I know that Thailog locked up and tried to kill all of his father-figures in "Double Jeopardy", but I thought the only reason why he locked up Elisa too was that she just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time; I didn't think Thailog actually considered her a mother-figure.

Are there any specific examples of Thailog's dialogue that indicate that he considered Elisa or Demona mother-figures? I don't remember any.

Just got finished reading the first chapter of Algernon's first big "Gargoyles" fic.

He said he wasn't sure about linking it here because he felt it would be "self-aggrandising"...so I'm gonna do what any good friend would do, and ignore his wishes! :D

Heck Thailog even has his own Jocasta in the form of Delilah.

I'd say Elisa and Demona count if Janaet Van Dyne counts as Ultron's.

Does Thailog even HAVE a mother figure?

MASTERDRAMON> You know, if any Gargoyles villain lines up with Ultron, at least in terms of psychology and motivation, I'd say it's Thailog. What with his Oedipal obsession with besting his various fathers and lusting after his mother figure.

I had the idea for a story a few years ago based around the consumption of gargoyle eggs; by both humans and gargoyles. The protagonists are canon characters. It'll be fun. I still need to get on it.

The London clan don't have to worry about mating season if they eat the eggs. :/

Chickens eat their own eggs sometimes. Would gargoyles be too intelligent to do that kind of thing? Or maybe they could eat their own eggs BECAUSE they're intelligent.

Inland
Signature: I wonder if gargoyles taste like chicken.

"Ultron was AN inspiration for Coyote... in the sense that we kept bringing the robot back and numbering each new incarnation, but I think that's where the inspiration ended. They don't have much else in common."

"Not very similar at all, I think.

The one thing I 'homaged' was the whole numbering system, though we modernized the idea into computer style upgrades.

Ultron is an influence, obviously, but I think the differences between the two, both in terms of goal and style speak for themselves."

Just to set the record straight.

But for the record, if I had to hazard a guess as to what first leads Coyote to deviate from its programmed loyalty, I think it'll likely involve magic in some way.

Science + sorcery is consistently depicted as a potent and unpredictable combination in the Gargoyles Universe, and there's already precedent with Coyote itself - see v4.0, with the iron of the Cauldron of Life melted down into its chassis.

According to the wiki Coyote was inspired by Ultron and that got me thinking if Coyote's own turn would be similar to what was done with Ultron in Earth's Mightiest Heroes. In order to combat Kang's armies Hank Pym programmed the concept of violence into his Ultron robots, because of that this led to Ultron's plan to destroy the Avengers and cause a global extinction.

My point is that perhaps because Coyote was programmed for vengeance this trait would ultimately become the reason why he would no longer take orders from Xanatos.

ALGERNON - The "omelette" remark got me wondering what gargoyles must think of egg-based recipes, given that they're egg-layers. Of course, those eggs wouldn't be from gargoyles but from birds, but still - would it seem too close to home to eat eggs, from their perspective?

MATT> Gee, thanks for planting that image in my head. :P

SAMUEL> Omelette, anyone?

Okay serious answer. One option, depending on how paranoid the London Clan are, is stick the unfertilized eggs in some kinda decoy rookery on the off chance any enemies of the clan somehow gain access to Knight's Spur.

I assume eye colour for non-force grown gargs would default back to male/white, female/red, regardless of whether their biological parents were clones or not. My understanding is that force-growth doesn't alter the DNA itself, but I'll defer to those who are more versed in such thing.

Hi, guys! It's been a long time. I just started re-watching the series with my boyfriend (for whom it is mostly new) and it got the old juices flowing. I was thinking about the reproductive cycles of gargoyles and a few questions popped up in my mind. I checked the archives, but didn't see an exact answer for them.

So, in the case of the London Clan, in which females are isolated during their third and final heat, do they lay an unfertilized egg? If so, what do they do with them?

If a gargoyle who was force grown (ex: Delilah) produces offspring who ages normally, do the females' eyes glow white or do they glow red? (same question for males, obviously) If a force-grown gargoyle mates with a naturally aged gargoyle (ex: Burbank and Angela), would the offspring (aged normally) have discolored eyes? Would it be a recessive/dominant trait?

I hope all is well! It's great to see you guys still chatting about it all.

Now, now... Language.

Maybe Coyote and Hyena finally "make sparks fly" and the experience transfers a little of Hyena's brand of crazy into Coyote's circuits. Coyote's existing programming with an added dash of psychopath might lead him to want world domination...

ALGERNON - I wonder whether it was just the Pack that Coyote was playing to when he was pretending to be a revenge-driven Xanatos. Remember that the audience is used enough to villains in animated adventure series being motivated by revenge that it would be expecting that of Xanatos - and then get the big surprise when we learn at the end of that episode that he simply isn't interested in it.

This was addressed on ASK GREG:

TODD> Indeed, Coyote's always displayed something of a vengeful streak, remember Leader of The Pack when he was ranting to the rest of the Pack about "punishing" the Manhattan Clan for throwing "him" in prison?

Granted, that was probably just Xanatos playing to the Pack's general sensibilities but it's a neat little bit of foreshadowing.

PAUL - Good take on why Xanatos would have Coyote "programmed for vengeance". It seemed odd to me, given Xanatos's view of revenge as pointless and impractical - but if part of it might be to ensure some limitations on Coyote to keep him from becoming another "servant who replaces his master", that makes sense.

I'm not sure that it's fair to say that Xanatos "keeps" making monsters that betray him, since the only betrayal that really hurt Xanatos was Thailog's. (Sure, Goliath and his clan ended up turning against Xanatos, as did Derek and the mutates, but Xanatos seemed to write their defection off as a much more acceptable loss than Thailog's.)

I would guess that he views Coyote with the same eye that he viewed Thailog, and would take pains not to make the same mistakes with Coyote that he made with Thailog. (Programming Coyote to have a different view of vengeance from Xanatos' own was a good start, in my opinion.)

Can someone refer to me where I can find information as to Gargoyles eye colors? Like why they're black and not colored.

I wondered if Coyote's programming would conflict with his orders. Specifically, Coyote is "programmed for vengeance." I'm not sure why he was programmed that way, but it's there. Xanatos, on the other hand, is at least trying to bury the hatchet- he'll pursue his goals even if the gargoyles don't like it, but in The Rock he at least tried to keep them out of the way. If we follow this track a little further, I can see a situation where Xanatos orders Coyote not to pursue his grudges and Coyote's programming is too strong to resist. Since everyone still in the Pack has a grudge against the gargoyles, that could lead to them forming up. That only gives the initial spark, though; he still needs some development to became an independent threat. Up until now he's always just been a tool, and it's hard to say what kind of plans he would hatch on his own, and how they would differ from Xanatos or Thailog. Thailog's a particularly good model- Xanatos keeps making monsters that betray him.
Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

My initial thought was that Xanatos might decide that Coyote was more useful to him with free will than without, but he already made that mistake with Thailog, and he doesn't strike me as the sort of person who would make the same mistake twice.
Paul - [nampahcfluap at yahoo dot com]

TODD> Life's about the journey, man. Don't sweat the destination. :P

So here's a thought.

We know at some point Coyote's gonna cut his strings and try to go solo. I can't recall whether Greg ever said this happens before or after Coyote 6.0 forms the Ultra-Pack, but by 2198, Coyote-X is merrily plotting world, if not galactic, domination.

We also know, Coyote 5.0 is not "programmed for free will" much to Coldsteel's disappointment. Which begs the question...

What eventually pushes him past that final threshold? Does he simply upgrade to the point where like virtually all fictional robots he's eventually smart enough to ask why he's taking orders from a "meat-bag"? Does ColdSteel or some other third party decide to help him unlock his potential?
