Of course; Vergil wrote the Aeneid long before the Internet existed.

Interestingly enough Neil Gaiman and Stephen King have written fanfiction in the past, the concept of fanfics existed before the internet was even invented.

Todd & Masterdramon> At the point of profitable publication, I think it tends to be called pastiche rather than fanfiction.

Todd: I'd certainly say it is.
The only real difference is that you can make money off of public-domain fanfic.

I wonder if it counts as fanfic if it's based on a story in the public domain (as both Homer and Shakespeare are).

Well, the Aeneid was pretty much Homer fanfic, wasn't it?

TODD> It just amuses and emboldens my faith in humanity that 19th century Shakespearean fanfic exists. God bless 'em.

A couple of Shakespearean tidbits, one which has something (loosely) to do with "Gargoyles", the other which doesn't but which I think is still kind of neat.
1. A few years ago, they aired a program called "The Hollow Crown" that adapted Shakespeare's second tetralogy of history plays ("Richard II", "Henry IV" Parts One and Two - the ones featuring Falstaff and his gang, and "Henry V") into a historical drama - and a good one, too. (PBS aired it on "Great Performances".) Now they've come out with the sequel that I had hoped they'd make but hadn't seriously expected - an adaptation of the first tetralogy (the "Henry VI" plays and "Richard III"). I don't know when it'll air on PBS, but it's supposed to come out on DVD later this month, and should be worth watching. (They're apparently compressing the first two "Henry VI" plays into a single play - probably to play down Shakespeare's unflattering depiction of Joan of Arc - the one that inspired me to imagine Joan in the Gargoyles Universe being an unwitting pawn of Demona.)
2. In the 19th century, a woman named Mary Cowden Clarke wrote "The Girlhood of Shakespeare's Heroines", a set of what you might call Shakespeare fanfic prequels for many of the major female characters in Shakespeare's works. One of them was Lady Macbeth; Clarke's story of her youth (from her birth up to her learning about her husband's encounter with the Weird Sisters) called her "Gruoch" (as per history and "City of Stone"), and also had her being keen on the story claiming that Finella (her name spelled "Fenella" here) killed Kenneth II (a tale found in the Scottish chronicles - which, in "Gargoyles", was presented as Constantine's cover-up tale framing her for the murder). No mention of Gillecomgain or Lulach, though.
