I was aware of The Gathering of the Gargoyles as a company/corporate entity in the sense that I knew there was some overall management going on but wasn't paying it an extreme amount of attention (kinda like how you know your car's engine is working because you hear it running, but you don't constantly pay attention to the sound). I figured the location bids were basically for licensing the name and getting some overall support from the parent company (though I may be wrong about that - I'm on the outside here). After all, anyone who paid in advance via Paypal or whatnot made a payment to The Gathering of the Gargoyles Inc. (or was it LLC? - my history doesn't reference that part), not to mention all the copyright notices and symbols at the bottom of the various Gathering webpages. Case in point, the first one I attended (2008) has at the bottom of its main page "The Gathering of the Gargoyles is a non-profit corporation, founded and run by the show's fans." Just because it's a corporate body doesn't mean it's not by the fans, for the fans.

Overall, I think we may be getting hung up on a difference of terminology here. The Gathering of the Gargoyles was/is its own thing. NARRCC is definitely a gathering as any convention is. I think a few people are thinking convention primarily about gargoyles = Gathering, much like some people call all soda as coke or tissues as Kleenex. Most companies try to avoid trademarks becoming generic amongst the public like that (and it's hard to escape once it's begun).

As to the "equal" and "free speech" comments, I have two things to say. To quote Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time, "like and equal are two entirely different things." Equality doesn't mean everyone should think in the exact same fashion - heaven knows my own brain works in very odd ways compared to most. Second, the thing about free speech is it works both ways - you get the right to say what you want but you also have to deal with other people responding to what you say, even if it's harsh criticism, pointing out holes in your assertions, or just flat-out disagreeing with you. Not agreeing with your point of view is not flaming.

Admittedly though, I may be over-analyzing all of this - I tend to do that. Kinda ties back to the point about like and equal, doesn't it? Heh, and to my brain being weird as well. Yeesh, that's a big block of text to start off the New Year with; I'll try to have a bit more brevity after the wipe.

Except this has never once happened. If repeated questions were deleted, the queue at ASK GREG would be much smaller. The only questions that ever get deleted are the ones that break any of the three rules.

1. No original ideas.
2. No ideas masquerading as questions.
3. No requests for employment.

Those same rules have been there since 1997, and they are very prominent, not hidden at all. If any post gets deleted, one of those is the reason why. The answer has already been provided.

I was aware of the Gathering company, though I'm still not sure what we're arguing about exactly. This all started because someone was under the impression that the NARCC group was going to call their Con "The Gathering", which they definitely are not.

So what are we even debating here?

Okay folks, Honestly, how many of you knew that "The Gathering Of the Garglyles" was an actual Company" - other than those involved in the convention? I'd love to hear the answer to this. As a reasonably active fan-and someone who's been around here since early 1997, I certainly wasn't aware. Admittedly, I was aware many of the same people were involved, but I assumed by choice.

As for my "Not all of the fandom is on equal footing after all.." comment.

How many new fans come in here, introduce themselves and ask an somewhat obvious question and get flamed out of the room by "certain" people.

Often people come in with some great concepts and ideas and they go ignored or are are flamed because they don't agree with with someone elses point of view. Geez, thought there was something called freedom of speech.

People that make grammer errors or spelling mistakes are often harshly corrected or flamed(I've been among them). Is this a way to treat someone in a fandom? Often there are reasons. I'm legally blind. Reason enough? Spell checkers are only so good in that instance.

With "Ask Greg" when a question is asked that has been asked before and is removed-is the person directed to the ask Greg archives? I don't think so-since I've seen many people go wondering why their questions are deleted without an answer.

And Greg B - you might not like my comment of there being different levels or cliques in the fandom, but using foul language certainly doesn't disprove my point.

Wingless

WINGLESS> Gathering of the Gargoyles Inc has existed since before 2001. This was never a secret, and while the staff did rotate, GOTG Inc was involved each year since (with one exception).

The staff is the director, the company is the producer. Got that?

Happy New year!

The Gathering was held in NY in 97 and 98 because 1)that's where the show was based, and 2) the people interested in holding it were based there as well. The idea of holding it in other locations was supposed to give others a chance to hold it and not to put the burden on the same people every year. Thus the reason for holding the bids.

I might point out that no one ever bothered to mentioned that a company had been formed in order to put on the convention. It was always talked about as a group of interested people putting it on, and since it was supposed to be a different group doing it each year, It didn't seem plausible having a company that could simply change hands each year. If someone had bothered to metion that tiny detail-it would make a little more sense. That said. The sarcasm in here goes a long way to why a lot of people(including myself) refrain from posting in here any longer-then again, I'm sure there are those of you who would prefer it that way. Not all of the fandom is on equal footing after all, right?

New Year's Day trivia: in Scotland, it's considered a good omen if the first person to enter your house in the year is tall and dark. That ought to qualify Goliath, except that the "First Foot" (as they call it in Scotland) should not be barefoot. (And the people who came up with the rules probably didn't consider gargoyles people.)

It's also said that it's bad luck for "a red-haired man to come in to your house first on New Year's Day; there'll be a death in it afore the year's out". I don't know about that, but if a certain red-haired female gargoyle comes into your house any time of the year, there'll probably be deaths in it before the hour's out.

Yeah, sarcasm really is the high ground. Geeez. *rolls eyes*

I think the confusion is stemming from the difference between the Gathering (the event depicted in the series) and the Gathering of the Gargoyles (which is a small company that ran the conventions). Does that help things at all?

I'm going to open a restaurant and call it McDonald's. That should be perfectly okay, I think. I mean, we do live in a communist society after all.

I'm also developing a comic book idea, it's about a bat boy who works for the Mets who discovers his coach is a criminal, and takes him and his henchmen out with a baseball bat... I think I'll call it: Batman!

Think I'm gonna change my sig quote to something more appropriate for this discussion.

The Gathering was never in the same location twice in a row except for the first two years in NYC, so I don't understand how anyone could say that the "original idea" was for it to be in one location.

Wingless, do you think I could start up a new computer software company and call it "Microsoft" without running into some legal issues and/or causing a lot of confusion in the marketplace?

A business's name does not just come up for grabs because the business entity goes idle. I was under the impression that NARRCC intends to have a much wider focus than "Gargoyles", anyway.

Harvester of Eyes: I'd like to know how, since the show is owned by Disney. We're all one fandom. The original idea of the Gathering was that It would be heald in one location one year, and WHOEVER wanted to do it the following year-and could put in a decent proposal could do it. It was about the event, not the name. It sounds very petty not allowing another part of the fandom to use the name.

Correct me if I'm wrong but according to Facebook, it appears that someone named John Cremens is attempting to start anew with a Gathering in Las Vegas June 2012.

So maybe a new radio play could be happening in the future, right?

Anthony Tini

This would, hypothetically, only be a non-canon Radio Play crossover anyway. Just like the Gargoyles/Spec Spidey play, it would be a lark and a goof.

One thing to keep in mind is that the SpecSpidey/Gargoyles crossover was largely designed around which voice actors were coming and participating. It would be the same with any other crossover Gathering Radio Play.

I actually think W.I.T.C.H. could work a little better than Gargoyles, if we're talking about crossovers.
Harlan Phoenix - [harlanphoenix@live.com]

Todd: Perhaps he'd do a crossover with the Earth-16 version of Captain Atom (and probably the Team as well)? That would be a sight to see, especially if we got some fun callbacks to "Flashback of Notre Dame" in the process.

Fun to think about, if nothing else.

"Let's dance! Put on your red shoes and dance the blues..." - David Bowie

I wonder whether, if the Gatherings were still taking place, Greg Weisman would have written a "Gargoyles/Young Justice" crossover radio play for one of them, just as he wrote a "Gargoyles/Spectacular Spider-Man" crossover. (Of course, "Young Justice" would be more difficult to crossover with "Gargoyles" because it's got a whole bunch of DC Comics super-heroes and super-villains, a lot of whom are public - to the point where the Justice League's Hall of Justice is a big tourist attraction - which would be far less compatible with "Gargoyles" than a single New York super-hero and his rogues' gallery were.)

Please don't ask Greg about that when "Ask Greg"'s queue opens again; we know how he feels about hypotheticals.

Todd Jensen

C > At the moment, none of us knows WHEN the series will come back on, but we can say with confidence that it WILL come back on at some point, since the rest of the Season 1 episodes have already been finished and Season 2 is already in production. I'm more partial to the older Mario and Zelda games myself. I grew up playing Mario 3 and A Link to the Past, so maybe I'm just nostalgic for them.

Lately, though, I've been playing the Fire Emblem games much more often. I think that the Tellius series in particular has similar themes regarding prejudice and fear that Gargoyles has, so maybe that's why I like those games ("Path of Radiance" and "Radiant Dawn") in particular.

I love children's books, and I'm really exited how lovely these terrible events were managed to suit this... I also love the fact that Tom plays the major role in it and Mary appears frequently. The end, the thing with the eggs, is so wonderful. You can almost hear the call of "Avalon" or something.
The book looks and even SMELLS almost new. It also still has the original price sticker. I'm happy to have this, as one who loves Gargoyles and books (the more special the better).

Now I'm still waiting for this "Look and find" book I ordered earlier.

Neill: As a massive fan of the "Metroid" series as well, backtracking doesn't bother me in the slightest. Neither do sidequests or interacting with lots of dialogue text, since to me, that's what makes the Zelda experience.

If I want a game that'll shoot through at a brisk, no-nonsense pace then I'll play "Super Mario 3D Land" or "Sonic Generations" (both of which I got for the 3DS at Christmas as well). That's not what Zelda's about, to me; Zelda's about taking your sweet time, even when the destruction of the world is crashing down upon you. XD

Skyward Sword> I too am loving the game, as a massive Zelda fan. Palyed most of them, this one is definatly different, and there are some very annoying things (Third Dungeon), and the controle are something you have to get used to, but overall I am very much enjoying it, although I don't play for hours a day, I am slowly getting through it.

Yah, there is, at times, major backtracking, but it just makes the game longer and more fun. IMHO. SNES Zleda is my favorite, and I can get through it pretty quickly, too. Link's Awakening, and the Original are my other favorites. And OOT.

@Masterdramon - I'm glad you're enjoying it! I played it every night for two weeks for about 2-3 hours a night before beating it.

@Neill - I recommended to my friend who also found the motion controls cumbersome to try playing standing up. I played most of the game standing up and it really made me feel like part of the game. I know the controls aren't flawless especially when we're so used to just hacking and slashing in Zelda games of the past, but the storyline and the challenging puzzles made it a very rewarding experience overall. I fell in love with this game.

@Landon Thomas - No YJ in January? Jeez. What is hell is going on over at Cartoon Network?

Anthony Tini

Masterdramon-> I finished Zelda SS a month ago and to me it's the 3rd worst Zelda game of all time. I don't wanna spoil anything, but this game has major problems: It annoys the sh!t out of you, makes you do so many unnecessary things (including a LOT backtracking) and always interrupts gameplay with a sh!tload of textboxes and stupid searching quests instead of letting you enjoy the game. You know, if it takes over 5 hours to actually get to the 1st dungeon, then something is horribly wrong! I can beat Zelda for the SNES in about 3 hours...

But I guess this isn't the right place to talk about...

Anthony: Since it's fairly off-topic, I'll be brief, but in short...
As a massive Zelda fan and a player of nearly every other game in the franchise, I cannot get enough of this one. I've just finished the first dungeon, and so far, the motion controls are spot-on and totally intuitive; the Beetle in particular is a blast to use. Other minor add-ons, such as running and the ability to leap along ledges/vines, make the experience one of the smoothest and crispest on the Wii...if not on any current-generation console, period.

It looks great, sounds fantastic, and even at this early stage I'm already in love with this version of Zelda, Fi, and Ghirahim (whom I am now officially pulling for in SSB4). I'm having a blast, and I can't wait to see more.
