I didn't expect to receive a package in the mail earlier today -- turns out it was the Gargoyles t-shirt made by 80stees!

https://www.80stees.com/products/gargoyles-goliath-t-shirt

Last I checked, it looked like it wasn't going to get the minimum orders needed to go through with production, so I was pleasantly surprised. Its not the best looking of the various Garg shirts that have popped up over the years, but still -- it was officially licensed. :)

TODD> Well... Hot damn. Who am I to argue with T.H. White

I am longing to be with you, and by the sea, where we can talk together freely and build our castles in the air.

Even T. H. White alluded to it in "The Once and Future King", where one of Lancelot's knights comments (at the end of Chapter Thirteen of "The Candle in the Wind") that Gawain's name would probably have been pronounced "Cuchullain" [sic] in his homeland.

TODD> Huh, I was not aware of there was a scholoarly connection between Cu Chulainn and Gawain, though it does make sense.

Either way, I'm almost certain in the GU that Cu Roi was an early alias of the Green Knight.

ALGERNON - Yes, I remember Cuchulain having his own beheading game, long before Gawain. (I most recently recalled it when telling a friend about a Norse legend where Odin walks into a king's feasting hall, sticks a great sword into a tree in the middle of the hall, and announces that whoever can pull the sword out of the tree can have it for the rest of his life. All the warriors in the hall try to pull the sword out, but only one - the king's youngest son - is able to do so. The friend brought up the obvious similarity to the Sword in the Stone, and cited the similar instance of Cuchulain's feat parallelling Gawain's.)

I've even seen a theory that Gawain might have been an Arthurianized version of Cuchulain, though I doubt that Greg would have taken that tack (despite his interest in Gawain) - even if it would be tempting to imagine that Rory wasn't the first time the Hero of Ulster was reborn.

Oh, I did the tongue emoji at the end, instead.

Algeron> And thanks for the quick response!

Yeah, I liked the episode, just not the screaming.

Green Lantern's Nightlight

GLN> Molly is the mortal alter-ego of the Banshee, so she's about as "real" as Owen is. Greg has mentioned plans to have her and Rory run into each other again, though not necessarily as enemies.

TODD> True enough on the Fomorians but then again, Molly's not supposed to be off Avalon either. I suspect a fair number of the Children would find excuses for short (or not so short) jaunts into the real world given enough episodes or issues.

Interestingly, there's at least one antagonist from Cu's past who may have already snuck his way into Canon in Training at least...

I think I tried to do a smile emoji in there (after "But you answer!"), but it didn't go through.
Green Lantern's Nightlight

How is Molly a protagonist again? I know I could easily look it up. But you answer! Just from memory, I seem to recall that she wasn't really Molly, but some mythical creature in disguise. :P
Green Lantern's Nightlight

I've never even thought of that question before (maybe because Greg revealed "Heroes of Ulster" much later than he did the other spin-off ideas, so it didn't achieve the same "semi-official" status in my thought as "Dark Ages", "Pendragon", "Bad Guys", etc.). But it's certainly an interesting one.

Adversaries drawn from Irish myth and legend certainly seem likely. I'm not sure where the Fomorians would fit in; if they're part of the Third Race (as most mythical beings in the Gargoyles Universe are), they'd be on Avalon for the Gathering, and so unavailable. But Greg might have found opponents from Irish myth of a different nature. (One that just occurred to me as I wrote this was a legendary water-beast called the "master-otter", if apparently a lot more menacing than an everyday otter. Legend claims that the dying Cuchulain slew an otter - called a "river-dog" or "water-dog" in Ireland - as a parallel to his slaying a great hound as a boy, thus beginning and ending his career with slaying a dog - and it might have been intended as a "master-otter" rather than an ordinary otter.)

Of course, there's also the likelihood of mundane adversaries (though these would have to be handled with care; ordinary crooks are certainly no match for a mythical hero of ancient Ireland armed with a lightning-spear), or, more likely, modern adaptations of Irish mythical adversaries achieved through advanced technology.

I just finished reading Greg Weisman's new World of Warcraft novel, by the way, and enjoyed it. (And, as I'd hoped, even though all I know about "World of Warcraft" is that it's a computer fantasy role-playing game, I had no difficulty understanding what was going on in the story.) It's clearly the first of a series. And there's one "Gargoyles" hommage in its pages, but I'll let you discover it. (There might be two; a minor character has the surname "Frakes".)

So a thought I've been considering for a bit. We know Greg's been planning a _Heroes of Ulster_ spin-off staring Rory and Molly as protagonists. Molly's presence on the "side of angels" (At least nominally) raises an interesting question...

Who would be the antagonists?

Irish Mythology is certainly a target rich environment when it comes to memorable bad guys, Queen Maeve, the Fomorians ect. I'm curious what y'all think?

GLN> I don't know. I've been a Star Trek fan pretty much my whole life. Seen all the tv shows and movies, read a buncha tie-in comics and novels, even played the odd video game...

Don't think I've ever read an actual Trek fanfic.

Personally, I don't know how a writer can avoid seeing fan fiction (at least every now and then). Some people don't even write proper fan fics, they go into forums, etc. and spread their ideas about while commenting on what they've seen/what they want to see next. If any writer is looking up their show, maybe (which some do), they might just see something written down by a fan that would potentially compromise their own writing.

Todd: Especially since it's nothing new.

Delayed yet again? It really makes you wonder what's going on there, if they keep shifting its release back by another few months.

If you've ever taken a road trip through the Pacific northwest, you've probably seen a bumper sticker for a place called Gravity Falls. It's not on any maps, and most people have never heard of it. Some people think it's a myth. But if you're curious, don't wait. Find it. It's out there somewhere in the woods. Waiting.

There is balance in all things. Live in symmetry with the world around you. If you must blow things up and steal from those around you, THAT'S WHAT RPGS ARE FOR!
