Greg> I agree: Goliath was the one interested in the human ritual of the wedding.

Also, Demona's interest in human ritual is subconscious, and creating a birthday celebration for herself when only humans do--that would be pretty blatant. She would need something she could deny, which her specific interest in Angela falls under.

CHIP> Maybe, but I think it's safe to say that Demona didn't break the Gate and half and give one piece to Goliath because she was interested in Prince Malcolm's wedding so much as she had just been freaked out by her future self appearing, showing her the coming massacre, telling her to actually kill Goliath (whom she was still in young love with), and then Goliath told her to fulfill her vows of love because they would save her.

For every poor soul who groans during an Adam Sandler-funded Rob Schneider vehicle, there is a child crying life-affirming tears when Bambi's mom is shot. Somewhere out there, a film student is finding out what Rosebud means for the first time. A man is pausing as Fredo prays the Hail Mary on a boat over Lake Tahoe. A woman grasps her heart as Bogie's love flies off into the foggy night. All it takes is one moment to change a person. And that one moment... no matter how fleeting... is worth a thousand Transformers."

Paul & Greg> I can see her doing it, because of her hypocritical nature involving humans...BUT...I feel there would have to be a specific reason for it. Some circumstances to set it up. Like maybe Angela celebrating it because she was raised by humans.

PAUL> I can't see Demona doing that, and it wasn't the human wedding that young Demona took to, but... watch the episode again, because there was another reason entirely she was so desperate to declare and prove love at the moment... it had nothing to do with Prince Malcolm's wedding.

Demona probably would actually celebrate her hatchday (assuming that she knew it), given her interest in other human customs such as marriage. (Goliath saw the human custom of exchanging tokens of love as strange at the beginning of "Vows," but Demona took to it immediately.)

SOMEGEEK> I can't see gargoyles celebrating hatch-days. It just doesn't seem like something they would do. I can see them celebrating hatchings as they take place, but that's it.

As for human birthdays, they'd approach it the same way they approach any human custom, I think. Interest, indifference. I can see them doing something for Elisa, for example.

I've read some fics in the past where the Mary Sue of the story makes up a "hatchday" for Brooklyn, Demona, etc... and they're never done well.

On a related tangent .... have we ever seen a Gargoyle's "birthday" ceremony? I would imagine if there was one, it would be a communal celebration due to multiple eggs hatching at the same time...

I'm not much of a gamer, but my boyfriend is. I've watched him play the Uncharted games and I'll admit to being as entertained watching it as I am with many tv shows and movies.

Meanwhile, in a last ditch effort to liven up the Room (and for no self-serving reason, I promise), I'll just put it out there that 31 years ago today I was born!

Brainiac, Supermorff, thanks for all the info. I think it covers most of my questions for now, but I reserve the right to come back with more after release :)

In answer to your questions- I don't think I've anything but the most simplest games for probably 10 years, but to my recollection it was the first person POV that did me in. I have a vague memory of a 'new' Castle Wolfenstein doing me in very quickly. Later I remember playing Mortal Kombat at friends without problem. Well, I had no problem. They seemed a little annoyed. It wasn't so much that I used the Gizmoduck method instead of learning any button combinations, it's that I tended to win doing so. (The trick is getting knocked down and waiting for the opponent to come close before hitting all the buttons at once.)

I've had enough friends who are gamers to hear about the technology and concepts. It's just nerd fascinating. Well, standing behind a little kid playing Grand Theft Auto in an arcade is hysterical, we kept giving him more quarters, but the rest is fascinating.
I certainly hope he gets to do all nine books too; of course, even three would be a feat worth celebrating, since it would mean he'd finally broken the "only two seasons" pattern.

It seemed weird, though, since I'd once been working on a children's fantasy book series that looked like it would have run to nine books if published; it's on hold at present, alas, since things didn't work out with the publisher for various reasons, and I haven't found anyone else interested in it. Laura> A classic example of the "plot - action - plot" setup for a game is the NES game Ninja Gaiden, ostensibly the first game to utilize the concept of the cutscene - a non-controllable, plot-heavy section that breaks up the action stages of the game by progressing the story and acts as a sort of reward for the player completing the previous gameplay section. I wouldn't be surprised if YJ: Legacy does something similar to that, with major plot developments that have a specific path needed occurring between the missions the Team members go on.

The big issue of player variability from what I've seen and read thus far is the ability to chose your three Team members. The choice of which characters you take on each mission will apparently have some effects, though whether these are merely cosmetic differences or not remains to be seen.

Overall though, any plot-heavy game typically just "waits" until the player goes where they need to in order to advance things. It can indeed take you out of the experience how everyone basically just stands around and waits for you to finally decide to go save the day, especially in sandbox games. Personally, I rather like the rare game like The Last Express where events happen according to the clock and seeing a scene in one location means you miss one that happens at the same time elsewhere.

I could go into the mechanics and structure of gaming, both retro and modern, for a very long time, so if you want some lengthier discussions, feel free to email me. And like Supermorff said, I don't doubt the Let's Play community will fail to upload commentary-laced playthroughs of Legacy after it's been released...though I wonder which systems they all will use (I'm probably going to go with PC).

Laura> Not all games are the same, and none of us know yet how YJ:Legacy is going to work.

Your question seems to assume that the player must control the character all the time, and thus the story cannot progress until they've jumped through certain specific hoops. That's not necessarily the case. Just as in a TV show, there may be cuts and events happening off-screen. In fact, the game could be very linear, with story told largely through dialogue and cutscenes that the player doesn't control, and gameplay being, for example, puzzles and fighting. This is almost exactly like watching a TV show, but with you controlling the action bits. The story progresses at its own pace and the "metaphorical" placement of the prime mover is out of the player's hands; the game puts them where they need to be for the sake of the story, and you only need to move them around physically.

On the other hand, perhaps the player will control the character all the time. It might be more open, with the player choosing everything the character says and does. In such games, the player has full control over whether to go on the mission, and when, how to go about it. In such games, the story itself is created out of the player's choices, and the consequences to those choices. Players contribute not only to the outcome of the story, but to the development of their characters, allowing players to become heavily invested. As such, the choices and consequences drive the "metaphorical" placement of the *players*, and thus the characters as well.

A lot of games lie somewhere between extremes. My personal suspicion is that YJ:Legacy will be closer to the first possibility, with elements of the second.

None of this is particularly new to video games either. Certainly not in the past few generations. Linear games have been around since the '80s, open world games since the early '90s. Perhaps the games you've seen have been only a narrow segment of the medium? Do you even get motion sickness from games that aren't using first person POV?

Whatever the case, detail will certainly be added to the YJ Wiki and other sites once the game is out. There will probably be videos on YouTube as well.

Supermorff

I'm not very familiar with the current (or past few) generation(s) of video games. I can't really play a significant percentage of them because, (and I do realize how pathetic this is), they give me motion sickness.

How exactly do they tell a story? I get they can exist within a story, but how do they progress a story if the prime mover is not guaranteed to go to a particular (physical or metaphorical) place at any particular time? The most I can think to compare it to would be a D&D type setting with a Dungeon Master nudging you into a particular room, or a dinner mystery with unsubtle clues stage whispered at a given time. But neither of those scenarios would get me excited as an audience or a creator. How do these types of games work?

Once the game is out and folks have a good stretch of time to play it, is it safe to assume that detailed descriptions for the none gamers will eventually be made available? (I'm guessing it is the sort of thing to find on the wiki.

(mmm. nice how the question I'm currently most curious about isn't for the queue. Better than waiting till September!)

thanks

I was thinking about the New Olympian clan today and thought why they are isolated from the rest of the New Olympians. I think the clan could be very large, given the lack of contact with humans for 2000 years, and living a seemingly peaceful life. But, what if, during the period that New Olympus was isolated, the Gargoyles and New Olympians came into some kind of confict, resulting not only in the deaths of many, but the reason for the clans isolation from a people that would seem to welcome them. Just a thought.

Comet. I agree with you, but I do see one possible problem. One of the other beasts on Avalon is almost a certainty Bronx's younger sibling. There is a chance the offspring of Bronx/Boudicca and the other mated pair would be too closely related to mate together.
Adam - [carl006_1999 at yahoo dot com]

Adam> Okay, I think I understand...

I always wondered what London Beasts looked like before they went extinct, and when they even died out. Is it possible that even Griff has seen living ones? He looks so sad when he's asked about them, is that only because he wishes they had some, or maybe because he saw the last ones die?

The Labyrinth beasts? I have a feeling they might be clones, at least most of them. Maybe even clones of Bronx and Fu-Dog (we still don't know what Sevarius will do with the samples he collected on that Halloween).

And let's not forget that the beasts on Avalon may have 4 eggs in each pair, and if we assume that Bronx and Boudicca have 4 eggs too that makes up to 8 eggs for these beasts alone. Not that much, especially since the babies are all related to each other, but it shouldn't be a problem with a bit mixing with Xanadu Beasts. So much cool variations could come from that.

Fu-Dogs alone are pretty variable, although all seem to have some form of a mane.

http://666kb.com/i/cdvly2r6qiw7dlg9j.jpg I think that's a Quilin, and I wonder if Gargbeasts can have hoof-like feet like some bipedal Gargoyles.

Maybe the Beasts of New Wyvern come mostly from Avalon, possibly even from the clones.

Comet
Double, double, toil and trouble. Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Comet. I was thinking a little a both. I found is sad when they said there was no more beasts in the London clan. I think that the Xanadu clan has a large percent of the surviving beasts. I am thinking upwards of %75. It is possible that the Xanadu clan could redistribute beasts to all the clans. But I think a little variety would be nice.

I was also thinking about the Labyrinth clan. We know they get beasts in the future, the question is are these beasts "original", clones, or perhaps a mixture of both?

Then again, maybe the "stock" of the beasts does not matter as much. The New Wyvern clan is supposed to be comprised mostly of Gargoyles that are "Scottish stock", would that also apply to the beasts?

Speaking of "Young Justice", last Thursday I bought the second and third trade paperbacks of the "Young Justice" comic book at Starclipper Comics and read them. (I'd already bought the first one last year.) This won't be a detailed review, but a few comments:
1. I remember Greg Weisman saying in a chat session in early 1997 that General Eiling's depiction in a "Captain Atom" comic he'd written before he did "Gargoyles" was a sort of forerunner of Xanatos. I haven't read that comic, but if its depiction of Eiling was like the one in Volume Two of "Young Justice", I can readily believe that. The scene at the end of the Captain Atom story, in Eiling's office at the Pentagon, definitely had the atmosphere of those Xanatos scenes at the end of "Gargoyles" episodes.

2. This is probably wrong of me, but when I got to the clash between Batman and Ra's Al Ghul, I heard Ra's voiced by David Warner rather than by his voice actor from "Young Justice". I'm afraid I'm far more familiar with Ra's from "Batman: TAS" than the "Young Justice" version (since I've still seen only the first twelve episodes of "Young Justice").

3. I felt suspicious of Prince Orm when I saw "Downtime" (I'd seen plenty of cases of kings' younger brothers no longer next in line for the throne since the king's now a father, and how they didn't take it well), and the Atlantis story showed indeed that those suspicions were well-founded (of course, I remember people pointing out here, when I first reviewed that episode, that in the comics, Prince Orm and Ocean-Master were the same guy). I also liked the bits of Greek lettering to represent Atlantean, and the line "anonymity is the Purists' greatest weapon" - so true of hate groups. (I remember Castaway making a similar statement in the comic book version of "The Journey".) Not to mention the big surprise about the true nature of "Dr. Lockhart" and "Danette Reilly" - two robots disguised as humans!
I'll have to remember to submit reviews of these two books once "Ask Greg" reopens for questions.

Hufflepuffs are great finders

It's one thing, like the recent crowdfunding for the Eternal Darkness sequel or the Veronica Mars Kickstarter, if the production team fronts it up themselves with permission from their legally owning parties (or, I guess, in the case of Denis Dyack just funding a super similar project that's still legally distinct from the only game he has real recognition for).

It's another thing entirely to see something dedicated ENTIRELY to "reviving cancelled shows", like some sort of hugbox or safety net that just encourages the inability to move on. Fan campaigns on their own are admirable. Some blanket organization trying to actively fight a company's economic decisions, I can only imagine, would be a big headache. Maybe I'm wrong, but it just seems super wrongheaded for a crowdfunding campaign to try and make a company appease them when they were never their demographic to begin with.

Not to mention the guy running this isn't that smart. He calls Giancarlo Volpe the "creator" of Green Lantern: The Animated Series (rather than being a developer, along with Bruce Timm and Jim Krieg...whose development wasn't even the first one, as Weisman and Vietti predated them and I wouldn't be surprised if a team predated Weisman and Vietti), giving him an incredibly basic ignorance of TV production that I'm sure he has because Volpe talked to fans the most. And fans are pretty notoriously stupid, as Ben 10 fandom also thinks Derrick J. Wyatt has all the power in the universe because he's the one who voices his opinion the most (not knocking Wyatt, of course, because he's one of my favorite character designers. But yeah.) Add to the fact that he thinks he can fund an entire season and he's not even smart enough to try just funding a movie or something, and I'd certainly be fine with getting that YJ/Scooby Doo movie, this all just rings of an incredibly stupid person rallying incredibly stupid people for an incredibly stupid goal.

Adam> I don't know, but I think that the Xanadu Beasts are enough to save the species. Why should a certain line of beasts need to be increased? If it's for more variations, I doubt that the beast population will miss any variations.... although Xanadu Beasts tend to resemble Fu Dogs, that doesn't mean they look all like clones of Fu Dog. There are probably also some that go more into the "Scottish" direction with baldness and such. It would be more worth discussing if we had, for example, a dying line of beasts with unique aquatic adaptions.
Or what exactly are you thinking about?

Hi all. Been a while since I have been on here. Based on what happened with Sevarius creating clones of the thylacine, I wonder whether he used actual thylacine DNA or something else to creat them, seeing as the last thylacine died in the 1930's.

This got me thinking as to whether doing something similar might work on Gargoyle beasts. Not to bring them back, but to increase the population of "Scottish stock" beasts. Like make clones of the 4 known Scottish beasts and let them grow at a natural rate. Even though they would probably not bread with any beasts of Scottish stock, they would probably bread with other beasts, thus increasing the beast population.

I don't think Gargoyles would go along with this, but I think it is worth consideration. What do yo think?

http://www.themarysue.com/kickstart-young-justice/

There's a web site trying to "kick start" canceled television shows; one of those shows being Young Justice. Warner Bros. has already rejected the web site's attempt to raise funds for production of a new season of YJ, but they're going ahead with trying to raise the money anyways.

I'm wary about this. I'd like that there's some agreement in place (and who, exactly, has agreed to be involved), like the Veronica Mars Kickstarter, before I'd add my wallet to the cause.

But if this, or another group, earn the blessings of Warner Bros. and have at least some kind of acknowledgement from the key production players (Greg, Brandon, the voice actors, etc.) then they shall have my wallet.

And my axe.
