I wait for the books to come out, but I have been following the British comic strip "Fred Basset" on the Go Comics site. I hope it comes back up soon.
Todd Jensen

Todd Jensen> So GoComics has been down. While luckily not frequent, it's definitely a reason I'm happy to get Phoebe and Her Unicorn in print when further volumes are publish:-D.

Plus, I imagine it's good support for Dana Simpson.

Antiyonder

Thought it might've been a blink and you miss it cameo.
Shame, I was hopeful for some crossover shenanigans, like that time they showed up in Dexter's Lab.

Ain't nothing crazy 'bout me but my brain!

*Technically* might not be fictional. Or at least, being fictional might not preclude them from also being real. Casey Brinke's comic origins could apply to a few such characters. As could something akin to Comic Jay creating comics after his adventures which Comic Barry became a fan of.
Ash

So they're fictional on Earth-16 as well. (Then again, Dyno-Mutt might have been a little too oddball for the setting.)
Todd Jensen

Found it (and can't believe I missed it on MULTIPLE rewatches)! The Dog Wonder and his faithful companion show up (spoilered for anyone who'd prefer to search themselves)
on the cover of a comic being read by Artur during the "super-playdate." See here: https://64.media.tumblr.com/77e9376c2f2e531fa8ba2422809bff77/tumblr_inline_pljnpaqbT31v7rbyk_500.png
Joseph: Welcome, and hope you enjoy! If you're a fan of YJ, you're likely to really have fun with Gargoyles! Never been a better time to get into the series if you've never given it a whirl before.

My mistake.:-D. But Blue Falcom and Dyno-Mutt being canon is still interesting.
Antiyonder

The Countback's not a wish list. Everything on it is already from canon episodes/issues/audioplay/game.
Greg Weisman

Todd Jensen> I'm thinking of a certain opening to Batman The Brave and the Bold incidentally and wonder if Space Ghost will pop up on the countback.
Antiyonder

Sorry for the double post, but:

1. The mention of Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt as the most recent entries on Greg Weisman's "Young Justice" character list *might* be interpreted as a sign that he still hopes for a "Young Justice/Scooby-Doo" crossover, given that Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt originated as a "Scooby Doo" spin-off.

2. Fleecs' variant drawing for #3 of the "Gargoyles" comic book shows the statue of Balto in Central Park in the background - appropriate, in its depiction of canine heroism, for a scene with Goliath meeting and befriending a dog.

Todd Jensen

Mind you, Hooty has had a few impressive moments - though those are some episodes after "Escape of the Palisman".

I forgot to mention this, but happy birthday, Mickey Mouse! (November 18 is generally considered his birthday because it's when "Steamboat Willie" premiered.) Mickey helped make "Gargoyles" possible, in a sense, by being the foundation of Disney - as Walt said, "It all started with a mouse."

Todd Jensen

And yeah, Hooty is a good individual to have if you want to prompt a parent to get their kid an education and to encourage said kid to take schooling seriously.XD
Antiyonder

Yea this site seems to be originally for Gargoyles discussion all the way back when, but I mostly just trawl the Ask Greg archives for YJ tidbits. I'm hoping to start Gargoyles and at least make some good progress before issue 1 drops in December!
Joseph D
Why isn't anyone just whelmed?

We just got the covers of #3 of the upcoming "Gargoyles" comic at GargWiki, and there's another Fleecs cover continuing the "gargoyles making friends with dogs" - Goliath, in this case. (I read up a bit more on Fleecs, and learned that he worked on a comic book called "Stray Dogs" about dogs being collected by a serial killer who's mu7rdered their humans. I'll have to research it a bit more to see if the dogs featuring on the covers are from that series.)
Todd Jensen

We did add some new avatars when the SLG Gargoyles comics came out, but that's the only time I remember.
Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

Masterdramon> Incidentally Strawberry Shortcake Berry in the Big City episode "The Fashion Show featured a character named Banoffee who is
referred to onscreen as a transberry
. And Lime Chiffon has
Two dads
.

While not a sure thing, I have gotten into the Strawberry Shortcake x Orange Blossom pairing.

Antiyonder

I've been scouring the backgrounds of the comics ever since for some diminutive reference to the Daring Duo. No luck so far, but knowing Greg and Chris it wouldn't surprise me to sneak something in even my obsessive eyes might miss.

B: "The Girl from the Sea" is basically a lesbian twist on
the selkie myth
set in Canada. The Witch Boy trilogy is about a young teen who has a talent for witchcraft, despite his clan's traditions that only girls can become witches and boys must become shapeshifters instead. The intended allegory is pretty obvious, and there's a fair bit of other LGBT+ content as the books unfold.

Basically all of Molly's work I've read so far has been great. Queer comics, manga, and novels in general make up like...90% of my casual reading these days, LOL. I'm a particularly easy mark for yuri of just about any stripe - I see WLW, I buy.

So Dyno-Mutt is a character that exists at least as canon-in-training?

Antiyonder

Welcome aboard, Joseph!

Those titles all sound really interesting, Antiyonder.

Hello, Joseph and welcome. I've been here for a little over ten years and I know the website is much older than that and to my knowledge there's never been any work to update the avatars. But then the site is older than both Young Justice and Spectacular Spider-Man.

As for how the site works, mostly it's discussion based and how busy it is depends on people's schedules and whether there's anything that draws a lot of talk (it doesn't have to be dependent on Greg's works). With the new Gargoyles comics coming out next month I imagine it will be quite active.

We keep things pretty loose here, just mind the language and remember that this isn't the place to ask Greg questions.
That's directed here: https://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/ask.php

Ain't nothing crazy 'bout me but my brain!

Hi everyone, I'm not really sure how this website works or who even the moderators are beyond the Ask Greg forum, but would it be even possible to get young justice avatars here as well as gargoyles avatars for the comment room?
Joseph D
Why isn't anyone just whelmed?

Antiyonder: All of those are excellent.

Apparently King's Squeak of Rage is proved by Dana Terrace herself.

Incidentally I got a LGBT GN last year "The Girl From the Sea". The author of it? Molly Ostertag who wrote for a good amount of TOH. She also wrote "The Witch Boy", "The Hidden Witch" and "The Midwinter Witch".

Got them this week in the mail and will be reading them later.

Antiyonder

That sounds fun, Todd. I used to hear "Our House" on the radio fairly often as a kid and it's funny that Disney would do a parody of that.
Matthew
Ain't nothing crazy 'bout me but my brain!

Thanks for the latest review, Matthew.

I've seen speculations that Bat Queen was the Titan's palisman when he was alive, but that hasn't been confirmed (or denied) yet.

This was the "mid-season finale", I recall. The first group of episodes, when they initially aired at the start of 2020, had a little feature at the end of each one called "Look Hooo's Talking" where a couple of owls would comment on the developments in that episode. (It might have been just after this episode - certainly around that time - that they did a musical video sung by Hooty and a few "regular" owls, a parody of "Our House", which used the refrain "Owl House/ In the middle of the [Boiling] Isles", with Eda then stating that it actually isn't in the middle, more to one side - until finally she gets fed up and drives the owls out.)

Todd Jensen

Oh Luz, did you learn nothing of playing around with magic without permission? Oh King, did you learn nothing about trying to boss around power you can't control? Oh Eda, did you learn nothing about taking your elixir on time? Oh, wait...

Watched "Escape of the Palisman" today which builds up more lore and mystery. I like the story behind palismans, they're like talismans, familiars and best buddies all in one. I kinda forgot that Owlbert is a separate character, though he hasn't really shown up much. But we get a better look into him and into palismans in general, that they're living emotional things and unfortunately like pets they can be hurt or abandoned. The revelation that Bat Queen was a palisman was surprising (as was her return); at first I thought her "trials" was just an excuse to get someone to do her chores. No, turns out she's the veritable guardian of these lost creatures. Now I'm wondering how they'll play out in the series.

But the other big revelation comes from Eda and her curse. Namely that she doesn't know who cursed her, and her elixir isn't working anymore. Which is bad. But she's not going on animalistic rampages against her friends. Which is good. And she can revert back with the proper emotional incentive. Which is...foreshadowing?

I had a good laugh with Luz and the school colors. Partly because her default outfit is that of a rival school and also because Hexside's blue and yellow reminds me of my junior high and high school, we had the same.

Favorite Lines:

King: Fine. Don't help. Revenge will taste all the sweeter if they fall by my hand alone. Mwa-hehehehe!
Kid: Tag! You're it!
Eda: Oh man. Here we go. King's squeak of rage.
King: Nrrrr! NRRRR! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!
Eda: (laughing) He's like a little teakettle!

Todd Jensen> Saw it, but missed the FiM reference. Good catch.
Antiyonder

Oh so her name is Skara? I recognized her from the last episode as part of Boscha's group. So I guess it's safe to assume that we'll be seeing more of the background students and learning about them.
Matthew
Ain't nothing crazy 'bout me but my brain!

They did something similar in a special "commercial for Hexside" hosted by the headmaster, which shows the students having various misadventures and concludes with the headmaster saying about Hexside "Where the magic of friendship... is no longer taught due to budget problems".
Todd Jensen

Oh and a reference I liked was Skara's "Friendship is the real magic" line.
Antiyonder

See that's another high point for The Owl House. It's Harry Potter, but the more inclusive version.😝
Antiyonder

Indeed, I wish they had done more about bullying when I was being bullied in grade school, instead of 'I didn't see it happen (in my own classroom) so there's nothing we can do'.
B
B

Yep, we've at least two Harry Potter pot shots coming up in future episodes. (You'll know them when you see them.)

A few other highlights of this episode:

1. The moment that convinces Eda that she should let Luz attend classes at Hexside instead of just teaching her: Hooty was her pupil.

2. The scene where she has to clean up her magical graffiti, and it tries to get away before changing into the words "MOTHER, NO!" A bit dark when you think about it, but also funny.

3. Gus discovering that the illusion of himself isn't actually paying attention in class.

4. Eda reading the reports on her wild antics at school (which you quoted in the "Favorite Line" section) with a "fond memories" tone.

Todd Jensen

Edalyn Clawthorne? And she was a ginger?

Watched "Something Ventured, Someone Framed" and we get a big shakeup, Luz is going to school! Wonder how that's going to line up with the time she's supposed to be spending in camp...

I've noticed that there's been a big lack of Eda teaching Luz magic lately and I'm a little surprised that Eda would not only recognize that Luz needs more attention than what she's been giving her, but that she'd humble herself to get her enrolled in place she knows Luz will thrive, even if she herself disdains it.

The magic school setting is going to offer up a lot of new story and high-jink potential. The show has no problem poking fun of other fantasy tropes and clichés, I can only imagine how much more they'll do with this. I expect a few Harry Potter pot shots in the future.

I mentioned before that Gus has a bit of intensity to him which contrasted well with the more passive Willow. Looks like some of that might be to cover up some insecurities about his young age. I've never known any kids smart enough to be bumped up a few grades but I do know that kids can be a bit harsh on those younger than themselves or different, or anything really. Kids can be the worst.

Which brings up another thing. WHAT KIND OF DETENTION IS THAT?! Seriously. Look, I'm all for curbing bullying at school, in fact I think that's something that the education really needs to crack down on. But when your principle expresses surprise that someone's alive after going through that, it's time to rethink your disciplinary actions.

Oh, and this is where the "I forget I'm here toooo." Bit comes from huh?

Favorite Line:

Incident #2601

At 1400 hours, Edalyn Clawthorne was at it again. This time she found two giant bug-things that really just tore up the place. Oh man, I'm getting so tired writing these things. And now I'm just writing down what I'm thinking. Oh I hope no actually reads these. I should take a day off. It's been years since my overlords let me take a day off.

While we're on the subject, I really can't recommend Kevin's autobiographical comic in the DC Pride 2022 anthology enough.
Karrin Blue

So happy that Greg is back! I hope he feels up to answering questions anyway, but I don't want him to rush. I was feeling much of the same irritation that he did with the recent batch of questions sadly

As I said on the blog, a lovely tribute, Matthew.

Thanks Todd, that image is from the Neil Gaiman graphic novel, "Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?"

The story is about Batman's supporting cast and enemies coming together for his wake. Each of them telling a different perspective of Batman's life and their relationship. Won't tell you the end though, you'll have to read it for yourself.

Matthew

Thanks for the tribute, Matthew.

One of the pictures in it I noted were a set of comic panels saying "Good Night" to the Bat-Signal, the stars in the night sky, etc. - in a way that almost felt like a "Batman" version of "Good Night Moon". Could you tell me a bit more about it, please?

Todd Jensen

Second.

I forgot to mention, but I did a quick honoring of Kevin Conroy on my blog here. Not much, but I still felt the need to do something.
