All the events that happened in the Gargoyles Universe at the same time that the Gathering Convention was happening in real life directly relate to the guests in attendence.
Given that, I'd say the four clans were Manhattan, Labyrinth, London and Mayan.

Masterdramon- My bad. I did not read down far enough on the New Olympian clan page. Typical, I think I have a great question for Greg only to think of it more than a decade to late.
Greg says that in 2001 a crisis will bring together representatives of 4 clans. So which clans do you think they will be? I think that the Manhattan and London clans are a given. I would think that the Ishimura clan would be to, but I think it has been said that they are supposed to be one of the last clans relieved, so they might not be part of this meeting. And I don't know how well recieved the Labyrinth clan will be by other Gargoyle clans. I do think that this crisis will lead to the very beginings of the Gargoyle Nation.

I posted this a few weeks ago, but Greg has stated how he named the Avalon Clan:
Vaevictis Asmadi writes...
Hello Greg,
I have a question about the Avalon Clan. The male gargoyles are generally named after angels, with Gabriel and canon-in-training names like Michael and Raphael, and the female Angela also has an angel-themed name. But as far as I can figure out Gabriel is the only angel name in Christianity that's ever considered female, and Gabriel is already used for a male gargoyle.
So my question is, what sorts of names do most of the Avalon Clan females have? Is there a theme for the female names, like the angel theme for the males? If there is a theme for the female names, what is it? (I'm not asking for individual names because I know you don't want to share those outside of an actual comic.)
Thank you again for answering so many fan questions!
Greg responds...
ALL the eggs (male and female) were named for angels, except for the Beasts, who were named for warriors.

Avalon Clan Names> Keep in mind that the Magus was with them and he had had access for some time to the Grimorum. I imagine given its origins, that the Grimorum probably had references to cultures far beyond Rome and the British Isles. It is entirely plausible that Arabic names, history and spells were part of the Book. So that explains names like Azrael. Ophelia might've been nothing more than a coincidence regarding the Shakespearean link, though I admit Chip's quote is intriguing. Maybe Katharine always wanted to name her daughter Ophelia or something. Makes me wonder if there is a gargoyle named Mary on the island... or a Malcolm or Elena or whatever Tom's father's name was.

One thought about the naming of the Avalon clan that I had is, what if they wanted to be named. Being raised by humans and hearing stories about Goliath in almost a legendary type role., I wonder if they asked to be named by the humans raising them. They might have wondered why Goliath was the only gargoyle to have a name. Just a thought.

Though the notion was originally used to justify their naming the gargoyle beast after a New York feature. Once that was replaced with her being named after an ancient British warrior-queen who lived before the fall of Castle Wyvern, the reluctance lost its "behind-the-scenes" point (avoiding an anachronism).

I'm just talking about the "Avalon" episode memos, posted here on Ask Greg.
http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=181
"You need some reason why Tribeca doesn't already have a name. Maybe, Katharine and Tom had tried not to name any of the gargoyles at first, but it just got too difficult for them with the sentient ones. But they didn't bother to name the Beasts? [We dropped the Tribecca notion eventually, and Tribeca became Boudicca. -GW 5/21/02]"
So the idea was at least proposed at one point. Whether or not it's canon is entirely an open question, but it makes sense to me that they were at least initially resistant.

Personally I think it's possible that all the hatchlings got their names at different times. I mean, I doubt Katharine, Tom, and the Magus sat down one day and came up with 36 names.

Maybe Tom got the name Ophelia from Shakespare, and didn't name Ophelia until then. That would have been in 1600 or so.
Assuming that Ophelia hatched at the same time that Angela did, in 1058... that would be about 540 real-world years, or roughly 22 Avalon-years. And a 22-year-old gargoyle is biologically equivalent to an 11-year-old human.
I don't think that's particularly odd, given that the Manhattan Clan were much older than that when they got their names.

There is a mention, in the "Avalon" production memos, that possibly Katharine, Tom, and the Magus avoided giving the hatchlings names for as long as they could, out of deference to gargoyle tradition.
While obviously not explicitly canon, this makes sense to me, and would certainly explain how some of the Clan's names were derived from "later" periods.
Besides, who in the world said that all the Avalon gargoyles were named at once? Much less right after hatching?

Adam> I have a hypothesis that maybe during one of Tom's trips to see if the Wyvern gargoyles had awakened, Avalon took him to Arabia during the Abbasid or Ottoman dynasties, and he got Azrael and other such angel names from there. (I haven't worked out the math on this, so the eggs might have already been long hatched by the time this would be possible, but who's to say they didn't take a while to find names for all the hatchlings?)

Ok. So, do you think Greg has come up with names for all the members of the Avalon clan? I have done some research on angels to find enough names, and there are (although there is a lack of female names). The only real problem I came across is the amount of angels in Islam and other religions that I don't think 10 century Scotland would have access to.
