Thanks Masterdramon, I had forgotten about how folks can be swamped currently with the pandemic. For myself and several members of the family, we have a little too much free time if you catch my drift.

Matthew: I can only speak for myself, but I do really enjoy your chapter summaries/reactions. Still, as I haven't read the original Rain book in a goodly number of years, there isn't all that much I feel able to add.

I'd love to take this chance to revisit the series and participate in these "book club" discussions, but the time to really set aside for that purpose remains...shall we say, elusive.

Among the many, many consequences of being a healthcare worker 6-months deep into a global pandemic is that the time I usually devote for pleasure reading has been shrunk to virtually nill.

Thanks Todd, never thought my chapter summaries were a little to well done, guess I'll scale it back in the future.

MATTHEW - While part of it might indeed be that people are too busy to come here any longer, as you'd suggested, it's also possible that you've summed up the chapters of "Rain of the Ghosts" that you've reported on too well, and they think there's nothing left for them to say. Or maybe most of the people here don't have a copy of the book.

I read through it much more quickly than you did, reaching Chapter Seventeen before realizing that you were still on the opening chapters, and decided to halt until you'd caught up with me. I also found that already my memories were just blurry enough that I had to reread those chapters once I saw your review - and even then, didn't have anything to add.

But please don't retire your reviews; without them, the comment room would be even quieter. I don't think they're killing the conversation.

Deplorable and loving it!

Excuse the double post, but I've noticed that the chat has slowed down considerably as of late, usually after the chapter thoughts I post. I'm considering maybe retiring these posts if they aren't provoking the discussion that the previous episode rundowns had done.

Or maybe folks are pretty busy with life lately, either way I'm hoping to hear back from someone soon.

Covering chapters 10, 11 and 12 of "Rain of the Ghosts." It's funny to think that the rest of the story will take place over a single day with the rest of the book packed with exposition and action.
These three chapters feature mostly the former as we're given the backstory for Bastian, the Eight and even for some of the other characters. One personal thing that struck me was Iris' comments on how when she was a kid how many of her friends had crushes on her dad. Looking back at old photos I saw one of my own grandfather on my mother's side and was shocked to find out that he had what I like to call "Old School Hollywood Looks." The guy was honestly handsome enough to be in the pictures and it made me think of how often we see grandparents as strictly that, not in their youth or prime.

Another thing that stood out to me is the overall reluctance to talk about characters' service during the war. It's made clear that Bastian never discussed the war with his daughter and it takes some wheedling for Joe Charone to talk about it. Now I imagine a few of us here have had family or friends that served in the military and the folks I know don't really talk about it for one reason or another. Are things different for other folks? That's a question I'd like to pose the chat.

One last thing, I have to mention the rather innocuous reference to Julia aka the central antagonist of the series. I don't think any of us were expecting what was originally thought to be a weather phenomenon, to be the villain of the story.

It's been some time, but it's time for another count the references. We get the more obvious Joe Charone, a reference to the ferryman of the Underworld. But another is one you might only get if you're familiar with Greg's history in comic books. One of the gunners, Harry Eiling is most likely a reference to Wade Eiling, a character Greg created during his time on Captain Atom. Anyone else find any other references?
