Comments for the week ending August 4, 2019

You know what made me happiest? The ending, where
Terra, for the first time in all the adaptations I can remember, starts having qualms about working for Slade and acts on them BEFORE everything is on fire and the tower is in ruins. Her little smile at the end, hopefully looking out at the city as the music swells... gosh, that was nice. Especially since, if I'm reading it right, her turning on him isn't because of romantic interest in someone, but because of her positive platonic/familial relationships with Artemis and Halo (and probably Brion, but that relationship wasn't emphasized so much this week.) Business as usual

It's a very special episode this time for Season 3, episode 20 "Quiet Conversations"
Well I guessed right and Halo did run away. Didn't see her heading to Qurac though. It's been pretty consistent of her to try and leave her old host's life behind even before learning of Gabrielle's part in the assassination. I have wondered whether that was because she didn't want to relive the trauma that Gabrielle experienced rather than her insistence that she was an entirely different person. But Forager's comments about how the Mother Box's soul must've gone back to the Source does bring to mind my own theory that Halo's situation is that she's actually a blend of two souls rather than one possessing another body. And why she felt it was necessary to go back home one last time.
It also makes wonder about Dolphin and why she didn't want to give her old name, we know that the Light and their cohorts have a history of kidnapping runaways and other strays. We don't know much about her but it does sound like she wasn't in a hurry to go back to her old life. If she even could.

I was glad that she wanted to provide some closure to Gabrielle's family and I am glad that they put in some realism in there, that Gabrielle's family wasn't going to brush off the fact that something else basically took control of her body. And while Gabrielle's mother may have thanked her for providing that closure I can't help but think that she looks just numb to everything that's happened to her and once the fact that all of her immediate family is dead sets in well...That's a harshness no one should go through.

Speaking of harshness no one should go through, there's the part with M'Gann and Harper. You know, when I heard that Young Justice would be taking a more Rated-R approach in storytelling I was worried that they would fall into the same trap the recent DC animated movies did. Which was to make everything dark and edgy and forget that that doesn't equal maturity. So I'm glad that they decided to use this opportunity to talk about abuse in a realistic manner (MAJOR kudos to Greg and the team for including the abuse hotline). And that I think was the big theme of this episode, the uncomfortable conversations that need to be said no matter how much it hurts one another. Whether it's Halo and her host's family, Harper and the abuse she and her brother receive , Kaldur and Dolphin and finally Vic and his father. I think Vic voicing his grievances and Silas having to stand there and take it was pretty well done. Much better than it was done with Brion and Nightwing in "Another Freak."

I thought that Halo's last purge on Vic was just a little too convenient and wouldn't you know it? The Father Box switched tactics and started transforming his body rather than his mind. I think we have probably seen the full extent of his cyborgization and I'm glad that it retains his basic body shape rather than the bulkiness from the comics and Teen Titans show. It just never made sense to me that he would keep his larger more robotic look when sleeker or even more human prostheses exist within the comics.

So we got a proper episode introduction of Kaldur's parents, and official confirmation of his sexuality. I had to check but it turns out that's Wyynde was one of the Atlantean Purifiers in the comics. Interesting. I know that a lot has changed from Season 1, but I do hope we get an explanation on his own road to redemption. Might parallel with Tara who I'm beginning to expect won't go through with her betrayal willingly.

One more thing. So I mentioned that I got to meet up with Pil LaMarr at the WonderCon where he let slip that he'd be returning for Season 3 even though that wasn't publically known at the time. Well it was nice to see his return as Orin not to mention his rather nice take on Metron and Calvin.

Some final notes: loved how they designed the Source Wall, it's that true embrace of Jack Kirby's designs that gives the New Gods that feel truly unique to other aliens. Interesting that Dr. Jace would claim that her conversation with Halo was casual, she may be waiting for Halo to break the news of her dying. But I'm still suspicious. Aquaman slinging some unintentional guilt at Kaldur, who I think after everything from Season 2 is becoming more uncomfortable with the Anti-Light's work. So now Desaad and Granny have the final pieces for that machine from "Influence" that can't be good. And you just know Metron was being purposefully vague to the team after what happened to him.
Second review and analysis for Gargoyles is going to be a little late, I've been interviewing lately and that's taken a lot of my mind from other things.
