Last post of the week I guess, minus whatever.

Heh, you said. But some people don't realize it. People are stupid that way.

Oh hey, everyone. I tell you I'm writing a Gargoyles story, with OCs (I know a lot of people don't like that), who would read it?

NinjaSheik

I think it's called Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity."

I'm inclined to believe that even the average terrorist is more stupid than malicious.

Not that it matters, really: Acts of stupidity are potentially just as deadly as acts of malice. Broadway playing with Elisa's gun, for example...

Well, what do Fang and Faisal Shahzad have in common? They're both morons ;)

I still think that the highlight of that event was Fang grumbling about how Sevarius just *had* to have the mutagen release at midnight, without installing something that would allow Fang to activate it a few minutes ahead of schedule in case of attack from the Redemption Squad, all because of the doc's love of drama.
Todd Jensen

Patrick> Oh, I'm sure he can survive any retribution ala the Libyans in Back to the Future d: . . . as Bruno said in "Monsters", "Dr. Sevarius has more lives than than an ally cat..."

"Really thought I ended you son, but you got more lives than a bag of cats"

Hmmm . . . Bruno sure sounds like Spec Spidey's Shocker, doesn't he? ;-)

Another note about the "mutate bomb".

The actual effects would not have been realized until at least the following afternoon, if not longer. The metamorphosis is a slow process, as we had seen.

Michael Ejercito - [mejercit at hotmail dot com]

Are we sure that the armored mutates and the mutate bomb were funded by the same person or group? It's possible that Sevarius may have been hired to both test out the possibilities of mutate soldiers and create some of terrorist attack on New York and decided to kill two birds with one stone. I wouldn't put it past Sevarius to be hired to created some kind of major, fear inspiring disruption of the New Year's festivities and decide to put his own particular spin on it. On the flip side, I also wouldn't put it past him to come up with the bomb plot as a way to study the effects of mutation on a wider pool of test subjects even that wasn't specifically in the job description from his client. Like the man said, he is all about the drama.
Demonskrye - [<---"Either Or" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

LANDON> That seems plausible, though Sevarius said he was hired to create mutates based on armoured animals which implies to me that who ever he was working for was more interested in making super-soldiers then terrorising New York. Anyway Sevarius himself said that the Times Square attack was a way of testing his mutagen on as wide a test sample as possible rather then having to make do with whatever handful of homeless he could abduct without anyone noticing.
Algernon

Greg B: Wow, I really go like that theory. I actually think that the mutate bomb would cause even more chaos than a typical nerve gas or explosive bomb. I mean, just imagine what panic the world would go through! The gargoyles would probably get blamed some, and mass panic would ensue. If the purpose of the terrorist attack was to cause panic instead of simple death, it fits perfectly to me. Of course, there could be plenty of other reasons, but I like the terrorist idea myself. Someone would have to get a lot of money to hire Sevarius to do something like that though...

We treat the weirdness of some of this cartoon without much afterthought now, but imagine a whole crowd transforming into animals nowadays? That would change the world. Everyone panicked after the reveal of the gargoyles, and that was after 2 years of rumors popping up.

I wouldn't put it past Sevarius to promise a nerve gas delivery system to the terrorists in order to get funding, then swap it out for his own experiment.
Landon Thomas - [<- Gargoyles News Twitter Feed]

GREG B> It's an interesting theory but I'm doubtful, turning everyone in Times Square into half animal mutants seems like an overly complicated way to launch a terrorist attack. It'd probably be easier just to load the ball with nerve gas or something, unless you're Cobra, in which case the attack would also involve robot dinosaurs and somekind of crystal that controls plants.

On a related note has anyone ever speculated on what the CoS terrorists' goals actually were? I remember Greg saying he wanted to avoid using fictional countries or politicians in the gargverse whenever possible, so I'm guessing they're rooted in real world politics as opposed to the Latvarian Liberation Front or what have you.

Is there someway to up up this "bible" on the wiki?

Here is tonight's theory:

So, while working on GargWiki, I was reminded that the terrorist from "City of Stone" would have reappeared in "Bad Guys" eventually, and her cause would have been revealed.

http://gargoyles.dracandros.com/Terrorist

Now, I also remember some people here complaining about Sevarius's plan in the Bad Guys miniseries, that plan being to mutate everyone at Times Square. People seemed unhappy at the size and the scope of such a thing and were wondering exactly what Sevarius, or what whoever hired him would have to gain from this.

It hit me that such a thing is an act of terrorism just as much as anything... and when the word terrorism entered by head, this theory hit me like a truck.

What if Sevarius was hired by either this terrorist, or whatever larger terrorist network she is a part of (no guarantee she is the leader). What if that was the goal? We know Sevarius is willing to do freelance work for anyone who'll pay his fee.

Battle Beast> I would guess someone else either sold their copy or gave it away to someone who sold it. I don't recall the listing for the auction I won saying anything about the seller being someone who worked on the show, so I'm guessing it passed through a few hands before ending up in mine.

Roy> Thanks for the info from the artist's side of it. Always good to hear from someone who was actually part of the process.

Demonskrye - [<---"Either Or" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

That 'bible' initially got us artists, directors, supervisors into the project. From there, a visual one is created for in house and outsourcing needs. It's basically a collection of model sheets of characters, props, backgrounds, walkcycles, color samples,...anything that would be needed to keep the show visually consistent. Then every episode would have it's own mini 'bible.' There are episode specific characters, props, backgrounds and colors.

If anyone pays attention to the credits, the unsung heroes of these designs/drawings were Kazuyoshi Takeuchi and Takeshi Atomura, to name a few.

Demonskrye> But how did it end up on eBay? Did Greg W.Sell it or someone else sell it?

Pardon the double post.

Bettle Beast> "Book" may give youa slightly incorrect impression; the series bible has a paper cover and is stapled together. Nothing too fancy.

Here's a version of the bible for Batman: TAS:

http://www.worldsfinestonline.com/WF/batman/btas/backstage/wbible/

Demonskrye - [<---"Either Or" at The Ink and Pixel Club]

Baatle Beast> A series bible is a book that explains the basics of a show - the protagonists, the antagonists, their world and how it works, the major character relationships, etc. - to the people who will be working on the show. Particularly, it gives the various writers something to reference when they're working on scripts, as it can get pretty tough to keep all of this info straight, especially when a writer is working on several shows at once. They're sometimes also used to let other interested parties - potential cast members or merchandisers - see what the show is going to be like. I believe the line "Hudson hates spunk" comes from a version of the series bible. It was intended to help convince Ed Asner to play Hudson.

The series bible is usually revised a few times during the shows development and a new version will often be produced for each new season, which is usually when new characters and concepts are introduced.

I think Greg Weisman wrote most or all of the Gargoyles series bible. The art I'm less sure about. It may well be the work of multiple artists.

I have a copy of the series bible (also from ebay) kicking around somewhere, though I have no idea where it might be at this moment.

Greg B> What exactly is that book, and other than eBay, where did it come from? Who wrote it? er, drew it?

It's hard to tell because of the quality of the xerox, but I'm wondering if there was already some idea of who was going to voice Dingo at this point because, to my eyes at least, early design Dingo looks just abit like Jim Cummings:

Thanks for the pictures, Bishansky.

Speaking of Dingo, I can't remember if I've mentioned this before, but in the picture of the Illuminati's treasury on Eastcheap in "Bad Guys" - take a look at the upper right hand corner, just above the two shields. Maybe it's just my imagination (and the proportions aren't entirely right), but it looks as if the Illuminati have added the TARDIS to their collection.

Todd Jensen

Pretty interesting picture. What strikes me most is how much actually ended up in the show. Dingo aside, the human Pack members look pretty much how they did on the show. An extra cape here or high heeled shoe there, but costume and appearence all look spot on for the most part.

GREG B.> It weird but everytime I look at that pic I can't help hearing the Thundercats theme song in my head.

About ten years ago, I bought a xeroxed copy of the Gargoyles Series Bible on ebay. I know, probably a waste of money, but there was a gem in there which, to this day, I have never seen on the internet. So, I finally got this page scanned.

This here is an early, unused design of the Pack. If you wanted to see what CY.O.T.I. was originally going to look like before he evolved into the half Xanatos robotic skull we all know and love, click on my link.

Oh, and Dingo as you've never, ever seen him before.

I guess this Dingo would have eventually become Hunter's spinner. ;)

Volpe: One thing I learned very early on was that it was usually better to ask the questions to the CR, because I was never sure if a question had already been asked and always got too many results when I browsed the ASK GREG archives. The people who check ASK GREG more regularly than I do have always been helpful.

Battle Beast> My belated condolences on Kenya's passing.

Tony> I'm not an expert on this, but I think what you would want to do is first make a couple of trial run recordings for yourself to get a sense of what you want on the final demo. Then start googling and calling up recording studios in your area, the type where you can rent a booth for a block of time and make a recording. You can ask if they can do the editing there or you can try to find someone online who can edit a digital copy of your demo. Keep in mind I have zero direct experience with this so if someone who does tells you different, you might want to listen to them.

I would strongly recommend that you read Mark Evanier's FAQ on getting into voice acting (link below). Evanier's a really smart guy, knows tons of very famous voice actors, and has worked on more animated show than it is practical to list. He's a little more pessimistic on the chances of a newcomer making a living at voice acting than it sounds like your teacher was. I'm not saying one view is right or wrong, but I think you should probably be aware of both so that you can start forming a realistic picture of what you may be up against. Evanier is mainly talking about voice work for animation, which is not the only kind out there and may not be what you're looking to do, but I think the basics apply across the board.

http://www.povonline.com/Voicework.htm

You'll note than Evanier regards doing voice work long distance as a possibility, but still recommends that aspiring voice actors locate as close as possible to one of the cities where most of the work is. While it's possible to use the magic of the Internet and do voice work for a studio in California from Georgia or wherever, it's still kind of a pain, especially for the studio. Unless you happen to have a professional quality recording setup in your home, you still have to get yourself to a local recording studio. And the company that you're working for has to keep their fingers crossed that the people at the studio where you're recording know what they're doing, will record in the format they need with the level of quality they need, won't accidentally send the files to Narnia, etc. Add in the possible need to contact you to come back in for retakes and the potential time difference and you can see what a headache this can be. You want to make it as easy as possible for people to give you work. Being good at voice acting is part of that, but being convenient to work with is a factor too.

On the other hand, you'll notice that Evanier advises aspiring voice actors to ease into the work and not to put their whole future on the line for a career with no guarantee of success or steady work. Moving is a pretty big step. One suggestion that I've read is to see what voice acting opportunities their are closer to you. Someone has to be the announcer for the local car dealership ad or do the station IDs for the local radio stations. There are probably fewer jobs in an area that isn't near a big media city and it isn't glamorous work. But there's also less competition and you'll be building a resume, showing that you know the basics of the business and getting a feel for whether this is something you want to do long term.

Good luck!

<Pizza> Never mind, guys. I actually found the answer over at the Ask Greg section. Normally, I check the archives first before asking anything here, but I wasn't sure if such a question would have been asked.

I'm sure almost everything has though, right? ^^

<Anthony> That profession sounds great! I don't know much about it but I wish you luck on your endeavor!

I wanted to ask the room something. I remember learning from one of my Gargoyles coloring books that Brooklyn hates pizza but does that apply to the other Manhattan Gargoyles, do you think? It's hard to imagine Broadway turning any food down but I just wanted to know if anyone knew for sure if all the Manhattan clan has a distaste for it.

I'm aware that the pizza-hating move was made to separate the Gargoyles from the TMNT.

At my local university, I took a class called "Introduction to Voiceovers". The class was taught by a gentleman named Mike who lives in Florida, but the company that is responsible for the class is called "Voices For All" based out of Albany, NY.

He stressed that it's a great time to get into the voice acting world, and anyone can do it thanks to the invention of the internet. The first thing that he recommended was to get a "demo" done. Do any of you know anyone in the PA/NY area that I could go to that would help me do that? Or maybe point me in the right direction? Thanks.
