MATTHEW - Keeping an eye on the cast will be especially handy for the next episode; there's a line in it that becomes a lot funnier if you know who's voicing who.
Todd Jensen

Additionally Sam was the voice of Donatello in the 2003 TMNT series.
Antiyonder

You may also know Eden Riegel as the voice of Devola and Popola in NieR and NieR:Automata, and of Accord in Drakengard 3.

Yeah, I do watch the end credits (the closing theme is delightful). Usually to see the cast and who plays who.

One thing I haven't mentioned is that the voice director is Eden Riegel, younger sister to Sam Riegel who worked as the voice director on the rebooted Ducktales. The two of them have a knack for this, so good for them.

MATTHEW - Incidentally, I just wondered. In the three episodes of "The Owl House" you saw so far, did they include the ending credit sequence? The Season One ending credit sequence is a particular delight. (If you haven't seen it, it shows Luz wandering about the Boiling Isles, regarding some of the places she visits with delight - including Hexside, where she happily exchanges greetings with Willow and Gus while Amity watches in an utterly indifferent - or at least, apparently indifferent - manner, while unsettled by others, until she returns to Eda's house where Eda and King are waiting for her, and happily races there.)
Todd Jensen

Forgot to mention how funny it was that Eda doesn't know what a hug is.

Todd Jensen re: the She-Wolf: Lol.

MATTHEW - Yes, the bit where Luz spectacularly misinterprets the "Lie" command is one of my favorite moments of that episode as well.

Gus's introduction brings up another fun aspect of the show; the inhabitants of the Boiling Isles are aware of humans, all right, but their notions of what they're like are often hilariously wrong.

And, yes, keep an eye on Amity....

Todd Jensen

Just saw "I was a Teenage Abomination" which properly introduces us to those characters shown in during the credits: Willow, Gus, and Amity. I didn't even recognize Mae Whitman at first, it's not often she plays condescending jerks. I rather like this new trio and I'm curious to see how this relationship will work out, maybe Amity will actually live up to the meaning of her name.

They certainly poke fun at the whole magical school genre but it's also nice that they play it straight too. I kinda expected some dark twist on things, but no. Eda is just anti-authority and that's why she doesn't want Luz going there. Or at least that's the reason given thus far.

Love the little subplot with King (or Mr. Wiggles) and the worm. Positive reinforcement without proper discipline just creates a spoiled pet. I assume we'll get more on him and demons later.

Favorite Line:
"Abomination, lie."

"Um...viral fame is a worthy pursuit. Your cat would never eat you if it got the chance. Chemtrails are real..."

B - I have a humorous book on European history which included a picture of the mother wolf bidding a tearful farewell to the grown-up Romulus and Remus as they prepare to depart to found Rome; with one forepaw, she's wiping her eyes with a hankie, and with the other paw, handing them a packed lunch.

ANTIYONDER - So that makes two Disney Afternoon cartoons whom Dynamite's reviving with its comics (and I suspect the news will go over well here; I recall that some of the most popular and eagerly-discussed "Duck Tales reboot" episodes here were the ones featuring Darkwing and Co.).

Todd Jensen

Dynamite is going to be returning Darkwing Duck to comics in 2023: https://toonado.com/disney/dynamite-entertainment-gets-dangerous-with-new-darkwing-duck-comic-series-debuting-in-2023-a6022#gs.gzp32n
Antiyonder

We don't know what happened to the Capitoline Wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus or Amalthea (the goat or nymph who nursed Zeus) either, other than that Amalthea's goat skin became Zeus's aegis after she died and she was turned into the constellation Capra (not to be confused with Capricorn). But it doesn't say how she died.

I've sometimes wondered what became of Audhumla; she disappeared from the story after licking Odin's grandfather out of the ice. I remember the d'Aulaires' version of the Norse myths (my introduction to the subject when I was a boy, and thus one of my favorite retellings) had her drowned alongside most of the early frost giants in the flood that ensued from Odin and his brothers slaying Ymir, but that appears to have been their invention to sew up a loose end.
Todd Jensen

Todd Jensen> Hard to say.
I think in the early plans for the series,
she was to debut in the first episode. Back when Hexside wasn't part of the plan.
Antiyonder

Between Ymir and Audumia, Norse myth was pretty weird in regards to their origins.

Oh, and the quote at the end of your review - Luz's description of the "bad girl chosen one" does seem almost like a foreshadowing of a certain major character who'll be introduced in the next episode (though I don't know if the writers intended that or not).
Todd Jensen

MATTHEW - The notion of a world made from the remains of an ancient being on the level of the Titan goes back all the way to mythology. In the Norse myths, for example, the world was made from the body of the first frost giant, Ymir. Babylonian mythology similarly had the god Marduk make the world from the remains of the primordial goddess Tiamat after he slew her (the latter example might be the more appropriate one for the comment room, since I understand that the myth of Marduk and Tiamat was incorporated into "Young Justice"). And, yes, keep an eye on this being the origin of the Boiling Isles....
Todd Jensen

Just watched "Witches Before Wizards" which really did demonstrate how subversive the series would be towards the fantasy genre. I like that despite Luz's excitement, being a witch isn't exactly what she thought it would be. Eda is a scrounger/saleswoman and that can be a competitive market against some really nasty things.

I love the potshots taken at the whole "chosen one" bit; personally I haven't take that term seriously ever since I watched "Kung-Pow!" but it's been a little pervasive in the teen/YA scene for some time now. It felt like more than a few scenes were written to poke fun at the writings of Stephanie Meyer or Cassandra Clare.

Andegast was a great and creepy villain, like an anglerfish as designed by H.P. Lovecraft and M. Jarrault. I'm almost a little disappointed that his goal was mostly to get back at Eda. A demon that plays into the fantasies of the young and naïve could make for an intriguing antagonist, especially since he so perfectly captures the ideal world Luz was looking for.

So the Boiling Iles are made from the body of some long dead titan/monster/thing? I'm getting some Xenoblade vibes there.

Favorite Line:
What kind of chosen one should I be? Should I be full of optimism and goodness, like the good witch Azura? Or should I be a bad girl chosen one with black nail polish and a mysteriously withdrawn attitude? "I act like I don't care but I secretly do."

Sorry for the double post, but, inspired by Antiyonder's question, if any of the "Gargoyles" cast *did* see "The Owl House", anyone besides me think that they'd find
Emperor Belos/Philip disquietingly familiar - reminding them, in particular, of two of the major adversaries to the clan?
Todd Jensen

The mention of "Vows" reminds me of how the DVD, as well as the Disney Plus version, used the original ending. I remember taping all of the first two seasons on videotape in 1997, when I learned that the show was ending, and the version of "Vows" I taped was the second, "correct" version. While in most cases I prefer the DVDs to my old tapes (which I no longer have - I no longer have a VCR, just a DVD player, so I couldn't watch them anyway), the "Vows" ending was the big exception. At least I've seen the second version up on YouTube.
Todd Jensen

Well and for those like me, never outgrew an enjoyment for cuteness.

And for shows like TOH, we just have to accept heartbreaking pain as a trade offXD.

So just discussing with someone how it would be cool if TOH could get it's comic soon if only for two great Disney properties telling new stories at the same time.

That said, with the characters who might still be around by 2020, any idea who might take a liking to TOH in-universe?

Antiyonder

Just a general vibe, I've seen that there are plenty of animated comedies that turn out to be far deeper than the silly gags would have you believe.

Matthew> "so I can pick up the jokes and most likely important plot points disguised as jokes that I missed." "I imagine the Boiling Island is going to be everything and nothing like what she's expected."

You must have done this before. :)

Other than the ending of Vows and the altered shooting scene in Deadly Force, I think the eps on Disney + have always been intact.
Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

Been rewatching the series again because I guess my cousin wanted a reminder for the comic that's coming out. Did the Disney+ version always have the original version of City of Stone where Goliath said "terrorist" or did they correct that at some point?

Vows still has the wrong ending, though. Of course.

No. It's an ongoing, so it could be any length depending on how well it sells.

Has Dynamite said how many new comics we're officially getting?
Anthony

And there was the part about Luz's theory about a little-known aspect of griffon biology turning out to be correct....
Todd Jensen

Oh the giraffe bit was great too, I'm half expecting a qilin to show up and explain how they couldn't deal with those weirdo relatives of theirs.
Matthew
Ain't nothing crazy 'bout me but my brain!

MATTHEW - Yes, it's a lot of fun. Another highlight, for me, was the bit about giraffes being originally fro the Boiling Isles, but they were exiled to Earth because they were just too weird for the Isles' denizens (and as I mentioned here a week or two ago, given what a lot of the Boiling Isles' inhabitants are like....).

Wait until you see the next episode; all I'll say is that Luz really discovers there how different the Boiling Isles are from the expectations raised by conventional fantasy fiction....

Todd Jensen

So caught the first episode of "The Owl House" and I rather liked it. It definitely has that distinct Millennial sense of humor and the jokes were a mile a minute, I'm going to have to probably rewatch it so I can pick up the jokes and most likely important plot points disguised as jokes that I missed.

A lot of it reminds me of early Adventure Time in that you've got a fully immersive fantasy world but the characters don't really take anything too seriously or are just kind of used to the sheer bizarreness of the world and Wendie Malick's blasé performance really encapsulates that. Luz is going to make an interesting viewpoint character given that she's a passionate weirdo who's now living in a fantasy world, I imagine the Boiling Island is going to be everything and nothing like what she's expected.

Favorite Line (too many to list so I'll just go with the first one)

"NO! My only weakness! Dying!"

"Well, I'm back..." -Samwise Gamgee, Lord of the Rings

And thanks to Disney +, a new generation is discovering our old love. My three year old nephew is apparently getting into the show, there's a picture of him lying on a trampoline watching in awe. He's drawing simple caricatures of gargoyles and "wanted to play 'turn to statues when the sun comes out and fight when the sun goes down.'"

Happy Anniversary Gargoyles! TWENTY-EIGHT years ago today, "Awakening" debuted with its five parts airing each day throughout the week.

And now, three two years into its availability on Disney+, we eagerly await new canonical stories for the first time in thirteen years when the Clan Building trade paperbacks were released (featuring four unreleased issues from Gargoyles and the last two issues from Gargoyles: Bad Guys).

"Gargoyles, chapter two! Or is it three? I've lost count . . ." :)
