My sister is planning a convention and wanted to get some info on how to handle matters of guests and is in general seeking any advice. Anyone have Crzy D's em addie or would a prior or current con chair be willing to pass on some advice?

Thanks!

hm, there must be some good reasons why no one is posting as much anywhere. It's just coincidence on the comic being delayed and now this, we must be busy. I've been busy on homework, caring for my sister, WoW, we all must have some good reasons.

Humans are such easy prey for a gargoyle!

Well this is interesting! It sounds like the CR was holding a wake and didn't tell anyone. And now the CR is suspicously dead.

Remember the old Gargoyles comics!

Wow, I haven't seen a room this quiet since Elisa's last Internal Affairs review.
Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

Some of Greg's responses to "episode reviews" tend to be short ones as well. One of his most recent replies was to my response to his "Future Tense" ramble, and I think it was just one sentence or so. I was a little disappointed at that, because I was curious to see what he would say about a couple of my remarks about the episode. (One in particular was about how Xanatos was acting somewhat out of character in this episode - not that it matters since it turns out that it was really Lexington pretending to be Xanatos, and all an illusion of Puck's, anyway - in going for such a "cliched cartoon super-villain" style rather than his far more subtle atmosphere. I certainly can't imagine the "real Xanatos" openly conquering Manhattan and turning it into a police state - far too melodramatic for his tastes.)

nyone got a link to the Something Awful gargoyles stuff?
Matt

The SA thread is still around (though it's not by someone who runs SA, just one of the members). Click on my name. He got through Awakening 5 and hasn't quite decided if he's going on. I hope he does- it's pretty funny. Oddly, though, at one point where someone shoots with a gun and misses, he says that "no one will ever get shot with a gun in a cartoon. EVER." Since he clearly knows that that will be proven wrong three episodes later, it's kind of a strange comment.

Turpentine! (I'm saying that so that, when I want to look at the SA thread weeks from now, I can simply come to this week's comments and search for "turpentine," thus saving me having to slog through SA's message board).

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

I thought there was some Disney person who looked at the AG queue. Greg tries to get a certain number so he can refer that Disney person to the url to demonstrate how many people were interested and dedicated to the property. At least, that's what I seem to remember.

Something Awful> The last time I checked (last week sometime) the guy on the SA forums had finished Awakenings 5. I had the link posted in my LJ but their server seems to be down, so I can't find the thread now. Anyone have a direct bookmark?

Matt: What DOES Greg do with them? I think he explained the reason he tries to get a certain number, but when he does that, does he forward the info along to Disney somehow?

Vaevictus: Because I've never been very emotional as a result. Just... lots of neutrality. And did I spell it wrong? Damn, I should know better than that.

I actually joined the fandom late, first learning of its existence in 2004. Honestly, I think a number of the episodes say more now than they did when I first watched them. I wouldn't exactly say that anyone has moved on. I know for a fact that a lot of people who used to post here more often still chat with each other elsewhere. I still communicate with a couple people through IM and LJ, and probably will continue to do so. Just because people make themselves scarce in Station 8, that they aren't still part of the fandom.

On another topic, does anyone know if the person who runs Something Awful has done a continuation on his rambles about Gargoyoles?

Siren, do you mean like putting a video onto YouTube or somesuch? That would be a great idea! Although you should probably avoid dressing up in underwear and a cardboard Gargoyle costume while you film it. Heh.

It's a little frightening when the comment room's biggest contributor-Todd is showing signs of backing away from the fandom. I'll always love the show. I'll admit I haven't watched the show in quite some time, despite having the DVDs. I will buy the comics whenever they come out. As I've said before. Gargoyles is a program that has reached out to me in a way no other show has. I also enjoy the fact that It's opened me up a world of great online friends for which I'll forever be grateful. I'm hoping that's something that people won't forget about before they consider moving on from here. You came here because of the show, but ultimately, you ended up making some friends along the way(at least I hope some of you did). I think that's more of the reason I keep coming back - not so much because of the show, but because there are soo many familiar names and faces around that I've know for years, and new ones coming in that have interesting things to say. The comment room does have it's quiet times, but once we get that first new comic-and we will, things will pick up again. I just hope you'll all stay around to be part of it.

Harvester, I know what Aspergers' is, but why would it make you less susceptible to this room depressing you?
Vaevictis Asmadi

So I am looking at SLG website and apparently people have made "commercials" for their favorite comics. Which has me thinking, maybe I should create one for Gargoyles with both video of the series and images of the book. Kinda an introduction to Gargoyles to maybe help create more fan interest :) I keep plugging the comic when people comment about my Gargoyles videos and they say they wish it wasn't cancelled, I tell them about the comic. Hopefully that helps.

Honestly, the Con journals bore me to tears. I understand why Greg wants them, but like Jurgen says, Greg just kinda reads them and goes on. Not to mention, it seems they just clog up and slow down the queue. Because of their length, Greg usually answers less questions at a time when he is going through them. I often feel that part of the reason the queue is so long is because of Con Journals.
Thats said, I'll probably write up and post my journal per Greg's request after G'07...

Hey guys,

So, just read Todds comment. I guess I know what he means!

Fact is: I havn't been able to pick up the comic so far. I havn't seen 1 sole page of it. Sadly enough.
But I have to admit: I CARE for the stryline, I do so deeply. When the choice came to me, I'd buy the f''''ng rights for Gargoyles, and do a 1 hour-per-EP show, with all the stuff that couldn't make it into the animated series! Damn, I'd even START BACK IN 1994 and move forward! (13 EPs for one Season aren't that much. ;) And, there are EPs that... ergh... coughavalonEPscoughcough... arenotsocoughgoodcough)

Though, somehow, the comic hasn't got me interrested at all. Of course this could also be the fault of the small company publishing it: They got no copies in stores over here in Eruope!! :(

But then again, I WANT to read the new stories!

But I would LOVE to see them.

I guess my problem is, that as much i lve the G-universe, the thing will allwas remain a show for me. If animated or real action wouldn't even matter! But with the 10-years mark passing... uh boy... :(

However, if someone would sell some copies oer to Europe, they'de be sould out after a few hours, I guarantee that. ;)

Cheers.

Jurgan> I'm kind of psyched myself for the moment when Greg reads my G2K6 journal, but also kind of not, since I accidentally posted it w/o fixing the swearing bits. Crud.

*grumbles beneath his breath about having 5 other windows and 3 offline things to do when posting con journals*

Todd Jensen> I tend to doubt the premature cancellation of the comic. Even if issue #2 doesn't sell very well, I recall Greg saying at the con that the comic would be solid for 3-6 issues, (or 3 years? Fuzzy memory issues...) during which time, if SLG cleans up its' act, the comics could attract enough reader attention to warrant a continuation well beyond the deadline.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra_582 at hotmail dot com]
"Ignore me!" - Venture Bros.

Yes, those are good points. And I will admit that maybe I'm taking that attitude in part because a part of me fears that the comic could wind up getting prematurely cancelled after sales drop because the casual readers get turned off it on account of the four-month delay for #2, and is trying to distance myself from "Gargoyles" accordingly, so that the cancellation won't feel as much of a let-down.
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

I think my interest in "Gargoyles" has increased over the years more or less. In 1999, I didn't know what the Gathering was or even that a fandom existed. Look at me now. I understand why people's interest would wane, but it's sad because I think Gargoyles might just be at the beginning of a second Golden Age. Look what happened after Star Trek:TOS. It spanned four spin offs decades later.
Matt - [O'Fallon, Missouri, USA]
"Toilet out of order. Please use floor below." - Sign in public restroom stall.

Todd: I can see where you're coming from. Part of me agrees, but after getting my hopes up this far... A few years back, when Greg first announced the DVD's, he talked some about the possibility of getting the show "back." At the time, I thought that was just a pipe dream, and I could have lived with that. Now, though, I've been invested in the show all over again, so it'd be doubly hard to lose it.

On another subject: Why do people always get so excited about Greg reading the con journals? We can read them ourselves any time we want, and Greg almost never says anything of substance in the responses, so why do people eagerly count down how long it'll be until he reads them? I am glad, though, that there are only 127 (less, I think, after his answers today) until the end of 2005, because I have a question of my own at the beginning of 2006.

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

I think it would be a big shame, for Greg's sake, if he never got to tell the stories in his head. My favorite author, JRR Tolkien, never got to write most of the stories that he wanted to, and all of his fans suffer for not getting to see them. I'm not nearly as big a fan of Gargoyles but for the sake of people for whom it is their favorite fiction, I'd really hate to see this second chance lost.
Vaevictis Asmadi

Todd Jensen> Well, you are entitled.

Me, I still have too much of a love for the series and a respect for the fandom to ever really walk away from it. I have a lot of expectations still for the comic that I hope to have quenched by future issues, and I look forward to the new stories, which is why I get so frustrated by the #2 delays. I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only one, either.

Speaking of delays, this is probably a moot point, but is there anything we as a fanbase can do to ensure that this does not happen again? Probably not, but I'm asking anyway.

I do have one confession to make. Although I visit this room regularly, check "Ask Greg" for updates each weekday evening, have bought the two DVDs and the first issue of the comic, and will buy any further issues of the comic or DVDs that come out, I've realized that I've moved on (or come close to it) from "Gargoyles". That is, while I'm happy that we may be getting new "Gargoyles" stories at present, and while I do think that it'd be a pity if the comic wound up cancelled because the delay in #2 hurt sales (because it'd be as if you were invited to a big dinner and they cancelled it just after you'd finished the first course and took the rest of the food away), I'm (for the most part) no longer certain that I really want or need to know what happens next to Goliath and his clan (beyond maybe the fact that I'd like to see how Greg Weisman would have handled the themes that I believe the Goliath Chronicles mishandled).

Part of it is that it has been almost ten years since the series ended, and after that amount of time "Gargoyles" has wound up receding into a pleasant memory. It'd probably have receded all the more for me if I hadn't discovered this comment room and come here regularly or worked on TGS for a while (though, in the last couple of years on it, I was far more passionate about handling the "Pendragon" spin-off as a modern-day "return of Arthur" story with "Gargoyles" elements than about the adventures of Goliath and his clan), but even as it is, I find that the flame's burning lower now than it was in the first couple of years after the series ended. I've had new projects to attend to (I'm currently working on an Arthurian novel which actually contains a number of elements that may evoke "Gargoyles" for some - though in a "common source" manner - such as time travel - with the same rules as in "Gargoyles" of "you can't change history because you were already there" - faerie-folk who are vulnerable to cold iron, two female trios who evoke the Weird Sisters in different aspects, Shakespeare references, and even an intelligent race driven into hiding by humans, some of whose members are bitter about it, others want to make peace, and one member has become so vengeful as to want war, though it doesn't resemble gargoyles on a physical basis). I've discovered new books, television series, even webcomics that I now faithfully follow (I've become a fan these days of "Arthur King of Time and Space" and "Gunnerkrigg Court", in particular). So I will admit this: if the comic gets cancelled, I'll probably shrug a little, maybe feel briefly disappointed that we won't get to learn those "untold stories" that Greg Weisman had wanted to tell, and then move on (probably even hoping more not that Greg will find some other way to revive "Gargoyles", but that he'll simply create something new and adapt the untold "Gargoyles" stories to it). Sorry if this upsets anybody, but that's how it is.

Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

In the end, it does make me feel better to know that Greg has actually written four stories for SLG, and is working on writing the fifth. I'm not sure the reason for the delay (the person I spoke to couldn't say, and I can understand that), but at least we know that things are not at a complete screeching halt.
Harvester of Eyes - [Minstrel75 at gmail dot com]
"Well, did you KNOW it was a dog when you had sex with it?" -Upright Citizens Brigade.

I find myself reminded of something that we went through in the early days of TGS. One of the early stories had never shown up, although the person who was supposed to write us had said that it was on a CD that she was mailing to one of the editors. But it wasn't showing up and the due date for the story to be released was drawing closer, and in the end, we had to delay it for a long while. And then it turned out that the person whom we'd assigned to write the story had never actually written it - hadn't even started it - and had made up the story about sending it to the editor via snail mail to cover up, so we had to reassign the story to three other writers. It wound up being a couple of weeks late.

I don't know if something similar happened with Issue No. 2, though.

Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Well, I'm just a casual fan (le gasp!) and the comic delays are definately a possible turn-off for me. I'd love to see new stories for Gargoyles, but I'm leery of paying money for a multi-issue story that might stop halfway through and never be finished because the company suddenly drops it.

I'm also not keen to pay twice their actual price for each comic book over Amazon, for including shipping. I can't find them in stores (too rare) and the issues aren't being reprinted, so I can't buy several off of Amazon at once. $7 an issue isn't terribly expensive but neither is it cheap. I don't have a job and I'm not as obsessed as some of you guys. Besides, I can't buy the comics anyway until I have the DVDs, which are more expensive than I can easily afford. So at this time I have no plans to buy the comics.

Vaevictis Asmadi

Jurgan - <Only 400 questions in Ask Greg!> Actually, I have better numbers for you to ponder: only 127 questions from 2005 and only 63 questions until the 1st Gathering 2005 Journal.
dph_of_rules
Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Only 400 questions in Ask Greg! Hooray! (I thought it was closer to 600.)

At this point, I'm not overly worried about the comicbook. I'm upset that, on the original schedule, we should have been talking about what's coming up in issue 4 right now, but I can live. I don't really think that casual fans will be angry about the delay and refuse to buy issue 2. However, we have lost most of the momentum we built up for issue 1, and we'll probably have to SPREAD THE WORD all over again. I think we definitely have the ability to do it. Furthermore, if they're going to have delays, I'd rather they get them out of the way up front. They say that the art is taking longer than they expected, which means they took on something that was bigger than they thought. It also means that, since they've acknowledged a problem, they're likely taking steps to fix it. Hopefully they're using this time to solve whatever production issues came up. In the long run, I think it's better to have the second issue delayed by four months than to have four issues in a row each delayed by one month.

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

Shara> Well, the show was popular, but I don't know if it was popular enough to have more casual fans stay interested when there's a five motnh gap between new issues. As I did say before, we're talking about a show that debuted 12 years ago and even some people who were big fans at the time have moved on to other things. If we had a fanbase on the level of "Futurama" or "Family Guy", then I think we would be in much better shape with sales on the DVD meeting Disney's expectations and Season Two Part 2 getting produced.

Also, I have seen complaints about the release date getting pushed back on other forums, sometimes in much more colorful languague than is heard here. Myself, I'm glad that SLG came out with a statement on why the delay is happening. I just hope that steps are being taken to insure that future issues will be completed and released in the time frame expected.

I'm not trying to rain on everyone's parade here; I'm just trying to be realistic. I still think anyone who's happy about this comic shoudl promote it in whatever way they can. Let's hope the sales of issue #2, when it comes out, are comparable to or better than those for issue #1.

Demonskrye

Vash good to see you agian. By the way I have a freind who is really egger to help you on the atlantis project. Drop me an email so I can get you her info. She's a manga artist. She was disapointed she couldnt meet you at the gathering.

Todd Jensen>I think since the show was popular it will continue to sell. But thats just my thoughts. But yeah they should make an effort to stick to the release date more. Or don't post one unless they are sure they can make one by that date so you dont have angry people.
Shara

SHARA - I'm more concerned over the fact that the more casual buyers would drift away out of disgust over the constant delays with an attitude of "Fool us once, shame on you; fool us twice, shame on us".

Warcrafter>Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

The video Warcrafter posted isn't disgusting, but rather may have been inspiration.

The video clip was from the Tales From The Darkside: The Movie. TFtD was a show similar to Twilight Zone and Amazing Stories. The movie's last segmant was about a man who witnesses the murder of a man by a gargoyle. The gargoyle makes a deal with him, NEVER talk about what he saw, and the gargoyle would let him live. He ends up meeting a beautiful woman that same evening. They fall in love and marry. They have 2 children and years pass. But he is still haunted by the memory. Finally, one night, he tells his wife about the night they met. In shock and disbelief and yells at him for breaking his promise. Only then does he discover, his wife was the gargoyle who killed the man. And his children also turn into gargoyles. When I first saw Demona turn into a gargoyle on Hunter's Moon, all I could remember was that movie. There is little doubt the artists were inspired by that movie. It could be a coincidence, but at times, they play scene for scene.
We can likely thank that movie for such a wonderful animated scene from Hunter's Moon.

Siren - [Click my name for Hunter's Moon Trailer!]

Personally, I hope that we don't have any further problems with the other issues of the art taking longer than expected. Getting the second issue delayed from August to December has probably jeopardized the comic enough as it is. Let's hope that the artists have learned from whatever went wrong to not let it happen again.
Todd Jensen
Gargoyles - did for monstrous-looking statues what "Watership Down" did for rabbits!

Well, I said I was going to cry if the comic didn't come out in November. Not that it would help anything, but it'd make me feel better ;) But just the fact that SLG has made a statement about what's going on makes me much happier. The worst part about the delay was that none of us knew what had happened or how serious the problem was. The only info we had was seeing it get bumped down the production schedule each month, almost as an afterthought, with no explanation. I know that they didn't want to start pointing fingers-- "We're delayed because so-and-so messed up!"-- but in the lack of any information at all it's only natural that we start imagining all sorts of bad things, 99% of them probably worse than the truth.

We're understandably a little wary of getting our hopes up. The show's been off the air for so long, I never seriously expected us to be so lucky as to get a second chance this way. And I'm so afraid of having that second chance snatched away!

So just a few words from SLG, letting us know that things are indeed progressing, that they're aware we're disappointed/nervous and they're working to fix it, and that it isn't a more serious problem goes a long way to alleviating my anxiety.

So thank you, SLG, for making me a bit less nervous ;) (And thanks to Warcrafter for pointing out the entry in the FAQ here.) I'll hold off on the crying for now.

Kaylle - [kaylle at ladyavalon dot com]

B&CF> the airings are a.m. which is good considering it's dark out when it's on :)

Also, the SLG site has been updated again and according to the FAQ, the reason gargoyles #2 has been pushed back is because the art took longer than anyone working on the project anticipated. The comic is now in production and should come out in December.

Warcrafter - [grafixfangamer1 at sbcglobal dot net]
Humans are such easy prey for a gargoyle!

kjay >I agree with you.

I keep seeing everyone upset about the comic being pushed back a month. It's better its pushed back then to have something chizzled out that looks like crap. Alot of comic companys do that cause there comics are weekly.

Greg seems to be happy with everything so I trust him.

Shara

Gargoyle comic release>The only thing I can say is that we be patient. Rushing and disscussing the hundreds of reasons why the comic didn't come out on time is not going to make it published any faster. The good thing is that al least we got ONE issue released. Sometimes publishers just over step that expectaions.
kjay - [tigonesskay at yahoo dot com]

dph> I wouldn't worry about SLG as a company just because their list of retailers may be inaccurate. They are a small company and their webmaster probably has thing that need to be done before checking the contact info for their listings for comics stores. I'm not sure how frequently the publisher would deal directly with the stores anyways; most of that is probably done through Diamond. If you're really stuck for finding a retailer, try calling 1-800-COMIC-BOOK (or as much of that as actually fit into a phone number). I don't know how up to date their retailer listings are, but they may be able to help. I would also send an e-mail to SLG letting them know that you've had trouble finding this retailer. At the very least, I'd imagine they would remove the listing to prevent other people from being confused.

Stormy> I completely agree with your thoughts on the comic. Unfortunately, we don't know what the reason for the hold up is; at this point there could be multiple problems that have caused the book to miss its various release dates. But if the problem can be traced to any one source and is not due to a one time unforeseen event, changes need to be made. At this early stage, there is no reason why a new or additional person could not be brought in to work on whatever part of the book is being held up. It's certainly not unheard of in comics to have various people doing the same job on different issues of a single comic. Even if we aren't going to get the reason why the comic is being held up, I do wish we could get some assurance that this won't happen again. I imagine if Greg is continuing to go to cons and plug the book, someone's going to ask why issue #2 isn't out yet. I'd be curious to know what his answer is.

Demonskrye

Bonkers: Lucky didn't die. He was promoted to FBI HQ in another city, thereby explaining why his entire family vanished from the series (they moved) and Miranda became Bonkers' new partner.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonkers_%28TV_series%29

However, according to Wikipedia, the episode hasn't aired in years due to the fact that the villain was a bomber/terrorist.

I'm hoping that when the second half of TaleSpin comes out on DVD, that they will include the "banned episode" (Flying Dupes) which has also been removed from TV on account of a bomber/terrorist theme.

Comic Delays: IF it is true that the artist isn't getting the book drawn on time, I think the best thing to do would be to hire another artist, either to replace the slow one, or to assist him by drawing part of the comic (ie, the backgrounds, some of the characters, whatever). Now granted, we don't know if the artist is having health or family problems, that would be understandable, but if that isnt' the case, it's getting to the point where the situation should be addressed. It's in SLG's best interests to keep going strong on a comic that's selling so well for them.

Also, here is what may be some good news that no one may know about yet. Gargoyles now has two showings a day on toon disney, TWO. At 12:30 and 1:30 (well, those are the times for me) which may be more faith that Gargoyles is not dead, not by a long shot.

Humans are such easy prey for a gargoyle!

Comic> I went to the store today to pick up an order for a friend (it's the Anita Blake comic). I bring it up because it sort of reflects what happened with the first issue of Gargoyles. The comic wasn't in yet, but it had gone into second printing. The owner explained the delay because the original owners of the title was smaller, but when it got moved over to Marvel, it immediately made it more viewable to a larger customer base (it may have been in Previews under the original company, or not there at all, hence the smaller order). But it looks like a number of people have expressed interest in the title. In a similar note, the store owner had gotten a copy of Gargoyles #1, which he offered to me because he didn't know if I had it or not. When I declined, he let me know that a number of people had expressed interest but he was only just able to get the second order (the issue he offered) this week. I shared the same hope that one of those who had expressed interest will pick it up.

Take from that what you will.

Hmm. It's good to know that issue #5 is being worked on by Greg Weisman. I just hope we get issue #2 before he starts working on issue #9. I'd rather have a backlog of issues waiting to be drawn than the artist waiting for issues to draw.

Anybody seen Vash lately?

I still haven't heard anything back from SLG about whether or not their Arkansas retailer really exists. The telephone on the website for that retailer doesn't work and I can't find the name of that business in the online yellow pages looking in my area. If they can't keep their list of retailers (and contacts for the retailers) accurate on the website, I feel nervous about the company.

Whatever happenned to simplicity?

Though many people here are concerned over the way that the release keeps on getting delayed by one month after another - which is the real issue, I suspect.

Greg Weisman mentioned today at "Ask Greg" that the comic would be going back to bimonthly after all (let's hope that he wasn't misinformed).

Blaise> *raises hand* I own all the Marvel comics; most of the Disney Adventures ones (May, Nov 1995; May, July, Aug, Dec 1996; and Jan 1997); and even the Oct 19-25, 1996 TV Guide with a 3-page Halloween comic (if anyone else has this, do you know what Elisa's costume is?).
Anyone know all the Disney Adventures issues that had Gargoyles comics?

Actually, the 2-part comic with the Fealty Rose was titled "Lines of Allegiance".

I got a good laugh from the bit in "All in a Night's Work" (7/96) where Bronx digs a bed into the "porch" in front of the clock, and Elisa giving Bronx an entire trash bag full of Milkbones.

I also have the 10/96 and 11/96 issues where there are just 2-page ads for TGC in each. The 10/96 issue has a really, really, really nice image of Demona and Macbeth facing off in the foreground with Goliath entering through an archway in the background. Too bad it's too small to really make out details.

Comic> I've been reading comics for a while and believe it or not, I've seen delays that were equally or more ridiculous. But this is pretty troubling. I don't want to start throwing out hypotheses or pointing talons (if you will), as we unfortunately don't have any idea what's causing the holdup beyond the initial report of an "art delay" (which could be anything from pencils to colors to quality issues to a scanner screw-up to just about anything). I'm guessing the reason nobody is saying anything is that nobody wants to cast any individual or company in a bad light, as it could just create additional trouble down the road.

The nig issue is that this delay is happening so early on in the comic's run. Delays are never really a good thing, but some products can survive them. I talked before about comics that are very creator driven, where the fanbase for the book are willing to wait for a creator to have time to finish a comic because the comic could not possibly be done by anyone else. Unfortunately, "Gargoyles" does not have that status yet because it has just started as a comic and the more casual readers may not know who Greg Wiesman iis and how essential his participation is to making a "Gargoyles" comic work. (This is a moot point anyways, as I'm almost 100% certain he is not the cause of the delay. It's nice to know he's working on issue #5, but even issue #3 currently seems a very long way off.) There are also comics, and other properties, that are simply so popular that they will still sell even if they miss one or more announced release dates. Was I upset when "Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" didn't come out on time and ended up being delayed for about a year? Yup. Am I still going to plunk down my money to see Link turn into a wolf when it does come out? You betcha. But again, "Gargoyles" cannot afford to do this yet. Sure, we're willing to wait; we'll still buy it if it comes out in December or (heaven forbid) later. But casual fans are less likely to do so. We know the show and love the property enough to stick with it. But to the general comics reader, this may as well be a new book, with only a TV shows that debuted 12 years ago - two thirds of which is on DVD - to back it upas anything else. As more time passes, more and more of them will forget the first issue and any excitement they had for reading a second. Quite a few comics never get past issue #1, so casual readers may assume a second issue just isn't going to happen. Heck, some fans of the series moved on years ago. What's to stop the people who have no clue who Broadway is from doing the same in a couple of months. The more time you make people do without something, the more likely they are to decide they really *can* do without it.

I think Disney pulling the plug on the Slave Labor deal prematurely is unlikely. The other Disney/SLG books seem to come out with decent regularity. I doubt Disney will see the long delay of issue #2 as harming their property; remeber that this is a property they've had little to no interest in for almost a deacde. Should Disney decide to end SLG's license, either when it comes up for renewal or prematurely, I don't know that they would seek out another publisher to handle "Gargoyles". If this doesn't pan out, it may well be that we get absolutely nothing.

****Blaise walks into the Room through the doorway, carting along a rather large, fierce-looking Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin. He sets it on the banquet table.****
Just my way of saying HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

HARVESTER> This is a response to something last week (sorry it took so long to get back to you):
I saw that particular STAR WARS joke through an "On Demand" selection--it was part of what was listed as the 11th ep of "Robot Chicken." I have seen the little movie you linked, though--funny!

COMIC DELAY> Unfortunate to be sure (I mean, as originally scheduled, the third issue, the FIRST NEW GARGOYLES story in 10 years, and a Halloween themed one at that, would have been out by now). But, what can I do about it (other than make sure I have the money set aside so that I can get it when it comes out)? So, I'm not going to get too angry about it.

SPEAKING OF GARGOYLES COMICS...> (Something in the way of a topic for the rest of the week.)
Who here owns (or has read scans of) the other GARGOYLES comics? Not just the 11 issue Marvel run, but even the (*shudder*) Disney Adventures comics.
I own only about 6 of the Marvel series (issues 1, 7, 8, 10 and 11), but I've read scans of them all on line. I'll admit, from what I remember, they were pretty good. It had a few problems here and there (inexplicable redesigns for some characters--"blonde Bluestone"--and some odd touches--the surfing Trio, complete with "surfer duds"...ugh), but overall, it seemed to take the property seriously and treated it with respect. It was also pretty dark and mature (people definitely died here) but not really in any gratuitous sense, so it earns my respect there. It's not cannon, true (a few small things run counter to the series), but...well, let me put it this way: I'll take this over TGC any day of the week.
The Disney Adventures comics, however...well, it was a magazine for kids, so (with the exception of Michael Reaves, who wrote the first comic--a sort of "meet the characters" thing) the writers probably had a far more limited audience in mind. That's not to say that some interesting stories didn't occur (I thought the "Rose of Fealty" was all right) and one comic did inspire the story for THE PRICE, but usually the stories were a bit..."simpler" let's say. Oh, and at times, the art could be fairly terrible.
So...anyone else have any thoughts to share?

Anyhow, I'd better get back to Halloween festivities. Until next time, farewell. ****Blaise turns to leave, but the Jack-O-Lantern opens its mouth impossibly wide and gulps him down before he can take another step. The Jack-O-Lantern then settles back onto the table.****

I agree. I mean if it is going to take 6 months or (god help us) more, some changes may have to be made. I also agree with DPH that if the delay is because of any new enhancements, I would be willing to wait. Plus, since it's taking this long, fans may not even know that the second issue is even in their local comic book stores, but I know we all have faith.

Humans are such easy prey for a gargoyle!

So, when does Disney pull the plug on SLG? This relationship appears to me to be doing nothing but damaging their properties. If I were Disney, and saw my property going from a bi-weekly to quarterly (if even that anymore), and the second issue of a title which sold out the first issue pushed back four (!) months, I'd completely pull out of any current and future dealings with SLG. Since Issue #1 did sell out, I'd be pursuing moving the title back to Marvel, to DC, Iron Horse or some other established company that has shown the ability to meet deadlines.

Sorry for the double post, but there is at least one good bit of news, Greg W just said in Ask Greg that he is currently writing Issue#5!!!

Of course, the thing that is really worrying people is Issue#2. Even I am beginning to come up with a hypothesis concerning the delay. But, I'm not gonna spill it out here at the risk of starting a flame war. The important thing to remember is that we all want the comic to succeed. And right now, we are not sure if it is succeeding or not. Information would help indeed.

This is silly. They need to tell us what is going wrong, and provide some kind of assurance that the thing is actually being written at all. And pick a real date, for goodness sakes! Even if it's in March next year, as long as the date is assured and doesn't keep changing.

I have more complaints, than just being moved back to December release. According to the new production schedule, cemeterians gets issue #4, Emo Boy gets issue #10, **before** we get issue **#2** of Gargoyles. If this delay is about achieving higher quality, then, yes, I can wait longer. If this delay is about making sure slg doesn't run out of copies before they release, then I can wait longer. If this is about the graphic artist not getting work turned in on time, . . .

Information would dispell rumors and ease tensions rather than the lack of information creating paranoia.

Humans are such easy prey for a gargoyle!

I think the difference with "redneck" versus other racial slurs is that 1. it's not actually considered an insult to be called a redneck by many people who fit the description of "redneck" and 2. it implies more of a mindset than an actual race. Rednecks tell redneck jokes -- and are often proud of their redneck status.

(And for the record -- I score pretty high on the redneck litmus test.)

As far as what rednecks do on Halloween -- probably pack the kids up and go trick or treating in town. The cityfolk give out better candy, and you don't have to worry about getting eaten by the neighbor's sixteen loose dogs or tripping over the lawnmower buried in the waist deep grass ...

Michael Reaves and Diane Duane (writers for Gargoyles) developed a script for Star Trek: TNG back in the days of it's conception. The script eventually became the episode we know as "Where No One Has Gone Before" - the one where "the traveler" is introduced.

Long story short, Diane has posted to her blog about this experience (inspired to do so by Wil Wheaton's review of the episode at tvsquad.com) and has included a draft premise and outline of the episode she and Michael wrote. It's an interesting read on behind-the-scenes stuff in television production and fun for any trekkie. I figure the tie-in to their later work on Gargoyles more than validates me posting this here, hah!

Re: BatB downloadable .....? *vrrrrroooooms* off to the likely suspects for video downloads. I'd buy it on DVD if it was available!

Season 3 was pretty sorry in many ways. I actually liked Diana, however, and wished they'd handled the plot better. My personal .02 is that they PROBABLY could have gotten away with killing Catherine in in a heroic fashion -- she saves Vincent's neck at the cost of her own life or something like that -- IF they had introduced Diana BEFOREHAND and established her as a different-but-viable female lead. Because there's an awful lot of subjects that they could have touched on that the core audience would have watched. THough replacing Hamilton would been a viable option too, IMHO.

Leva - [leva at firefox dot org]

Leva> I adored your Gargoyles/BatB crossover! I read it years and years ago, and I remember being so, so impressed with the way you managed to "fix" things believably. How Goliath's relationship with Demona might be viewed very differently by someone of Vincent's background. How Demona's actions had consequences; she didn't quite "get away with it" scott-free. I'll be quiet in case anyone here hasn't read it and wants to, but I loved it :)

I was a little thing when Beauty and the Beast aired, but my mother watched it. I clearly remember my mother talking about Catherine being killed so that Linda Hamilton could leave the show, and even at that age I remember thinking, "That's stupid, how can they kill off one of the main characters?" I've since downloaded all the eps and watched a good number of them, but I haven't bothered with the 3rd season. I agree with what you said; the show was about the fantasy, this special bond between two people, and violently killing off one of them pretty much ruins it <g>. As jarring as it would have been to have a different actress, I think I'd have preferred it.

Long time, no post, here.

On replacing character voices -- quite honestly, I think this would be easier to do than you'd think. Most viewers wouldn't notice -- I'm specifically thinking of Rouruni Kenshin, which had more than one voice actor playing Kenshin. I believe there are plenty of other examples, but that's the first one that comes to mind. Given how easily skilled voice actors can change their voices, it should be fairly simple to find someone who can sound like someone else, or a reasonable facsimile.

I'm sure they could find someone who sounds reasonably similar for anyone who couldn't come back to Gargs. Plus, it's been thirteen years. A new version of Gargs would have fans who weren't ALIVE when the show first aired, much less remember what all the characters sound like.

Re: Beauty and the Beast/Cathy Chandler -- I agree that they should have just replaced Linda Hamilton. However, part of the issue with Beauty and the Beast was the whole concept of the story was that Vincent saved Cathy from peril once a week, and then there was a romantic interlude. (Or vice versa.) The show's audience was largely women going, "Awwwwwwww ..." and wishing they had their own personal Vincent. Beauty and the Beast was very much an escapist fantasy ... and trust me, I loved this show! First they changed the tone and made it very bloody and violent (thereby offending quite a few fans) and then they TORTURED Catherine to death in a rather gruesome way. It was horrible, and painful, and no fun at all, and ruined the fantasy entirely.

Spen> You're right on all counts. I too recall Lucky just being transferred, though I don't recall the entire plotline of that particular ep.

KingCobra_582 - [KingCobra_582 at hotmail dot com]
Today I am 24.

Shara : Not exactly. For one thing, the "Miranda episodes" were created first, back when the show was under Dune Cappizzi. I believe that Greg worked on the original development. However, for some reason that I can no longer recall, the show was handed over to Robert "Goof Troop" Taylor. He changed the show concept significantly, and one of the changes was introducing Lucky Piquel as Bonkers' partner. Later in the season, the "Miranda episodes" were aired. To bridge the gap between the two concepts, an episode was written that featured Lucky being replaced by Miranda. Now, I haven't seen that episode since it first aired, but I can't recall Lucky dying during that episode. I seem to remember that he was transferred for some reason. Whichever it was, the voice actor's death most certainly didn't cause the change. As it is, I believe that Jim Cummings voiced Lucky, so the voice actor probably didn't die.

I do not suffer fools, gladly or otherwise.

Re replacing characters> The example that always comes to my mind is the 80s show Beauty and the Beast. Iirc, Linda Hamilton, who played Catherine (the 'Beauty'), was having a baby and wanted to leave the show. So they killed off her character and tried to continue without her. Which was less than successful, since you can't particularly have a show called Beauty and the Beast and then kill off Beauty. (They did introduce another female lead, but it was hard for a lot of fans to get over Catherine's death.) In that case, I feel like it could have been better to get a different actress than kill the character altogether.

But that's my opinion, and admittedly I was like 5 when it happened. I've only seen downloaded reruns.
