Wonder if Dana's aware of that info and that's a basis for using Giraffes as former creatures of the Boiling Isles.

Giraffes were also equated with the mythical Qilin after Chinese merchants bought some in Somalia in the 14th century and are still called "qilin" in Korean and Japanese today.

Okay, not as related as I meant, but
at least bringing up how TOH also has other means of conception.
Tying Gargoyles slightly into discussion The Owl House
has at least suggested that witches can have their own child even if both parties are the same sex. Like Willow's fathers and a couple witches in "Them's The Breaks, Kid who were confirmed to be Boscha's moms.

Like this being a possible thing for Amity and Luz if only for a headcanon where Camila thinks she is fully aware of what's possible on the other side.

But then Luz would later in the future mention how procreation is possible regardless of sexes.

And well through Mrs. Nocera, we find that the heavier Apple Blood requires more consumption to feel even a slight buzz. Like Eda's whole stash.

Like I wonder how Camila would take to the events of Hooty's Moving Hassle.
At first maybe telling Luz that she shouldn'thave had friends over when told not to, only to question if Luz (and friends) really animated an entire houseXD.
Jurgan: There was a lot of speculation on what season 4 would be about even before the official announcement. But I don't think anyone guessed it would be about Meta human trafficking.

Also a little factoid, the ambassador is Suuman Harjavti, the brother of Rumaan the former prime minister of Qurac. He was briefly seen in the tie-in comics that connected season 1 and 2 where it's revealed he's a lackey to Queen Bee and basically allowed Bialya to annex Qurac.

It's been speculated, by the way, that giraffes were the inspiration for the Questing Beast of Arthurian legend; the Beast was described as having the head of a serpent and the body of a leopard, which does sound indeed like a giraffe. (The part about the Beast making a noise like a pack of hounds barking from its stomach doesn't fit giraffes as well, of course.)

Ahh, I see!

KARRIN BLUE -
I was referring to Eda's statement at the start of the series that giraffes used to live in the Boiling Isles, but were exiled to Earth because they were just too weird for the Isles' denizens (and these include centaurs whose faces are in their stomachs and beings whose faces are giant eyeballs). In the trailer for the opening episode, Luz's friends visit the zoo and encounter a giraffe - who takes on an especially nightmarish form.
> Todd:
What callback? Or, I assume you mean a callback to a moment in the first episode of season 1, not the first episode of season 3? I looked for one and didn't see it in the 6 minute preview.
"The girl Kid Flash saved in Season One's "Coldhearted" was Queen Perdita of Vlatava (already an orphaned Queen at her age). Her uncle, the supervillain Count Vertigo who had been part of the Injustice League, wanted her to die so he could take over the throne. The girl who's been kidnapped is Princess Tara of Markovia, a different fictional Eastern European country."

Seems a little repetitive, but then again the scheming uncle trying to seize the throne has been around at least since Hamlet.

3x02: Royal We

Superboy and Jeff/Lightning get their Deus Ex on, carefully sneaking past electronic security systems and through hidden doors. The animation is very detailed and intricate, surely aided by computers. The downside is really obvious CGI like the stone doors swinging open.

Artemis was one of my favorite characters, so it's good to see she's still in the spotlight under the name Tigress. It's also great to hear Steve Blum as a villain. I had to do some googling to confirm the aforementioned Vertigo who tried to steal the throne of his country is now helping do the same thing in Markovia. He has an M.O. and he's sticking with it.

We're going all-in on the human trafficking angle. I have mixed feelings about this- it makes sense as a plot point, but it also is clear social commentary. IRL human trafficking is a problem that is real but vastly overstated for political reasons. I'm not necessarily saying it's a bad idea, but it's a delicate subject that needs to be handled carefully. We'll see how it goes. I did like the other political commentary in ep 1, where the Markovians are accepting refugees from a war-torn Middle Eastern country. More googling (I think I should bookmark the YJ wiki) says Qurac was invaded and annexed by Bialya (run by Queen Bee/Marina Sirtis) and the ambassador of Bialya was speaking at the UN in the opening. Side note: I thought it was pretty funny that, when they announced the League members resigning, everyone gasped at Batman's name but the reaction to the rest was mostly confused murmuring. We all know Batman.

No big developments, but some good action to move the story forward.

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

Slightly relating to Jensen's comment in spoilers.
Anyone here agree with the theory that Darius (Head of the Abomination Coven) had a thing for Alador. Like maybe the two hook up by the time Luz and company return to the Boiling Isles.
PHOENICIAN - I've heard the news about the new episode of "The Owl House" airing this weekend as well. (Unfortunately, it's initially airing at the same time as something on the local PBS station that I've been wanting to watch also; since the new "Owl House" episode is more likely to be repeated over the next few days than that program, I'll have to wait a bit.)
I've seen the trailer for it. It should delight "Lumity" fans; we get a nice scene of Luz and Amity dancing in the rain, but my favorite moment involving them was Luz's mother welcoming Amity - which is all the more touching when you remember what Amity's mom is like. And a very creepy moment involving a casual line back in the first episode....
JURGAN - I enjoyed your review. I don't remember having as much trouble keeping track of the cast in "Young Justice", but I've only seen the first two seasons, and things were probably less complicated back then.

Todd Jensen

Jurgan: Jeff made sporadic appearances beforehand and had a speaking part in the season 2 finale, offering to act as mentor to Virgil/Static. Which is why he talks to him after he quits and apologizes to him, hoping that the kid can find a better teacher.

And sadly, very few can match the Tim Curryness of Tim Curry. But he had to retire for health reasons and it is what it is.

Jurgan: Princess Tara isn't the same as Princess Perdita from season one. Otherwise, if memory serves right, solid stuff.

Picked up my physical copies of issue three of Young Justice: Targets and finally added as many covers for Gargoyles #1 as they would let me to my subscription box. So, very excited for the new canon :D

Also, according to the tracking, pretty sure I'm getting my copy of ToyCollectr magazine that features the NECA Coldstone figure on the cover soon. d:

Oh, and Owl House returns this weekend!

Gus: "I always forget you're there." Hooty: "I forget I'm here toooooo."

"I would absolutely be interested in that."
"I'd be interested too."

I aim to please!

Background: I was always more a fan of Marvel than DC, but these days I decide what to read/watch more based on creators than brands. I watched S1 and S2 for Greg but it’s been at least four years and my memories are somewhat vague. I probably would have given it a solid B, it was enjoyable at the time but nothing compelled me to keep watching. But a few months ago I read Jack Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus, and the stories of Darkseid, Godfrey, and the quest for Anti-Life fascinated me. So I want to see how Greg deals with the subject. Let’s go!

(Please no spoilers- if I ask a question that was answered in the previous seasons, let me know, but don’t tell me anything that will be revealed. All I know to expect is some controversial attempts at diversifying the cast, but I have no idea what the plot has in store.)

3x01: Princes All

First off, I can tell my main difficulty with the show will continue. It is very dense and there are a lot of characters to keep track of. The plot set-up is that something about human biology makes them uniquely capable of being given superpowers, so someone is creating meta-humans and trafficking them all around the galaxy. (Batman refers to it as a “global pandemic” in this show that aired in early 2019. Oof.) I saw parademons for sure at the beginning. Jeff (whoever that is) accidentally kills one and has a crisis. There’s also the fictional nation of Markovia (which I picture as a former Soviet republic) at the center. I believe “Princess Tara” was the girl Kid Flash ran across America to save in S2? Then she got kidnapped, her parents dedicated themselves to break up the kidnapping ring, so they were assassinated. Shocking to remember how much trouble a small pool of blood was on Gargoyles, and now we can show bloody murder via firearms.

I liked the Justice League breaking up because of corruption from Lex Luthor. The best scene was Batman resigning, because of course he’s too self-righteous to work for Luthor, and Jeff telling him that his way of doing things isn’t necessarily any better. Compromise vs. maintain integrity, it’s an interesting moral dilemma. Anyway, we have a few other tidbits like Conner and Megan getting engaged (very cute) and Nightwing kind of starting his own little group independent of the Team? Like I said, a lot is going on and I’m trying to keep the core elements straight even if it means some of the details slip by. Oh, Godfrey is back, and I’m sorry to say that James Arnold Taylor sounds nothing like Tim Curry. Well, it is what it is.

Overall, solid start. It’s convenient that the beginning of the season breaks the status quo from the previous ones, so a lot is being reintroduced. Hopefully that will mean it’s okay that I don’t remember everything from before.

Jurgan - [jurgan6 at yahoo dot com]

Hopefully my text color does not offend the eyes.

Anyway on the Topic of magic props to the YJ team for making many of the casters have unique methods of casting gestures chanting colors symbols all lends it's self well to selling the idea of many magics clashing in one setting something very difficult to do

I do feel like the show could of hammered in better that the rules of magic that are roughly established do not apply to every practitioner.

Harms sword has different rules to it then Doctor Fates helm even though they are both artifacts that bestow power on it's bearer not that i think anyone would compare the two in other other aspect.

Resourceful Raven

Yeah,
That monologue seemed like a lot. I think it would've been fine to just have Metallo as a mystery to be revealed later, too, unless something about that backstory somehow becomes important? I don't know.

Halo actually had that costume back in s4! When they talked with Brion in Markovia, which is also around when they switched to a hijab that covered their throat and a sweater that covered their arms to the wrists. It's a good new look, and seems like a nice way of homaging comics!Halo's classic look too.

And... yeah I'm getting kind of tired of these fake out deaths. I liked that YJ had a 'all deaths revealed by the end of the episode' rule, because it really does start to weaken things if your first thought becomes 'well they must be faking this'. Plus it just seems sort of shock-value-y without adding much to the story, at least right now. Though of course there's still the last issue to see.

Re: Stargirl - I don't think it comes up much nowadays, but I think in her original comics, her powers came from both her staff and her belt - which gave her some vague powers, like the general heroic enhanced-strength-and-durability, and some sort of close-quarters shooting star attack. So she could use that - or maybe she'll just whack Shimmer over the head with the other end of it. It's still metal, after all.

And finally: I wonder how many animal squad names the Outsiders have. Do they come up with new ones for each mission? Something to ponder, perhaps.
Karrin Blue

So here are some of my thoughts on the latest issue, "Metallic Aftertaste."
Lucius: So now, I'm in deep trouble. I mean, one more jolt of this death ray, and I'm an epitaph. Somehow, I manage to find cover, and what does Baron von Ruthless do?
Bob: He starts monologuing?
Lucius: He starts monologuing!

This isn't the first time we had a villain needlessly monologuing, Count Vertigo demonstrated that back in "Coldhearted," but this was a little ridiculous. I mean, it stands to reason the villain would like to flaunt their superiority but with an accompanying autobiography? If Superboy doesn't point out how stupid that was in the next issue, I'll be very disappointed.

I will agree that this plan is pretty complicated, almost convoluted. But baring some new twist in the last issue or a sudden denouement, it all boils down to acquiring kryptonite and removing certain pests, in this case Perdita and the heroes. I have the sneaking suspicion that this all circles back the finale of season 4. They've got a fair amount of murderous Kryptonians in cold storage and another one on the loose, so a contingency plan is needed. Creating someone like Metallo and pitting him against Superboy would be a good way to test a new "Anti-Superman" weapon, especially since Superboy's turn.

It's not seen much, but I do like Halo's new outfit, kind of a burka-like super suit. Which I would say is a good indicator that Halo is coming to terms with their Muslim identity. And bonus points, she gets to be the one dishing out a fake-out death instead of being on the receiving end. Speaking of which, I think M'gann's using her mind powers to fake out the villains while using her telepathy to counteract Queen Bee's powers. But I'm willing to hear other theories.

Oh, and Shimmer destroying Stargirl's staff might be the first time she's done anything useful.
Matthew
Ain't nothing crazy 'bout me but my brain!

Back again with a little review of the latest issue of Young Justice: Targets. Overall, I thought it was pretty good,
but I wasn't in love with the in-depth Metallo flashback (Match seemed like a better fit given we've actually seen him before) and at this point the death fake-outs are getting pretty old. I'm also still really not a fan of the memory lane flashbacks being the same exact story of the Green Arrow animated short, especially when this issue's focus on Black Canary could've led to a more expanded role. Sigh.

That all being said, I did like all the animal squads and the Psimon/Vertigo/Queen Bee combo (minus the fake-out at the end), and I'm genuinely interested in seeing how Stargirl still puts up a fight after Shimmer melted her staff.

(P.S. - Shimmer was always getting beaten in seconds flat in all of her appearances, so it's nice that she seems to be more of a threat this time around.)
I'd be interested too. I gave my own thoughts some time ago but it would be interesting to revisit them with the context of season 4.

To go back to a question Jurgan asked last week that went overlooked ("If I started watching S3 onward and posting my thoughts, would anyone be interested? I assume so, given that other people have posted reviews in here, but I've largely avoided reading them so I don't know what to expect.") I would absolutely be interested in that.

One regular activity I like to do on Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day is reread Dan Rosa's "The Lost Charts of Columbus" (which matches "Indigenous Peoples Day" as well as Columbus Day", though that gets into spoilers). I highly recommend it (and the rest of Rosa's Donald Duck and Scrooge McDuck stories) to everyone here.

I get the feeling most everyday people don't care about various holidays as long as it gets them a day off.

And in regards to spite that might be because people don't like getting into charged discussions about innocuous comments you don't even think about.

I personally prefer trades (it's much easier for me to keep track of them over issues).
But I'm making an exception in this case.

Incidentally I too will be going the physical route.

Also I can't guarantee which cover I get. Just whichever is available when I'm down there.

Trades will likely have a gallery of them all.

Todd - There is a website called Things from Another World that specializes in advance orders of new comics. That’s probably your best bet: https://www.tfaw.com/

First.

I've another question about the upcoming comic. Is it possible to order physical copies of the issue online and have them delivered to my address in the mail? I don't have a comic store within walking distance, and while I know about digital versions of comics, I'm old-fashioned enough to prefer a physical copy.
