I've never been a strong activist when it comes to gay marriage and LGBT rights and some of my peers have criticized me for that. Today I honor their hard work and perseverance. I never actually thought all of this stuff mattered to me too much. If my boyfriend and I get married, we get married. A piece of paper from the government wouldn't change how I feel about it. But I have to admit that with today's announcement I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders that I didn't realize was there. Before today I was, in some respects, a second-class citizen. To finally have the same rights as my brother and sister fills me with great relief and pride. And it helps me to see that, despite my occasional cynicism, we are making progress towards a better world. Sometimes it's two steps forward and one back, but it's progress nevertheless. Pretty cool.

Britain, not England. "England" was founded by the Angles and Saxons after Arthur's reign. (And even geographically, they're not synonymous. "Britain" is the entire island; "England" is just a part of it, the other two parts being Wales and Scotland. And the Arthurian legend is more prominent in Wales and southern Scotland than in most of England - the West Country excepted.)

But I certainly do suspect that Arthur's claims (whenever he gets around to announcing himself to the world) would draw a lot of attention and controversy - all the more so because the scholarly community's is still divided on whether there was a real Arthur or not; many scholars and historians have argued that he was entirely mythical rather than based on a historical figure, though others have supported his being based on a real person with equal firmness. Of course, in the Gargoyles Universe, the discovery of the Scrolls of Merlin and their content would have strengthened the arguments for a "real Arthur", but it would still be a big step from there to accepting that he was still alive.

(Not that it would be a new experience for Arthur; in the legend, even after he'd pulled the Sword out of the Stone, a lot of the nobles were still sceptical about his claims - he had to keep pulling the sword out on each major holiday of the calendar until the citizens of London got fed up, proclaimed their support for him, and forced the lords to back down - and even after that, some of them rebelled against him a few times and had to be defeated in battle.)

I had completely forgotten about the Antarctic Treaty, though one of articles to the treaty states that no nation may claim any form of sovereignty upon it. So I'm curious to see how the world will act when King Arthur decides to position New Camelot there. Actually I'm even more curious on how the world will respond to a man going around proclaiming himself to be the long dead legendary king of England.

ALGERNON - All the more likely since we know that many of the Third Race come from non-European myths and legends (Anansi, Raven, Grandmother, and Coyote, for starters). Of course, Antarctica has no myths and legends of its own, thanks to having no indigenous people - but that wouldn't stop members of the Third Race from visiting it.

Surely "the ends of the Earth" would've existed in people's minds at least. While few, if any, would know about Antarctica, it would qualify as the end of the Earth. In many ways, it still is. As remote and distant as you can get without leaving the planet.

I don't know much about Arthurian legend, but it doesn't strike me as unreasonable that Merlin could've ended up there. And the Crystal Cave just sounds like an ice cave to me. Pardon my ignorance if I'm way off track here.

Greg mentioned once that the South Pole would be one of the places that Arthur and Griff would look for Merlin - presumably after the Stone of Destiny adventure - though what led them to choose that location is as yet unknown. We do know that Arthur and Griff had looked for Merlin in all the obvious places, without success, between the events of "Pendragon" and the Stone of Destiny story, so presumably they began resorting to less likely places afterwards.

Antarctica would be all the more surprising a location to expect to find Merlin, since no one in Britain in the 5th or 6th centuries would have heard of it - it wasn't discovered until the early 19th century, though there were rumors long before that (based more on philosophical speculation than anything else) of a vast southern continent named Terra Australis - but then, this *is* Merlin, who might well be aware of other lands that his contemporaries were unaware of, and would have the resources to reach them.

The bulk of the nations of the world have mutually agreed to leave Antarctica unclaimed and without military presence save for the aforementioned research stations. As such, since New Camelot will be acting on the global stage, a mutually-agreed neutral ground to all would be a good base location to avoid any nationalist claims.

So continuing the Arthurian thread from last week, the wiki says that New Camelot would be founded somewhere in Antarctica. I'm curious how Arthur and the new knights are going to end up at the bottom of the world much less decide to set up shop there considering the only real forms of civilizations there have been research stations.
