In October, someone came out with a set of light-hearted "Gargoyles" mini-fan-fics - 31 in all, one a day - about various "loose ends" in the show of that kind; a few were on where the gargoyles were getting their food during their time at the clock tower. (One of their methods in those fics was having Bronx hunt down rats and pigeons, as the most likely "game animals" to be found in Manhattan.)

It also dealt with such matters as "Shouldn't the gargoyles have been speaking Gaelic rather than English?" (Xanatos responds to that "what-if" in a very Xanatosian fashion), "How does Elisa explain all those guns of hers that keep getting destroyed?", and even "What if the Humility Spell came with its own 'ending terms', like the Magus' curse on the gargoyles and Demona's 'stone at night' spell, that could be fulfilled by modern technology?" - resulting in an embarrassing situation for the Manhattan clan after Xanatos Enterprises' latest big achievement.

Rewatched "Outfoxed" this afternoon - but I'm saving my comments on it for tomorrow, after the room clears.

I don't know if you are aware, but in the "Early Warning" episode of Whelmed: The Young Justice Files the host quoted you on something you told him in conversation. This is something that used to happen now and then, but lately it happens in almost every episode: "Greg texted me this", "Brandon emailed me that", "Greg/Brandon told me whatever", etc.

So, looking at your 2-year backlog of 2000 questions, I'm wondering: why are you giving BTS information to this one person while the rest of your fanbase has to submit questions and wait months (at least) or YEARS (worst case and more likely scenario) for an answer???? It must be really cool to be so intimate and chummy with one's idol, and I bet the host feels super important and validated, but this is some double standard bullshit!

Are you aware of this? And if you are, how can you be okay with it? Don't you think this is unfair? You have thousands of fans who support your work whichever way they can, but 99.9% of them have never even met you in person, let alone exchanged emails or text messages with you.

If I make an entire podcast dedicated to kissing your asses, will I earn the same privileges? Will I be able to ask all my questions without a waiting queue? Will I get to hang out with you, have lunch together or exchange personal contacts?

Another thing I just noticed while watching Deadly Force is that Elisa’s apartment is next door to a hospital. I’d always wondered how Chavez explained Elisa getting shot in her apartment and found at the hospital. If it’s that close, though, you could imagine a neighbor heard the shot and came to check on her, then carried her down to the street. Of course, that raises the question of why the neighbor didn’t call 911, but there are any number of reasons why they wouldn’t want to get involved with the police.

Yeah, I could see that. The Illuminati could direct the National Guard to set up checkpoints at all the bridges and tunnels into Manhattan and maybe say there was a disease outbreak so the island had to be quarantined.

I’d be reluctant to ask Greg about this (even if Garfield Logan’s biggest fan hadn’t flooded the queue) because I worry it’s come off as nitpicking, like I was trying to prove I was smarter than the show. So I tend to just let those things slide or make up my own explanations when it’s not something essential to the storytelling. Heck, I’m still not sure how they keep their fridge stocked- certainly not on Elisa’s cop salary.

As much as I love City of Stone, it’s tough to ignore the one big thing that makes no sense. Namely, New York City is not isolated from the rest of the world. They broadcast dozens of TV shows every night. If all contact with NYC abruptly cut off, the National Guard would be there to investigate within the hour. Most of the time I can mentally fill in plot holes, but I can’t square this circle.

ALGAE - From my experiences with my own cats, I'd have to agree with you.

Obviously, not all the animals got petrified by Demona's broadcast; we know Gillie (Jeffrey Robbins' dog) didn't, and there were a few birds flying about and perching on the humans-turned-to-stone. Which reminds me of one dark creativity demon I've had recently, inspired by "Zork Zero". Demona, to provide herself with some variety from smashing the stone humans with her mace or laser cannon, gets the pigeons in New York to gather together and relieve themselves on the statues in enough quantities that the weight of their droppings crush those same statues. (Yes, a far-fetched notion, I'll agree.)

One other thing I forgot to mention. When Elisa was looking at Demona's broadcast in her apartment, Cagney was staring at the television screen as well. I wonder if the cat wound up petrified as well, or if he lost interest and looked away before he saw enough of the loop to be affected. (At least there couldn't have been any permanent harm, since we've seen Cagney in later episodes, all the way down to "The Journey".)

Rewatched "City of Stone" on DVD today - all four episodes. A few things that stood out to me this time around:

The leader of the terrorists/bank robbers at the start of Part One was armed with a laser gun-type weapon; I wondered this time if it was one of the ones that Dracon stole from Xanatos back in "Deadly Force" and had sold off before Goliath and Broadway defeated him and destroyed the remaining weaponry.

Xanatos makes the second allusion to Launchpad's "Any landing you can walk away from..." line in the series; Lexington delivered the first one in "Her Brother's Keeper".

In the opening flashback scene of Part Two, Demona and Gillecomgain are doing battle near what looks like a recent battlefield, with weapons and shields littering the ground. I wonder who those belonged to - no sign of anyone other than Demona and Gillecomgain at the scene.

I wonder how many people watching "City of Stone" nowadays might be reminded of the "DuckTales" reboot when they hear Selene's name (assuming they've seen the "DuckTales" reboot, that is).

Gillecomgain addresses Demona as a monster and a creature - though not a beast. One of the granary guards in Part One, though, calls her and her clan "Filthy beasts!"

The lady who escaped being turned to stone because she doesn't watch television looked a lot like the lady who worked at the Diamond Exchange in "Her Brother's Keeper", though I don't know if they're meant to be the same. (The infamous statues Demona smashed who resembled Brendan and Margot would argue against making assumptions.)

The "breastplate gargoyle" says, after Demona's clan has to flee their former cave because Duncan found them there, "The hunting there was good". A rare occasion of the gargoyles being the hunters rather than the hunted.

One detail that I'm amazed I didn't spot before: after Duncan's death, Demona is bearing the Hunter's mask at her belt as a trophy - until the young Canmore grabs it from her during his attack upon her.

We know already how Greg Weisman had Macbeth's coronation redone in "Clan-Building" as an outdoor ceremony, rather than in a castle's hall; I noticed, also that the Stone of Destiny he's standing on looks different from the Stone as depicted in "Pendragon" and "Clan-Building". More like a long flat stone than the great block.

Demona's clan uses nets twice in battle, once against the granary guards in Part One, one against Canmore's army in Part Four. (The location of these events gives them a "bookends" quality.)

Demona calls Bronx "my pet". I'll have to look it up, but recall Greg once saying that gargoyles don't actually look upon gargoyle beasts as pets. Maybe another sign that Demona thinks more like a human than she's willing to admit?

I like the touch of the various Scottish kings being called "High King of Scotland"; it gives the sense of Scotland being a recently-unified collection of various smaller domains (which matches the 11th century setting).

Demona talks at the end a lot about revenge - and I think that it makes sense that this is her true goal, not mere survival. All the more so given that, at this point, as far as the audience knows, there are only seven gargoyles left - and her scheme's about to dispose of six of those seven gargoyles. Even if all the humans were to disappear from the face of the earth, it would come too late to save the species from extinction (we later learn that there are more gargoyles out there and that their numbers haven't really dropped so dangerously low, but we don't know this at the time "City of Stone" first aired). Revenge is the only "reasonable" motivation for her actions (if you consider revenge reasonable).

The petrified New Yorkers at street level seem to get freed from Demona's spell later than Elisa and Owen, even though the spell should be logically dissolved for all of them at the same time; this might be mere storytelling convenience.

Rewatched "Vows" today. A few fresh thoughts on it that occurred to me while I watched it.

When Xanatos described the mysterious gift of the old coin as "ancient history", I thought, "well, more medieval history".

From the way Goliath spoke the words "my angel of the night" to Demona at Prince Malcolm's wedding, I wondered if that was the occasion when he came up with that nickname (or whatever the right term is) for her. (Given what a big moment it was for them both, it'd certainly have been fitting.)

The Archmage shows a lack of prudence in throwing a skull with a lit candle on it around his laboratory; he was fortunate that it didn't start a fire when it landed next to the Grimorum.

This time, as the Norman ambassador headed off with Xanatos's letter to the Illuminati, I found myself wondering how his departure must have looked to Prince Malcolm and his household. He escorts Malcolm's future bride to the castle, and then, instead of staying for the ceremony to be held that very night (as might have been expected of him, given that he'd presumably have been serving as her father's representative), abruptly rides off. (Presumably it didn't cause a diplomatic incident between Scotland and Normandy.)

The Archmage calls Demona "you stupid beast!", continuing that sad trend among so many human characters that I've been keeping track of this time around.

Brooklyn is the gargoyle most vocal about going out to look for Goliath at the end; I wonder if it's because they knew Demona would be at the wedding. He'd be the one most likely to react to that.

It's a pity they used the original ending on the DVD, the one that made it look as if Goliath and Demona were breaking apart the Phoenix Gate once more at the clock tower, rather than Goliath remembering the original occasion. I hope the Disney + version is using the corrected ending. (It's one of two things I miss from my old "Gargoyles" VCR tapes - the other is those "Gargoyles will return/and now back to Gargoyles" moments, some of which I found appealing - especially the almost CGI image of Goliath leaping off his perch in the middle of a thunderstorm.)

Quickly going to back to solar eclipses, given how in tune a gargoyle is with the Earth's day-night cycle, I figured a temporary event like a solar eclipse (partial, total, what-have-you) wouldn't have the same effect as dawn/dusk. But those are some curious possibilities that Matt earlier posted -- I'm definitely now liking effects possibly ranging in the mental/psychological as opposed to/in addition to the physical. Perhaps bad/trippy dreams in addition to feeling unrested . . .

I got a look at the twitter/hashtag site that Masterdramon posted a link to; it's great to see such enthusiasm for the show - including posts by familiar figures like Bishansky and Patrick Toman. As well as new material (I was amused by the fanart that showed Goliath giving a ride to Cricket and Tilly from "Big City Greens"). And some of the posters have been introducing their kids to "Gargoyles", which is especially great news - it's not just those who originally watched the series who're watching it now.

Watched "Eye of the Beholder" on DVD today. I didn't find as much new to note about it as with other episodes, but it was still enjoyable (even if it feels a bit odd watching a Halloween episode almost two weeks later) - the usual highlights like Goliath and Elisa's "Beauty and the Beast" dance and Xanatos revealing his vulnerable side.

The scene where Goliath was reading about werewolves reminded me of a project that Michael Reaves (one of the major writers for "Gargoyles") has been working on for some years, an intended animated series called "Guardians of Luna" about a small group of werewolves defending their home city (with the evocative name of Steelhenge). The glimpses released of it suggest a strong echo of "Gargoyles" (it's even taking place a thousand years after the werewolves suffered a horrible defeat), though with some differences (the werewolf leads, for example, being weres, get human lives as well as "wolf" lives). Unfortunately, it seems to be in the middle of development snarls, so I don't know when it'll be coming out.

Xanatos places his hand on Goliath's shoulder when begging for his help at the castle - thus providing an occasion for him to plant another bug. (Again, I'm glad that they took care to include such a moment.)

I'm glad Gargoyles is seemed to be doing well on Disney + and Trending on Twitter, I have to wait til March 31st to watch Gargoyles. I just hope that Gargoyles will be on the UK version of Disney +, Gargoyles hasn't aired in the UK since the 90s and the DVD's were never released here either, so fingers crossed.

Also watched "The Silver Falcon" on DVD. New impressions:

One line of Broadway dates this episode: the mention that Brooklyn and Lexington "have dibs on the VCR". How many of us remember VCRs, and how many of us have all but forgotten them amid DVDs and Blu-Rays?

Elisa's description of Broadway as "playing out a movie fantasy", while aimed immediately at his interest in the "film noir"-style detective movie he'd been watching, also echoes "Deadly Force"; fortunately, this time around, it doesn't lead to as much trouble.

Broadway and Elisa's arrival at the remains of the Silver Falcon nightclub and dealing with the lock are a strong echo of Matt's arrival at the start. Also, both Broadway and Elisa say "I've had better nights".

Besides the obvious callbacks to "Deadly Force" (Dracon returns - plus Elisa's "movie fantasy" line I mentioned above) and "The Edge" (Matt's pursuit of the Illuminati), we get a continuation of "A Lighthouse in the Sea of Time" as Broadway shows he's been taking reading lessons. The word "right" gives him some trouble, naturally - I'm going to be looking through whatever books on the history of the English language I can find to learn how so many words that sound like "ite" are written "ight" (right, sight, tight, fight, bright, night, knight, slight, flight, etc.) - but he manages it and correctly figures out what it means. In "Lighthouse", he'd learned one reason for the value of reading: the ability to take you to distant places and times. Now he also sees how it can be used to learn valuable information.

I'm pretty sure I'll be subscribing to Disney+, though we have not pulled the trigger yet. All the Marvel content, "The Mandalorian" show, and of course Gargoyles, is enough to warrant my dollars. I'll be binging Gargoyles for sure as I have not watched the actual episodes in years. It'll be good to see them again. Does anyone know if the new Ducktales series will be on Disney+? I'm very interested in watching that show, but have not had an easy way to keep on it.

Solar Eclipses> At first thought, you'd think that solar eclipses wouldn't have any effect on a gargoyle. They turn to stone whether the sun is visible or not. Cloud cover of being underground or indoors doesn't affect stone sleep, so why should the moon getting in the way matter? Still, sleeping underground for extended periods does have an effect on them according to Greg, and we know that their sleeping/waking adjusts with seasonal changes in daylight and when moved across time zones... so that makes me think that a solar eclipse could have some effect on a gargoyle. There are lots of possibilities there. Maybe during the eclipse, the gargoyle doesn't wake up, but just becomes conscious. Like being awake, but paralyzed. Or maybe they do wake up only to turn back to stone minutes later and find themselves completely unrested the next night. Or maybe they don't wake up, but it effects them the following night in some way. All interesting possibilities...

Your mention of lunar eclipses reminds me of Greg's speculation on what effects a solar eclipse might have on stone sleep.

Considering I was already paying for Hulu, I've been waiting and finally got the Disney+ bundle. No time to watch yet, but I quickly added Gargoyles to my 'To Watch' list.

Forgot to mention this, but also out today is Greg Weisman's second Magic: The Gathering novel, War of the Spark: Forsaken. :)

Random: Did anyone observe/enjoy the Mercury Transit yesterday?? Having missed the one in 2016, I was definitely keen on catching this one before the next event in 2032. (Solar Transits likely wouldn't excite many a gargoyle, even though other celestial events, like lunar eclipses might have piqued their interests).

I wonder which ending of "Vows" they'll be using. The one defect of the DVD version of "Gargoyles" is that it uses the original ending (which made it look as if Goliath and Demona get back together in the present - which is the reverse of the ending) rather than the revised ending (Goliath and Demona splitting the Phoenix Gate in 975, then receding into the pasts of memory). I hope the Disney + version uses the latter ending.

Can confirm! Disney Plus contains the uncut and uncensored Gargoyles! Not the Toon Disney/Disney XD edits.

The show hasn't aired in this format since the mid nineties, and was only available this way on DVD. So we've always seen a show on toon Disney or Disney XD, you have never seen the uncut show.

MASTERDRAMON - Yep. Great to find another fan here. (The webcomic shares with "Gargoyles" a strong interest in world mythology, by the way - including Coyote as a major character. It also featured its own "revisionist" take on the story of Theseus and the Minotaur, though much more humorous than Taurus's mention of it in "The New Olympians".)

And that's great advice on spreading the word on "Gargoyles", too.

Tonight's the Beaver Moon, the full moon just after the Hunter's Moon - which suggests the possibility of the gargoyles having problems with beavers of some sort. Maybe giant mutated beavers turned out by Sevarius who're producing flooding by their idea of where to build a dam. Or another "lost Avalon World Tour" story set in Wales and featuring an addanc (a mythical Welsh water-monster which has sometimes been depicted as a monstrous beaver).

Jordan: We should be looking at anyone who says "What's Gargoyles?" as an opportunity, not a disappointment. ;P

Fact is, the show's 25 years old now. A good number of young geeks/nerds/lit buffs who may well be the perfect audience for it have never heard of the thing.

Anyone saying "What's Gargoyles?" should be directed straight to the DVDs and/or Disney+. The fandom needs as much new blood as possible if a revival is ever to take place; it can't just coast purely on the nostalgia of 30-somethings who saw it in the initial run.

JURGAN - It might cheer you up to know that, some months ago, one of the webcomics I follow had a scene where a crazed wolf-god was attacking a weird high-tech city and the robots in that city generated a force field to keep him out. The wolf-god pounding his fists upon the force field reminded me of Oberon's assault on the Eyrie Building in "The Gathering", and when I mentioned that in the webcomic's forum, a few people there recalled "Gargoyles" fondly; one of them spoke in particular praise of Owen's line "Energy is energy, whether generated by science or by sorcery". (A bit later on, the webcomic revealed that the force field only extended to ground level, which reminded me of "The Gathering" again.)

And Xanatos is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Bar Harbor.

As for me, I've already pre-paid for the first year of Disney+ and look forward to checking out fully in a couple days. I'm a certified streaming junkie, as between stuff I pay for myself and accounts I bum off of friends/relatives, I currently utilize Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, FUNimation Now, VRV, and DC Universe.

Once Warner Bros. launches HBO Max next year, I should be able to cut traditional cable out of my life completely - which given the ridiculous cost increases that Spectrum (ironically also a WB subsidiary) keeps implementing, is a day I look forward to greatly.

My father tied my downstairs box to his Netflix account when he was briefly housesitting (had a repairman coming while I was at work). As such, if I ever do get my own streaming service, it'll probably be Disney+ given all the stuff that it includes. I'm still on fairly affordable cable TV, though; until that changes - and certain shows I enjoy become same-time streamable - I doubt I'll switch (though it certainly won't stop me from telling anyone I know who DOES have Disney+ to binge and loop Gargoyles).

Like Matthew, I'll have to pass on the Disney + account, at least for now. Fortunately, I've all the first two seasons of "Gargoyles" on DVD, and as for the "Goliath Chronicles", I can certainly get along without them. (That's only the "Gargoyles" content, of course; I'm interested in the live-action remake of "The Sword in the Stone", which will be streaming on that rather than appearing in theatres, but I can wait.)

A thought inspired by "The Mirror". One of the funniest moments in that episode (well, there's a lot of competition for funniest moments in that episode) was the New Yorkers-turned gargoyles fleeing from the clan-turned-human, screaming "Humans!" (Made all the funnier by Hudson turning to Goliath and saying "Are you sure this is a good idea?" - especially thanks to Ed Asner's dry delivery of that line.) But I recently thought there might be a more serious angle to it.

I've recently read a series of humorous mystery/fantasy books called "Warlock Holmes", a take-off of Sherlock Holmes, in which the AU Holmes of the title is a not-too-bright but extremely powerful sorcerer, with a stronger fantasy tinge to his adventures. In this setting, Inspectors Lestrade and Gregson are a vampire and an ogre respectively. Dr. Watson, in his first encounter with them, nonplussed at interacting with beings he'd always assumed to be mythical, asks what he can do, since he's "only a man". Lestrade and Gregson are both indignant at that remark, Lestrade pointing out (after having to calm down his outraged partner with a tone of "He doesn't realize!") that humans are the dominant species on the planet, cities everywhere, filled with humans, while there are barely any ogres or vampires left - he and his partner are the only members of their kind that Watson has ever met, is every likely to meet - not to mention that their colleagues at Scotland Yard aren't too keen on them because of their nature. Thus, from their point of view "only a man" is offensive - certainly failing to realize the reality of human/mythical creature interactions.

The gargoyles offer a similar case, in their universe: humans are the ones who are everywhere, numbered in the billions, while there are just a few gargoyles left, in hiding. (Especially from the perspective of "The Mirror", where, at this point, as far as the audience knows, there are only seven gargoyles left - eight if you count Coldstone.) Not to mention that the humans not only vastly outnumber the gargoyles, but could easily dispose of them during the day and have all the tools and weapons for that.

So maybe indeed it's the "monsters" who should be scared of us.

Hi Mr. Weisman. I have a question for you:

I don't know if you are aware, but in the "Early Warning" episode of Whelmed: The Young Justice Files the host quoted you on something you told him in conversation. This is something that used to happen now and then, but lately it happens in almost every episode: "Greg texted me this", "Brandon emailed me that", "Greg/Brandon told me whatever", etc.

So, looking at your 2-year backlog of 2000 questions, I'm wondering: why are you giving BTS information to this one person while the rest of your fanbase has to submit questions and wait months (at least) or YEARS (worst case and more likely scenario) for an answer???? It must be really cool to be so intimate and chummy with one's idol, and I bet the host feels super important and validated, but this is some double standard bullshit!

Are you aware of this? And if you are, how can you be okay with it? Don't you think this is unfair? You have thousands of fans who support your work whichever way they can, but 99.9% of them have never even met you in person, let alone exchanged emails or text messages with you.

If I make an entire podcast dedicated to kissing your asses, will I earn the same privileges? Will I be able to ask all my questions without a waiting queue? Will I get to hang out with you, have lunch together or exchange personal contacts?

(Originally I posted this on AskGreg, but then I decided I shouldn't have to wait 2 years for an answer, for all the reasons above.)
