"Gargoyles, Clan Building Chapter Nine: The Rock of Ages"
Okay, been sitting on this for over a year, especially after that Radio Play. My thoughts on this one are still kind of jumbled. But I enjoyed it. A lot.
Xanatos attempts another gambit, but, as we soon discovered, it is pointless to try to possess the Stone of Destiny. Although it was very cool to see him try to pull a fast one on the Illuminati. That man has guts.
Great to see Coldstone and Coldfire again. They've both been missed, and the way Coldstone destroyed Coyote was just brutal. Loved it.
And, here we go, the Illuminati. The biggest surprise had to be the identity of their leader. For years Greg kept telling us that Duval was their leader, and that he is Sir Percival. That is no longer accurate. Peredur fag Ragnal is the leader of the Illuminati, the keeper of the Holy Grail, and Peredur is the Welsh version of Percival. Not to mention the Spirit of Destiny referred to Arthur as Peredur's old master. So, if Duval is no longer Percival, then who is he? I have a very strong notion on that, but I'll keep that to myself for now.
As for Duval. I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but it most certainly was not... that. Granted, this particular arc was full of things I was not expecting. But, Duval as a cyborg? Not at all. I mean, I'd read that he was paying a physical price for his use of the Grail and his... sins. But, this is really not at all what I was expecting. So, at least one of his hands is cybernetic, and his left eye is cybernetic. I already want to see this guy's origin story.
The Stone of Destiny itself... wow... that blows the whole thing wide open. Just one of several thousand vessels for the Spirit of Destiny. And what is the Spirit of Destiny? I think it's something far bigger than any gargoyle, human, or Child of Oberon could comprehend.
So, what was so special about Fox's shoes? Um... they're really nice shoes? But, gotta give Xanatos credit, a shoe box is useful for a bomb scare.
And, as in the Radio Play, my favorite part had to be when the Holy Grail and the Stone of Destiny (real, fake, makes no difference) said hello to each other.
Good story. The art, well, I am so glad that Robby was the colorist, he does good work. Unfortunately, I am still no fan of Hedgecock's pencils. Aw well, the next three issues were visually stunning.
The one question I do have, which sadly isn't answered in this volume is... just how are the Manhattan Clan going to be able to keep living in Xanatos's castle? While Hudson and Lexington weren't his targets, they were still placed in harm's way when Xanatos unleashed Coyote 5.0, Coldsteel, and the rest on them. This is not the sort of thing Goliath would or should take likely.
I think it's par for the course, but we'll all just have to see.
My post had a typo. It supposed to say and not an. I'm sure you'd figure it out but just thought I'd let you know anyway.
THanks. My post has a typo too.
If Spencer an Alistair Smythe appear what race will they be?
If we get future seasons of The Spectacular Spider-Man, do you plan for the Spider-Slayers to appear at some point, or are they too redundant of Scorpion?
For the Mayan Clan, those who wear the magical prevention-turn-to-stone pendants, how does sleep work for them, or is it no longer needed? Also, to follow this how do they contain their gargoyle strength with out stone sleep?
See the archives.
Hello once again sir, I have some small questions yet agin for the Spectacular Spider-Man series.
Roderick Kingsley is a CEO of a perfume company rather than a fasion designer, what inspired this change in occupation? If is something that will come up with his Hobgoblin stint, feel free to reply with "No Comment".
Same with Morris Bench, he's a demolitions expert rather than a crewman. Same rules apply, if it something that will come into play as Hydro-Man, just say "no comment".
If you reread Kingsley's VERY first appearance in the comics, the answer should be fairly obvious.
As for Bench, yes, it's something that will come into play.
Dear Greg,
My name is ALex Galucki, I am a thirteen year old from Georgia (USA). I already watched all of the epiosdes of the Spectacular Spider-Man Season 2 from both Disney XD and Youtube. And let me just say that it blew my mind away! It was that awesome! This is by far my favorite Spidey series! I thank you for making a great series.
Anyway, I know there is a chance you might be doing a season 3. And I have some good storyplots for a possible season 3. Which leads to my only question; could I possibly send you scripts for the episodes of season 3? If you say yes, please e-mail me at luckygalucki@bellsouth.net. If you say no, that's alright. I mean they're just ideas.
Thanks,
Alex "Lucky" Galucki
Sorry, Alex, but no. I don't look at unsolicited submissions or ideas to protect myself from lawsuits.
Hey, Greg.
I know that dispite your best efforts Gargoyles failed and it left you broken. But I have faith. Do you believe that the show will ever air again?
Okay, dude. Gargoyles did NOT fail. And I was not, nor have I ever been, "broken". And the show AIRS NOW five nights a week.
So given the collections of misstatements, what exactly are you asking... that can't be answered by a far less annoying trip to the ASK GREG ARCHIVES?
Hello Greg,
I have a dumb question about Demona's hair: is it two-toned? I don't ever recall seeing a shot of her in the series without that black patch near her crown. I always assumed her hair was red, and that the dark patch was added in to give it some dimension (or "oomph" if you will). But I own a small PVC figure of her with the black actually painted into the front of her hair. Was that an error on the painter's part?
Her hair is not two-toned. It's red.
Hey Greg, a question about the London Clan...
If the gargoyles raise their young communally, who names them? You've stated that Lunette's name is a sort of amalgamation of the names of her parents. But under the system of communal nurturing, gargoyles are not aware of their biological parents, correct? So who named Lunette (or any of the other gargoyles, for that matter)? It would be a pretty strange coincidence for her to have been given a name that so closely resembles those of her mother and father if no one is aware of her parentage.
I 'stated' that? I mean it's obvious, but I don't recall stating it.
Lunette was NOT named by the clan as an amalgamation of Leo and Una. (She WAS named by me that way.) But Lunette as a name has a long Arthurian history.
If that's too big of a coincidence for you, so be it.
