I'd always taken it for granted that "Vandal" was simply a corruption of the name "Vandar." I don't recall any good explanation in the comics for how he chose his oddly redundant moniker.

There might have been some odd bit of the New 52, with him picking up the name while being a wandering mercenary during Arthurian times, which, I assume, must have happened shortishly after he was done being Attila. And I also tend to assume the YJ version of Vandal was around for some of Arthuriana, just since his gimmick so far is he was around for all the memorable bits of history.

The Vandal sack of Rome took place a couple of years after Attila died, in actual history (Attila died in 453; the Vandals sacked Rome in 455). In Earth-16, therefore, Vandal Savage would have abandoned his "Attila" identity a couple of years before (incidentally, it is recorded that the people who dug Attila's grave were afterwards put to death - Vandal Savage's way of covering up his tracks? The same fate is said to have befallen those who dug Genghis Khan's grave over seven hundred years later, and we know that in Earth-16, Genghis Khan was another of Vandal Savage's past identities; apparently he repeated that strategy.); what he was doing two years later I won't even try to guess, and whether he was in western Europe or had headed off somewhere else.

Okay that's fair although in my defense Mr Weisman said recently he didn't know at this time and I thought I would offer up a reason. In real life I suspect the comic book creators of the character were using Vandal Savage as a name to show how criminal he was since the Vandals got a bad rap because of the sack of Rome. Although as I remember he was Attila the Hun in this continuity, so maybe he used the Vandals to finish the job? And maybe he saw the irony of Vandal being seen as a negative force when in reality it drove the rest of Europe to form their own empires as it were.

And after thinking about all of this would it be okay to ask if the reason why he doesn't want his exploits to be known is because he doesn't want scrutiny along having the focus be on humanity and not an individual? That is the only thing I could come up with because I don't see why he wouldn't otherwise.

Unfortunately, I would probably need to delete that question under Guideline #8, as you surmised.

You could ask when this version of Vandal came up with the moniker, though I'm not sure whether Greg would answer that. But if he did, it'd give you a better idea on whether or not your personal theory is viable.

No I don't mean respond to this question! I was asking the moderators if that was okay to ask. And that when he comments its unassuming white text but maybe that is a preference?

I don't know. But from what I've seen, he comments here only extremely rarely and therefore it can't be counted on that he'll respond to anything on the forum.

Okay given the backlog this might be a long ways off but I wanted to ask a question about why Vandal Savage has his current name in Young Justice aside from being inherited so to speak but I wanted to make sure it wasn't an idea disguising as a question so I thought I would ask it here first.

Essentially I was wondering if the name Vandal was a reference to how the Vandals ended/sacked Rome a stagnating empire that was not growing in a state of perpetual weakness and it needed to evolve/face adversity if humanity/the region was to grow stronger similar to his speech to the Justice League in Season 1. And to do that you needed to be Savage as it were.

And on a random note since apparently Mr. Weisman comments every now and then on this forum is there a reason he does not have a cool image maybe an a picture or character that only he can use you know as creator privilege maybe?

Those of us who subscribe to Owen Dennis's "Infinity Train of Thought" got a newsletter yesterday about what little is known about the show's removal from HBO Max: https://owendennis.substack.com/p/so-uh-whats-going-on-with-infinity

I read an interesting piece from Gizmodo about WB's animation being caught in the crossfire of executive shenanigans of late. (you can find it here: https://gizmodo.com/warner-bros-discovery-animation-hbo-max-removals-1849434030)

But it brings up an interesting of how we treat products and creators. The comments brought up a scary thought, of corporate taking recently purchased properties and throwing them away for tax write-offs becoming a new norm and that's a scary thought for pretty much everyone involved in production, especially those that need residual pay after the work is completed.

But maybe one good thing to come from this is that it can encourage more people into focusing solely one creator owned properties or independent productions. To be honest, nothing about Thundercats Roar appealed to me. But the way CN quickly picked them up then dropped them completely was pretty scummy. But I am glad that many of the animators were able to work on Helluva Boss, where the production treats those involved much better and it's free from corporate BS.

In any case, I want to hope what's happening with Warner Discovery and HBO Max ends up a bad foot note in the history of the entertainment history, rather than the standard.

Based on the ableist anti-autistic comment, it's probably the same anonymous troll we had before trying a new line. Keep ignoring them.

Infinity Train is an awesome show! A prime example of an imaginative animated series aimed at an older target audience, which its creator Owen Dennis wrote an article about. I saw the first two seasons on Cartoon Network and the third (the darkest yet) on HBO Max while I had temporary free subscription. Which ended before the fourth season premiered. I highly recommend it to everyone and wish we could get it renewed.

KARRIN BLUE - I've read that "Infinity Train" was one of the casualties. I only got to see the first season, but I thought it was a good show.

Honestly, I'm not sure it's about the HBO/Warner/Cartoon Network things, so much as this weird trend for some fans to treat the creators of their favorite shows like sacred idols who need to be explosively defended from any slight instead of people. Reminds me a bit of when people blew up at Tee Franklin for misunderstanding a tweet Greg made (a misunderstanding they cleared up between themselves in, what, an hour?) and wouldn't stop harassing her even when Greg told them to knock it off. It always seems to me like a weird, ironic sort of cult of personality, where even the person who it's theoretically all about doesn't want any, more about having an excuse to get mad at people than anything else. Though who knows, really.

It is sad what's happening over there, though. I saw some tweets from show creators who had made their works for their kids, who now have no (legal) way to actually have those kids see them now, and they're just heartbreaking. Or people who had finished episodes that hadn't aired yet, and now might not ever be seen by anyone. Or the content that's old, but was never collected in any hard format people could buy and keep on their own. I suppose it's just what we were warned would happen when everything switched to streaming, though...

Karrin Blue

Jeez, okay I know some folks are a little anxious since Zaslav decided to take the slash 'n burn approach to all his new properties. But lashing out on behalf of creators (who are more than capable of speaking up for themselves) does no one any good.

Wow, what's your problem? You know Greg is just a normal, human person who doesn't need a defense squad (especially an ableist one), right? Kenny wasn't even insulting him, just asking a normal question. Chill out.

Kenny> Your nerodivergent dumbass is talking to Mr. Greg Weisman. Show some motherfucking respect.

yeah? and?

i feel like most shows don't get renewed until the show starts airing (thus, usually long after production wrapped up) so the network can gauge interest. usually the ones that don't fall in this category are the ones that get renewed for two seasons right off the bat, so to speak.

kenny

But long after production on Season Three had ended.
Greg Weisman

the fourth season was renewed in July 2019, roughly in the middle of the second-set of episodes (the back thirteen) for Season Three, with greg informing the audience of a convention as soon as it was announced.
kenny

As I recall, after. There was that whole thing about DC Universe losing all of their original programs and focusing solely on comics while everything else was eventually moved to HBO Max.

Was Young Justice renewed for Season 4 during Season 3 or after?
B
B

i get what you're saying, there's always a chance. but they've had plenty of opportunities to renew the show if they truly wanted to, making the comment seem all the more likely. greg said awhile back that they could be waiting until after the merger, but THAT just seems like poor management then given all the bad press. i really do want to be hopeful but with everything that's happened with DC media recently i'd rather be happily surprised than let down yet again, y'know?
kenny

Technically speaking, we haven't gotten any official word just yet. All the news sites are just quoting one guy and it hasn't been corroborated yet.
I know it's a long-shot but I want to be hopeful.

Matthew

welp, it looks like Young Justice isn't getting another season seeing as HBO Max never planned on making a S5 in the first place and its extremely unlikely they'd make it after the merger. words cannot describe my disappointment and anger. this should've been greenlit back in the mid-season finale when the show was topping the charts. idk what the heck those idiots are doing over there at DC, but its not working. animation used to be THEIR thing and Marvel's gone and taken that too. good lord.
kenny

As of this writing, there's been no official statement released on any of Warner Bros. animated series. I know the showrunners for Harley Quinn are pretty confident on a renewal, but that show gets advertised to hell and back.
Matthew

It probably won't be at the end of the comic, but I'm expecting an announcement at New York Comic-Con, especially since Fandome doesn't seem to be on this year. That's assuming the internal issues at Warner Bros don't interfere of course.
Karrin Blue

I think Young Justice is not cancelled.
I think they are going to announce a season 5 after the YJ Targets comics reached the final issue.

My main thought was that August in somewhere as far north as Scotland means the battles must have gone very late for gargoyles to get involved.

Looking over today's answers, one thing that stood out to me was asking whether Wildcat's hand wraps were a carryover from The Brave and the Bold.
It's funny that his background as a boxer is overlooked and the hand wraps are a part of that.

I looked up Macbeth's Stone on-line and learned that it was said to be a memorial to the son of Earl Siward of Northumbria (the leader of Canmore's English allies), also named Siward, whom Macbeth personally slew in the fighting. (The Siwards didn't get mentioned in "City of Stone", of course - not enough room for them, I suppose - but did appear in Shakespeare's play.) One of the sites that I consulted, by the way, was called "canmore.org.uk".
Todd Jensen

Interesting that Macbeth key points of Macbeth's life happened at around the same time.
Is it weird that my first thought was that Scotland's weather is so miserable that no one wants to war until the summer time?

Given the way the Stone of Destiny story ended, it could be.
Todd Jensen

Sorry, I was camping. Otherwise I would have been more than happy to bring what reserves of energy I have.

With regards to Macbeth's defeat, there is apparently a big rock in Aberdeenshire called Macbeth's Stone which commemorates that battle. No word on whether it's a particularly Destiny-bestowing variety of big rock.

First. I hope this won't be as slow a week as last one was.

Today's the anniversary of Macbeth's defeat by Canmore in 1057. And yesterday, August 14, was the anniversary of Macbeth's defeat of Duncan in 1040. I still find it amazing that those two events, though in different years, were that close to each other on the calendar.
