MASTERDRAMON> Very true.

Even though, it does fall squarely under the rubric of "western" I really wish Irish Mythology got more play in pop-culture. Outside a couple very good animated flicks from Cartoon Saloon, the only thing I can recall that really deep-dives into Irish Myth is the Fate/Whatever franchise.

But I must admit, I'm biased.

I posted the below here when a similar question came up in May of last year, and I'll still stand by it:

As for what I'd personally like to see...well, I'm good with pretty much any mythology that hasn't gotten enough limelight in popular culture. Greek, Egyptian, and Norse mythology are all awesome, of course, but interpretations of their major figures are a dime-a-dozen.

Given Greg's success at reinterpreting the lore of the native Taino people in Rain of the Ghosts, I'd love to see "Gargoyles" touch on all sorts of underexplored tales. Chinese mythology, Central American mythology, Polynesian mythology (my personal fave), African mythology (apart from Anansi)...the list goes on and on and on and on.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, most Western pop culture is very...well, Western-centric. And while it certainly has the potential for it, "Gargoyles" as a property has still only dipped a few toes out of that rich-but-narrow frame of reference.

The room to grow is all but limitless, and while I wouldn't begrudge Greg for telling stories with Jason and Herakles if he comes up with a really good angle, I'd be way more interested in seeing his takes on figures who haven't seen nearly as many modern pens.

I remember doing a report on the samurai back in the 9th grade, I referenced Minamoto and the tengu. Considering how many spirits and shapeshifters there are in Japanese folklore I found it kinda odd that the gargoyles were conflated with the tengu.

As for Dracula, I believe Greg would take the Macbeth route and combine the historical with the fictional. In the meantime, I've been searching through the more obscure myths and found some really interesting creatures. Like the Zburator, a wolf-headed dragon with a tail of fire. It also changes into a human form to seduce women, kinda like a Romanian Incubus.

Oh and if we ever got back to Scotland, I'd love to see their take on the Nucklavee.

I've suspected that gargoyles were the origin of troll legends as well - at least, in light of the part about trolls turning to stone in the daytime. (The mechanics were different in the legends, of course - trolls only turned to stone if exposed to sunlight, and the change was permanent - but it was probably another case of "All things are true; few things are accurate.")

TODD> I've often kinda headcanoned that gargoyles were not particularly welcome in Norse country back in the day, given what a bad rep Trolls have.

I've also sometimes wondered how the Manhattan clan would have gotten along with Thor, if they'd met him (Greg's mentioned that Thor is probably dead in the modern-day part of the Gargoyles Universe - largely because he's been used so often, especially in Marvel). On the one hand, he was a protector-figure, like themselves. On the other hand, after "The Journey", I think Goliath would be uncomfortable around anyone with a hammer for a weapon (and it wouldn't help that Thor's hammer, as the weapon of a thunder-god, would probably have its own "electrical" tone).

...well, that was an amusing hit from the swear filter. Also, eighth.

There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!

Todd> There is indeed absolutely no way the tengu legends surrounding Minamoto no Yoshitsune aren't true (but inaccurate) in the Gargverse. Though I wonder if his tengu sensei was actually a rogue along the lines of Yama that Ushiwakamaru named along with changing his own...

There's an old Japanese legend about a young man whose clan had been defeated but who met some tengu who trained him in battle skills, helping him restore it. I think that would have made an appropriate backdrop to Brooklyn's TimeDancing adventures in Japan, with the "tengu", of course, being the ancestors of the Ishimura clan.

MATTHEW> Woo boy, where do I even start?

Dracula's still my number one "want" from the PD but Greg's pretty much already confirmed him.

So in the interest of stirring up conversation, is there any creature or figure from mythology or folklore that you'd like to see in Gargoyles? As either one of the Children of Oberon or as something possibly unrelated as the dragons might've been.

Never learning the truth that what feels as though a burden pushing down upon our shoulders, is actually, a sense of purpose that lifts us to greater heights. Never forget that fear is but the precursor to valour, that to strive and triumph in the face of fear, is what is means to be a hero.~~~Trollhunters
