Okay, the Formspring Sandman's reaction to Hunter's offer cracked me up...

Ding: Blaise is right. What's happening is IE9 is rendering the page in IE9 standards mode and something in the underlying HTML is triggering the rendering problems you're seeing. If you switch to compatibility mode, which you can do by clicking on the broken document icon on the right-hand side of the address bar, the page will render correctly.
Gorebash

****A holograph of Blaise appears.**** This is just a virtual projection of myself to answer a virtual question. Well, not really virtual, it just has to do with web browsers and viewing pages....

WINGLESS> It looked that way on my IE8 as well...UNTIL I hit the "broken page" icon to the right of the address bar. That makes your browser view the web page in "Compatibility View." For some reason, the newer versions of IE don't display pages properly unless Compatibility View is on. So try that out.

Until next time! ****The holograph flickers and vanishes.****

Phoenician> I got into Life and Time of Scrooge McDuck from Todd. I have all three, and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it! I only wish there was more trades that I could read with Rosa's Scrooge.

For the Garg Wiki people. A tech issue. On the main page under the pic of Lex, the text reads as follows:

Etc, Etc. Is anyone else seing it like that? I'm using IE9 and it was actually like that in IE8 as well. Any chance you could look into it? (or is there some strange reason it's supposed to be written like that?)

Todd: yeah, I've yet to fully read the 12-part Eisner Award winning series. When I decided to buy the Companion, I basically told myself to only read the rest of "Dream of a Lifetime" (The BOOM! Blast features only 2/3rds of the story, teasing the rest.)
What truly sold me in the BOOM! Blast teaser was that the featured story made it clear that Scrooge doesn't dream solely about his money, but of his early days filled with adventure and love. I must also say I loved Scrooge's consistent acknowledgement of Donald appearing in his dreams with "Nephew? What the h&#% are YOU doing here?!"

I slipped a bit in that I also read "Of Ducks, Dimes, and Destinies" but I don't feel too spoiled because as origins go, Scrooge's tale of his First Dime is a rather famous one.
But yes, definitely looking forward to reading the rest in the next few weeks :)

PHOENICIAN - Congratulations on buying the Companion! If you haven't read "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck" itself yet (your post suggested that you hadn't), it's well worth reading.

If Thor does show up at Formspring, I wonder how Goliath and his clan will respond - especially in light of his carrying about that hammer. Of course, Thor was also traditionally a protector (even before Marvel Comics got hold of him). Though I also wonder whether Thor would see Rory Dugan/Cuchulain as a rip-off of his Marvel interpretation (depending on whether Rory's shown up yet).

Todd Jensen - [merlyn1@mindspring.com]

Free Comic Book Day -- yep, grabbed the Darkwing Duck/Chip & Dale RR and the Young Justice/Batman B&B double features today, along with two Spider-Mans issues (I've never made an effort to follow the current comics, but man, do I miss TSS-M's webhead . . . and yeah, its just not the same **sigh**).

I also bought the Companion to Don Rosa's The Lifes & Time of Scrooge McDuck . . . after reading the recent BOOM! Blast last Wednesday that featured the last story "Dream of a Lifetime" I had to get the Companion to finish that story . . . once the next check comes in, I'm planning on finally nabbing the first two volumes d:

But going back to the Young Justice comic for FCBD -- I've only taken a quick look, but it seems this is new material, unlike the BOOM! DA double feature. So that's definitely something to look forward too :)

Supermorff: Thanks for figuring out that Community Portal business on the GargWiki. Really nice to see everything where we last left it!

Greg B. Right, right, my mistake. I think the general explanation holds, though...plus, she may have been under the impression - whether accurate or not - that Elisa's security would have been upped since "Long Way to Morning"'s break-in, and might not have wanted to risk going in without the initial element of surprise while occupied with projects like Coldstone and Titania's Mirror.

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-By-Fours]
"Cartman gets ten million dollars and Michael Bay gets to keep making movies. There isn't a God." -Kyle

VoLpE: Well, in the short-term, it's because Demona leaves under the impression that her plan succeeded, not realizing until I believe "The Mirror" that Elisa is in fact still alive. After that...well, her priorities shift somewhat with the introduction of Puck's "gift" of human transformation, and based on her actions in "High Noon" it may simply have been that she decided killing Elisa without first proving the supposed weakness of her bond with Goliath would be letting them "win" to some extent.

...That, and she's kinda cuckoo-pants. XD

...in 'Long Way to Morning', when Demona broke into Elisa's apartment and shot her with that poison gun, she knew where she lived, right? So why didn't Demona ever come back to try and kill her again?

Chip> Who's taking bets on whether or not Gnash will first discover this when he answers the Formspring Question of the Day ("What historical time period would you most like to visit?") and The Phoenix smiles at his response? I fully expect posts from other members of the clan describing an incredibly loud, little-girl-like shriek of fear right around then. Greg, did you say there was a wiki software upgrade taking place at the same time? Does that mean the spam filter should be working better now? Could we try opening editing up to users without them having to be given administrator access? If it doesn't work, we can change it back again, right?

Hey one and all I was just wondering what's known about Fox's tat. I mean how old was she when she got it? what made her decide on the colour/shape/remake the image of a fox? Why did she get it on her face? where eather of her parents happy about it? These kinds of questions. Chip: Absolutely. In keeping with the "vindictive informant" role I've more-or-less inadvertently taken up in this role-play, though, I've already leaked this to Robyn/Hunter. Hopefully she and the rest of the Squad (which looks to be about to offer Sandman membership...rather interesting and logical move, I must say) can do something about it before the canister gets back to the upper echelons.

Incidentally, anyone noticed that both Macbeth and Brentwood got Formsprings in the midst of all the ruckus? Brentwood at least appears to have dropped all pretense of subtext and is making overt - if utterly inept - overtures at the paragon of sexiness that is Amp. XD

Wow, what a great week. Osama bin Laden gets shot in the eye, and GargWiki comes back. I am so happy. :)

One other comment on Rebel's post: I can't agree that the mutates are non-human. Not yet, anyway. As I've mentioned before (I think even at the final Gathering), the reproductive material we carry comes from what is known as the germline, a separate cell line from the somatic cells which all of the cells/organs/etc. that physically form a person are created by/with. The mutates are definitely not within the norm of human appearance, but unless Anton was INCREDIBLY thorough at what he was doing, Talon and Maggie's child would be a "normal" human (and we don't know if Xanatos actually wanted true-breeding replacements for the gargoyles). You see, mutations or alterations to your somatic cells don't naturally translate over to the germline unless such mutations occur early in utero before the lines have split. Anton would basically have needed at least two mutational agents; one for somatic cells and a second for germline derivatives. If Talon and Maggie's kid is biologically human, then so are the mutates. It's not what you are that matters but what your KIDS are.

Unfortunately, we never got far enough to find that out, did we? <sigh>

Actually, I agree with you, Rebel. That might actually be why Spidey could still be vulnerable to the gene cleanser - while his mutations and alterations are quite impressive, his phenotypic changes were minimal (the physical appearance of your genotype - basically, how you look due to your genes). As such, there's probably a lot of "standard" human DNA left to replicate and restore his original form.

WARNING: INCOMING DISCUSSION OF GENETIC AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

In truth, even if someone's DNA is altered, the effects upon them won't be instantaneous. DNA is just the blueprint, what the DNA codes for is the building material. Case in point, people typically don't die immediately from radiation exposure; the effects of the damage to your DNA (among other effects) take time to "build up" and cripple your systems. The fact that the mutates have such incredibly altered phenotypes (and considering the partial state Derek was in when Sevarius "died") makes me think that their somatic DNA has been completely overwritten and their bodies have been producing wholly different mRNA, peptides, proteins, cells, and even organs for quite a long time. I'd make the same case for Spidey, but as I said, his alterations, while just as impressive, aren't nearly as physically obvious and thus may indicate a larger amount of "baseline" original DNA remaining.

The average person may not realize this, but a LOT of our DNA is just junk that serves no known purpose (these are called introns). These portions kept from coding simply by the presence of cellular programming and the "stop" codons in our DNA/RNA (a three-base sequence that basically tells your cells to stop utilizing the DNA/RNA at this point). Conceivably, Peter's alterations are merely additions laid on top of his original DNA or replacements in the space once occupied by non-coding introns and thus making him vulnerable. The mutates, meanwhile, have most likely had whole sections (maybe even entire chromosomes) completely replaced by Anton's work.

This has been your completely fantastical biology lesson for the week. Don't forget there will be a quiz on Friday. <snicker>

For that matter, I think it's safe to say that the Lizard would have returned in season three... I mean, Florida? Perfect climate for reptiles.

Who's to say how well the Gene Cleanser really works, even.

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-By-Fours]
"Cartman gets ten million dollars and Michael Bay gets to keep making movies. There isn't a God." -Kyle

I'm not entirely sure how the gene cleanser works but I think it would probably kill the Mutates if they took it. It is supposed to cleanse a body of all non-human DNA, correct? At this point, the amount of DNA in the mutates' bodies that ISN'T human DNA is probably fairly large. It might successfully cleanse their bodies of all cat, bat, and eel DNA, but I don't see how the gene cleanser has any means to reintroduce human DNA to fill in those gaps. So I think they'd be left without genetic material that they desperately need.

The mutates are complete, non-human, organisms. It's not as if there is some sort of simple genetic switch in their bodies that can be flipped to turn them back into humans. I think if anyone wanted to turn the mutates back into humans they would have to specifically create a human mutagen. And if they wanted to turn them back into the RIGHT humans, they'd have to have some kind of genetic material from human Derek, human Maggie, human Sykes, etc. I doubt Sevarius left any kind of built-in "quick fixes" to restore their humanity because he never wanted them to be able to become humans again. In the (paraphrased) words of Fang, "Doc's not big on shifting into reverse."

Rebel

Well, both Venom and Peter seemed to be under the strong impression that his Spidey powers (which are what, eight or nine months old by the time of "Identity Crisis"?) would be removed by the cleanser, so I'm not sure that time is really an issue (although I suppose 12 years or so might be pushing it).

I think the easier answer is that Electro simply shouldn't be grouped with the rest of these guys. His bloodstream isn't infected with non-human DNA; it appears to be something a lot more complicated (and inexplicable with real-world genetics) than that.

Masterdramon> I'd rather not think about Sevarius and Warren working together. One ethics-less geneticist at a time is disheartening enough for me.

Personally, I'd go with the simplest handwave for why the gene cleanser wouldn't work on the mutates - it's been too long. The symbiote was a biological bonding, not an complete genetic integration, and Dr. Connors had just recently transformed. Electro and the mutates have been changed too long to reverse, at least with the original version of the gene cleanser.

There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

Well, I would think the pseudo-biology behind the Mutates is quite a bit more similar to the Lizard/Kraven formulae than whatever is causing Electro to constantly generate massive amounts of bioelectricity. If the gene cleanser would work on any "Gargoyles" characters, it should definitely work on the Mutates.

The real question to me, though, is what would happen if Anton and Miles got together and did a bit of...collaborative work. XD

You know the Formspring Gang war caused me to eventually wonder this utterly bizarre-and-yet-valid-due-to-circumstances-question. Would Doc Connor's Gene Cleanser work on Talon and the other mutates?

Charles Lott > Romance takes time. It wouldn't be any fun to watch if the writers allowed the two characters to start dating each other quickly. Look at Goliath and Elisa. It was obvious to the viewing audience from fairly early in the show that the two of them belonged together. But it took Goliath and Elisa longer to figure this out, and ultimately 65 episodes before they became official.

It seems clear to me that Superboy and Miss Martian belong together, and while I don't think it will take a full 65 episodes for them to start dating, I still suspect that we aren't going to get immediate gratification on this. It will be so much more satisfying when it DOES happen if it takes a long time for it to happen rather than it happening quickly.

I don't really have a comment, it more of a question. I was wondering if any of the fans of young justice would know?? Miss Martian and Superboy seem very interested in each other. Do the writers plan to let their relationship develop to the point where their dating or are they going to keep teasing us??

On a completely unrelated note and while we wait for more new episodes of Young Justice, I have an animated show to recommend to all of you. I never thought I'd be saying something like this, but I think you should all check out "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." It's a little girl's cartoon done right. Believe it or not a big chunk of its audience is males 18 - 35. It is not a serious show--it is unabashedly silly. And it is not a show where a great deal of change takes place--usually by the end of each episode things are back to status quo (mostly). But it's written very cleverly. I usually don't actually laugh at the jokes in cartoons but with this one I did. It's got a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (though no reviews there yet). You can read some reviews of it by following these links, if you want:
