Personally, I TiVo-ed and then burned to DVD the remaining episodes myself; admittedly, they're the censored Disney XD versions, but it's better than nothing, and feels pretty good to have a "complete" physical collection.

TOP ELEVEN GARGOYLES EPISODES> Oy...I tend to have trouble with these lists. Firstly, because what I like can change depending on the day, and secondly because I'm never comfortable with quantifying these things. Still, if pressed to it, I think this would be my list:

11: Awakening
10: Bushido
9: Deadly Force
8: Double Jeopardy
7: City of Stone
6: Avalon
5: Hunter's Moon
4: Kingdom
3: Metamorphosis
2: Eye of the Beholder
1: The Mirror

NOTE: I wouldn't tell anyone that these are the best Gargoyles episodes, and to be honest some of them have fairly lackluster animation. Howeverer, they are my favorites. And usually because of a focus on Brooklyn, although 1 and 2 are there largely because of (respectively) Elisa as a gargoyle, and Elisa wearing a Belle gown (I never said my criteria were deep and complex).

Until next time! ****Blaise pulls a strange device out of his robes, presses a few buttons, and takes a running leap out of the window. A few minutes later, a hovership arrives outside the window, waits for a bit, and then drops down past the window as a very faint, "You're late!" floats up from below.****

VILMA> Instead of putting the money into the hands of a thief, why not buy the officially released DVD's? Then torrent the rest of the season two.

Oh, and you should pick up the graphic novels too.

vilma - [vilmaxiii@yahoo.com]

While I agree you should buy the episodes that have been released commercially, there are ways to download the others (torrents, for example). I have no moral objection to pirating shows that aren't available legitimately. I know that if the rest of Gargoyles was released, I would definitely buy it.

This list could easily change based on how I'm feeling at the time, but oh well:

11. Outfoxed
10. Cloud Fathers
9. Enter Macbeth
8. The Mirror
7. The Cage
6. Metamorphosis

Always nice when I can sneak back in here. So anyway, onto the favourites list!

11. Her Brother's Keeper.
10. The Silver Falcon.
9. Avalon parts 1 & 2. Part 3, not so much.
8. Deadly Force.
7. Awakenings.
6. Temptation.
5. Shadows of the Past.
4. Future Tense.
3. Hunter's Moon.
2. The Price.
1. City of Stone.

Honorable mentions for Metamorphosis, Lighthouse, and Mark of the Panther. (I know some of you here hate that episode, but I have something of a personal link to Anansi, having played him in my one and only on-stage role. That erases some of the preachyness for me.)

Vilma> I'd suggest just buying the episodes that are legally available. Part of the reason we have an incomplete release is because Season 2 Volume 1 sold less than Season 1.

Todd> Well, he is a trickster at heart, so he basically has the inside knowledge of a literal trickster.

Aside from what you and Greg B said, Owen even before The Gathering or The Price is probably one of the best servants that a villain of sorts would want.

Antiyonder

BISHANSKY - Your answer reminded me of a "Top Ten" list I once saw of the reasons why Xanatos chose a lifetime of service from Owen over a wish from Puck - with No. 1 being "He knows what happens when Puck grants your wish!" And although it was a playful list (like nearly all "Top Ten" lists), I thought that last one was a good point.
Todd Jensen - [merlyn1@mindspring.com]

MATZI> I don't think it matters. Xanatos did not want Puck's services, he wanted Owen's. There is a difference. And by Puck's very nature as a trickster, any request Xanatos made to Puck would go about as well as Demona's did in "The Mirror."

Xanatos thought Owen was a more valuable asset than Puck. And he was right.

I mean not only did he give his life, but he was so determinded to atone for putting the then Scottish Clan to sleep that he stayed on Avalon even though doing so was problematic for him (being around Katherine, but not being able to have her love). All for a race he himself once condemned.

Had to comment on the fact that I also freaked out a bit when I saw the two gargoyles and a beast on the cliff at the end of "Avalon, Part 1". And for me also, school the next day was torture. The funny thing is that it is one of the few specific days of grade school that I remember vividly. I recall discussing the episode and the ending in particular with a friend of mine. She was going crazy over the fact that one of the gargoyles looked like Demona. I was excited about seeing another beast (since Bronx was the only beast we'd seen up to that point). Good times.

Antiyonder> These changes are the major reason why I like "Avalon" so much. When I first watched these episodes I was simply indescribable relieved that there were still other Gargoyles in the world. This feeling never really vanished. But the third time or so my focus was on the story of the Magus and that made me cry at the end.
Comet

Phil> That's interesting. I was wondering where the "Lighthouse in a Sea of Time" quote came from. I know when I tried to explain it to my classmates in junior high, no one understood it. I was pretty disappointed.

Antiyonder> I'm actually surprised that so many fans view "Avalon" as the turning point for Magus and Katherine. Even before seeing that episode, I always just sort of assumed they felt remorseful, and had turned around. I think the scene where Goliath asks the Magus to cast his spell again makes that pretty clear. But yes, it is nice to see how much the Magus tried to make up for it in "Avalon." Definitely makes him a much more likable character.

I agree with you about "The Gathering." So many great episodes to keep track of. I'll have to insert that on my list in place of "The Cage."

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

Have to add Avalon to that list as it really brings some big changes to the table:

- Katherine, Tom and The Magus alive (though not for long concerning The Magus).
- Furthermore, Katherine and The Magus show a great deal of change from Awakening. Not to mention that the attempts to make The Magus more sympathetic were definitely successful.
- Beginning with this 3 parter, the belief that the Manhattan Clan and Demona are the sole remaining gargoyles is shattered.

I'm surprised that The Gathering made it on very few lists considering:
- The revelation of Owen being Puck as mentioned.
- The setup of Xanatos ending his feud with the clan.
- Now I'm among the group that actually didn't hate The Avalon World Tour and recognize how it expanded the Gargoyles Universe, but I sure that others like myself were still anticipating the travelers return to Manhattan. And as Greg W mentioned a while back, TAWT was interupted by reruns, thus making this two parter all the more anticipated.

Antiyonder

I'm going to do something a little different with my top 11. Rather than my favourite episodes *now*, I'm going to do the ones that I remember most vividly from when I first watched the series (before I rediscovered it at university). This means that I've immediately ruled out some episodes that I never saw the first time around (like anything after "The Gathering"). It also means that it may focus more on interesting visuals than stories. Here goes:

1. Awakening - Stand out points here are the Dark Ages bits from the first two episodes, then Goliath holding Xanatos over the parapet in part 5.

2. Reawakening - Mostly just remember the ending of this episode, with Goliath deciding to protect the whole city. The image of Coldstone in Times Square also sticks with me. I watched this episode and Awakening on VHS with a friend, so it was the second/sixth episode I ever saw.

3. The Gathering - This episode taught me the word "mutual" and has some great stuff with Oberon and Puck. I didn't even know who Vogel was at the time of seeing this episode, but I remember appreciating the meta-reference to using similar models for different characters (making the eventual reveal really quite surprising).

4. Avalon - Archmage = awesome. Also, here we have a combination of time travel (which gets more love below) and the introduction of King Arthur...

5. Pendragon - ... who brings this episode in as well. I became a pretty big Arthur nut for a while after seeing this episode and Avalon.

6. M.I.A. - Time travel, yay! Loved it.

7. Vows - More time travel! Vows is the lowest of the 3 time travel episodes purely because I saw it last, but during all of them I loved how perfect the predestination concept was.

8. Bushido - Gargoyles in Japan. 'nuff said.

9. Eye of the Beholder - Most people remember the Beauty and the Beast bits. I remembered Fox's werefox form trashing the store.

10. The Price - Mostly I remember Xanatos and Hudson, particularly when Xanatos wants Hudson's skin and takes it. "That wasn't nearly as difficult as you made it sound."

11. Mark of the Panther - Excellent visuals on Diane's story and Anansi was a great one-off villain. (I hated spiders as a kid.)

I am not going to post my "Favortie" episodes list; what I will do is post what I feel are the "11 BEST" ep[isodes.

11. Possession: Confused the hell out of me when I was younger. Shows the birth of the physical Cold Trio, as well as baby Alex using his powers. Well thought out episode.

10. The Mirror: A fun episode that introduces the concept of "Oberon's Children," and (personally) introduced me to Shakespeare and my favorite of all of his plays. (Guess which one? ;) ) Demona's fate is sealed when she becomes the thing she loaths the most. A Classic.

9. Enter Macbeth: Introduces us to the King himself, and we learn that Demaona and Macbeth have something big going on. More importatnly, this episode gives us the first glimpse that Shakespeare will be a major influence on this series. "It seems there is a new player in the game..."

8. The Price: This episode shatters the myth that Hudson is a useless old fart who sits and watches TV all the time. No, we learn of the wisdom of age he has as well as that he still has very great physical strength left. Moral of this ep: Never, ever discount the elderly as "foggies." Owen's fate is also somewhat sealed here, too.

7. Future Tense: Puck creates an alternate future of devistating porportions. Could it happen? who knows. Very creepy to think that this could happen. Puck's warped trickery in full force. Demona reformed? Hudson dead?? Xanatos killed his own son??? Brilliant.

6. The Rockoning: Mother meets daughter, finally, and Demona finally learns the truth about Thailog. We also get the clones. The episode leaves poor Angela confused about her mother and her mother's intentions. So we now have the mAnhattan clan... and dumed-down cloned variations of themselves? terrific.

5. Vows: Introduces us to the concept of time travel and the brilliance of David Xanatos' mind. How he had to set everything up to become "a self-made man." Also warns us that history cannot be changed. Another classic.

4. Deadly Force: This episode was early in the series, and came out swining. It was this episode that told us "this ain't no kiddie show." Elisa shot by her own gun and lying in a pool of blood? Too much for Disney, as they butcher the scene in reruns. Great episode that teaches us a lesson without the crappy "He-Man moral" at the end.

3. Hunter's Moon: Introduced the "90's Hunters." Showed just how much damage Demona has caused throughout the years. Gives us the Praying Gargoyles (and it's secrets inside) that will come up agian later on, but more importantly shows us just how much contempt Demona has for humanity. If you thought she was crazy before, wait untill you see what she's capable of now... great way to end the series, too. (But we know it's not the end anymore.)

2. Avalon: SAY WHAT? Goliath and his clan AREN'T the last of their kind?? The Eggs survived??? Tom, Magus and Kat still alive???? WOW. I remember the first time I saw this episode... when I saw Angela, Gabe and Budiccah on the cliff, man, I COULD NOT WAIT to see part two. Schoiol the next day was torture! This episode also some-what confused me, with all of the time-travel, but was brilliantly written and told. The start of the World tour which, as we all know, threw open the door to mythos like we never knew existed in the Gargoyles universe. The history of how the Eggs survived and some other really cool scottish history.
1. City of Stone: The best of the best in terms of just cramming EVERYTHING AWESOME about our beloved series into a four parter. Dark Ages Gargoyles (Kermit!), Swords, sorcery, Magic, kings, murder, treason... and a hero/villian team up not to be missed.

The episode gives us the Hunter, as well as the eternal bond between Demona and Macbeth via the Wierd Sisters. Total history lesson without being boring. just plane awesome in every detail, we learn MUCH about the back story of two of series' main villians, as well as some deep personal feelings of Demona, herself.

Simply the best, IMHO, episodes of the series.

So that's my list. I agreed with Greg's list, but when I got to thinking about it, my OWN list came out. So that's it.

That edit is pretty awful. The first time I saw it (or rather didn't see or hear it), I couldn't believe it. I mean, it is like Toon Disney is alright with Elisa having and using a gun. The edit does imply that Oberon and his Children are vulnerable to guns... but don't you dare let the kids know that silver bullets can take down a vampire or werewolf, or that iron is the weakness of supernatural beings. Can you just imagine what mischief kids could get into with that information?!?!

Well, to play Devil's Advocate for a moment, how much does cutting the head's "escape" really affect the content of the episode? We see Coyote 1.0 be revealed as a robot. We see Lexington blow a giant hole through its chest, smirk, and quip, "Who's next?" so we can assume that said robot is down for the count. We see the Pack try to get the Hell outta dodge, Lexington furiously pursue them, and then Lex make the defining choice between revenge and what's actually important by saving Brooklyn. We see the Manhattan Clan escape the oil rig as it goes down in flames, Coyote 1.0's body sinking into the water as it does. And later on, we see that Xanatos has Coyote 1.0's head and considers its first mission a successful "test."

Really, the only inexplicable parts are keeping Goliath's brief leap (if you're not going to show the pay-off, why keep those frames at all?) and Coyote 1.0's "corpse" being headless in the second-long shot we get of it sinking. But honestly, I don't find either particularly jarring. At least, not compared to...

Elisa: Oberon didn't seem too thrilled when I pulled my piece.
>obvious cut<
Tom: Oberon's Children have always been vulnerable to it...aye, and Oberon himself as well!

"Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River!" - John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival

Sorry, this a waaay off topic, completely unrelated to anything. But it's pretty cool.

In the Ask Greg archives, Greg says that Brynne Chandler Reaves and Lydia Marano got the title "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time" from Barbara Tuchman (1912-1989), though the phrase did not originate with her.

I just ran across a familiar-sounding quote in an essay by Edwin Percy Whipple (1819-1886), a contemporary of Hawthorne, Emerson, Longfellow, etc. He wrote: "Books, -- lighthouses erected in the great sea of time."

Phil - [p1anderson@yahoo.com]

That's right, they showed Goliath flying through the air with the kick, but never showed him knocking the head off the robot. I thought they cut Lexington blowing the hole in the robot too. I guess we have our own opinions of how big the plot hole is, but I know that scene didn't make any sense to me when I saw it aired on Toon Disney. I was amazed at how much was cut.
Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

Doubling-back slightly after watching the scene again - it appears that there is a significant edit, though ironically enough it's pretty much the exact opposite of what you remembered being cut. Namely, it jumps straight from Goliath leaping to Hyena's look of shock; the portion missing is Goliath ripping Coyote 1.0's head off, and the head subsequently flying off. Which still leaves a plothole, though a comparatively minor one; presumably, someone seeing that scene for the first time would just assume that some of Xanatos' men salvaged the robot from the sea sometime before the parole hearing.

So lesson learned: decapitating a robot is bad. Shooting a hole in its chest with a BFG is a-okay! XD

Masterdramon - [kmc12009@mymail.pomona.edu]
"Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River!" - John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival

Arlo: Again, incorrect. As "Leader of the Pack" re-aired two days ago, I just double-checked the recording on my TiVo, and nothing appears to be cut from that particular scene in the Disney XD version.

While I'm of course troubled by any cuts made to the original material, the issue really isn't as big as you're making it sound; only in "Ill Met By Moonlight," off the top of my head, do the edits really affect viewer comprehension.

Masterdramon - [kmc12009@mymail.pomona.edu]
"Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River!" - John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival

They've most likely cut more and more scenes as the standard amount of time allotted for commercial breaks increased. I know when I saw the series on Toon Disney, I couldn't believe how much they'd cut. It's like the episodes don't even make sense anymore.

I remember "Leader of the Pack" cuts from, I think, the scene where Bronx jumps on Coyote and starts chewing his face, straight to the scene where Jackal sees the explosion and realizes they need to scram. It never shows Coyote getting up (the scene which reveals it's a robot and not Xanatos), and it never shows Lexington blowing the hole in his stomach or Goliath kicking the head off the body. It's like one minute Bronx is on top of Xanatos, and the next, Xanatos' head is suddently half robot and is lying on the ground and it takes off and flies away. The whole episode no longer makes any sense.

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

Masterdramon> Really? I don't know anymore where I've read this. If you say it's untrue it would be good. It's bad enough that so many important scenes were cut out... and those featuring my favorite Gargoyles? Would be painful as hell^^
Comet
I'm shipping off...to find my wooden leg!

Comet: What you have read is untrue, at least in this specific instance. I've easily seen the entire series run on Toon Disney/Disney XD fifteen-twenty times over, and when I finally got to watch the "uncut" versions thanks to the DVDs I saw no difference in the scenes featuring Demona's Clan.

Wingless> That censorship is terrible... I only have the original versions of each episode and when I recently heard about the censored scenes I was really glad to not live in the USA. I think it could easily be called a crime to do this to the series!

Getting to see Gargoyles again is a treat: but seeing the censored form is disturbing as hell. It's bad enough that they cut Hudson bulding and lighting a torch with 2 flint rocks. But the whole scene in "Ill Met By Moonlight" where Elisa mentions she's been "out of bullets" and in "The Green" when Broadway & Lex toss Hyena into the wall-you don't see Hyena hit the wall. I know this is old news, but it's new to those of us getting Disney XD (Canadianized version) as of May of this year.

As for "Young Justice" yes, it appears Teletoon will indeed be running it starting in September. Sadly, no word about the new Thundercats.

Comet

Battle Beast> "I know personally how tough making a list like that can be."

I'll take that as a challenge. In fact, I propose that (in the interest of getting some people to post) that everyone lists their eleven personal favorite episodes. Why eleven? Because Greg B. set the precedent and it is my lucky number. Why personal favorites? Because that makes it more interesting. Moreover, there might be some unneccesary disagreement if this corner of the fandom tried to come up with a semi-official "best episode" list. So this is about personal favorites based on whatever criteria you choose (animation, storyline, personal interest, etc.).

Other rules: List them from 1 to 11. Number 1 being your personal favorite. That way if I (or someone) gets ambitious when we finish this, we can tabulate the results to see what we get... and to see how that meshes with Greg B's list. (For the record, I think Greg B should get to make another list based on his personal feelings rather than objective ones). I guess we'll wrap this up on Sunday night when the room clears. Also, to keep it simple, only episodes from the first two seasons (Awakening to Hunter's Moon) and all multi-parters count as one episode.

So, without further ado, I'll start:

1. Reawakening
2. Hunter's Moon
3. The Price
4. Possession
5. The Green
6. High Noon
7. The Hound of Ulster
8. M.I.A.
9. Turf
10. The Mirror
11. Bushido

Greg> I thought your list was very good. I think I would have had "Deadly Force" higher up, and I would have had "Avalon" on the list. Great job. :)

I know personally how tough making a list like that can be.

In that case, perhaps Drs. Duane, Morwood-Smyth, and Arnada need to get an account(s) on his behalf, LOL?

I'd be interested in Arnada's interactions with Jay Sato, if nothing else.

ANON> That's probably because the formspring crew tend to play things a little straighter then on twitter and nobody's supposed to know Nokkar exists for another two hundred years.

Man, 2010 was a crazy year. Remember when the monolith turned Jupiter into a star? Good times.

Something's just occurred to me; of all the characters from the Garg-verse that has shown upon Formspring, canonical and otherwise, there's one in particular that I've not seen yet. Nokkar! Poor guy's been left alone on Twitter all this time. Maybe he'll have a better chance at a conversation on the 'spring?

(Not that I expect this to bear fruit. But, just wait and see...)

Indigo> Are you sure? I ran a quick Google search and found most sites listing "Targets" as airing a week later on September 16th. However, the series is indeed premiering on the Canadian station Teletoon on September 9th.

YOUNG JUSTICE IS COMING BACK ON SEPTEMBER NINTH! I literally squealed and danced around in a circle when I found out. Thank God I was alone.

Greg B> Nice list. All good episodes of course, though I would've put "Reawakening", "High Noon" and "Posession" in there somehow.

As for the GargWiki... I thought I was going to see/read another modification to a non-canon page that would've made me roll my eyes, but the new pic/morph/video is interesting... and funny... and sick...

Supermorff> I just looked around too and I can't find anything to back up the Emmy win either. Everything seems to link to Ask Greg or Brandon Vietti's blog.
Richard Jackson - [rickymtj@yahoo.com]

Richard Jackson> Yeah, it's great news... but I can't anything official to back it up. I was under the impression that the Primetime Emmies weren't announced until September 10 or September 18 (depending on category), and I can't find Phil Bourassa's name anywhere on the official Emmy website (even in the full list of nominations). Am I just looking in the wrong place?

Greg and Masterdramon> I agree, your list is really quite spot on. It's hard to argue with, although I felt (like Masterdramon) that "Grief" should have been in there somewhere, as well as M.I.A. I have never seen another cartoon ever use a real-life WWII war hero in a WWII story before, as well as having him actually SAVE the lives of the fictional heroes. Throw in the theme of loss during war time (a heavy subject for kids when you think about it), and the scene in the shop that Greg STILL uses to demonstrate character motivations, it's really quite a unique episode.

But, then again, we all have episodes that speak to us on a personal level, which is part of the beauty of the series.

Gorebash: Thanks for the links! Some of those fanart pieces are really quite stellar.

Greg B.: Excellently constructed list. I agree entirely on both the #1 and the #2 slots, and everything else listed is all just great stuff. The only other episode I think I would've swapped in at some point is "Grief," my personal favorite entry in the World Tour, which I think is just fantastic from start to finish. Featuring easily two of the best guest performances in the entire series certainly helps its case as well.

As for your note vis-a-vis "Deadly Force" on Disney XD, I caught the edited version recently out of curiosity's sake and it does feature the shot with Elisa on the ground...though with the bloodstain removed. Off the top of my head, it also cut Broadway looking at his bloodstained hands (so it cuts directly from him laying Elisa on the gurney to him gasping in horror, which looks quite silly) and, for whatever reason, the scene where Broadway is weeping on a rooftop, too overwhelmed by guilt to return home.

But hey, at least they still air it. XP

BISHANSKY - Thanks for your list.

I'd noticed that Pack-style scar around Lexington's eye when I saw "Future Tense" at the 2001 Gathering, and thought it a great touch.

And I agree with you that it shows how ready Goliath is to think the worst of Xanatos, especially since the "real" Xanatos doesn't strike me as likely to engage in blatant "take-over-the-world" schemes like the "Future Tense" version.

I'm another one of those fans who thinks Hakon's return in "Vendettas" anticlimactic (as I've said before), as you mentioned in your review of "Shadows of the Past".

Thanks, also, for the advertisement for the "Gargoyles" trade paperbacks. And I'm delighted that you gave "City of Stone" (one of my favorites) the pride of place.

I have a desk calendar which gives a specific historical event for each day of the year; today's entry (August 15) was Canmore's victory over Macbeth in 1057. It included a summary of Macbeth's defeat of Duncan in 1040 and his subsequent defeat by Canmore and his English allies (which came in two stages; the first in 1054 at Dunsinane - Shakespeare clearly blended that with the final battle - and the second in 1057).

GREG B.> I'm guessing that Mumm-Ra doesn't really give a damn about the lizards' plight but is just using them to achive his own goals. The story arc might play out with him abandoning them once they've outlived their usefulness.

Likewise, he may need the jewel for somekind of evil ritual that will give him the power of a god or open a portal to Hell or somesuch. Hence, why him getting his hands on it would be a Very Bad Thing.

Of course those are just theories based on the assumption that the writers have a plan and know what they're doing.
