That reminds me. Yesterday, because it was Passover (and "The Ten Commandments" was showing on ABC), I decided to reread the entry on Moses in the GargWiki. But I'd forgotten that the day before yesterday, Good Friday, would have been equally appropriate to reread the pieces on the Spear of Destiny and the Crown of Thorns in the entry on "Religious Studies 101". Still, after seeing Bishansky's post, I realized that I could still reread those for Easter, two days late - and so did just that.

One problem which prevents the Helpers from doing more is having multiple questions in one post. If there's one question which they can't answer, the whole thing waits for Greg. I think a new rule is needed to limit the length of a post, especially if the Helpers can answer "SPOILER REQUEST." (Reviews/rambles should be an exception, since Greg has asked for those and they can't be split into multiple posts.)

Greg prefers fewer questions per post, too, since answering them is easier on him. (http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=11 and http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=19)

Exactly, you're giving them way too much credit.

One idea I had as a question was asking if the real names of the remaining Pack members would ever be revealed, since we now know of two already. Fox (Janine Renard) and Dingo (Harry Monmouth) respectively. If anyone really wants to try to post that, I don't mind.

MASTERDRAMON - I hope you can fix those problems with your computer. I remember a few years ago a lot of people (including me) were unable to access Station 8 because of a quarrel between two big Internet service providers (I think); it was nasty.

One solution that seems tempting would be to interpret any and all "Will such-and-such-a-character appear/return?" queries as ideas masquerading as questions. I know that Greg's begun to place "Will such-and-such-a-legendary-or-literary-character appear in 'Gargoyles'?" in that category, so we'd have a precedent for it.

I think a ramble up on the front page about why asking for spoilers is not a good idea (and stressing why they're called "spoilers") might bring home the message to a few, though I suspect that most of the people asking these questions are too impatient to care.

Todd Jensen

Supermorff> True, but I think even taking out just the "Will X appear?" type questions would make a HUGE difference.
Algernon

Allowing Masterdramon and Todd to use the SPOILER REQUEST template response would definitely cut down on the questions, but there would have to be incredibly tight controls over what counted as a spoiler request. Asking if certain things will happen, or characters will appear (i.e. things in the future), probably count. But asking about events in the backstory aren't as clear.

Personally, I agree with Masterdramon that letting the Ask Greg helpers use the standard "SPOILER REQUEST, NO COMMENT" response would drastically cut down on the queue without sacrificing legitimate questions.

My own problem with the "nuke" option, besides unfairly punishing the innocent along with the guilty, is that it doesn't really address the core problem.

Algernon

Called Walt Disney Home Entertainment and they said that they have tentative plans to release Gargoyles Season 2, Volume2 on DVD this year of 2012.

Phoenician: I completed work on the FAQ (which presently totals at 60-something pages) about three weeks ago, actually. But as it's necessarily modular, I haven't submitted it to Gore yet (although I can share the raw Word file if anyone's interested). The FAQ changes with the release of every new episode and new batch of AskGreg answers, so I at least am holding off on it until Season 1 is over.

Of course, my tenuous access to Station 8 is also a problem here. It'd make things a lot easier if I could edit the FAQ while it is up (though I'm not even sure if that's possibly), but if I can't even get on the site outside of work hours...

Personally, I say if you guys are going to auto-answer spoiler requests, I think at least occasionally it should just done with the following link:

There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

Masterdramon: Well, I imagine you and Todd will hear from GregW soon enough, but I'm all for you two helping respond to questions requesting spoilers with "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT." Frankly, it seems like whenever someone does consider asking the folks in the CR first, that's almost always the response we'll give . . .

Oh, btw, what's the latest on the Young Justice FAQ that you and Harlan Phoenix were working on? I would think once that goes live, it'll help with at least those that actually consider following the guidelines.

(and speaking of which,) Rebel: If anything, those two pages really should be updated to include one of Greg's most recent rambles, where he himself added to the original set of guidelines: http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?rid=925

That, and alongside the window that pops to ask "Have you've checked the archives?" really should also include asking if the poster has checked the unanswered questions as well (heh, maybe it already does, I haven't added to the queue since after the first YJ hiatus ended) . . . .

Phoenician
"The suspense is terrible . . . I hope it lasts," -- Willy Wonka

Gonna chime in here. I would have sooner, but I'm afraid I've been having problems accessing S8 from home again since Tuesday night. XP

Personally, while I'm all for tightening the guidelines (though I think the up-down vote system, while a good idea in theory, might not work so well in practice), there's at least one thing I think could be done to drastically shorten the present queue: allowing the helpers (i.e. Todd and I) to answer "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT." ourselves. With at least five questions in the queue solely being some variation of "Will the Joker appear again?" I think this would the single most effective way to make a dent in the queue (short of the "nuclear option," which I can't advocate on principle).

Plus, it would send a clear message if a good 100-150 questions suddenly went into the outbox in a row with nothing but that message. Frankly, a lot of people need to be reminded (or taught) that Greg W. seeing and answering your questions is a privilege...not a right. And like all privileges, there's no guarantee you'll keep it if you don't treat it with respect.

I'd have suggested this idea to Greg W. himself by now, but my present sketchiness with S8 access is delaying me; I don't want to bring up the idea to him until I can back it up with a good, thorough queue-clearing, which I can't really do from work.

Todd, what do you think?

What about banning Young Justice questions?

I'm half-joking...

Which implies that I'm half-serious...

I don't much care for the idea, but it sure would stop a lot of problems. That said, we've had backlogs long before Young Justice and Spectacular Spider-Man entered the scene. So, I doubt it is really much of a solution. Still, even as a big Spec. Spider-Man fan, all the non-Gargoyles related questions irked me. And Young Justice is even worse. It is Greg's call though, not mine.

And for the record, we all talked about deleting the queue a long time ago and Greg vetoed the idea then, so I doubt he'll approve of it now.

"...nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." - Ripley, "Aliens"

One thing I've decided from all this; I don't think I'll ever work on a DC Comics-based project (unless in a behind-the-scenes capacity). Not that I'd be a good choice to work on one, since I'm not familiar enough with the property, but if that would lead to such a volume of questions as we've seen in the queue from the "Young Justice" viewers, I would not want to be at the receiving end.

REBEL> What happens when, let's say, the YJ fans downvote a "Gargoyles" question just for not being a YJ question?
Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-by-Fours]
"Brave words for a man who hides his face behind a hood." - Goliath, "The Journey."

Sorry for the double. I left this part out.

With the upvote/downvote thing, a post with a high enough vote gets qualified to send to Greg, but a post with a low score is automatically or manually deleted.

Rebel

What I'd really like to see is for the guidelines to just become stricter and anything that doesn't follow the guidelines being deleted.

I think the only official lists of rules or guidelines are on these pages:
http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/ask.php
http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/index.php

What I'd like to see is a few new rules added, and if even one question in a person's list of questions violates a rule, kick the whole post out. If the person reads the rules they will be able to figure out why their post was kicked out and they can re-post with the offending question omitted if they really want their question/review to be seen by Greg.

Here are some rules I'd like to see put in place:
1. No spoiler requests (especially since Greg is just going to say "SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT." anyway, so there's no point in the question even getting through).
2. No asking questions that have already been answered (especially since Greg is just going to say "Asked and Answered.")
3. No asking questions that are of a pointless nature or questions that try to "trap" Greg in a mistake. I.e. "How old is Zatanna?", "What color are Artemis' eyes?", or "In episode X so-and-so's magic glowed this color and in episode Y so-and-so's magic glowed this color, why is that?" This rule might not be the best idea because deciding which questions are which would be very subjective.

Another thing that might be nice is some kind of downvoting/upvoting system that sends questions to Greg. I don't know if anyone here has the technical know-how for that, but the idea is that all the un-answered questions would show up together in one area, and people could upvote quality questions/reviews and downvote reviews/questions that they think aren't quality. This might help ensure that really stupid posts never make it to Greg.

Rebel

I guess this is why I'll never be put in charge of the queue, but if it were me, I would just delete all 700 questions.

I guess I just have too much of a "No nonsense" attitude at times. I think Greg had enough trouble keeping up with questions back when it was just Gargoyles, and he's only one man. The people abusing it need to learn that if they're going to abuse, there won't be a queue at all.

I don't see this as disrespectful to Greg Weisman in any way, but I'm sure he'd disagree, just because he's such a great guy like that.

I'm not suggesting you guys really do that. I know you won't, and I know a lot of you have questions that you're waiting for him to resolve, that you want answers to. But it's just how I'd do it. I think there are times when you have to say "Enough is enough," and when a few months of abuse have gotten you to an even worse point than the time it took him two years to catch up, that time has come.

Arlo
Gargoyles need not apply.

MATT> And it's a good one.

I really hate that we are having this conversation, but ASK GREG has been abused to hell and back over the last several months. We've had a great system in place since 1997, and now. Remember when the queue was two years behind? We have more questions in the queue now than we did back then.

Just my opinion.

Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-by-Fours]
"Brave words for a man who hides his face behind a hood." - Goliath, "The Journey."

I doubt it'll be wiped, but if it is, please give warning so I can copy (and ultimately paste) my questions.

I'm kind of surprised that the queue has gotten so large. I have a hard time believing that the remaining 700 questions are all legitimate and fall under the guidelines Greg set forth.

Anyway, I'd say close the queue again. In fact, I think that the queue should only be open for, like, three days a month or something. Anyone with a well thought out question that follows the rules and that can't get an answer here or in the archives can save the question and submit it at that time. Same goes for reviews. Having only a small asking window would limit the random "drive-by" posters, the impatient pleas and resulting backlog. It would also give Greg time to handle each batch.

Just my two cents.

"...nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure." - Ripley, "Aliens"

TODD> At this point, I favor the nuclear option... and I still have some in there myself. But... nuke it, start over. The decent questions will get re-posted
Greg Bishansky - [<--- Greg's Blog of Clue-by-Fours]
"Brave words for a man who hides his face behind a hood." - Goliath, "The Journey."

Greg's barely answered any questions since the queue opened about a month ago; almost all of his posts at "Ask Greg" have been rambles. Presumably he's been so busy lately that he hasn't had time to answer the questions.

But the queue's grown to an alarming size; over 700 questions by now. I thought of suggesting that "Ask Greg" be closed down again until Greg has the time to answer questions (and can whittle the size of the queue down), but then people wouldn't be able to submit reviews of the new episodes. I then wondered whether the queue could be changed to "reviews only", though it might be too late by now.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

I also don't think the Manhattan Clan will return to the Clock Tower.... the Clock Tower was more like an "emergency shelter" and they actually didn't live there for a long time...

I wonder how long it will be before the conspiracy theories start (assuming they haven't started already) that Marvel Comics secretly bought a controlling interest in Cartoon Network and cite that as the reason for the frequent "Young Justice" hiatuses. I know nobody can really answer this question, but i'm going to ask it anyway! Does anybody know why the CN handled the Young Justice series the way they did?? Having all those breaks in the series!! The series started late in 2010 and is just completing the first season in April 2012. What was the Cartoon network thinking??
CHLJ - [charles.lott2@live.com]

We know the Manhattan Clan will continue living at Castle Wyvern atop the Eyrie Building/Pyramid for the next two centuries (though I suppose it is possible they could relocate and return again in that time, but I doubt it). So, why would they keep their eggs at the Clock Tower? That doesn't seem safe or efficient. And I doubt the Tower would be an ideal rookery anyway.

I think the Manhattan Rookery will be constructed in the rocky foundation of Castle Wyvern just as it was a thousand years ago. Some parts of it, such as the main door that leads into the Castle Courtyard may still exist. This could be what Greg was referring to in response to my question (ten years ago!) about the rookery both being transported and being constructed.

MASTERDRAMON - I still wonder whether a lot of these spoiler questions are fueled by anxiety about those past hiatuses, and fear that the Cartoon Network may end up cancelling "Young Justice" before the rest of the episodes will air.

PHOENICIAN - I hope my local library will get that set when it comes out in three months.

Interesting thought about the gargoyles someday reclaiming the clock tower. I doubt it would happen for a long time; for one thing, they're publicly linked to it after Jon's broadcast, so it wouldn't be a safe haven. (The same thing could be said about the castle, but at least Xanatos's defense system can keep enemies out; the clock tower doesn't have the same advantage.) Maybe after the Gargoyle Minority Protection Act, it would be safe for them to return, but I doubt that would be passed for a long time (especially since we know it only happens after Goliath's death - and I think that Greg would be putting it off for as long as he could, since the series would be too different without Goliath around. Goliath's sacrifice would have to be reserved for the series finale).

Todd Jensen

Well, its not a season set, but the remaining 14 episodes of Young Justice that haven't been released in the first three volumes are getting released in a two-disc set this July . . .

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Young-Justice-Dangerous-Secrets/16767

Still waiting to see any official word on a complete first season set myself . . . but as it eventually became clear with the second season of The Spectacular Spider-Man, I'll be happy just have the episodes on DVD in any fashion.

Rookeries: I've actually started musing the thought that in time, the Clock Tower might be fashioned into a new rookery for the Manhattan Clan. Now, there's nothing to support or indicate this from what Greg's already revealed in the archives (that I've found so far) . . . if anything, a question asked by Matt back in 2004 is answered in a way that suggests just the opposite and would have the rookery somewhere in the Eyrie Building (http://www.s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/search.php?qid=6542). Still, I thought it was a cool little musing that came to mind when reading the posts from earlier this week. d:

"The suspense is terrible . . . I hope it lasts," -- Willy Wonka

Colton: The only answer you're going to get on that question (and on every other question in your recent AskGreg post other than the last one) is: SPOILER REQUEST. NO COMMENT.

I don't want to pick on you too much, since you're hardly the only one to do it...but really, Greg Weisman has emphasized dozens of times over that he will not answer anything relating to future developments in the show. Not one single thing. It ruins the suspense if he just goes ahead and gives out spoilers to anyone who asks.

Just be patient and watch the show to find out. Greg W. has said that Queen Mera's due date is February, and Season 1 ends on December 31st. Do the math from there.

Now, this is probably coming off a little crueller than intended. But I'll admit, going through the approval process for spoiler request after spoiler request, which bog down the queue and make it that much harder for Greg W. to get to the questions he WILL answer...it gets grating. Very, very grating.

But again, exercise just that little bit of patience and restraint; it'll make the show/comic that much more enjoyable in the long-run.

Heya guys! Normally I tend to be a lurker but I thought you guys might want to know that Disney Movie Rewards Facebook page has a poll right now one what your favorite Disney Afternoon show was. I don't understand what you're arguing. TGS and TGC's Illuminati have as much relevance to the Illuminati of "Gargoyles" (and this conversation) as Kentucky Fried Chicken does.

I think the broadcasting of the episodes in other countries before ours is frustrating, but they are never going to reach an agreement not to broadcast them ahead. When Warner Bros. sells off the international broadcasting rights, it's that overseas network's show to broadcast as they see fit. The executives have a responsiblity to fill time on the network and get advertisers. They have their own schedules and they're not going to modify theirs for our benefit.

MATT - Interesting theory about the Grail. It depends, of course, on how much it knows. The Grail of Malory would probably not be taken in, being a divine relic, but Greg will probably downplay its Christian elements in favor of its Arthurian elements (though he did mention Joseph of Arimathea's links to the Grail once at "Ask Greg", with the implication that those were real in the Gargoyles Universe).

I *have* wondered if Peredur might indeed be in a "If the Tsar only knew" situation towards the rest of the Illuminati. It may be significant that we don't see him dealing with anyone from the outside world in the Stone of Destiny story, letting Duval and Blanchefleur do all the talking with others (such as Blanchefleur picking up the Stone from Xanatos).

All of this is one reason why I want to see "Pendragon" come out someday. Another is my being an Arthurian buff, of course. And still another is the hints at the end of the Stone of Destiny story about the Illuminati's connections to King Arthur. Apparently Peredur's plans for the Society were to make the world ready for Arthur's return in 2198, so that he would have the resources he needed when he awoke and left Avalon. But Elisa awakening Arthur ahead of schedule has changed everything. Arthur won't be around now in 2198, when he's needed - unless the Illuminati can find a way of extending his life-span, which is likely in light of its leaders being originally from his time period. But will Arthur be willing to work with the Illuminati? If he learns as much about it as we know already, he probably wouldn't want to have dealings with it - while the Illuminati leadership would be desperately trying to get him to agree, for the sake of Britain's greatest hour of need (and in light of what's to happen in 2198, the world's greatest hour of need as well). This would offer an unusual and original "protagonist vs. antagonist" conflict, in which the antagonist isn't out to defeat, kill, or neutralize the protagonist, but wants to help him - but has different ideas of what the protagonist should be doing than the protagonist does.

I think it might be a good idea if episodes of "Young Justice" weren't released in the other countries ahead of the U.S., since it leads to the spread of spoilers. The British and U.S. publishers of the "Harry Potter" books eventually worked out an agreement to publish each book at the same time, rather than the British edition a few months ahead of the U.S. edition; maybe the different television stations in different countries need to make a similar agreement with "Young Justice".

Elliot> Not Greg and I don't know the reason for it, but it's pretty common for US cartoons to have more episodes aired overseas (like the Justice League, The Spectacular Spider-Man or Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes).
Antiyonder

Hey, Greg.

Elliot - [tobelliot@gmail.com]

Rookery> Given Katana's habit of carrying Egwardo around and the fact that Tachi's hatching is about 14 months away, it wouldn't surprise me if no rookery was created just yet. There may be a place where the egg is kept at times, especially during the day (and probably under Coldstone and Coldfire's supervision), but a dedicated rookery? Maybe not yet. Another thing to keep in mind is that Greg has mentioned that rookeries can be difficult to establish. This is why the Splinter Wyvern Clan took none of the eggs with them. We don't know enough about what makes a decent rookery, though I suspect cool, damp, cave-like conditions are ideal, and we don't know how easily a rookery could be created at the Eyrie. What we do know is that by the time Artus hatches (in 2018, less than six years to go, guys!) the Manhattan Clan will have a rookery and I doubt Artus's egg will be the only one there. Improved relations with the Xanatos family (specifically Alex) will probably facilitate this.

As for the Illuminati and the Holy Grail, I won't claim to be an expert in this area, but is it possible that the Grail is unaware of the Illuminati's doings over the last few centuries? If Peredur really is the "good" side of Duval, maybe he is the only side that the Grail ever sees. The Grail may think that the Illuminati is remaining true to its cause. Feel free to shoot this idea down, Todd et al.

"I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way." - Jessica Rabbit, "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"

SUPERMORFF - [I wonder if the habit of carrying their egg around might be hard for Brooklyn and Katana to break (in which case they wouldn't need a rookery).]

Since Katana was taking the egg with her to the fight with the Pack in Times Square at the end, very likely. (On the other hand, in "Religious Studies 101", she left it back at the castle, with Bronx and Fu-Dog to stand guard over it. Of course, it's not canon, but parts of that crossover did strike me as reflecting what likely would happen in canon, such as Brooklyn and Katana wanting the whole clan to raise Nashville, as per the Gargoyle Way.) Though building a new rookery would be a nice way of showing the sense of renewed hope for the clan.

Bishansky's theory was something like that, though I'll let him explain it. But I have been curious for a while about the Illuminati's ties with the Holy Grail. As I said, a lot of the things that the Society's done (the Quarrymen, the Hotel Cabal, the deals with organized crime, the theft of the Stone of Destiny, etc.) don't strike me as the kind of thing that the Grail would have approved of (at least, not based on its depiction in Malory). Also, a lot of the individual Illuminati members we've met (Xanatos, Thailog, Castaway, Mace Malone, Falstaff, etc.) wouldn't have been considered worthy of the Grail, again based on its depiction in Malory. So how do the Illuminati higher-ups at Carbonek continue to be its guardians; they can hardly be that ignorant of what's going on (at least, Duval and Blanchefleur can't, given their dealings with Xanatos and the theft of the Stone of Destiny).

Of course, also according to the Grail legends, some of the past guardians of the Holy Grail did some questionable things. King Pelles, for example, whom we saw teaming up with Merlin to borrow the Stone of Destiny and who crowned the young Arthur afterwards. In Malory, he knew that his daughter Elaine and Sir Lancelot were destined to be the parents of Sir Galahad. He also saw that Elaine was in love with Lancelot, but that Lancelot was only interested in Queen Guinevere. So he got Lancelot drunk and tricked him into thinking that Elaine was Guinevere, leading to Galahad's conception. If this happened in the Gargoyles Universe, the Fisher Kings must have been straying down the path of "end justifies the means" even before the Illuminati was founded.

Todd> I wonder if the habit of carrying their egg around might be hard for Brooklyn and Katana to break (in which case they wouldn't need a rookery). Or maybe within the coming year they might gain a couple of eggs from another clan (in which case the rookery might not be so small).

Also, thanks for replying to my comment at the end of last week. You're right that the situation on Gargoyles/Pendragon is a bit different to Young Justice, although the skill of making the show interesting to watch even when the twists are known is probably transferable.

You mentioned GregB's theory about Duval and Peredur. I forget if I've heard it already. The only thing I could think of was that
Percival/Duval siphoned off a part of himself (like an unblemished soul or something) into a new body (Peredur).
Was it anything like that?

We are GARGOYLES!

While gargoyles probably don't take much interest in human holidays (except Halloween, for obvious reasons), the Manhattan clan would have a hard time not being aware of these, since they live in the middle of a major U.S. city. I wonder what they would make of all the colored or chocolate eggs that come out this time of year. I can see them vowing not to let anyone anywhere with egg dye anywhere near Egwardo.

(On a more serious note, I've also sometimes wondered whether, after Brooklyn's return from his Timedancer adventures, the clan built a little rookery at the castle; it would have to be a new rookery since the old rookery was part of the caves beneath the castle, and wasn't moved to the top of the Eyrie Building. (Goliath pointed out the now-empty caves to Elisa and Angela during their visit to Wyvern Hill in "Shadows of the Past".) Only a small rookery, of course, since there's only one egg - and it would hatch the year after Brooklyn's return.
