vibe.
SUPERMORFF> I think we can make a few educated guesses on some of the Light's members based on what we've seen in the series and establised DC lore. I myself, have a few theories regarding the members who've had speaking roles so far. Granted I might end up being completely wrong but hey, what's the fun of guessing without any risk?
L-1: Can't really say, he seems to be the leader so he's doubtless someone big.

L-2: Ra's al Ghul; we saw him debriefing Sensei in Infiltrator, and considering who the League of Shadows/Assasins reports to in the comics.

L-3: Lex Luthor; he seems to be the member with the most interest in CADMUS and Superboy. And every Lex in the multiverse needs a go at trying to clone Kal-El, it's like a right of passage.

L-?: The Brain; the French accent kinda gives it away. Not many big name French supervillains out there.

L-?: Ocean Master; he sure sounded like Orm to me. I'm thinking "Ocean Master" is a diguise Orm invented to attack his brother directly while maintaining deniability.
Man, 2010 was a crazy year. Remember when the monolith turned Jupiter into a star? Good times.

Masterdramon> How did you figure out those members of The Light? I mean,
The Brain
is fairly obvious, but the others? Also, even though some episodes show only 7 members, "Drop-Zone" showed 9.

Although it is possible that she cannot get ahold of the episodes she needs to determine this, Gargoylelady may write stories normally in this way, or perhaps with a writing group. Or I'd suggest if she doesn't, to find one. As for the answers? Brooklyn is Goliath's second in command. Hudson is the most experienced. Is Goliath the one that notices? Whoever did, would they just go looking? It's all circumstantial. However you want the story to turn out, that is how you write it. Do everything for a reason. That's my advice, from one writer to another:)

"Get yer jammies, Ralph!" -Bill Maxwell (played by Robert Culp), "The Greatest American Hero" -- You sure did, sir; you sure did...

I am not asking anyone to write it for me. I'm just asking questions because I want to see what someone will say.
Gargoyleslady - [Kendal.renfro@yahoo.com]

Young Justice trivia:

Kevin Hopps who wrote the Aquaman/Aqualad themed episode "Downtime" also wrote the Aquaman themed 2 parter for Justice League, "The Enemy Below".

Richard Jackson - [rickymtj@yahoo.com]

GARGOYLESLADY> <<If one of Goliath's clan went missing, would Goliath organize a search party>>

No, he wouldn't. He'd shrug his shoulders, laugh, think that any gargoyle dumb enough to go missing deserves to be chopped up into cat food, and then fly off to steal some of Demona's Buffalo Wings.

<<Who would he send to look for that gargoyle>>

He'd send Jeffrey Robbins, because Goliath is a sadist and the thought of a blind man searching for anyone that is missing makes him laugh.

<<Need this for a story I'm working on.>>

Again, please stop asking us to write your stories for you. You really don't need us to answer what were very basic questions. If the show itself doesn't tell you enough to answer any of that, there is nothing more we can add.

Damn, Downtime actually kinda makes me want to go out and buy a stack of Aquaman comics.

Chip: Ah, I do see that -- hehe, looks like Darkwing DOES got his work cut out for him, lol.

As for "Toy With Me":
I will admit that I am a casual DW fan, most definitely when compared to my memories of Gargoyles . . . I only have the faintest recollection of character voices, with what's likely only strong notions of the typical characterization of Darkwing, Launchpad, and Gosalyn.

But back to Quackerjack -- yeah, my knowledge of him is definitely not extensive, I don't remember that many episodes with him (or most likely, never caught the bulk of them), so for me it's more . . . plausible . . . to see what he does at the end, even still I definitely noticed a jarring difference from his antics in "The Duck Knight Returns" and I think mostly only jarring simply because we're being treated once again to Quackwerks backstories that watchers/readers never saw because those stories took place between the show's end/comic's beginning. I've only had one read through, but I can see why there could be frustration . . . perhaps if this wasn't a one shot story (and likely the "An Ending" is a reminder that Quackerjack is far from being gone permanently).

Still, it was a fun read considering the return of 'grandpa' Mr. Banana Brain as well as typical Darkwing Duck antics (busting through the glass, being outbid in an online auction, the insanely long alliterations, lol)
Finally:
Still haven't really made a final call on C&DRR #4, but I might agree a bit in that it felt a bit rushed those last two pages, didn't it? (Did they ever 'deal' with Fat Cat?)

And at the moment, the ending to #3 does stand out more . . . though granted, that's typical penultimate-issue climax building story arc business. Perhaps if the comic wasn't automatically a on-going series, there would have been more of an emphasized ending . . . .
Thanks for the links.

Phonecian:
It wasn't QUITE a working time paradox. It was close, but if you'll look carefully, the first time that Darkwing fell in the clock tower--or the first panel anyway--he did NOT have the bungee cord wrapped around his leg. Only the second time/panel
I am such a nerd for noticing small details like that.

Question: Did you LIKE
the story with Quackerjack? I've been in touch with the equivalent of Station8 in the Darkwing Duck fandom and a majority (say, about 70%) of their fans did not like it and felt Quackerjack was Out Of Character. I was curious what casual Darkwing fans thought. (For the record, I liked it, but I was surprised by the backlash that came from "Toy With Me".) Also, did anyone besides me think that the Chip N' Dale's Rescue Rangers issue #4 was...subpar?
...Sorry about the double-post, but one other thing I forgot to comment on in my observations of what was revealed in this episode:
Orm appears to now possess a piece of Starro the Conquerer...and it's growing back. Time to panic, people; ****'s about to get real.
And now, the epic awesomeness that is "Downtime":

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agjBX0mM_cE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvYK4emmea8#t=1s

Lot of interesting information revealed here, chief among them that
Artemis IS in fact Artemis Crock, known in comics as the third Tigress (making Sportsmaster her father if this show follows the comic continuity in that regard); that Garth (the original comics Aqualad) was offered the position but declined in order to study further in Atlantis with Tula, the first Aquagirl (and apparently Kaldur's ex-girlfriend); that Black Manta is not a member of the Light, though Aquaman's brother Orm/Ocean Master appears to be, making the current line-up Lex Luthor/The Brain/Ra`s al Ghul/Ocean Master/3 unknowns; and that at least one Golden Age hero, Jay Garrick (the first Flash) exists in the "Young Justice" universe, though he is retired.
All in all, a phenomenal episode. Hope you all enjoy!

Won't post much, but I got to mention that
Red Tornado's brief observation of Superboy & Miss Martian had me burst out laughing
XD

Also, finally managed to read the Darkwing Duck Annual --
First Story: Man, what a downer ending for Quackerjack . . . Second Story: Mr. Tad Stones: Working-Time-Paradoxes for the win!
. :D

I'm really glad you shared that article on Newsarama by Pantozzi. I was also a little disappointed about the lack of female representation and it's nice to know I'm not the only one. Since my last post on the topic, though, I've come to really like Miss Martian.

Paul> Mary and Finella gave the Grimorun to Xanatos. Mary was there when the spell was cast. And if she didn't understand which spell it was, Brooklyn knew... and it's thanks to him that Mary and Finella gave the book to Xanatos.
Greg Bishansky

Considering that the sleeping spell that the Magus cast in "Awakening" and the "stone by night" spell that Demona cast in "City of Stone" have similar effects on gargoyles, how did Xanatos know which spell to try to break?

Xanatos did mention that the Magus had written down what he did in the Grimorum, and although I doubt that he was telling the truth, I guess it's possible that the Magus could have written in the margins of the page with the sleeping spell, "I cast this spell on the Wyvern survivors."

The only alternative I can think of is that Demona could have told him, but how would she have known?

The Oscars... sucked.

Sometimes the best film wins. Didn't happen this year, but it happens sometimes. I didn't have a horse in the race this year.

Last year, my horse in the race was "Inglourious Basterds." But really, I was in the "anything but Avatar" camp. Gods, that movie was crap.

2007 was a great year with both "No Country For Old Men" and "There Will Be Blood." But "There Will Be Blood" should have won it. That film was just excellent.

But, the best decade for the Oscars had to be the 70's. Look at what brought home the big statue then? Patton; The French Connection; The Godfather; The Godfather Part II; One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest; Rocky (though it should have been Taxi Driver); Annie Hall; The Deer Hunter.
