Comments for the week ending April 24, 2016

We don't know exactly when Shakespeare was born. We know he was baptized on April 26, 1564, and it was customary to baptize babies about two or three days after they were born. The notion that his birthday was April 23 became popular because it was also St. George's Day, and it seemed so appropriate for Shakespeare to share his birthday with the feast-day of the patron saint of England.

Kept the Bard's 400th deathday (which is traditionally also his birthday too, right?) pretty low key -- popped in my copy of Shakespeare in Love . . . of course, I should probably throw in some Gargoyles episodes in too before the night is done d:

I don't know why I wrote that it was his birthday instead of his death date, I guess that sort of thing happens when you post something at two in the morning.

Google's put up its tribute to Shakespeare today, with a cartoonish picture of the Bard surrounded by some of the best-known elements of his plays. Hamlet (holding Yorick's skull), Julius Caesar about to be assassinated, the handkerchief from "Othello", Romeo and Juliet, a ship on stormy seas (obviously "The Tempest"), the witches from "Macbeth", Bottom with his donkey head, and a haunted-looking king (probably Henry IV in his "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown" moment).

Huh, there should've been a change in the signature from my last post.

Speaking of old Bill Shakespeare, today marks his 400th birthday. As such I'm changing my signature to one of my favorite Shakespeare quotes.

Green Lantern's Nightlight: Read the post you just linked to again.

He says Wally's speed is about equivalent to Jay's, both of whom are slower than the Allen family.

ALGERNON - Yes, I already mentioned that business about Shakespeare and Macbeth.

Technically, Wally isn't as fast as Barry, so he wouldn't have the exact same powers. I think Greg may have got a bit forgetful there. I say this because Wally's lack of speed compared to Barry and Impulse cost him.

I've sometimes wondered if Greg would have ever dared bring Shakespeare on-stage in "Gargoyles". Flashback is one possibility (especially in light of his idea of Shakespeare and Macbeth being friends); Brooklyn dropping in on him during "Timedancer" is another.

They saved Shakespeare's Brain

Actually wonder if Greg might end up adapting that for a story at somepoint?

Welcome to my house! Enter freely. Go safely, and leave something of the happiness you bring.

I should have mentioned this sooner, but on Tuesday evening, PBS ran a documentary about Shakespeare's grave, which included a story (maybe fictional, based on truth) about someone making off with Shakespeare's skull in the 19th century. I wonder if that was the same as the "skull-stealing" incident that was brought up here a few weeks ago. (And, yes, while discussing that story, they had someone recite the "Alas, poor Yorick" speech.)

Todd> Actually, your omission is interesting and somewhat appropriate, unlike Vinnie's skipping of the High Priestess. The eighth card in the Major Arcana is variant. Traditionally, Justice was the eighth, but the Rider-Waite-Smith deck swapped it with Strength to increase the connection to the constellations of the astrological zodiac (which associated the eighth card with Leo and the eleventh with Libra).

So you could have been this...

Todd> I actually would've added my own thing, but I didn't want to upset the countdown for what had been likened by a few people. I think it would've been finished by the end of the week -- the entire week's comments would probably just be about the countdown.

Eighth.

Sorry for not following this week's theme, but I don't know enough about Tarot cards to know what No. 8 would be, and after seeing no new posts for a day, felt I'd better help the countdown along so that we could (maybe) finish it before the end of the week.
