This is a second post because you might never see it, but why forty years of timedancing?
Why an entire series? I personally think that the timedancing would go over much better as a mini-series where you have him gone for maybe fifteen twenty years. From what I know about the series (and, granted I don't know much) to me it sounds like there would only be a few changes. Thanks for your time.
Matter of opinion, but I feel like it would work.
When Brooklyn gets back from his timedancing he'll be about biologically forty years old, Goliath is only biologically twenty-nine years old as of 1996. I thought the second was supposed to be young because s/he would take over command of the clan. So…
1) Will post-timedancing Brooklyn still be second-in-command?
2) Will Goliath choose a new second after Timedancers?
3) If so who will it be, Angela, Broadway, Lexington and Nashville?
1. For the time being at least.
2. Not saying.
3. See 2).
While answering a question from Lord Sloth you said "Initially, Katana is not with Brooklyn when he first arrives in 2198".
1) Does this mean that Brooklyn will do some timedancing in between his stay on G2198?
2) Will Katana be with Brooklyn during any of his stay in the year 2198?
1. Not clear on what you mean here.
2. Not saying.
I cant find this in the archive, tho I find it hard to believe it hasnt been asked.
1. Do Oberon's Children reproduce in the biological sense? I mean do they actually pick a mate and have offspring?
2. Demoness asked why Mab disliked Titania, and you said its because Mab thought Titiania was a spoiled brat, and beneath Oberon. So was Titania *raised* as a spoiled brat, meaning she had actualy parents, or did she just have a high opinion of herself (in Mab's eyes).
3. Were the Children of Oberon we have seen (banshee, anansi, etc) mostly offspring of Oberon? Or were most of them there before him?
4. What did Mab call them all? Obviously not 'Oberon's Children'. Or am I wrong?
1. Largely.
2. Not answering this now.
3. Neither.
4. The Children of Mab.
Hello Greg,
This is The Cat, again. Ok, question. Why did Sevarius(hope I spelled that right) clone the other gargoyles?
How did he clone the male gargoyles? I only thought females could be cloned because we have the proper cells, such as the egg.
Well all for now. Bye.
Why? Because (a) he was well paid and (b) he likes that kinda thing.
As to the male-female thing, I'd never heard that.
"Vows" has 2 endings, right? Why? What appended in the 2nd ending where Goliath and Demona are still together? How can they live in Manhattan if Demona didn't help the Vikings to attack the castle ?
Thanks!
"Vows" really only has one ending. But the first time it aired, it aired with an uncorrected scene. It showed Goliath and Demona kissing. It's supposed to be a final flashback to them at the castle in the tenth century. But the first time it aired the wrong background was used, and so they seemed to be kissing in the present at the clocktower. This is just a mistake, and it was corrected for subsequent airings. (We ran out of time or it would have been corrected before the first airing.)
Some of the fans prefer the mistake. Don't ask me why.
Hi Greg,
Last one from me, for awhile anyway.
Ok, these are about disabilities. I'm disabled and I was wondering about this because it seemed to me that the only gargoyles that had anything wrong with them (such as blindness or missing a limb) aquired it in battle.
1. Are any gargoyls born with problems that cause a disability?(Like, I have heart problems and they caused me to have a stroke when I was 4 years old which caused the right side of my body not to work properly.)
2. Are any gargoyles born blind, mute, deaf or missing any limbs?
3. If yes, what does the rest of the clan do with them?
4. If no, why not?
Ok, I'm being chased off the computer. I better run. Bye.
1. I don't know. I won't rule it out, but I have their healing factor to figure in. It's also possible that some eggs just don't hatch. But I'd have to think and do more research.
2. Same answer. I'm not sure at this point.
3. The clan takes care of its own in any case.
4. The answer, if the answer is no, would have something to do with the healing factor which begins to work even in the egg. But again, I haven't considered this yet, honestly.
Hi Greg,
The Cat, again.
Ok, these questions are about language.
1. Do gargoyles have their own language?
2. If no, then how come the Guatamala and Japanese Clans could understand Goliath, Angela and Elisa when they were on the "World Tour"?
3. If yes, what would it be called? Don't you dare say English, that is a Human language!
4. How come the Guatamala Clan and the Japanese Clan could speak perfect English? It takes a bit of time to translate Spanish into English and vica versa. Same with Japanese.
5. Languages under go many changes. In just a generation the words that one used to mean "Nice!" Have gone from "Groovy!" to "Cool!" So, how could Elisa understand Goliath since the English language had gone through many changes in 1,000 years and most likely Goliath and his clan spoke Celtic, Gaelic or Anglo-Saxxon, not English?
Ok, Bye.
1. No.
2. On some level we were cheating. But basically, we were assuming that English is fairly global at this point.
3. See above.
4. I wanted to make more use of foreign languages in these and at least a couple other episodes. Do a bit of stuff with subtitles. But my bosses rejected the idea.
5. This was another cheat, largely. I'm told, Michael Reaves has a theory to explain this using a magic spell. But I've not heard it first hand.
Hi Greg,
Ya said post every question separately for each topic, so that is what I'm doing.
Ok, these questions are on another topic of much controversy. Race. I'm curious about this topic because during my freshman and sophmore years in highschool my classmates were in a racial, I'll say, argument. While, I think, no one was hurt it left me wondering about what gargoyles might do in the same predicament.
So, here are the questions:
1. Are gargoyles prejudice of another gargoyle just because the other has something different than the others, like wings, a beak, ears, etc?
2. Do gargoyles ever think that they are better or worse off because of how they look?
3. If either of these two are incorrect, then why?
Well that's it, Bye.
1. Because there is so much racial prejudice between gargoyles and humans, the cosmetic differences between various gargoyles seem relatively insignificant. Everything is relative, of course and depends on scale.
2. Sure.
3. See above.
Hey Greg,
Figured I'd nag ya just a little.
Ok, these questions are about religion. I'm curious about this one because I remember (this is still probably going on) when the northern half of Ireland was in turmoil with the southern half just because of religion.
So, here are the questions:
1. Are gargoyles concerned about religion as much as humans are?
2. Do they have their own?
3. Do they ever get into fights with other clans just because their version of the truth doesn't quite corruspond to the others version of the truth or because one clan may believe in one god or goddess while the other clan may believe in more than one god or goddess?
Or:
4. Are gargoyles so much "higher" than humans that they're not that petty and really don't care about whether or not the religion of one clan corrusponds to their's as long as it has something in it about protecting humans and being "good"?
Hope ya got all that. Hope I spelled right. Oh well, you should get the idea of what I mean if I didn't spell any big words right, like corruspond, I don't think I spelled that one right.
1. Referring to any group of individuals as monolithic in their beliefs is a mistake. But generally speaking the Gargoyles' Faith, so to speak, is both animistic and monotheistic and essentially more laissez faire than most human religions. Codes of conduct and respect and tradition mean quite a bit. But God generally takes care of himself/herself.
2. Sure, to some extent. Check the archives under Gargoyle customs for more information.
3. Interclan warfare would be EXTREMELY rare in that the clans are so spread out even in medieval times.
4. Individual gargoyles may be more 'evolved' than individual humans, but one of the points of the series was that no one species is superior to any other species.
1.) You've answered, "He's indifferent in the incarnations you've seen" when Lord Sloth asked whether Coyote the robot had any feelings for Hyena. Because of your choice of the word "incarnations", let me rephrase the question to ask:
When they become part of the Ultra Pack, how will Coyote the robot feel towards Hyena?
2.) What gender will the fifth Ultra Pack member be?
1. Don't know yet.
2. Not telling.
Will Demona meet either of her next two loves prior to the Space Spawn invasion?
Not revealing that now.
Greg said:
In fact, Goliath's initial reaction to Thailog is not to form a bond. It's to call him an abomination. (You blithely skipped over that, Shan.) Part of what follows is a bit of guilt mixed in with him taking responsibility for Thailog as a parent.
As to Angela, you've again missed his initial reaction to her on Avalon. It is clearly one of paternal pride, just as he is proud of Gabriel and all of his children.
Shan responds:
You're right on both counts. I do remember having fallen asleep and just woken up in time to see the "Double Jeapordy" episode. Probably thought I remembered more than I really did, both about what I had just seen and Angela's situation. Lousy excuse though. I really should have researched better before asking a question of such an involved level (re: attempting to compare Thailog and Angela).
No biggie. Glad you're interested.
In the episode, "Future Tense," didn't it ever--disturb you looking back how Demona and Brooklyn were a couple? I mean, I see Goliath as a father to Brooklyn(even though G's only 10 garg years older). It wouldn't be right for a son to date his father's former wife/girlfriend. It would be downright disgusting. Yick! If my mother was single, I could never, EVER go out with a guy that has dated my her--even if he was around my age. Would you? And to make the B/D relationship concept/idea worse, Demona had been with THAILOG before she'd been with Brooklyn. Talk about hand-me-downs. Wow, that would be quite a marketing idea. I could just see it now: "Come on down and get the all-new 'Hand-Me-Down Demona' action figure! As a bonus you get to choose between Goliath, Thailog, or Brooklyn as her perspective "partner!" Heh heh! Demona would have a different outfit for which ever pairing you choose. Heh! Anyway, I'm just glad the whole thing was a dream-sequence scheme created by Puck and not something that would actually happen in "your" Gargoyle Universe.
Well, first off it was intentionally done for shock value to freak Goliath (and our audience) out.
But to be fair, I don't see Goliath as a father figure to Brooklyn. I see him as an older brother.
Hi, Greg, I just wanna say I love the show and I was wondering something---Titania had Fox by the human, Renard, but did Oberon have any flings with human women? Did he have any children by them? Thanks!
Merlin.
Hello Greg,
Ok, I was wondering if you could give me some advice about how to get The Gathering to come to my home town. I can't go to any of The Gatherings because I'm in college and well. School comes first. Anyway, ya think ya could? Well, bye.
Where do you live?
(I applaud you for putting school first. But the Gathering is usually over a weekend in the summer, so I'm not clear why college alone is an impediment.)
"How many gargoyles does it take to screw in a lightbulb?"
I dunno, how many you got?
And FINALLY, the contest begins. This goes on file til all the entries are in.
Fox
Did you plan for Fox to use her magic in future episodes?
Potentially. (Today's new favorite word.)
New Wyvern clan
Why are the new Wyvern clan anti-technology? How did they get to QFL?
Anti-technology may be a bit strong, but they emphasize a more traditional lifestyle without technology. Concessions are made when it's important, I suppose. That includes boarding transportation to an event important to the entire Gargoyle Nation.
London Clan
How rich is the London clan in 2198? What stuff do they sell in their stores in 2198?
They're doing all right.
Magic stuff. Tourist stuff. Gargoyle merchandise. Etc.
I noticed something during a viewing of Vendettas. In the background, there's a building with a sign on it reading 'ELEXEM'.
Hmmm... Elexem. El-ex-em. L-X-M. LXM.
Now, what could that stand for? Lexington-Xanatos Matrix, perhaps? A hint, could it be, for the future? ;)
ELEXEM STEEL CORPORATION. I'm aware of it. ;)
Puck
Since Puck didn¡¯t know of Demona¡¯s link with MacBeth how did he think she stayed alive for ten centuries?
Does Xanatos trust Puck/Owen entirely?
It's possible to simply acknowledge ignorance. Speculating on what his incorrect theory might have been seems pointless.
As much as anyone.
Shaman&Dreamtime
The dreamtime in Australian legend was where life began and the abode of the gods so is this true in the gargoyles universe?
I just thought Goliath and Dingo¡¯s battle with Matrix is quite similar to shaman battles so was it suppose to be a Shaman battle?
Shamanistic certainly. We did our best given our resources.
Karadigi
How did Fara Maku find Karadigi when nobody else found it?
Maybe for once, Anansi wanted it to be found...
1) What year was Maria Chavez born in?
2) What is the name of Maria Chavez's daughter?
3) What year was she born in?
4) Who was her father?
1. Sorry. I don't have my timeline with me.
2. Ditto.
3. Ditto.
4. This has not been established.
What is Fiona Canmores' twin brother/Charles Canmores father/Jason, Robyn, Jon's grandfather's name?
Ugh. I'm fairly certain that Fiona's twin brother is named Jackson. But I've charted so many Canmores that I get confused sometimes, and I don't have that chart with me. I can't remember for sure. Ask me again later.
(But I'm pretty sure that Jackson is Fiona's twin brother. That Jackson was the father of Aron who was the father of Charles who was the father of Jason, Robyn & Jon. And I know Fiona's great-grandfather was Angus.)
Monmouths
What do the Monmouths think of gargoyles in 2198? Are they pro-gargoyle?
Generally.
Space-Spawn
Are there any political entities in 2198 in the Milky Way galaxy more powerful than the Space-Spawn Empire?
How did the Space-Spawn develop into the threat that they¡¯re?
Can the N¡¯kai take them down?
It depends how you define "political entities" and "power".
Victory after victory.
They haven't.
OK, Greg--
Don't laugh, but I have an idea about how to get Gargoyles back on the air. Here's the lowdown:
I've been looking through the archives, specifically the "Bringing Gargoyles Back" one, and I've come across a lot of questions like, "What can I do to bring Gargoyles back?" The answer, howerver, is always the same: "Write letters to Disney, or Buena Vista and ask for the show back, or petition a DVD release of the series." We all know letters are more efficient than emails at these sorts of things, but idividual letters won't do anything compared to an organized, letter-writing campaign. I'm guessing that most of the time you tell people to write in, they don't, because they don't have a clue as to where to start. No address or anything. I suggest that we organize a campaign right here on ASK GREG. I suggest that a new addition to the main page be added, with information about addresses and people to whom we should write. If this info were advertized on the Station 8 Gargoyles page, I'm sure all these people who read ASK GREG would write in; I know I would. Maybe we could persuade some of the other Gargoyles fan pages to advertize it too. I think if we concentrate on a few key Disney and Buena Vista addresses, and absolutely flood them with mail, the message might get through. I'd be willing to help coordinate the campaign, but to be honest, I don't know where to begin. I know you're not in charge of designing the page or anything, but I'm guessing whoever is is probably reading this. Tell me what you think of this idea; I think it can work.
Lots of thoughts -- in no particular order...
1. Thank you for caring about this. It means a lot to me.
2. Don't count on the notion that Gore reads all these questions. He may not have seen this suggestion. If you're serious and want his help, contact him directly.
3. An organized letter writing campaign would be terrific. I would start with a small focus, a small goal. Get the series released on DVD. I'd recommend contacting Walt Disney Television Animation, Walt Disney (or is it Buena Vista) Home Video and Michael Eisner.
4. ASK GREG is definitely not the site to organize this. Sorry. But if the campaign seems to have been generated by me or by something so obviously connected to me, then it won't look like it's coming from the fans. It'll look like I'm being self-serving. (Which I suppose I am in a way, but it's best if we keep that between us.)
5. Airportman, if you're interested in coordinating this effort, then I say go for it and thanks. You say you don't know where to begin, but you seem to have outlined many of the steps above. You need to figure out (a) what to say, (b) where to send the message and (c) how to publicize the campaign so that you get as many people involved as possible. Good luck.
You said that the Grimorum was brought from 995 to the 1970s by Brooklyn, Mary and Finella, and we already know the Phoenix Gate spent a thousand yeas, half with Goliath and half with Demona, but were you ever going to show the history of the Eye of Odin?
Care to give a brief synopsis of the history of the Eye?
No. Check Norse mythology for its early history. But it's more fun and practical to chart these things in stories than just to write them out here.
Sevarius
What did Sevarius plan to do with the Loch Ness monster?
Harvest, breed, create, etc.
Were you ever planning to show on screen the original Magus casting the spell of humility on the gargoyles at the request of Caesar Augustus?
Maybe in TimeDancers?
Exactly. Maybe. That is, I would have liked to. Depends on the S&P situation, probably.
Trio
Is any of the trio alive in 2198? How about the trio¡¯s children?
You mean not counting Brooklyn who TimeDanced there? No.
Not saying.
1.Is the Coldtrio(Coldstone, Coldfire and Coldsteel) around in 2198?
2.If so, are they apart of the Manhattan Clan or the New Wyvern Clan?
3.Did you ever plan for them to return to their flesh-n-bone forms? By magic or otherwise?
1. Not saying.
2. Not saying.
3. No.
World Wars
Did Macbeth fight in any of the world wars? If so which side?
Yes, Macbeth has fought in many wars.
And certainly in WWII he was with the allies.
MacBeth
How many identities does MacBeth have in 1996? Is he really a professor?
By 2198 does everyone know that he the Scottish king that Shakespeare wrote about?
At least two that he keeps active.
He's a medievalist. Doesn't mean he teaches.
No.
Gargoyle Beasts
Were there any Gargoyle beasts at Wyvern besides Bronx? If so why didn¡¯t you show them?
Yes.
There were limits as to how many soon-to-be-dead-gargoyles we had the time and money to design.
Lost clans
What ever happened to the Irish clan?
What ever happened to the Egyptian clan?
Without getting into specifics for any particular clan, nearly EVERY now-defunct clan was defuncted by humans ala Wyvern.
Proteus
What is Proteus¡¯s lifespan? Is he around in 2198? If so what has he been doing? By 2198 how many sentient beings has he killed?
Not saying.
Foreshadowing in Future Tense
Does the Alexander of 2198 own any exo-suits like the one seen in the Future Tense episode?
Does Brooklyn and Demona look like the Demona and Brooklyn in Future Tense?
Generally, I try to avoid making 'decisions' here that will inhibit the artistic freedom of future collaborators, but...
Alex. Potentially, yes. But since, Alex is kidnapped and put in stasis in the first episode it's going to be a non-issue for some time.
Brooklyn. Initially, Brooklyn would look very much like Brooklyn from Hunter's Moon. Later he may wind up with a look similar to Future Tense -- though with one major change.
Demona. Potentially.
Why didn't Thailog and Demona clone Angela?
Demona didn't want a clone of Angela, she wanted Angela. So she never released a mosquito when Angela was guarding her cell. That meant that Thailog and Sevarius didn't have the option.
Merlin
Is Merlin still in love with Nimue in 1996?
Not saying.
At the end of "The Edge" how does Vinnie feel about the press releases saying the gargoyles were only robots?
Assuming he saw it, I'm sure he doesn't buy it.
Can gargoyles make their eyes glow or is it an involuntary action?
I believe it's involuntary.
I live in Virginia Beach VA and want to attend the 2002 "Gathering"...but...*feels stupid*...is there a website or other place I can find out specific information on the event?
*Get the feeling I'm asking a question with an incredibly obvious answer...but I'm fairly new to Gargoyles fandom.*
The Gathering 2002 has been moved from Virginia Beach to nearby Williamsburg. The web page is (as far as I know) currently under construction. So your best bet for the most current info is to post any questions you might have to the Station 8 Comment Room. Con chair Siryn stops by regularly to answer questions, and I'm sure when the web page is ready she'll post it's addy there.
ok, another kinda silly question:
is Leo's mane kinda just a beard that most other male gargoyles can grow? could Leo shave it off if he wanted too?
could Goliath or another male garg grow a "mane"? or is that mane not like a beard and strictly genetically connected with the English gargs?
Well, of course, Leo could shave it off. He could theoretically use Nair too.
I doubt Goliath could grow a mane, however.
2198 Tech
So will humans develop faster than light travel or will they receive it?
How far away are humans in 2198 from developing easy faster than light travel?
How exactly does faster than light travel work in the gargoyles universe?
1. NS
2. Not close.
3. NS
2198 conditions
Is their poverty in 2198?
Is Cyberbiotics still around in 2198?
Is the Dracon crime family still around in 2198? What about Broud¡¯s gang?
1. Yes. Some.
2. Not saying.
3. Not saying.
4. Brod? Not saying.
Subject Atlantis: Serious Real-Life
My question is, do you believe the lost city (or island) of Atlantis once existed, as written in the writings of Plato?
I tend to believe in everything, but if you're confronting me, my answer is "I don't know."
You said a while ago that you found Back To The Future 2 "masturbatory". I was just curious why that was. (Not asking in any hostile way. Just genuinely curious.)
I enjoyed the first film. I even loved the ending and was looking forward to the sequel.
But the sequel was disappointing. It's been awhile, so my full grasp of my specific gripes are vague, but...
The way that Elizabeth Shue (MJF's recast girlfriend) is shunted aside suggested that they weren't interested in really expanding on the previous movies' situation but were really just interested in doing a CRAZIER version of the first film.
MJF plays his character's own kids. Why? He didn't play his own parents in the first movie. What's the point of casting him as his own son AND DAUGHTER, except to mess with our suspension of disbelief for the sake of showing us just how undeniably talented MJF is.
All the intercutting with the first film was interesting at first, but ultimately served to undercut the first film in my memory.
All this struck me as masturbatory. The film-makers (particularly Zemekis and Fox) having their own good time at the expense of what could have been a really fun movie.
Just my opinion, of course.
