B - That does fit the era better.
Todd Jensen

Oh, it wasn't Marlowe, it was Ben Jonson.

Oh, and trivia note: Boscha, one of the girls in Amity's posse (the one with three eyes), was named after Hieronymus Bosch, whose art was a major influence on the design of the Boiling Isles and its inhabitants.

MATTHEW - Yes, the Owl House walking about on legs definitely evoked Baba Yaga. (I remember how I got introduced to her; when I was a kid, I subscribed to a children's magazine called "Jack and Jill" which featured a few stories about her. Baba Yaga was depicted as a bit friendlier than in the traditional Russian legends - if generally acting out of self-interest - assisted by a pet cat. Now I'd like to reread those stories again; pity I no longer have those issues.)

Watched "Hooty's Moving Hassle" today, a fun little outing involving Luz, Willow, Gus and Hooty. Also some demon hunters. I think this is where we really start to get the hang of the rest of the cast and what they're about. Willow is friendly but lonely who really wants validation to get out of her pit of poor self-esteem. Gus is lively and vivacious but seems to have a leap before looking attitude. And Amity is still...Amity but is much more ambitious and not as superficial as her posse is, and of course she has a magical girl posse.

Hooty's been a bit of a background character mostly, here to say a funny line and then be forgotten. Heck, the fact that they made a joke about it was hilarious. But there's certainly a large amount of mysterious potential thanks to this conjuring. And him walking around like Baba Yaga's own house is pretty out there. Now that he's had this kind of focus I wonder what else we might learn about him.

This episode has a lot of great humor to it, especially with Eda, King and Tibbles. And c'mon Eda, even I saw that hustle coming a mile away.

Favorite Lines:

Eda: Hozam! I'll give you ten snails.
Tibbles: Add two more zeroes and it's a deal.
Eda: A thousand snails?! What kind of game are you playing?
Tibbles: Capitalism! Where everyone wins, except you.

So in the world of "The Sandman", Marlowe was still alive at the time of the Gunpowder Plot? (Not that it's the first time someone suggested that his death was faked.)
Todd Jensen

In the Sandman issue "The Tempest", it's Shakespeare and Marlowe who come up with the limerick. BTW, great news about The Sandman being renewed by Netflix. It seemed like a good bet given the high viewership figures, but you never know with Netflix.

I see no reason
Why gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Also read some of those fanfics where the characters watch the show they are in, and one thing about the first Owl House episode I haven't thought of until recently.
So Luz being needed cause only a human could get them past a force field. In hindsight, makes sense considering that Belos is human. Even a suggestion that the Grimwalkers might count due to lack of bile sac.
Antiyonder

I just rewatched the scene from that episode where Eda and Lilith have their duel on YouTube, and, yes, it's very impressive.
Todd Jensen

Action cartoons are kind of a dying breed at the moment mostly due to cost. Young Justice was one of the most expensive DC related shows in now small part to how well done its action sequences are.

I love the fight scene in Covention - if memory serves, it's animated at a higher rate than (most of) the rest of the show? And early on it was a great way to see the animators flex. I just love how dynamic and creative the magic use in this series is - characters zipping around the field, blasting in one moment and then setting up a sneaky attack the next, parrying and counterattacking - I'd love to see more shows given the resources to do stuff like that.

Todd Jensen> Also:
1. Philip when we see him and the present day Dell Clawthorne, don't look all that different.

2. Plus, coloring aside, Dell's Palisman looks similar to Flapjack.
Antiyonder

Todd Jensen> Oh yes.
It's been a theory since around Hollow Mind that Caleb had been involved with a Clawthorne due to moments of his background shown in Belos' mind. Other tidbit prior to her name being revealed:

1. Dana mentioning that bird themed Palisman being a Clawthorne trait.

2. The portal door and key being outside the Clawthorne resident as shown in "Keeping Up A-Fear-Ances".

3. Flapjack (the mentioned bird Palisman) being named after something unfamiliar to the Isles (according to a charity livestream bit with Hunter speaking about his then new buddy*).

And of course Hunter choosing Caleb as his undercover name was something Flapjack convinced him to use in "Any Sport in a Storm".
*
Hunter finds out about what Flapjacks are via Belos by claiming it's something he heard from the human.
At one point he even says "Damn you pancakes!XD
MATTHEW - Thanks for the latest review - and keep an eye on the covens, particularly their link to the Emperor....

Yes, Amity will change a lot; by the end of the first season (and even more into the second) - let's just say that she'll show herself to be more than Hexside's version of Ethel Hallow....

Todd Jensen

"Edalyn?"

Watched "Covention" today which brings more world building by the truckload. And Luz? Don't accept any magical challenge with intricate rules until you knowwhat said rules are. So apparently covens act in similar ways to guilds and help find magic users find a place of employment and belonging at the cost of limiting their magical abilities, with the crème de la crème being the personal members to the emperor.

Really taking that D&D approach to barred schools of magic eh?

This offers some new light into Eda's disdain for magic school, only those in direct service to the emperor can keep the limitless of magic and even then they still answer to someone. Eda wants the freedom of full magic and the freedom from responsibility, so consequently she's a wanted woman. I like the dynamic with Lilith, now are they sister/sisters? Or sisters from the same coven sisters? They do look like they could be related. In any case, Lilith is aware of Eda's curse and still cares to her in some degree, but the complexities of that relationship are still yet to be revealed.

Speaking of complex relationships, I want to be hopeful that Luz and Amity's relationship will improve now that both know where the other's coming from. But I worry that Amity's pride and Luz's general unluckiness is going to mess that up.

I haven't mentioned the actors much, but Cissy Jones does a great job matching Wendie Malick and I've never heard JB Blanc use a voice like what he does with the principle. Nice that he gets to show some versatility.

And we knew about Eda with owls and apparently Lilith has corvids, do all the big time mages come with an animal motif?

Favorite Lines:

Luz: I'm receiving magic lessons from a powerful witch and a ferocious demon.
Amity:...Is that your ferocious demon there?
King: Cupcakes in my tummy-tum makes a king say yummy-yum!

Sorry for the double post, but I just remembered [SPOILER[ that Eda adopted the alias of "Marilyn" when she visited Earth once (some viewers pointed out that Stan Pines of "Gravity Falls" had a short fling with a lady named Marilyn once, and have speculated about her identity), making three names in her family ending in "-lyn" - if two belonging to the same person - and increasing my suspicions about Evelyn.
Todd Jensen

JURGAN - Yes, I suspect that once the humans realize that the gargoyles are sentient/sapient beings, it'll raise some really big questions. All the real-life issues involving minorities dealt with human minorities. Now the humans will be working out how to handle non-human minorities, something that they've no precedent for. I can imagine the lawyers and law courts spending a lot of time trying to figure out how to solve that.
Speaking of Belos, does anyone besides me suspect that Evelyn - the witch whom Caleb fell in love with - was an ancestor of Eda's? Note that it's been established in the series earlier that "Eda" is short for "Edalyn", and her mother was named Gwendolyn. So, now that we've got a third witch in the series whose name ends with "-lyn", I can't help wondering....
Todd Jensen

So regarding Belos,
if he remained in the Human Realm as Philip, anyone imagine him telling children that if they don't obey their parents and go to sleep on time that the witches will get them?
Todd: I know I heard him say 12, it could be that he has ideas for 12 but only 6 have been ordered yet. Maybe next month they'll tell him to write 52 this year.

It could be that the trial story starts with a minor crime and spins out into a bigger issue about whether the Constitutional term "person" applies to gargoyles. It's like how a man named Miranda was arrested on a kidnapping charge and thought he had to talk to the police. Now every defendant has to be told they have the right to remain silent before an interrogation.

Feliz Día de los Muertos!

B - Continuing the grand tradition (already carried out by Charles Schulz and Tim Burton) of fusing those two holidays, eh?

JURGAN - There'll be twelve episodes? I thought there were originally going to be six (if with the prospect of more if the comic sold well enough). Not that I'm complaining.

And, yes, I'd like to see to see the "Goliath on trial" done right. And with a better resolution than the "trick the gangster boss into unwittingly confessing".

I think it'd be a long time before we could expect the gargoyles to be interviewed on the news - though (continuing the "voice actor gag" trend in this week's comment room) the mention of Hudson in that context could lead to a Lou Grant allusion or two. :)

Todd Jensen

Maybe a member of the Clan or two on Nightwatch? I'd love to see Hudson bring his lovable gruff to talk show television.

Ain't nothing crazy 'bout me but my brain!

Matthew: Given that it's canon that Brooklyn watches Star Trek, I wonder if he has any opinions on Councilor Troi.

The latest Voices podcast had Greg say that the first twelve issues of the new comic will be themed around the gargoyles integrating into Manhattan society. Any predictions what that entails? I have a hunch the "Goliath on trial" story will take place in this first year.

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

Todd> Shows occasionally do jokes like that. There was an episode in Futurama where the crew meet a Bender look-alike named Billy West and Fry (played by Billy West) thinks it's a dumb, made up name.

Happy Halloween!

MATTHEW - Thanks for the latest review. This is one episode, by the way, which rewards looking at the cast list - knowing that King and Hooty are voiced by the same guy (Alex Hirsch) makes the bit at the end where King's complaining about Hooty's voice a lot funnier.

Saw "The Intruder" today, an appropriately spooky episode for the spooky season. A fun little Luz and King episode. The more I watch King the more I'm reminded of the Nibblonians of Futurama, so desperate to be seen as ancient, powerful and mysterious but everything they say and do just makes them look cuter. Difference is King doesn't seem to care if people think he's cute.

So, the owl motif has a specific reason and Eda is cursed. I wondered about some of the things like being able to survive decapitation but apparently she's also cursed? Or is that part of the whole deal along with transforming into an owl monster? Questions for later.

So humans may need to use a more intricate form of runes to cast magic? I don't think they need that weird thing on their hearts. I wonder if that's built into the foundation of magic that other species just forgot about because magic is so integral to their life. Again, questions for later. But Luz can do magic now! And King really needs to reexamine demonology. And Eda has some foreboding dreams.

Favorite Line:
Hey, you know what's really cryptish? Let me tell you about the most spine chilling demon. SMOOTCHIE PIE THE SWEETIE BABY! He's...Well, he's a lot more threatening than his name implies.
